As a child, Caleb was helplessly drawn to the woods behind his family’s house—a deep forest that became a friend, a sharer of secrets, even a protector. On the night Caleb was stranded by a blizzard, a mysterious figure saved his life and kept him from harm.

But all too soon his family moved away, and Caleb set the mysterious stranger aside as a figment of his imagination. Now, more than fifteen years later, Caleb returns to the woods he left behind and encounters a familiar face…

Anything can be hidden in the woods.

Caleb was fascinating. I liked seeing how he matured from boyhood to adulthood, especially since so much of his tale was focused on what he was like as a child. His personality had plenty of opportunities to reveal itself, and I enjoyed figuring out exactly what kind of person he was.

The narrator told the reader what was happening instead of showing it to us. The premise itself was interesting, but I had trouble keeping my attention focused on the storyline because of how disconnected I felt from what was going on. It felt like I was hearing a thirdhand account of what Caleb experienced instead of observing it alongside him.

One of the things that first piqued my interest in this story was the mysterious stranger mentioned in the blurb. I was curious to see who this individual would be and how they would interact with a little boy who’d gotten himself lost in the woods. Unravelling what was going on with this was a highlight of the plot for me because of how methodically everything was revealed.

There were some pacing problems. So much time was spent on setting everything up in the beginning that the middle and ending felt rushed to me. This almost felt like the first chapter of a full-length book instead of a complete short story. It would have worked well as the introduction to a longer work, but it felt uneven at its current size and pacing due to how little time there was to explain what was happening.

The forest itself was memorable. Ms. Kleinn’s descriptions of what it feels like to walk through the forest in the middle of winter made me shiver in sympathy. It definitely can be a cold, damp, and soggy experience. She captured both the beauty and the misery of that kind of stroll well.

I’d recommend Restless Shadows, Waiting Road to anyone who likes romance novels that include a few fantasy themes.

Schoolteacher Connie Meyers is suddenly a young widow, her husband killed in a horrific car accident. Heartbroken to find out he had gambled away everything they had, she moves to her sister-in-law’s Midwest home to rebuild her life. A trip to the local Renaissance Faire with her nieces leads to a summer job as a costumed storyteller.

Avowed bad boy and fair performer Gage Younglood is infatuated with Connie at first sight. Despite his deliberately commitment-free life, and Connie’s don’t-touch-me attitude, he soon has her in his arms, realizing quickly she is also in his heart.

Not your average contemporary romance!

I’m a Ren Faire fan, so was excited to review this book.  It was such fun to see behind the scenes a bit, with a strong cast of secondary characters. They really made the book.

Connie, honestly, is a bit too good to be true.  Her husband cheated on her, sired a baby with the other woman, drove her into the depths of debt (with a bookie, no less) and she’s still just a sweetheart.  Gabe, on the other hand, wasn’t a guy I like at first.  He’s a player, and makes no bones about it.  And the last thing Connie needs is another player…

Susabelle Kelmer does a great job tossing the reader head first into the story and her characters are so well created.  I’m a big fan of character driven stories, and this certainly fits the bill.  It was delightful to watch Gabe change into a man I could admire (and Connie could trust and love).  I also enjoyed seeing Connie take back control of her life and get a bit of a backbone.  And the touch of suspense was both a surprise and a neat twist to help make this a little more than just a romance.

For a well-written book with plenty of emotions, fun and some action, you should give The Fairest of the Faire a try. I’m glad I did.

He was once happily bedding and boxing, but in the newest Duke’s Behaving Badly novel, Nicholas Smithfield has inherited a title and a bride . . .

To keep his estate afloat, the new Duke of Gage must honor an agreement to marry Lady Isabella Sawford. Stunningly beautiful, utterly tempting, she’s also a bag of wedding night nerves, so Nicholas decides to wait to do his duty—even if it means heading to the boxing saloon every day to punch away his frustration.

Groomed her whole life to become the perfect duchess, Isabella longs for independence, a dream that is gone forever. As her husband, Nicholas can do whatever he likes—but, to Isabella’s surprise, the notorious rake instead begins a gentle seduction that is melting every inch of her reserve, night by night . . .

To his utter shock, Nicholas discovers that no previous exploits were half as pleasurable as wooing his own wife. But has the realm’s most disreputable duke found the one woman who can bring him to his knees— and leave him there?

Nicholas Smithfield is very happy with his life as it is. His passions are boxing and sex (not necessarily in that order), and he enjoys an abundance of both. When he learns that he has just inherited the title of Duke of Gage, his reaction is not typical. Instead of being overjoyed, he is unhappy, especially when he learns that he has inherited a fiancee, as well. Nicholas sets out to visit his betrothed and her parents to see if there is any way out of the agreement. When he sets eyes on Isabella, he is awed by her beauty. He also learns that her parents have no intention of letting him slip away, and if he backs out of their deal, there will be severe consequences for everyone depending on the dukedom for their living. My first thoughts of Nicholas were not very flattering, as he was living a dissolute life with no ambition or real purpose. My opinion began to change when he showed concern for the people whose well being he now held in his ducal hands.

Isabella Sawford is a stunningly beautiful woman, and her parents have used her looks to further their own agenda. They have forced Isabella to become the perfect woman in her dress, manners, and conduct. Initially, Isabella appears to be little more than a pleasant, vapid puppet, willing to perform any task her parents set out for her, including becoming engaged to the former Duke, a man she loathed. I came to see that Isabella’s younger sister was being used as leverage, and any disobedience from Isabella will be unfortunate for Margaret, the one person she loves dearly. I had to admire Isabella’s lack of selfishness, which I originally believed was weakness.

So, two strangers agree to marry in only two weeks’ time. Isabella’s parents are truly loathsome, they have no regard for either of their daughters feelings or desires. Isabella has been so browbeaten, that Nicholas’ attempts to get to know her are met with the social perfection that she has cultivated, making her appear to be nothing more than a beautiful doll with little substance. Nicholas, however, has hidden depths that surprised me, based on the lifestyle he has been living. He chooses to give Isabella time to get to know him after their marriage, since she seems terrified of what happens in bed (thanks to a lovely lecture from her shrew of a mother). Nicholas uses his charm to slowly woo her, and bring the real person under all that perfection to the surface.

This book was a quick read, and a feel-good pure delight. I had to laugh at Nicholas keeping track of how long it had been since he had sex. He is the epitome of the reformed rake, and I adored him. It was wonderful to watch Isabella come into her own as a person, and to blossom from Nicholas’ care of her. I also enjoyed seeing her stand up to her parents. I love to read a story that is mostly about the developing romance, and this fits the bill. Megan Frampton has become one of my auto read authors. I know that I can count on her books for lots of smiles and a heartfelt romance. Put Up Your Duke definitely has those qualities, and is my favorite of hers – so far.

Everything can change in a single moment in time. The question is, will it change for the better or for the worse?

One of the things I love the most about Mr. Power’s writing style is how much tension he packs into every single scene. Reading one of his stories is like drinking a shot of espresso for me. I feel the effects of it almost immediately, and I can’t concentrate on anything else until I’ve digested every last drop of it. This works really well for the mystery genre in particular because it made it almost impossible for me to figure out where the next plot twist would take the character next.

Speaking of plot twists, this tale was full of them. I’d estimate that I was caught off-guard by ninety percent of them. This is something that almost never happens when I read this genre, so it was a lot of fun to be surprised by where the author was going so regularly.

The author’s intelligent use of flashbacks was yet another reason why I gave GodBomb! such a high rating. Not only did they give me a strong impression of who these characters were as individuals, they provided short breaks from what was currently happening to them. It was really nice to slow down the pace a little bit for these scenes, especially as I grew closer and closer to the end.

Definitely check out the list of characters and their brief biographies before diving into the first chapter. I was very glad to see Mr. Power include this information as it made it incredibly easy to remember everyone’s backstory.

GodBomb! is one of the best books I’ve read so far in 2015. I can’t recommend it highly enough!

New York Times bestselling author Sandra Hill delivers a sizzling new entry in her Deadly Angels series, as a Viking vangel’s otherworldly mission teams him with a Navy SEAL who’s more than his match— she’s his predestined mate . . .

The fact that vampire angel Harek Sigurdsson was a Norseman in his mortal life doesn’t make thawing out after exile in Siberia any easier. But things heat up when his search for evil Lucipires connects him with Camille Dumaine, a human who thrums with sensual energy that can mean only one thing: she’s the mate Harek’s been seeking for centuries . . .

The SEALs call her “Camo” for her ability to blend into a crowd—yet Harek’s intense blue gaze singles Camille out like a white-hot spotlight. The security wiz was hired to help bring down a ruthless band of international kidnappers, but Camille senses an unspoken agenda—besides Harek’s bold declaration that she’s his “destiny.” Just Camille’s luck that the sexiest man she’s ever met may also be . . . a vampire!

Wow, Ms. Hill pulled inspiration from current headlines and fit them into this story with perfect logic. The weird thing of it is, a few books ago, I sort of wondered if Lucipires were behind the horrible events unfolding and I guess I was right. I mean, if anything could fit the M.O. of Jasper and his evil minions it’s what is going on now. Imagine my surprise when I saw it in action!

Something tells me that the author spent quality time doing serious research in preparation for writing this novel. The one thing that I give her credit for is her ability to wield this knowledge with the gravity and seriousness it deserves without letting the subject overtake, overwhelm or subjugate the story with the darkness of the conflict. The romance is front and center with the focus strongly aimed at Harek and Camille. They made for an interesting couple.

Ms. Hill continues her tradition of clever Viking quips, funny puns and sexual innuendo. This author loves to play with the written word and some of the dialogue, both inner and verbal, was hilarious and truly inspired. All her characters practice a certain form of wit that can be endearing, annoying, (to the other protagonist, with giggle-worthy results) and sometimes insightful. It’s the repartee between the main characters and secondary characters that oftentimes provides the most interesting clues about the hero and heroine’s personalities.

There were some important secondary characters and some that were on stage only to illustrate a point or move the story along. Each and every person in the story had a reason for being there, even if it’s only to have a door slammed in their face. I liked that part.

I can only think of three areas where I think the story fell a bit flat and that was the island and the decision about the undiscovered item, and then the scene when the binding slipped. I’m wondering if the editor really thought that whole interaction through, because I found it inappropriate. Granted, Herek had some clever lines during the process but all I kept thinking about was who was involved. It was explained, true, but still, its handling didn’t sit right with me.

I enjoyed reading about all the sensual hijinks that Harek and Camille explored while they were falling in love. Ms. Hill always has her heroes and heroines have fun during sex and Even Vampires Get the Blues delivers the smiles. Each scene has a bit of dialogue, laughter and the requisite Viking S Spot. I wish I knew how to find it; frankly I’m envious of the heroines.

Even Vampires Get the Blues is an action-filled quick read that was greatly entertaining. I liked Camille’s personality and Harek’s preoccupation with her. If I had to choose one of them as being the most interesting and well-rounded, I’d pick Camille. Her conflict, both familial and personal, was easy to connect with. There’s a lot to like about this novel but my sincerest wish is that somehow, fact would follow fiction, and a certain group would get their comeuppance as only a Vangel could deliver. Wouldn’t that be awesome? Vangels rock!

There was a plot point that I would have liked to see addressed. I can’t mention what it was without giving away spoilers, but it was something that I would have logically expected to see the characters discuss with each other eventually because of how much time they spent dancing around it. It was a little odd to me that this never happened. Had the characters talked about it at least once, I would have given this story a much higher rating as it was otherwise well done.

This is one of the funniest things I’ve read in a long time. The author’s snarky approach to the subject matter made me chuckle. It was brutally honest at times, but it never came across as mean-spirited to me. Sometimes the truth isn’t exactly easy to hear, but it’s much better to be honest about these things than it is to pretend that everything is okay.

Simmie Johnson was born the son of a slave. He was also a genius. After earning a PhD in physics from Tuskegee Institute, he wrote a paper outlining a theory for time travel, including plans for a time machine—called a Chronocar—which was published in a scientific journal in the early 1900s . Since the technology required to build the chronocar did not yet exist, the paper and its brilliant writer faded into obscurity.

A century later, a young Illinois Tech student, Tony Carpenter, discovers the journal article and decides to build a Chronocar so he can travel back to 1919 to meet the black scientist he hopes to emulate.

Unfortunately, time is not on his side.

It’s one thing to read about the past. It’s quite another to experience it for yourself.

One of the things that I enjoyed the most about this story was how it handled the idea of time travel. The author clearly spent a great deal time of thinking through this topic logically and scientifically. It’s hard to discuss the specific details of it without giving away spoilers, but Mr. Bellinger’s hard work on these sections definitely paid off. This is the kind of science fiction I love to read.

I would have liked to see a little more attention paid to the transitions between the past and present day, especially when it came to the dialogue. The speaking styles were so different in each era that it did take me a moment to adjust from how I’m accustomed to people talking to each other in 2015 to what people sounded like in 1919. This is a minor criticism of an otherwise wonderful tale, though.

The character development was excellent. I really enjoyed seeing how Tony and Simmie reacted to everything that happened to them, especially after I’d gotten to know them better. Both characters learned quickly which is an important thing to do while on a time travel adventure. While I don’t know if the author is planning to write a sequel, I’d be thrilled to find out what happens next if he ever decides to write one.

The Chronocar is a must read, especially for anyone who enjoys time travel or science fiction as much as I do!

She needs Bricker’s help to control her new abilities, even as she tries to resist his relentless seduction. Choosing between the world she knows and the eternity he offers is impossible. But Justin is fighting for his life mate—maybe even his life—and he’ll break every rule to do it.

Ms. Sands has done it again. She took a premise I was not comfortable with and turned it around to create an amazing romance that was impossible to put down once the conflict became clear. I actually enjoyed myself and relished the convoluted process of the hero and heroine falling in love.

First, fans of the series know that Bricker has been a pain in the behind to a lot of the other Immortals when they found their life mates. He was relentless in making fun of them and enjoyed himself to the max. In About a Vampire Justin Bricker gets his comeuppance delivered to him in spades. I figured out easily enough that two of his buddies had it in for him but it wasn’t until the very end that the author let me in on the secret. There was one more person turning the payback screw on Justin and I never would have guessed. That revelation made me laugh out loud. I bet other readers will get a chuckle out of it too.

The fact that Ms. Sands had Holly actually honoring her marriage vows impressed me. The heroine was loyal, steadfast and pragmatic, to a point. However, she is only human and temptation is only a kiss away. Knowing how life mates work in this series, it was only a matter of time. But how was the author going to handle it knowing how the heroine feels about her being a wife? Interesting ploy and it worked.

And, of any hero in the series, Justin Bricker is the perfect hero to be in such a romantic pickle because in all the books in the series, he sort of had it easy but in About a Vampire, his free ride has come to a screeching halt. I was completely entertained by his confused and confounded situation. I mean, he knows he has to respect her wishes and her vows, he knows that he can’t interfere with a mortal’s marriage and even knowing all of that doesn’t stop him from imagining, conniving, yearning and trying to come up with clever solutions that fail at every turn. That is, until he comes up with a plan.

Readers of my reviews know how much I’m in disfavor of highly detailed sexual dream sequences. I consider them fillers and a waste of space. However, Ms. Sands has cured that failing with shared dreaming. In those kinds of dreams, two protagonists are experiencing the same things and are affected by them simultaneously. That means they create ripples of effect in their waking lives and I thoroughly approve of that approach. Shared dreams do have an effect on their relationship and plot movement, as such, they are worth reading every single spicy moment because there are details not to be missed that are relevant later on.

Unlike many books in the Argeneau series, there are no villains to combat and no one to rescue in dramatic fashion; this is a solid character driven romance. The fact that Justin turned his life mate, a woman who was already married, is the biggest kind of personal conflict a story could have. How the author managed to get around that ginormous hurdle is a feat of great imagination and storytelling genius.

Some readers might think it ‘convenient’ in the way the conflict was ultimately resolved, but I found it fits with my needs as a romance reader. I want the happy ever after, and I want a tidied up, all threads accounted for, kind of ending especially when a story is not a cliff hanger. Ms. Sands satisfied that need and that’s good enough for me.

About a Vampire is as sexy, fun, entertaining and delightful as a reader could wish. Fans should get plenty of chuckles at Bricker’s expense, especially in light of all his past shenanigans. Holly is really cute and her history is rather interesting. It’s that personal history that lends itself to the belief in the final outcome. Holly is Justin Bricker’s life mate, and it’s a wonderful thing. I definitely recommend this story to new and established fans alike.

I found this to be a funny and sweet story. The sex between Galen and Zach is hot, but not boundary pushing – so I think will be good for readers who enjoy a bit of light M/M but nothing too heavy. Instead, she thinks about Anderson constantly. This new hard and soft side of her is both illuminating and surprising but what she learns next will either save her or set her free. All at the soft whisper of a safe word.

I loved this book from beginning to end. The ugly parts and the pretty. The glamour and the underbelly. Drury Jamison shows us the world of submissive men and the vast rainbow of characters at any given BDSM event. Most novels I’ve read showcase the Dom, but not this one. This one glorifies strong women and the men behind them. It also shows the power struggle in some circumstances and just how real secrets can get in the cold light of day.

There was nothing I didn’t like about the book. The characters were rich, the scenes described beautifully and the interaction between the MC’s absolutely beautiful. Seeing Silver flourish and become the Domme as Anderson showed her what home meant was amazing and I had tears in my eyes on more than one occasion. It also had cutting edge mystery that kept you guessing who the murderer was until the moment it was revealed. Wow….wow.

I want more of Detective Silver and her man Anderson and I feel privileged to have had the opportunity to read this novel. Fans of Kallypso Masters, Sierra Cartwright and others that delve into the healing aspect of BDSM will adore this book.
