So when her brother, Kael, unknowingly sends her to live at a cousin’s secret brothel, she escapes to court where she meets the arrogant Highlander, Saer MacLeod…

Saer is considered savage even by most Highlanders. It will take an extraordinary woman to handle him, and Nareen enchants him like no one he’s met before. When a furious Kael threatens revenge against the cousin who wronged his sister, Saer knows its his one chance to win over Nareen and reclaim the respect his family deserves…and he’s going to take it.

This was my first time experiencing a highlander story, and it was well worth it. Nareen and Saer definitely have a story that entertains between Nareen’s reluctance to marry any man, Saer’s duty to re-build his lands, and the enemies whom seem to be adding up. This story never had a dull moment.

One thing that struck me from the very beginning was that Nareen was definitely not your quiet, demure woman. She was spitfire who challenged anyone who she felt infringed on her freedom. She knew who she was, and that she did not fit into the ideal female of the time, but that did not stop her from being who she was no matter what, even if it meant being alone the rest of her life. This also made her stubborn at times, and blind to what was so obvious to me, that Saer would never want to change the part of her he loved most: her spirit. I found Nareen to be the ideal heroine because she can take care of herself if need be. She will be with a man because she wants him, not because she needs him.

Saer is the right man to not restrict Nareen.  Instead, he helps her realize that he wants her for who she is no matter the cost. He understands her reservations since he has his own dicey childhood, which only shows him that they are kindred hearts. I like that Saer was firm when needed with Nareen, but also knew when to back off or be sweet and gentle with her. It was clear to me he was a keeper and a man any wife would treasure. Plus his savage side was necessary in keeping his people safe, yet never consumed him or made him cruel.

The multiple plotlines in the story really keep me on the edge of my seat from beginning to end.  Whether it was the bratty mistress Abigail, or the fight for respect among their people, Nareen and Saer never seemed to have it easy, which really helped to push the story line, and their relationship, right along. While this may have been my first highlander story it definitely makes me want to pick up others and see if they are just as entertaining and all consuming as this one.

After a near fatal accident leaves Nate in limbo, he must find a way to get through to Cora before time runs out and she is forced into life eternal with the evil wizard, Elias Stafford.

Some things can be stalled or avoided altogether, but destiny isn’t one of them.

As soon as Nathaniel began narrating his tale I knew he was going to have something worthwhile to say. His personality had a lot of rough edges. They occasionally made me wish he’d slow down and think about the consequences of his actions first, but his impulsivity and tendency to be blunt also rounded out his personality. Is he likable? No, not always. He is intriguing, though, and that matters a lot more to this reader.

Nathaniel and Cora’s relationship moved incredibly fast. While I’m not opposed to the idea of two people instantly being attracted to one another, it was hard for me to understand why these particular characters fell in love when they knew nothing about each other. Their personalities and interests were quite different from one another. I don’t expect as many details from a short story as I would from a full length novel, but seeing them discover more similarities over the course of a few conversations first would have made their blossoming love more believable.

The villain in this tale is deliciously frightening. Other characters discuss him for a while before he shows up, and the anticipation of seeing what he’s actually like kept me glued to the page. I learned enough about Elias to understand why everyone was so anxious about him. The scenes that included him were my favorite ones, though, and I looked forward to every single one of them.

I’d recommend Of Fire and Roses to anyone in the mood for something paranormal and romantic that most definitely is not actually a paranormal romance. This a unique twist on themes that are common in both genres, and I, for one, am glad I read it.

I Killed My Muse (May she rest in peace…)

I’m coming clean. As a writer of hopeful, humorous contemporary romances, you may not believe the blood-thirsty streak that dwells within, but the fact is: I killed my muse, and I’m not sorry I did.
You see, after slogging along day after day on my book, LUCK OF THE DRAW, with all the usual pulling of hair and gnashing of teeth, my muse finally showed up. Meanwhile, the kids interrupted me while not bleeding, vomiting or on fire, the dogs were barking about nothing (again) and I was out of coffee, and I said to my muse, “You know what? Your timing couldn’t be worse! You are unreliable and fickle and give me half a good idea and then disappear again only to leave me to pick up the pieces. Well, no more!” And I thwacked her with a bag of chocolate (the milk chocolate kind which are bad for you and muses alike), buried her under a patch of what I think is poison ivy in the back lot and toasted her good riddance with boxed wine.

And if you are a writer, I hear your cheers.

Anyone who has been around writers for any length of time will have heard the inevitable lamentations about uncooperative and/or absent muses. For all the belly-aching we writers do about our muse–“She’s not talking to me” or “My muse is on holiday”–I think we need to take back the reins from this fickle fairy of fortune and call her out for the useless charlatan she is.

First of all, how much work does this muse do, anyway? I mean, who is slogging the kids to and from activities, cleaning the litter box, cooking meals and occasionally vacuuming? Not ‘can’t break a fingernail’ muse, that’s for sure! No, we writers are doing all this behind-the-writing-scenes stuff. Because, the reality is, no writing gets done unless LIFE gets done, and I don’t see my muse stepping up to bring aging relatives to doctor’s appointments or unclogging the toilets. It’s hard to drift into story-land when you know you have a sink full of dirty dishes and the car needs servicing, but does she ever pull her weight?

No, instead, in those few, precious, all-too-fragmented bits of time we are able to carve out of our lives to write, we are expected to sit back and wait for you-know-who to show up. Well I don’t know about you, but I don’t have time to wait for my muse to alight upon my desktop and inspire me, cheerfully take all the credit for my great ideas, then flit off again.

So I got rid of my muse, and I don’t miss her at all.

You see, I’ve found better, more reliable writing inspiration for LUCK OF THE DRAW and my other ‘Betting on Romance’ books, starting with:

#1) My Dearest Husband. I know it’s a cliché, but the truth is it’s easier to write about romance and happily-ever-afters when you are living your own love story. I write romance to celebrate those healthy, joy-filled relationships that DO exist in this world. And if DH wants to take credit for the steamy love scenes between Kate and Jim, I’ll give him that, too. Who’s to quibble?

#2) My Local Writer’s Group. Writing is lonely, hard work even if we do get to work in our pajamas. If you are a writer and are 100% confident in yourself and your work, then by all means, write in your hermitage and live off locusts and honey. But if you’re like 99% of us, you need reassurance now and again (okay, daily) that you’re on the right path/not completely crazy. Through the years, the books, the requests, the rejections, and ‘life events’ I’ve had the support of a truly empowering and beautiful writer’s group. The banter, the encouragement, the hard questions and tough love that come through in my books starts with this lovely group of women. So, forget about your muse and join a writer’s group. You’ll get shining examples of character, grit, loyalty and real life to inspire your books. Plus, they often share chocolate.

#3) My Critique Partner (CP)/Plotting Pals. Over time, if you are very, very lucky, wise enough to recognize the positive energy in those around you, and quick enough to strike before someone else nabs them, you may win yourself a gem of a writing buddy. They come by all names, in singles or groups, but the one thing they have in common is this: a.) they ‘get’ your voice and genuinely enjoy your writing style and b.) they give you advice and feedback in a manner that you can hear. I have been blessed with both, whether it’s a plotting pal who speaks with a Scottish accent (Chopping that favorite scene suddenly doesn’t sound so bad when her lilting voice suggests I, “…cut a wee bit–snip! snip! snip!”) or my CP who gives me clarity and direction with her uncanny knack of honing in on and giving voice to issues I knew in my heart of hearts weren’t working but thought I could get away with. (Bottom line: I can’t.) And finally…

#4) My Readers. The biggest inspiration for me has nothing to do with the creative process–it’s when my stories get into the hands of readers. It’s easy to feel overwhelmed by the harsher realities in life. I watch the news, too. I get that. I write because I want to help my readers escape for a little while to a place where love, hope and happiness prevail. (And if I happen to harbor a muse-whacking dark side, you won’t tell, will you?)

So, what is YOUR passion? What inspires you? Share!

If only life had a refresh button…

Kate Mitchell never planned to be a 31 year-old widowed single mom, but when her soon-to-be-EX husband up and dies, her dreams of finishing college and starting over are thrown in the air like a game of 52 pick-up. When she’s given a leave of absence from work and told to “quit or recommit,” Kate retreats to idyllic Sugar Falls, New Hampshire, to figure out whether she can discover her passion and pay the bills. Cue the fresh air, summer sunshine and one sexy local contractor.

Tall, dark, and handy…

Volunteer fireman and all-around hunky guy in a toolbelt, Jim Pearson has sworn off complicated women with messy baggage. They cling to his nice-guy stability and skills with a power saw just long enough to straighten out their lives and move on… but then he meets the cute single mom staying at Grams’ lake house for the summer.

While a sizzling attraction draws them together, Jim’s distrust of complicated women and Kate’s incredibly complicated life threaten to pull them apart. But forces beyond their control—match-making grandmothers, the lazy backdrop of summer, and their own reckoning with the past—conspire to make them risk it all… and bet on love.

Enjoy an excerpt:

“But when I think about going back… to a job I know is safe and secure… I can’t breathe.” She felt her arms grow cold despite the sunshine. “It’s like my future is closing in and there’s no way out. And the more I think about it, the more I realize that going back would mean I’m giving up hoping for something better. And… and I can’t bring myself to give up on me quite yet.”

She stared at him in the silence that followed, her chest rising and falling, feeling brittle and defiant all at once.

But then he tugged her hand until she sat beside him on the porch steps. He blew out a breath. “No one’s asking you to give up on yourself.”

“You think I’m giving up,” she said. “But I’m not. I’m not throwing my hands up in despair. I’m not trying to quit. I’m trying to let go of the handlebars to see if I can do this without help.”

“I don’t understand what that—”

“I’m saying… I know you mean well, but you’ve got to let me figure this out on my own.”

After a long moment, he nodded. “Okay,” he said, and he turned, the corners of his eyes crinkling in that warm, lovely way that always turned Kate’s insides to jelly. “You may not believe it, but I do believe there’s something better waiting for you.”

“You’re talking to a practically unemployed widow,” she sighed. “It’d be hard not to go uphill from here.”

Investigator Tristan Bonnaud has one aim in life— to make sure that his half-brother George can’t ever ruin his life again. So when the pesky Lady Zoe Keane, the daughter of the Earl of Olivier, shows up demanding that the Duke’s Men find a mysterious gypsy woman, he seizes the opportunity to also hunt for a gypsy friend who knows secrets about George. Tristan doesn’t expect to uncover Lady Zoe’s family secrets, as well… or end up falling for the woman who will risk all to discover the truth

How the Scoundrel Seduces is a wickedly tangled weave that delighted all my senses. As the story unfolded, I was shocked as to the extent of the poison the villain wielded and I became quite bloodthirsty in wanting his comeuppance. Ms. Jeffries has a devious mind because I had to wait and watch the drama and suspense affect Zoe and Tristan throughout the tale and I couldn’t put the book down.

This novel is a standalone read but I do encourage readers to read the previous two books in the Duke’s Men series, What the Duke Desires and When the Rogue Returns, because the deeds of the villain’s treachery tainted all of them. When the ultimate confrontation occurs in How the Scoundrel Seduces, it’s made that much more powerful by my having read the previous two. In fact, it turns out that there was an unknown victim and tragedy that was perpetrated and it broke my heart.

There is a secret that the blurb mentions about Zoe. What astounded me was the connection it forged with the first book in the series. Even though the Ms. Jeffries does include enough back story for a new reader to understand and follow the current plot, readers and fans of the series will find it especially intriguing because it means the author had to step back and create this whole world while keeping the underlying thread and its effects woven throughout. I’m impressed because she succeeded wonderfully.

I enjoyed Mr. Keane. His character kept me guessing because I didn’t know if he was a good guy or a meanie. He was sharp and I kept thinking he’d be a great asset to the Duke’s Men and then I would question his motives and start worrying for Zoe all over again. Jeremy Keane was a wonderful foil that kept me guessing.

The romance between Tristan and Zoe was full of spark, sauce, sensual seduction and fun. It was a delight to watch their love grow. Of course, one of them was a bit clueless what being in love was all about. It was sweet to see how it all resolved.

Secondary characters were important and made this book feel like I was living in a second world. It helps that the previous heroes and heroines from the first two books pop in to help out. In fact, there are these constant digs directed at Dom about someone named Jane that turns the man into a prune. If the author’s intent is to wiggle a juicy bookworm in front of me, rest assured, I’ve taken the bait. It sounds like a story that needs to be told – if only because Dom is the last bachelor standing. We can’t have that now, can we? *grin*

The happy ever after was wrapped up with surprising poignancy. I never expected it to take the turn it did and because of it, it elevated this story from a good read to a really good read. As hard as the act of forgiving is, the benefits are definitely felt by both the characters and me. It was rather emotional.

How the Scoundrel Seduces captures a reader’s imagination and takes them on a journey of discovery, intrigue and romance. It’s a well written story that is sure to entertain if only because Tristen and Zoe are wonderful together. To historical romance fans and readers of Ms. Jeffries’ books, I definitely recommend reading this, her latest novel. She has another winner.

An outbreak of a mysterious illness threatens the ordered world of Vickie and George. George becomes ill, and Vickie is left to care for him, keep him safe, as well as trying to work out the cause of the mysterious illness. Vickie must take charge in her world in order to survive.

Some people know what they want to do in life right away, but for others it takes time to find their niche. Vickie is part of the latter group. Worse yet, she’s only just realized it!
The levitra canada drug not only helps you to get the proper erection and thus it leads to unsatisfactory sexual life. Vickie is an intelligent protagonist who clearly knows what she wants out of life. I didn’t always agree with the choices she makes, but I respected the thought she put into them. I felt like I knew Vickie pretty well by the time I reached the final scene, and that isn’t an easy thing to accomplish in something this length.

This story is set in the early 1920s, yet the characters behave as though they were living in 2014. There is leeway in the science fiction genre when it comes to predicting how society would have evolved if a few key moments were changed, but it was difficult to believe that individuals living in this time and place would have actually done and said some of the things that happened in the plot. Their speech and mannerisms were just too casual for the time period.

The chemistry between Vickie and George is sizzling. My favorite scenes involve the moments they steal away from his insanely busy work schedule. Their non-sexual interactions tended to be a little brusque at first due to how much time they’ve spent apart over the last few years, so it was nice to see them get along with one another as they attempted to reconnect.

There were a few different instances when the wrong word was used in a sentence. Every replacement word was real, and some of them were only a letter or two off from what I think the author was intending to say. It was distracting to stop and figure out what the original word must have been, though, and this tale would have earned a higher rating had it gone through another round of editing before it was published.

The disease that is plaguing George’s patients is frightening. At first I was surprised by how much time it took for it to become the main focus of Vickie’s attention. Building up to this conflict was a good decision, though, as this reader needed that extra time to get to know the characters beforehand. I can’t say much more about this subplot without giving away spoilers, but I was pleasantly surprised with how it all played out.

Change of Heart is a steampunk-inspired, science fiction romance that I’d suggest to anyone who is a fan of any or all of these genres.

Each of their meetings was related to one brutal crime in the past four and half years. However, there were more secrets behind these crimes than anyone involved imagined. Who was truly responsible for these crimes? Who was completely innocent and who was truly guilty? More surprises awaited these two women. Death was preying on them to become new victims. Would they suffer like their victims in the past? Who would be the next sacrifice to the cruelty of fate? Only one thing was certain. A new death was guaranteed very soon. Who would be allowed to survive?

I couldn’t predict any of the plot twists in advance, and that isn’t something that normally happens to me due how familiar I am with the mystery genre. It was a lot of fun to be kept guessing until the very end. Ms. Chloe has a vivid imagination and she clearly took full advantage of it when writing this tale.

The pacing felt disjointed. It’s divided up into a few different sections that almost seem to function as their own stories. While each section moved along fairly smoothly, transitioning among them was sometimes bumpy due to how many different time the perspective switched from one character to the next. I appreciated the backstory that later sections provide, but it was a little too detailed for something this length.

In the beginning I was sure I had Paige figured out. The hints about her past are illuminating, but no sooner did I think I’d pieced them all together correctly than another twist would knock them apart again. I enjoy meeting protagonists who defy categorization and make their own rules. Paige is definitely a complex woman, so it was rewarding to figure out what makes her tick and why she behaves the way she does.

I’d recommend No Last Tattoo to anyone who likes mysteries that are not easily unravelled. There are a lot of tantalizing clues here to be discovered, but none of them are easy to fit together!

From the first book in the series, I have loved every moment. This third book just reaffirms my love for the series as well as the Science Fiction Genre. Even though its the third book in the series, I don’t see why it can’t be read as a stand alone. None of the other characters are directly involved in either of the other books. Proposition is a short read, with just enough detail to make the story flow. I loved all three characters.

Geof is a strong character. He helped Keirah when they were young and made it his sole purpose to make sure she would be safe. I’m not sure if he thought everything through. Earth is dying and Keirah’s husband has made plans to get them off the planet. How? The plans are to Auction themselves off as a couple to an Alphan warrior. The Alpheans are short on women and some will take a couple just to have the wife. Knowing what he had to do to keep both him and his wife safe didn’t make it any easier to do. As short as the story is, you can still feel the emotions run wild. Keirah a loyal wife that is to be a mate to a man she’s never met. Geoffrey fights with his status. How will he fit in? Better yet, will he fit in? Krig wanted a mate. Now he has one and also her husband! What is he going to do with him? Just to mix it up, the writer throws in a bit of danger. Nice. There was a few scenes that had me fanning my face. The author didn’t push the male-male interaction other than a bit of touching. I really like the series and the style of the writers. I think there are two different writers in this series. That was very intriguing and they both made it work. I look forward to reading the rest in the series.

Personal Protection specialist Ava Rome follows three rules: A professional never calls attention to herself or her principal; a professional never leaves her principal; and, the most important rule, a professional never gets involved with her principal. To break the rules is to die.

Paul, her principal, comes from a powerful family with many enemies. Murder and kidnapping are just means of business in Paul’s family. Ava believes he is not like the rest of them. Good looking, intelligent, he has everything women want. And many women want him, which makes Ava’s job harder. Does she want him too? She recognizes that the greatest threat comes not from the outside, but from her own growing desire. In order to save them both, Ava must leave Paul, against his wishes and in violation of one of her rules.

Ava was wrong. A greater threat lurks outside Paul’s secure compound. Two threats, in fact. One human and the other a hurricane. Ava focuses on the hurricane. She and Paul make preparations to ride out the storm. It arrives and so does the intruder. Now Ava is in a fight for her life as nature’s fury assaults the house from the outside and a serial rapist stalks her on the inside.

Ava Rome is a professional bodyguard, one with rules. And Paul, handsome, sexy Paul, broke quite a few of them. But as the son of a prominent businessman, a wealthy and powerful one with many enemies, Ava finds herself drawn to the situation. This is an interesting short story, written in a procedural tone about a bodyguard and her client.

While there is certainly an attraction between Ava and Paul, there is no mistaking this quick tale for a typical romance. It’s told in a gritty no-nonsense manner like the old-school, hard-boiled detective novels. The author managed to surprise me with a few twists and drew me in with Ava’s professional, almost dispassionate, descriptive manner. Readers looking for a romantic, rose-tinted view of the protection business likely won’t enjoy this story. I thoroughly enjoyed it though, pleased with the hard as nails heroine and delighted by the twists the author added into the story, some which I could guess at, some which took me completely by surprise.

A fresh outlook on the rules and tests one would encounter being a bodyguard, this is an interesting book that captured my attention and held it throughout the short story. A part of me wished there’d been a few more chapters (even an epilogue to explain what happened to Ava and Paul afterwards) to give complete closure, but the story itself was very well written. Recommended.

Whisky, Large is a mystery filled with humor. It is very easy to laugh out loud while reading it. I liked Whiskey, but my favorite character was her neighbor, a nine year old child genius named Chester, who speaks canine. Chester’s mother is a singer-harpist pop star and she is rarely home. Chester is taken care of by a host of personal assistants and dogs, but in reality, he takes care of them, as well as the rest of the neighborhood. Chester has even taken an online birthing class so that he’ll be able to help Whiskey if he’s needed.

There are several mysteries to solve in this story. Whiskey keeps being called in by Chief Judy “Jenx” Jenkins since both she and Chester are volunteer deputies, but Whiskey has too much on her mind with the imminent arrival of her first baby to give much thought to helping the police. In fact, the mysteries do get solved, primarily because of the villains’ incompetency. But a lot of fun is had by all along the way, especially the dogs.

Whiskey is a large woman to begin with, over six feet tall, and she has gained sixty pounds during her pregnancy, so she has a hard time moving around by the time she is ready to deliver. But I have to admit that I found the pregnancy jokes to be overdone, including the use of a goat prod to get Whiskey in and out of cars.

Whiskey, Large is a very funny romp through the happenings in Magnet Springs. Mystery fans, especially those who are also dog lovers, will surely have fun laughing their way through this delightful book.
