Chevelle Donahue thought going into work would be just like any other boring day at the mall. Working retail was lame no matter what happened.

A terrorist attack changes everything – an attack from aliens of all things. The patrons are given two options: comply or else. Complying means giving in to a new set of rules and changing her entire life. “Or else” means she has no chance of going home again.

She must figure out the truth behind why the aliens are holding everyone hostage. In doing so, she risks her chance at freedom – but by the time she learns what’s really happening, she might not want it.

One hundred and fifty-two people are kidnapped by aliens from a mall in Minnesota, and Chevelle Donahue, her co-worker Wicken Sanders, and a teen heartthrob Timber Hudson are among those who are abducted. Wicken tries to resist so he gets labeled as an undesirable. Chevelle and Timber cooperate so they receive much better treatment. Nevertheless all three of them are now captives on the alien’s space ship.

This is an exciting story which is told from three different perspectives. Overall, that is an effective way to portray multiple aspects of the abduction. However, there were times, especially when things were told from Timber’s perspective that I would forget who the “I” was as his voice was actually very similar to Chevelle’s, in spite of the obvious differences. The novel could also use a bit of editing, especially in the matter of pronoun usage, but thankfully there weren’t too many goofs, such as saying “…against Wicken and I”, to put me off.

I really like the three main characters, especially Chevelle. She is very strong and she has a good heart. The pacing of the story is good, building tension as the story progresses, and I think that the portrayal of the adjustment to a new life is done realistically. I enjoyed all the descriptions of the spaceship and its facilities. The Achlivians have a very advanced technology, and the reasons for their abductions finally become clear as the novel concludes.

The ending is a real cliff-hanger! The author has set up the series in a very suspenseful way and I hope that the next book is published soon. Fantasy readers are in a for an exciting ride with Displaced.

Horror is everywhere…

It’s waiting behind a closed door, sitting in an ordinary chair, or following you on a country walk. Perhaps it’s washed up on a tranquil beach, hanging at a local skate park, recorded on an MP3 player hard drive, or even embedded somewhere deep within the design of something as simple and innocuous as a supermarket barcode.

Horror is everywhere, in the shadows and in the light.

It takes on every shape, comes in every conceivable size.
That is the reason; cialis mastercard downtownsault.org they have to pay a lot to do with a man s sexual health. This can help bring blood flow to the penile district for better erection with the assistance http://downtownsault.org/pec-vape-shop/ generic levitra of this generic medicine.
But most of all it’s right where you live.

Fear can be many things: an early warning system, a false alarm, a cheap thrill, or even the sublimation of stereotypes you’d never admit to believing in. The question is, how do you know when it’s real?

In “Just Another Horror Story,” a couple in the middle of a torrid love affair check into a hotel room for a night of debauchery. Little do Terry and Nancy know what actually awaits them. This tale was a great introduction to Mr. McMahon’s work. While I was able to anticipate some of the twists and turns in it I was pleasantly surprised by how often he made me second-guess my predictions about what would happen next.

“Trog Boy Ran” is by far the best story in this collection. Shortly Niles Reedman responds to a recent, painful breakup by stalking his ex-girlfriend and very odd things begin to occur around him. The pacing in this piece is so well done it felt almost cinematic. As disturbing as it was for me to step into the mind of a chilling and extremely dangerous protagonist, I couldn’t stop reading until I reached the end of Niles’ adventure.

I desperately wanted to like “The Chair.” In it a boy named Ben battles with despair, loneliness and an undisclosed malaise as his mother struggles with her own mental illness. The introduction caught my attention right away, but I had trouble understanding the symbolism of certain objects in Ben’s life and well as what was happening in the final scene. The sequel to this tale, “The Table,” answers some questions before asking the reader to sort out a brand new batch of them. The concept is alluring, but given the subtlety of what is happening these particular stories may have worked better as a novella.

This pattern repeats itself a few other times in this collection. Every entry includes at least one surprising, frightening, or unexpected element, but some of their horrors are a little difficult to unravel. I found something I really enjoyed about every single tale. That isn’t something that normally occurs for me when I review larger anthologies. Had a little more time been spent planting clues about what was truly happening in the tales that skipped over as much exposition as possible this book would have easily earned a much higher rating.

Save some time to savour the story notes at the end of this novel. Reading them made me feel like I was sitting down with Mr. McMahon to have a personal conversation about where his ideas come from and why he wrote certain characters the way he did. This section is a definite highlight of the novel, but it should be saved until the very end to avoid spoilers.

Where You Live is a solid collection of psychological horror. It’s a good choice for anyone in the mood for a thought-provoking, understated read that becomes more frightening the more one thinks about what they just read.

When Glory finally agrees to a date, Ryan feels like shouting hallelujah. He only left his mate to hunt down the man who’d shot her, but convincing the stubborn woman she has a permanent place at his side is tougher than he thought.

Their date takes a turn for the bizarre when Glory thanks Ryan for the series of romantic gifts—gifts Ryan never sent. It seems her past is coming back to bite her, and before it has a chance to sink its teeth in and tear her out of his life, Ryan will have to bare it all, right down to his soul, to protect the woman he loves. Even from herself.

Ryan Williams knew that Glory Walsh with her soft blue curls and sky blue eyes was his mate.  Getting her to accept him and his bear was entirely another matter. He knew she had been hurt, abused and abandoned by her family, so he had to prove to her that he would always be there and that she would always be protected. He had to do this fast because his mate dreams were becoming more and more vivid.

Glory Walsh didn’t believe that Ryan would not leave her.  After all he did once although he came back — the fact still remained that he left. She was however starting to soften towards him but something was still keeping her from becoming his mate.

Bear Naked is a very enjoyable story, one that is filled with humor, sarcasm, shifters and mystery. It will keep you engaged from beginning to end and you will find yourself chuckling throughout the book. The first book I read by this author was Bear Necessities which is the first book in the Halle Shifter series. That book was about Ryan’s cousin Alex “Bunny” Bunsun and Tabitha Garwood. I was so entertained by that book that I read the second in the series, and was left wanting more.

Bear Naked was not just about Ryan getting Glory to accept him as a mate, but it involved the disappearance of her twin sister Hope, and the search for her brother Temp and younger sister Faith. As this mystery unraveled this reader became more and more invested in the characters.

Dana Marie Bell has a way of drawing you into her books; you immediately love the characters because they talk to each other the way you would speak to your friends and family. Her characters are down to earth they just happen to have been a little quirky and they can change into Bears, Foxes, Wolves and Pumas.

This can be read as a standalone, but I would suggest that you start with the first book because most of the characters are introduced and it makes it easier to know all the players. So the question is whether I would recommend this book, and the answer is a resounding yes. I would recommend all the books in this series thus far, and I look forward to reading Hope’s story which I know is going to be a good one.

He didn’t commit suicide but who’s going to believe her…

Frustrated at being fired from her latest job and overwhelmed by her consolatory family, Sam decides to move to the family’s cabin at the lake. A place she hasn’t been since her dad committed suicide there, twenty years before. Or did he? Snooping is something she’s good at but someone seems to be taking offense to her looking too closely at what has been happening at the lake. What she discovers is shocking. Now she must uncover what’s real and what’s not. All that she learned growing up, may be false.

Keegan, who has recently moved to the area to finish his latest book, is also trying to find out if his grandfather, who’d passed away ten years before, died of natural causes or was murdered? The descendants of the four families, who own the land around the lagoon, are dying off.

Since Sam and Keegan are the only ones questioning the deaths, they find themselves working together to seek the truth. Are people being murdered? Who would benefit from their deaths? Why would there be barricades and armed guards at the north end of the lake? To stay alive, Sam and Keegan must find the answers and convince others, before more people are killed… including them.

An intense ride, Tainted Waters unexpectedly kept me on the edge of my seat. I say unexpectedly, because it started out a little slow … I had to force myself to read the first few chapters because I was expecting an adrenaline rush from the start. I’m glad I was reading this for a review and not just for pleasure, because it meant I had to keep going through the slowish start. We’re introduced to Sam, a woman who drifts aimlessly from job to job and really doesn’t know where her place in the world is (to the frustration of her family) and to Keegan, who’s only recently become acquainted with a grandfather he wasn’t supposed to know, and who died unexpectedly.

As the book begins, Sam is fired for daring to write a story for the paper … we don’t know what the story is about, but her boss has a fit about it. She and Keegan literally run into each other as she dashed out the door, desperate to go home and like her wounds.

Once Keegan starts to do some digging, though, things start rolling. It takes a bit to get a full head of steam, but when it does watch out, hang on to your hats and make sure you have plenty of time to finish the book because you won’t want to put it down.

The author weaves a pretty complex mystery with its share of potential bad guys and red herrings. Odds are you won’t figure out “whodunnit” until the end, and you’ll enjoy the trip to get there. The characters are bold and interesting. But don’t expect this to be a romance … it’s not, not really, which is why I’ve categorized this review in the mystery/suspense category. Sure there are some sparks between Sam and Keegan, but that’s not the driving force behind this book, nor it is particularly integral to the story.

So, overall, I really liked Tainted Waters. I may not have finished this had I not been reviewing it, and I would have missed out on a good suspense novel if I’d stopped. Do yourself a favor and grab a copy. And don’t be tempted to put it down … once it grabs you, it won’t let you go. Enjoy the ride. I did!

“With this Ring” – The Unimaginable. When Katherine forgets her little black dress for a must-attend event, all turns into something utterly romantic and unforgettable in the end.

When time is on limited supply, read a short story. That’s my mantra and I really enjoyed reading three of them in Bug Stuff and Other Stories.

The first story is Bug Stuff and I loved the opening line in this one and the fact that the heroine admits she’s never heard a man shout help ever before. It’s a cute story about two co-workers who deal with a bug problem in the break room. The dialogue is snappy, the pace fast, and it made me smile.

Second up is Just Desserts which was really well planned out for such a short read. I thought of it as a mini-me romance story with two characters you hoped would find some way to get together before the night was over.

The final story is With This Ring and I loved the humor that Ms. Batman injected into the plot and dialogue. My favorite part was the fact that the heroine thinks one thing and then something wonderful happens to her.

If you’re looking for a short, fun and romantic read, give this trio a try.

Alexis Joplin, popular host of the travel show, Overnight Stays, is embarking on her final scouting expedition with her partner and best friend, Shane Fowler. Over the course of the last two years, the duo has grown closer not only at work, but outside of the job. While their friends and co-workers may whisper that something more than friendship is the source of their mutual admiration, they deny it even as their personal feelings are reaching a critical apex.

Shrouded in the dark beauty of a hundred year old inn, while lightning flashes and thunder rumbles, neither Alexis nor Shane can hold on to the pretense any longer. They give in to one night of passion with the promise that in the morning, they’ll awake as friends.

Can straight men and women maintain long-term friendships without developing romantic feelings for one another? Does the answer to this question change once sex enters the equation? Alexis and Shane are about to test the limits of their friendship and find out the truth about mixing friendship and attraction once and for all.

The strong chemistry between Alexis and Shane is what makes this story so much fun to read. Their inside jokes and faux-flirty banter make their friendship come alive. Neither one of them is perfect by any means, but they have long since learned how to bring out the best in one another. Seeing how they’ve learned to adjust to one another’s idiosyncrasies was by far my favorite part of reading this book.

Repeated typos and grammar and spelling errors lead me to give this novella a lower rating than it would have otherwise received. While it was easy to figure out what author intended to say most of the time, the actual meanings of a few sentences remain a mystery to me.

The beautiful setting and well-paced plot kept me interested in what was happening to these characters. There’s something romantic about staying in a cozy bed and breakfast over a stormy weekend, and the descriptions of what was happening to the land and sky fits into Shane and Alexis’ story quite well.

One Stormy Night is an enjoyable tale that is a good choice for anyone in the mood for something playful and lighthearted. It can easily be read in one sitting.

But her experience there helps her gain the wisdom she needs to help her make her own life altering decision.

Not a typical happily-ever-after romance.

Donna woke up after too much wine, in the wrong hotel room next to Ross (first name or last she wasn’t quite sure). While celebrating her divorce with a weekend in Vegas, hooking up with a stranger wasn’t what she’d had in mind. Getting married had been the last thing she’d been thinking of – but the ring on her finger and vague memories of walking down the aisle weren’t something she could ignore. Ross is a sweet man, but when Donna’s ex – Mark – starts calling her things begin to get quite complicated.

This is a well written short story, but quite different from what I was expecting. There isn’t a traditional Happily Ever After, which surprised me when I got to the twist near the end. Readers who don’t mind a more non-traditional ending might find this refreshing, but those who expect their hero and heroine to walk into the sunset happily together might be disappointed or upset. I think the author definitely deserves kudos for taking a risk – regardless of the type of ending one desires. What seems a fairly simple plot is also delightfully complicated. In a very short space the author manages to catch us up on Donna’s life, introduce us to Ross and I found myself really invested in the situation Donna found herself in. This isn’t your standard Vegas story, even if the trappings and summary might make it sound so.

For readers who are interested in a different take on a getting-drunk-and-married Vegas story, this might be a breath of fresh air. With characters I found I could relate to and a truly surprising twist at the end, this short story packs quite a punch.

Great snappy dialog, sex scenes that curl your toes and a fast character driven plot that made you care about the characters even when they were at their worst. Awesome read!

Miranda Baker is going on my must read list. She writes with passion and I felt like I was right there, in the dungeon getting a spanking myself. *sigh*. Top marks for diving head on into the tough double standard of Hollywood-the scandals and the hype. It was totally hot and spicy and I am ready to read the next f/f book by this author. Being rescued by three sexy lumberjacks is fine as a fantasy, but in reality the biggest of the bears is awfully cranky and seems ready to gobble Frankie right up.

Marcus Gardner wasn’t always a lumberjack—once a high-powered Minneapolis lawyer, he’s come home to Logan to lick his wounds, not play with a sassy city twink who might as well have stepped directly out of his past. But as the northwinds blow and guards come down, Frankie and Marcus find they have a lot more in common than they don’t. Frankie Blackburn hates small towns, they’re scary places for a gay man who some call too feminine. Marcus Gardner looks like one of those reasons that a small town is so scary for Frankie.

He’s surprised to learn that Marcus and his friends are actually gay and yet still very very manly. This story relies on the forced proximity of being trapped in a cabin, add in Marcus’s friends who are hooking up around them left and right, and the sexual tension is really high. They both really don’t want the blizzard to end because that means the end of their time together.

It’s an enjoyable story and I enjoyed Marcus’ grumpy side. He’s a great character because he isn’t sure if he’s ready to be in another relationship, he’s willing to give Frankie a chance, to really give a relationship a shot.

This was my first time reading a story by Ms. Cullinan, but I will probably give her another try. She does a good job of investing me in the characters and their lives. I really liked the small town of Logan, Minnesota and the way she crafted all the characters and described the town.
