One woman, two lovers. Double the pleasure, or double the trouble?

Rule of Three, Book 2

Former goodie-two-shoes Kassidy now has three pairs of shoes under her bed—hers, Chris’s and Dag’s. While she relishes the hot threesome that makes her friends jealous, she can’t deny things are…complicated. Namely, whom to tell about their unconventional relationship, and whom to keep in the dark.

In the dark category? Definitely Chris’s parents, which should be simple, since they live far away. Except they’ve sprung a surprise for their son’s thirtieth birthday. They’re coming for a visit. Then there’s Kassidy’s best friend Danielle, who’s home from Europe, clueless to recent events, and flirting with Dag like crazy.

Awkward!

Family, friends, coworkers and a wedding put three lovers’ best intentions to the test, making them wonder if this unique brand of love has a chance in hell of working out.

Day one after the honeymoon period ends. Actually, Rhythm of Three begins the day after Chris, Kassidy and Dag have decided they can’t live without one another. They thought they had some rough roads to hoe getting to that point, now they have a new monumental hurdle, telling their families and friends.

I first fell in love with these three in Rule of Three. The unlikely chance that Chris and Kass would welcome Dag into their relationship becomes a reality and I, like many other readers, didn’t want their story to end. Ms. Jamieson listened to her readers and gave us the rest of their story. So full of tension and oh, so very hot!

I think what I liked most about this book is how it showed the triad dealing with real life situations with honest emotions. The thought of telling their parents is stressful, not telling their friends and dealing with fallout and watching Chris, especially, work through this new side of himself, it all brought realistic tension into the story. There was no option to stop reading. The love between them is so vividly painted by the author; I was completely vested in their HEA. These three people had made a very adult and consensual decision and there were consequences. I like that Ms. Jamieson didn’t sugarcoat that fact or ignore it. She dealt with it.

This story works fine as a stand-alone for readers who don’t mind jumping into the middle of a relationship but I would highly suggest reading Rule of Three first to fully appreciate how this relationship came to be. This story gives closure to Chris, Kass and Dag’s story in a way that left me knowing that through the happy times and bad these three would work it out and live happily ever after. That’s a good ending.

Turnabout is fair play. Or maybe karma is a bitch is more fitting.
Wanting to repay the favor she did for them, Petra’s friends throw her a key party to help her move on from a months-old heartbreak. While she is not interested in falling in love again, getting her stunted sex life back on track doesn’t sound like a bad idea.

Except someone sabotages the key drawing before she gets her turn. Instead of spending the night with the ultra-hot doc her friends intended to “accidentally” set her up with, she winds up drawing her good friend Alex’s keys instead.

A night with Alex is coveted among players. Petra quickly finds out the reality of Alex far exceeds his legendary reputation. The moment they kiss they discover a chemistry so combustible it’s positively nuclear. Instantly engulfed in a red-hot haze of passion, neither of them sees it coming when Petra’s ex returns, repentant and threatening to ruin their newfound happiness.

The matchmaker gets the tables turned on her and wins the top prize, a forever kind of love.

The premise of two people who are at first friends and then realize that there’s more than friendship going on is an easy win for me. I can relate and the author does a lovely job of creating a plausible scenario for this short story. Petra and Alex work together. They’re part of a group of close friends who hang out and support each other…and throw 70s style key parties. That was a neat twist.

I won’t go into detail to explain a key party but the end result, while not what Petra’s friends planned, was Alex finally be presented with the opportunity to show Petra how he felt about her. It was sweet really. I think I may have missed something though. I’m not sure exactly how Alex managed to out thwart the matchmakers to get him paired with Petra. I don’t have a problem with reading this one again to find out.

Alex seems like such a nice guy and circumstances had always left him as ‘the boyfriend in waiting’. I was curious to see how Ms. Kingston would handle the morning after. Are they both happy? Is Petra sorry it happened? Is there much awkwardness, especially after ‘the incident’? That was interesting and a total first for me in an erotic romance.

I had no problem cheering for Petra and Alex but when Jude comes back onto the scene I had some mixed emotions. I liked Jude, too, and it was obvious that he and Petra had some serious feelings at one time. For that matter there was an episode with Alex and Jude that could have made it very easy for this to end in a ménage. I had hope when Alex thinks about the night they shared and realizes that he was able to let go and be a different person with Jude, he could be rougher and do things that he couldn’t do with a woman. My interest was truly piqued at that point. I had to see how it would all be resolved.

Ms. Kingston gives satisfying closure to all parties involved. The writing flows well even when the story moves swiftly along the timeline. I would have liked to have seen Alex and Petra at work together along with another character who plays an intricate part of this story, Dr. Michael. He sounded very interesting and doesn’t get nearly enough face time. Oh well, this is a series so maybe he gets his own HEA in a future book. The setup is certainly there to pair him off.

This is a quick read and I truly liked it well enough that I’m adding the first two books of the series to my TBR list. The writing style, character development and dialogue all appeal to me. This story isn’t long or drawn out, it’s perfect for readers who want all the romance and heat without packing on the background details.

Charlotte Stein’s work is always hot. I mean, burn your fingers as you read hot. Telling Tales is no exception. The writing is, for the most part, tight – there are a few hiccups and places I had to reread, but nothing big.

From an erotic point of view, this is a great book. There’s a lot of sex. A lot of sex. Experimentation and giving in to desire abounded on every page. If you want hot, then this is the book.

I tend to want a little more plot with my erotic elements and this book seemed a bit lacking. I never really got to know the characters or what drove them. All the time in bed trumped character development. I wanted to know more about Cameron’s submissive side or how they got to the ending I completely didn’t see coming. I like rich descriptions and I didn’t seem to get them.

Still, I enjoyed Telling Tales. It’s rich with eroticism and sexual adventure. Yes, Telling Tales is a good book. There is a boatload of heat. If you want a book that’s heavy on the sex and the escapism, then this might be the book for you.

In Samurai and Other Stories you’ll find numerous ghosts, many Scotsmen, a big blob, some holy relics, some unholy relics, a Mothman, a barbarian, some swordplay, a shoggoth and people that nobody expects.

This collection by William Meikle brings together stories from the past decade in an exploration of the perils of exploring dark places, both external and internal.

Should everything that goes bump in the night be investigated? It’s much easier to ask this question in the middle of the afternoon than when you hear something bizarre in the inky darkness and know dawn is many hours away.

“The Yule Log” opens with John selecting the perfect log to burn in his fireplace. This isn’t any ordinary kindling, though, and I was mesmerized by what he decides to carve into it first and why he chose that particular motif. It was also interesting to see how John’s emotional state is communicated to the reader in a piece that includes almost no dialogue. This is a good Christmas story for readers who ordinarily find that genre too sentimental.

In “Inquisitor,” Father Fernando has been given the responsibility of interrogating a strange creature that has just sailed in from the New World. He steps into this role with only a handful of diary entries from the last man who encountered the creature to guide him. The concept is well thought out, but I would have liked to see more time spent on the climax of Father Fernando’s investigation. Certain aspects of the plot would have been much more frightening had they been given more time to develop before the end. There were several other tales in this book that followed a similar pattern. Each one starts off with an intriguing question or scenario, but much more time is spent hinting at what is actually going on than wrapping up the plot threads.

By far my favourite story in this collection is “The Haunting of Esther Cox.” Upon first glance Esther is no different than any other young woman living in a rural community in the late 1880s. She has an impeccable reputation and is surrounded by adoring family members. Yet she’s also carrying a terrible secret that threatens to destroy everything good in her life. Each diary entry provides another clue about what is really happening. In this case that particular writing style works extremely well because of how slowly certain facts wiggle to the surface of her mind. The descriptions of the strict social mores of her culture add an extra layer of horror to this tale, and the creative ways in which Esther responds to everything her community expects of someone her age and gender makes this a must-read.

This was my first introduction to Mr. Meikle’s work. If it is any indication of his writing style, I can’t wait to read more from him. He has a highly imaginative mind whose tendency to find the dark twist in even the most mundane circumstances is well-suited for both the horror and science fiction genres.

Samurai and Other Stories is a truly original collection of horror tales that are especially appropriate for longterm fans of this genre. It is as unique as it is deeply creepy, and I look forward to starting the whole thing over from the beginning.

Maliyah Aziz has no time for men. Employed by the U.S. Government overseas, the self-described workaholic refuses to let a relationship derail her flourishing career. But when her estranged father passes away abruptly, she must re-examine her priorities and return to Cairo, a place plagued with bittersweet memories of her childhood.

For eight hundred years, vampire Ramses Shakir maintained a low profile, making a living along the trade routes of the Nile River. Although not until he forms a partnership with a human by the name of Anwar al Aziz, does he truly make his mark on society. Together the two men amass a fortune and forge an unbreakable bond. Suspicious of Anwar’s sudden death, the vampire turns to his best friend’s daughter in search of answers.

As they scour all of Egypt for clues, the last thing Ramses and Maliyah expect to find is love.

Lies, deceit, greed, and love…those are the driving emotions between the pages of Annalynne Russo’s Blood of the Nile.

Maliyah had not seen her cousins in about twenty years, but it’s a bitter homecoming. After her father’s recent passing, she returns to Egypt to settle his affairs and has no plans of staying more than a few days. Despite the lost time and distance between them though, Salma and Husani offer some much needed affection and support during an understandably difficult time, and Maliyah finds the calling of her heritage too much to deny. Although Maliyah loved her father very much, her parents’ divorce had created a gap in their previously close-knit bond. However, guilt over lost time and missed opportunity would have to wait. It appears as though the otherwise healthy business guru, Anwar al Aziz, may not have died so innocently after all. Before she knows it, Maliyah finds herself face to face with a few men from her past—one who wants to kill her and one who wants to seduce her—and thrust into a life and death search for answers to her father’s premature death.

Maliyah is not the only one wanting answers. Ramses Shakir—long time business partner and even longer time friend—doesn’t think Anwar’s passing is merely unfortunate luck. His friend had always been a picture of health and he did not believe for one minute that he’d dropped dead from a heart attack. While he certainly planned to discover the truth behind Anwar’s demise, he hadn’t counted on his friend’s daughter to show up and throw his world and his plans into a tailspin. Even when Maliyah was young, Ramses sensed an undeniable attraction between them. A mere girl at the time of her parents’ divorce, Maliyah stayed with her mother in America, placing her far away from him and his deep-rooted desires. Now here she was all grown up, and Ramses quickly realizes that the quiet yearning he felt before would soon turn into an overpowering hunger for not only Maliyah’s blood, but her heart and soul as well.

Blood of the Nile offers its readers a unique look at Egyptian culture. The author takes great care to incorporate some major differences in how women are treated and viewed there when compared to other places, like America. If anything, this really gave life to Maliyah and Ramses and made their characters all the more believable. While the underlying issue of family greed after the death of a rich relative is certainly nothing new or surprising, the persons behind it all was quite a shock.

The story moves along fairly well with adequate pacing and plot points. Probably the most deterring things for me, however, were the multiple point of view violations and a few details that just didn’t jive or were not even physically possible. During the showdown between Maliyah and her father’s killers, the main perpetrator performs a couple of actions that are physically impossible to pull off given his placement and the position of his victim. During the midst of this, Husani claims to have a shotgun holstered to his leg. Now I don’t know a lot about guns, but shotguns are pretty darned long. Seems that would be a bit uncomfortable whilst sitting in the back of a vehicle, and probably impossible to whip out quickly unless he takes off his pants first. As with any story, a little bit of editing would likely fix these shortcomings.

Overall, this was an enjoyable enough read that kept me entertained and curious as to what happened next. Maliyah is a take-charge kind of girl thrust into a culture not accustomed to strong women. Ramses is a vampire used to getting his way by coercion or compulsion, and an Egyptian man not used to dealing with a firecracker like Maliyah. Put the two together and you’re bound to have an explosive and exciting read packed with some amusing bang.

One crazy condition in order to inherit a fortune – would you marry for money?

I like books that have conventions and traditions that are being thrown out the window. Clare is supposed to marry in order to inherit a fortune. Where others might balk, she agrees. Jamie is the man in question and he also agrees–but he’s got ulterior motives.

As much as I liked this book, I wasn’t keen on some of Jamie’s motives. He wants to fix his house. He wants her to become someone she’s not. I get the conventions of the times. A woman should obey her husband. She should be submissive to him and agree to what he wants. I also get that the influx of women being stronger and more forthright is a bit of a modern convention. But as much as Clare isn’t a conventional woman, she does succumb to a conventional means to find a husband. I guess I expected more from her and Jamie.

That said, these two characters are quite well matched. Jamie might have had other plans, but I liked how Clare did come into her own. The heat between them is palpable once they sorted out what they each wanted and I enjoyed reading it.

If you want a solid historical, then The Bride Insists might be what you’re looking for.

How can a hunting trip go terribly wrong?

Evie loves to hunt, and she’s a better shot than any man. Scott is fun-loving and sexy–the perfect companion. But what starts out as a wonderful date turns deadly when they witness a terrible crime and must flee for their lives.

Evie and Scott begin their day laughing and teasing, but car trouble and a freak blizzard force them to seek refuge in a deserted farmhouse. Once they get a fire started, the farmhouse seems like the perfect–and perfectly romantic–place to wait for help. Until three strangers arrive carrying assault weapons.

Sometimes thinking on your feet is the only option.

Evie and Scott have great chemistry. They clearly are in a new relationship, but their strong friendship makes me think they will continue to make a good match even after they’ve settled into a routine. The best scenes in this story focus on how attached they’ve become to one another.

It was difficult for me to understand why they were so underprepared for their excursion. Most hunting trips are straightforward, of course. Travelling to an extremely remote area where communication with the outside world is spotty at best requires a level of safety and first aid preparation that these characters seem to have overlooked.

Scott is clearly a very smart guy. This fuzzy thinking on his part doesn’t match up with how he responds to the crime they witness on their trip. People make mistakes, though, and how he reacts in the heat of the moment is well worth reading. I enjoyed seeing him in action, and I can understand why Evie is so attracted to him.

I would have liked to see Evie’s personality fleshed out. While it’s completely understandable that someone who doesn’t have any real experience in this kind of environment will make mistakes, certain decisions of hers defy common sense. It was difficult for me to sympathize with Evie at times because how mismatched her reactions are to her surroundings.

The setting is perfect for this tale. It’s much easier to get injured or killed in a desert than it would be in a less volatile climate. These dangers added a level of suspense to the plot that made it hard for me to stop reading until I’d reached the conclusion.

One Stormy Night is a solid blend of romance and mystery. It’s a good choice for anyone in the mood for a short, satisfying read.

A feisty heroine, two guys and one ex-wife /ex-girlfriend —  that can all be very complicated and interesting at the same time. He Loves Me, He Loves Me Not had all of that and it sounded like a promising story.

It started good and intriguing, the heroine and hero meet but they did not get on well at first. But as the story progressed it seemed that the emphasis was put more on the heroine’s relationship with her ex fiancé and her father, while the relationship with the hero was happening in the background. Because of that, the whole romance seemed a bit rushed.

On the other hand when the relationship between the hero and heroine was the main focus, they spent their time in an “I love to hate you” trope. That became a bit repetitive after a while because I really couldn’t figure out why the heroine disliked and mistrusted the hero so much.

The story did not leave me indifferent though.  On the contrary and regardless of the issues that caught my attention, there was something in the story that had me enjoying it. For example, although I did not always understand the heroine’s actions I cheered for her and I was happy when she made right choices and when she saw through the villain’s schemes. I was happy that the hero found the way to the heroine’s heart and that all ended well.

Although He Loves Me, He Loves Me Not  was a bit predictable, I enjoyed it. The story flowed nicely, it had a good plot and a satisfying ending that matched the character’s personalities. I had fun reading it. Because I did find enjoyment, for me, that was enough to recommend it to those readers who reach for contemporary romances.

Ms. Beck knows how to pack quite a bit of action into a short period of time, and while I was able to anticipate many of the plot twists in advance I really enjoyed seeing how certain surprises were so tightly woven into what was already occurring.

This is a heavily plot-based novel and the consequences of that focus show up as the story progresses. It was a little difficult for me to get to know these characters as individuals because so much time was spent focusing on solving the mystery. I would have liked to spend a few more scenes exploring their personalities before all of the strange things that occur at the Ripley Inn start disrupting their lives.

I also some trouble determining when this story is supposed to be set. Due to lack of cell phones, computers, or other portable electronic devices I originally assume it happened before the late 1980s or early 1990s. The true time period is eventually revealed, but I still have questions about certain clues that showed up early on in this piece. What I learned was intriguing, and I would have really liked to see a more thorough exploration of this topic.

Slowly decaying buildings can’t help but to be a little gloomy. The descriptions of what it feels like to visit what was once a popular and well-maintained hotel add a subtle sense of dread to this story. Nowhere is this more true than in the opening scene of this tale, and I can’t imagine a more satisfying way to introduce the reader to this particular group of characters.

Midnight At Ripley Inn kept me on my toes. This is a good choice for anyone in the mood for a truly scary mystery.
