Two dark tales of fear, paranoia, and good intentions, set in situations where grey bleeds into black, and where there are no easy answers. Kit Power invites you to see the world through the eyes of the faces that pass you every day. Discover how it feels to really know someone.

Some decisions are easier to make than others. The trick is to figure out ahead of time exactly how far you’re willing to go to reach your goals.

This was my first introduction to this author’s work and it has whet my appetite for more. Mr. Power did quite well at introducing this reader to his characters through a series of subtle hints about their personalities that are sprinkled throughout fast-paced plots.

“The Loving Husband and the Faithful Wife” has a strong, intriguing premise, but I had trouble piecing together some of the clues the narrator provides about what is happening. A few of them seem to be mutually contradictory, and I would have preferred to see more time explaining how all of them fit together. I don’t know if the author intends to write a sequel to this tale, but I would be quite interested in reading one if it is ever published. There is still so much these characters haven’t revealed about themselves yet.

It took a few paragraphs for me to adjust to the Cockney dialect and nearly-constant swearing in “The Debt,” but Del’s predicament snagged my attention right away. At times it was a little difficult to believe he had grown up in such a rough neighbourhood due to how he reacts to certain things that are common in that sort of environment. Having an explanation for how this occurred would have resulted in a higher rating for this book. The pacing is strong, though, and Del’s journey is so compelling that I didn’t want to stop reading.

The Loving Husband and the Faithful Wife is a promising collection. I look forward to seeing what Mr. Power writes next, and I’d recommend these stories to anyone who is new to the mystery genre. Either tale is a good place to start.

A very handsome but shy man yearns to have a one-night stand with a sexy woman. One day he decided to step out of his comfort zone and gained enough courage to ask a girl out.

This is an interesting short story, told in the first person from the male protagonist’s point of view. I enjoyed how it was somewhat like one of those “tell a secret” confession letters, but still rich in detail and descriptions. There’s quite a bit of internal discussion – as one would expect from a first-person tale – and I was pleased that for a change we got to see and experience everything from the man’s point of view. It was different to how a woman would have told the story, and I found this made the story fresh and quite interesting.

I found the dialogue a little stilted, almost oddly formal in places considering it was a sexual experience – for example “At last, your courage has fused with your admirable circumspection”. I wondered if this was written on purpose – to add to the air of an old film, or perhaps the unreality of a fantasy come to life. The slight off-beat language jarred me now and then, but wasn’t strong enough to make me want to stop reading, and certainly didn’t dampen my curiosity about how it would all end up.

I was also a little surprised at the dichotomy of the protagonist. In his opening sentence he declares “Yes, I’m a narcissist and proud of it”, yet he’s too shy to ask a woman out for a date. He’s spent months exercising and buffing his body up to perfection, but can’t gather the courage to ask a still-life model out for dinner and a date. While this paradox confused me, it also intrigued me. I’ll admit to still being a little confused even by the ending, but as this was his first experience and he later explains further about his shyness, I came away with the feeling that the protagonist was a lot more complicated than we could get to understand in the briefness of the story.

This was a very different style of story and probably won’t be everyone’s cup of tea. Still I have to admit I really enjoyed it. I liked the different perspective, the feel of a romantic confession and the fact it was unlike practically every other story I’ve read. It’s fresh and different and that alone made it well worth the read. There is one very tastefully written sex scene, quite graphic but nothing I found remotely offensive. I think readers interested in a take on a man’s sexual experience and fantasy, or those who enjoy “confessions of” style tales should find this quite enjoyable.

Rock legend Samuel Gibson has worn all these labels-and he’s in no hurry to drop them. Until he meets Lily Pearce, whose brother would be the perfect new singer for the band. There’s an allure beneath Lily’s prickly demeanor that makes Samuel wonder if it’s time to correct some of the misconceptions trailing behind him like a mile of bad microphone cord.

After watching her brother get chewed up and spit out, Lily has no love for the hedonistic world of rock ‘n’ roll, or anyone in it. Yet her own body betrays her with an instantly sizzling sexual attraction to the very symbol of everything she hates about that lifestyle-Samuel Gibson.

Things heat up and Lily’s heart is on the line once she starts to catch glimpses of the man beneath the reputation. But can she reconcile her feeling for Samuel with everything she knows his world to be?

Lily Pearce hates rock music and anything to do with the business of rock music. After watching as her brother slowly deteriorated from the excesses the rock life offered, she is happy to see him safely in rehab…again. When he gets an offer to try out for the possibility of replacing Nick Blackthorne, she is torn. She has never seen Eugene more determined to stay straight and succeed at the audition, but she is still worried that he won’t be able to handle the pressure and temptations of the life he wants so badly. When Samuel Gibson shows up at the rehab center to talk to Eugene, Lily is determined to stay away, but that becomes impossible when Eugene offers his sister as tour guide for Samuel’s entire visit. Lily is sure she will hate every minute, but as she begins to see the man behind the image, she begins to lose her heart to Samuel, and Samuel does what he can to show her he isn’t the debauched cretin the tabloids make him out to be, at least not anymore. Can Lily learn to accept the passion Samuel offers, and not hold his career against him? Can Samuel convince Lily of his true intentions? Can these two help Lily’s brother or will Lily’s ideas stop the romance before it even plays its first few notes?

Lead Me On is the latest in Lexxie Couper’s Heart of Fame series. This is a hot and imaginative look inside of a rock band looking for a front man to give them a new voice. I like this world Ms. Couper has built. The characters are well defined and likable, people you could meet and be friends with. I always enjoy a peek into a world I can only imagine, and Ms. Couper does it with style and lots of heat.

Samuel ‘Sam’ Gibson is the epitome of the rock and roll bad boy; handsome, sexy and just a bit wild. But that is the person the world sees, and there is another, more private side to him, a side that envies his friends as they find that one special person to connect with. When Samuel meets Lily Pearce, he is determined to show her that there is more to him than what the tabloids portray, and it is fun to watch as he tries, sometimes unsuccessfully, to breach her walls and reach her heart. I liked that, for every positive move, there was a chance that something would tip the scales in the opposite direction, and I enjoyed watching Samuel pull out all the stops trying to win Lily over.

Lily Pearce is smart, sassy and independent, and is determined to stay away from anything to do with the world of rock and roll. She is fiercely loyal and very protective of her brother, and can’t see that, at least in part, he is to blame for his downfall. She wants to see her brother healthy and whole, but also wants him to be happy. She doesn’t want to ruin his shot at his dream, but fears that the temptation could be too much for him. She is determined to hate Samuel and everything she thinks he stands for, but as she spends time with him, she begins to realize that not everything is as she has thought it to be. I enjoyed watching as Lily begins to let go of her preconceived ideas and learns to look for the inner person with Samuel and not just assume the worst of him.

There are some sweet and charming scenes in this, and the passion Ms Couper infuses goes form gentle and loving to scorching hot as these two circle each other. There are challenges for each to overcome, and I like that they do it with humor as well as passion, and I was happy to see Samuel admit his faults, even as he tried to show Lily that he really is almost like any normal, but hot, guy. There are highs and lows for this couple, and places where I wanted to kick one or the other for poor choices, but I like the way Ms. Couper brought them to their happy ending without making it sugary sweet, and leaving the edge in the relationship. This is for those who like romance and those ever rocking bad boys with a heart of gold.

Ms. Snow presents and interesting relationship in the form of a threesome with Dietrich Moore and Stellan Alfonso who are already in love. They both want Blythe Winters and will do anything to convince her that she needs them too.

Yeah, Dietrich is a rich billionaire and Stellan is also a rich businessman, so once we get past that suspension of disbelief, the story works really well. Both Stellan and Dietrich enjoy women, and Stellan enjoys being a Dom to a woman while still submitting to Dietrich. I found the story very sexy, Ms. Snow writes a very steamy love scene, and isn’t shy about all three of them enjoying themselves.

There is a lot of sex in this story so it definitely lives up the name erotic romance, but there is also a lot of story and a lot of time is spent building up a relationship however platonic between Dietrich and Blythe. They both learn a lot about each other.

I will say this story starts off with a bang right from the start, and I stayed enthralled until the very end. In the end I was very satisfied with the story and it was a good way to while away an evening.

Book Two of the Shirley Combs and Dr. Mary Watson series, THE ILLUSTRIOUS CLIENT, shows us the private investigator and her sidekick sharing an office, and introduces their receptionist, Lix. This is the second book of the Shirley Combs/Dr. Mary Watson mystery series. If you are a lover of Sherlock Holmes, this is a fun look at what might happen had the characters been women and in the present day.

The books’ titles are taken from Sherlock Holmes’ own stories and this book is loosely based on the one of the same title. However, this is not just a retelling of the Holmes stories. Ms. de Helen definitely makes it her own.

The clues and red herrings as the pair solve the mystery are well placed. The plot was strong and interesting, and like a really good mystery, I couldn’t figure out “whodunnit” and was surprised by the reveal at the end.

It was hard for me to get a fix on Mary, even though the story is written in first person POV. Normally that makes it easier for me to become one with the main character, but in this case I didn’t connect quite as well with her as I would have liked. I’m planning to get the first book of the series— maybe that will help me get to know her better. I also though there were a few too many references about Mary’s smart phone and smart car.

Even with that, though, this was an enjoyable book and I finished it in one sitting. It’s a fresh and unique take on Sherlock Holmes, and I’m looking forward to more of the series.

Author Prown is a journalist, magazine editor and plays a guitar. He must have heard this magical story in the music rising from his fingers. This is a very good fantasy with enjoyable characters. The story moves fluently. There is humor, greed, spite, and a bit of hatred as well as love in the story.

Mr. Dorro is the village bookmaster and he has helped solve a case or two before, so he takes an interest in the current murder. He has just acquired an apprentice named Wyll and he’s prepared to do a complete investigation. He doesn’t think an elf put that knife in Bing’s back; why leave it there if it was?

There’s lots of action. Wyll ends up in jail twice, Mr. Dorro meets the elves and finds they are reasonable people even if they want their jewel back. The sheriff almost dies trying to protect the village and find a killer. The Mayor is corrupt. I didn’t know for sure who was behind the killing until the author explained it.

This is a well-written busy book that will hold your attention and make you wish you were there to meet the elves and maybe share a mug of cider with the villagers. It’s written for young teens but this older reader enjoyed it a lot, too. It’s going in my personal library. I’d be happy to read another adventure with Mr. Dorro. He’s a good detective!

All age readers will enjoy the ideas about friendship, loyalty, and a sense of the ridiculous; and likely share a great desire to try out the famous dim sum recipes, too. Although this story is meant for Middle school readers – this adult reader was completely entertained from start to finish.

Friends for life…but could they have even more?

After years away, Jason is back in town, looking after his parents’ house for the summer. But Robbie’s all grown up now, and suddenly uncomfortable with spilling all of her secrets to her handsome neighbor.

The cute boy next door has become a stranger…and a disturbingly sexy one at that. But can they forge a new relationship to replace the old?

If you’re feeling nostalgic for the eighties‒big hair, leg warmers, acid-washed jeans and all‒and you like friends-to-lovers stories, then Waking Up, a Retro Romance from 1986, might be just what you’re looking for.

The story begins with the heroine, Robbie, defending her lack of direction in life. She’s twenty-two years old, never went to college, and works as a waitress. Her childhood friend Jason, a successful businessman who has recently moved back home, is prodding her to do something with her life, but Robbie says she has to do things in her own time. That beginning really resonated with me. I remember being a directionless twenty-something and how difficult that was, and I was looking forward to Robbie’s journey of self-discovery. Unfortunately, rather than chronicling that journey, the story moves from one commonplace scene to the next as Robbie slowly realizes that Jason is no longer just her pal next door. The romance is the point of the story, of course, but it is played out against a backdrop of Robbie’s evening shifts at the restaurant, her housecleaning chores in the home she shares with her father, and lazy afternoons spent working on her tan. Not much scope for interesting character growth there.

Equally problematic for me, is that Jason is more old-school hero than I am comfortable with. He’s sometimes violent toward Robbie, shaking and shoving her more than once: “He held her by the shoulders and shook her steadfastly until she shouted in outrage.” He’s also a borderline stalker who stands outside her window at night and stares into her bedroom. And when she asks him to back off his aggressive sexual pursuit of her, he refuses to admit the fault and instead turns it on her: “No. The conflict is all within yourself. You can’t place the blame on me for what you’re feeling.” For the most part, the author portrays Jason as a gentle, caring man who truly loves Robbie, but occasionally I thought his behavior crossed a line no hero should cross in any era.

Overall, though, the story is well-written and a quick read, but I would have liked it much better if Jason had been less menacing and if the novel had been as much about Robbie’s personal journey as her romantic one. But if you like your retro heroes with a touch of machismo, and this frozen winter has you longing for a story that brings hot-shouldered summer to life, Waking Up might just be the book for you.

This is a fun and sexy short story, full of chemistry between Jenni and Rick and plenty of funny but sweet mishaps.  I had a lot of fun reading their antics. I was immensely relieved when Jenni didn’t just fall immediately all over Rick. Even though they both make clear from the outset they’re interested in one another, the author didn’t rush their coming together. As readers we’re given a bit of time to know Jenni and Rick and we can watch them interact – that sensual to-and-fro of two lovers coming together – before the main event. I found this helped with the pacing, letting it progress with a natural feel, but also not leaving us feeling shorted by a too-quick wrap up at the end. The plot of the sexy neighbor helping with a bit of home renovations wasn’t too new or fresh, but my interest in the characters and the good pacing helped me still want to know what happened next and turn the pages.

I found this to be a well written short story, with interesting characters and some smoking hot sex. Raunchy enough to need a glass of cold water nearby, but not so shocking that you couldn’t share it with your best friend, this is a good blend of naughty and nice and perfect for a quick, happy read.

Diego is on her hit list, but she’s so hooked on his delicious kink, she can’t untangle herself from the irresistible bad-boy.

Baby, it’s cold outside but if you’re ready to suspend disbelief have I got one hot story to drive the cold away.

Britt isn’t exactly innocent but she’s certainly never been attracted to the blue collar, biker type, until she literally runs into Tampa biker bad boy Diego Mansini. There’s just something about the way he carries himself, the way he talks to her and that ‘he’s no good girl’ look he lays on her that has her agreeing to a first date with only mild hesitation. Who can truly resist a scoundrel? This is where the suspending disbelief comes into play. He screams bad news and she (seems reasonably intelligent) goes places and does things that don’t quite go along with her character. But maybe this is the real Britt, the girl who wants to experience a trip on the wild side. I can imagine it would be difficult to turn down a hot inked alpha male, so maybe it isn’t a completely unbelievable scenario.

Diego Mansisi is in lust with Britt at first sight. He sees what she hasn’t had the courage to act on until he opens a whole new world to her. Britt is beautifully submissive and he’s just the Dom to allow her to find the strength to give over control. In return, she makes him want to be a better person. He knows he’s not what she needs but he wants to be what she can’t live without. There’s a problem though, he’s keeping a secret that has all the potential to destroy their new found attraction.

Also, there was obviously something about Britt’s friend Lexi that kept me reading to see what her deal was. Is she a true friend, concerned that Britt is making a mistake, or is there something else going on? Little hints along the way kept me intrigued.

Readers who want their books filled with tension and seriously hot sex are going to eat this one up. The author has some very descriptive language that didn’t always work for me but it didn’t keep me from enjoying the overall story. There’s a back story for Diego that only comes out towards the end and it’s pretty heart wrenching. The title leaves little doubt that this novella has lots and lots of kink. There isn’t much these two don’t try. If it’s a sexy no holds barred kink fest with a tumultuous love story that you’re looking for, check out Pretty in Kink.
