Owner of one of the most successful brothels in London, Madame Marie Marchander has seen and done it all. Jaded by the hand life dealt her, she gave up on love the night her virginity was auctioned off twenty years earlier. But then the boy, now a man, she once loved walks in to her establishment.

Jonathan Pierce, Baron Heartfield, had waited too long to save the woman he loved. A man no longer bound by the vows taken as a boy nor under the influence of his father, he is determined to woo and win the heart of the only woman he ever loved. The fact she was forced in to prostitution is of little consequence beyond the guilt he bears for not interceding with her father.

Steadfast in his love, he launches an assault on her heart with all the strategy his years in the military afford him. His only goal, to reclaim her love.

The Market in Amsterdam has long been known for its erotic entertainment, which is the perfect setting for this sultry story.

Jonathan and Marie’s relationship is certainly explosive. These two seem to have a passion for one another that oozes out into everything they do, whether it be argue with one another, seduce each other, or make love. Even in the very beginning I knew they were meant to be together and that everything else could be worked out. This also made me root for Jonathan because I knew he would do anything to finally get the woman he loved and he did not disappoint.

One thing I would have liked to know more about was the past, both between the two characters as well as separately. The author gives clues to what happened between them, but I think the whole story would have added a bit more interest for me as well as sympathy. This is especially true because at times I found Marie holding her emotions at bay a bit too much. A better understanding of her past would have helped me understand why she seemed to need such control in her life.

The sex play in this story was plentiful and exciting. I found both Marie and Jonathan’s ability to accept one another truly displayed in the bedroom. Especially for Jonathan and his ability to take whatever Marie can dish out, no matter if she is in control in the bed or if it were he himself. I found either situation endearing and erotic. These scenes truly made the story, and made me want to know what would be utilized in the bedroom next. So anyone who is looking for an erotic tale with a variety of sex play will enjoy this story.

INTERVIEW and Giveaway: DAKOTA MADISON

Long and Short Reviews welcomes Dakota Madison, who is with us today promoting her newest release Fire on Ice. Leave a comment for a chance to win a digital copy of her other new release After Alex Died.

As Dakota Madison, she’s written seven books, also writing fiction and non-fiction books under her legal name. Her pen name came from the names of her beautiful bloodhouns,  Dakota and Madison.

“I feel like picking a favorite book is like picking a favorite child (although I have to admit I don’t have children). In my case, maybe it’s like picking a favorite bloodhound, nearly impossible. With that said, I think I have the greatest emotional connection to BE GOOD and AFTER ALEX DIED,” she said.

Even though Fire on Ice is about a hocky player, Dakota doesn’t really know that much about hocky. However, her husband was born and raised in Canada and is a hocky fanatic, so he helped her with parts of the book. She also had a beta reader who was a huge hockey fan.

“I hope with the help of my husband and my beta reader, the story feels authentic. Of course, it’s a romance novel, so it’s about love not hockey but I still thought it was important to be as true to the sport as was necessary.”

Dakota participated in National Novel Writing Month last November and, since then, has written a novel a month. She’s currently writing the third book in her Matchplay series, called Final Play, and she’s also working on the second book in the Fire on Ice series called The Playmaker.

She works full-time as a university professor, so it’s difficult to find the time to write everything she would like to write. She gets up around 4:30 every morning and writes for several hours before she has to get ready for work.

“When I have time, I also write at night. I like to write for a few hours more on the weekends, although I have to admit to often participating in writing binges many weekends!” she told me. “I have so many ideas floating around in my head with only a limited amount of free time to write all of them. I often wonder what my productivity would be like if I wrote full time.”

Dakota learned to read when she was four years old, and she fell in love with books.  As a child, when people asked her what she wanted to do when she grew up, she always told them she wanted to be a writer.

“What advice would you give a new writer just starting out?”  I asked.

“I think it’s every important to establish a writing habit and to write every day, even if it’s just a few paragraphs. Always finish what you start. Don’t ever leave a project half completed. I would also recommend completing a project before you start editing it because the creative process and the editing process are completely different. If you’re being judgmental of the work too early, it could stifle the creative process.”

Dakota writes until her goal for the day is met–even if the writing’s not good.

“I think it’s important to write, even if it’s not good. I give myself permission to write poorly because I know it can always be fixed later. It’s just important to get words on the page during the creative process,” she explained.

Writing is good, to Dakota, if she becomes emotionally involved with the characters and they feel real to her.  And, her all-time favorite character is Lisabeth Salander from the Girl with the Dragon Tattoo series.

“She’s such an intriguing character: strong, smart and tough. It saddens me that the author of the series, Stieg Larsson, died at such a young age. I think his work is brilliant. Although, I don’t think the writing has to be brilliant for readers to get caught up in the story,” she told me. “There are some technically ‘great’ writers who are not great storytellers and I don’t believe that can be classified as good writing. It’s not good to me, anyway! I prefer a compelling story over beautiful words that lack substance.”

Dakota always seem to construct her characters first, then come up with situations that will challenge them and in which they can grow.

“I think for some genres (like romance), it works well. If I was writing mysteries or thrillers I may be more inclined to think in terms of plot but I have yet to write in those genres,” she said.

Some of the authors that have inspired her to start writing contemporary, and predominantly New Adult, romance were Colleen Hoover (Slammed, Hopeless), Jamie McGuire (Beautiful Disaster) and Tammara Webber (Easy).

“Those three authors completely changed my perception of the romance genre and I felt like I could write romance novels that were not just about sex but also tackled other series subjects,” she explained.

“What do you like to do when you aren’t writing?” I wondered.

“I love to read, which I think it true of most writers. I try to read a few books a week although it isn’t always possible with my intense writing schedule. I also love watching movies. I enjoy spending time with my husband and our bloodhounds. I also like to travel. I’ve been to nearly every US state and 13 foreign countries.”

Finally, I asked, “If you could spend a day with anyone from history, dead or alive, who would it be, and what would you do? What would you ask them?”

“I wrote a kid’s book called The Incredibly Awesome Adventure of Puggie Liddell (under my legal name). It’s about siblings who travel through time. I had the characters meet Nikola Tesla because I find him absolutely fascinating and I want to meet him myself. I would ask him about his inventions and I’d want to know more about his death ray machine!”

If There’s One Thing He Hates, It’s a Secret…

Coming home after a rough deployment, Captain Dwayne Robertson wants some stability in his life, and finds it in the friendship he’s forged with Veronica Gibson while he was away. But her past is a well-guarded mystery, and Dwayne doesn’t know if he can deal with a woman who has something to hide…

And She’s Filled with Them…

Veronica Gibson doesn’t want anyone to know about her bizarre upbringing. She’s finally escaped her missionary parents and would be enjoying her independence if she didn’t feel so insecure about fitting in. She can easily envision a glorious future with Dwayne—but can she build a new life on a web of lies?

Don’t let the blurb make you think that the book is heavy with dark melodrama, angst and heavy conflict. It’s not. It’s actually a very nice story with some great introspection, humor, even some tenderness, and has a solid handle on what it’s like for a soldier to suffer PTSD. It’s well balanced and a wonderful, satisfying romance.
Currently, some 14 states have allowed medical usage of spinal manipulation can be traced back over 3000 years to ancient Chinese scriptures. appalachianmagazine.com cialis in Sometimes even the severest problem between the couple gets solved with that sexy smile. low priced cialis Human skin is the cheap levitra uk outer covering and largest organ of the man. This occurs daily (usually from the night until midmorning, about visit my website buy pfizer viagra an hour after we wake) and it may worsen with swallowing.
The one thing that was made very clear, crystal clear to me, was that Dwayne was a BIG guy. Large shoulders, large … well, everything and that includes his Southern drawl. Another aspect of that hugeness is his capacity to love life, to feel, to have empathy and understanding for others. It’s apparent that he has great loyalty towards his friends and anyone who is family to them, is family to him. It’s those near and dear friendships that keep the hero from feeling too insecure when he starts experiencing symptoms of PTSD. I enjoyed how the author had the characters interact, both with dialogue and descriptions. I liked when he messed up, they let him know it and in turn, he accepted their razzing and when he could, would give it back. It was that give and take in his friendships that made him a well-rounded hero. When he met the heroine, I was happy that he could see beyond the missish clothing and suspected the passion she held inside. He was patient with the heroine but not like molasses, thank goodness.

Veronica is a butterfly just emerging from her chrysalis. She’s an extreme late-bloomer and the story follows her as she finds and explores what it means to be her. To claim that she was repressed is an understatement. I enjoyed reading about her reactions to Dwayne, and the progression from wariness to awareness, and tentative flirting to all out seducing her man. Veronica endured some changes on the way to make that seduction happen and it wasn’t smooth sailing because every now and again, the hero’s PTSD sort of got in the way. It’s through the hero and heroine’s interaction during those periods that proved the measure of the woman and the belief that their relationship was going to be solid, eventually.

There’s only one part that didn’t jive for me and that was the first consummation. Somehow, the hero should have either figured it out, something should have been said or the ‘evidence’ of her first time might have been noted. I can’t recall him ever being aware that he truly was her first. Considering some of the things that made him feel ‘caveman-ish’, I would have thought that it would have been a biggie. Considering how many times the heroine referred to it, I thought it would have been a momentous moment – or, something. It was a nonevent and that lack left me a bit perplexed.

Another thing that needs saying is that this is the third book in a trilogy about a trio of Marines who find love. I have not read the other two and did not suffer from the lack. This book was a good standalone and the only thing it managed to do was make me curious about reading the previous two. The first one sounds like it might have been really funny along with an interesting plot conflict. Certainly the premise grabbed my attention.

The Officer and the Secret delivers a solid romance. It’s filled with fun characters, a poignant and believable conflict from the hero and a delightful blossoming heroine. The story is well paced and delivered with an easy flowing storytelling voice. I’m totally pleased with the happy ever after, and highly recommend this book to other romance readers. Ms. Murray has a winner with this one.

What an inspiring story about the strength of family, and how nothing is impossible as long as you have loved ones. Maddy came home to Logan county not knowing exactly what to expect, but quickly found herself in a whirlwind of issues. Maddy has a inner strength that is remarkable. She has to deal with more than a woman should have to between losing her husband which leaves her a single mother of a young child, and possibly watching the bank take her childhood home, plus much more. Instead of crumbing under the pressure she pulls her and her family up to rise above the smoke. Her ability to rally herself and lead others is remarkable, and truly touching.

The plots in this story are truly entertaining. There are multiple layers of this story and I loved peeling back each one just to find something new. Running for her life, a frantic witch finds the man of her dreams. But can she trust him not to betray her?

Hacked at with knives and tossed in the Danube, Melis Andresen’s tormentors are certain she’s dead. But for quick thinking, witchcraft and her training as a healer, she would have been. She’s asleep in a bedraggled heap next to a small fire when a man walks out of the surrounding woods. Though she doesn’t know it at the time, her life is about to change forever.

The premise for this story sold me on this story. It suggests something momentous will follow this mysterious man’s arrival. It begins with a great short sentence, setting a fast pace, then follows with visual scenes of her plight. The environment is well established, full of colour, movement and urgent thought.

Ann Gimpel certainly understands how people think in a “do or die” situation and this comes across. She also has description skills which kept me in the moment of the story throughout, even if, in places, the word choice seemed a touch too modern – ‘It felt too damned good’ as an example.

The issue with the story, comes after Melis is found by her rescuer; her acclimatization to her new environment, as well as her sudden care for the people within it, seemed to come about too fast. There is no time for character development or a slow warming to the new situation. Instead, people are pushed together. The plot continues at a very fast pace, with backstory on the new people being thrust upon the reader with no precursors. This added to my feeling that the ending was unsatisfactory. It did not seem to believably change Melis’ life forever and it did not change it in the non-ordinary way I was expecting.

The romance within A Matter of Honor followed suit, happening at a good pace until suddenly the sexual partners were in a bedroom together with only a few shared kisses as build up. This reduces the impact the budding romance (and resultant sex) could have.

The paranormal could and should be a bigger part of this story but, mainly, I think the story could do with being longer. This is not a fault of the short story format, either. The plot needs time to unravel, for precursors and omens to big events to be established and, most importantly, it needs the rescuer and Melis to form a much deeper bond before the new paranormal element is introduced.

However, Ann Gimpel is a good writer. Her narrative style is not to the point but descriptive, detailing the environment in such a way the reader can escape from this reality into hers. Despite the brevity of this story, it has the makings of something which will stick with a reader and make them wonder about past lives and times. The characters, in themselves, are also realistic and well-rounded. Gimpel has me intrigued with these characters and with her clear ability, and I look forward to reading more of her stories in future.

When his dreams of marrying his beloved Gallia crumble to ash, Jhond of the House of Reeve knows he must leave home. Having grown up among the old legends of the time of magistry, he decides to follow the clues to find the fabled Temple of the Magi. On his journey there, he meets up with Ninian, who knows more than it first seems. Together they investigate the Temple, and Ninian helps Jhond to realize the truth of his ability. Magistry is not simply a long past myth, it exists. Ninian is a mage—and so is Jhond.

It is only the beginning of their epic journey. They make new friends and dangerous enemies, become embroiled in a war of empires, encounter old loves and learn the value of forgiveness, while all the time Jhond refines his skills as a mage.

In times of strife when all hope seems to be lost, a leader, called the Eynan, will appear, or so say the legends. However, the time of the mages is long past and few believe that the tales are true. Jhond has always studied the old histories, learning from his grandfather, and when he came of age, he became the guardian of a secret library. When his dreams of marrying his childhood sweetheart are destroyed, Jhond is forced to leave home. With his life turned upside-down, he decides that it is time to find the Temple of the Magi. He meets Ninian, who turns out to be a mage, and Ninian is convinced that Jhond is the long sought after Eynan. Never was help needed more as the Emperor of the Illurian Empire marches across nation after nation, added by a powerful mage, killing all who opposed them. Can Jhond learn about his power in time to save his world?

L. S. Gibson has written a fantastic novel filled with fast-paced adventures and fully developed characters. The setting is a richly described world which feels very real. Jhond is a young man whose happy plans for marriage are destroyed when his father reveals a long held secret, and Jhond is understandably devastated. He has spent his life as the third son, a scholar and philosopher, and all he dreamt about was making a home and continuing to look after his family’s library. But that was never his path and he soon learns that his destiny is to be the strongest mage of all, the Eynan. I felt that Gibson did an excellent job of developing Jhond so that I really believed in him. His transformation from a quiet scholar into a powerful mage is handled skillfully and compassionately.

There are a host of characters in the novel whom I also found compelling and most of them, very likeable. I was impressed by Ninian, who comes from a mage family which has been given the task of finding the Eynan. Ninian is a strong mage in his own right, but he only wants to find and help the Eynan. He and Jhond develop a close friendship, working well together, with no sense of rivalry. And then there is the ship’s captain Amired, who never before believed in the old tales, but who joins with Jhond and Ninian to fight for his country’s freedom. I could go on and on, but this three characters alone would make this a strong book and they are not alone by any means. Even relatively minor characters, such as a few of Amired’s sailors, are portrayed with well defined and believable personas.

The plot is full of action and while the book is 436 pages long, I found that I couldn’t put it down. I resented any interruptions, and I was totally absorbed in the plot as the action never let up. If you enjoy fantasy, this is definitely a book not to be missed. It offers a rich, complex story with great characters in an interesting setting. I highly recommend it to any lovers of fantasy.

I have had the privilege of reading several of the “Phoenix Agency” books and even reviewing some previously, and I have to say that I find the whole series to be well written and absolutely fun to read. Ms. Holt can write a passionate adventure that is filled with conspiracy and twisting plots that can entertain her reader’s from start to finish. I could not put this book down until I read it all the way through in one sitting.

I love her main characters. I felt that Troy was an excellent hero for the selfless heroin Lauren. I thought their romance was well described and I loved the fact that she brings in some of our past favorite characters from previous books in the series. One of the best selling points to me however was the fact that this was a good stand alone book. You did not need to read all of the previous books to figure out what was going on. This book covered all the ground-work needed to enjoy this paranormal mystery. Her villains were despicable and I love an evil villain (or two).

‘I’d never set out to snag Mr Right but I’d veered so far off that track I was now at the mercy of Mr Dangerously Wrong…’

Betrayed by her lover, Natalie Lovell finds herself exploring the world of internet dating.

There are unlimited romantic places on this Earth, the viagra in the usa limiting factor is the distance, which gets ruled out if you have a vehicle. 4. All in all, avoid cheap pills and always look cialis de prescription for better treatment option. Now we have a clear approach towards dyslexia. sildenafil without prescription cheap levitra Acai berry can also help in improving the fertility. Then she meets a dark sexy stranger online who promises all the danger, excitement and dominance she craves. But how far will Natalie go to get the ultimate in thrills…?

Desire can be a dangerous thing, especially when it knocks all sense off course and satisfaction becomes the only goal. But occasionally in life, you just have to go for what you damn well want, grab it by the balls and hang on for the ride!

I let myself fall into the sumptuously written Thrill Seeker whilst lying on a sunny Spanish beach. Warmth and the artificialness of a week of no worries allowed me to drift to a shadowy place where seedy desires and dangerous wanting ruled in the harsh light of day. Did I regret that drift into a forbidden, dark and dangerous world? No way! Because Ms Lloyd makes it all okay to do so. I adored that about Thrill Seeker, the absolute ownership of the heroine’s kinky desires and her attitude of not having to gain permission or explain the reason for her lusty fantasies but to just go with what feels really-damn-good regardless of societies frowning face or the guilt that might knock at the door afterwards.

Thrill Seeker is edgy for sure, but when you pluck a Kristina Lloyd book off the shelf (or in my case download to Kindle) what do you expect? For me that’s the draw of this author, I love being taken to the periphery of what is both mine and the heroine’s comfort zone. Being in the heroine’s head and hearing her articulate her way down a complex path as she searches for the experiences she craves is both intimate and grounding. What I loved most about Natalie India was her absolute self-belief, she was on seriously dodgy territory more than a few times, my heart raced for her on occasion and I questioned her sanity more than once, not least I wondered what the hell her mother would say, but, ultimately she took control. In a world where submission can be seen as weak, this book throws that concept right out of the water. Submission, simply, is about power, and allowing another person to have that power, and the exchanges that ricochet around the pages in Natalie’s story kept me panting for more and breathless to see if her risk would pay off with the ultimate thrill. Her power was knife sharp, she also walked on a knife’s edge. I couldn’t stop reading…

There are three main men in Thrill Seeker, a shaky starting point for a lot of books unless the intention is a ménage; but these three guys, and to an extent the extra peripheral men too, create the sexual experiences and ‘right now’ that is the heroine’s moment. For me I found this very real; no one is made up of one sexual encounter, it is the sum total not the parts that creates a sexual history. And, despite being so different, I liked all the men, a lot, they each brought something vital to the structure of the novel, be it sweet, dangerous, painful or soul-aching, not one could have been omitted. What ever the reader’s ultimate thoughts are, Den, Liam and Baxter are key players in Natalie’s life and each so different and so in tune with the varied currents that float her boat that I adored them all. Obsession after all, is a powerful train to step aboard and I, for one, understood her reasons for buying that ticket!

These discoveries are linked to the end of the Mayan calendar cycle on December 21, 2012, and unless the riddle is solved and acted upon, the world as we know it will end. David seems very human and real, and I enjoyed watching him wrestle with two girlfriends, Israeli and Egyptian agents, and other assorted characters. I also found a number of the secondary characters to be interesting and enjoyable, especially Dalia and Aristopos. Robert Blum’s knowledge of the history and mythologies of the Middle East, ancient Mayan civilization, Japan, and an assortment of major religions is amazing. His descriptions of the various locations in the book are so detailed that it is easy to feel a part of the action. I did find that the pace slowed slightly when Blum had to detail a lot of history, but overall, the plot was action packed and fast moving.

Blum vividly brings the past to life. I found it fascinating to read about the cyclical nature of the Mayan calendar. Having just witnessed all the speculations surrounding the end of the three thousand year old cycle, it was fun to read this story about just what might have been going on behind the scenes.

Readers of fantasy, especially those readers who like ancient history, will enjoy reading this account of why the Mayan calendar cycle was able to begin again without causing the end of humankind.

For almost a year, every month surrounding a full moon, young girls have vanished without a trace from their homes in their small town and its surrounding farms. Just before the next child is set to disappear, a young stranger arrives. This short is haunting, a new story which resembles fairy tales of old. Arella has her own, odd, way of speaking which singles her out as well as creates her character. She and her fiddle are joined as if one, with striking similarities to the pied piper when the locals’ concern is taken into account.

The plot is fast paced and reaches a surprising conclusion which is intriguing, if not entirely satisfying. There is need for the twist to be better foreshadowed in the main text as it comes out of nowhere rather than acts as a true surprise.

However, that should not detract too much from Getty’s accomplishments here. There is consistently great description and an air of homelessness to the story. It is obviously in the past but an exact century or decade, even country, would be hard to pick. Far from being a problem, this is a virtue. It has the enchanting allure of allowing me to place the action in my own back garden, should I wish. This makes the horror later on seem all the more real.

Getty does the job: she portrays a small town and its culture down to minute detail. In the process, she creates a magical world on the border of history and place, a fairy town for a new fairy tale.
