The Firebird Scouts of Wayne County, Detroit, Michigan. Somehow or another, they’ve managed to survive an attack from a werewolf in their last adventure, as well as each other’s competing personalities.

But this time, when they have to overcome a garden that literally takes on a life of its own, can they put their differences aside, again, to overcome it? Or will it eat them before they can eat it?

The Firebird Scouts of Wayne County decide this year to try really hard and win the team award that is held annual between all the scouts in the local area. The Firebird scouts leader, Izzy, decides they’re going to build a victory garden. The concept is based on the World War II victory gardens, where citizens would set aside certain sections of their gardens to grow crops to send over to the veterans to assist their victory. Lenny and Carl let themselves get talked into buying some seeds from a stranger, and that’s where their good intentions all start to fall apart. For while the seeds are for vegetables, they’re not “normal” crops at all.

This is a fun and quirky non-romance story. While there are mentions of werewolves and other magical/alternate world type things, it’s the magical vegetables that really steal the show. I found it a bit jarring to read of girl scouts swearing like troopers and hurling insults at each other like sailors – but if taken lightly and looked on in a humorous manner this short story is really funny. Unlike anything I’ve read before, it makes me curious whether this was a type of experimental form of writing for Mr Perlmutter or whether there are other works of his along a similar vein.

Utterly unique and quite funny, this is a great short story.

Mary Burton is an established author. This is her thirteenth book. I’ve read her work before and was glad to get the opportunity to read this new book. Ms. Burton writes action packed stories with lots of tension and suspense. You don’t have time to be bored, she never gives away the bad guy early, and she generally packs a punch in her endings. This book lived up to all that hype.

Lara is survivor. She was attacked by the Seattle Strangler and survived. She can’t help with the case because she has amnesia about the attack. Years have passed, she’s been to doctor after doctor trying to unlock those memories, and she still cannot recall anything. When the killer appears to have resurfaced in Austin, TX, the cops really want her to try to remember again. She refuses until the mother of one of the victims makes her own appeal. Then she tries…

I had suspicions about who the killer was. I was half right. This author always manages to sucker punch me with her endings. I would never have guessed the Seattle Strangler’s identity. Neither did anyone in the story.

This story winds around the past and the present and ties it all together as you reach the conclusion of the story. It’s a good thing Lara has a Texas Ranger in love with her; she’ll need him for more than her bed before the end of the story.

When you sit down to read this, make sure you set some time aside to do it. You won’t want to put it down…

For years, Ian Sands has enjoyed his life as a bachelor, taking advantage of singlehood and exploring his own definition of passion—whoever she may be. Blonde. Brunette. Tall. Short. Hot. Not. Five months ago, all that changed.

Ian’s been celibate, frustrated and desperately seeking answers to why one woman, who doesn’t play by girls’ rules, haunts his every waking moment.

As a renovations specialist, Taylor Marsh lives, works and breathes construction—a profession her southern belle of a mother would rather Taylor not touch. The same goes for Ian; Mama Marsh would never approve of him.

Like Ian, though, each time he and Taylor draw near, something compels her to get closer.

Something else tells her to run away.

Do you ever feel such a powerful attraction to someone, like you’ve known them for so long, but they are a stranger to you? Can you really rule out the possibility of a past life? Open up your eyes, and your heart, to a situation that is truly hard to believe, but for Taylor and Ian, it may be the only explanation. Now, if only they could keep out of trouble or harm’s way long enough to sort through this strange mystery….

Taylor is one of those women you don’t want to mess with. What a great leading lady. She has a slight fragile tone to her, but she’s really anything but. Taylor’s had a past that is a bit bumpy, and things aren’t getting better at the moment. She has strange fears, and dreams that she only wishes she could come to understand, and Ian, the stranger that he is, seems so familiar, too. But things aren’t going to be made easy for Taylor. Does that mean she’s going to go down without a fight? Oh, no. Definitely not. C’mon, Taylor, beat the odds!

Ian can’t explain his odd fixation on Taylor, he just knows he wants to be near her, with her, around her. He can’t stop thinking about her, even though he can’t explain why. He too, has to open his mind to the unimaginable. With every step of trouble Taylor walks into, Ian isn’t far behind, saving her, over and over. There are secrets to uncover, and neither of them will enjoy rehashing the past.

From the beginning, I had a huge interest in this story. The pace starts out a bit slow, but it definitely picks up, keeping up the hype and the suspense about Taylor and Ian. It only gets more intense as the book goes on. With a well crafted plot, very well done characters, and plenty of mystery to keep things on the edge, Silence Echoes is one of those stories that weaves the reader in and keeps a tight hold. You should see my hands…a little red with the grip marks.

From what I gathered, this may be the second book in a series. Some of the characters seemed like they had a story prior. Regardless, I wasn’t pulled away from it or confused, so if it Is a series, it’s not extremely important that they be read in order.

For a great mystery, a mix of paranormal, and a heck of a romance all bundled into one book, you should give Silent Echoes a chance.

When a normally quiet and polite Vampire Slayer is tasked to help an arrogant and selfish demon, only trouble can ensue.

Guilt-ridden by a mistake that cost her fellow Slayers their lives and the subsequent tarnished reputation of her brother’s business, Slayer-born Elise Castle agrees to work with the sexy, but arrogant and selfish, Xavier Doom, by bringing in his demon-turned-vampire friend. If she succeeds, her brother can hire more Slayers while Xavier’s status guarantees them more clients.

Xavier is a Fallen, a special kind of demon with an insatiable appetite for women, money and power. When his best friend is kidnapped and turned into a vampire, he hires the best Slayer money can buy. If the Slayer fails, Xavier stands to lose not only his childhood friend, but the opportunity to skyrocket his wealth with the top secret information hidden in his friend’s mind.

Xavier’s arrogance grates on her nerves while his concern and charm reels Elise in. But can she give her heart to a creature like her father, a Fallen, who had abandoned his family for the appeal of money and power? Or will she see Xavier for the good and loyal man he truly is?

Defiant and strong-willed, Elise is a challenge. Yet her strength and courage appeals to Xavier while her no sex policy has him hot for her. As his feelings for her grow, he must make a decision. Give his heart and soul to a woman who can only offer him her love, or walk away from her and seize the chance for more money and power?

Lives and friendships are at stake while love and loyalty is put to the test. Will Elise and Xavier come out unscathed and together? Or will a secret from Elise’s past tear them apart?

With some unique twists to the usual “slayer” plot, Ms. Mathews novel, My Fallen intrigued me from the get-go.

The book has created some fascinating ideas about those who are less than (or perhaps more than) human. For instance, people who are changed to vampires have a period of time during which they may potentially be changed back. It’s short — seventy-two hours — but a great idea (and the basis of this book, actually, as Xavier and Elise wouldn’t have met if not for this).

The author has given a huge set of conflicts, both internal and external, to keep our hero and heroine apart and it was difficult for me to imagine they’d be able to overcome them all.

I admit, I didn’t like Xavier at first. He was exceptionally blunt and crude to Elise when they first met and if I’d been Elise, I’d have most likely smacked the smug look of his face and then slammed the door on any interaction with him. His initial behavior didn’t endear him to me in the least. But don’t worry … he does some growing and changing as the book progresses and eventually becomes someone I could get behind Elise falling for.

I liked Elise right off. She’s smart, strong, loyal and determined. This is why her reaction to Xavier didn’t ring true to me, at least not at first. She had every reason to dislike him intensely, but it takes no time at all before they’re groping each other and getting naked. I admit, I’m a fan of lots of sexual tension build up before things get physical, so this part of the novel frustrated me some. However, the Fallen are apparently very sexual beings, so as I got to know Xavier and Elise better, I could understand it a bit more.

The plot was truly fantastic, though. It’s a complex world the author has built and populated with exceptionally realistic characters. I’d be hard pressed to name the secondary character I liked best, though I am pulling for Drake to have his own book next.

I spent much of the book wondering who was bad, who wasn’t, what information was correct, and so on. We have lots of information to process, plenty of action (in and out of bed) and a storyline that reels the reader in and holds on tight.  Ashlyn Mathews is a new to me author, and I’m so pleased I opted to review this book.  If she continues on as she’s begun, this book series will be stunning.   My Fallen is sure to please any paranormal romance fan, especially those readers who like their books hot!

There’s more than one way to breech a maidenhead, and if teaching her the ways of a woman’s pleasure with a carved ivory dildo is what it takes to make her his, then he’s more than happy to challenge the wrath of a god…

What an awesome book ! This series gets even more interesting as the author ventures deeper into Norse mythology. After reading the first book, Malice Striker, I couldn’t help contemplating what kind of wondorous journey Ms. Carlo would take the readers on in the next book. Well, I just want to unequivocally state that she did not disappoint with Konnal’s story. It was wonderfully romantic as well as overflowing with action and suspense. And as expected, the heat level was hot enough to scorch your panties off.

Death Blow…a name that strikes fear in the hearts of mortal men. But not even the fierce viking can intimidate a woman who knows she isn’t long for this world. Konall -aka Death Blow- gets more than he anticipated when he buys himself a bride from King Kenneth. As with his brothers wife, his betrothed is goddess born also. Coincidence? I think not. I strongly suspect that sly old King Kenneth has some kind of trick up his sleeve with these arranged marriages.

Nyssa feels neither fear nor lust for any man. Well, she may have lusted after Konnal after she and her brother , who has been transformed into a mountain lion , save his life. But Nyssa has been cursed to a fiery death by a vengeful god. Only a very special man can save her. Konall proves that he is the perfect man for Nyssa when he ingeniously frees her from her curse. Even freed from the curse Nyssa is reluctant to wed Konnal. She believes she has good reasons, but I don’t do spoilers , so you’ll have to read the book to find out the rest of her secrets. I will say that she is every bit as stubborn as Konnal and it sets the stage for a lot of tension both in and out of bed.

I loved this story and can’t wait for Draddor to find his true love in the next book. How could his journey be any more exciting and romantic than his brothers. Something tells me that it just might be. Hopefully, we will discover what happened to Nyssa’s brother, Mus/Ciarran, and meet the lucky lady who will break his curse. Hint…Hint. I’m giving this wonderful gem of a story five flying stars.

Stunned by Daniel’s offer to train her as his sub for one week, Julia’s gut instinct is to pull the plug. But when they finally meet, Julia’s dormant desire flares, and her private fantasies can’t compare to what Daniel does with his hands, a flogger or a pair of cuffs.

Faced with a mouthwatering proposition and bent to his will, can Julia attain true submission before the week’s end, or will she walk away with nothing more than the memory of Daniel’s kiss, a taste of his skin, and a new-found desire like she has never experienced before?

Enveloped in her growing desire to know more about the world of bondage and BDSM, Julia oversteps the boundaries of her role as a therapist and agrees to meet her client Daniel at his dungeon. A Dom and owner of Journeys, Daniel is a master in his universe and intends to show Julia what it means to be a sub under his control.

Early into the book, I found myself wondering why Julia would allow herself to go beyond the constraints of her position of therapist, but as the story kept moving forward I understood perfectly. Daniel is a hottie and his masterful presence would have tested any woman’s boundaries. Agreeing to one week of training to better understand the lifestyle, Julia rushes headlong into one of the most intense experiences a person can have.

Being a reader of BDSM erotica and a student of the lifestyle, I have looked into the use of the title “master”. Most of the literature I have come across and from my experience, “master” is either used when you are in a dedicated relationship that is very close to a marriage commitment or are in a M/s (master, slave) arrangement. The use of the term master in this book felt a little premature to me. Using “Sir” would have been a better choice, but I also understand that the term, just like the lifestyle, can be used with varied degrees of involvement. In this short term scenario, having the sub call the dominant “master” made me question it a little more than I would have normally, but again, to each reader goes the experience and preference.

Overall, the interaction between Daniel and Julia was hot and the author did a great job of ratcheting up the sexual tension. The scene where Daniel circles Julia to access her level of fear or nervousness was really done well. You could see it in your mind like a movie playing out across the screen. Different BDSM scenarios that delve into voyeurism make things very intense and I found this book to be one that kept my interest.

If you want a read that brings BDSM and voyeurism to the cutting edge of patient-client relations then this one is for you.

Sixteen-year-old Maggie Winters can’t think of anything more exciting than junior year. There’s her first prom to look forward to, she can drive, and most important Connor Prince has finally noticed her. But unfortunately so has the school snob, Katrina Melville, who goes out of her way to make Maggie’s life a living hell. If that’s not enough, Maggie’s grandma has decided to retire, which doesn’t seem like such a big deal. That is until she finds out her grandma is a Fairy Godmother, and not just any Fairy Godmother. The Fairy Godmother, as in Cinderella, pumpkins, and mice. And she has informed Maggie that she’s next in line to become the new Fairy Godmother.

At first Maggie is excited, the whole getting wings, flying (or rather trying not to crash), and a wand that let’s her grant wishes. It’s like being a superhero, without all the action, explosions, and spandex. Then she gets her first assignment, Katrina Melville, her nemesis. And if that doesn’t make her want to poof herself into oblivion, she finds out that part of Katrina’s happily-ever-after is Connor Prince. Life is so unfair. Even worse, she can’t tell her two best friends about any of it and they’re getting sick of her disappearing acts. Then there are the dangerous creatures, called Grimms who will stop at nothing to keep the happy endings from being fulfilled, even if it means destroying the Fairy Godmother responsible. With time running out, Maggie has to make this wish come true or it will ruin the fates of everyone involved, and open the world to darkness beyond imagination. Maggie will soon find out what it truly means to be a Fairy Godmother—and it isn’t all about princes, gowns, and wings, but something much more.

I think every teenager (and some adults) hopes that there is some secret destiny meant only for them, just waiting to be discovered. It may be a secret talent, or maybe you want to be the next “big thing” in the acting or modeling world. Perhaps, for some maybe it’s the life of a spy, or if you really dream big, maybe you are waiting to find out that you are the long, lost princess of a foreign land. I could hazard a guess that not many expect to find out that they are the next Fairy Godmother. Yes, that one. Minus the singing mice (so far). I think few could do it with the absolute hilarity that Maggie Winters does though.

That’s complete insanity to a high school girl. If she refuses, the world will be taken over by evil. Talk about pressure! There are some perks though. She gets to learn how to fly and do magic. She even gets her very own Knight in Shining Armor – what more could a girl want? Well, for one thing, maybe for the Knight to not be her brother. At least the boy that she’s been crushing on for years, Connor Prince, is finally noticing her. Except then she finds out that her very first assignment is, Katrina, a classmate that she loathes and her happily ever after is with Connor. Oh and not only is she not allowed to tell anyone but now she has these evil things called Grimms that are trying to kill her. Junior year is so not working out like she thought it would.

The voice of the teenager in this book is so authentic that they could have been standing in front of me narrating it. Ms. Purdy has done an excellent job with the characters in this book. We have the nice girl, the mean girl, the jealous best friend, the annoying brother, the hot guy, the guy best friend that could be more, and the evil stepmother. All of them are well fleshed out and uniquely individual. Maggie is a great heroine. She is her own person, even if she’s not sure for herself who that is yet, the reader can clearly see it. She is compassionate and selfless, insecure and lovestruck and hilariously overwhelmed with her new responsibilities. Jackson is a great older brother, both protective and annoying, as most older brothers are. Seth is sweet, a little bit of a bad boy and very hot. And Taylor is fantastically loyal and protective of her friend while Katrina is guarded and prickly until you get to know the real girl hiding behind the mask. Maggie’s mom and dad, her evil stepmother and the annoying step-sisters are all well drawn out. Even though we don’t see as much of them as the others, we get a clear picture on who they are.

There were a couple of points in the book that confused me a bit. It took me a while to figure out how old Maggie’s brother, Jackson, is. They have the same friends, eat lunch together at school and seem pretty close so, for a while, I wondered if maybe they were twins. This got cleared up but it was quite a ways into the book. I was also confused as to why Maggie’s grandmother just sort of threw her into the position without helping her figure out what she was doing. Especially when there are Grimms whose sole mission is to kill her. Having said that, Maggie not knowing what she is doing leads to several hilarious moments.

This book kept me laughing out loud through the entire thing. I haven’t laughed this much reading a book in a while. If it ever gets picked up for a movie, I will be the first in line. Despite the humor, there is a very valuable lesson that comes across in this book – things, and people, aren’t ever what they seem, whether good or bad. In helping the girl that has been bullying her in school, Maggie soon realizes that Katrina isn’t truly the image she displays at school and that there are reasons for the way she is. In learning this lesson, she gains a new friend.

This is one book, that while I lamented the open ending that left me hanging a bit, I was glad to see that I’ll get to follow more of the adventures of these fun teens. I will be anxiously watching for the next book in this series. I can’t wait! Well written, with a few twists and turns that had me gripping my reader in suspense, and tons of humor, this is a book that I would recommend to anyone, adults and teens alike. If you pass this one up, you will truly be missing out on an excellent story.

“It’s not always obvious when you are in the middle of a full on ghost story,” warns Jeremy K. Tyler and he’s correct. Orlin Wood definitely is haunted but figuring out why and by whom is what makes this book worth reading.

Talking about an event without knowing why it happened takes practice. In many cases it’s never entirely clear what actually happened to some of the Orlin family members. Did they actually encounter supernatural events? Could some of their experiences be explained away through alcohol use, hallucinations or coincidences? In real life not everything can be explained logically. Sometimes records are lost or never created in the first place and what is common knowledge of local lore in one generation is forgotten in the next.

It was gratifying to learn one possible explanation for why these woods are haunted. I would have preferred to be given more details about what happened and whether the spirits in the woods are benevolent but this information is not strictly necessary. A case could be made for several different theories and even though I’m intensely curious to know how Mr. Tyler interprets the clues there is a satisfaction that accompanies the freedom to make up one’s own mind about these things. My only complaint is that we were not given this information earlier on in the plot as not having it was a distraction for this reader.

Technically Orlin Wood is a collection of short stories but the characters are so closely intertwined by virtue of being a member of the Orlin clan and spending time on the family property that it reads more like a traditional novel. Each tale is enriched by the ones that come before and after it. There were times when I didn’t fully understand the meaning of a symbol or conversation until something similar happened to another Orlin generations later.

If you’re in the mood for ghost stories that are as subtle as they are chilling Orlin Wood is a great choice. Sometimes the true horror of certain experiences take time to register but patient readers will be rewarded with a wealth of spine-tingling scenes.

Before New York Times bestselling author Kerrelyn Sparks created a world of vampires, there was another world of spies and romance . . . Virginia Munro could not believe her ears. This bewigged, bejeweled, and bedeviling man was trying to buy her? As if she were some trollop on the Boston docks? Before she’s fully able to give in to her outrage, the fop moves on—and Virginia refuses to spare him another thought. But Quincy Stanton is not what he seems. By day, he poses as a carefree Loyalist with an army of wigs and a wardrobe that favors lavender. By night, he wages a secret war against the British with an impressive collection of eighteenth-century spy gadgets. If anyone were to discover the truth, Quincy would hang, yet he can’t seem to stay away from the lovely and saucy Virginia. Will their attraction lead to love . . . or danger?

Set during the pre-Revolutionary War era of 1769, The Forbidden Lady is classic Kerrelyn Sparks storytelling. Fans of her Love at Stake series are already familiar with her terrific writing voice. This is a different side of a fantastic storyteller but no less entertaining. I think sometimes writers become known for a genre and then try to switch to something completely different and lose their initial fanbase. I don’t see this being the case for Ms. Sparks. Previously released under the title of For Love or Country, The Forbidden Lady is packed with action and suspense I didn’t want to see end.

The lady who catches Quin’s eye and sends his well placed plans into a tail spin is the lovely Virgina (Ginny) Munro. She’s nosy and inconvenient but Quin can’t seem to leave her alone. Their confrontations are full of sexual tension and just as often downright funny. I found myself laughing out loud on more than one occasion.

Ms. Spark’s story will grab the attention of James Bond enthusiast as well when they realize Quin comes ready to do some serious spy work with gadgetry that’s appropriate for the era. Nothing over the top or outrageous but no less clever in its design.

Without giving away the ending I will say not everyone will appreciate its subtleties. Ms. Sparks gives the reader plenty to think about and dwell on in regards to Quin and Ginny’s future. There’s no doubt that they’re together, it’s a romance after all, but the story continues on well after the last page. Read it and I think you’ll understand.
