INTERVIEW and Giveaway: ELLEN L. EKSTROM

Long and Short Reviews welcomes Ellen L. Ekstrom, whose newest release Scarborough is now available. Scarborough was originally designed to be a stand-alone volume, but the more Ellen wrote, the more it became obvious that the story was far from over.

“Quinn Radcliffe got under my skin,” she admitted. “Right before its release we decided it would be part of series, which is called Midwinter Sonata. The title for the series came to me during a lunch hour back-and-forth exchange with the editor in e-mails. ‘How about this?’ ‘What about this?’ sort of thing. I thought, everything happens to these people in the winter – good and bad. We wanted something to do with music and it hit me. Also, the story is based on fact, even though it is a romantic fantasy and I use the structure of a sequence of dreams – events happen out of sequence but they all connect, just like in dreams. The operative word is ‘based.’ It came after a memorable night with friends that I hadn’t seen in a long while. I went to sleep full of good wine, conversation, memories, and I thought, what if we were given the chance to start over? To say I love you when the opportunity is there and not be afraid to say it? To forgive? It’s my take on It’s a Wonderful Life and A Christmas Carol.”

Ellen used to sit and watch her older sister, Kathy, write. It didn’t matter if it was homework, greeting cards, or whatever—Ellen found it fascinating.

“She had amazing penmanship and I wanted to imitate her. She also wrote stories about girls like us – poor but full of hope and promise – and after reading something to me from the Lang Fairy Tale Books she’d share her own work,” Ellen remembered. “By the time she was 13 she stopped writing because she discovered boys and I picked up where she left off. When it was my turn to discover boys it only fueled the writing. My stories were five page novels complete with illustrations and construction paper covers. My epic was ten pages and that was about the San Francisco Earthquake of 1906, in which a faery godmother helps a girl find her family when her house in North Beach is destroyed.”

Ellen got serious about writing as a career when she was in her early twenties.

“It may sound trite or like a cliché to state that I went through struggle, doubt, disappointment before (and after) publication, but I did. It’s not uncommon for writers,” she told me. “I was found by an independent press in 2004, when my first book, The Legacy was published, and then in 2009, I signed on with Central Avenue Publishing after receiving a tweet from its founder/creative director. I wrote a short story about the Resurrection from Jesus’ point of view and put it up on my writing blog. She saw it and here we are, almost four years later.”

She admitted to me that sometimes she will have bouts of writer’s block…and when she can’t write, she does research.

“For example, this last Sunday I spent three hours learning about single malt scotch for a character in my new book – given the intelligence of many readers today, I wanted to be sure he was drinking the right Glenfiddich for the time. No, I didn’t taste test. This is a better plan for me than my old cure for ‘The Boulder in the Middle of the Road,’ as I call The Block. For the longest time I pulled up to the refrigerator and tried to invoke the muse with pecan praline ice cream or macaroni and cheese but that proved unhealthy. Now I take rides on my bike or knit. I either get some exercise or someone gets something soft, warm and woolly by the time I’m ready to write again. When I was writing Armor of Light, my protagonist George, earl of Grasmere was stuck on a road somewhere in northern England for several months before I figured out what to do with him. If you want to know, I had him kill a dragon of sorts.”

Ellen is currently working on the next book in the Midwinter Sonata series and when she’s not working on that, she’s editing one of her first titles from her backlist– The Legacy, an adventure/romance set in 14th century Florence and Tuscany.

“Like Tolkien and The Hobbit, I’ve never been happy with it,” she confessed. “It’s my first novel, the first written and published, and needs a bit of attention and tweaking. I’m also working on the prequel to Armor of Light, my retelling of the St. George and the Dragon Legend. My readers will get to find out why George Ascalon, earl of Grasmere is such a strange man.”

The hardest part of writing for Ellen is finding enough time during the day, but she’s managed to get into a routine that works for her: an hour in the morning and one in the evening during the commute and as much as she can on days off.

“I started doing this when my children were toddlers. I learned to work the writing around their schedules, now it just works, period,” she said. “I don’t buy into the belief that if I was a ‘real writer’ I would find the time and write all the time. If I did, I don’t know how good the writing would or wouldn’t be. Most likely it wouldn’t be good. The biggest impact of doing that would be on my family – we wouldn’t have a place to live or food to eat. Life and making a living necessarily get in the way and I’ve learned to make the two compatible. Fortunately, I preach once a month, so I get to write for my vocation, too. Writing sermons has improved my technique in that I’ve learned to say more with less.”

“What did you want to be when you grew up?” I asked.

“What year are we talking about? I used to play church when I was a girl – I wanted to be behind the altar in the sanctuary saying the magic words and doing the magic hands. I wanted to be a clergy person. I used to marry and baptize my stuffed animals and the occasional doll. I’m at home in a church more than anywhere else. I also wanted to be a drummer in a rock band. Seriously. I did. I’ve always been a writer. For a short time I wanted to be a doctor because my mother wanted me to be a doctor, but being a clergy person is close, since it allows me to help heal souls and hearts.”

About the Author: 2_12 INTERVIEW EllenI’m a work in progress, but that process started a while ago. I’ve been fascinated by the Middle Ages since seeing Disney’s “Sleeping Beauty” when it was first run. This started a flood of drawings about castles and princesses – the usual stuff of six year olds – but it’s lasted longer than my mother had hoped. I stopped listening to the Tchaikowsky music about age nine and she was grateful for that, too. Now that I am in my own middle ages, the love of all things medieval is stronger than ever. To support the family, I work as a legal secretary. My real vocation is writing. And while I’m on vocations, I am a clergywoman in the Episcopal Church, the parish deacon at The Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd, Berkeley, but that’s a story for another day.

2_12 BOOK COVER 9781926760933med When Quinn Radcliffe shows up in a village somewhere in the Cotswolds or Dorset, he knows he’s been there before. It’s a place out of a Thomas Hardy novel – or the imagination. There’s the Curiosity Shop with The Proprietress and her famous guests, the church at the end of the lane, and unbelievable but necessary journeys that test and affirm. Now the conductor of a world-renowned orchestra, Quinn isn’t surprised by his surroundings – the love of his life, Alice Martin, told him all about the village but he has always and secretly thought it was the best part of a dream she shared after her life-threatening illness.

Until now.

There are two sides to every love story. This is the other side of the haunting and poignant romance that began with “Tallis’ Third Tune.”

What About SFF Attracts You?

I think I have to deal with another question first, namely, the question as to what science fiction (SF) is in the first place. But there’s no way I can do that without getting really pedantic and totally mired in obscure details. To begin with, not all F/SF appeals to me. (Not all of anything appeals to me.) In fact, it’s only a few select writers and a few select novels that have had any kind of affect on me. Along the way I’ll mention a few and try to point out what it is that they have that “calls to me.”

Ambrose Bierce – especially “Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge” (published in 1890 and replicated in various other media, including an episode of Twilight Zone): Not only do I like the way he tells a story with surprising twists and a dark, moody flavor, I like the fact that he worked with his experiences during the Civil War.

Harlan Ellison’s “A Boy and His Dog”: It’s a short story in his Cycle series and he later turned it into a novella – then it was made into a film. It’s dark and depressing and you can feel Ellison’s anger. I was impressed with his willingness to “go where no other SF novel had gone before.”

Jack Kerouac’s On the Road: It’s not in any way science fiction. It’s a story of self-discovery along with the discovery of the soul of America – a “road” story. His characters are what catch me…not so much the story itself. Deane Moriarty – one of his major characters — is based on one of his friends, Neal Cassady. Yes, writers DO construct characters from real-life persons they know. I like that!

Charles Bukowski in Tales of Ordinary Madness shows that you can write about the most brutal and seediest parts of life and make it poetic….not the life…but the words about it. He treats his fiction as poetry, and that’s what I find fascinating.

Robert Heinlein’s Stranger in a Strange Land is a kind of utopian novel. In this and all of his writings, he builds his own ideology into it – and not too cleverly! It’s far too obvious and it detracts from his stories. I can see, by this, what to avoid — preaching!

Author C. Clark: In almost all of his novels that I’ve read, the aliens are either only indirectly suggested – 2001 A Space Odyssey – or presented as totally different in kind from we humans, Childhood’s End (even though they look like something familiar to us). He doesn’t give us a bar scene like in Star Wars or a variety of “humanoids” as in Star Trek.

Bram Stoker’s Dracula – a perfect novel in the sense that he allowed the story telling to shape the form of the novel.

H.G.Wells’ Time Machine is the essence of a perfect time-travel story. He tries to make it conform with logic. The attempt must be made.

Well, I’m not sure I’ve answered your question, but perhaps by “skirting” it, you can see a kind of answer within this list: It’s not anything about science fiction that attracts me – it the writing of some people that attracts me, regardless of their genre.

But this problem of men’s can be solved by on line levitra http://secretworldchronicle.com/2017/03/ep-8-29-start-shootin%E2%80%99-part-3/? Are levitra and pregnancy not related more directly? His academic writings have been in the area of ethics, including a boring academic treatise called Critiquing Moral Arguments, logic, and popular culture. Doing their homework while Phillip was napping, Jessie and her best friend Tina overhear part of a conversation on the baby monitor. Their natural teenage curiosities aroused, they decide they have the next week to try and work out whose voices they overheard plotting to steal something.

Equal parts fun and serious, this is a lovely read. A mystery, it’s safe for teens, but also interesting enough to capture adult reader’s imaginations as well. While I found this to be a new twist on a well-done tale, it remained fresh and maintained my interest. The small town style characters were well fleshed out, and the interactions were light and realistic. This won’t appeal to readers who enjoy a deeply gritty, intricate plot, but I found there were enough twists to satisfy me and keep me turning the pages.

I enjoyed this mystery, found the narrative from a teenage girl to be a fresh perspective and the characters endearing and interesting. The story line kept me intrigued and the style of writing from the author was lighthearted, fun and well-constructed. Readers young and old will enjoy this, as will small town story fans and mystery aficionados.

Adelle Bradbury doesn’t like adventure—in books or real life. As a quiet librarian who hides behind reading glasses, she doesn’t expect to be swept into a dangerous mission to recover one of the world’s most famous lost treasures. But that’s exactly what happens when a mysterious history buff enlists her help to recover a treasure map—A map he insists is concealed in one of the library’s old books, its contents revealing the secret location of King Solomon’s missing wealth. Suddenly, mild-mannered Adelle is thrust into a world of treasure hunters, secret societies, and thieving profiteers. In a mad dash to protect the treasure, she finds a courage she never expected and something more—the possibility of true love.

Oh, that’s right, there must be some spiteful villains, a mystery to solve and, of course, a treasure to find. It’s all in these few pages. My only complaint is that I wanted the story to continue. Author Laura Briggs does a wonderful job drawing out her characters and, even though this story is short, we get a really good view of what the future holds for Adelle and Brandon.

‘Die for Him’ by Amy Valenti

She’s meant to guard his body, not to get up close and personal with it. But anything he wants, he gets—and he wants her.

Billionaires aren’t amongst Mia’s favourite clients. She’s a bodyguard, and in her experience only the morally defunct alpha males make the big bucks. So when she’s assigned to guard Dean Tremaine’s luscious body, she doesn’t expect to be more than superficially attracted to him. He’s getting death threats from disgruntled employees, after all. Why would she find him irresistible?

She might have underestimated how much she wants him, but he’s just as used to getting his own way as she expects. And when her main concern is his safety, the last thing she needs is for him to disregard her instructions, or to distract her with his provocative behaviour.

When he holds a business meeting in one of the private rooms of a local fetish club—a club he just happens to own—Mia’s ability to concentrate on her job is put to the ultimate test. She’s a newbie to the BDSM scene, and the kinky atmosphere of the club is more titillating than she’d ever have guessed. Not only that, but Dean is just as dominant sexually as he is professionally, and despite the death threats and her rejection of his advances, he seems determined to seduce her into submission.

Can Mia persuade the sexy billionaire to keep his hands off her for long enough to protect his life? Or will his reckless pursuit of her affections lead to disaster?

Reader Advisory: This book contains a heroine who won’t submit for the first time unless her billionaire proves he can control her, rough sex, nipple clamps and the devious use of a vibrator. There are also scenes of violence unrelated to the kinky fun.

This anthology gives us six different stories from different authors all centered around a woman giving their submission to the men that they love, each of which just happens to be a billionaire. Each story takes the characters on an intense ride and if you enjoy reading about submission being pushed to hard limits than this may be a book for you.

Bared to Him gives us Phillip and Myka’s story. A chance meeting and a special book brings these two together. Myka is intrigued by Philip and his rules but when he tears down her barriers too far Myka is scared away and Phillip must search inside himself for some important answers. Both Myka and Phillip are strong and independent characters and seeing them have to dig inside themselves to find the inner strength to ask for what their hearts truly want was a nice read.

In the story Made for Him, Micah has invited Teri to his special hideaway. Teri is determined to show Micah the love that she has for him and that she can take all that he can dish out. She is much stronger than he thinks and wants what he can give just as much as Micah wants to give it. Micah is afraid to show people his true Dom. It was nice to see Teri’s reaction to his enjoyment of giving pain along with pleasure.

Waiting for Him is about a loving married couple that enjoys a different lifestyle. On this particular night Shara and John have a play date. She is determined to receive more and more intense paddling and John is trying hard to give Shara what she wants but wants her to understand that using a safeword only makes you stronger not weaker. I enjoyed seeing the inner turmoil that both Shara and John go through. Their love is so strong and it shows through in all that they do.

Come to Him gives us Erin’s story. She finds a unique way to fund her schooling. Yet when she arrives at the place that is to be her home for the next month Erin begins to wonder about her choices. The man she has given herself to is so out of reach that Erin begins to doubt she can stay for the whole agreed time. Once Erin breaks past some of “Sir’s” walls things begin to change and we get to see that he may just have a heart hidden behind all those walls.

In Play to Him, Rhiannon must decide if she will take a chance on Sebastian and his love. When he asks her to play her music for him she knows he is asking for so much more than just a concert. Sebastian has found his muse and will stop at nothing to prove to Rhiannon just what she means to him. Watching Sebastian do all that he can to seduce and satisfy Rhiannon made for a sweet read.

Die for Him has bodyguard Mia trying to keep Dean safe from the death threats he has received for the big change that will take place in the companies that he owns. Dean has other things on his mind than protection from Mia. Until the threats become to real and Dean sees for himself just what danger he truly is in. The attraction between these two is hot right from the start and watching it grow into much more was a nice read.

Each of these stories brings us not only a hot read but also a romance between the two characters. I enjoyed seeing the characters find love but I found that I did not fully connect with them. It felt as if there was not enough emotions and connections with the characters themselves. The spark was there for me but I was not pulled into their stories.  However, although these stories may not be favorites for me I did enjoy many of these authors and will look for more from them in the future.

When Jeff takes himself to the Silver Dragon for his birthday, he hopes it will be everything he’s been fantasizing about. When he catches David’s eyes, he’s pretty sure he’s in for a night of leather and spanking. Will this be Jeff’s best birthday ever?

Jeff was curious about leather play and all sorts of kinky things, and so decided to try out a new BDSM club he’d read about – the Silver Dragon. Immediately attracted to the leather cuffs David Collins is wearing, he heads over to the bar for a chat when David indicates his interest. A drink quickly turns into an invitation to explore all his fantasies.

This is a lovely short story with a definite flavor of kink. Jeff’s quite innocent and very excited – this being his first time testing the waters of his darker fantasies and David is a good match for him. Their chemistry is believable and despite the quick sprint from meeting to sex I felt they did truly have a connection together. This is a hot M/M erotic piece and I really enjoyed it.

Returning from a foray into the world beyond pack lands, Shay is heartsick and skinny. His best friend Dar knows he just needs confidence, and thinks leather pants will do the trick. Shay might just the only werewolf on earth who doesn’t like leather. Is there anything Darius can do to get Shay to wear dead cow pants?

Shay had just turned up on Darius’ doorstep, completely unannounced after running away from the pack. Darius had wanted Shay seemingly forever, so this was an opportunity too good to pass up. Darius was determined to show Shay, prove to him, they were mates and perfect together. While Shay didn’t like the dead cow pants Darius kept insisting he wore, the need and attraction grew until he’d agree to anything – even wearing a pair of leather pants.

This short story is scorching hot and rather sweet at the same time. A lovely quick shot of two werewolves realizing what they had was perfect – best friends and finally lovers and mates, just as Darius had always wanted. Spicy and hot, this is an awesome quick read.

If you’re looking for a good page-turner, Up Close is for you. Ms. Gyland wasted no time in getting to the suspense. I’m a big fan of romantic suspense and this one reminded me a lot of some of the older classics of the genre written by Mary Stewart and Victoria Holt. I loved the setting and the author did such a good job describing it that I felt like I was there watching the scenes take place. If you like suspense novels set in England, and not necessary the big cities, this is one you might like to check out.

There were lots of creepy aspects to the book as well, noises in the attic at night, things seeming to be moved, and lots of people who were hiding secrets. One thing I liked was the unique hobby of the hero, that of underwater diving. Ms. Gyland obviously did lots of research on the topic and it showed in the plot.

While the heroine did sometimes seem to put herself into dangerous situations that could have been avoided, I felt this could be overlooked because the story was so well-crafted. The secondary characters were all great and fun to read about too. And although I did figure out some of the secrets the characters were keeping, I nevertheless felt compelled to read on.

After reading Up Close, I’m definitely looking forward to the author’s next book. If like me, you love curling up with a good book on a cold winter’s day, I say this one is a must read for you.

Everything is calm in Cadillac, Texas until Aunt Agnes declares war on Violet Prescott, the president of the Blue-Ribbon Jalapeño Society, just in time for the annual jubilee. But after the festivities—and the hostilities—are over, it’s four friends who are left standing, proving once again that friendship is forever.

Welcome to Cadillac, Texas, the home of the Blue-Ribbon Jalapeno Society and where the secret of growing hot jalapenos is a SECRET. A big secret, that isn’t shared with anyone. Not even the other residents…

Having diabetes is usually a probability component ronaldgreenwaldmd.com levitra without prescription for having heart failure. It helps to regain youthfulness and purchasing cialis online revive your energy levels. Ms. Brown’s story reminded me a bit of Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe by Fannie Flagg, except in this case it’s jalapenos. It’s the same kind of small town where everybody knows everyone else’s secrets and friendships are for a lifetime. She also peppers the story with some real live characters.

She gives you Violet, who runs the Jalapeno society with an iron hand. She also gives you Agnes, who comes over with a shotgun to save Trixie from a man who was assaulting her. The fact that it was her ex-husband who was over for a little Wednesday night rendezvous didn’t matter to Agnes. Then there’s the fact that Cathy finds herself marrying a nice steady man (Violet’s son) and Violet wants to run her the way she does the society.

I found all of Ms. Brown’s characters heartwarming and fun to read about. They’re all endearing in some form even if it’s just easy to hate them. She forms a central friendship between four young women that is believable and amusing. They get in trouble a lot and don’t seem to worry about it much. Independent women characters have always appealed to me. Even those who aren’t good at being independent and making their choices find out how to do that before the book ends.

I had so much fun reading this story, I’d enjoy seeing these characters in another book. Their story isn’t done yet. And love is still very confusing.
