How to handle negative criticism.
The minute you submit your manuscript/book to anyone, you are opening the door to comments and opinions. It may come from an agent, an editor, your critique partners or your reader. Some of the comments will be flattering, and complimentary, others you might find derogatory, negative, and in some cased uncalled for. The more people exposed to our work, the higher the risk we will come across someone who does not like or understand the story, or the characters, or even the entire book. How you choose to handle the input you get will determine how you progress as a writer.

To say a low rating or negative review of your work is something you can just shake off without a second thought would be a lie. If you have ever written a book, crafted something with your hands or mind, a lot of heart goes into your work. We become so involved with our characters and story that we find it hard to believe someone might not share our love for the finished product.

But that also makes it easy for us to miss important flaws in our story or style. What we see as wonderful, a reader might not. We need to step outside the emotion and take a serious look at our work. Be brutally honest. Even if we still can’t see why the person did not like our book, we need to be open to the possibility they might have a valid point. A point you need to pay attention to and perhaps try to rectify in your next novel. Using negative comments can be an author’s best ally. We should all be striving to write a better book each time we pick up a pen or sit at the keyboard.

Not everyone is going to like or understand everything they read. I have read a lot of reviews of books lately and notice there seems to be a trend in those who love a book and those who don’t. I do believe that some people are determined to find fault, especially if a book has gotten some good reviews. It appears in many reviews to be an innate need to take the author down a notch. Negative reviewers are often more vocal than those who love a book. They will sometimes leave in depth spoilers, which do in fact spoil the book for others who might read their ramblings. I have even read some lately that state the reviewer has not read the book, but has based their review on what they assume the book is about or give it stars before they have read it based on the blurb or cover.

In cases like that, I do feel the reviewer needs to be taken lightly, but there is often one thing that sticks out in the book that people mention often, and sometimes there is a good point made that the author never saw or thought about. These can be helpful in writing your next book. I take everything a person says about my book and put it into groups. Things the majority liked and things people did not. Whether I agree or not is not the point. My job is a writer is to reach the readers and provide them with several hours of enjoyment. If even one reader did not get this from my book, I have to ask why, what am I not seeing, what could I have done to explain it better.

Aside from a poor editing job, too much dialect, or style problems, I have noticed, at least with Historical Romance, repetitive plots or storylines tend to be a common complaint…too predictable, same old story, nothing surprising. The genre is hot, especially for Regency and Scottish historicals. Because of that the market has been flooded over the last couple of years and finding a new idea is getting more difficult.

Anyone can place their order online or by email or telephone and http://www.daveywavey.tv/levitra-6228.html generico cialis on line feel relaxed because Safemeds4all uses SSL technology for secure transactions to ensure customer safety. Thereafter, buy cialis see over here Kamagra was approved by FDD and it grasped the business sector as a surefire solution for ED. Another common comment in historicals is the Hero or Heroine is not likeable or the interaction between then or lack there of is not what the reader wants or expected. This partly comes from a lack of understanding on the part of the reader as to how thing actually were in the particular era. But often the author had not explained the reasons for their behavior well enough. Many readers tend to put modern values on the relationship, expect the hero to be handsome and flawless, the heroine, lovely, smart and defiant. But in a true historical, the dynamic between the couple would be very different from today. In medieval times for example, men did not view women in the same light they do now. For the most part it was common to use them as bartering tools. Women accepted their lot in life, because they did not know any different and were very unlikely to go against tradition. A hero might adore his lady, but they may be separated for long periods of time, act or react in a way, we don’t understand or even like, but if we actually lived in the period, we might understand their motive better. We cheer on the plucky heroine, yet we get frustrated if she does not conform to modern behavior.

All valid points and one the writer must address. Try to make your book unique. Find new storylines that stray from the norm. Not easy, but sometimes enough is enough. Explain the way men and women interacted so that the reader might empathize with the aloof hero torn between duty and war, and not think him a pompous ass. As for the heroine who had decided to break with tradition and stand up for herself… and without them there would be no story, just remember, it is not going to be the same as it would be in a contemporary novel. The onus is on the author to explain it without making it a boring history lesson. If you get a rejection from an editor or a negative review, use it to your advantage. Above all remember the greatest writers have negative reviews, rejection letters and criticism. You are in good company and it makes you a real writer.

Seventeen-year-old Brigid O’Flynn is an outcast. A chance encounter with the Faerie Queen left her tainted in the eyes of the villagers, who blame the Faerie for the village’s missing women and children. Desperate to win the village’s acceptance, Brigid agrees to marry her childhood friend: Serious, hardworking, Connell Mackenna. But when Connell disappears before their wedding, Brigid’s hopes are shattered. Blamed for her fiancé’s death, Brigid fears she will suffer the same fate as the other village outcasts, the mysterious Willow Women. Lured into Faerie by their inhuman lovers, and cast out weak and broken, the Willow Women spend their lives searching for the way back into Faerie. When Connell suddenly reappears, Brigid is overjoyed, but everything is not as it seems. Consumed by his desire for beauty and celebration, Connell abandons his responsibilities, and Brigid soon finds herself drawn into a passionate, dangerous world of two.

When Brigid discovers the truth behind Connell’s transformation she’s forced to choose between two men and two worlds. Brigid’s struggle leads her into glittering, ruthless Faerie, where she must rescue her true love from a terrible sacrifice or lose him forever.

To Dance in Liradon is a faery tale… not of the Disney version with fairy godmothers and dancing mice, but like the darker faery tales of Hans Christian Anderson or the Brothers Grimm. The fae are not to be trusted–as 17-year-old Brigid found out to her sorrow. As a child, she had met the Queen of the Fae after picking a flower for her mother–only to find out that keeping it came with a price–the death of her father. This was particularly hard on Brigid, for he had told her story after story about finding her true love and romance.

Shunned by the village because of her encounter with the fae, Brigid found unwanted favor from the Lord of the village. A childhood friend, Connell, proposes –to keep her safe and to help her gain acceptance from the villagers. However, even though Brigid accepts Connell’s proposal, she still wishes for the romance she has dreamed of all her life. When Connell comes back from a trip changed–romantic, attentive, loving–Brigid has won her heart’s desire–or has she?

Ms. Clarke does an admirable job presenting the dark side of fae and the appeal of giving up the daily toil for a chance at a lifetime of pleasure. In the Willow Women, she presents the alternate reality for those who have joined with the fae for a season.

There are many layers in this story of the search for true love and I highly recommend it.

As she learns to master the new feelings he’s brought to her, Zara learns how she can use it to bring even greater pleasure to herself and her husband.

Charlie’s not ready for the way Zara blows his mind anytime he’s near her. Used to controlling his life, even down to the women he takes to his bed, he’s not sure he likes losing it so completely. It takes a new kind of bravery for him to face this unexpectedly strong woman.

Zara did not realize the inner strength she had until Charlie introduced her to a life of corsets and power. The type of power that all of us women possess, but many never seem to tap into. This power is something I still cannot truly understand, so it made me root for Zara immediately. This new found womanhood and control is what she needs to in turn be able to help Charlie get past his emotional blockage–if she ever can. Or she may have to use her knew founded power to find a man who can fully appreciate the woman she was and the one she has become.

Charlie was a man who intrigued me immediately because of his emotional restraint as well as his chivalrous nature. He is always so diplomatic even when others seem to lose their cool. It made me want to understand the man behind the masks and find out what made him tick other than seeing a woman in a corset, of course. I have to say that the deeper I dove into the story and the characters the more I wanted to know. Even at the end of the story I felt as if I could continue to learn so much more about the guarded man who has achieved so much in his life.

The storyline was sometimes playful and others deadly serious. This rollercoaster of events and emotions can pique the interest of any reader. Additionally, while this was a modern day setting I had a bit of a vintage feeling to me as well. Maybe it was Zara’s fascination with vintage clothing, or Charles’ need to maintain his family’s historical views, but I could have easily have seen this story set in 1812 and easily as current day. This ability to bridge timelines really made the story even more entertaining. While many other stories I feel almost anyone can enjoy this story is truly one of those stories that everyone will find endearing and I would truly say if you enjoy romance novels you will definitely enjoy this story.

Friendly, adventurous, sexually submissive…and a complete stranger. She’s exactly the anonymous, no-consequences diversion fetish-club owner Sam needs to kick off a few days in Las Vegas. He doesn’t hesitate to take her up against the door of the in-flight bathroom.

Powerful, dominant Sam could have walked straight out of one of Melanie’s dog-eared BDSM novels. When he strikes up a conversation with her on a late-evening flight, fictional fantasies become knee-weakening, panty-soaking, feminine-core-clenching reality. And oh-em-gee, does she want another taste of that!

When Sam informs her that his plans don’t include a long-term D/s relationship with an impulsive young blonde for whom submission is more than likely a passing whim, Melanie throws herself into convincing him she is exactly the submissive lover he wants, needs and can’t live without.

Knowing what thoughts are in someone’s head is not always easy, knowing what’s in their heart is damn near impossible.

Sitting on a plane reading ‘that book’ Melanie gets herself into a bit of a pickle and sexual awareness and a state of acute arousal sends her into the toilet with the big, bad stranger sitting next to her! Joining the mile-high-club is wild and unleashes a whole load of submissive desires in her fuelled from a few sexy words and the way she’s pinned to the wall. Phew, what a way to start a trip to see your brother and his fiancé. Problem is, sex with a stranger is supposed to be exactly that, sex with a stranger – NOT your brother’s best friend!

Tangled and Bound is a good book…no, make that a really good book. Why? Because it’s unique, very well written, the characters are real and flawed and made me absolutely root for them to find happiness and satisfaction and it captured me enough to read it in one sitting –yes I ignored the chores and I don’t care.

Melanie was fun, feisty but also hot-headed, making decisions quickly and a little too spontaneously. I liked her and certainly enjoyed her journey. Although not all the choices she made would match mine, I enjoyed that the author showed me her thought process so I could relate to her chosen path.

Sam… Mmm, what’s not to love about Sam? He’s big and bad and one hell of a Dom. I adored the dialogue between the two of them, particularly Sam’s. It really showed his maleness and the way he was fighting his emotions. I also enjoyed his inner monologue which showed the reader a softer side of him right from the start, even though Melanie wasn’t privy to this.

Tangled and Bound is a great short novel, and if you have an interest in BDSM and how people become involved in the scene then it’s definitely a book for you. Emily Ryan-Davis is now on my list of ‘must read authors’.

Ted is torn between his fascination with Zoe and disbelief in her psychic talents. Unknown to both of them their past lives have brought them together and torn them apart many times. In this life they must get things sorted once and for all.

I enjoyed this book. Hamden, the watching spirit, brings humor to the grisly situation of murder. Ted seemed a little too quick to judge Zoe, especially about the paranormal visions she has. Apparently he has a reason for this but I didn’t really understand why as the meaning wasn’t revealed in any great detail.

The storyline is excellent and the highs bring in breath-holding tension to be released only when the tale slows to a moderate pace. Questions surfaced as I read further into the book. Who committed the murders? Will Zoe deny her abilities and have a happy ever after with Ted? Or will she embrace her powers and wave goodbye to non-believer Ted? The author kept me guessing until the end. Good book, scintillating story, well worth a read.

This is a deliciously scary thriller/suspense tale. It’s written in an old style, and although not explicitly stated so has the feel of a Western setting or perhaps a Frontier style piece. I quickly became used to the author’s voice and greatly enjoyed the tension and build up of what would happen to Jonathan and whether Jeremiah would be able to rescue him. It’s important to note this is only part one. While there is some resolution there isn’t a definitive ending and I hope there’s more to come, to round out the tale.

A really good, quick read.

Zeke is a writer, who spends his evenings working as a valet at The Palm Restaurant, and lusting after a particular silver BMW 3 Series and its owner. Josh is the owner of that BMW and the only thing he enjoys about his routine evenings at The Palm is the red-haired valet who parks his car. When Josh is injured in an accident at the restaurant and Zeke is volunteered to drive him home, will their time spent together result in something more – or will Zeke forever remain the nameless valet who parks Josh’s car?

Take one feisty valet, one straight-laced banker, mix in a fancy car and a long drive out to Malibu, and see what pulls up.

Zeke works as a valet for a swanky restaurant in West Hollywood, and has a major crush on the owner of a sweet BMW 3 series – Mr Tall, Blond and Handsome. So when Joshua Scott has an accident, cuts his hand on some broken glass, and Zeke’s boss insists he be driven home, Zeke is resigned to not seeing Mr TBH until the following evening. Much to Zeke’s delight, however, Joshua is the man of his dreams. Zeke drives the BMW 3 series home with orders to “see Joshua settled and comfortable – whatever he needs”. Neither man has a problem with such directives. Joshua has Zeke drive him out to his place in Malibu and the two men get to know each other much better.

This is a steamy, fast read with interesting characters and a ton of chemistry. The sex is hot and explicit, the two men totally believable and rather sweet too. No chest-beating or strutting, just two men deliciously attracted to each other and finally giving in to temptation. This is the perfect read for a short train ride or wait in the doctor’s office – something short, sharp and sizzling to pass a bit of time. I really enjoyed it and would happily read more by this author.

When Beth Murphy hears Joe is back in town, she makes sure she’s the first on his welcoming committee. Though he tries to pretend he’s gruff and unworthy of her, she sees the man who spoils his dog, who touches her like she’s precious. Cherished. But there’s one wall she can’t break down—the truth about what’s happening at home.

On the night the nature of his father’s illness becomes painfully, publicly apparent, Joe does the right thing—push Beth as far away as possible. But if he thought she’d go away quietly, he’s about to learn she’s made of sterner stuff.

Lauren Dane takes the readers back to the town of Petal, for a visit with the rowdy Murphy clan, in this sexy and entertaining story.

Joe Harris came back to his hometown to be a good son and help take care of his father. He’s changed a lot since his bad boy past. Then, sassy Beth Murphy sets her sights on the sexy mechanic. Joe tries to push her away at first. He’s got some reservations about getting involved in a relationship right now. Beth is his best friend’s little sister and that makes her off limits. And Joe knows that his dad’s health is declining fast, he knows he should keep his attention on his family. But a sexy and willing woman is hard to resist. Eventually, Joe gives in and they start burning up the sheets. But Beth is falling hard while Joe is still keeping a distance between them. Beth is stubborn and stays on his scent like a hound dog on the hunt, then just as they are getting closer, Joes private pain becomes public in a very big way. Ashamed and hurting, Joe breaks Beth’s heart when he calls things off for good. But hey, those Southern gals don’t go down easy, and Beth turns the heat up full blast. Still, a girl can only take so much rejection, and Ms. Dane had me wanting to smack Joe around some for being so darn obstinate.

Lauren Dane rocked this story like the pro that she is. As usual, she made me fall in love with her wonderful characters. She has created such endearing characters in the Murphy family and I can easily relate to them. That sense of family that she injects into her books is what gives me the warm and fuzzy feelings when I read one of them. I love all of her books, and this one is no different. It is an exceptionally compelling read, that drew me right into the story and too soon I reached the end.

Bottom line: I loved it! A very touching and romantic story.

She is a woman that can go from country girl to city girl and be competent in both, but at the same time, is the epitome of the old saying “you can take the girl from the country, but you can’t take the country from the girl”. Even though she has moved to the city and worked to become the person that her parents want her to be, her heart is still back at Promise Lodge in the wilderness of New Brunswick. After taking over the running of the lodge for a few weeks, she realizes that she still belongs there and not in the city.

And then there is the tall, dark and mysterious Travis MacDonald. He is a (recently) local resident of the area and has developed a reputation as a hermit. Thrown together by circumstance, Michaela suddenly has the opportunity to get to know him. Sparks fly, much to chagrin of both of them, which makes for some great sexual tension.

Ralph Frame is perfect as the villain that you love to hate, along with his buddy, Andy. Andy had some mildly redeeming qualities, but as much as I wanted to feel sorry for him, I just never quite got there. Michaela’s best friend, Karen, is an interesting character, as a female Ranger. I would have liked to see more of her. In fact, her character had enough potential that she could probably carry her own story quite well. And the mystery keeps you guessing. I’m usually pretty good at guessing “whodunit” in books or movies, but this one surprised me.

While the parts with the ghost add a bit more mysticism to the story, it seems really unnecessary. Those parts could be completely taken out of the story and it wouldn’t change the plot at all. I wish there would have been a little bit more to that aspect of the story or that it had been left out entirely.

I loved that there was a sled dog team. I’ve owned and raised Siberian Huskies my entire life (the original sled dog) and have owned a couple of Malamutes along the way, so it was a lot of fun for me to read about the dogs. I was a little concerned that she showed a dog eating chocolate in the book and portrayed it as a treat, because chocolate can kill dogs. I wouldn’t want any new dog owners to get ideas dangerous to their pets but portraying the dog as a kleptomaniac was funny.

Entertaining and well written, this book kept me equally trying to figure the mystery out, loving the tension between Michaela and Travis, and laughing at the antics of the dogs, with a very satisfying ending. Ghost of Winters Past is definitely worth checking out if you are in the mood for a suspenseful read with some romance along the way.
