The Lost Girls Trilogy by Cheryl Holt – Guest Blog and Giveaway

Long and Short Reviews welcomes Cheryl Holt who is celebrating the upcoming release of her Summer Trilogy. Please see the end of the post for the giveaway

My trilogy for Summer, 2020 is about my three heroines who were lost when they were tiny. They were headed to Jamaica with their parents, when their ship sunk in a storm, and they were the only survivors. They were found on a deserted island by British navy sailors and they were returned to England and handed over to various relatives. They never saw each other again, and they’ve been haunted by the tragedy they suffered when they were so small.

Libby, in Book #1, was claimed by a corrupt uncle. She was flamboyant and precocious, and he trained her for a life on the stage where, for twenty years, she’s regaled audiences with tales about the shipwreck. Caroline, in Book #2, was given to her miserly, cruel grandfather where she was abused and maligned and lived a true Cinderella existence. Joanna, in Book #3, had the only stable, happy childhood. She was raised by a kindly aunt who trained her to be a mid-wife and healer. She’s clairvoyant and knows all sorts of delicious magic that she hides from the world.

The three women are a trio of what just might be the best, most intriguing heroines I’ve created in years. They’ve lived difficult, unusual, and intriguing lives, and they’re ready to meet the men of their dreams and live happily ever after.

The 3 novels will be released on the same day, so you can read the whole series at once without having to wait for the next installment. They’ll be available both as print books and e-books. My Lost Girls trilogy! Coming August 11, 2020!

Background of the Book
The background for the book begins when I was 9. At the time I was the youngest of four children and the only boy. My oldest sister Marlene was watching the NHL Stanley Cup Finals between the Chicago Blackhawks and the Montreal Canadiens. I walked into the room and saw what was on the TV and decided to sit with her and watch. Marlene was my hero. I thought she was the smartest person alive and I found her endlessly interesting and entertaining. I loved her as much as is humanly possible for somebody to love another. She was almost seven years older than me and instead of being my sister, she was more like a second mom. If I ever did anything of note, I always wanted to show or tell her first. In return, she was my cheerleader. Always encouraging me and happy whenever I accomplished the smallest achievement. When I learned how to ride a bike she was jumping up and down and clapping like I had just won the Tour de France. I absolutely hated to disappoint her. I would rather chew glass.

While we were watching the games in 1971, I was mesmerized by the two goalies. Ken Dryden and Tony Esposito. I knew what I my life’s ambition was to be at that moment in time. I was born to be a goalie. From that time on, I didn’t want to do anything else. I lived it and breathed it. It became my obsession for the next 45 years. I wasn’t able to play ice hockey as it was very expensive, and with 5 kids to raise (my younger sister was born in September 1971) it just wasn’t a possibility. But street hockey was another matter. All my friends seemed to be in the same boat. None of them played ice hockey but loved playing street hockey. It stayed that way until I was 18 and out of high school for a year. Through a twist of fate, I was able to join a men’s recreational ice hockey team (most people refer to it as “beer league”). I didn’t even know how to skate. People would tell me that the goalie has to be the best skater on the team. Let me tell you, I was far from being the best skater. I probably was 10 years behind the second worst skater on the team. I found myself always falling backwards. Somebody would be winding up for a slapshot and I would be flat on my back waving my hands in the air. My dream was to get paid to play hockey. And behind the scenes, there was always Marlene, cheering me on.

When a boy is born (since Manon Rheaume is the only female to ever play in an NHL pre-season game, we’ll stipulate the odds are even greater for girls) and starts playing ice hockey at the age of 5 or 6, his odds of making it to the NHL are about 0.1%. I was starting at the age of 18, so the odds of me making it were astronomical, but I didn’t care. I was finally doing what I was born to do. I played whenever I could, wherever I could, with whomever I could. Someone I knew referred to me as a “hockey whore” because I would play with anyone. As years went by, I got better and better and finally realized my dream of getting paid to play hockey. I didn’t make it to the NHL, but I got close enough. I met a lot of amazing people.

Best part is, I got to tell Marlene all about it. She was so proud of me. The worst part is, she only got to see me play one time. She had always planned on seeing me play more often, but our schedules just never seemed to jive. Marlene passed away on August 12th, 2005 from cancer. It is the toughest thing I have ever had to deal with. For the next five years, the grief was always with me, just below the surface, and I always felt that I could break down at any time. Whenever I played after that, I was hoping that she was watching and that she was proud of me. My book is, in part, dedicated to my big sister Marlene. She is, and always will be, my hero.

Jerry Hack

Memoir of a Hockey Nobody is the unlikely true story of an average Canadian kid who grew up playing street hockey. Although he didn’t learn how to skate until his late teens, he took a shot at entering the world of professional ice hockey with, shall we say, haphazard results.

This is an “against all odds” tale of one man’s journey from Vancouver, to all over Western Canada, California, The Yukon, and Alaska. Seemingly blocked at every turn, from managers who believed that someone who came from such humble beginnings couldn’t be any good, to coaches who would rather see big names with bigger reputations. It’s a story of tragedy, triumph and determination. A roller coaster ride with hilarious anecdotes of all the characters he met along the way.

This is a tale for those who dare to live their dream!

In the spring of 1980, the New York Islanders won the Stanley Cup, beating the Philadelphia Flyers in 6 games. Bob Nystrom scored the Stanley Cup winning goal in overtime. I was happy, because finally someone other than the Montreal Canadiens won the cup. Despite rooting for the Canadiens when I was nine, I had grown to hate them. I was a diehard Vancouver Canucks fan by then. The Canadiens just kept on winning and winning. I was so tired of watching them win all the time. four straight years they won the cup without breaking a sweat. Little did I know that the Islanders were now on their way to doing the exact same thing. I would grow to hate them too. It was about a month after the Islanders had their first parade that I was over at the Aitken’s house. John and I still hung out, but not as often as in the past. At this time, I was eighteen and had my own vehicle, (a 1969 Datsun pickup). We were discussing how happy we both were that the Montreal dynasty was seemingly over, when the topic of his hockey team came up. He was always playing in one beer league or another. (At one time he played in the N.H.L. The “Natural Hockey League”) At this time he was playing on a team called the Burnaby Kings, and they were playing at the Columbian 4 Rinks. At one time, this was the largest indoor hockey arena in the world, and was even in the Guinness Book of World Records. As it turned out, the Kings were renting one of the rinks once a week, all summer long. Summer hockey was a new thing, all the other rinks became lacrosse rinks for the summer. John was telling me how terrible their goalie was. The guy’s name was Lonnie. I don’t remember his last name. John was telling me that the guy was the worst goalie he had ever played with. They had nicknamed him “Red Light Lonnie,” because he would let in so many goals. He said that Lonnie was so short that shots would regularly hit him in the head and deflect into the net. One time John said that the puck had been shot into the corner and Lonnie went to go get it, fell down, and while he was trying to get up, the puck went up on edge and had such spin on it after it hit the boards, that it reversed itself and curved right into the net. John said Lonnie was like “Bad Luck Schleprock” of the Flintstones.

About the Author: I was born and raised in Burnaby, British Columbia. My sisters and I were raised by hard-working blue collar parents. We were and are a tight knit family. I grew up loving sports but hockey most of all. In fact, it was my passion. I read about it, watched it and played it. I was an average student and a good athlete. I could play most sports without looking out of place. But I was born to be a goalie. I graduated from high school in 1979 and a year later began my journey playing ice hockey. 40 years later, I am happily married with a 12 year old daughter and loving life more than ever.

Addie’s always admired Jude from afar. Now he’s right in front of her.

I found the premise of Adeline’s Aria extremely intriguing. Meeting a celebrity crush is something many people dream about, and I couldn’t wait to find out what happened when Addie not only met Jude but also began a secret relationship with him!

Addie is a very likable character. As a young woman on the cusp of graduating from high school, she’s still trying to work out what her next step will be. Does she go to college? Pursue her love of photography? Both? Addie is smart, talented, and completely devoted to her family and friends, but what I like most about her, is how real she is. Sometimes she’s totally confident and has it all together. At other times, she’s a mess who needs the comfort of her mom and her best friend. She’s doesn’t have it all figured out, and that’s okay. When Jude comes crashing into her life, Addie is understandably swept off her feet, but through it all, she stays true to herself. I admire her quite a bit.

Jude is definitely a rock star. He’s talented, attractive, and I love the description of his tattoos. I also love the fact that (Un)Lost by The Maine is on his playlist! However, there is more to Jude than his on-stage persona. He’s a regular guy who is sweet and kind but also has faults and family drama. I will say that his occupation does seem to amplify some of his problems quite a bit. While Jude loves his work, he’s also trapped by it to a certain extent. Everything he does is scrutinized by the public. I admire his resilience in being able to live in the spotlight and not completely lose himself.

I love how Addie and Jude meet! I can’t say much without spoiling the story, but I will say this. It could have gone horribly wrong, but Addie handled herself extremely well. I can only hope if I find myself in a similar situation, I’m as cool under pressure as Addie was. From the moment they meet, they certainly have chemistry, but I do think their relationship moves a bit too fast. After spending a few hours together, things start to get pretty serious. Jude is very open with Addie from the start, which I like, but his life moves at a different pace, and Addie soon finds herself out of her depth. Consequently, Addie and Jude often find themselves at odds as they try to figure out how to have a serious adult relationship. I found myself wishing they would just slow down and have an honest conversation. Despite this issue, I have a lot of hope for Addie and Jude’s future.

I enjoyed reading Adeline’s Aria. The relationship drama was intense at times, but the ending made it all worthwhile. I look forward to finding out what comes next in this series!

Laura A. Barnes is one of my favorite authors. Every time one of her books appears to review, I’m quick to request it. I’ve read all the books in the Tricking the Scoundrels series. Each one can be read as a standalone but I’d never recommend reading just one. That would be like eating one bite of your favorite dessert. That’s practically a criminal act in my mind!

The synopsis is descriptive therefore if this book sounds appealing to you then I highly suggest reading it. I couldn’t put it down. I long awaited to read Kathleen and Devon’s love story. It didn’t disappoint. Their romance made me want to swoon. Their chemistry was sin worthy. I was delirious when I reached the end of the story and found an epilogue. I couldn’t get enough and wanted more. In fact I felt triumphant when I found out that there is going to be a fifth book! I’m not ready for this cast of characters’ stories to be concluded. I was euphoric when I read that book five will be Belle’s story. Who will be the mystery man that broke her heart? Surely it will be a scoundrel but which one? I haven’t a clue. I have to wait until September.

I’d like to thank Laura A. Barnes for writing wonderful books to escape reality. Everyone has trials and tribulations in life and it’s a blessing when you can depend on a certain author to write a book that allows the reader to find a few hours of enjoyment. I look forward to reading the next story in the series.

WRITING THE NICKY AND NOAH MYSTERIES by Joe Cosentino – Guest Blog and Giveaway

Long and Short Reviews welcomes back Joe Cosentino who is here to visit with us today to celebrate the recent release of the 10th book in his Nicky and Noah series, Drama Runway. Post a comment about why you love models. The one that sends us down the runway will win a gift Audible code for the audiobook of Drama Queen, the first Nicky and Noah mystery, by Joe Cosentino, performed by Michael Gilboe!

WRITING THE NICKY AND NOAH MYSTERIES

When I decided that my life as a college theatre professor was so full of mystery, humor, and romance that I had to write a book about it, I never thought it would turn into a cozy murder mystery novel. I also never imagined the novel, Drama Queen, would be voted Favorite LGBT Mystery Novel of the Year by the readers of Divine Magazine and be so incredibly popular with readers. Even more shocking was that Drama Queen spawned the very much-loved Nicky and Noah mystery series winning many Rainbow Award Honorable Mentions with Drama Runway (book 10!) releasing August 1!

For those of you who haven’t yet ventured to the land of Nicky and Noah (and you should!), it’s a gay cozy mystery comedy series, meaning the setting is warm and cozy, the clues and murders (and laughs) come fast and furious, and there are enough plot twists and turns and a surprise ending to keep the pages turning (as Nicky would say) “faster than a priest lassoing an altar boy with his rosary beads.” At the center is the touching relationship between Professor of Play Directing Nicky Abbondanza and Associate Professor of Acting Noah Oliver. We watch them go from courting to marrying to adopting a child, all the while head over heels in love with each other (as we fall in love with them). Reviewers called the series “hysterically funny farce,” “Murder She Wrote meets Hart to Hart meets The Hardy Boys,” and “captivating whodunits.” One reviewer wrote they are the funniest books she’s ever read! Another said I’m “a master storyteller.” Who am I to argue?

In Drama Queen Nicky directs the school play at Treemeadow College—which is named after its gay founders, Tree and Meadow. Theatre professors drops like stage curtains, and Nicky and Noah use their theatre skills, including impersonating other people, to figure out whodunit. In Drama Muscle Nicky and Noah don their gay Holmes and Watson personas again to find out why bodybuilding students and professors in Nicky’s bodybuilding competition at Treemeadow are dropping faster than barbells. In Drama Cruise it is summer on a ten-day cruise from San Francisco to Alaska and back. Nicky and Noah must figure out why college theatre professors are dropping like life rafts as Nicky directs a murder mystery dinner theatre show onboard ship starring Noah and other college theatre professors from across the US. Complicating matters are their both sets of wacky parents who want to embark on all the activities on and off the boat with the handsome couple. In Drama Luau, Nicky is directing the luau show at the Maui Mist Resort and he and Noah need to figure out why muscular Hawaiian hula dancers are dropping like grass skirts. Their department head/best friend and his husband, Martin and Ruben, are along for the bumpy tropical ride. In Drama Detective Nicky is directing and ultimately co-starring with his husband Noah as Holmes and Watson in a new musical Sherlock Holmes play at Treemeadow College prior to Broadway. Martin and Ruben, their sassy office assistant Shayla, Nicky’s brother Tony, and Nicky and Noah’s son Taavi are also in the cast. Of course dead bodies begin falling over like hammy actors at a curtain call. Once again Nicky and Noah use their drama skills to figure out who is lowering the street lamps on the actors before the handsome couple get half-baked on Baker Street. In Drama Fraternity Nicky is directing Tight End Scream Queen, a slasher movie filmed at Treemeadow College’s football fraternity house, co-starring Noah, Taavi, and Martin. Rounding out the cast are members of Treemeadow’s Christian football players’ fraternity along with two hunky screen stars. When the jammer, wide receiver, and more begin fading out with their scenes, Nicky and Noah once again use their drama skills to figure out who is sending young hunky actors to the cutting room floor before Nicky and Noah hit the final reel. In Drama Castle Nicky is directing a historical film co-starring Noah and Taavi at Conall Castle in Scotland: When the Wind Blows Up Your Kilt It’s Time for A Scotch. Rounding out the cast are members of the mysterious Conall family who own the castle. When hunky men in kilts topple off the drawbridge and into the mote, it’s up to Nicky and Noah to use their acting skills to figure out whodunit before Nicky and Noah land in the dungeon. In Drama Dance during rehearsals of The Nutcracker ballet at Treemeadow, muscular dance students and faculty cause more things to rise than the Christmas tree. When cast members drop faster than Christmas balls, Nicky and Noah once again use their drama skills, including impersonating other people, to figure out who is trying to crack the Nutcracker’s nuts, trap the Mouse King, and be cavalier with the Cavalier before Nicky and Noah end up in the Christmas pudding. In Drama Faerie, Nicky and friends are doing a musical production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream at Treemeadow’s new Globe Theatre. With an all-male, skimpily dressed cast and a love potion gone wild, romance is in the starry night air. When hunky students and faculty in the production drop faster than their tunics and tights, Nicky and Noah use their drama skills to figure out who is taking swordplay to the extreme before Nicky and Noah end up foiled in the forest.

Now in the tenth novel, Drama Runway, Nicky is directing a fashion show for the Fashion Department at Treemeadow showcasing the new black leather line by famous fashion designer Ulla Ultimate of Ultimate Fashion (FU for short). The visiting professor’s rebellious son, Treemeadow fashion student Cory Ultimate, is featured as one of the models. The other hot and hunky male student models are feuding exes Shane Buff and Julio Bonero as well as picked upon plus-size model Cosmo Capra. To keep peace in the family (and arsenic out of his oatmeal), Nicky has also cast his handsome husband Noah and their adopted son Taavi as models in the show. Of course Nicky’s best friends, Theatre Department Head Martin Anderson and his long suffering spouse Ruben, are producers, with office assistant Shayla Johnson on hand to supply sassy remarks (Try saying that three times fast and not spraying someone’s face). Nicky’s droll nemesis, Detective Manuello, and Nicky and Noah’s both sets of riotous parents are also along for the rocky ride.

As rehearsals for the show begin, Nicky is “happier than a conservative politician and a Russian spy rigging an election.” However, Nicky finds out quickly the runway is a dangerous place as sexy male models drop faster than their leather chaps. Nicky and Noah use their drama skills to figure out who is taking the term “a cut male model” literally before the couple end up steamed in the wardrobe steamer.

Added to the colorful cast of characters are Lila Hekekia, a fashion design student screaming for “religious freedom” as she eyes Ulla’s show for herself. Lila’s pursuit takes a spin when she finds out her current squeeze, Associate Professor of Fashion Design Tyler Greenway, had a questionable past with Ulla. Accident-prone fashion student, Johnny Riley, has a secret known only to muscular stage-managing student, Hoss Packer. Businessman Miles Jeffrey has been hired by Ulla to find a husband for Cory, in hopes that her son will finally settle down. Miles finds it to be a difficult task given Cory’s penchant for throwing himself at the other male models. As passions and tempers explode, once again Nicky, Noah, and friends use their theatrical skills to trap the murderer in a shocking climax—no pun intended.

It is my joy and pleasure to share this tenth novel in the series with you. So take your seats. The runway lights are flashing, the music is pulsating, and the models are ready to make their entrance. Curtain up on the ultimate in fashion, and of course hilarity, romance, and murder!

It’s spring break at Treemeadow College, and theatre professor Nicky Abbondanza is directing a runway show for the Fashion Department. Joining him are his spouse, theatre professor Noah Oliver, their son Taavi, and their best friend and department head, Martin Anderson. The show, designed by visiting professor Ulla Ultimate, is bound to be the ultimate event of the season. And bound it is with designs featuring black leather and chains. When sexy male models drop faster than their leather chaps, Nicky and Noah will need to use their drama skills to figure out who is taking the term “a cut male model” literally before Nicky and Noah end up steamed in the wardrobe steamer. You will be applauding and shouting Bravo for Joe Cosentino’s fast-paced, side-splittingly funny, edge-of-your-seat entertaining tenth novel in this delightful series. Take your seats. The runway is lighting up with hunky models, volatile designers, bitter exes, newfound lovers, and murder!

Ulla explained, “Cory, I certainly understand that young people need to…play the field. I did some of that myself when I was in college. But those who play into overtime generally find themselves losing the game.”

Taavi scratched his dark hair. “I don’t understand.”

“You don’t need to.” Martin waved Ulla on, salivating at the prospect of getting some new gossip. “We’re listening.”

“You think I don’t care about you? You’re wrong. I’ve been quite concerned about your antics.” Ulla continued as if a judge reaching a verdict. “Cory, you’ve sown enough wild oats to make oatmeal to feed a third world nation. I thought long and hard about what to do about it. Here is my decision. I’ve given Miles the task of finding you a husband. Hopefully someone as responsible as Noah.”

I pulled Noah into me and asked Miles, “How will you accomplish your task?”

“Ulla has told me a great deal about Cory. I also plan to interview him myself.” Miles’ long finger moved charts around a handheld computer tablet. “I’m seeking the perfect ying to Cory’s yang.”

Ruben glanced over at Cory’s bulging crotch. “He has quite a yang.”

Martin pushed his shoulder. “Which you’ll never see.”

Ulla continued. “Miles will interview all the single, young, gay men here at Treemeadow during spring break, until he finds the perfect mate for my son.”

“And if he doesn’t?” Martin licked his full red lips.

Ulla unveiled a plastic white smile. “He will.”

Cory glared at his mother. “We’re not Moonies. You can’t arrange a marriage for me!”

“No, but I can cut off every cent that goes to you now and after I’m dead, if you don’t agree to date whomever Miles selects for you.”

Cory’s face hardened. “Are you sure you want to do that, Mother?”

“Positive.”

Norman Bates anyone?

Cory stumbled backward a few steps. After regrouping, he approached Miles. “You’re not hooking me up with some dweeb.”

Miles offered a thin smile. “I plan to follow your mother’s orders and find the right man for you.”

“All right.” Cory played along. “I like hot, dangerous guys with a wild streak.” Cory’s dimples looked like craters. “You want to know about me? Here’s my motto. I think of men like pancakes. You flip the first one over to warm your griddle and prepare you for the whole stack.”

That gives new meaning to ‘a hot man.’

Miles came pointy nose to wide nose with him. “Get some rest, little boy. I’m starting my interviews tomorrow. Your mom wants you to settle down. So settle down.”

“You can’t tell me what to do.”

“We’ll see about that. I think you’ve met your match, Cory. Goodnight, gentlemen.” Miles led Ulla through the side door into the lobby and out of the theatre.

THOMAS PINKERTON PAINE JOINS THE FIRST DIVISION—APRIL 1918
“OVER THERE”—George M. Cohan

Thomas left on a troopship for France. He stayed on deck the entire time, except for meals, to minimize his contact in a closely packed ship. One of his goals was to return to his family by avoiding the diseases so easily contracted in war zones. He arrived in St. Nazaire, France, and was rapidly transported in a second-class passenger coach, while enlisted men rode in boxcars.

Thomas arrived at the front at a time that the First Division was the only fully trained American division in France. They had already lost a disproportionate number of junior officers in their first operational missions. Thomas was immediately assigned as a platoon leader in the 1/26th. He had been in France for less than one month, but he was about to engage in his first combat mission. The mission was to capture the town of Cantigny and the surrounding high ground.

On May 27, 1918, the division moved into its attack positions, and the next morning commenced their attack on the German positions in and around Cantigny. As the First Division advanced, German machine-gunners delivered heavy fire, killing three officers in Company A. The advance halted, while the advance party was pinned down. Until the machine guns were taken out, the First Division could not move. Second Lt. Paine gathered five volunteers, all armed with automatic rifles and grenades.

Thomas had this exact tactical problem while he trained in Ithaca. He had his remaining men deliver heavy fire on the machine gun positions, while his team pulled back and circled the Germans’ flank. They advanced slowly, then charged the bunkers, using their grenades first. When the grenades flushed out those who were not dead, the men fired their automatic rifles, killing the rest of the gunners and their support. Thomas’ and his men’s heroism would be recognized after the battle—if they were still alive.

Eric’s day is off to a rough start: his regional managers are in town, he’s running late to work, the moon seems to be falling apart, and he just can’t seem to get his tie right. At least he has his priorities straight: it’s the little things that matter. The world may be plunging into chaos, the neighborhood children might be mutating into abominations, but that doesn’t mean he can let his standards slip. If he and his co-workers can survive their nightmare walk to the office, then Eric has a plan for success…

Bizarre doesn’t even begin to describe what’s happening here, but that’s a good thing!

Eric didn’t react like most characters do in horror stories. While he acknowledged that there were some very bizarre and terrifying things happening in this neighborhood, he was so concerned about getting a promotion that he consciously chose to ignore them. I was so hung up on his weird reaction that I couldn’t wait to find out why even the sight of children mutating into things that never should have existed wasn’t enough to shake him out of the stupor he seemed to be in from the very first sentence. This is the sort of mind-boggling twist to normal human behavior that makes me yearn to learn more.

I would have liked to see some time spent explaining exactly what was going on with the moon and how it was affecting all of the scary things happening on Earth. As much as I enjoy coming up with my own theories about the science in science fiction, it sure would have been nice to have a little direction from the narrator about how all of these events were connected.

The gore fit the tone of the tale nicely, especially later on as the world continued to disintegrate and Eric realized that his block wasn’t the only place that had erupted into chaos by far. I do tend to be a little squeamish about that corner of this genre, but I thought the gory sections were written well and were completely appropriate for the subject matter.

Anyone who loves horror and dark science fiction should give Everything’s Fine a try.

HOW MUCH IS A LIFE WORTH? WHEN THE WORLD DEMANDS AN ANSWER WE ALL SCRAMBLE TO FIND ONE.

My name is Midnight Thunder. The town crazy person; the Demon Eyes girl. The girl whose existence rests on a curse that saves her from death yet sets her on a path to an inevitable end.

I live in a world full of magic: spells, curses, enchantments, and everything in between. It would be a whimsical place, but, like anything, it’s imperfect. Little by little, my own country has begun to fall apart beneath its own mistakes. The queen’s gone a little bit more than mad, our military has collapsed, and of course, the only way to break the deadly curse at the root of it all is to sacrifice… me.

Midnight Thunder is just a girl who wants a simple life, and her picture of happiness is just a tree where she and her brother Black used to spend a lot of time together. But can her “Demon Eyes” that have been the reason for her isolation from society, suddenly become the solution to her finding true happiness? The Midnight Before Me seeks to answer the age-old question, “What makes life worth living?”

The plot of this story is so emotionally driven for a group of main characters that would have you believe they have given up hope on finding their meaning. This emotion powers through and pushes our characters together, making the anticipation for things to come truly agonizing when it comes time to finally put down the book and go to sleep.

Each chapter gives us the perspective of a different character, which brings the story such energy and depth, helping the readers be in two places at once and worrying about outcomes for all of the characters involved rather than just Midnight.

Lafayette is a troubled soldier, but the interactions between him and Midnight fill the novel with a warm life that would be missing otherwise. Their unspoken bond connects the readers to the story, and gives new meaning to “It’s not the destination, it’s the journey.”

Midnight and Lafayette live in an entirely unique fantasy world of magicians and non-magical beings that is put together in a way I have never seen before in the world of Fantasy. Each of these qualities act as interchanging parts that bring suspense to the reader making them question how every aspect fits into the story.

Desperate for a happy outcome The Midnight Before Me was written so thoughtfully by Elizabeth Lo that it has me caring for each character and wondering what their lives are like after the end of the novel.

This is an excellent story for young adults and children alike, filled with lessons of finding one’s true purpose, living life to the fullest, and not being afraid of the things that make us different. It is in these qualities where our true power lies, and as an adult I am thankful to have been reminded of their importance in my life. You will not regret picking up a copy for yourself and letting Midnight Thunder show you that it should not take death to teach you how to live.

She’s investigating the mystery of an escaped convict with brooding, handsome newspaper editor Lane Cox…until they must pretend to be engaged! With their scoop linked to Lane’s tragic past, dare Patsy hope for a happy ending for their own story, too?

I love when I get the opportunity to begin a new series. Lauri Robinson is one of my favorite authors. The synopsis sounded unique. I haven’t come across many books written during the roaring twenties and I find this setting appealing. I appreciated the author’s list of slang words and phrases that were popular during that time period prior to the start of the story especially because it made me feel like I was back in that time era. Most of the words and phrases on the list were new to me and fun to learn. One of the reasons that Lauri Robinson is one of my favorite authors is because of her natural ability to write books with a realistic feeling. She consistently has a way of bringing a reader into the story with her attention to detail.

I can also testify to the consistency of the author’s writing skills for providing a cast of characters that are relatable and easy to bond with. This is not my first series by Lauri Robinson. The three sisters presented to the reader in this series were easy to connect with. The only character that I disliked was the father, Mr. Dryer. However, I get how it is necessary for him to be written as he is for he causes the conflict. I hope his demeanor will soften by the end of the series but I suspect it won’t. With having said that, it’s an example of how the book is unpredictable. The reader is taken on an adventure with a creative and twisting plot.

Patsy, the heroine, and Lane, the hero, kick of the series and they made for a great start. Their chemistry was thick in the air but innocent. I’d consider this to be a sweet/spicy romance. I loved Patsy’s spunk and Lane’s seriousness. Patsy brought out Lane’s fun side. Together they complete each other. I love how Lane was supportive of Patsy’s dream.

The story started with an attention gripper that hooked me and kept me turning pages until the end. I loved how there was an epilogue. I was left with feeling of glee and a definite book glow.

After reading this book, I am eager to read the next one in the series. I’m not sure which sister will be next but I can’t wait for each of them to have their own happily ever after.

If you are looking for a series to start then why not give this one a try?
