A sweet story for a slow afternoon.

I’m a sucker for the works of CH Admirand. The author has a way with words. In a few lines, I end up drawn into the story. I couldn’t put this one down. Granted, it’s a short story, but worth the hour or so read.

Margaret wants to save her father. He’s in trouble and she can’t let him get in deeper. Lord Avery spots an intruder on his property and takes matters into his own hands. Their story is rather simple, but Admirand adds special twists to keep the tale fresh.

It’s a sweet book and ends at just the right moment. I couldn’t ask for more–other than for the story to be longer so I can spend more time with these characters.

There are scenes of forced sex but the author has mentioned it without going into the details.

The book has a classic plot since Jaime is the distressed/submissive mate that needs saving and Franco is the protector. There were alternate time changes from present to past. It did give a better understanding with the story.

Jaime may be physically weak and may need Franco’s protection and strength but out of both of them Jaime is the most mentally strong one. Jaime was his to protect. But will he forgive Franco for leaving him? The author showed their relationship, at the best and worst and seeing them come out on top of all of this is the best feeling. It had a happy ending that is worth reading.

Vacations by Andrew Grey – Guest Blog

Long and Short Reviews welcomes Andrew Grey who is visiting with us to celebrate the recent release of The Best Worst Honeymoon Ever.

*****
Dominic and I love to travel. In the winter, we go on a cruise in order to get away from the cold. In summer we like to take a trip together. We try to make each of these vacations special. When we’re in the Caribbean, Dominic loves to snorkel. (I’m less of a fan, but I go with him because doing anything with Dominic is fun for me.) One of our favorite places for water sports of any kind is Bonaire. Much of the offshore areas of the island are protected so the reefs, coral, and sponges, as well as abundant sea life make the island spectacular. So when it came time for me to write Honeymoon, I turned to Bonaire as a place I’d very much like to go. Heck I’m thinking that maybe I should take Dominic there for a second honeymoon. Hmmm… I just plot bunnied myself. Maybe there’s a story there. 🙂

How can heartbreak turn into happily ever after?

Tommy Gordon is all set for happily ever after—until heartbreak strikes when his husband-to-be leaves him at the altar. In a bid for distraction, his best friend, Grayson Phillips, suggests he takes advantage of the luxury honeymoon anyway! But the last thing Tommy wants is to go alone, so he invites Grayson and his son, Petey, along.

Beautiful Bonaire lends itself to romance, and along with close quarters, relaxing on the water, and a matchmaking kid, Tommy and Grayson soon find themselves closer than ever… and considering more, much to Grayson’s delight. But before they can plan the best best honeymoon ever, dark clouds descend in the form of Tommy’s ex and a sting from paradise that could ruin everything.

“I’ll be fine, Mom. All I want is to be left alone so I can cry like an eight-year-old where no one can see me.” Tommy was trying to be lighthearted but knew it fell flat. “Just go and have some fun, eat lots, and for God’s sake, make sure everyone has a good time.”

“If you say so, dear.” She patted his cheek, and Tommy hugged both of them before getting them out the door. As soon as he closed it, he heard the beeps and squawks of the game in the other room.

“You should go and have dinner with everyone else,” Tommy told Grayson.

“Petey is having the time of his life. He loves your television. That thing is so massive, he thinks he’s getting lost in the game. If you want to go on up and lie down, I’ll stay down here with him.”

“Whatever you want. Eat anything in the refrigerator. Not that there’s very much. I suppose I’ll need to get food now.” Tommy’s head throbbed. “I was supposed to leave on my honeymoon in four days, so there isn’t much, but help yourself to whatever there is.”

“What are you going to do?” Grayson asked.

“Your trip,” he answered, stepping closer.

“I’ll probably cancel everything and just stay home. I can work and try to take my mind off this whole awful mess.”

Grayson shook his head. “You should go anyway. Why let him ruin a perfectly good vacation? It’s been too long since you took some time away, and it would let you get out of town and away from anyone who knows about what happened.”

Tommy’s shoulders slumped even further. He wasn’t sure if he was up for anything at all. The thought of crawling into a cave to hide was overwhelmingly inviting. “I sure as hell don’t want to spend an entire week alone.” He leaned forward, leveraging himself to his feet. “I can cancel most of the plans and take the hit on the others.” Tommy shuffled toward the stairs, almost too tired—and maybe a little drunker than he thought—to lift his feet. “Unless you and Petey want to come.”

“He has school, and….”

Tommy looked over his shoulder. “I could say the same thing to you that you just did to me. You don’t take vacations either, and I have everything paid for. I could check into having Xavier’s ticket transferred or see if there are others available. I have a suite at the resort, so there’s plenty of room.” He yawned. “Think about it.”

He climbed the stairs, went right to his bedroom, and closed the door. He stripped off his clothes and got into bed, pulling the covers over his head. Then and only then did he let his emotions loose and cry the way he’d wanted to for hours.

Zoraida Grey and Cancer the Crab by Sorchia Dubois

Long and Short Reviews welcomes Sorchia Dubois who is celebrating the release of her newest book Zoraida Grey and the Voodoo Queen. Enter the Rafflecopter at the end of the post for a chance to win a beautiful, hand-crafted tree of life birthstone pendant—and a bunch of books.

Zoraida Grey and Cancer the Crab

I’m celebrating a book release!!! Zoraida Grey and the Voodoo Queen is the second book in a Gothic fantasy trilogy I’ve been working on for a couple of years. Not only that, but the last book in the trilogy is almost ready to send to the editor which means the entire series will be out of my hands soon. Getting this series finished is a big deal for me and I’ve decided to spend the rest of 2018 in party mode—well, except for the time I’ll be working on the next book but we don’t need to let that spoil a good celebration.

Zoraida Grey is a small-town fortune teller who has a nice, comfortable life in a quiet, out-of-the-way place in Arkansas. She runs a little natural food shop where she dispenses yogurt, healthy snacks, and a little weed. She’s not looking to make any changes. But her witchy Granny has other plans.

Tarot cards and astrology are second nature to Zoraida and I thought it would be fun to talk about astrology and how the signs of the Zodiac relate to some of the characters in the series. Visit my Witchmageddon page on my website to see what signs and cards relate to other characters in the series.

Zoraida was born under the sign of Cancer the Crab. She’s protective, nurturing, and a little unhinged.

Cancers are guided by the Moon and can be moody and changeable. They often develop a crustacean-like shell to protect themselves. It’s hard to get to know a Cancer when she’s got her defenses built. They tend to be tenacious, protecting friends and family—no matter what!! If you are in their clan, they’ll support you with ferocity. If you threaten their clan—well, let’s just say that’s a bad idea. They can be brutal if needs be. They will do whatever it takes!

Kathy Bates is a Cancer—maybe that’s why she was so convincing in Misery. Meryl Streep, Helen Keller, and Liv Tyler are Cancers. So is Malala Yousafzai. So was Princess Diana. Angela Merkel, The 14th Dalai Lama, and Nelson Mandela must epitomize the best of the sign. But Cancers also include Lizzie Bordon (who may or may not be guilty of axe-related mayhem), Machine Gun Kelly, and John Dillinger—along with O.J. Simpson and Bill Cosby.

By some accounts, Cancers are arrested for criminal behavior more than any other sign. Cancers tend to be jealous, so this story goes, and commit crimes of passion. Supposedly, the FBI did a study—but I can’t find any corroboration for that claim. If they haven’t, they certainly need to. If someone you know is a Cancer, you have been warned. If, dear reader, you happen to be a Cancer. . . Let’s hear what you think –and I ask in the most respectful manner possible.

PSST—as part of the book launch party, I’m giving away a beautiful, hand-crafted tree of life birthstone pendant—and a bunch of books. Enter the giveaway below or on my website.

Magic may save Zoraida’s skin, but what about her heart?

Zoraida Grey needs help. With the witchy Logan clan holding her best friend hostage in a haunted Scottish castle, she can’t trust anyone—certainly not beguiling but dangerous Shea Logan. And Al, her overprotective boyfriend, doesn’t believe in magic.

Only one creature strikes fear in the blackened hearts of the Logan witches. Trouble is Jock disappeared five centuries ago leaving a trail of destruction across the Gulf of Mexico. Now he’s stepped into a steaming pile of Voodoo.

Can Zoraida drag wayward Jock back to Scotland? And what’s she supposed to do with two men who promise completely different futures?

A Scottish wizard, stripped naked and painted blue—a Voodoo priestess bent on immortality—a yacht-load of Caribbean pirates. What can possibly go wrong?

A proud member of the Scottish Ross clan, Sorchia incorporates all things Celtic (especially Scottish) into her works. She can often be found at Scottish festivals watching kilted men toss large objects for no apparent reason.

People are disappearing off the streets of San Francisco, victims of the same underground trade that targeted her, and Allye could be the key to dismantling the entire operation. The story has a lot of pulling together, falling apart and secrets being dragged out. Cam’s son adds a bit of levity to the story, but also heartache when he appears to bond with his father. This is a nice romance story with lots of tension although some of it seems a little over the top. Still, I enjoyed reading it.

Max’s a renowned artist and Pete’s a successful and cocky divorce lawyer. Their friends envy them, except their marriage is a sham, a fake arrangement. When a car accident shatters all the lies they’d built over the years, will Max turn tail and run away, or see the chance of a lifetime?

The moment Pete opens his eyes in the hospital room, he instantly hates the massive surgical scar across his chest. It’s a reminder of his mistake, his sin, because Max might have forgotten but he was the one at the wheel that night. When fate offers them a second chance to make their marriage real, will Pete be brave enough to right his wrongs?

While having a bitter and jealous argument, Max and Pete were involved in a car crash, leaving Pete in a coma and Max unable to do his art – his only real passion. When Pete finally wakes up, everything has changed. Can Max and Pete turn their fake marriage into something real?

I found the start of this story a little disorientating. It starts in the middle of a fight while Max and Pete are driving home, slightly drunk and both angry and then the car accident happens. I personally struggled a little to understand exactly what was going on in the situation the story had opened up into. Even understanding that their marriage was a sham Max seemed to genuinely dislike his husband (Max even uses the words “hate” in his thoughts in relation to Pete) and the argument is quite bitter. I didn’t really grasp why – if there was so much tension and anger built up between the two men – they had continued on as long as they did. I also didn’t really feel there was a solid explanation why Max didn’t leave Pete all those weeks Pete was in a coma. For me, personally, the opening and first chapter or so were quite confusing and it took me a lot longer than normal to really get into the characters and story itself.

As the story progressed, however, a lot of the relationship dynamics are explained. I found the rest of this story an interesting and complicated discovery of how Pete and Max’s relationship not only began and reached the point we started at on page 1, but also how they each could discover a way to move forward. I have to admit a part of me didn’t find Pete and Max’s relationship very healthy – certainly, in my opinion, it’s not a traditional “romantic” relationship. But Pete and Max were both fully capable, grown men, and discovering why they stayed with each other, and how they came to rely on the other and their relationship was a very different and interesting read. As they’re both recovering from the accident for most of the story there’s not a lot of physical romance between the men, this story focuses more on the two men’s personalities and the relationship itself, which I thought was a good thing. I feel that had the author adding sex into the mix between them both it could have been slightly too charged and I partly feel that would have only added to my confusion and the murkiness of the men’s relationship.

Readers looking for an intense and deeply relationship-centric style of story – or possibly a hurt/comfort style of story – should find this a good read. I did find it different to the usual romance story and aside from being quite confused initially I enjoyed it. This is definitely a “slow burn” sort of romance and while Pete and Max do become intimate right near the end there isn’t a lot of physical romance between the men – this is more about the relationship itself and Max and Pete coming to terms with their new situation in life both as individuals and as a married couple.

Long and Short Reviews welcomes Stefanie London who is visiting with us to celebrate today’s release of Bad Reputation, part of the Bad Bachelors series. Enter the Rafflecopter at the end of the post to win a copy of the first book of the series Bad Bachelor.

It’s true, Wes is well-endowed.
But everything else is a huge misunderstanding…

Wes Evans, son of Broadway royalty, just wants to achieve something without riding his family’s coattails. Too bad the whole world is talking about his sex life after the notorious Bad Bachelors app dubs him “The Anaconda”. But when he sees a talented ballet dancer, he knows she is exactly what he needs to make his show a success.

Remi Drysdale only had one thought when she fled Australia for New York—never mix business with pleasure again. Ever. Working with Wes is the perfect chance to reclaim her career. Remi promises herself not to tangle with the guy who holds her career in his hands…no matter how enticing his reviews are on the Bad Bachelors app.

Enjoy an Excerpt

He leaned back in his chair, legs spread slightly apart. The pose was unabashedly male, and Remi shifted her gaze away from him, turning back to face the empty rows of seats representing the audience. The last thing she needed was the “Anaconda” staring back at her while she tried to nail these steps.

“Three, two, one.” She counted herself in and rose up into relevé.

Her toes protested, but she gritted her teeth. She couldn’t let Wes see she was struggling. Not when he’d placed so much faith in her.

She stepped up onto the chair, her floaty, chiffon skirt swirling around her thighs. Swish, swish, kick. Her foot sailed over his lap, missing him easily and she tried not to be distracted by the blue eyes trained intently on her. Swish, swish, kick. She turned, stepping into an arabesque, facing him, her back leg extended away from the chairs. Her ankle wobbled, the chair uneven enough that if she didn’t rise up in exactly the right spot, she couldn’t get a flat surface to balance on.

She wobbled again and fell forward, her hand coming down on Wes’s shoulder.

“Whoa.” He grabbed her easily, steadying her so she could bring her other foot down to the chair.

Humiliation burned in her cheeks. The other dancers seemed so much more at ease, so much more professional. They weren’t scared by the strangeness of the moves or the challenge of working with these props.

“I wanted to practice alone tonight,” she bit out. She was annoyed at herself for feeling so far behind, rather than at him for turning up unannounced. After all, he had every right to be there. “I’ll get it, I promise.”

“I know you will.” He stood, his hands still on her.

Her chest rose and fell, the deep breaths threatening more emotion that she desperately tamped down. Wes moved in front of her, his other hand coming up to smooth over her hip. He settled it on the other side of the waist.

“I’m going to hold you,” he said. “Go back into arabesque.”

Swallowing, she rose onto pointe and stretched into the position. Her back leg extended behind her, pulling up to create a perfect, elongated shape. Her arms floated in front, one slightly higher than the other as she looked out over her fingertips, concentrating on the crack in the beige wall on the other side of the studio.

She held the position, feeling safe with his hands holding her steady. It’d been so long since she’d had a partner to give her a safety net. To make sure she didn’t fall.

Remi didn’t dare look down, fearing that staring into Wes’s eyes might bring the most painful memories rushing back. She’d fallen in love once before in this very predicament—frightened of a new challenge, but with a strong, charming man holding her steady.

His touch burned through the fabric, sending sparks showering over her. The frayed edges of her nerves left her open, susceptible. They made her an easy target, like a rabbit caught in the glare of headlights. Ready to be flattened. Her breath hitched in the back of her throat, her heart slamming against her rib cage.

This wasn’t the effects of a memory.

It was the very real chemistry she’d walked away from the night they’d met at the bar. The kind of chemistry that was often imitated, rarely experienced. She knew choreographed chemistry, orchestrated chemistry. But this…this would burn her alive if she let it.

“Did you prove your point?” Her voice wobbled. Traitorous thing.

“What do you think my point was?” he asked.

Gone was the easy, humorous crinkles that normally bracketed his blue eyes. Gone was the cheeky smirk that lifted his lips, the one that always made her tummy flutter. Instead, he stared at her intently. Studying. Assessing. Like he could see a hell of a lot more than she wanted him to.

“To show me I can conquer my fears and all that. Was it meant to be a teachable moment?” She hated herself for trying to tarnish the flickering connection between them by being a sarcastic bitch. But Remi didn’t do vulnerable. She didn’t do open. Not anymore.

“I’m here to help you,” he said, frustration giving his tone a sharp edge. “Call it a ‘teachable moment’ if you like. Call it whatever the hell you want. But the reason I’m here is because I want this show to be a resounding success, and in order for that to happen, I need to make sure you slay whatever demon is lurking in your head.”

Yeah, he saw way too much.

“No demons,” she lied. “Just a fear of props.”

“Bullshit. We both know there’s more to it than that.”

He was still touching her, and she was still letting him. His strong hands made her waist look fragile. Made her look fragile.

You don’t want to be bloody fragile. You want to be a strong, badass ballerina who doesn’t need a man to save her.

But she was failing miserably.

“Help me down?” she asked, forcing a smile. She needed to break this spell. ASAP.

“Only if you stop feeding me bullshit,” he replied. “I know you probably come from a place where keeping your mouth shut is the only way to get ahead. I’ve been there too. But I can’t help you if you’re acting like I’m the enemy.”

“What if you can’t help me at all?” she whispered.

He tightened his hands around her and helped her down from the chair, the change in angle casting shadows across his face. Remi wasn’t short by any means, but Wes towered over her. He leaned forward, his dark hair flopping across his forehead. Without thinking, she reached up and brushed it back.

“I will keep pushing, Remi. I will poke and shove and I will make you angry enough to get out of your own head.” He pinned her with his stare. “I won’t let this show fail.”

Disappointment stabbed at her chest. Of course it was all about the show—she was doing the same stupid thing that she’d done before. Misinterpreting signs. Reading too much into things. Hearing what she wanted to hear.

Wasn’t that what Alex had said to her? If you thought I loved you, it was because you wanted to think that. Not because I meant it.

“I won’t let you fail.” Wes’s voice had turned rough. Gritty.

Don’t fall for it. Don’t fall for him.

Top Ten Tuesday: Books You’d Mash Together

Hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl

I’m going to need to mention some minor spoilers in today’s post in order to explain my selections. Most of the books I picked are older. I did this in large part so that I don’t ruin the plot twists of more recent fiction for anyone. Still, I thought I should warn all of you of this in advance in case your TBR lists include stuff that was predominantly published a few decades or even centuries ago.

Oh, and I was feeling extra chatty today, so this post is going to be longer than usual for me.

1. Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë and The Woman in White by Wilkie Collins.

I’m a huge Jane Eyre fan, but one of the things that always bothered me about the conclusion of her tale was how little attention was paid to the fate of Bertha Mason, the hidden and severely mentally ill wife of Jane’s employer, Mr. Rochester. Bertha had such a sad character arc that I half-expected her to show up again after her death. If Wilkie Collins’ tale had been mashed into this one, we could have gotten the vengeful spirit scenes I was waiting for.

2. The Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling and The Magicians trilogy by Lev Grossman.

Grossman’s series was marketed as Harry Potter for adults at one point. Both of these writers created worlds where magic was present everywhere and could easily go wrong if you didn’t know what you were doing with it.

While I’m still not sure that marketing The Magicians in this way was a good idea, I am intrigued by the thought of magicians going to graduate school. It never made sense to me that Harry Potter and his friends would have all of the practical knowledge they needed to make it as magicians at the tender age of 18. They really should have talked about higher education for whatever it was they wanted to specialize in after leaving Hogwarts.

3. Watership Down by Richard Adams and The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien.

There were so many other magical creatures running around in The Hobbit that I think it would have made perfect sense to include a family of rabbits on the search for a safe, new home. Since this was a world where all kinds of non-human creatures could talk, I’d like to see Hazel and all of the other rabbits be able to speak human languages fluently. Imagine the look on Bilbo’s face if he ran across this group and realized all of the rabbits before him could understand every word he was saying!

4. The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett and Anne of Green Gables by L.M. Montgomery.

Mary and Anne were both orphaned at young ages in societies that didn’t do a particularly good job of protecting orphans. They also had to learn how to thrive in families that weren’t happy to have them and didn’t do much of anything to help them adjust (at least at first). If only these two characters could have been neighbours. I think they would have been the best of friends.

5. The Velveteen Rabbit by Margery Williams and Where the Red Fern Grows by Wilson Rawls.

Both of these books are about love, loss, and death. One of the things that really bothered me about Where the Red Fern Grows was how dark its ending was after Billy’s beloved dogs died. It would have been nice for there to have been a scene to show the reward every good dog gets in the end. The supernatural twist in The Velveteen Rabbit would have worked nicely in this case, especially since Billy’s pets died when they were both still very young. I’d much rather have them living free and happy somewhere away from the main character than not being alive at all.

A Canticle for Leibowitz by Walter M. Miller Jr. and The Book of Dave by Will Self.

Both of these stories were about what happened to humanity after society collapsed and the vast majority of people forgot how their ancestors used to live. The Book of Dave focused on how that collapse destroyed families. A Canticle for Leibowitz was more concerned with how such a disaster would destroy literature, history, education, and knowledge in general.

Combining all of these factors together would make for a fascinating – if also sometimes frightening- read.

7. Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro and Unwind by Neal Shusterman.

Both of these series portray worlds where some people are murdered so that their organs can be used to improve or save the lives of strangers.

Never Let Me Go showed it happening to childless and unmarried folks in their 50s and 60s. Unwind showed it happening to teenagers, especially teens who didn’t have the protection of loving parents. Honestly, I think any society willing to do this wouldn’t care how old their victims were. They could easily target both groups in order to make sure that the folks deemed worthy by the powers that be would always have the organs and other body parts they needed to survive.

8. The Road by Cormac McCarthy and Earth Abides by George R. Stewart.

The never-ending hopeless of The Road unnerved me. Like Earth Abides, it was set in a post-apocalyptic world where extinction for humankind seemed imminent. These tales would have worked well together when it came to their descriptions of the lengths desperate and starving people will go to in order to survive for another day.

I’d want to stick with the more optimistic ending of Earth Abides, though.

9. The Book of Negroes by Lawrence Hill and Gone with the Wind by Margaret Mitchell.

Gone with the Wind would have been a much better story if one of the main characters in it had been a slave, especially since Scarlett, the actual protagonist, never came across to me as someone who was particularly empathetic or interested in what was happening to those around her. The Book of Negroes was filled with scenes that showed just how harsh slavery was. It would have rounded out what this era was actually like quite well.

10. The Diary of a Young Girl by Anne Frank and Book Thief by Mark Zusak.

The first time I read Anne Frank’s diary, I assumed she had somehow survived World War II and published her memoir after being liberated from a concentration camp. The fact that this wasn’t her fate made me incredibly sad.

Mixing the true story of what happened to her with the fictional, and much happier, events of Book Thief would be wonderful. I desperately wish we could have known who Anne would have become as an adult. She would have written a lot of amazing stories for sure, and who knows what else she could have accomplished!
