An edge of your seat hard SF adventure as colonists on a new world find that nothing is what they expected and that travelling to a distant star is far more dangerous than they’d ever imagined…in Allen Steele’s Sanctuary.

The world building was fantastic. I especially appreciated all of the time the author spent describing what the climate and wildlife were like on the new planet. These are the sorts of details that make a setting come alive in my imagination, especially when they’re described by a narrator who was sharing an objective impression of what their surroundings were like and what was happening to them and the crew as they acclimated to their surroundings. It was exactly the sort of writing I’d expect to see in the hard science fiction sub-genre.

There were times when I found the large cast of characters confusing. This was even more true due to how often the different narrators took over describing what happened to these colonists next after they finally arrived at an Earth-like planet and realized that all of the earlier data they’d collected about it had neglected to pick up on one critical detail about what that planet was actually like. If not for the issues I had remembering who was who, I would have given this tale a perfect rating. Everything else about it was extremely well done.

The ending made me yearn for more. While it did tie up all of the most important conflicts from earlier on in the plot, it also left room for all sorts of different things to happen to the characters from that point forward. I appreciated the fact that I could come up with my own theories about what the crew’s ultimate fates would be once they realized what their lives were truly going to be like on this planet. If Mr. Steele ever decides to write a sequel, I’d sure love to read it.

If you’ve ever gazed up at the night sky and wondered what it would be like to visit a faraway world, Sanctuary might be right up your alley.

Love always endures the test of time

After a devastating fire pitted their families against each other, high school sweethearts Phoebe Ritter and Aidan Payne were torn apart. Twenty years later, Aidan is called back to Blessings, nervous about confronting his painful past. And that’s BEFORE he knows about the nineteen-year-old secret Phoebe has been harboring all this time.

As Aidan tries to make up for lost time with the family he didn’t know he had, Phoebe and Aidan rediscover long-suppressed feelings. But the past won’t lie buried, and old enemies threaten to destroy the peace they’ve fought so hard to find.

Aidan was carrying a suitcase to their car when he heard the sound of running footsteps. He looked up to see Phoebe coming toward him. Her face was red like she’d been crying and her long brown hair was in wild disarray. The sight of her appearance now, after all he and his family had endured alone, both hurt and angered him. He shoved the suitcase into the trunk and headed back inside.

“Wait, Aidan, wait.”

He stopped, then slowly turned to face her.

“What are you doing here?”

Sunlight momentarily blinded her as she looked up. She blinked rapidly to clear her vision, then looked up again, searching his face for a sign that he was glad to see her, and saw nothing but hate and disgust.

Her heart sank.

“Please don’t go.”

Aidan’s body language was one of defiance. The tone of his voice held nothing but disdain.

“The only thing that matters to me here, is that I’m leaving my mother behind. Her death broke what was left of my father’s heart, and your family destroyed his reputation. We can’t get out of Blessings soon enough for me. Go home.”

Phoebe started to shake. This was really happening. She was losing Aidan forever.

“I’m sorry. I’m so sorry,” she said. “Please don’t be mad at me! I know your father is innocent.”

He turned his back and walked into the house.

Despite the sweat running down her back, she suddenly shivered. She’d never seen him like this – cold and shut down, but she couldn’t leave. She stood on the sidewalk waiting, half-blind with tears as he and his father come out of Preston Williams’ house together.

Preston gave each of them a last hug, and then stood on the porch as they headed to the car.

Preston saw her, but didn’t acknowledge her.

George glanced at her, started to speak, and then shook his head and slid into the driver’s seat.

Aidan put the last of their things into the trunk and slammed it shut.

“I’m sorry, Aidan,” Phoebe said.

He didn’t look at her as he got into the car.

George started the engine.

“Please! You have to forgive me,” Phoebe cried.

George put the car in gear and backed out of the drive.

Phoebe started running down the driveway after them. “Come back! Come back! Please, Aidan, come back to me!”

Aidan glanced in the side mirror outside his window, startled to see her running behind the car. But they were going faster, and her image was growing smaller and smaller. The last sight he had of her before they turned the corner, she was on her knees in the street, her hands covering her face. The pain in his chest was so great he thought he would die.

He took a slow, shaky breath and looked away.

About the Author: It was a job she hated that drove Sharon Sala to put the first page of paper in an old typewriter, but it was the love of the craft that kept her writing. Her first efforts at writing came in 1980 when she began a book that wound up under her bed. A second book followed in 1981 and suffered a similar fate, but she claims the writing bug had bitten hard. However, she let life and the demands of a growing family delay her from continuing until a tragedy struck.

Her father died in May of 1985 after a lingering illness and then only two months later her only sister died unexpectedly, leaving her almost blind with grief. She vowed then and there that she was not going to wind up on her deathbed one day with regrets for not following through on her dreams.

She joined writers groups and attended conferences and slowly learned her way around the written page. By 1989, she decided she had come far enough in her writing to attempt another try at book-length fiction and began a book that would later be entitled SARA’S ANGEL. As fate would have it, the first publisher she sent it to, bought it, and she hasn’t looked back.

As a farmer’s daughter and then for many years a farmer’s wife, Sharon escaped the drudgeries of life through the pages of books, and now as a writer, she finds herself often living out her dreams. Through traveling and speaking and the countless thousands of fan letters she has received, Sharon has touched many lives. One faithful reader has crowned her the “Reba of Romance” while others claim she’s a magician with words.

Her stories are often dark, dealing with the realities of this world, and yet she’s able to weave hope and love within the words for the readers who clamor for her latest works.

Always an optimist in the face of bad times, many of the stories she writes come to her in dreams, but there’s nothing fanciful about her work. She puts her faith in God, still trusts in love and the belief that, no matter what, everything comes full circle.

Her books, written under her name and under her pen name, Dinah McCall, repeatedly make the big lists, including The New York Times, USA Today, Publisher’s Weekly and Waldenbooks Mass market fiction.

She turned, and his arm captured her waist. “Excited.” She raised her glass, giving him a salute before she took a sip.

“Excited about what I’m going to do to you? You don’t even know me and here you are, open to the possibilities.” His hand moved to the back of her head and gripped it tight. His lips inched closer to hers. Champagne-tinged breath whispered across her lips before he said in a low, seductive voice, “I have wicked plans for us this weekend. You wanted edgy, possibly forbidden sex. You’ve come to the right man. I think we’re meant for each other.” His mouth captured hers. She Wanted Sanctuary…

Helena Reynolds will do anything to escape her life in London, even if that means traveling to a remote cliffside estate on the North Devon coast and marrying a complete stranger. But Greyfriar’s Abbey isn’t the sort of refuge she imagined. And ex-army captain Justin Thornhill–though he may be tall, dark, and devastatingly handsome–is anything but a romantic hero.

Justin has spent the last two decades making his fortune, settling scores, and suffering a prolonged period of torture in an Indian prison. Now, he needs someone to smooth the way for him with the villagers. Someone to manage his household–and warm his bed on occasion. What he needs, in short, is a wife and a matrimonial advertisement seems the perfect way to acquire one.

Their marriage was meant to be a business arrangement and nothing more. A dispassionate union free from the entanglements of love and affection. But when Helena’s past threatens, will Justin’s burgeoning feelings for his new bride compel him to come to her rescue? Or will dark secrets of his own force him to let her go?

Wow! Oh my goodness! Amazing! I started a new full time job and I swore my days of staying up reading past my bedtime were over! From now on I’m not starting a book before bedtime. I can’t take the risk anymore. I couldn’t put The Matrimonial Advertisement book down.

Everything I look for in a book was incorporated in this romance. I love it when both the hero and heroine have strong personalities yet have vulnerabilities. They are equally intelligent, caring and mutually attracted to one another. This was a sweet romance with the bedroom door firmly closed.

I was smitten with Justin. I’ve never had a man fight for me nor do I wish for that. However, I swooned over Justin’s chivalry.

The plot was absolutely riveting from the first page to the last. This story was exceptionally well written. I’m excited that it’s book one in the Parish Orphans of Devon series. I really hope the next book is about Mr. Finchley and Jenny. I hope there are some guest appearances from Justin and Helena.

This story evoked many emotions in me. I laughed, I got teary eyed and even experienced anger towards Helena’s uncle. The unpredictable moments had me feeling on edge. Mostly I felt happy. I love it when there is an epilogue that leaves me with a book glow.

I can’t say enough wonderful things about this story. Unfortunately it’s past my bedtime. Please give this book a chance if you enjoy historical romance novels. I’m glad I did.

Sometimes an accident can bring changes to someone’s life that probably never would have otherwise happened.

Sadness permeated every corner of this story, and that was a good thing. There was something poignant about the death of the bird in the first scene. Seeing the tone of that moment being matched by everything else that was going wrong in Winona’s life was oddly satisfying. I desperately wanted her to finally find a place in this world where she felt accepted and loved after realizing just how lacking those things were in her life.

I would have liked to see more attention paid to Winona’s backstory. The scraps of information that were eventually revealed about it piqued my imagination, but they didn’t provide quite enough details in order for me to understand why this character felt so out of place in the world. Given how gloomy this tale was, i it sure would have been helpful to know more about where she came from and why she was unbearably lonely.

While I did see the ending coming in advance, that didn’t change how much I enjoyed watching it unfold. There was something beautiful about knowing what could very well happen to the main character before she had any clue at all that her life was about to take a highly unusual turn. There weren’t many hints at all about what was her future held in the beginning, so anyone who is planning to read this should pay close attention to every little detail they notice along the way.

I’d recommend The White-Throated Transmigrant to anyone who has any interest at all in taxidermy.

Samuel Seecombe hasn’t been the same since a routine vampire hunt turned into a tragedy, and a trip across the ocean to New York City for an acquaintance’s wedding might be just what he needs to feel like himself again. What he doesn’t anticipate is meeting his beautiful vampire hunting counterpart in Violet Singer.

Violet wants a change of scenery. News of a vampire infestation at the Canadian border has her packing her stake, mallet, and holy water to take care of her wanderlust and the bloodsuckers at the same time. But Niagara Falls isn’t just for lovers and newlyweds. Vampires are increasing their ranks, and Violet and Samuel may find themselves outnumbered before they can sort out their feelings for each other.

Samuel Seecombe is far too well-bred to turn down an invitation to a wedding, particularly when he knows it will help solidify inter-country relationships between the Seekers. That doesn’t mean, however, he relishes leaving London for New York, nor that he has any inclination of doing more than remaining polite through all the cultural differences. Violet’s sister might be getting married, but Violet is determined to be welcoming and polite to their visitor. But when work clashes with the festivities Violet and Samuel need to come together to so what they both excel at – hunt vampires.

I found this to be a surprising and interesting story, rather steam-punk-ish in that it was clearly historical, but also rather strongly paranormal and almost urban-fantasy-ish. With travel on airbuses and vampire hunters abounding I was sucked into the storyline very quickly and although I struggled a little to catch-up with the different world and settings I was intrigued enough to not be daunted by the fact I clearly would be getting a lot more out of it had I read the previous two books in the series. While I feel technically this can be read as a stand alone – certainly Samuel and Violet’s romance was central to this book and holds well on its own, I must admit I spent a lot of time feeling like I was playing catch-up, not having a clue about the world, setting or scene that this book was placed in. I feel I definitely would have found it even more compelling had I read the previous installments.

I quite enjoyed the fact there was a faint rivalry between America and England. While not crass or overt I did like the small discrepancies between the countries and the fact they each expected some stereotypes that weren’t precisely true. I found this both realistic for the historical/steam-punk type of setting and also highly amusing in a fun way. It added a lovely bit of tension without being over the top or feeling too heavy and I thoroughly enjoyed it. It also highlighted the fact that neither Violet nor Samuel were as easy to understand as one would expect. Definitely no cookie-cutter characters here and that was both delightful and refreshing to my mind.

The hunter aspect of the story came forward pretty promptly and was complicated enough to keep my attention glued to turning more pages. This added a delicious element of mystery to the whole story and I found myself having difficulty trying to fit this book into a single genre – part steam-punk, part historical, part mystery, part vampire-hunter, this story really does have an element for everyone and a lovely slow-blossoming romance between Samuel and Violet to boot. While the romance moves at a lovely sedate pace, there is an intimate scene towards the end of the book. I felt it was tastefully written, although possibly too explicit for some more traditional readers. I thought the scene was both romantic and realistic for the historical (ish) setting.

With interesting and complicated characters, a great plot and a well-developed alternative world I feel this book has a whole lot of appeal for a very wide range of readers. Fun and intense, I thoroughly enjoyed it.

They made a bed for Ty on the lumpy sofa. He’d insisted he could sleep in the truck, but gave in when Gran insisted.

“In the old days, the hands used to stay in the bunkhouse,” Gran said. “There are beds and a kitchen. It used to be real comfortable.”

“Yes, Ma’am,” Ty said dutifully.

“But, it’s not clean out there. You just make yourself comfy right here.” She patted the sofa invitingly.

Leah cast a last glance at Ty and headed for Gran’s spare room, Gracie in tow. She found their nightclothes among the hurriedly packed bags and dressed Gracie for bed. Tucking her in, Leah gave her a kiss on the forehead. Eddie jumped on the foot of the bed and curled up too.

Gracie mumbled a hurried prayer, ending with, “an’ God bless Mommy, an’ Gran, an’ Ty. Amen.”

Leah’s breath caught in her throat. How could this big cowboy come to mean so much to them both in so few hours? How is Gracie going to feel when he’s gone? She swallowed hard. How am I going to feel?

She leaned down to brush a kiss on her daughter’s forehead, and pulled the covers up under her chin. “You go to sleep now.”
Dutifully, Gracie snuggled down beneath the quilt and closed her eyes, her angelic expression the picture of peace and contentment.

Gazing at her child’s sweet face, a knot formed in her chest. This is the best place for us. I haven’t been able to give Gracie much, up until now, but maybe that will change. She gave herself a mental head slap. It will change. Things will get better.

Leah thought about her options. Maybe she could get a job back in Langston. It was the closest town and where Gracie would be enrolled in school, come September. She wasn’t quite sure what she might be able to do, but she was used to hard work, so surely someone would give her a chance.

The house was quiet. Tiptoeing out of their room, Leah padded down the hall toward the kitchen in her bare feet. Silently, she took a glass out of the cupboard and filled it with water from the tap. Moonlight spilled in through the window, bathing her in a soft glow as she lifted the glass to her lips. When she’d finished, she set the empty glass in the sink.

Turning, she almost stumbled over Lucky. The dog had been so quiet she hadn’t heard him approach. Leaning down, she stroked his head. “Hey there, stealth doggy. You snuck up on me.” She spoke in hushed tones, barely above a whisper. The dog swished his tail from side to side.

“Do you need some water too? I put a big bowl right over here.” She checked the corner of the kitchen where she had left one of Gran’s mixing bowls earlier, but found it empty. “Oh, thirsty, doggy. Let me give you a refill.” She held the bowl under the tap and set it on the floor, tucked in the corner so no one would run into it. “There you go.”

The dog began to lap noisily. Leah knelt down beside him to run her hand over the silky fur. “Good boy” she whispered and rose from her crouch. When she turned, she ran smack into a brick wall. A warm muscled brick wall with arms. She stifled a scream as she pushed off the wall and was gathered into a rough embrace.

“Easy, Leah.”

“Oh, Ty! You scared me.” Swallowing hard, she braced her hands against his powerful bare chest. The sensation sent her heart into a flutter. Longing surged through her. Longing for what, she wasn’t quite certain, but longing nonetheless.

“Sorry,” he murmured, his voice deep and raspy. “I thought Lucky was getting into something.” He held her firmly against his warm torso.

She swallowed again. “N—No, I’m sorry I woke you.” Gazing up, she couldn’t read his expression in the darkness.

He expelled a breath, staring down at her moon-washed face. “You are just too pretty for my own good.”

A rage of desire swirled low in her belly. Her pulses pounded in her ears. With no direction, she rose on her tiptoes and lifted her chin.

He made a sort of growl back in his throat before his arms tightened around her and he lowered his head. His kiss was soft, tentative at first, and then deepened. Lifting her off her feet, he devoured her mouth with hungry kisses. Heat from his bare flesh infiltrated her thin gown, setting fire to her desire.

His hunger seemed to fuel hers, as the kiss continued to escalate.

Passion bloomed in her chest, sending a flush of pleasure throughout her being. When she came up for air, she had wrapped both arms around his neck. Gasping for air, she shivered. Everything was happening too fast. The room seemed to be spinning, or was it just her head? Heat emanating from his warm skin sent a spiral of lust to her core. She stroked her fingertips against the side of his face. The rough stubble of his beard rasped against her cheek, her neck, her shoulder. “I’m sorry,” he whispered. Holding her tight he gave her a squeeze before setting her on her feet. “I had no business doing that.”

Stunned, Leah stepped back, “No—I…I mean…”

Ty rubbed her cheek with the back of his fingers. “I’m sorry.” He stepped away and, giving one rueful glance at her, he strode from the kitchen leaving Leah leaning against the cabinet, shaking in the aftermath of their encounter.

Some of them are far more serious than anyone might have guessed at first glance.

As soon as I read the premise of this tale, I couldn’t wait to find out what it was going to be like to check it out for myself. There was something about the combination of grief and playing a board game that appealed to me quite a bit. They aren’t two things that I’d ever think to link together, so I was intrigued by the thought of them being combined. The deeper I got into the storyline, the more I understood where the author was coming from and how a board game could help someone heal after a tragedy.

The ending totally confused me. Suddenly, the plot stopped without any advanced warning. I only had the faintest idea of what might have happened or why the author decided to wrap things up at that point. It would have been really helpful to have more clues about what Ansel figured out about his sister’s disappearance and what happened to him after the events of the final scene.

Ansel’s character development was handled nicely. I’ll admit to not being a huge fan of him in the beginning. He had such a pessimistic outlook on life that I struggled to relate to him even though I had a lot of sympathy for what he must have been going through since his sister disappeared. With that being said, I was impressed with where Mr. Shehadeh went with this character after establishing Ansel as someone who didn’t find a lot of hope in life and who couldn’t stop obsessing over what might have happened to his sibling.

I’d recommend Red to anyone who has ever wished they could go back in time and change something about their pasts.

Carver: A decade ago, an angel made the worst mistake of her life. Yasmin saved a monster. The broken man she knew has become the most feared man in the city. And I’m done waiting. Her pathetic excuse of a father owes me a shitload of money and I intend to collect her as payment.

It began when I dropped a ceramic pie dish for no apparent pills viagra canada reason. A recent graduate co-directed the cheapest brand cialis feature film “Gamer” which stars Gerard Butler. After the examination researchers found a single dosage of this medicine helped people to avail the treatment without pfizer viagra discount deeprootsmag.org any financial issue. They brought gel and soft tablet cialis samples free version in the market. The moment I saw her, I knew what she was. Mine.

Yasmin: I wasted my entire life cleaning after my father’s messes. I never expected to end up as collateral damage. Knowing Carver is the kingpin makes it worse, because I can’t deny what my body wants. My heart on the other hand, is mine to protect. I’ve been hurt plenty before but falling for the city’s biggest monster had never been part of the plan.

Carver was a hard man living a hard life – desperate and willing to do whatever he had to in order to survive, he never expected kindness or compassion from a complete stranger. But that’s what he found when Yasmin offered him help for no reason other than he needed it. Carver instantly knew she was his and no one else’s. Years later, when Yasmine is tired of picking up after her father and saving his bacon all the time, Carver has the chance to fulfill his promise and repay her kindness.

I found this to be an intense but really interesting and emotional story. While it’s clear that Carver is capable of great violence and is not a soft or easy man, he isn’t heartless or despicable as he – and his reputation – seem to think. Carver is certainly possessive and a little bit obsessed with Yas, but it’s equally clear to me that he genuinely cares about her and that small act of kindness she showed him those many years ago touched Carver and changed something deep inside him.

For me, personally, both Carver and Yas’ characters were complex, layered and deeply interesting. I’m not much of a fan of the harder plotlines a lot of stories have recently – MC clubs and assassins, kingpins etc – but I thoroughly enjoyed this story primarily because Carver was such an interesting and engrossing character. He and Yasmine are totally suited – Yas being a strong, resilient and brave woman, a good match for Caver and the life he’s made for himself. I also really appreciated that while it’s clear the world Carver inhabits is a violent one, much of the grittiness of that violence and aggression was in the background here – the romance and relationship building between Carver and Yas was front and centre and that greatly helped me enjoy the story and helped keep me reading eagerly.

While there isn’t a hint of further stories to come – I’d happily pick up a story about one of Carver’s bodyguards, Jake. I found him to easily be the most interesting secondary character introduced in the story and would find his story quite appealing to read. When a story leaves me wanting to read more, that’s always a good thing. I found this to be a good story with a solid plotline and interesting characters. Recommended.
