There are far too many commas here

At a bar with a friend recently, we discussed our grammatical foibles. Hers was overuse of semicolons. Apparently in law school she once sat through an entire group project session listening to a peer make snide comments about semicolon usage. She got the highest grade. We both agree that semicolons are excellent. No doubt we are in the minority.

I have a slightly more common issue. I have never been able to master the use of the comma.

Consider me, in eighth grade grammar class, failing miserably to see the extraneous commas. I never got them all. Other forms of punctuation come to me intuitively, the aforementioned semicolon included. But the comma, that remains confusing. I blame my same eighth grade English teacher, who would exasperatedly repeat, “Just listen for the pauses!” My apologies, but I cannot hear them.

That is not to say that I don’t hear the rhythm of a sentence, of course. I do. It’s just that where the rhythm breaks for me is sometimes not where the rhythm breaks according to the grammatical preferences of English. This is especially difficult in editing, when I find myself reading through a sentence multiple times asking myself if I really do need that comma. I’ve gotten in the habit of reading manuscripts backwards during proofing in part for this very reason. It breaks the word flow up enough that I can forget the natural pauses I would take in the sentence and instead focus on what I hope the grammatically correct punctuation should be. Hope, because commas remain slippery beasts. I’m never quite sure.

Luckily, writers get to take advantage of the artistic nature of our work to slide past some of these technicalities in the pursuit of art. Not that art should be an excuse for ineptitude. In any case, there are always editors and copyeditors to smeer your page in red ink. Heavens knows what we’d do without them. If you see an errant comma in my work, however, please be kind. No doubt it’s one of ten that were ruthlessly cut down in the name of a clean manuscript.

Liana has lost much to Herka’s manipulations, though nothing so precious as her sanity. Emerging from her madness, she finds the world changed – her body wasted, her son gone, and her kingdom still beyond her reach. Only the fires of vengeance remain, and she will build the flames high.

DAUGHTER OF MADNESS tells the story of a princess and her twin, a soldier and his king, and an oracle who is more than she seems.

They came to the edge of the village. The houses hung in the darkness, smoke from cooking fires painted the air. There was no returning. The priest of the Quet’le-Ma appeared beside her, androgynous face unreadable in the shadows. The contraption of flame was pressed into her palm, and something else. A clay pot, its top filled with fine rushes, not the slower burning woven wick. Liana stared at it for a moment, feeling the fire closer than it had been since she had put the pieces of herself back together.

“Liana,” her brother said, “we don’t have to do this.” She started, looked back at him. It surprised her to see the look of anguish on his face. Her own lips were twisted up at the ends, smiling with sudden euphoria. This, at least, the song of the fire, this she could have back if only the children of Herka would die.

She turned, and lit the little clay pot. It flared in her palm. Her arm pulled back, and she threw.

Maya Rodale’s wonderfully witty Writing Girls series is a winner! Her third delectable love story to feature a plucky Regency heroine with a pen, The Tattooed Duke follows a scandal sheet reporter posing as a common housemaid in order to uncover whatever nasty little skeletons an adventure-seeking Duke may be hiding in his closets—only to fall in passionate love with the nobleman whose secrets she’s been exposing to the world! The Tattooed Duke is deliciously fun historical romance fiction in the vein of Laura Lee Guhrke and Suzanne Enoch, and no true romance fan will want to write it off!

A Regency Bad Boy – oh my!

After reading this book, I simply have to read the first two of the series because The Tattooed Duke was deliciously naughty. I’m sure the previous titles won’t cause the same shivery sensations as this one did when the author described Wycliff, but if the caliber of writing is the same, I’m going to be a very happy reader.

I think my heart beat overtime whenever Eliza explored the hunkiness that is the Duke of Wycliff. I don’t even have the caliber of vocabulary to adequately describe the sensual and commanding presence the hero embodied when he was on stage. His effect on the heroine was pure heat and at times they combusted from their shared passion – as forbidden as it was. The scenes that led up to those moments, the buildup and delivery, were sublime and that’s due to the solid writing talent of Ms. Rodale.

There’s adventure, close calls and narrow escapes. There are characters that flavor and color the story and contribute significant amounts of excitement, thrills, drama, suspense, laughter and even assistance in the romance between Wycliff and Eliza. The novel has it all.

Eliza is a clever minx who does what she has to in order to remain employed at a newspaper. Her personal epiphany comes from finally coming to terms with the question – what and who is she willing to sacrifice just to get a story published? How far is she willing to go? The answer was satisfying but not without peril and personal cost. Great story hook!

As for Wycliff – readers are just going to have to pick up their own copy to find out what’s in the secret room, how he came to have such impressive tattoos and if he realizes his deepest desire.

I think one of the most sensual scenes takes place while planting seeds. There are more depths to the Duke than anyone suspects. Again, it makes for page-turning reading.

I almost missed the epilogue because I thought it was promo for the next book in the series. Ha! That was exceptionally clever of the author and I enjoyed the final wrap-up. I’m wondering if the Duke’s rival will have his own story someday – a reader can hope.

Historical fans are really missing out if they’ve yet to read The Tattooed Duke. It’s going on my keeper shelf. I adored Wycliff!!!

With love on the line, will AJ decide to forgive him when he confesses to being part of the set-up?

After a nasty break up all AJ wants to do is wallow and allow her broken heart to mend. When her two best friends insist on a night out though, AJ finally capitulates and joins them, only to panic at the thought of even talking to some of the hunky men. Needing a massive boost in her confidence, AJ decides to give Flirt Chat – and Mathias – a go. Surely talking to a guy over the phone can’t get complicated?

I found this to be an interesting and fun short story. I found the premise interesting – a kind of “try before you buy” chat-style dating set-up. In many ways it seemed like a good idea – especially how the two people can communicate and sound each other out before actually meeting up, but I wasn’t overly convinced at the way which AJ was so readily won over. Considering the night before she’d all but bolted and been ill over simply talking face-to-face with a handsome man I found it a little unrealistic that talking to a man (with a deep, sexy voice) over the phone would be any less panic-inducing. After dis-connecting my brain however, I just relaxed back and enjoyed the ride, finding the story far more enjoyable after this.

I was a little disappointed that the conflict aspect of the story felt over-done to my tastes. While understandable it was a little too close to clichéd for me to enjoy it. When AJ, her friends and Mathias all talked through the situation though I was glad it got resolved fairly quickly. I did love, however, watching the slow, gradual progression of Mathias and AJ’s relationship blossom. Their talks and extensive “getting to know you” period helped me really feel and believe in the solidness of their relationship and the strength of their foundation. Readers looking for a hot and heavy, intensely erotic story might be disappointed that while there’s a bit of naughty phone sex, the only actual consummation between AJ and Mathias is right at the end of the story.

Light and interesting, this is a good short story with only a few hiccups for me, personally. I thoroughly enjoyed the plot and characters and will be keeping an eye out for potential future stories revolving around AJ’s two best friends.

Night of the Living Manny by Julia Talbot – Guest Blog

Long and Short Reviews welcomes Julia Talbot who is celebrating the recent release of Night of the Living Manny.

Hey y’all!

I’m Julia Talbot, and I’m here to chat today about Night of the Living Manny, my new paranormal category romance from Dreamspinner Press!

Manny is a zombie book. Totally not a spoiler, right? Not with the title. I loved the challenge of writing it for the Dreamspun Beyond line, because those books are meant to be lighter, less scary, but still paranormal.

Let me tell you about the challenges of this! I write a lot of paranormal. Usually shifters or vampires. So this was humans trapped in an extraordinary situation. Plus kids. Plus a dog. Now, we all know how hard it is to get through a book wondering who will survive. With kids. And a dog.

Eek. I had to walk a fine line between suspense, the zombie genre, and keeping the publisher’s line in mind. I love a challenge, y’all. But the most difficult thing for me was no biting, no spankiness and no fated mates, which are usually my go -to paranormal loves.

Manny is, I hope, funny. Suspenseful. A true zombie story a la Shaun of the Dead. I had such a fun time weaving all the elements together, and my beta readers and editors really helped make the story flow. Timeline can be a challenge for me as a writer. So can the shiny squirrel syndrome. Let’s put this in! And this!

They had to rein me in some, but that’s okay.

There’s still kids. And a dog. And a science lab. What could possibly go wrong?

As a side note, I tend to listen to music as I write, but I found it really tough to make a playlist for this book. What I ended up doing was letting zombie movies play in the background while I typed away.

How cool is it that I can say I got to watch zombie movies for work? I do love my job.

Anyway, I hope y;all will give Night of the Living Manny a chance!

“The girls all stared at me in horror— but their knees were clenched together tight, terror on their faces. There was no way they were going to stand up, lift their skirts, and take my place…”

The last person Diana expects her carriage to be overtaken by is Daniel—an old school-friend-turned-rogue. When Daniel makes a show of threatening the ladies he does not expect Diana to volunteer to be his plaything for the evening. But Diana is eager to escape her life as a traveling pilgrim and her celibacy vows… and this is her chance…

Diana and Daniel make such a great couple! While this book was super short, and we don’t get to see much of the characters’ personalities, there is still a respect and attraction between the two that is addictive.

Diana and Daniel met in school, and had a short lived fling in high-school which left a lasting impression, and desire, in each of them. I enjoyed the chemistry and respect shown by Daniel toward Diana in this story. Even as a highwayman he is shown to have a moral code.

I’m often picky about romances not having enough characterization or story, but somehow I loved reading this one! I felt it had just enough information and detail without over-doing it. If you are looking for a quick read with a sweet romance, I definitely recommend picking this one up!

Every year there’s a call for all villains to attempt to kidnap the not so human princess. Being half vampire gives me an advantage but when I meet Aneen things don’t go as planned with her or the suspicious, sexy bodyguard, Stefen. Then she’s kidnapped by my partner. With Stefen’s help, we go on a perilous journey to save the princess. I never expected to find my conscious along the way or reveal a terrible secret hidden in history.

In a world of shape shifters, fairies, selkies and mermen, a war is brewing. The fate of Otherworld stands on the brink of destruction. Can a violent half vampire, a stubborn bodyguard, and half goddess princess save this magical world?

A princess, a bodyguard and a half-vampire walk into a bar…actually, they fought their way out of surprising ending or maybe it’s a beginning. What I know for sure is that it’s a entertaining story that left me wanting more.

It’s not easy to be the “bad guy” when you realize you’re wildly attracted to the good guys. Alexander is seriously cocky, sexy and fun to watch. Except for when he has to vamp out on some unsuspecting foe, then he’s deadly. He doesn’t plan to be on the other side of the plot to kidnap the princess, meaning the side that does the rescuing rather than the taking, but he’s much better suited for it. Especially when he teams up with Stefen.

It’s so obvious that Stefen is in love with his charge, I’m not sure how they’ve gone this long without giving in, even a little bit. But Stefen is all things noble and protective and strong. It was funny to see how Alexander threw him off his game and when he gives in to Alexander, oh man! Hot personified!

While I really got into the backstory of how the Queen hold the throne and where Aneen came from–seriously dark and compelling–there were a couple threads in the story that had me wondering. So what happened to Brance? I could guess but then Alexander says something on the way to rescue the princess that has me doubting my theory. Also, Pan’s ulterior motive. It wasn’t that it wasn’t plausible, I just wouldn’t have guessed it. The one that really had me in a tail spin though, in a good way because I never even considered it, was the big ending. The author led me down one direction and then totally doubled back when I wasn’t looking. Bravo! I like not being able to guess an ending as long as said ending makes sense. Not only does it make sense it sets up the next book.

Readers who enjoy fantasy, good dose of the paranormal and some smoking hot bromance and guy love, need to give this one a try. I’m personally looking forward to the continuing adventure to see if it ties up the loose ends. Quick read, lots to take in!

Falling For the Prince

I’ve always been a fan of regency romances: Lord of Scoundrels, My Lord and Spymaster, Ravishing the Heiress, etc., etc., etc. But although I love them, I’ll never write one. The amount of research involved in historical writing is staggering, and I’m definitely not up to it.

But when I started work on Away, the first book of my Folk series, I discovered I was writing a regency after all, or anyway, I was writing about a regency character. One of my secondary characters is a prince of the Folk, Prince Bertilak, nicknamed Prince Bertie. And the more I saw of Bertie, the more I realized he was a regency hero set down in the foothills of the Colorado Rockies.

So what constitutes a regency romance hero, aside from the fact that he’s supposed to live in early nineteenth century England? He’s usually wealthy, frequently aristocratic, sometimes dissipated, usually sophisticated or jaded, and always dashing. So how does Prince Bertie stack up?

Like the typical regency hero, Bertie comes from wealth and power. His mother, Queen Alcina, is the nominal head of the mountain Folk, although the real governing is done by the chieftains of the clans. As I wrote Bertie’s dialogue, I could hear a refined British voice in my head, although Bertie himself is a Colorado native. In a nod to another regency tradition, he first appears as a decadent dandy, indulging in wine, women, and song while the hero, Grim Morrigan, carries out his duties as a Folk policeman. But there’s more to Bertie than he seems. He joins Grim’s investigation, proving to be a clever and experienced sidekick. And he has a few surprising traits that make him someone outside the box.

In the end, Bertie becomes Grim’s trusted friend and ally. And that surprised me. When I first started working on Away, I hadn’t planned on Bertie playing the major role he played. He became one of those secondary characters who suddenly take over a chunk of the plot. And the more I worked with him, the more I liked him. Bertie plays a major role in book 2 of the Folk, Unseen. And he’s the hero of book 3, Found.

Though I’ll undoubtedly never write a regency romance myself, with Away, I feel like I’ve had a chance to work with a regency dandy in all his variegated splendor. And I enjoyed it thoroughly.

Here’s a brief taste of Prince Bertie:

As she watched the vehicle make the final turn, she felt a sudden surge of panic. Suppose they became disoriented in the fog? Were they sure this was the right direction?

“Bertie,” she called, her throat suddenly tight with fear. “Are we going the right way?”

“No way to know for sure, is there?” Bertie’s voice sounded absurdly calm. “Trust to Anu. And to luck.”

Annie had no idea who Anu was. If by some miracle they survived this evening, she’d ask Grim. “Please get us out of here,” she whispered. “Whoever you are.”

Grim rolled down the window. “Ready?”

“Yeah.” Bertie nodded. “Come on, Annie. Time to walk.”

The chemlight sticks cast their light around six feet ahead. Annie paralleled Bertie at the side of the road, keeping her gaze on the dirt beneath her feet, watching for sudden drop-offs. A few seconds later, she heard a rich baritone warbling the opening lines of “Margaritaville.”

She gaped, thunderstruck. Bertie was singing.

“Jimmy Buffett,” he called. “Okay with you?”

“Fine,” she mumbled, joining in on the chorus. She felt almost like giggling but had a hunch she wouldn’t be able to stop if she started.

Beauty model girl with healthy brown hair

Grim Morrigan, Guardian of the Ward and part-time private detective, polices the Folk, the clans of fairies who live in the foothills outside Denver. But his main job is concealing their true nature from the mortals around them.

Enter mortal Annie Duran, who hires him to look for her brother Richard, missing and presumed dead for ten years. Annie has seen Richard in the parking lot of the nightclub where she works. Now she wants answers, and Grim’s supposed to find them.

The quest for Richard ensnares both Grim and Annie in a sinister conspiracy involving kidnapped women and outlaw magic. But they also discover their own overwhelming attraction to each other.

When Annie herself disappears, Grim’s need for answers becomes even more urgent. With the help of a dissolute prince and a motley crew of unlikely fairies, Grim confronts a rebellion among the Folk.

And it may take more than just magic and luck to save both Annie and Grim this time.

He leaned toward her, slowly, slowly, and she moved to meet him. His lips were softer than she remembered, gentle, brushing against the side of her throat. She took hold of his sleeve, her hand closing on the cool smoothness of the leather.

He pulled away, stripping off his coat, then edged in closer, catching her chin between his fingers. Not a gentle kiss this time, but a claiming that burned her skin, set her pulse racing. His hand cupped the back of her skull, holding her tight so his tongue could plunge deep into her mouth. She moaned, fumbling with the buttons on his shirt, feeling the coarse crinkle of hair and the heat of his skin. Her own desire built like a drumbeat.

And then he was lifting away, resting his forehead against hers, panting. “Wait.”

****

Wait? With every cell in his body screaming for her, he’d suddenly grown a conscience? Why the hell had his long-lost ethical sense decided to reappear now? Wretched timing, Grim. Just your style. He closed his eyes, catching his breath while he worked out what to say to Annie Duran that wouldn’t sound either insulting or insane.

“Wait?” She was staring at him, eyes shining with desire—and confusion.

He was such an idiot he felt like moaning.

Just as travel agent turned reluctant sleuth Gabby LeClair is starting to gain some of the Aloha spirit, a business consortium from Chicago breezes into the Aloha Lagoon resort and offers to buy her business. The offer is tempting…but so is hot helicopter pilot Rick Dawson, making it a difficult decision. One that becomes even more complicated when a dead body is discovered in Gabby’s backyard, and she’s suddenly thrust in the middle of a murder investigation!

The dead man is a former beachboy attendant from the island. With a trail of broken hearts—not to mention jealous rivals—leading up to the beachboy, Gabby tries to uncover just who had it in for the late lothario. Is the female of the species really more deadly than the male? Or has the beachboy scorned one too many women for some other man’s liking?

“Buy what?” Rick Dawson, the reason my heart fluttered on occasion, stood leaning against the wall by the door to Gabby’s Island Adventures. He was dressed in his signature uniform—jeans, boat shoes, and the royal blue polo shirt with his logo hummingbird and Rick’s Air Paradise embroidered above the pocket. He must have gotten some recent sun. His skin was golden, making his eyes shine like blue ice. He straightened away from the wall as we walked up, and slipped an arm around my waist, pulling me against him and kissing the top of my head. His scent, Old Spice and fresh island breeze, and the irresistible combination of his golden good looks and unmistakable virility definitely kept a girl on her toes but in a good way.

Inside the phone was ringing, and Lana went to answer it.

“Buy the travel agency. Lana was just asking me if I was really going to sell out to Janet’s bosses.”

While the shift wasn’t overt enough for me to be sure, I thought I felt a hint of his pulling back a little. “And what did you tell her?”

“That it was all up in the air, that I didn’t know if they’d even want the place.”

“Why wouldn’t they want it? Gabby’s Island Adventures is aces. You’re the tops, Toots.” His tone was frank, matter-of-fact. “You’ve even made my business profitable since you took over my bookings.”

“You’re biased, Dawson. You do have a business interest here yourself.”

10 things most people don’t know about me

1. There are special pieces of music and certain scenes in movies that always make me cry. I particularly love Handel’s Water Music, as it was the first piece of music I heard after saying my wedding vows. Whenever I hear it, I’m always reminded of that beautiful day. And I always cry during the final scene of The Way We Were. That iconic scene when Katie brushes Hubbell’s hair off his forehead – so poignant, it gets me every time!

2. I hate spiders! I usually have a ‘live and let live’ cleaning policy (dust bunnies just love me), but when it comes to spiders, ugh! I’ve always found them to be creepy, they have too many legs, they gotta go! My apologies to all the spider lovers out there.

3. I need my alone time to recharge my batteries. I enjoy spending time alone, reading or listening to music or working on my next novel. I find it helps me to regenerate and gives me time and space to take stock of my day, and think about where I want to go from here.

4. I have calendars in almost every room of my house. I owned a wedding and event coordination company, so organization is my middle name, hence all the calendars. Plus, I am getting older and just can’t remember everything anymore, so I have to write everything on those calendars.

5. I love cats and have cared for them all my life but am now allergic to them (drat!) I’ve had cats as pets for as long as I can remember, but now, due to a strange twist of fate, my nose starts running, I sneeze, and feel headachy anytime I’m around them, which makes me very sad, because their purrs are so comforting and stroking them is a great way to relieve stress.

6. I’ve always wanted to learn how to ballroom dance. I love watching the couples float around the dance floor, I have seen every Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers movie at least a dozen times, I would love to learn how they do it. And those gowns! Wow! I want to try it, just once, to see how it feels and be completely in the music and the moment. But as I’m hindered by two left feet, that’s just not going to happen.

7. I love classic movies and Big Band music. Yep, I’m a big fan of Casablanca, Pride & Prejudice, as well as hundreds of black & white movies and everything with the dapper and amazing Cary Grant in it. And Glenn Miller is always on my playlist, in fact Larry & I chose ‘Moonlight Serenade’ as our first dance…he even dipped me at the end! Such a wonderful memory!

8. I love the ocean and wish I could live on a beach somewhere. This would be a dream come true for me. I’ve always found the feel of the sand and the water inviting, I love the sounds of the waves, I love the scent of the salty air, and I find I’m my most relaxed and creative when I’m near the water.

9. I’m ultra girly, I love satin and lace and sparkly things. I’m a very tactile person and I like to wear soft, pretty things that make me feel feminine. And I love to sparkle so there’s lots of shiny items in my jewelry box. And I enjoy it when a gentleman holds a door open for me, holds my chair out for me, and treats me like a lady.

10. Before I started my writing career, I worked as an administrative assistant for many companies including the head office of a car rental company, an ice cream company, a bank, and a pharmaceutical company. Unfortunately, none of them gave out free samples. Ah well…

If a gold medal was awarded for Worst Day Ever, Laney Calderone would win it today, hands down. She’s just discovered she’s pregnant, her fiancé abruptly dumps her when she tells him, and her new car refuses to start as a brutal snowstorm hits Toronto.

Good Samaritan Tyler Hammond offers to take her home; however, with the heavy snow falling and his patience dwindling, Laney’s gold medal day isn’t over yet.

Storms intensify both outside and in as Laney finds herself inexplicably attracted to this tall, dark and very handsome but infuriating stranger.

Can Laney fight her unwanted yet increasing desire for this man long enough to get through the relentless storm? And will Tyler let her walk out of his life as easily as she came into it?

Laney slammed the door shut then lifted the hood. Now, she thought, what exactly is it I’m supposed to be looking for? Her eyes roamed the assorted engine circuitry wishing she could see a flashing neon sign with the words Push this Button to Restart Engine.

No such luck. The heavy, wet snow covered the engine and she shivered again trying to brace herself against the powerful squalls.

“Need any help?” a deep voice penetrated the howling wind.

Laney heaved another sigh as she looked up and saw someone approaching. “No, of course not!” she snapped, in no mood for stupid questions. “I often come out here late at night during raging blizzards to study the complexities of my car engine! Would you like to join me? Perhaps later we could pop into the coffee shop down the street for a latté and scone, just to finish the evening off right.”

A low chuckle escaped the stranger’s lips. “All right, as you seem to have the situation under control, I’ll leave you to it. Goodnight.”

“Wait —” Through the swirls of snow Laney was now very much aware of the man approaching. Her eyes took in his massive shoulders hidden beneath a black leather jacket, and as he got closer, her gaze wandered higher taking in the full lips creased in a smile, a finely chiselled nose and steel grey eyes that seemed to be twinkling, then thick, dark curls which refused to be flattened by the huge, wet flakes.

About the Author: Born in England to a Monty Python-loving dad and a Lawrence Welk-loving mum – tea drinkers all – we moved to Canada when I was seven. “Say book, say look” my new classmates would hound me just so they could have a good chuckle at my accent. But being incredibly shy, this was a great way for me to make friends.

My love of words and a creative imagination prompted English teachers to urge me to write for a living, especially after I got a letter from the Prime Minister who thanked me for writing to him! So cool for a twelve-year-old!

Through the years, I wrote while I earned a living as an Administrative Assistant in various companies; then I owned a Wedding Coordination business for six years (talk about romance!), all the while being happily married to the love of my life.
These interesting jobs plus wedded bliss gave me oodles of ideas for romantic plot lines, tall, dark and handsome heroes and feisty, beautiful heroines, and, of course, the happily ever afters.

I currently live in Mississauga and spend time with family and friends, and struggle daily with the wine and chocolate that somehow magically appear in my house…

And, amidst the endless cups of strong tea, while the dead parrot sketch and Cole Porter songs whirl around in my brain, I write. I will always write romances because I love creating fascinating characters whose lives I can make completely miserable before I give them their happily ever after.

Solarpunk is a type of optimistic science fiction that imagines a future founded on renewable energies. The seventeen stories in this volume are not dull utopias—they grapple with real issues such as the future and ethics of our food sources, the connection or disconnection between technology and nature, and the interpersonal conflicts that arise no matter how peaceful the world is. In these pages you’ll find a guerilla art installation in Milan, a murder mystery set in a weather manipulation facility, and a world where you are judged by the glow of your solar nanite implants. From an opal mine in Australia to the seed vault at Svalbard, from a wheat farm in Kansas to a crocodile ranch in Malaysia, these are stories of adaptation, ingenuity, and optimism for the future of our world and others. For readers who are tired of dystopias and apocalypses, these visions of a brighter future will be a breath of fresh air.

Daesha’s mission in “Fyrewall” was simple, but that didn’t mean it would be easy to accomplish at all. The only way for her community to survive was if Daesha figured out how to fix the Fyrewall her grandmother had built out of ocean water and other natural materials to shelter their community from the wildfires and air pollution that were destroying the rest of California. I empathized with this character’s struggle to understand technology that she hadn’t built and only half understood. The plot twists in it were fantastic as well. They fit this world that had been dramatically changed by climate change beautifully, and they made me wish for a sequel.

All of the stories in this anthology had fantastic premises. With that being said, there were a few that I would have liked to see explained in a little more detail. For example, “Grow, Give, Repeat” was about a young girl named Alex whose family was struggling to grow enough food to eat on their farm. After losing their previous flock of chickens, the new birds they received were like no other animal I’ve ever heard about before. They were an odd combination of machine and living beings, and I struggled to picture what they might look like or how they could exist. These chickens were such an integral part of the plot that it would have been easier to understand what was going on if I could have imagined them in better detail.

“The Heavenly Dreams of Mechanical Trees” was one of the highlights of this collection for me. In it, a sentient, robotic tree named Ailanthus realized that she was going to stop functioning permanently soon and began a desperate attempt to communicate with the humans who maintained her to see if anyone could fix her before it was too late. I was mesmerized by the thought of a robot fulfilling almost all of the same functions that a real tree does, and I couldn’t wait to find out if Ailanthus’ mission would be successful. The thought of a forest without her kind and patient personality was such a sad prospect.

I’d heartily recommend Glass and Gardens: Solarpunk Summer to anyone who is in the mood for an optimistic vision of what the future might be like for humans and all of the other creatures who live on Earth.
