Lana hunts monsters for a living. She absolutely hates hunting ghosts. So, of course, a friend is calling in a favor and having her hunt a ghost. Not just any ghost, but Old Anne, an urban legend at Movieland, a theme park inspired by the golden age of Hollywood. Worse off, Lana used to work at Movieland, and was fired after she had a… little incident killing three vampires on park property. So in addition to hunting ghosts—which she doesn’t want to do—she has to sneak around and not get noticed by her former coworkers. This is Book 3 of #iHunt. But it’s a completely standalone story—you don’t need to have read the others to get this. Content Warning: Drug use, violence, minor gore, descriptions of anxiety attacks.

Monster hunting is never as easy as it looks in the movies.

There’s nothing quite like trying to catch a bad guy that doesn’t play by the rules. The more I learned about this creature, the more curious I became to discover what it really was and why Lana was having so much trouble figuring out how to fight it. It was one of the most creative parts of the plot, and it kept me guessing until the end.

The pacing would have worked well in a full-length novel, but it felt uneven for a short story because of how much time it took for Lana to discover any clues at all about who or what was killing people at the amusement park. As much as I enjoyed seeing what she was up to again, there was a lot of room here to include more conflict in the storyline.

The fight scenes were exciting. One of the things I’ve enjoyed the most about this series so far is how vulnerable Lana is when she’s fighting something that has supernatural strength. She’s not a superhero, and she has sustained serious injuries from her battles in the past. There is always the very real danger that one of her opponents will kill or severely injure her. While I never like the thought of her being hurt, the genuine tension of not knowing for sure that she’ll be okay keeps me coming back for more.

This is the sequel to iHunt: Killing Monsters in the Gig Economy. It should be read in order.

I’d recommend #iHunt Mayhem in Movieland to anyone who loves gritty books about killing monsters.

That Rat, Carter Janson by Amy Spector – Guest Blog and Giveaway

Long and Short Reviews welcomes Amy Spector who is celebrating the recent release of That Rat, Carter Janson. Leave a comment for a chance to win a copy of the book.

Hello, everyone! This is Amy Spector. I’m excited to be here today on Long and Short Reviews to share little bit about myself, about my new release from Dreamspinner Press, and to give someone a chance to win a copy of That Rat, Carter Janson.

I have always been a huge reader, so I thought it would be fun to share my Top 5 Favorite Books of all time!

1. American Gods by Neil Gaiman – I have loved Neil Gaiman, ever since stumbling across back issues of The Sandman comic book back in college. But of all his novels, American Gods is by far my favorite. At least so far.

2. Dracula by Bram Stoker – This is one of those books I try to make time to reread every few years. My love of the books also has me watching every movie adaption I can find, too.

3. The Count of Monte Christo by Alexandre Dumas — I love stories of revenge. I always remind my husband of this. LOL

4. The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson — Jackson has inspired so many horror writers for a reason. And this particular book, with the POV of someone slowingly succumbing to madness? Possession? It’s brilliant.

5. A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens — I’m a huge Dickens fan, but I have a certain weakness for this particular story. A beautiful story of redemption and Christmas.

There you have it! My Top 5 Favorite Books of all time! What are some of yours?

If you could apologize to someone in your past, who would it be?K/b>

People that live in the past are depressed. People that worry about the future are anxious. I’ve done some immature things to people in the past. Things that I was ashamed of. Those things are in the past and I can’t change what I did. I can only learn from my mistakes and not make them again. So far, I never did.

If you could keep a mythical/ paranormal creature as a pet, what would you have?

A mermaid. In my bathtub. That looks like Darryl Hannah.

How do you keep your writing different from all the others that write in this particular genre?

That’s a great question. I like to do mashups of stories. When people think of monsters, they think of the horror genre. I took that idea and flipped it on its head. I don’t like violence or gore, so I took the idea of monsters and put them in a theme park.

What are the best and worst pieces of writing advice you ever received?

Best: Write every day.
Worst: Write every day.

Are the experiences in this book based on someone you know, or events in your own life?
Every character is a piece of me. Every single character.

Welcome to Monsterland—the scariest place on Earth.

Wyatt Baldwin’s senior year is not going well. His parents divorce, then his dad mysteriously dies. He’s not exactly comfortable with his new stepfather, Carter White, either. An ongoing debate with his best friends Melvin and Howard Drucker over which monster is superior has gotten stale. He’d much rather spend his days with beautiful and popular Jade. However, she’s dating the brash high-school quarterback Nolan, and Wyatt thinks he doesn’t stand a chance.

But everything changes when Wyatt and his friends are invited to attend the grand opening of Monsterland, a groundbreaking theme park where guests can interact with vampires in Vampire Village, be chased by werewolves on the River Run, and walk among the dead in Zombieville.

With real werewolves, vampires and zombies as the main attractions, what could possibly go wrong?

The sky was a sparkling, powder blue, mosquitoes droned lazily over the tepid water, frogs croaked messages while they sunbathed on waxy lily pads. The fire he created burned bright, rabbit roasting on a spit made from hickory, the juices dripping to hiss in the flames. Seven of them lay in scattered repose, enjoying the late afternoon lull—two napped, the others tossed a stuffed fur in the form of a ball around the clearing, hooting with amusement when it rolled into the brush. They traveled in a pack, his group, his makeshift family, foraging together, hiding in plain sight. It had been that way for generations. But the glades were getting smaller, the humans invasive.

The sun started its slow descent into the horizon, hot pink and lilac clouds rippling against the empty canvas of the sky. Their color deepened as the sky filled, the rosy hue morphing into a burnt orange as the sun hid behind the condensation. The air thickened, moisture causing the leaves to lie heavily against the branches. Here and there, fireflies lit the gloom, doing a placid ballet in the humid air. The men moved closer as the sun sank into the western treetops, the fading sky promising another clear day tomorrow in the Everglades despite the moving ceiling of clouds.

A lone hawk cried out, disturbing the peace of the glade. Huge birds answered, flapping their wings, creating a cacophony of swamp sounds. The area became a concerto of animals responding to the disruption of their home—wild screams, squeaks, and complaints of the invasion of their territory.

The lead male stood, his head tilted. He heard it again. It was music, the strange organization of sounds, predictable as well as dangerous. Where those rhythms originated meant only one thing—they were not alone. They all rose, tense and alert, searching the waterway. Billy pointed, his dirty hands silently parting an outcropping of trees to expose a flat-bottom boat with strangers floating slowly toward them. It was filled with people, excitedly searching the banks of the swamp, their expensive khaki bush clothes ringed with sweat. Many held huge cameras. It was obviously a film crew, invasive, nosy individuals looking for something, anything, to enhance their lives. Men’s voices drifted on the turgid air. Billy stood, sniffing, his mates following suit. He glanced at the sky, gauging the time, his eyes opening wide. It was late. The bald top of the moon peeked over the ridge in the south, the sky graying to twilight with each passing second. Night came fast and furious in the swamp, dropping a curtain of darkness, extinguishing all light except for the beacon of the full moon. That chalk-white orb floated upward, indifferent to the consequences of its innocent victims. A halo of lighter blue surrounded the globe, limning the trees silver, the cobwebs in the trees becoming chains of dripping diamonds in the coming night.

Kinsley just wanted to have some fun for a change. Then she wakes up in a stranger’s bed, with her bridesmaid dress on backward and a hazy memory of what happened at her friend’s wedding. With a quick escape, she can get back to her predictable life. But then she meets her new boss—the same guy she’d woken up next to—and seeing him with a clear head doesn’t make him any less attractive.

Mixing business with pleasure has never been Damon’s style, and easily avoided, but the hotel he just bought comes with an unexpected perk—its manager. “Sensible” Kinsley today is as alluring as “impulsive” Kinsley was the night before, and she talks him into a deal. If she can turn around the hotel by the end of summer, he won’t tear it down to put up a more profitable casino.

Their plan is simple…until falling for each other becomes more than they bargained for.

Kinsley jumped up and launched herself into his arms. “Thank you,” she breathed into his shoulder. “Thank you for believing in me.”

Damon stilled. Then his arms slowly came around her and he pressed her to his chest. “You’re welcome,” he whispered in her hair.

She made no movement to separate herself from his embrace. She knew it was wrong—highly inappropriate, actually—to be standing in her office, burrowing in her boss’s chest like a chipmunk. Anyone could barge in. But he felt so nice, so warm with that freshly showered, masculine scent all his own. She couldn’t resist staying in his arms a little longer until good sense entered her brain again.

Kinsley dropped her arms and they both slowly drew apart. Damon didn’t look happy. In fact, his jaw was clenched so tight, it looked like it might shatter. She just hoped this little overly affectionate stunt didn’t cost her her job.

“Sorry,” she muttered, her face growing hotter with every passing second. “Sometimes I let my emotions get carried away. I didn’t mean to…jump you. It’s just that I’m so grateful.”

Damon remained silent, his brows furrowed together as if contemplating how to tactfully fire her without hurting her feelings.

“It, uh, won’t happen again,” she assured him. “The hugging part, not the thanking you part.”

“I know what part you were referring to,” he growled. She swallowed. “Oh, right. Of course. Sorry for the… Sorry.” Somebody tape my mouth closed now.

Damon held up his hands in a time-out sign. “We’re off the clock, right?” he asked.

Dread had her hesitating. Was he really going to fire her? She nodded and slowly met his steel-blue eyes.

Then before she could blink, Damon St. James pulled her back into his arms and kissed her.

Top Ten Tuesday: Books I Liked But Can’t Remember Anything About

Hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl

My reading habits involve me diving into a wide variety of genres: young adult, non-fiction, science fiction, fantasy, mysteries, horror, and even the occasional romance novel.

Most of the time, I can remember the basic plot of a book long after I’ve finished it even if I forget some of the details in it. There are times when I forget everything about a story other than the fact that I’ve read it, though, and that is why I won’t be commenting about anything on the list below like I normally do on Top Ten Tuesday posts.

The only facts I can tell you about any of them is that I know I read and enjoyed them at one point!

1. One Hundred Years of Solitude by Gabriel García Márquez.

2. The Joy Luck Club by Amy Tan.

3. The Call of the Wild by Jack London.

4. I, Robot by Isaac Asimov.

9. The Hundred-Year-Old Man Who Climbed out of the Window and Disappeared by Jonas Jonasson.

Bases Loaded by Sean Michael – Guest Blog

Long and Short Reviews welcomes Sean Michael who is visiting with us today to celebrate not only the release of his newest book but also another special day!

~~~~~~
Thank you to LASR for hosting me today – on my birthday!
One of the characters in Bases Loaded is Cajun to the bone and it was a lot of fun peppering his language with Cajun terms. As it’s my birthday today, I thought I’d look up a Cajun cake recipe that Jean might possibly make for me.
I found this one at AllRecipes and it sounds yummy.
Ingredients
Cake
3 cups all-purpose flour
1 1/2 cups white sugar
2 teaspoons baking soda
1/4 teaspoon salt
2 eggs
1 (20 ounce) can crushed pineapple with juice
Topping:
3/4 cup white sugar
3/4 cup evaporated milk
1/2 cup margarine
1 cup chopped pecans
1 1/2 cups flaked coconut
Directions
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease and flour a 9×13-inch pan.
In a large bowl, sift together flour, 1 1/2 cup sugar, salt and baking soda. Add eggs, pineapple, and juice. Mix at low speed until well blended.
I hope you like the cake if you try it, and I especially hope you like the boys from Bases Loaded!
Can they survive the off-season and keep from striking out?
Baseball player Brett must get rehabilitation for his shoulder if he wants another season in the Major League. He and his partner, Benj, take off to the boonies to stay with physical therapist Ralph, a tough-talking, routine-setting guy, and Jean, Ralph’s Cajun lover, who cooks as well as he loves.
Brett and Ralph butt heads from the beginning. Ralph wants Brett to be more in touch with his feelings; Brett wants Ralph to give him his therapy and leave him alone. Benj and Jean get along far better, with Jean showing Benj around the kitchen and reassuring him when things with Brett get strained.
Before Ralph can even begin to work on Brett’s shoulder, though, Brett faces an even more difficult physical challenge, one that does more than threaten his career. He and Benj have to work through some tough issues, making decisions that will affect the rest of their lives together. Their gradual friendship with Ralph and Jean helps them through the bad times, but even that might not be enough to pull them through.
It might come from shapeshifters in love (“Stakes & Adders”). Hell, it could even come from…you’ve guessed it, Hell. (“667, Evil and Then Some”). But whether you’re cruising a narrow boat down an English canal (“The Way It Is”) or taking a break on an idyllic French lakeside (“Dead & Breakfast”), justice is like the endings in these stories. You never see it coming.
Listening to what a character doesn’t say is sometimes just as important to listening to what they do say.
In “Something Rather Fishy,” Stevie and her accomplice, Patti, ran multiple scams on unsuspecting strangers in order to steal their money or sell them products that were nothing at all like what was advertised. What I enjoyed the most about their scams was how much thought was put into them. Stevie put a lot of time into figuring out how to get people to do what she wanted without them realizing what was happening. I definitely didn’t see the ending coming, and that was a good thing. It fit the tone perfectly while still being a pleasant surprise.
There were some tales in this collection that I thought could have used more clues about what was really going on in them. For example, “The Great Rivorsky” showed what happened when a magician’s attempt to accomplish that famous trick involving sawing a woman in half didn’t go as he had planned. As amused as I was by the main character’s narration, I needed more details about what was going on to figure out why his assistant was so badly injured and who might have been responsible for it.
A small, sleepy town isn’t typically where anyone would expect to find three murders over the course of a short period of time, but that’s exactly what happened in “The Longboat Cove Murders.” The muted reactions of the townsfolk to the first few murders shocked me. They also made me curious to find out what happened and why no one was panicking about the suddenly high death rate in their community.
I’d recommend Dead and Breakfast & Other Stories to anyone who is in the mood for mysteries that require their audience to pay close attention to detail in order to solve them.
After several dead end dates and a relationship with a divorced man, who’s not really free, she decides to swear off men for the summer. Things go well until she meets Dunkin but thankfully they decide to remain friends.
I really enjoyed this book. It is lighthearted and goes from one hilarious episode to another. Dunkin and Shayla play off one another in a series of one upmanship where they try to embarrass each other. Shayla gets involved in various disastrous events and her gay friend Brice involves her in his on again – off again relationship and after the dust has cleared everyone is able to see the funny side of things.
There’s the usual ex girlfriend, ex boyfriend relationship interference which add a bit of spice to the story. There’s also an air of mystery in a will they – won’t they get together and this is not resolved until the end. Even then a disastrous decision by Shayla could make it go either way.
As I got involved with the characters and the story I couldn’t help thinking it reminded me of Janet Evanovich’s style of writing. Amusing story with a light hearted approach and an underlying serious thread.
Ruth and Killian had excellent chemistry. It was nice to see them get to know each other for a little while in the beginning before anything physical happened between them. Due to how shy they both were about sharing certain important parts of their pasts, this was a smart decision on the author’s part. It also gave me a chance to figure out their personalities right away which was something I was glad I got to do.
I would have liked to see way more time spent on the world building. Ruth’s background was especially confusing because of how little she knew about her powers, why she had them, or what she was capable of. While I didn’t expect every question about her background to be answered, it would have been helpful to at least have a basic understanding of how powerful she was and what, if anything, she wasn’t able to do. I was also never quite sure how her abilities fit into what life in this universe is like in general, and that made it difficult to imagine how certain scenes played out.
With that being said, Killian’s backstory was much more well-developed. I enjoyed the process of slowly uncovering clues about what happened to her in the past and why she was so jumpy in certain situations. Her extraordinarily cautious nature made perfect sense to me once I’d come up with an educated guess about what had caused it. I couldn’t wait to find out if my theory was correct and was pleased with how much thought I had to put into this aspect of the plot.
I’d recommend Ruthless to fans of urban fantasy and erotic tales alike.
Saturday Seven 3: Books we’ve reviewed that make me think of summer
I live in the northeast and it’s been cold and snowy for a few months now. I’m SO ready for summer… so I took a look at the covers of books we’ve reviewed that transport me away someone warmer and sunny.  Click the cover to read our reviews.
1. Playing by the Greek’s Rules by Sarah Morgan
Seriously … does it get any more “summer” than that? Beach, check. Sunshine, check. Hot guy in a swimsuit, check. Even better, it sounds like the story is solid based on the FIVE STAR review our reviewer gave it. I think I’ll have to check this one out!
2. Turning the Tides by Nell Castle
Nothing says “summer” like a palm tree. Yeah, I know it’s got that ominous set of eyes at the top, but … palm trees!
3. Laked by J L Wilson
LAKE! Dock! That just screams summer. And I’m incredibly intrigued by Excalibur hanging out there in the middle of the water. And the character names! Summer *and* King Arthur… putting this one on my TBR right now.
