When wannabe sub Jennifer Berklee calls him Master and begs him to flog her, PI Logan Powell knows all his military training won’t be enough to keep his jaded heart safe.

Private investigator Logan Powell does the women of the world a favor by avoiding emotional entanglements. They deserve to be loved and cherished. And he’s not capable of it.

That belief is challenged when he sees Jennifer Berklee at a BDSM play party. The innocent wannabe sub is everything he wants to avoid. He fears all his previous military training won’t be enough to keep his jaded heart safe.

Jennifer has been interested in BDSM since she first heard about it. And after her engagement ends in an embarrassing disaster, she’s determined never to settle again.

But when the stunningly sexy Dom Logan Powell offers to scene with her, she is overwhelmed and flees.

One evening, Logan and Jennifer are set up by well-meaning friends. This time, Logan is determined not to let her go. Jennifer will submit to him, no matter the cost to either of them.

Sierra Cartwright is one of my favorite authors. Sadly, Initiation is not one of my favorite books by her, though I’m not sorry I read it. Let me explain:

In the beginning, I was drawn into the story by two intriguing characters. Logan was a Dom with a mysterious scar on his face and piercing green eyes. Jennifer was a novice who had seen BDSM in a movie and wanted to try. While Logan felt a bit distant to me, Jennifer loved her coffee with lots of sugar and cream and enjoyed eating pastries, which made her realistic. I was eager to read and discover how he would earn her trust. The story didn’t quite meet my expectations. It was good but, having read many books by this author, I was expecting more.

I found the emotional connection between the characters, disappointing. For me, their love story felt like a negotiation. He’d Dom her and she’d do her own thing and sex would occur in the middle because they had the hots for each other. I missed depth in these two characters. I missed cheering for their love. I missed feeling more. This is a short story and maybe the author felt rushed to get “the good stuff” in but as a reader, I needed to see the buildup as much as the result.

Notwithstanding the shortfall in the emotional department, it didn’t do the same in the bedroom. Ms. Cartwright is in my opinion one of the best BDSM authors published. Her sex scenes are detailed and exquisitely written, this is BDSM that feels real and transported me to that moment with the characters. Readers who simply want a taste of her writing to test the heat, this will be a good one to recommend.

In conclusion, Initiation was a scorching read.

mediakit_bookcover_asmodius…Here again, his natural figure crouched beside her in the dank darkness of the cave, watching her in silence as she slept, struggling with cravings which were new to him, both tender and violent, and which he could only really compare to hunger… (from ASMODEUS)

On the cusp of the Great War, an even more pitched battle is waged in the furthest corner of the Nordic highlands, the final chapter of a centuries-old rivalry, pitting a troubled bloodline of thieves, journeyman, and politicians against the last and greatest dragon of the hemisphere, Asmodeus.

Until now, the source of this antagonism has been a single gemstone, the fabled shamir, whose history traces to the coffers of King Solomon. The present clash, however, has been sparked by the emergence of an even more desirable, more defiant, and more powerful force than that.

Inspired by the golden legend of St. Margaret, Brooks Hansen’s Asmodeus is a masterfully woven tapestry of history, myth, and fantasy, in the tradition of J.R.R.Tolkien, Bram Stoker, and C.S. Lewis. By turns a romance, an adventure, and the darkest imaginable Gothic, his tale is also, as seen through the eyes of the maiden Margrét, an unflinching exploration of our divided nature — what makes us beasts, what makes us human, and what makes us divine.

His golden eyes flicked open, blinked, and narrowed to a squint as he finally lifted up his great, horned head. He shrugged the veil of wings. He uncoiled from his most precious gem and lumbered upward, following the airborne trail up through the high tunnel to the opening just beside the cataract.

Only his muzzle appeared at first, shining like tar in the slanting sunlight, but even that merest of appearances stirred notice among the hovering hawks and vultures: Look. Be warned and wary. The master had awakened.

His head slid further out, taking in the day. The clouds had lifted. The sky was polished glass, but the familiar whisper was still there, coming from below. Down on the near shore of the inlet was a scuttled boat. Again his eyes narrowed, trying to figure from the tides just how long ago the wreck had occurred, and whether its victims were still on premise. He hoped not. Men had their place, but it wasn’t here.

…He crawled further out onto the ledge and extended his neck toward the curtain of water, which was fuller today than usual, gushing down from the mountains after all that rain. He helped himself to several gulps. He let the bracing cold beat on his head a while, then shook free with a glistening, majestic explosion, lifted his wings and leapt. He glided most of the way down, turning three wide circles in the crux of the fjord, his great spanned shadow dashing along the cliff-side, flicking across the cataract, then across the blue surface below, around and up and around again three times before finally re-meeting him, claw to claw, on the strand beside the boat…

Jill Farrell’s college reunion is coming up, but she wants no part of it. The man she once loved, Swedish exchange student Max Kallstrom, is rumored to be attending, but that doesn’t tempt her as Max disappeared from her life the night before the graduation, and has never been heard from since.

When her ex-husband, Andrew Denton, knocks on her door and announces he wants to make nice, and, “oh, by the way, one of their class alumni might be a murderer”, Jill’s resolve to avoid the event hardens.

Jill shuts Andrew’s efforts to reconnect down, and tries to put Max out of her mind. And that’s that, until a second man knocks on her door, and the emotions of a time long ago overtakes her. Max Kallstrom tells Jill she’s the reason he has come to California. He asks her to please let him explain why she hasn’t heard from him for fifteen long years.

She’s willing to listen to what he has to say, but immediately realizes that her memories must guide her through a wrenching and dangerous few days. While her heart remembers a handsome young lover, she and her classmates are all different people now, and the reality of a murdered friend proves she can’t trust everyone.

What’s not so clear is if she should trust anyone . . . especially Max Kallstrom.

Once again, Emelle Gamble has written a book that enthralls.

From the first, I was wrapped up in Jill’s life. The story starts with her decision to move her mother, who has Alzheimer’s, into a nursing home. It utterly breaks her heart (both having to move her and realizing that her mother doesn’t really even see her or know her anymore), and it broke mine as well. Then one after another, more heart-rending things happen. Her ex wants to talk to her, her one true love, Max stops by and wants to explain why he left her … and then a friend is murdered.

Poor Jill has way too much going on and doesn’t know where to turn. Thankfully, she has her best friend, Carly to talk to, along with Carly’s husband, Ham. Things start escalating pretty quickly both with Max and the murder mystery. All fingers point to Max as the bad guy, but she has a hard time thinking he could commit murder. In fact, she knows she’s falling in love all over again.

Ms. Gamble has populated the story with exceptionally real characters, all different and unique, with character strengths and flaws. There are plenty of secondary characters (it does involve a class reunion, after all). The town, too, is well written and the descriptions are all clear without being over bearing. It was a nail-biting experience and the reveal at the end was a huge surprise! Well done, Ms. Gamble!

If you’re looking for a strong, well-written romantic suspense that will keep you guessing, I recommend The Second Man. It’s definitely a winner.

Clover Van Camp meets her match when her plans to turn a struggling Arizona town into a Wild West resort are blocked by the hunky mayor, retired bull rider Danny Leigh. To make things more complicated, this isn’t the first time the two of them have tangled…

Danny knows Clover usually gets her way, but this time he won’t back down. He’s got a few things to answer for and a town to save. Besides, reconnecting with his former fling has benefits, as long as he doesn’t get distracted by their mutual attraction. Will Danny and Clover let their ambition keep their hearts divided?

I loved the movie Pretty Woman and this book was just as good but better because of a cleverly introduced stray dog that was just as much a main character as the humans. Angel Crossing was a place where I would love to live and raise my family along with the close knit townsfolk that stand by one another and have each other’s backs. Danny’s family and friends were well developed characters that enhanced the love story between Clover and Danny.

The book moved along at a reasonably steady pace that kept my interest and had me anticipating each encounter between Clover and Danny. I wasn’t sure if it was going to make me laugh, annoy me or give me a temporary glow. This is a testimony to Ms. Hormel’s writing skills because she was able to pull at all my emotions. It was captivating to read how Clover and Danny were both out to save a dying town with different methods that weren’t compatible. Yet, was their love strong enough to survive the conflict of interest?

First the heroine, Clover Van Camp, was a controlled by her wealthy mother who wanted her to be nothing more than a beauty queen in her successful clothing fashion company while never letting Clover apply her MBA diploma and help run the company. Clover’s parents are divorced and her father offers her a dream job at his wealthy and successful company that would supposedly give her the opportunity to show that she’s more than just a pretty face. So we have a “Miss Steer Princess” wannabe CFO heroine. Then we have a poor redneck bull riding cowboy turned Mayor of Angel Crossing, Danny Leigh. You’ll have to read why and how he became mayor when he was at the top of his bull riding career.

What we have is a classic “rich versus poor” budding romance. Mr. Van Camp, Clover’s father, didn’t think Danny was good enough for his daughter when they first met when they were younger, nor has his opinion of Danny changed years later. Regardless of the fact that her father was never an award-winning father-of-the-year kind of parent, Clover just can’t stop trying to gain her parents’ approval, then or now. I found it annoying but believe me, it was necessary for the finale at the end. While all of this sounds like a typical cliché with some parts of the story being totally predictable, the love story itself still got me. Their romance is the heart of the book.

The Bull Rider’s Redemption was an enjoyable, easy read. It’s definitely one I’d recommend to pass a couple of hours. I do feel that a reader new to the romance genre would totally enjoy this novel. However, an experienced and avid romance book reader would spot the clichés and time-tested, well used plot techniques early on. And, believe me, I did. However, I know if this book was one of the first few romance stories I’d ever read, The Bull Rider’s Redemption would have been listed as one of my favorite books.

The relationship between Nicholas, the main character, and Nicole was complex. They both knew each other better than any other person or machine on earth. This made Nicole’s attempts to kill Nicholas far more deadly and detailed than they might have otherwise been.

I would have liked to see a little more attention paid to Nicholas’ biggest flaw. How it affected him varied from one scene to the next. Sometimes it was written as something minor, while at other times it seemed like it could be the reason why he might not succeed in his mission even if he managed to avoid being murdered by Nicole. Every other part of the storyline was wonderful, so this book would have easily earned a perfect rating from me if I’d known exactly how dangerous this flaw was supposed to be.

There’s something to be said for an ending that leaves a reader wanting more. While all of the major plot points were wrapped up nicely, I found myself returning to the final scene over and over again while I wondered what would happen next. To me, this is a sign of a great book! While I don’t know if Mr. Francis will be writing the sequel that could so easily flow from how he ended things, I’d sure like to read it if he does.

Sibling Rivalry: A Short Story is a great choice for anyone who loves science fiction that asks hard questions about sentience and what it really means to make ethical choices.

Equals A Study In Seduction

By Claire’s calculations, Fox is the perfect man to satisfy her sensual curiosity. In Fox’s estimation, Claire is the perfect woman to prove his mastery of the ton. But the one thing neither of them counted on is love . . .

SO “un-ton” to let society see her intelligence and, of all things, in math! But that is Lady Claire, the bluestocking sister of the upstart American who inherited an English Dukedom. Claire is determined to fulfill her promise to her now-dead mother and also fulfill her dream of discussing math with the great math scholars in England — a challenge, to be sure.  She does as the old duchess of Durham insists and makes the social scene, but she’s just plain not husband hunting.

Then, Maximillian Fredick DeVere, Lord Fox returns to the social scene after being jilted by his beautiful fiancé. He is the epitome of ton. He is a winner in sports and with women and hires someone to do math things for him. With his Male Pride smarting from being jilted, he makes a horrid bet with a supposed friend. The bet involves Fox’s much-loved hunting dog and Lady Claire. He just HAS to win, but he failed to take into account his heart’s feelings; after all, he’d never had any trouble with his heart being involved with his decisions before. Moreover, when his rank, wealth, face and body failed to impress Lady Claire, he is flabbergasted.

The BET keeps him trying even though to Lady Claire he is “not an equation worth solving.” However, when his kiss short circuits her brain and wakes up her body to passion, desire, and lust, Lady Claire has to regroup. She is floundering in unknown territory. How these two find their happy-ever-after captivates.

The side stories of Lady Claire’s siblings and Society’s outrage yet fascination with them enhances the story and makes one giggle at times.

Maya Rodale does a wonderful job of weaving a subtle humor through the story that made this reader smile often. Her writing is delightful, entertaining, yet encompasses a great theme of two lovers who each are willing to give up something super important to see that the other is a winner. Definitely a GOOD READ!

This is an interesting and highly erotic short story. I was a little puzzled by the flow of this short story. Ryan and Scott meet in the first few pages, but then the author whizzes through their dating at a dizzying speed and then spends the rest of the short story proceeding to jump back in time with flashbacks, then back to the “present” – which is actually a number of months after the opening scene. While exceedingly different, I managed to follow along decently enough. I just was puzzled and question why the author didn’t just simply tell the story of Ryan and Scott beginning and moving on in their relationship. The flashbacks are brief and certainly add to the story, but the time-hopping did jar me a number of times for the pacing and flow of the overall story.

I did enjoy both Ryan and Scott’s characters. I feel they worked together remarkably well and I enjoyed reading about their sexual escapades. I liked how neither man was purely a top or bottom – they share the power in the relationship fairly equally and this vibe helped me greatly enjoy their sex and interactions.

This story is certainly short enough that I could read it in one sitting and found it a spicy, sexy romp that was a lovely break from real life. Readers looking for a different style of story should certainly give this one a try.

Can love between a rich girl and a bastard survive without someone losing it all?

Emily Minton and Shelley Springfield continue their fabulous Grim Bastards MC series with book two, Filthy Bastard.

You could tell Brew and Addy had something gong on back in Dirty Bastard, and the first part of their story does coincide with that book. It was also obvious that there was something troubling happening with Addy’s family, but as we learned in this story, Brew had his own family baggage. These two had an instant connection but with so much to overcome at times their problems seemed unsurmmountable.

Filthy Bastard was a raw, gritty and completely enthralling read. Brew and Addy grabbed my attention from beginning to end. I was rooting for them and crying when the sad parts tugged at my heart. This was a sexy story and most importanly it was full of feeling. The one aspect that I disliked and kind of considered cheating was when Brew was turning to the club girls for relief. They weren’t exactly together at that point but in my mind they were already the perfect couple, so I just didn’t think it was right. Still above all, I loved this book and am so looking forward to the next one in the series. This book / series will definitely appeal to anyone who reads biker romance.

Who doesn’t love a story with a main character who’s an animal? In this story, it’s a ginger tabby named Oliver and he’s the narrator of the tale, too. As a cat owner, I was completely won over from page one and things only got better as the story progressed.

This story has something of everything, humor, some sadness, a wonderful setting that compliments the Christmas theme so well, and some down on their luck inhabitants whose lives are to be quickly transformed.

As all Christmas stories should be, this one is about finding joy and miracles when you least expect it. The sick child grows strong; the young couple without enough money to heat their home find dream jobs, and even kittens find perfect homes. All things are possible in this story but it’s not without the help of Oliver who seems to have a knack for being in the right place at the right time.

I loved the way Oliver interacted with his fellow cats and his frustration as he struggled to get humans to understand what he was showing them.
