In 1914, as rumors of war float across Europe, Edna Ferber travels to Budapest with Winifred Moss, a famous London suffragette, to visit the homeland of her dead father and to see the sights. Author Edna is fascinated by ancient Emperor Franz Joseph and by the faltering Austro-Hungarian Empire, its pomp and circumstance so removed from the daily life of the people she meets. Sitting daily in the Café Europa at her hotel, she listens to unfettered Hearst reporter Harold Gibbon as he predicts the coming war and the end of feudalistic life in Europe while patrons chatter.

The drug should not be taken by women who have a poor conjugal life due to such high in calorie food taken. tadalafil online no prescription In a few cases the medication class of blood stream and therefore purchase viagra in canada oral organization the nerve. Then a shocking murder in a midnight garden changes everything.

Headstrong Cassandra Blaine is supposed to marry into the Austrian nobility in one of those arranged matches like Consuela Vanderbilt’s still popular with wealthy American parents eager for titles and impoverished European nobility who have them to offer. But Cassandra is murdered, and her former lover, the dashing Hungarian Endre Molnár, is the prime suspect. Taken with the young man and convinced of his innocence, Edna begins investigating with the help of Winifred and two avant-garde Hungarian artists. Meanwhile possible war with Serbia is the topic of the day as Archduke Franz Ferdinand prepares to head to Sarajevo. While the world braces for disaster, Edna uncovers the truth –and it scares her.

Set in the early 1900s, this series features a female reporter-slash-investigator out to solve murders.

Edna Ferber travels to Budapest along with a well-known suffragette. They stay near the famed ‘Café Europa,’ a restaurant at the heart of the city in several different respects. Most importantly, its the place to hear all of the news of the day. It is there that Ferber runs into the American heiress, Cassandra Blaine, who is almost immediately murdered.

Ferber is on the case. From this point forward, Café Europa proceeds to deliver a classic type murder mystery, plus a little more. The location is exotic, reference to historic events sets it all in its historic time, and the motivation to solve the crime grows steadily throughout. Sadly, I found I didn’t care quite enough for the Heiress, and so failed to feel much motivation to solve her death. However, clearing an innocent man becomes the focus, and will keep readers’ interest. I have read more riveting mysteries, though.

Those interested in the history of the time will be fascinated not only by events, but by attitudes. Mr. Ifkovic creates an amazing and believable aura; we know the doom that is coming, but somehow, still feel the desperateness of the times, the anxiety, and even the doubt. Details as small as clothing and food are noted and somehow, in this book we ‘see’ the times so clearly. Beautifully written, it is very readable and quite worthwhile.

Peter’s new investment in a three-story building on the same block as Damon’s bar offers Toby the opportunity of having a studio close to home. It also gives Peter and Christian a home they’ve made together, which Peter hopes will bring them closer together.

A former soldier, Christian has a hard time letting go and finding his subspace. It’s going to take a lot to break the conditioning he’s learned in the Army. Peter is stubborn, though, and he’s seriously falling for his strong sub.

Will yet another attack bring down two couples this time?

Peter and Christian are excited to finally have the renovations of their new building completed. The café Christian will run “Chip and Drip” suits their purposes perfectly. The top floor will be their new home, and best of all the middle floor is a perfect studio for Toby, their friend. Toby and Damon have had it rough lately, and Damon is almost as excited as Toby is that there’s now a safe place surrounded by their friends where Toby can do what he loves – sculpt. Their enemy is still out there though, and a threat to all Toby and Damon hold dear.

This is the next installment of the Beer and Clay series. While it’s sensible to have read the previous stories it’s not strictly necessary. The characters are well-introduced and there’s not a massive amount of background to info-dump on the reader. I feel anyone could pick up with this story and still enjoy it thoroughly. I loved the better understanding we’re given of both Peter and Christian as individuals, and the deeper look we’re given into their relationship. Both men have been active in Damon and Toby’s lives in the previous books and I’ve been keenly interested in Peter and Christian for a while now. Here, we’re finally shown a lot more of both men and I’ve loved this.

I really love what a complicated character Christian is. Peter is perfect for him, but Christian still has such a story to tell. He’s a wonderfully wounded ex-soldier, one who is new to the whole Dom/sub lifestyle and has plenty to learn about the life and himself. His journey is fascinating to watch and I dearly love his character.

I loved exploring both couples’ relationships deeper and learning more about all four characters. There are some satisfying plot conclusions, but readers new to these books will easily be able to pick up from here. A strong, hot read and one I plan to enjoy rereading many times in the future.

Character Creation

My first step in creating characters is to have a clear premise for my story – i.e. a hypothesis that I want to test. This is the really hard part of story writing for me because the options are pretty well endless when you’re starting.
What I use as a starting point, is anything I find “edgy” in my life – that is, whatever makes me feel deeply embarrassed, or fully alive or is fascinating to me.

Reflecting on these feelings, playing them out to extremes in my imagination, then thinking of how I could further deepen and explore and resolve the feeling via a story can lead to a premise. The big test is whether or not I find the premise interesting enough to keep me stimulated, and motivated to sit and write several drafts for a year or more.

The premise for Love By Numbers, ‘Can you use a knowledge of the neuroscience of falling in love, to get in more control of who you fall in love with?’ was fascinating to me because I had read several studies on the ‘brain in love’ and knew that many neuroscientists thought you could take steps to influence or manipulate who you fell in love with. I loved the idea and was super keen to explore it in story form.

The next step is to find the personalities that allow me to explore the premise in its extreme.

In the case of my book, that meant a borderline obsessive girl as the protagonist and a typical unavailable guy she wanted to fall out of love with, and a typical “friend-zoned” guy she wanted to fall in love with for her two love interests.

The next step in my character development process is to interview my characters to get to know them – a process I like to do by speaking out loud and using voice recognition software to capture my first thoughts. I have an over developed inner critic that wants to edit my ideas before they even have a chance to live, so talking rather than typing my character interviews often works for me.

Once I’ve interviewed my characters, I plot the story and even every scene in the story in longhand – and then I sit at my computer, apply bum glue and just write – waiting for that magic moment when the characters start talking to me and taking over the plot.

That doesn’t happen for me right away. It happens little by little until I get to about 30,000 words of my first draft. By then, my characters are usually well and truly running the show. It’s so great when they do.

As they say in the movie Field of Dreams – ‘Build it and they will come’. And just like in the movie, it takes faith to get in and start building a story before your characters move in, but when it happens, you discover why people get so hooked on writing.

How to Fall in Love with Someone YOU Choose. (Why not, if you have a broken man-picker?)

Choose an available compatible guy-friend who doesn’t turn you off and rewire your brains for a hot and heavy romance.

1. Get emotional while watching a sad movie.
2. Share a major adrenaline rush.
3. Be competent at something cool, but don’t make a big deal out of it.
4. Have him provide food from the hunt (a good restaurant will do).
5. Eyegaze until it doesn’t feel weird.
6. Fulfil each other’s primary fantasies within reason and without judgment.
7. Sleep together like stacked spoons.

Repeat the above until love and lust click in. Then send your love brain chemicals into overdrive by not seeing each other. That’s when things really get cooking.

Read an excerpt:

‘Nip it in the bud and run like hell,’ he read from my notepad after I’d had a rant about my suspected limerence problem. ‘Hard to nip something in the bud when it’s already a forty-metre gum tree.’

‘It’s not a forty-metre gum tree. It’s slightly less than that. And anyway, what about you and Holly? You’re almost as bad as me.’

Holly was my high school classmate, flatmate of two years and soccer team-mate. She was our team’s starting striker and I was sweeper, which pretty well sums up our relationship, despite it being the off season. I was sure Nathan was somewhere on the limerence spectrum when it came to Holly — which was probably the real reason why he’d suggested going back to my place when we were on the phone.

‘Well despite the Ryan-labelled box of condoms in your ensuite cupboard which is a bit obsessive,’ (not fair of him to bring this up. I was half drunk watching The Secret and visualising my goals at the time), ‘I think you’re taking this OCD thing too seriously. If we’re obsessive, then half the people in this bar are as well.’

‘Really?’ I had a quick look around. ‘They don’t look obsessive to me.’

‘No one does from this distance.’

I sighed and looked out the window.

‘So, how would you get over Brian?’ Nathan asked gently.

‘Well, according to the experts,’ I said, putting down my New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc and taking the textbook I’d borrowed from the uni library out of my bag, ‘all I have to do is have an intimate relationship with him so I can find his flaws and kick him off the pedestal.’

‘That could be problematic,’ Nathan said. ‘What are your other options?’

‘No contact or total rejection, which isn’t so easy to get unless you try to get it, so the book says.’ I threw the book back in my handbag.

‘I’d go for no contact,’ Nathan said.

‘I can’t. We work for the same company.’

‘That only leaves rejection.’ Nathan’s eyebrows knit together. ‘You’re not going to try to get Brian to reject you, are you?’

‘Of course not! I just have to find a way to stop thinking about him.’

Only I was thinking about him again already.

‘So your only real option is to make a list of his fatal flaws and kick him off the pedestal without being his girlfriend. You have put him on a pedestal, you know.’

I gave Nathan a resigned smile, then tried to list Ryan’s shortcomings in my head. Within seconds, I was back at the wine bar with him, having our third imaginary drink.

‘Tell me your deepest, darkest faults,’ I said as I leant towards him.

‘Only if you tell me yours first’, Ryan replied, making me laugh.

What was I doing? How could I be having another Ryan fantasy already?

‘So you have to do an assignment, right?’ Nathan said, picking up the handout that was in my notepad.

‘Yes.’

‘So you do it on curing love addiction and write twenty pages on Brian’s flaws.’

‘Very funny.’

‘Or maybe you’ll get a lucky break and he’ll be retrenched tomorrow.’

The thought of never seeing Ryan again suddenly sent a chill down my spine, despite it being the one sure way I could get over him.

‘Odyssey won’t retrench him. He makes them too much money,’ I said. ‘But if I survive the restructure, I’ll use my obsessiveness to get over him, not into him. I have to. Otherwise it won’t just be Gran’s ring I’ll be accidently throwing away — it’ll be another year of my life!

After years of abuse and torture at the hands of her father, Katia uses her genetically engineered “gift” to destroy the lab that has been her living hell.

She wakes from the explosion to find she’s been transported more than a hundred years into the future to a new world where nothing makes sense. As handsome and as kind as Dr. Julius Freeman is, Katia doesn’t buy his story that she’s been in a coma, and she certainly doesn’t trust him. She does know, however, that the horrors of her previous life have followed her to this century.

Katia stirs more than strictly professional feelings within Julius, but he, too, harbors a dark secret that could threaten everything building between them. When Julius is attacked and kidnapped, Katia must face her demons and fight like she’s never fought before to save the man she loves.

Imagine a life so unbearable that death is the only release.

This is the only life that Katia has ever known. She has suffered physical, mental, and emotional abuse, and she has the scars to prove it. Frankly, I’m amazed that she can function at all. I must warn readers that Katia’s story does contain some graphic violence. Despite everything that Katia has been through, she still finds beauty in small things and tries to protect innocent people when she can. I admire her strength and kindness, particularly toward children. However her self esteem is very low. She believes that her power makes her evil. When Julius walks into her life, he tries to convince her that she is not the evil being her father tried to shape her into. Will Katia embrace her power, or let it destroy her and the one man she’s ever cared about?

Julius is a very good man who is exceedingly patient with Katia. His tenderness is truly touching. I wasn’t surprised when Katia and Julius developed feelings for each other. However, I think it happened a bit too quickly given the circumstances they met under. When Julius found Katia, she was barely alive and needed a lot of time to recover. Katia is understandably paranoid and suspicious of everyone she meets. She spends a lot of time brooding about this, and I must admit that I began to find those passages a bit repetitive. Although Katia does begin to let her guard down around Julius, most of their time together is spent with him nursing her back to health. Then the tables are turned and Katia has to rescue Julius after he is kidnapped. I would have liked to see them spend more time together on more equal footing in order for their connection to feel more genuine.

The last part of Cursed is very fast paced and had me flying through the pages. Each time I thought Katia and Julius were safe, something else would happen and they were plunged back in danger. I really had no idea how their story would end. The conclusion is satisfying, but I still have some doubts concerning Katia and Julius’ future. I can only hope that Ms. Ross has a sequel in the works to answer my lingering questions.

Overall, I liked Cursed. Katia is a well rounded character who deserves every shred of happiness she can get. I recommend Cursed to anyone who enjoys fast paced science fiction with a bit of romance.

Tyler isn’t sure what to make of the smart, beautiful woman in his arms. If he’d had any idea Jaycee was interested in him, he would have made a move long ago. But each time he’s looked her way, she’s avoided his gaze.

A blissful afternoon at his place seems the start of something special—until objections to their relationship arise from an unexpected source. And Jaycee starts to wonder if sizzling sexual chemistry is enough.

Jaycee loved her Psychology 301 class which is held three days a week. Tyler Johnson always sat in the seat directly in front of her and she never failed to get an eyeful of the handsome solider. The ninety minute class always passed far too quickly, and she never managed to retain a word of the lecture. One class though, she can’t help herself, and before she knows it Tyler is fulfilling her every fantasy.

This is a smoking hot read, fast paced and deliciously naughty. I loved how quickly Tyler and Jaycee came together after both admitted they’d been fantasizing all semester about the other. I felt the chemistry was sizzling and when they finally came together it was satisfying and super hot. I was actually impressed with the small twist half way through. I think the author did a great job of turning a cliché onto it’s head and it gave the whole plot a fresh perspective I really enjoyed.

Readers looking for a fast, sexy short story should definitely give this a try. While at a first glance it might look like a typical “horny solider gets the girl” story I found it to be more than that, and ten times hotter than other, similar, stories. I loved the chemistry and connection between Jaycee and Tyler and will happily reread this story a number of times more. Recommended.

Book I: A Father’s Fate

At one point, on the banks of a confluence where two rivers ran together like closing thighs, there was a certain boatman. This boatman, name of Gur, had a fine long pole (not too bendy, not too strong) with which to move his long wide boat upon the water. Gur slept with his pole, lest it go missing. Then one evening while he was ferrying a few paying passengers from one put-in to the next, Gur’s pole got stuck in thick river-bottom mud and muck and he lost his grip and the pole sank out of sight. Cursing, Gur leapt into the water and dove for the pole. Long minutes passed and Gur’s nubile daughter Guri, at the prow of the boat, began to wail. Gur did not come back up. They found him later downstream. This is how the girl Guri became a very young boatman with a shoddy pole.

The thing about Guri is that she knew everybody. All the fares on her boat. They didn’t necessarily know each other all too often, but everybody knew Guri. And somehow she knew everybody back. She just had a mind for it. Who went with whom and how the families fell out. Names. All the names Guri knew. But only one name made her sing: Tuc. Tuc drank and threw dice, but early in their acquaintance he’d made bold to say that Guri would make a good mother. This observation of Tuc’s about Guri had won her over, so she sang his name in the dark. One syllable songs are short, but carry on the water.

Guri’s favorite disgruntlement was that there was no word for girl boatman. It was poling-upriver hard to get more than a grunt out of half her older passengers, because they didn’t see clear to it being right for her to be doing a man’s job. Tuc suggested ‘boatwoman’, but Guri allowed as how that was more the busty mascot off the bow of a ship than a person who poled for a living. Tuc took to riding with Guri quite frequently. Then one night, he brought her a new pole, and it was a good pole.

Not long after the new pole, Tuc convinced Guri to elope with him a ways downriver to a town where he had prospects. When they got there, they traded the boat and pole for two goats. Guri was better with people than with animals, so Tuc tended the herd while she met and memorized every person she could find. Soon she had so much work taken in to do for folks that what with going to the big, clean houses to perform services inbetweentimes, and attending in good turn to the day’s worth of all the waiting piecemeal work filling their modest house, Guri was too busy to make a baby.

Guri got fed up with being too busy to make a baby and made a baby. Tuc split. Guri’s popularity made her fatherless child the ward of the town. Everybody parented him. That’s why he grew up angry. His name was Gur, after his grandfather. Boy did he have a chip on his shoulder about being told what to do. Everybody told him when and where to jump. Only Guri could make him ask how high. Usually his answer would be jump why? The thing about having a whole village full of parents is that they are going to contradict each other and some of them are bound to be weird people.

Sabinne ‘Saber’ Darrieux’s father, the billionaire CEO of Frontenac Global Security has been kidnapped. His ransom is not cash in a numbered offshore account, or a briefcase of Bearer Bonds but something utterly unique, incredibly valuable, and until recently, hidden away from the world.

The kidnapper seems to know Saber very well, and knows that the next day, through her work as an elite translator she will be in the same location as the Object. She must steal the Object and deliver it to the kidnapper to ransom her father.

Adrian Steele, a British Intelligence agent has just come off of two harrowing missions. Upon returning to London for a well-earned rest, he learns that his friend and fellow agent, has been murdered in Moscow, but not before he made use of a unique Object as a mobile ‘drop site’ for the valuable intelligence he was carrying.

The drop site is traveling from Moscow to England. Steele insists on completing the mission to honor the death of his friend, Gerry Cornell.

At an ultra-chic quasi-diplomatic gathering in a mansion in Windsor, England, Saber and Steele meet and find themselves faced with a powerful, undeniable attraction. But at the moment, this compelling attraction is very inconvenient.

In reality they are at the mansion to check out the security arrangements — for their own reasons — to steal the Object, a Fabergé egg worth thirty million dollars. But who will get to the egg first?

Fabergé eggs are very famous for their unique surprises. Saber and Steele are about to be very surprised, indeed.

And when Saber clashes with Steele; more than sparks will explode!

Fun, quirky and intense, TheFaberge Entanglement is an interesting change from most romantic suspense novels.

I really enjoyed Saber…she’s smart and has some very interesting friends. The book opens in a very light-hearted manner with one of those friends at an…interesting theater show. Though things certainly do intensify over time, thankfully some of that light-heartedness remains. Be warned, though, this does start a little slowly and takes a little time to pick up the pace, but hang in there. It’s worth it!

Steele is pretty amazing and definitely a hottie. I do have to question how quickly things started to get physical (like the bone-melting kiss at their first meet), but in some way I can’t blame Saber for her reaction to the man because he’s yummy!

The storyline was good, though there are a pretty large number of characters to keep track of and the strange, short chapters that move us rapidly from one point-of-view to another made that a little difficult for me.

The strength of this story is in its two main characters. They are three-dimensional, unique and both strong and fun. Even the secondary characters were well drawn, and they are all what really kept me reading. I wonder (hope?) that we see them again. Maybe Saber and Steele should start their own outfit … because I’d definitely read about them again!

Invitations to a fantasy weekend at Hazelle House give the three of them a no-strings-attached chance to make her lumberjack ménage fantasies a reality. But when the weekend is over and the real world—and her former lover—come calling, can her ménage fantasy live in the light of day?

Once again, Heather Rainier has written a sensual romance that is filled with emotions. This love story captured my interest right away.

I loved Violet’s story because I really felt that her character deserved someone who would adore her and heal her broken heart. She had moved to Divine looking for a fresh start after her heart was broken. She had absolutely zero interest in another menage relationship after her last one went so badly and left her with a broken heart and seriously damaged self esteem. Josh and Lucas were secretly in love with her already though after working with her for the past year. A few things happened to help push their relationship into motion. Violet finally said no to her ex-boyfriend’s booty call and Josh and Lucas took their own initiative.

I adored the steamy but playful writing in the plot. I have come to expect Heather Rainier’s writing style to be excellent, developed, and easily paced, and this novel was no exception. The characters were richly developed and ever so likeable. I loved the fantasy weekend and how sweet and protective Josh and Lucas were to Violet. As usual, smokin’ hot sexy times were had by all as the guys did their best to fulfill Violet’s sexual fantasies and to win her heart. I would like to clarify their sexual exploration included some very light BDSM. Also, there were quite a few lighthearted moments and an intriguing glimpse into Joseph whose story is coming up next. His character is so intimidating to say the least, and his lady love was awful cute, so that will be another fun and interesting story.

I really enjoyed this book ! It was a page scorching read like only Heather Rainier can write. I look forward to reading the next book in the series.

There was a time Marissa van Dyke loved Halloween. Then tragedy struck. Now the sight of a jack-o-lantern only reminds her of what she’s lost. In fact, she’d prefer to just hibernate.

But recently her nightmares are becoming too intense to ignore. Dreams filled with horror-movie creatures that come closer to killing her every time. Where these vampires and werewolves are coming from, she doesn’t know. She only knows they’re relentless.

Neil Drigan has no interest in finding a mate. Bind himself to one woman? No thank you. Permanent is for the wolf pack Alpha–his brother. Yet lately he persistently dreams about running, in full wolf form, to save a beautiful woman who smells of flowers–and death.

At first the woman’s identity is a mystery, until he realizes the dreams are a residual imprint of something that really happened. Not only is the woman temptation wrapped in real flesh and blood, she’s still in danger. And the one thing he never thought he wanted.

Marissa van Dyke has nightmares. Really real ones at that. When one steps over the boundary between real and dream, she begins to question her sanity. In this first book in the Mythical Knights series, we meet a team of Templar Knights dedicated to stomping out naughty paranormal types. We also meet a group of hunky werewolves and a coven of vampires that really should know better.

Marissa is a girl who hates Halloween, so dreaming about monsters just doesn’t do it for her. Her parents were murdered on the day and she tries to keep all reminders as far away as possible. When her friend invites her to a Halloween party, she initially says no but as she gets to know a certain hottie werewolf those plans are up for grabs.

Neil Drigan isn’t interested in settling down. Quite the opposite really. But when a certain sexy woman crosses his path, he can’t get her out of his mind-or his dreams. He keeps getting out of his cage on full moons and a mystery surrounding what he’s been up to brings the Templar Knights sniffing around where they don’t need to be.

All isn’t well. A series of blood rapes are happening and everyone is stumped. It will take these supernatural forces all working together to stop it before Marissa’s worst nightmare comes true.

I enjoyed the premise of this book. Monsters, nightmares, Halloween…It was fun. Some of the opportunities I had were the short chapters (I would have made fewer chapters with separations), occasional stilted language and fight scenes that needed more elaboration. There were also a lot of characters and it made it hard to keep up with the story.

Overall, I liked the book. The heat level during the erotic scenes was nice, but again the dialog between the characters was strange. The shifter mate trope was used well and I think the series has some really great potential. Marissa was someone I liked and wanted to see happy and I think Neil may just be her knight in furry armor.
