These are the tales that make up We are but Shadows, that are sure to chill, thrill and ultimately entertain.

The difference between fear and actual danger can seem subtle at times. That doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist though.

Mr. Clarke’s characters don’t always make good decisions, but they did capture my attention. Sylvia Layton in “Someone’s Coming” is a good example of how this author manages to create such intriguing characters in a limited amount of space. Sylvia’s saga is told in the form of diary entries that begin soon after she receives life-altering news. Her reaction to what happens is full of all of the mixed emotions I’d expect from someone in that position, and it made the later plot twists even better than they would have been otherwise.

I was surprised to see that this collection wasn’t being marketed to a young adult audience. The tone and subject matter would work better with those age groups than they do for adults. The plots seemed like they were written for an audience that is not as accustomed to the common tropes in the mystery genre in particular given how easy it was for me to predict what was going to happen in advance.

One of the things I like the most about the horror genre is how it can transform even a completely mundane experience into something unforgettable. The most memorable examples accomplish it by picking places, things, or people that I never would have considered scary before. Mr. Clarke has an intuitive knowledge of what will and won’t work with his audience. With a little more polishing and a clearer understanding of exactly what age group he’s writing for, I could see him becoming a very effective mystery and horror author.

We Are But Shadows is a good choice for anyone in the mood for something spooky this Halloween.

Cailin Gray transfers to the new Atlanta branch of her company to work for the senior vice president, Alex Brannigan. But before her job begins, she allows the anonymity of the big city to lure her into a night of dancing–and the arms of a mystery lover hotter than anything this country girl could imagine. When she wakes alone, his absence hurts more than she thought it would, but not nearly as much as walking into the office Monday morning and discovering her lover is her new, married boss.

Alex has one goal: help his best friend, Sara Beth, keep her inheritance. Their plan included a marriage of convenience–check–taking over the vice president’s position–check–and keeping the platonic state of their relationship secret until their position of power is solidified. That last takes time, but the resulting solitude weighs heavily. Until Cailin. He told himself a single night would have to be enough, but fate had other plans. Now he must choose between keeping his dirty little secret and fulfilling his promise to Sara Beth, or finding the strength to free them all from the secrets that bind them.

This story completely captured me from the very beginning and kept my attention until the very end. Cailin has a naughty side that no one but Alex ever got to experience, and once he got a taste, he did not want to give her up. I can honestly say that the relationship between those two was something out of my fantasies.

Alex is everything I want in man: sexy, strong, reliable and knows what he wants in life. Both his strength and reliability makes him endearing but they can also lead to his downfall especially as he puts others ahead of his own happiness. This is evident throughout the story as he continues to keep secrets. The secrets he keeps will not only effect his life, but can destroy others, so he must sacrifice his happiness and possibly Cailin’s to protect those he loves.

Cailin is a sweetheart who deserves the world. I cannot help but feel for her position. She finally left her husband and was looking for a fresh start to only get thrown into more drama. She clearly wants Alex for more than just a quick one night fling but she knows that her lust is misplaced. She may have been a bad girl that one night, but she refuses to be a person who destroys other’s lives for her own personal needs.

This story plot line is intriguing to say the least. Both Alex and Cailin as well as the supporting characters really do have a unique situation on their hands that requires them to be delicate and try to do what is best for everyone. The secrets in this story are so deep and juicy it is a bit difficult to review as I do not want to spoil it for the readers. This story is one I will hold near and dear to my heart and is well worth reading. I fully intend to read it again.

Craig is happy with his life, even if running his own business and negotiating bank loans can be stressful. The closest thing he’s had to a serious relationship was with Ryan in college. After Ryan moved away, Craig hardly gave him a second thought. When Ryan shows up with Craig’s weekly liquor order, Craig’s thrown off his game and finds himself a little in lust.

Craig and Ryan had messed around together in college, but they’d both moved on. Now Ryan is back from New York and working as a delivery guy. Both have secrets about what they’ve done in the past ten years, but neither can deny the intensity of the attraction that still burns between them.

For a super short story I was delighted by how much plot and character growth was squashed into these brief pages. The author does an excellent job of short, snappy paragraphs that paint vivid scenes for the reader. I found myself catching up quickly on the history simmering between Ryan and Craig, and appreciating how neither man pounced immediately on the other – a very common way for authors to get the story moving. I enjoyed the tease about what had led Ryan back from New York, but would have liked a bit more meat to the snippets of explanation about this. The story of how he’d gone from financial whiz to truck driver was quite interesting and I feel could have been fleshed out just a little more.

Although simple and short, this story had an intriguing complexity to it and I found myself eagerly devouring it all.

Readers who are looking for a plot and character driven, quick read should be pleasantly surprised. While there is plenty of steamy chemistry and sizzling attraction, just the one sex scene means this book isn’t as raunchy as many and is a good way to ease newbie readers – or those who usually are skittish about M/M – and keeps it quite well rounded to my mind. An excellent, fast read and one I found deeply satisfying.

A new teenager in a small, Oregon logging town, Jack Taylor’s bored with school and living in his own head. Walking in the forest, he finds dark mysteries in an old-growth cedar grove near his new home. The story handed down several generations doesn’t tell the tale completely, nor do tales of lurking giants in the trees, an Indian curse, or the abandoned locomotive deep in the woods. As he asks questions of his teachers and local families, he finds himself pushed more and more into a corner from which there is only one way out. With the reluctant help of a local historian, his Physics teacher, a school friend and an ancient logger almost as old as the trees, he begins to put the clues together. The story unravels a community conspiring to hide the entire truth from the world. But, is that wrong? Maybe the world doesn’t need to know.

What can I do to assist canadian viagra http://deeprootsmag.org/2013/09/24/awesome-images-from-hubble-new-insights-into-coma-galaxies/ me not to get this medication? Yet, the thing is that a portion of the men have unfavorably susceptible viagra online österreich response to sildenafil, different meds, nourishments, colors, or additives. Sometimes sleepy towns hold big secrets.

The mystery elements are strong in in this book. Jack discovers a handful of clues about what might be going in in the woods early on, but Mr. Sutton doles the rest of them out sparingly. This technique worked well for the setting, especially once the community’s tendency to isolate itself from the outside world is explained. I don’t know if the author has any intention of writing a sequel, but I’d be interested in reading it if he decides to do so. There is still a lot of unexplored territory in this universe.

It would have been helpful to know more about the personalities and quirks of the characters. Their appearances and occupations are described in detail, but I wasn’t able to figure out much else about any of them. I would have liked to know who was gregarious, shy, talkative, or stubborn. The pacing, plot, and themes were all well done. It was only the lack of character development that held this book back from a higher rating.

Mr. Sutton has a smooth writing style that lured me into the plot immediately. The narrator shares his tale a long time after it took place, so some scenes felt a little more polished than I would have expected from a character who had experienced them recently. This technique worked well for this particular series of events, though, due to how much time the author spent working his way up to the most interesting parts of Jack’s discovery.

I’d recommend On Parson’s Creek to adult readers and older teens alike. This is the kind of novel that can easily cross the threshold between these audiences.

A cold night at a upstate university in New York we meet Melody Wilkins, a hopeless romanticize who accidentally bumps into this cute Paul Newman look-a-like named Kevin.

Next is tough girl Imani Jordan who has a sixth sense and is serious about her education.

Finally, is 6’2″ famed campus football player Lance Dunn, who is no stranger to the ladies on campus.

Since they met at freshman orientation the three have formed a lasting bond of friendship. I found it strange the author didn’t give much of a back story to show the details of how they met and even why they met and became so close. Even a glimpse to what attracted them to each other and brought them together is something I wondered through out the book; hoping the author would touch on it, but it never came. However we do see that the bond the three has built is obviously very strong.

With the title being The Color of Friendship I was expecting a vivid description of the characters, however again the author didn’t give much details. Melody was described as having thick blond curls and being of mixed race. A description of Imani and Lance was lacking.

Melody was naive and seemed to have had a sheltered upbringing. Kevin was very manipulative, possessive and turns out to be abusive. Imani worked my nerves because it seemed she didn’t have a life, she just coached and judged everyone else life. Lance was so shallow and didn’t respect himself or females. He seemed to have the idea that he is on earth to concur every female he met.   I can say he was very adamant about having protected sex. The tickling and raspberries I found weird for a bunch of supposedly mature college kids.

At first the story was pretty slow.  They only talked about who liked who, where everyone was working during the school breaks or going to some type of campus party or event.  Readers need to keep in mind that, due to the setting and age of the characters, profanity and sex are commonplace in this story.  Many times I thought about putting it down, thinking it would be a better read for someone closer to college age because nothing exciting was happening.  I didn’t give up, though, and had hopes that something was going to happen and the author did not let me down.

The story picked up tremendously in the middle. The author described a detailed scene of a football play by play in great detail. There was a love scene where her word usage was impressive. The message about abuse was real and relatable. Even though the story could have been shorter and less drawn out I have to say after I finished I was impressed — it ended up being a pretty good read!

This is a book I would recommend reading to those who like a story that builds up to the interesting fast pace part. There is a sequel, and with the way this book ended I will be reading the second installment.

I love nothing better than a good ghost story set in an old house and The Flip is a creepy tale that keeps you turning the pages.

I liked both the main characters, Julie and Brad. I think most of us can relate to them and their need to make some extra money. In the case of this couple, they’ve been flipping houses. Not smooth sailing but nothing like the house they’ve just purchased. I loved the setting of this story and I could visualize Brad in the house, tearing away at the walls, and discovering more things about the house.

The only thing I didn’t like about this story was the weaving of Brad’s point of view with those of the ghosts, it was a bit jarring at times, and also it wasn’t until later that the book switches back to 1862 where the real tale of the story is unfolded and we learn who these inhabitants are.

I did like that their story was part of the actual history of the area and era which made for some interesting reading. The last third of the book really picked up the pace and I found myself turning the pages just to see if these two would make it out alive, or if the ghosts would destroy them and also the house.

The secondary characters are entertaining too and the dialogue very natural sounding. 398 pages might sound like a daunting read for some people, but the print is large and the pacing quick so even if you’re short on time it’s not a problem. If you love a haunted house story, The Flip is probably a good pick for you.

Will Brian and Trisha let their pasts keep them from finding true happiness? Or will they have the courage to chase the flames that still smoulder between them?

Just like the first book about the Muller boys, Chasing the Flames features a hot romance and hot boys, but this one also has some hot flames that need to be doused – quite literally.

Both main characters are familiar from Bet on It, the first book in the series. Despite that, the book can be easily read as a stand alone since the characters and situations are written detailed enough and enough background is given for the reader to be able to understand the intricate relationships. Because the relationship between Trisha and Brian is indeed intricate!

Trisha is a wonderful character. She’s complex, comes from a sad, abusive background, but she’s fought tooth and nails to succeed. People judge her because of her mother’s mistakes and because in a small town gossip is the main hobby. Few people know her real story and what a wonderful woman she is. One of these people is Brian, with whom she’s been in love for almost three decades. Needless to say, he’s blind to her feelings.

He is also the reason why, for me, this book didn’t quite garner five stars. He was a good character and fun to follow throughout the story. What bothered me was his indecision when it came to his ex-wife. It seemed unconvincing because prior to her showing up at the estate, he was very adamant about how he felt about her.

Brian and his brothers were also members of the local Country Fire Service, and I appreciated the author’s descriptions of the bush fire scenes and the CFS’s efforts to contain the fire. It was wonderfully realistic and very descriptive of Australian landscape and climate.

Seth from Bet On It is still my favorite character in the series, however Chasing the Flames was a wonderful romance that I thoroughly enjoyed. I can’t wait to see what Adnams has in store for the youngest brother, Andrew.

Almost everyone is creative as a child, but only a small percentage of people remember how to access that part of themselves when they grow up. One of the things I enjoyed the most about this novella was seeing how the characters wrestled with their creative sparks. This was my first introduction to Ms. Propps’ work. I was pleased with how thoroughly she seems to understand both artistic culture and her characters.

It would have been helpful if the characters who become romantically involved with one another had had more time to get to know each other platonically first. I understand being wildly attracted to someone you’ve just met, but the emotional side of their relationship moved far too quickly for me to find it believable. Portraying it as a purely sexual matter would have worked better for these particular characters since they’ve just met and only limited information about the rest of their lives was shared.

The science fiction elements of this tale were richly detailed and compelling. I wasn’t quite sure what to expect at first due to how evasive the blurb was about this part of the plot. Not having any advanced knowledge of what would happen turned out to be a good thing, though, given how quickly everything begins to make sense.

I’d recommend In the Garden of Eve to fans of science fiction and romance novels alike.

What happens when two different people from two very different walks of life risk it all by giving into the passion that threatens to consume both of them? Can a woman who only knows how to play it safe give her heart to a man who lives hard and loves harder?

Will she survive The Viper?

This is the kind of book that I love to read! I’ve been a huge Kele Moon fan. I loved her Battered Hearts Series. It was the first time I’d ever read a MMA themed romance and I found myself hopelessly hooked. I enjoyed the series, and Moon’s writing, so much. This book begins a new spin-off series called Untamed Hearts. It lived up to all my expectations and then some.

Fate brings Marcos Rivera crashing into Katie Foster’s life. There is an immediate attraction that neither one of them can deny, even though Marcus tries to shut it down. Of course, Katie is determined so eventually she gets her chance. That part was so romantic.

It’s the typical good girl / bad boy trope that I tend to get into easily. I will say that this one had a great back story for Marcus and his cousin Chuito. Then throw in the angst and the drama of how hard it is for Marcos to catch a break …. anywhere. Yet, what stood out here for me wasn’t so much that as it was the romantic relationship itself and how Katie and Marcos accepted each other without needing to change the fundamentals of who they were. She knew Marcos was a bad boy capable of doing bad things. She still wanted him just the way he was. Now, Marcos does end up being a little reckless in a way; there was that bit of melodrama. But mostly he ended up giving her strength to stand up for herself and to take a chance on them. Oh and less I forget, the sex was hot!

That’s about all I can say without giving anything away. So let me just say that it had a good plot. The writing was smooth and flawless. The book flew by way too fast for me, and I will be going back for another read soon. Lastly, the characters were vibrant, capturing my interest and pulling me into their story. It was easy to have some real feelings for them. Katie was strong, and I couldn’t help but fall in love with Marcos. It was easy to love him.

On a side note, the series continues with Chuito’s book up next. He does have a dark side. I can’t wait. If you liked Moon’s Battered Hearts Series then you’re going to love this one just as much. If not then it can work great as a stand alone book too. It gets a big recommendation from me.

Raised by his mother in the small town of Havlandsby, young Sigurd watches the projektors make their rounds, keeping the town lit and warm in the dark, cold winters, ensuring that water fills the wells. Their communion with the elements is as old as the world itself, but the projektors are losing their influence, and fewer of them are being born. Their duties are slowly being taken over by inanimate objects—the machinae—and the people they serve are fleeing their homes in droves for the cities.

After Sigurd’s mother dies, he joins the exodus to Tigrebyn, the City of Tigers, where he must fend for himself among the petty thieves and heartless merchants. Finally Sigurd meets Ragna, who has taken it upon herself to track and protect the remaining projektors, now punished for practicing the ancient art of projeksjon and labeled conspirators against the Crown. Sigurd’s particular art is nothing as mundane as bringing forth light, warmth, and water. Sigurd can command the very air to transform the sounds in his head into complex musical compositions, conducting an invisible orchestra of instruments and effects.

The professors at the University, who answer to the Queen, wish to use Sigurd’s gift to invent the greatest machina yet—but first they must bend the young man to their will.

Sigurd never knew his father. When his mother dies, they tell him he will have to go live with his uncle, her brother. He doesn’t like that idea, so he leaves the village and moves to the city. You can hide in the city, can’t you?

This story is a mix of machina and magic; the machina are almost steampunk in nature and the magic is done by projeksjon. The author has created a world with have and have-nots. Those that are part of the castle and the university have the machina. Those that don’t live there have to depend on their own skills to get along. The gap between the two groups is large and those who are at the bottom resent it.

Sigurd catches their attention by using a power he doesn’t know he owns. He has also found two more children his age, a brother and a sister and they have unusual powers. They also aren’t aware of it. Not knowing what they are capable of is dangerous. Sigurd somehow causes a fire in the square and becomes a wanted terrorist. He’s still not even sure he’s done it, but he has to hide.

This is a long convoluted tale. The children are caught in the middle because they are orphans. The queen and her consorts are playing games with other people’s lives. Sigurd becomes friends with the lady that leads the revolutionary group. You never really know what’s going on or who’s who.

The author’s words flow well, the story keeps you interested and wondering, and it’s a fast ride to the end. I’m afraid I’m not sure I understood the ending. It was odd to me and left me wondering about the other characters. Maybe I missed something as I read or maybe I needed a more obvious explanation, but I didn’t get it. I did enjoy the read, the world building and the characters. That made it worth reading. Why don’t you give it a try and see what you think?
