An eclectic mash up of styles and genres, this collection features over twenty stories inspired by the ports of call on a 2012 voyage with the Japanese NGO Peace Boat. A Japanese maid in Tokyo, a power hungry vizier in Istanbul and a sailor assailed by ghosts while navigating the Panama Canal are just a few of the varied characters to be found inside.

How much can one really learn about a place or character if you’re only provided the briefest glimpse of what is going on?

Imagine getting to know someone or someplace new over the course of a few paragraphs. While a few entries are a little longer than that, most pack all of their action into extremely small spaces. Several different genres are represented throughout the pages, although none of them are present in every single vignette. Jumping rapidly from one genre to the next kept me on my toes from beginning to end. By the end I learned to prefer the shortest pieces of flash fiction because of how easily they melt into one another.

“Tokyo (1)” is an excellent introduction to this unique book. It follows the thoughts of a young woman whose employers make her stand outside and lure people into their cafe while wearing revealing clothing during a bitterly cold evening. I was mesmerized by the difference between the persona she adapts and what she’s actually thinking as she works. Like all of the tales in this collection, it left me wishing for more when it finished.

A few flash fictions would have worked much better had they been written as traditional short stories instead. The narrator in “Panama” has a paranormal experience while standing on the walkway of a docked ship that initially made me shudder. The idea of encountering what the narrator finds is fascinating, but the concept is too large for this kind of format. A few other tales felt similarly rushed and would have also done better had they been given more time to develop.

Another favourite of mine is “Rome.” In it a bored man who is reluctantly part of a walking tour group discovers something that no one else has seen for many generations. I especially appreciated the abrupt transitions between time periods in this short story because they were so helpful in understanding where the narrator is coming from and why he reacts the way he does in the first few paragraphs.

I’d heartily recommend Peace Boat to anyone in the mood to be swept away into other times and places. This is a well-organized collection that I had a hard time putting down.

‘Twas the night before Halloween, and Fisher Roberts wishes it was over, not being a fan of this or any other holiday. But he tolerates it because his roommate/best friend Hunter Long takes a childish glee in all things Halloween. And Fisher has a vested interest in keeping Hunter happy. If only he could find the nerve to tell his childhood friend that he loves him and has for a very long time.

Fisher thinks Hunter is carrying things a bit far this year, though. First Hunter claims to be a vampire, and he just won’t let the silly joke go. Then he forces Fisher to go to a costumed Halloween party which Fisher would rather avoid, especially when he realizes where it’s being held and whose house it is. Things at Fisher’s job might just be going south, too, when he receives a mysterious summons to report to the editor’s office the next morning. And then Fisher goes and does something stupid — like kissing Hunter!

Running from his fears, Fisher encounters a strange young man with an unusual resemblance to Leonardo di Caprio, who shows him things he never realized before, truths about his life and the people in it.

Can Fisher find his way back to Hunter, and can he find the courage to do what his heart wishes?

Fisher had lived his life as controlled and predictable as possible, except for one factor–Hunter Long his best friend and housemate. Now he must decide on whether he may lose his friend, or learn to live a little and not be so uptight.

Fisher and Hunter really are a dynamic duo, which I enjoyed getting to read about. Both of them have unique stories, to fit their opposite personalities, yet they are able to find common ground and not only become best friends for the better part of their life, but also to nurture the budding feelings they seem to harbor towards one another. Hunter is extremely outgoing and you can tell why people tend to be drawn to him. Fisher on the other hand is more if an introvert preferring a more structured life because of his upbringing. Each have large hearts and want to best for the other, despite their differences, which truly made these two endearing to me.

This was a nice light and playful story, which was exactly what I needed and was looking for. While I really enjoyed the characters, one thing that remained a mystery to me was what Hunter’s being a vampire really had to do with the story. It didn’t seem to play a large role in the story, and I would have enjoyed the story just as much without this element. It did not take away from the story either, because Hunter and Fisher just have such larger than life personalities.

I really enjoyed the romantic development and progress throughout the story. It felt very genuine to me, as if I can find it being played out in real life somewhere. This made me feel more emotionally attached to both the characters and the outcome. If I was looking for a nice playful yet romantic story I would definitely pick this one up again

Isser and Sol’s pack is in trouble. Jewel’s newborn cubs are ill and the pack needs money to treat them. Leaving the more experienced wolves to protect the women and children, the two bounty hunters agree to undertake a questionable assignment from known criminal Linus Lilymann. He wants them to find his stolen ruby and he insists he can’t possibly go to the police. Normally, Sol and Isser wouldn’t even consider it, but right now, it looks like the cubs only chance.

The mission turns out to be not what the expected at all. For one thing, Ruby’s a person, not a jewel. And for another, she’s a dangerous tiger shifter who escaped her kidnappers only to spend her life in a convent worshipping a cat goddess. She’s never been out in the world, she’s utterly unprepared to deal with men like Sol and Isser, and what’s worse, her first shift and her first sexual heat will happen on her twenty-fifth birthday. A tiger in heat will make a mate–or a meal–out of her first lover. Sol and Isser might be able to help her, but if they fail, their entire pack will suffer. It’s a difficult decision: protect the pack or protect their new treasure.

I really enjoyed the opening of this story. Ms. Monroe took the concept of the hierarchy and loyalty of a real wolf pack and applied it to this story about a group of wolf shifters.

It had all the makings of a space adventure as two of the pack set off to recover what they think is a precious gem, but what in fact, turns out to be another shape shifter.

The pacing is fast but I felt the story could have been stronger had we been able to know Ruby more than we did. I would have liked to have seen more insight into her personality and character other than what she was, and that she was on the run.

However, ultimately I enjoyed this story, and if you like a touch of sci-fi with shape shifters in your stories than this is probably a good pick for you.

It’s all fun and games until their hearts are on the line

Cassandra Moreland’s hard work to build her party-planning business is starting to pay off. There’s only one thorn in her side — a six-foot-five wall of testosterone throwing his weight around while she supervises her friend Lil’s first party. Butting heads doesn’t work. Ignoring him really doesn’t work. Not when he makes her pulse race and her palms sweat. But no way will she give in to his demand to shut the rowdy party down.

Lucas Wilhelm, head of McDermott Security, can’t believe the pint-sized brunette has the balls to go toe to toe with him. Strangely enough, that sassy mouth of hers isn’t ticking him off. It’s tightening his groin and stirring something much hotter than anger.
Therefore the tightness and contraction I see in nine out of ten clients is actually the energetic patterning of family ancestry, current family patterns, environmental influences but also even more importantly the possibility of endurance in a disaster. regencygrandenursing.com viagra pill on line We find viagra for sale mastercard Kamagra, Silagra, Zenegra, Forzest etc. A male sperm can live for three to viagra generika four months. A stolen moment in a pantry leads to a challenge that pushes each other’s sexual boundaries to the limit. Except the rules go up in flames when they realize they’re not just playing around. They’re playing for keeps.

7 Minutes in Heaven is Rhian Cahill’s first book in the Are You Game? Series, and is closely related to the Party Games series she wrote with Lexxie Couper. This is a world I enjoy visiting, and it was great to see old friends from that series, and meet new friends to add to the group.

Starting a new business is never easy, and when you are as determined to succeed as Cassandra Moreland, the business takes all of your time and focus. Building a client list and making her party planning business the best is Cassie’s only focus, at least until she literally runs into Lucas Wilhelm at her first big event.

As head of McDermott Security, it is Lucas’ job to make sure nothing goes wrong at Cassie’s event; he didn’t count on his instant attraction to the stubborn and determined beauty. And though Cassie feels the attraction too, she needs to maintain control and focus, and Lucas is the biggest distraction she can imagine. When Lucas challenges Cassie to two days of sharing time, each taking one day to be totally in control of everything, Cassie accepts, believing she can handle that and then walk away. Lucas is determined to show Cassie that she can have her control and Lucas too, on both their terms. Can Lucas convince Cassie that she has time to be a success and still have room for more? How far will Lucas go to show Cassie he is willing to accept and respect her choices, as long as she does the same for him? Will Cassie see that all work and no play makes Cassie a miserable soul?

I like the way Ms Cahill creates the playground of sensual pleasure in her stories, and the interaction between her characters, both old and new, is perfect for this world. There are little quirks in each of Ms. Cahill’s characters, making them more human and likable.

Cassandra ‘Cassie’ Moreland is a strong and determined woman. Issues in her past have convinced her that she can only be successful if she focuses one hundred percent of her attention to one thing at a time, and she is certain that getting her party planning business up and successful leaves her no time for relationships. When she meets Lucas and is instantly drawn to him, she fears he may be too big of a distraction, but when he issues his challenge, she is too tempted to turn it down and walk away from him. I like that Cassie is able to see that she may be able to have both in her life: business and pleasure can be compatible at times. And I enjoyed watching as she learned that, with the right person, success can be even more than she ever expected.

Lucas Wilhelm is temptation in a big and sexy package. When he discovers that he enjoys Cassie’s company, and is even turned on by her sassy attitude, he mounts a campaign to prove to her that she can have both her business and him without hurting either goal. I loved the lengths Lucas was willing to go to spend time with Cassie, and still manage to conduct his day-to-day business, showing her how it could work for her as well.

There are some really fun moments in this one, especially the scene involving six-year-old girls and beads. And of course, Ms. Cahill provides plenty of hot and steamy sex in new and unique places for these two. The secondary characters are well developed, and many are folks that have been in and out in the Party Games series, and it was fun to see them again in this contest of background figures. I liked that this story takes place concurrent to the Party Games books, and all the action spills over a bit, yet this is still a standalone story, no need to have read the others. I recommend this to warm up a cold night, and keep something cold on hand just in case.

Aurora Morrison scrimped and saved for a tour of Britain but, exhausted after the long plane trip to London, she falls asleep in Kensington Gardens and wakes to find herself somehow thrust back in time to 1902. The first person she meets is Jonathan Saunders, who takes her under his wing and introduces her to his family and friends as an American cousin. How can she help but fall in love with this handsome man of a bygone era? And how can she find her way home to her own time? Newly engaged Jonathan Saunders is fascinated by this mysteriously lost and confused American woman and vows to protect her. When Aurie decides to pursue her original plan–touring the British Isles–Jonathan follows her across England and Wales, his fiancee hot on his heels. He knows he can’t have it all, but he doesn’t want it all. He just wants Aurora.

Aurie has some very romantic ideas about Edwardian England. Will the reality live up to her dreams?

Despite having read countless books on Victorian and Edwardian England, Aurie never could have prepared for the reality of living in a time that was much more restrictive, particularly for women. With Jonathan’s help, Aurie struggles to conform to the standards of the time. Both quickly develop feelings for each other, but Jonathan is not a free man. Only his fiancée can set him free, and she doesn’t seem inclined to let him go.

Ms. McBride definitely kept my attention throughout the novel. I was constantly wondering how in the world Jonathan would get out of his engagement. Jonathan is a man of honor who always tries to do the right thing. He would never break his word, even though he can hardly stand Emily, his fiancée. The whole situation is heartbreaking.

I do think that Jonathan and Aurie become attached too quickly. They hardly know each other and yet suddenly they are intensely in love. I would have liked the pacing of their relationship to slow down a bit, especially at the beginning. However, Jonathan and Aurie do have the opportunity to get to know each other better on the tour. As I watched their relationship blossom, it became increasingly clear that they are perfectly suited for each other.

Emily is a thoroughly unlikable character. I felt sorry that Jonathan ever had to associate with such a cold woman. I must admit that I was very confused by Emily’s conduct toward the end of the book. At first she seemed intent on having Jonathan and making Aurie’s life miserable. However, she suddenly switched her focus to other pursuits. Emily is known for her cool exterior, but she really seemed to unravel toward the end of the story. Her actions were quite erratic at times. Despite this issue, she made a good villainess. Her nasty behavior made me cheer for Aurie and Jonathan even more.

I enjoyed reading Forever Beside You in Time. Jonathan and Aurie’s romance is touching, and I found the solution to their predicament to be quite interesting. Looking to travel back in time? Give Forever Beside You in Time a try.

Verity is a such a well-developed character that I knew exactly what kind of personality she has by the end of the first scene. Her snarky, intelligent commentary on all of the unexpected things that happen to her after her cornea transplant lends a healthy dose of skepticism to her experiences. The fact that she doesn’t immediately adjust to her surroundings makes a lot of sense given how violent, unpredictable, and sensual this new world is, although the inclusion of these scenes makes this a book that should not be passed down to younger readers.

I would have preferred to see more well developed secondary characters. So much of what I learn about their individual personalities comes from how focused they are on everything that happens to Verity. While I understand why they find her so fascinating, the idea of one person attracting so much attention didn’t always fit in with what I learned about their society. It would have been helpful had more time been spent on the difference between what the secondary characters say they value versus what they actually pay the most attention to as the discrepancy grows more distracting over time.

The world building in this book is incredible. Ms. Phoenix develops so many different species, alliances, and old, festering wounds between various groups simultaneously that I was nearly as disoriented as Verity is in the first few chapters. I was especially interested in how the author uses myths and legends from a wide variety of cultures to flesh out the narrative. They work quite well with the original creatures that she throws into Verity’s path as the plot progresses.

Haven Awakening is a wild ride that is as much fun for adults as it is for young adult readers. Why not give it a try today?

But even as they question her motives, Jeanie finds herself falling for not one, but both of them. To make their relationship work, the men will have to trust her, while Jeanie attempts to accept the impossible.

Jeanie moved out to a neighboring county to help mend her broken heart. With lush woodlands on either side of her cozy little house the fresh start was what she hoped could help get her life back on track again. With small excursions to explore the pretty countryside, she decides to visit Owlswick one Saturday afternoon. After taking a photo of a large, beautiful owl she meets a strange, angry man named Reed. Soon, Jeanie is involved with both Reed and his mysterious friend Nathan, and Jeanie realizes there is far more than meets the eye to the little town of Owlswick.

This is an interesting and very different take on shape-shifters. I’ve never read about were-owls or were-eagles and it was certainly something unique for me. I enjoyed how the author also had played around with some of the rules of the paranormal. Whereas it’s not uncommon for vampires to have no reflection, in this instance when Jeanie takes a photo of a magnificent, huge owl, when she looks at the photo instead she sees a man in the bird’s place. At times I had to wonder if the author was making a bit of light fun at the heroine – I laughed aloud when Jeanie first starts to discover the mysteries at Owlswick and says to herself “I’ve stumbled on something weird.” Because yes, if I’d taken a photo of an owl in broad daylight, then upon looking at the photo on my computer seen a man in the bird’s place weird is the least of what my thoughts would be! While I didn’t find the whole book to be lighthearted, it’s also not a deadly serious, dry kind of story either. I liked this blend of solid plot with a bit of humour thrown in.

If you are a reader who can suspend disbelief, sit back, relax and enjoy a really out there story, I think you should give this book a chance. Sticklers for logic and rules might find too many things to nit pick (owls flying around in the daylight hours, Jeanie’s inner thoughts leaping to massive conclusions, going back to “investigate” the small town she clearly thought moments ago might be quite dangerous). But really, when one is talking about were-owls and were-eagles, it’s not like the usual rules should apply, or at least not to my mind.

I’d recommend this book for more broad-minded readers who like something different. The author has written an interesting tale not only of two men finding their perfect woman to share, but also of a heroine whose eyes are opened to a completely new side of the world – a paranormal one. Best of all it I found it doesn’t take itself too seriously, and the sex was very hot. Different and interesting, I enjoyed this novella.

Eternal life — and eternal torture.

Forever young, forever strong, forever bound to their temple — a cult of vampire priests, sustained by the blood of their god.

The Great Chand, God of Lust, Ruler of Fertility and Death. Punished by his fellow gods for his insatiable appetite for sex, sentenced to eternity in the Netherworld, separated from all he once cherished. Each year the priests summon the Lust God, who takes over Kabir’s body. Chand’s promise, eternal life in exchange for a week of freedom. For a hundred years Chand has kept his promise. A taste of his blood each year keeps the priests alive and almost godlike themselves, but at a terrible price.

For a hundred years Kabir has withstood the ritual, hosting the god’s terrible lusts, suffered through ecstasy and horror such as no man should endure. There is but one way to break the curse. A mortal woman must fall in love with both Chand and Kabir. After more than a century, Kabir believes he has finally found such a woman. Tamanna fears neither man. But does she have the strength and compassion to love and accept two such opposite mates?

In this case, patients online cialis are advice to take other means of remedial measures like impotence injection and penile implants. http://deeprootsmag.org/2012/09/07/going-mobile/ online cialis Cycling is undeniably one of the best exercises to prevent physical debilities in old age. From its parts, ‘Dys’ means wrong or cryptic ( for instance, as in ‘dysfunctional’ ) and ‘lexia’, means applying to 100mg viagra words and letters. A viagra sales in canada person has to first see to it that what kind of disorder he is facing. Despite the title, it’s not all wham bam slam the ham. Sating the Lust God is actually a story with heart. The heroine had to work her tail off to find it behind the fortress it was hiding behind but she eventually does touch the god’s emotions and that journey is why this book works so well.

As with most erotic stories lately, the tale starts off with a heavy dose of lust. It’s a dream sequence and it’s truly pertinent to the momentum of the story. If Tamanna hadn’t had the hots for the Lust God, Chand, the whole story wouldn’t have worked. The heroine has a strong empathy for others and a caring heart. All it takes is one look from a year ago for her to plan her future. Of course, the surprise twists that are in store for her could never have been imagined by a simple woman living in a hut. In fact, the whole scenario she takes part in is all a lie. But to what end and why is only found out once she gets her wish, to be with Chand.

Kabir is a victim of circumstance. He’s also swallowed by the lie but for him there is no escape. I felt bad for him but by the same token, I was impressed with his inexhaustible persistence in not giving up. His perseverance provided another catalyst that changed the course of his life as well as Tamanna and Chand’s.

I didn’t list M/F/M initially because I wasn’t too sure if it qualified. You see, Chand and Kabir share the same body but when Chand’s in charge, he has four arms yet Kabir is still around, floating in his own brain while his consciousness is ruled by Chand. I didn’t list M/M either because it was only a couple of sentences with one of the ‘priests’ and the changeover of Kabir to Chand. To say this is a busy book is an understatement.

When Tamanna is finally is alone with Chand is when the magic of this story occurs. The author systematically showed the heroine chipping away at the lust god’s stubbornness and inability to share. He tries to stay invulnerable but her treating him different that all the ones before and Kabir constantly needling him about it, wore the god down. That whole process was touching, sometimes sweet, oftentimes annoying for the heroine but the one that that never failed was the sex. Those scenes were well written and plentiful but my favorite is when Chand became confused with the non-sexual touch. What’s a lust god going to do with a nonsexual touch? I found that amusing and kind of endearing.

Ultimately, the three beings have to come to a decision. And as this is a romance, I was treated to an unusual happy ever after that was perfect for the characters. I found it rather sweet, in an understated sexy kind of way but a little funny too. For the three of them who started out with no hope to end up actually finding their own slice of happiness made this a pleasurable read and worth spending an hour or two with.

Sating the Lust God is a fun, entertaining and sexy read that really made the time fly. I enjoyed the unique dynamics of a threesome but in a twosome. I liked the progression of the dialogue – from arrogance to loving, from impatience to caring. It sure is a different kind of romance; there’s a lot to like and it’s why I have no hesitation in recommending this book to readers of erotic fantasy romance.

Chemistry isn’t everything, though, and I would have preferred to see at least a few reasons why they could be compatible outside of the bedroom. A few scenes early on in the narrative could easily be rewritten in order to highlight other things that Lucy and Tad could offer one another. It would have only required the inclusion of one or two points of compatibility for this tale to have earned a higher rating.

I really enjoyed the references to classic fairy tales that are scattered throughout the plot. They made me feel like I’d wandered into the middle of a much longer piece. The author could easily write one or more sequels to address what has otherwise only been hinted at in these pages. While I don’t know if that’s something she is planning to do, Ms. Holmes has plenty of material to work with if she does decide to revisit Fairyville.

While none of them fundamentally chance the meanings of the sentences that contain them, figuring out what the author actually intended to say was distracting. A large number of run-on sentences also made it difficult for me to stay focused on what was otherwise an engaging plot.

With that being said, the setting is absolutely perfect for these characters. What might have seemed a little colourful for a non-fantasy setting feels right at home in Fairyville. If anything, Lucy and Tad seem to be two of the more sombre members of their community. Figuring out the cultural differences between their world and my own was one of the highlights of reading this story for this reader.

Love Potion #9.5 kept me smiling until the end. This is a good choice for anyone who loves the otherworldly feel of the fantasy genre.

Author Interview and Giveaway: Mary Behre

Long and Short Reviews welcomes Mary Behre, whose debut novel Spirited, the first book in the Tidewater Series, was released last week. May will be giving away an autographed copy of SpiritedSpirited, the main character Jules is a product of the foster care system. She lost her two younger sisters in it more than a decade earlier. She’s determined to find them and reunite their family.

Mary has just turned in the second book in the series, Guarded, about Jules’s second sister, Shelley who is a telepathic Dr. Dolittle. She’s also a vet who’s on a mission to solve the mystery of missing animals from a local zoo. When she’s implicated in the murder of zoo’s groundskeeper, she turns to an old friend, a cop named Dev from Tidewater. She’s also writing the proposal for book 3, currently untitled.

“What books or authors have most influenced your own writing?” I asked.

“The authors that most influenced my writing are pretty diverse. Dr. Seuss was the first author I adored. He made me love the written word and believe in happily ever after. (Horton Hatches the Egg still sits on my bookshelf.) Agatha Christie gave me a love of mysteries. Stephen King taught me that we’re only limited by our drive and imagination. And Suzanne Brockmann introduced me to modern romance novels.”

It’s not surprising that Suzanne Brockmann is on her list of favorite authors. Mary has several author she adores for different reasons.

“Suzanne Brockmann can spin a suspense that will cause you to lose sleep in your desperation to finish the book,” she explained. “Valerie Bowman writes the wittiest banter I’ve read in years. Her racy regencies are always on my must buy list. And Lynsay Sands writes the best vampire stories I’ve read. Her books have it all humor, sexy vampires, a good mystery, and great storytelling.”

I asked Mary which came first for her–plot or characters–and she told me neither one.

“I usually see a scene first. And it’s not always in the beginning of the book. With SPIRITED, I saw the bedroom window scene first, so I wondered what kind of woman would dress like that and why would she sneak into a stranger’s bedroom. The story grew from there.”

Mary treats her writing career like a regular job–working Monday through Friday, 9-5.

“I try to keep most weekends free to spend with my children and husband,” she said. “However, when I’m on deadline, I’ve been known to write for fourteen hours a day for weeks at a time. Then I sleep for a week after.”

For every book she’s written, Mary has something unique to the story herself. For Spirited, she has a toy purple platypus, and for the second book, Guarded, she has a toy ferret. When she’s writing, the toys go with her–especially on writing retreats.

She is usually surprised at who the villain of the story is–she thinks she knows, and she’s consistently wrong. However, by the time she reaches the end of the first draft, the real villain has surfaced and Mary knows that her revisions are going to be intense.

Many of Mary’s characters are police officers or former police officers, so she likes to attend the Writers Police Academy in North CArolina.

“It’s the busiest conference I’ve ever attended and worth every minute of lost sleep. There’s so much to learn and do, that attending once isn’t enough. I’ve already been twice and plan to go again<" she said. "For the paranormal aspects, I read everything from Hugh Lofting’s Dr. Doolittle to Edgar Cayce’s Auras and Colors.”

“What are the best and worst pieces of writing advice you ever received?” I asked.

“The best piece of writing advice came from my critique partner after my sister died of breast cancer in 2012 and I was struggling to find the will to write again. ‘Cancer took so much from you. Don’t let it take your writing too,'” she said. “The worst piece of writing advice came from a craft book. I should have realized when I got it for a $1 that it probably wasn’t reliable, but I young and new to the craft. Anyway, the book said to NEVER use dialogue.  Now, I’d already written my first manuscript and it was riddled with that pesky stuff. So I went through and re-wrote the entire thing, sans talking. Yikes! Bad, bad advice.”

“What are your favorite TV shows?” I wondered.

“Ooh, I like this question. Do the shows need to be current? Let’s see. Quantum Leap, Castle, Medium. Ghost Whisperer, Psych, Grimm, How I Met Your Mother, and Friends. Luckily, not all are the air anymore, otherwise, I’d never get any writing done. But for the ones that are still on, let’s just say, I love my DVR,” she said with a smile.

Finally, I asked, “What advice would you give a new writer just starting out?”

“‘Never give up. Never surrender.’ No seriously. I loved that line from Galaxy Quest. I live by that rule. There a few times in my life when I gave up on my dreams…for a few days but the urge to write is always there. If you want to write, do it. Study craft books, take workshops, join the right critique group. (If you join one and it isn’t working for you, find another.) And one more secret…read the bestsellers and see what sets them apart.”
