A Fresh Start

After the loss of his family in a tragic accident, Ryan Malloy has been given one last chance to change his life. His boss sends him to Flagman’s Folly, New Mexico, to run his ranch, but unfortunately, Ryan’s troubled attitude lands him in hot water with the locals, especially the ranch’s manager, Lianne Ward.

But, she’s yet to meet a man who treats her as an equal. Ryan seems different…that is, when they’re not butting heads over the ranch’s new school for disadvantaged boys.

Forced to work together, Lianne and Ryan discover an unexpected attraction beneath their quarreling. But will Ryan’s painful past drive them apart…permanently?

He’s a cowboy who has lost his family in an accident and hasn’t gotten over the grief yet. She’s deaf and broke up with her last serious boyfriend because he didn’t think she could handle running her own business. When Ryan almost runs over her niece in town, they don’t get off to a good start…

Ms. Daille takes two people with emotional baggage and puts them at the same ranch working on the same goals. Ryan is uncomfortable around children the age of his dead son. Lianne wants to work independently without supervision or “help”. She doesn’t understand why Ryan is so cold with the kids or why he insists on controlling her. They clash because neither one wants to talk about their secrets.

Men and women can both be full of a lot of pride. The author gives them both a healthy shot of pride and a reluctance to talk about it. When Lianne finds out Ryan didn’t even know she was deaf, she’s shocked. He’s angry at himself because he didn’t see it.

This story dances around the two characters and their problems, many of which are simply perceptions, not reality. Communication is the key and it takes a while for trust to build and for the two to let down their defenses and talk about past hurts and why they act like they do. They both learn some things about themselves in the process.

I enjoyed reading this sweet romance with a western touch. I could relate to Lianne because I hate being controlled or having someone following me around all the time. I can also understand how hard it is to open your heart when death has slammed the door in the past. Ms. Daille does a nice job of showing the heartbreak and emphasizing the difference the right relationship can make for you. Why not settle in a comfortable chair and give this romance a read yourself?

Asher MacGregor has returned from years wandering the Canadian wilderness to assume an earldom he’s avoided, and to seek a bride he does not want. He’s saddled with an additional family obligation in the form of Boston heiress Hannah Cooper, whom he is to escort about the London ballrooms so she might find an English husband.

Hannah is no more interested in settling in Britain than Asher is in returning to the New World, and yet their sympathy for one another soon turns to passion. With Hannah anxious to return to the family she’s trying to protect in Boston, and Asher bound to his earldom in the Highlands, they must trust in love to span an ocean of differences and difficulties.

“If grief had a landscape, it would be these highlands.” By the time I read this sentence in the novel, I felt as if I were roaming those brooding, enduring mountains with Asher and Hannah as they grieved for what they believed cannot be. The strong emotion Grace Burrowes has built into these two compelling characters by this time in the novel had me immersed in their heartbreaking situation.

The vicarious experience the reader has with Asher MacGregor, the Earl of Balfour and Hannah Cooper, a rich Bostonian young woman with a scheming step-father is full of all the rituals, taboos and social pitfalls found in the Victorian Age of England. The meddling and determination of older generation members of their respective families thread through the tapestry of the story in a muted color yet ever present and at work.

The strength of character of the hero and heroine added to the back story of what each of them has endured before they met makes a strong foundation for their persevering and being successful even though it seems for page after page of the novel it will be at the expense of their own happiness. Anxiety builds to a climax that showcases just how strong love can be in the face of adversity.

Grace Burrowes has a remarkable ability to bring the environment to life. The scents and sounds, even the feel and look of the soot from the foul smelling coal seem real. However, her special talent for developing strong, memorable characters is the very best part of her novels. Even the secondary characters have unique personalities that make a reader think they all have stories of their own that would be interesting to know.

MACGREGOR’S LADY is replete with family members, many of whom readers will recognize if they’ve read other Regency or Victorian novels by Grace Burrowes. Asher’s family members the reader may recognize from THE BRIDEGROOM WORE PLAID and ONCE UPON A TARTAN.

The powerful Duke and Duchess of Moreland, from the Windham series, in their not too subtle way salvage a touchy situation allowing the MacGregor clan and Hannah to return to their beloved highlands for the little time Hannah and Asher have together. Hannah feels she must sail back to Boston to face the wrath of her step-father in an effort to make live a little easier for the family she loves and that he abuses.

Neither Asher MacGregor nor Hannah Cooper has it in their nature to grab for their own happiness at the expense of their families. Duty to and love for their families which are an ocean apart wrecks havoc on both their hearts. How Grace Burrowes brings about a happy-ever-after keeps the reader in suspense to the very end but so worth waiting for. Especially good reading!

The Case of the Disappearing Corpse is a prequel to a series of hilarious mysteries starring Chiana Ryan, an almost-13-year-old wannabe crime writer.

When a babysitter discovers a dead body in her garden, Cha decides to use all her super-sleuth talents to hunt down the murderer–and just maybe win the online crime-writing contest with her story. It’s not as if there’s any lack of clues.

First, there’s the suspicious pink handkerchief with the letter K embroidered in the corner. Then a bent old man in a grey cardigan and baggy trousers tells Cha all about the two aliens who landed their space-mobile on the church roof. And what about the disappearing body that turns up two days later in the garden shed?

How do you solve a mystery when everyone else is trying to keep you away from the scene of the crime?

Chiana is at an age when she thinks she knows more than the adults in her life. Only time will tell if she is right. I’ve read one of her past adventures, and it was fun to catch up with a character that I’d met before. She’s lodged firmly between childhood and early adulthood. Ms. Whyte captures this sometimes turbulent stage in life with ease. The best scenes involve Chiana slowly learning to understand why adults say and do certain things as she slowly begins to grow up.

I hope to see Chiana mature as an individual in the future. There are glimmers of personal growth in her personality in this instalment of her adventures, but she has more or less remained the same girl I knew in her previous book. At times the repetitiveness of these old conflicts and story arches distracted me from an otherwise engaging plot.

There were also a few plot holes that were never really addressed. Chiana’s investigation includes conversations with people who seem very unlikely to share their findings with a civilian. While it was really interesting to see how she goes about gathering clues, certain scenes would have made more sense had this tale been set in a less privacy-conscious era.

It was difficult to determine the most appropriate age range for this story. The plot and dialogue are written for mid to late elementary students, but the inclusion of a few frightening and potentially disturbing scenes made me bump the age recommendation up to 10+ due to some violent content. None of the scenes are particularly graphic, but I do recommend parental discretion for sensitive and younger readers.

This book is part of a series, but it can be read easily as a standalone novel. It is a plot-based storyline, and as I mentioned earlier Chiana and her friends don’t seem to change a great deal from one adventure to the next. I have only read some of Chiana’s cases but I had no trouble filling in the pieces from the tales I haven’t started yet.

The Case of the Disappearing Corpse is a thrilling murder mystery for middle grade readers. Why not give it a try today?

It’s a page turner, and like any good story, got me thinking about what I’d do in the hero’s situation. The cover says Book 1 so I’m not sure if Mr. Carleton intends to continue with more near disaster books or even this character, but if that’s the case, I’d certainly like to read them.

The story begins to ramp up as Sean and Kira’s lives become intertwined and Kira’s nightmares begin to get worse and worse. The darkness that follows Sean begins to manifest and the nightmares plaguing Kira come to a head even as their romance begins to blossom.

Overall, the premise of the story was a good one. Using cremains to memorialize a deceased loved one sounds macabre but the way the author handled it left me feeling good about doing something with the ashes rather than leaving them in an urn. One of the things I had an issue with was the pacing of the story and the lack of edits to give the work a tight page turning feel. About twenty pages into the novel and I was struggling to get through it. Extraneous bits and information dumps abounded and they left me restless. While I liked the mystery of how the paintings were done I grew very frustrated by the repetition and slow plot movement.

Character wise, I enjoyed the romance between Sean and Kira and am glad to see the story will develop into another book. The paranormal element was unique in this novel and I think the author has a great deal to offer, with the assistance of an editor to tighten up the book a bit.

If you enjoy a unique paranormal read give this book a try.

In his investigation, he encounters the many facets making up this new phenomenon of senior citizen culture.
Written by an octogenarian resident of an adult retirement community, the novel addresses the reality of aging, both for baby boomers and others who may be living in or contemplating living in a retirement community.

Willy hangs out in the local bar, The Silent Frog, to see what he can hear.

This is an interesting tale about older people who get into influential positions and then use it to feather their own nests. The units in Sunset Gardens are not inexpensive. The sale of your home can get you in there, but it won’t keep you there. As I kept reading Mr. Foyt’s story I began to wonder if anyone who was involved in the board, the financial transactions or any other management position was going to be honest. It seemed everyone had a scam going.

As Willy and Sally, the newspaper intern, weasel information out of the residents and search through paperwork to see why Heinrich died, they discover a lot of other plots and plans.

Mr. Foyt writes a well flowing tale with interesting tidbits of information you wouldn’t expect to find in a novel. You’ll look at retirement homes differently after reading his tale.

I liked the ending–it’s ironic and amusing. I also found it unexpected. You’ll learn about the workings of a retirement community and how friends and enemies are made. I’d suggest you don’t follow the fraud tips though–those didn’t work out well.

Between the sheets, they’re poetry. Outside the bedroom, he inspires her to be more woman than she ever dreamed possible, which scares her enough to put on the brakes…and hit the road.

But if she thought he’d just let her leave quietly, she was wrong. Because hell hath no fury like a cowboy in love…especially one with a baby on his hip. And a ring with her name on it.

This was a story that hooked me fast and kept me interested until the last page. I enjoyed it immensely. Somethin’ Dirty is Em Petrova’s fourth entry in her Country Fever series. It is a very good book.

I fell in love with Griffin, this cowboy rancher raising his baby girl on his own. My heart just melted at his story. How could I not love him for his love and devotion, his vulnerabilities and insecurities. Petrova showed his emotions at every turn in the story. She also shows his determination as well. Griffin is a man confident that he can move mountains to get what he wants. His child. His woman ? Well, maybe not. He meets Nola and they have great chemistry and the sex is fantastic. Again, this is classic Em Petrova. The love scenes were hot enough to melt my kindle. But they’re both conflicted about a relationship. Despite his insecurities Griffin takes what he wants, seducing Nola and hoping love will be enough to keep her from moving on. Again, Petrova shows the emotions. The guilt, fear and despair. Now, while I fell in love with Griffin, I had some mixed feelings about Nola. She had this one track mind when it came to her search for stardom, and she went and did something that threw me for a loop. Not to mention how I was screaming at her in my mind not to break Griffin’s heart. I love reading a book that pulls me into the story like that.

This was a well written book. It was fast paced and flowed smoothly. The characters were wonderful. I was swept into the story, and felt real emotions for the imaginary characters. The author gave me a hero that I absolutely adored in Griffin. A take charge alpha man. He wasn’t too perfect either. Yes, that means he made a few mistakes too. It’s an unwritten rule that alpha men must screw up a time or two. If not, they’d end up being boring. So Griffin acted like a jerk a couple of times. Just like I wanted him to. While I had those mixed feelings about Nola, I admit she was a strong and focused heroine. So this book had exactly the kind of characters that I love to read about, with the right mix of drama and romance to make this a great read for me. It had the hot scorching love scenes that I enjoy as well. This May/ December romance had some light BDSM, with spanking and anal play. All of this I enjoyed and can’t wait to read more from Em Petrova.

I highly recommend this book for everyone.

There were times while reading her tale that I grew frustrated with certain mannerisms and not terribly constructive ways of thinking that Beth slips into every time there is a crisis, yet the complexity of her personality always pulled me back into discovering what happens to her next. Beth’s flaws make her genuinely feel like a real person. She is by far my favourite character in this book.

I had trouble understanding the growing attraction between Jeff and Beth. He is such a brusque, private person that I wondered what Beth saw in him. This became even more true once he began attempting to exert more control over her life than is appropriate for two people who barely know one another. They share few interests, and their personalities are nearly polar opposites. It would have been helpful had there been a few more scenes highlighting what they do have in common so that I could better understand why Jeff and Beth were initially interested in one another.

The best scenes occur when something paranormal happens. Ms. Scarbrough’s choice to portray them as whimsical and mysterious instead of frightening was a great choice for the overall tone of this piece. Figuring out what might cause a ghost to laugh was what first drew me into this particular story, and I was quite satisfied with how the author slowly provides answers to all of my questions.

At first I was a little surprised by the flashbacks that occur later on the plot, but they quickly became scenes to anticipate. The events that take place decades before any of the characters in this novel were born are just as interesting as what happens to Beth and Jeff. While more than enough details were included to keep this reader engaged in both timelines, I would have enjoyed spending even more time with the people who lived in Beth’s mansion over a century ago.

Timeless is a good choice for anyone who loves ghost stories. I would especially recommend it for people in the mood for paranormal fiction who aren’t interested in anything scary.

1. Tell us something about yourself that’s not in your bio.

I’m a registered nurse by day. I’ve been one since 1998. I think most people would be surprised to learn that about me since I don’t write about anything medically related.

2. What do you like to do when you are not writing?

I love to read. I think of myself as a reader first and writer second. The past year has been a little backward in that regard. But after finishing Dangerously Forever I have read four books so far. I have to start writing another book, but I think I may read one more before I do that.

3. How did you choose the genres you write in?

I love science fiction so the choice was obvious. I also love historical romances but I don’t think I’d ever be able to write in that genre, especially since the amount of research would be a bit overwhelming to me. I’ve been to graduate school, twice. I don’t want to do that kind of research again. LOL.

4. Is there any particular author or book that has influenced you or your writing?

I can’t say there is. I have a lot of authors that I love and they’re all different and wonderful in what they do.

5. What has been the toughest criticism given to you as an author? What has been the best compliment?

I’m still considered a newbie author so I don’t see any suggestions that are given to me as “tough criticism”. I take all the advice I can get and decide if it’s something that can help me improve my craft. If it is, I use it and if it doesn’t, it doesn’t. I think the best compliments are when reviewers/readers are portraying my characters as real people and not fictional characters. Whether it is a good or bad review, that’s always nice to see, someone as passionate about my characters as much as I am.

6. If you could have dinner with anyone, past or present, fictional or real, who would it be and why?

My grandfather. I know a lot of people would say Jesus or something like that. I’d love to have a talk with Jesus, and that time will come. But I miss and think about my grandfather a lot. If I was given a dinner with him, I’d make it a seven course meal and talk. I’d talk to him about my kids—about his kids too (LOL because they are a handful) and I’d tell him everything that’s been going on in my life. I have a supportive family and I would expect the same from him. He would’ve been proud of me and of what I’ve become.

7. You are going to be stranded on a deserted island and bring 3 luxury items. What would they be?

A tent would be high on my list, a nice one, to protect me against the elements. I want a machete. I think I’ll need to cut through the brush and kill me some vittles to eat. Oh, and a satellite phone. I can stay on the island for a night, but then I’ll need to call for help and have someone rescue me.

8. Pick two celebrities to be your parents. Who are they and why?

LOL. I’ve never thought of this before. Brad and Angelina pop into my head and I have no idea why.

9. What would we find in your refrigerator right now?

Left over pot roast, burnt beef chunks, apples, salad, juice, milk and cheese. I really need to go grocery shopping.

10. If someone wrote a biography about you, what do you think the title should be?

Not every princess lives in the lap of luxury. What I liked the most about Wren was how attuned she was to the thoughts and feelings of her subjects. Regardless of the circumstances of anyone’s birth or upbringing, we are all ultimately responsible for how we respond to what happens to us. I may not have agreed with every decision she makes, but Wren is a good example of someone who takes responsibility for her own actions.

I had some trouble understanding the character development of a certain individual in this story. Who this person was in the beginning is not necessarily who they appear to be later on in the plot. While it was interesting to be introduced to new facets of their personality, the transformation would have been easier to accept had certain behaviours and mannerisms shown up earlier on in their journey.

The simple yet cinematic descriptions of Wren’s society rapidly drew me back into the plot. Ms. Springer is extremely good at capturing a snapshot of a surprisingly complicated society with the inclusion of a few well-placed phrases. As much as I wanted to learn more about Wren’s world, everything I truly needed to know unfolded within the span of a few short paragraphs.

The Kingmaker sent a shiver down my spine. This is a great choice for anyone who enjoys fantasy that is heavily influenced by fairy tale tropes.
