A ghost in Colonial dress has been wreaking havoc at an old plantation house in Virginia. The house is owned by Elizabeth Smithwood, the best friend of Ellen’s Aunt Mary. Mary is determined to fly to the rescue, and Ellen McKenzie has no choice but to leave her real estate business and new husband to accompany her. Who else will keep the old girl out of trouble? When Ellen and Aunt Mary arrive, they find that Elizabeth’s “house” comprises three sprawling buildings containing all manner of secret entrances and passages, not to mention slave cabins. But who owns what and who owned whom? After Monty—the so-called ghost and stepson of Elizabeth’s dead husband—turns up dead in Elizabeth’s house, suspicion falls on her. Especially when the cause of death is a poisoned glass of syllabub taken from a batch of the sweet, creamy after-dinner drink sitting in Elizabeth’s refrigerator. Monty had enemies to spare. Why was he roaming the old house? What was he searching for? To find the truth, Ellen and her Aunt Mary will have to do much more than rummage through stacks of old crates; they will have to expose two hundred years of grudges and vendettas. The spirits they disturb are far deadlier than the one who brought them to Virginia.

Ellen McKenzie and her Aunt Mary rush off to Virginia to help out an old friend who is being attacked by a colonial gentleman’s ghost. On their first night in Virginia, after a long day travelling on several different flights and before they can even have dinner, the “ghost” is found murdered on the dining room carpet.

I was hooked from the opening of this wonderful cozy mystery. The characters are very real and I wanted to help them. Aunt Mary’s friend Elizabeth is still coping with the loss of her husband, who died from a stroke a few months earlier. The thought that Elizabeth would have poisoned anyone with her syllabub is ludicrous, but unfortunately the head of the homicide division in the small town is at best, incompetent, and at the worst, a murder suspect. Elizabeth’s sister-in-law is a crotchety lady with a very sharp tongue, but also a firm belief in Elizabeth’s innocence. There are many more delightful characters all working to help Elizabeth, and I enjoyed them all.

The story takes place on an old plantation in Virginia, and the past history becomes yet another character. Kathleen Delaney has done her research and her readers are the richer for it. Among other things, I learned all about syllabub, a desert drink, and also sippets, spoons made from stale bread. One of the characters teaches Colonial cooking and it was fascinating to learn about baking and how it was done in the eighteenth century. Everything is described with a richness of language that draws the reader back into the early history of the South.

And if that weren’t enough, the action is fast-paced, full of drama and mystery. The plot twists and turns in myriad ways. An old murder is uncovered, along with family feuds, contested wills, and the aftermath of slavery. Delaney keeps her readers guessing right up to the end, and I found that I couldn’t put this book down.

I am very pleased to have found a delightful detective and even more pleased to learn that this is the fifth in a series. It stands alone just fine, but I am now eager to read the first four as I really enjoy Ellen McKenzie. If you are looking for a cozy mystery which is filled with history and intrigue, look no further than Murder by Syllabub.

Wally was adopted from a Russian orphanage as a child and grew up in a wealthy New York City family. At fifteen, her obsessive need to rebel led her to life on the streets.

Unfortunately, as determined as she is to solve the mystery there’s someone equally determined that she never know the truth.

As far as Young Adult geared books goes, Dark Eyes has all the right elements: a gutsy if not snarky lead with motivation to follow an obscure trail, a crew of witty sidekicks who lend assistance at the right moments as well as comic relief, a sadistic long-lost parent who isn’t afraid to kill to keep his secrets and finally a clean ending but with enough possibilities that this reader is looking forward to reading the next book.

Mr. Richter has a background in screenwriting that lent believability to the setting, action and dialogue. I enjoyed the rollercoaster of events as I followed Wally on her journey to discover the whereabouts of her birth mother. The story is complex with lots of twists that were as exciting as they were unexpected. The setup was a little convenient in parts but there’s so much going on I could see why it was necessary to move the story along.

Readers who enjoy non-stop action and fast paced writing will be easily drawn into Wally’s plight and root for her success. The last couple of chapters were very exciting and not to be missed. Dark Eyes is gritty and thrilling. I think that both young readers and adults who follow the genre will enjoy the time spent on this exciting ride.

n order to survive high school, Cole, Cam, and Bobby came together as friends and lovers to form a coven to practice magic. Then after graduation, Cam and Bobby escaped the small, backward town where they grew up and went on to success, leaving Cole behind.

Ten years later, a series of tragedies brings Cam and Bobby back to Cole, and leads them to a powerful man named Darius Thorn, who wants to hone—and control—their magical skills. But after being apart so long, the trust and devotion they once felt isn’t as strong as it used to be, and they’ll need to reforge their bond and combine their energies to survive.

In the ten years since they’ve separated, so much has changed, and yet, some things stay the same. Love, friendship, and magic, are forever, or so it seems. Unfortunately, so is evil… and Cole, Cam and Bobby are about to find out just how true that is.

There is always one that is left behind, in this story, it was Cole. After graduation, his two closest friends left for bigger and better things, leaving him to the small town life they’d grown up in. This was probably the turning point in his young life, watching his friends move on without him. Although he had his own interests and pursuits, the dissolution of their inseparable trio shook him to his foundation. His love and dedication to them, however, is what brings him through to the end.

Bobby and Cam, having found their perfect lives – and then proceeding to lose them – still aren’t nearly as broken and dark as Cole. I’m not sure if this is because the magic was so much stronger in Cole or if it was because they had each other, while Cole was on his own, but it was something. Watching the three of them come together to stand against their greatest enemy, however, was both painful and thrilling. The power of love, of forgiveness, and enduring friendship is brighter than any darkness in any of the boys.

I loved the addition of the sex magic into this story. Often, it’s made to seem cheesy or raunchy, however here it was written exactly as it was meant – as a way to raise the power needed to enact the spells effectively. I also enjoyed that the author steered away from the light and fluffy and focused on the darker aspects of magic, making this novel more than a little terrifying at times. It’s a beautiful thing to see love blossom, or re-blossom in this case, in such a setting.

While deliciously dark and sexy, sometimes the writing in Coal to Diamonds didn’t quite hold up to what the author was promising. However, even during those moments, the intensity of Cole and his desire to regain what he had lost pulls the story through the rough spots. The author does an amazing job creating likable and flawed characters, including a truly evil and charismatic bad guy, Darius Thorn. The intertwining storylines, the sensual addition of sex magic, and the memorable characters create a world that will stick with you long after you’ve finished reading.

The Bourbon Boys Quartet, Book 1

Gaspard Toussaint is known throughout 1820 French society as the “molly comte”, a foppish throw pillow of an aristocrat. But his entire life is a twisted mass of secrets and lies as a spy for the Crown. His final covert act will have him fleeing his broken country forever…but before he can escape, he needs the power and safety that only money can provide. And no one has more money than English heiress Claudia Pascale.

The only child of a wealthy tradesman, Claudia has continually failed to catch a husband—due in large part to her uncontrollable stutter. Spurned by a dashing French lieutenant and desperate to escape her parents’ household, she joins forces with the seemingly harmless Gaspard to learn how to properly ensnare a spouse: through seduction.

All too soon, Gaspard’s lessons in delicious domination and sinful submission make Claudia suspicious that he is not what everyone believes him to be. And Gaspard realizes his quest to possess her is becoming less about her dowry…and more about the woman herself.

Warning: Contains an aggressive Frenchman with extremely loose morals, a determined heiress who can’t refuse a dare, and bedroom games where boundaries were made to be crossed.

The Corrupt Comte was an interesting book to say the least. It was chock full of secrets, lies and trickery. I’ve always been a fan of historical tales but am fairly new to the whole ‘spy’ sub genre. I think this book was the most detailed and intriguing when it came to this aspect that I have ever read.

I found another interesting detail in the fact that the heroine, Claudia, had a fairly severe stutter. What I also really enjoyed is that love didn’t fix her stutter and she didn’t get over by the end of the book. The unfortunate trait made her more endearing to the hero, Gaspar, in this book. I found that refreshing.

Back to Gaspard, poor poor Gaspard. I can’t really describe him as anything other than a tortured soul that is lost and seeking solace. It was again fascinating to see him find himself and his home with Claudia but what a terrible road he had to go down to do it. Having lived with what happened to him was more than most would have done.

Overall it was engaging enough to keep a reader interested, I felt, but there were times that were so desperately sad I found it difficult to read. Mostly when it came to how Claudia was treated by her parents and then Gaspard during his time in the military. I found it enjoyable the way the couple dealt with one another, a more push and pull, love hate type relationship.

I did want to mention that Gaspard’s flashback to his youth are a bit rough and is where most of the male/male aspect comes in. There are also mentions to torture and other non consensual BDSM, but not with the heroine.

He saved her life…

When Annalise Hadley is tossed over the side of her honeymoon barge, the newly-minted duchess knows she’s been left for dead — for her husband’s only interest is in her vast dowry, not her muddied lineage. However, she didn’t count on a savior. Especially not an honorable, sinfully intriguing earl who will tempt her to risk everything—again.

A man with his own demons, Owen Crawford, the reclusive Earl of McDowell, is enchanted by the mysterious, courageous woman he rescued. He will help her heal, teach her to protect herself, and then send her away—so that she’ll never see he’s far from the hero she believes him to be.

But days and nights alone prove that some secrets are meant to be discovered…some desires are too powerful to resist…and some wounds can only be healed by love.

From the moment Owen Crawford finds Annalise Hadley washed up on shore and reluctantly saves her, he’s determined to get her well and on her way so he can face his own demons alone. Seeing the way Owen keeps trying to find someone else to save her, endeared him to me all the more. He’s a hero who doesn’t think he deserves to be a hero.

Annalise isn’t ready to trust easily after her husband of only hours threw her overboard to rid himself of his wife so he could keep her dowry. There is something about Owen though that calls to her to trust him. He isn’t sure he’s the hero type and she sees him as an honorable, attractive and sweet man, even if he doesn’t talk much and keeps avoiding her.

There were many supporting characters that made this story work, without the healers to help Annalise and convincing Owen into staying to help, this wouldn’t have been the story it is. This is a story of two broken people finding each other fighting their demons together all while falling in love. I loved this story and will gladly read other stories by this author in the future.

Adam Pelletier is at the end of his rope. He can’t figure a way to help his wife recover from the tragic stillbirth of their son. He hasn’t forgotten their boy, but Adam has pushed his grief down deep and is coping the only way he knows how—by refusing to focus on his loss and burying himself in work.

Eden Pelletier is lost in grief. The pain for her is unbearable. So much so she’s in a deep hole of depression she can’t climb out of. Unable to do anything but think about her dead son, she can’t understand why Adam is able to put him aside and carry on. She’s so heartbroken she’s lost her job. When Adam pushes her to get up and move on, she lashes out—asking for a divorce she doesn’t want.

Can Adam win his wife back before it’s too late?

Promise Me Eden is a poignant love story—a story of a love that rises like a phoenix out of the ashes of a broken marriage.

A soul-deep grief sends Eden spirally down into depression that saps her strength and makes her want to sleep to escape. Not even Adam, the one man she’s loved since high school, can alleviate her misery. When her grief reaches the stage of anger, she lashes out at him because being angry at her stillborn child is unthinkable.

Adam Pelletier despairs of how to reach his once happy, vibrant wife—his much-loved Eden. His feelings of guilt, his stoic way of grieving weigh on him like an anvil as he works long, hard, cold days with cattle in the feedlot. The bitter cold in Colorado lingers longer than usual just like the bitter grief in his heart and soul lingers. His son is dead without ever having breathed a breath in this world.

Most all of the secondary characters quietly, steadfastly support Adam and Eden as they struggle to decide—do they give up on trying to reach each other or do they pick up the shattered bits of their marriage and try to put them back together? One notable character, Joelle, Eden’s mother, is a pragmatic, flawed character that rings so true to life. Then there is Angel, Eden’s much-younger half sister, who unknowingly helps Eden to face life and begin to put one foot in front of the other on her way to functioning like a living human being again. The equine veterinarian, Braden Van Der Carr plays a unique role in the unfolding of events. There are a couple of the secondary characters that did a super job of antagonizing; they rev up the tension to fever pitch.

Promise Me Eden is set in the Western culture with horses, cattle, and the weather conditions woven into the everyday lives of the characters. D’Ann Lindun does a remarkable job with the use of authentic vernacular, the atmosphere at the work place and in the dimly-lit honky-tonks, the attitudes of the people, and the family-like connections of a small community. Of course, being the nosy-parker I am, I wanted to know more about a few of the interesting characters and the happenings. I really did want to see the horse abuser get his comeuppance.

The scene at the grave of baby Ty touches a tender spot in the heart and lingers in the memory. My eyes got a little teary as I read it. This is an attention-keeping love story.

While Promise Me Eden is not a long story, it leaves the reader with a feeling of having shared highly emotional times with the hero and heroine.

Time is running out as the government continues its tirade of corruption and suppression against the people, and Nikos must find a way to teach others how to dream so that once more society can free itself from the shackles of mental slavery.

Nikos lives in Athens in the year 2091, and he is the only person in Greece who has inherited the ability to dream. Wars and decades of financial and social depression have left society crippled with no hope and no dreams for a better world. Nikos believes that “we are stuck in an era without purpose, a time capsule without significance and a period without cause.”

Nikos starts having dreams when he is twenty. At first he thinks he is going crazy, and he keeps his visions a secret so that he won’t be institutionalized. He goes on a college field trip to gather statistical data about other small communities outside Athens, and he sees utter desolation everywhere. He is given a book about dreams and begins to study the science behind them. Eventually, the things he dreams begin to happen.

Anthony Karakai has written a first person account of what it would be like to be the only person able to dream. This story revolves around Nikos’s search for answers about his dreams, about his life, about his role in the revolution to end the despair in Athens. I have rated this book at 14+ simply because the philosophical discussions and the allegorical language might be difficult for younger readers. This is a powerful book about what it means to have hope. It also shows dramatically the impact that one single person can have, if that person is willing to teach and share. Corruption and suppression can be brought down if people just have the ability to share their dreams for a better tomorrow.

I recommend this book to any who wonders what the world might be like in the future. Bombs and guns are no match for the dreams of the many, and those dreams start with one or two individuals. Each of us can make a difference.

This was a great book! Maybe a bit shorter than I would’ve preferred, but it was wonderfully written, with absolutely everything that I expect to find in a shifter story.

The story was fast paced and packed with heat. Five years ago, Cade’s fiancee claimed to be having an affair with his best friend. Now that his old friend is getting married, Cade is looking for some payback by stealing the bride before the wedding. His plot goes awry when his packmates grab the wrong woman. Instead of the bride, they kidnap Lili, the cousin and maid of honor. The plan backfires and bites him in the butt, when Cade realizes that Lili is his mate. The chemistry between them was hot and the love scenes fairly sizzled. Alpha Cade is busy scrambling cause he knows that when the truth inevitably comes out, Lili is bound to be hurt. There was also some suspense to the story as Cade’s enemies target Lili.

I enjoyed the humor in this one and found myself chuckling at some of Lili’s antics. How she reacted to the wolves was freaking hilarious. She was a firecracker and not about to be a pushover for anybody. Big old alpha Cade is stunned when she stands up to him, and I enjoyed watching her one-up everybody. Marc Archer needs a date for a last-minute charity event, and he needs it fast. Not that women aren’t throwing themselves at his world-famous face and body, but sometimes it’s less messy—as in less personal—to use his sister Shera’s escort service.

The last woman on earth Marc expects to see in his sister’s office is Chaili. There’s something different about her, but nothing pleases him more when Shera sets them up. That simple date quickly evolves into much more as they both discover the other fills a deep, secret need they’ve shared with no one else.

Though Chaili insists one night is all she wants, Marc isn’t walking away now. Not until he discovers what put the shadows in her eyes. And the scars on her soul.

Chaili is divorced and while it’s for the better, she finds dating difficult. She wants someone that understands her quirks and her flaws, and that can also see past the physical scars that are upon her body. Chaili may be considered a broken soul to some, on the fragile side, but mess with her and you’ll have hell to pay.

Marc is looking for his inner muse again. He needs something to replenish his soul. He never expected to find that in Chaili. He learns about her inner demons and the ugly truth that made up her past, but he can easily look past that to follow his heart with her.

The story is full of hot sex, soulful conversations and just a bit of heartbreak. I found that the characters weren’t fully developed. I didn’t connect as easily with Marc and Chaili as I have in Ms. Walker’s other stories. While erotic in nature, the sex scenes had plenty of emotion packed behind them. It wasn’t sex for the sake of having sex. I just hoped for a little more insight to the history of Chaili and Marc. There’s a bit of anal play and discussion of a past relationship that borders on the lines of BDSM, but there really isn’t any of that between the characters now. Beautiful Scars is filled with heat, heart and two souls that bond into one to find a love as powerful as ever. Chaili and Marc have their quirks and habits, but they find that they have the strength to love again. The happy ending felt a little abrupt, but other than that, I enjoyed the way things wrapped up.

When Liza Radley realizes it’s cheatin’ season and no self-respecting detective’s gonna spy on her husband for the $800 and change she has hidden in a plastic soap dish, she does what any normal transplanted Georgia Peach would do–she becomes a private eye. While downing her fourth maple-glazed curbside, Liza discovers “Eye Spy”, a shop for the self-motivated sleuth in the heart of Boston. Inspiration strikes and she enters the world of Jack Parella, the owner/operator who talks like Humphrey Bogart but with a Southie accent and is more than willing to train Liza in the ways of amateur sleuthing, while simultaneously infuriating and titillating her. Though Liza starts the journey intending to rebuild her crumbling suburban life, she finds herself thrust into a fiery mystery as head of “Crimes of the Heart Detective Agency” with Parella by her side. Thus our dynamic duo is primed for their next adventure.

This story was fun right from the start.   Liza Radley is really devastated when her friends tell her that her husband is cheating on her. She tries to hire a wacky detective agency, which costs more than the $800 she had been hiding from her husband, so that is out. After eating four donuts, she discovers a shop that has everything a person would want to become a private eye.

In this story there are lots of fun characters that I found quite endearing, including her three best friends, her mother and her father.

I never stopped smiling while I was reading this book, and sometimes I actually laughed out loud. This was one of the most delightful books I have read in a long time, and it is only book one. Another book is coming out soon, and I can hardly wait. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is looking for a fun story to read.
