Sir Griffin Barry leapt out of the bedchamber window at age seventeen after a very disappointing wedding night, drank a bit too much at the pub…and woke to find that he’d joined the crew of a pirate ship! Years later, he’s become one of the most feared pirates on the high seas, piloting the Flying Poppy, a ship he named after the wife whom he fondly (if vaguely) remembers.

What happens when a pirate decides to come home to his wife…if she is his wife, given that the marriage was never consummated? And what happens when that pirate strolls through his front door and is met by…

A swashbuckling pirate has been forced into retirement. He could set up house in town or relax on an estate overlooking the ocean or he could go visit the wife he barely knows. That last option isn’t Sir Griffin Barry’s first choice but with his salty right hand man in tow he decides it’s the most practical. What could be better than a ready made household to simply walk into (or limp into in Griffin’s case, thanks to a well aimed bullet) and become a man of leisure? Self-sufficient Phoebe has more than one surprise in store for her wayward spouse. What ensues is fast paced and gave this reader reason to smile on more than one occasion.

Author Eloisa James earned herself a loyal reader many years ago with her easy writing style, well developed characters, clever dialogue and epic stories. I gobbled up every book I could get my hands on after my first taste. She has a lovely way of introducing future hero and/or heroines within a series so that readers wait with baited breath on each new book. We briefly met Sir Griffin in The Ugly Duchess. His story intrigued me immediately and then when I read the blurb for Seduced by a Pirate I knew I was in for a treat.

Part of the draw to read Griffin and Phoebe’s story, for me, was I wasn’t sure if I would like these characters. I have always fallen in love with Ms. James’ characters but these two felt different. That may sound strange but at first blush Griffin seemed very self-centered if not down right egotistical. He saw no problem with simply walking back into Phoebe’s life after abandoning her in a very abrupt and rude manner on their wedding night fourteen years ago. I had hopes that she would sic the dogs on him at the very least. It doesn’t quite happen that way.

Don’t get me wrong, tempers flare, words are said and the tension is palpable. Once the backstory starts coming out–and let me tell you there were more holes than a Swiss cheese factory–we learn what happened to Griffin on the fateful night of their wedding along with how he ended up on the high seas, much less a pirate captain, his side of the fantastical events began to make sense. Misunderstandings abound in this novella but it’s not all just one sided. One of the funnier ones revolves around how he came to name his ship. Also, I was fascinated to know just when and where Phoebe managed to acquire three children who very plainly refer to her as their mother with no hesitation.

I can’t say much more without giving away the story but as I mentioned this is fast paced little number. The transition from angry words to passion filled nights is quickly accomplished and the story is brought to a satisfying conclusion. For myself, it was a little abrupt but I think I’m simply not used to short stories by Mrs. James. There isn’t a lot of time to become vested in Griffin and Phoebe’s relationship but it was enjoyable none the less. If a quick spicy read is what you’re looking for on a cold night, pick up a copy of Seduced by a Pirate. It’s funny and hot with plenty of heart for any Eloisa James fan.

She can handle twin babies, but can she handle the boss? As the new nanny for Chance Montgomery, Tory Bingham is looking after his adorable twins. But although she’s taking diaper-changing and sleepless nights in her stride, nothing can prepare Tory for being around the twins’ breathtakingly handsome daddy….

Five years ago, Tory’s dreams were stolen from her in a horrific accident, but as she becomes a part of Chance’s family she faces a heart-wrenching decision-dare she let go of the past and start to hope she can be happy again…?

This is a delightfully sweet romance with heart, goodness and a story of two people meeting at the best and worst times of their lives.

I guess Chance Montgomery might be a familiar character with readers who have been following the First Time Dads! series, but this is my first book. I can easily say that this is a standalone read. I never felt lost or thought there were background pieces missing. It’s as perfect a story as one could wish with an interesting beginning, an emotional exploration in the middle and a sweet and tender ending that is sure to please romance fans.

Chance is a father of twin babies who is completely out of his depth and floundering. It helps that his mom is wealthy, and the hero is well off in his own right but money cannot change dirty diapers, get little cherubs to sleep through the night or tell a parent when something is wrong with one of them. Only a person can do that. Money might get a nanny but it doesn’t guarantee that the person is going to be right for their family dynamic in all ways that matter. That is where family connections come in.

Enter Tory, a woman in need of rejoining the living. Her mom and Chance’s mom are friends and that provides the very believable set up that gets the hero and heroine together initially. It’s what comes after that has everything to do with the kind of people Chance and Tory are because their choices are the main conflict in this tale.

There is a lot of respect in this novel. I was impressed with the level of admiration the author had Chance feeling for Tory. I enjoyed watching his growing esteem of the heroine as she slowly reveals all her secrets, her trials and most of all, her steadfast loyalty and dedication to one person. It also caused no end of frustration for the hero because he was free to love, and Tory wasn’t.

Another item that I appreciated was the handling of the children. Sam and Cindy were adorable babies and the author did a wonderful job in conveying how important a role they played in this story. They were integral to the plot conflict as well. Even saying that, and although it’s the truth that they were written about in a clearly loving and dedicated fashion, they were too cute and bubbly. Twins can be especially challenging if they both have colic at the same time or have diapers filled with mega-poo, but Sam and Cindy were almost unbelievably angelic and accommodating. I would have preferred a few moments of a frazzled daddy and a not so perfect nanny to balance the sugar of it, but on the whole, it did make for stress free reading.

The romance is a restrained and careful dance between two people who have to balance a lot of emotional angst, past hurts and feelings of loss and emptiness. Their falling in love was a slow sensual exploration of the mind and heart with only a few passionate kisses to illustrate their physical attraction. Nanny for the Millionaire’s Twins is more about being seduced into love by words, looks and actions versus any passionate out of control clinches. It’s a perfect book for those that prefer more substance and character to love a story than sheet aerobics.

I’d recommend Nanny for the Millionaire’s Twins to anyone who enjoys a romance that focuses on two people and what they bring to a relationship. Chance and Tory could be anyone because their trials and tribulations come from caring too much and being real. It’s a good book to spend time with and feel good about especially with such a wonderful and complete wrap up in the epilogue. I enjoyed my reading experience.

When Miranda Coulsen accepts a summer assignment that takes her to Colorado and away from her daughter, she doesn’t expect to encounter the sexy Rik Hallowell. He’s even hotter now than a decade ago, when they had a brief, sizzling relationship that fell apart once she returned to Michigan and Rik went back to the family ranch.

Rik has returned just long enough to get the place back in shape and hire a manager. His father’s death and his brother’s decision to take off without giving the ranch a thought has trapped him there for at least the rest of the summer. When he encounters Miranda, he realizes the sparks are still hot and he’s quite willing to engage in another summer fling…or more.

But they’re no longer the kids they used to be. And the secrets they’ve harbored for ten years may be far stronger than the passion they both feel and the love neither is willing to confess.

One can never forget their first love….and when two souls are reunited after years apart, it can only mean one thing. But first, they have to get through the past and be completely honest with each other, instead of keeping secrets…

The one person Miranda doesn’t expect to see again is Rik, and darn it if all of her signals and emotions don’t go haywire when she’s around him. Miranda has built a good life for herself and for her daughter. She’s got a strong willed attitude and despite working for a man that would be willing to give her job to someone else, she’s doing quite well for herself.

Rik is a different man than he once was. He’s keeping his place alive, but he’s not really living. He doesn’t want to date anyone in town, he just keeps somewhat reclusive. Feelings re-emerge when he comes face to face with the woman he couldn’t get out of his head all those years ago.

I have torn feelings with this story. It lacks the three dimensional characters. It’s like I’m standing behind a wall not able to feel. I couldn’t get the conveyed emotions from the story. Now, I will tell you, there is surely some tension between Rik and Miranda, and the draw of that backstory kept me going. The other big problem for me is the back and forth between the two. It’s like they want to stay away from each other, but then they don’t. There’s some harsh words said, and bickering, and it just got to be too much.

Closer to the end, the story started to wrap up nicely, and I liked how Miranda and Rik worked together to sort out their feelings and problems. I’m glad that I finished the story, since I wanted to know how they would handle the very big secret being kept.

Is turkey day one of your favorite holidays? I bet you’ve never had one like any of these!

This is an anthology of stories about Thanksgiving by a variety of authors: Arthur C. Carey, John Weagly, Earl Staggs, Amanda Lundberg, Betsy Bitner, S. Furlong-Bolliger, Steve Shrott, Andrew MacRae, Zoe Burke, Arlen Blumhagen, Lesley A. Diehl, Gail Farrelly, Herschel Cozine, Linda S. Reilly, Stephen D. Rogers, Barb Goffman and Laura Hartman. The stories are short and each one has a weird quirk to it of some kind.

The authors give us poisonings, strange customs (ever been to a nude Thanksgiving before?) and there is even some argument over the traditional dinners dishes. Green bean casserole is mentioned more than once. There is also some argument over how the cranberries are presented. The fact that there are people dying all over the place doesn’t seem affect dinner. Some families don’t even take care of the body until after dinner.

The group of authors in this anthology made me laugh, made me roll my eyes, and kept me amused all the way through. They introduce odd characters with strange habits and it feels just like real family dinners do. Every family has that one odd family member that the rest of them try to ignore. It’s a nice homey environment with the spice of murder added to the Thanksgiving dinner. What more could you want?

A kingdom shrouded in darkness. One girl who can save it all. On her sixteenth birthday, Ellie Lyons discovers her entire life has been a lie. Kidnapped, she finds herself in a strange kingdom-Alladon-a kingdom she was born to rule, ruled already by those who would see her dead. The children have been imprisoned, caged and awaiting a fate Ellie can only imagine, and only she can save them. But to do so, she must master the skills of a warrior and learn to contain the magic that roars through her veins and burns everything she touches. But when Morfan, the king’s advisor, sends an assassin to kill her, Ellie finds herself falling for the dark, dangerous Devin. Though she knows her life is at stake, she can’t seem to stay away from him, even as her feelings become strong enough to scare her, and strong enough to disturb Vance, Devin’s second. Vance is the opposite of Devin-blonde, charming, seductive. But his heart holds a kernel of something darker, something that makes him dangerously unstable, especially once he realizes he has feelings for Ellie that Ellie doesn’t share…

Imagine being fifteen years old and having some creepy woman with sharp pointy teeth following you. She follows you home, right up to your door, she stands outside your school watching you in class – and your parents reaction to the whole thing is just weird. Like it’s expected or something. Then, you turn sixteen and suddenly this creepy woman shows up in your bedroom in the middle of the night and transports you to some other world and tries to tell you that, not only are you the long-lost Princess of this land, but you have to fight the evil ruler.

Welcome to Ellie Lyon’s life.

At first I wasn’t really a fan of Ellie. She seemed like a normal teenager, with all the angst, self-doubt, insecurities and doom-and-gloom attitude of a teenager present. She was likable, and she was also bullied, which engendered sympathy, but she was not very heroic. I found myself snorting and thinking ‘yeah, right’ to some of things that she was supposed to be able to do. It wasn’t until she was surrounded by her ragtag band of misfits that she truly began to become the person that she was always meant to be. Watching Ellie’s transformation from the insecure, quiet, bullied girl to the person they need to win back this land for the people was what really made me grow to like her. She is never cocky about the fact that she is a Princess. In fact, she’s not even sure if she believes it through most of the book, but she readily takes on the tasks put before her. She takes the time to learn about this new world, and learn from her companions. She is loyal to her new friends and inspires loyalty in all of them as well.

The world building in this book is well done. It was never overwhelming with descriptions as to be boring but it was still conveyed well enough that I could clearly picture it in my head. The villagers and gypsies that the group encounters, the guards and the evil ones intent on stopping her and the different species of people and animals you get to see keep your attention. The presence and use of magic in the book, and Ellie’s struggle to learn it quickly, is a lot of fun. There is also enough mystery left throughout the story that you are just never quite sure who you can trust and who you can’t.

One person that you know from the beginning that can’t be trusted is Morfan, the evil ruler that took the throne from Ellie’s parents. He is very well written. Creepy and clearly evil. Amusingly enough though, throughout the entire book I kept picturing him looking like Jafar from Disney’s Aladdin. There are a few chilling background details of him along with creepy encounters, so it offset my image of Jafar quite handily.

I was very surprised by the ending. I knew it had to be coming up because of the page numbers, but I thought it ended very abruptly. I actually had no idea it was the end until I tried to turn the page and realized there wasn’t any more pages. I felt like there could have been more of a lead-up to let you know it was coming. That should give you an idea of how engrossed in the book I was though. It did leave an open ending for the sequel, so you don’t get resolution of anything at the end, but I was very glad when I noticed it was book one in a series.

A fantastic debut novel from Ms. Newman! If you’re willing to be carried away to another land for a few hours, meet some fun and interesting new characters along with some talking, giant jaguars (among other things) and get caught up in a new battle of good versus evil, then you are in for a treat with Drive Back The Darkness. Enjoy!

Some things were never meant to be found.

When a family goes missing in the wilds of Washington State, veteran outdoorsman Ken Holbrook agrees one last time to lead a team of teenage search-and-rescue trainees—a joker, a brain, an Eagle Scout, a cute couple and a bully—deep into the forest to find them. But their compasses point them in wrong directions, their terrain doesn’t match their maps, and their radio—their only link to the outside world—spews only static. They will soon discover that the family they are looking for is not the only thing lost in those woods. Something truly terrible waits for them. Ken and his team of misfits will have to work together to battle a relentless, faceless evil if they hope to get out of the woods alive.

Getting lost in the woods can be terrifying but going into the wild to save lost hikers should be straightforward, right? What can possibly go wrong when one is carrying emergency supplies, travelling in a group and is in regular radio contact with the outside world?

Ken Holbrook has the physique of a young man and the chronic irritation of an old hero who is more than ready to allow a new generation to take over his life’s work. When I was first introduced to him I pictured someone who was at least sixty so it came as a shock to realize he hadn’t even celebrated his thirtieth birthday yet. A decade of rescuing people from life-threatening wilderness emergencies has aged Ken before his time. While this was never directly stated I got the impression that he’d grown weary of saving folks from circumstances they created by making dumb decisions and ignoring common-sense safety precautions while hiking or camping. Ken’s utter exasperation with humanity makes sense in this light. While I don’t advocate blaming the victim when the unexpected happens I do agree there is something to say for respecting Mother Nature and being over-prepared when travelling through a remote area.

The teenagers who accompany Ken on his rescue mission were disappointingly stereotypical. The intelligent student has poorly-controlled asthma, the bully is dim-witted and the sole female character crumples in the face of danger. While I understand the need to introduce new people to the plot quickly I would have enjoyed this story more if the author had surprised us. Show me an Eagle Scout who faints at the sight of blood, an honor roll student who is dyslexic, or a girl who goes on this kind of mission because she’s interested in the outdoors and helping others (and not because her boyfriend likes it) and I will be much more emotionally invested in what happens to them later on in the tale.

With that being said the pacing of Lost of and Found was excellent. It’s difficult to talk about the climax without accidentally giving out spoilers but what Ken and his team discover is truly creepy. The next time I go hiking certain scenes from this book will wiggle out of the recesses of my mind and refuse to be forgotten as I slowly walk deeper into the shadows.

Lost and Found is a good choice for anyone in the mood for a slow-burning horror novel that is as good at building suspense as it is in delivering what it promises.

Has the jacket come back to haunt him like a bad penny, or is something else going on with Milton that Chuck knows nothing about?

When Chuck stumbles on the real reason behind Milton’s reasons he’s surprised not only at what the reasons are, but by how much he can learn about himself in his own reaction.

I really enjoyed the blend of light-hearted fun and serious character growth in this story. Chuck is an easy going guy, in some ways the polar opposite to serious, tightly laced Milton. The author, however, manages really well to keep both characters from being one dimensional by showing how they can grow and learn from the lessons they’re dealt with. This isn’t a strictly traditional ending – though it’s very happy. The author managed to surprise me, but when I thought about it, I far preferred his resolution to what I expected. It’s not common to think too deeply about such sexy, fun short stories, but this one did make me reflect – and that’s quite high praise from what I expected would be a quick escape from reality.

A thoughtful, highly enjoyable read, I can easily recommend this story and author.

Ice Cream Man is a cute story that has a gorgeous twenty-seven year old man falling for a beautiful forty year old woman. Janice was instantly attracted to him as he was to her, and it was cute to see how Janice tried to overlook the age difference while Antonio didn’t see a problem with it. The characters were engaging but this reader felt that there wasn’t a lot of chemistry between them, there was sex but something was missing. The story moved a little slowly at times, but the interaction between the characters made up for that. The author made sure that the reader saw Janice’s internal struggle of knowing that she was older, while Antonio tried to convince her that it didn’t matter.

Ice Cream Man is a pleasant story and I enjoyed how the author brought the characters to life for you, which helped you as the reader to care that these two people get together.

Jeff Paxton came home from Afghanistan looking to put down roots. Instead his pregnant sister talks him into a job babysitting the volatile megastar Nigel Gasp. Nigel is stubborn, needy, and determined to be the center of attention everywhere he goes. Before long, Jeff realizes that something is bothering Gasp, and that keeping him out of trouble might be more difficult than he thought.

Nigel never planned on getting old. He simply assumed a hard drinking, hard partying lifestyle would take care of that. Now that he’s turning forty, he’s depressed and a little bit desperate. To Nigel, forty seems like a fine age to deposit his DNA and check out while he’s still on top.

The last thing Jeff needs is to fall in love with Nigel Gasp. The last thing Nigel expects is a whole new reason to live. But how can Jeff put down roots with a man who is never in the same place twice?

Love can be shocking. Gasp!

Nigel thought he’d completed his bucket list, but he forgot “fall in love” was the most important. At forty, Nigel Gasp figured his life was pretty much over. He’d done everything he could think of, and probably more he never should have attempted, he’d accomplished everything professionally he could ever dream about and he assumed it was time to go out in a blaze of glory. He didn’t count on a military vet and his family disrupting Nigel’s plans and his very life. Jeff and his overbearing but loving family would change the very person Nigel had always presented to the world. However, Nigel Gasp wasn’t succumbing without a fight.

Gasp! is a fun rock star themed story. It stars Nigel Gasp as an almost forty rocker who figures he has nothing left in the world to want, do, or need. He forgot he’d never really been in love. Enter Jeff, a recently out of the military veteran trying to find his place in the world again. The two are like oil and water to start but soon find out their attraction is mutual. They ease the world weariness in each other. They offer comfort and strength in the most unusual places. The two men may seem like total opposites but they compliment each other even as they butt heads. Since they both have strong personalities their love won’t be easy and that’s definitely tested within the bounds of the story.

The characters get more and more interesting as the story progresses. They make mistakes and struggle but it makes their eventual happy ending more satisfying. I like that Jeff and his family allows Nigel to really belong and experience a new kind of family and love. Nigel does a bit of cross-dressing but it’s a relatively minor point and it does add to the complexity of the character. I think the twist (though it’s not much of a twist) about the sister’s baby is interesting. I wasn’t sure why the couple would make that choice in regards to Nigel considering his actions and personality at the time. Likewise I wasn’t sure why Jeff would insist on some of the choices he does. His reasons make sense but he comes across as inflexible and unwilling to make any compromises.

These are minor issues though as the romance between Nigel and Jeff is littered with small laughs and quiet moments. It’s more intimate than you’d expect given Nigel’s profession. The writing does a great job of showing how two very different men fit together so seamlessly. The story does stumble in a few places but I found there to be more things I liked about it than disliked. It’s a story that makes you want to keep turning the pages to figure out how they’ll be happy. For fans of the author, I think most will quite enjoy this one. For anyone new, it’s a great entry into the writing style and tone of this author.

Abigail Powers is a barista in a small coffee shop. Her aspiration is to be a nurse, but until she is accepted in school, she’s working hard to pay off old debts. Her guilty pleasure? Lusting after the handsome, but sad man who frequents the shop each day. Though they’ve never spoken, she can’t help but be attracted to him.

Jay Longmire’s world has been devastated. Losing his family 18 months earlier has left him overcome with grief, so he spends day after day trying to maintain, but cannot shake his sadness. When he meets Abby, he’s not only forced to confront his grief, but the possibility of finding happiness with another woman.

This book is the first I’ve read in The Challenge Series, which deals with characters overcoming an obstacle of some sort. Each of the characters in this story dealt with their share of hurdles, but Jay’s were monumental. While I enjoyed the friendship and interaction between Jay and Abby, I had a great deal of trouble getting past Jay’s grief. The man was described as still having violent nightmares, and vomiting often from the memory of the night his family was attacked. He had such a profound sadness-which was very understandable and the author did an excellent job setting up-but when the characters began their relationship, it felt very uncomfortable. Some of the discomfort may have been with the fact that his daughter was still being kept alive on life support, so the past wasn’t fully resolved. I just couldn’t help but think Jay wasn’t ready for another relationship at that point…not until he was able to put the past behind him.

Aside from the horrific events of Jay’s past, these two were a nice couple. I liked the way they dated, yet weren’t dating. They avoided titles and labels, and just enjoyed spending time together. Abby was a sympathetic character and I liked her determination to help Jay in whatever way she could while fighting the attraction she had for him. One can’t help but like Jay after all he’d been through-an event no human being should ever be forced to suffer. The fact that he managed to get out of bed each day was a testament to his courage.

I do wish this story was just a little longer so perhaps more time could have passed to allow Jay to heal. Aside from that, it was a nice story of redemption and survival. I would recommend this book to those who believe in the second chance at love, keeping in mind it is not for the faint of heart. I will give another book in the challenge series a try because I like the idea of strong characters, and ones who fight through tragedy are nothing if not strong!
