Love and death are always part of life, but now is the time to seek out justice.

Catherine Hart is running. She’s just witnessed her sister’s murder. She can’t run fast enough. Caught and thrust into Cyril Wood’s world of prostitution and chaos, she must seduce Lance Clay and get the deal her sister was striking, or die.

Nothing is as it seems. Her sister was hiding far deeper than she could imagine. Lance wants Clay’s head and is prepared to do anything to get what he wants.

Catherine is a gift to Lance and together they must fight for her freedom and bring Cyril down. But in this world nothing is as it seems. Is her sister really dead, and who is really controlling Cyril?

Drama, Romance, Suspense. This one has it all.

Catherine Hart is in the middle of a nightmare. Captured by the men she witnessed killing her sister, Sidney, she’s forced to make an agreement with the notorious crime boss, Cyril Woods. She’ll be released if she agrees to take her sister’s place as Cyril’s whore in a meeting with Lance Clay. After being drugged, Catherine is left in a seedy motel to await her date.

Lance, however, was not what she expected. His goal is not to work with Cyril, but to take him down. He’d been working with Catherine’s sister to accomplish this, and just when they got close, Sidney was killed.

There was much in this book I liked. The intrigue and mystery were compelling, and I was anxious to find out how things would come together. Catherine was a character who was easy to root for, thrown in an environment not of her choosing, but fighting to get her way out. Lance was sympathetic and caring, and it made sense for the two of them to come together under the circumstances.

Though the “bones” of the story were there, it felt much was missing from this book. Many of the holes weren’t filled in and I missed much of the drama. A good example is early on. After being shot at, the heroes get into a car and speed away. Out of nowhere, a car bangs into them and chases them. It was an exciting set up and I was looking forward to how they’d escape or what they’d do. A few sentences later, however, they’d somehow gotten away and found themselves at a safe house. By skipping all the details and the action, I didn’t feel pulled into the story. I’m not sure if it was the short nature of the book that led to the brevity of the writing or if the other way around, but this was a tale that was told, not shown. It kept me from having an emotional attachment to any of the characters.

While I liked the character of Ben, an old acquaintance of Lance, a good portion of this short story was devoted to him and his potential love. It was another good basis for a story, and I wouldn’t mind reading it, but mixing it in here took away from the main characters of Lance and Catherine. I would have preferred focusing on one couple, considering the limited pages.

This is book one in a future series, which I’ve always been a fan of. I enjoy following familiar characters through several tales and becoming closer to those involved. My preference, however is to have each tale wrapped up by the end of the book, with perhaps a teaser for the next in the series. This story, however, leaves the reader with unanswered questions – many posted in the last pages. It’s an interesting way to bring readers to the next title, but it can also leave the current story feeling unfinished.

As a whole, Love, Death and Justice was entertaining. The intrigue and suspense is great, and with a few additional details and tweaks, this book would be a real page turner. I liked it enough to look at the next title, and hope to find more of a personal connection with the characters as time goes on.

Heather and Mick have fallen into a rut. Married and in love, their day-to-day life has become almost robotic. Heather finally confesses to Mick she craves submitting to him, handing her body and soul to him in sensual surrender. At first Mick doesn’t know how to react, but after some planning and careful discussions, he decides to rock her world and give her a Valentine’s day she’ll never forget.

This was a hot, sexy read. Heather and Mick were clearly in love, a long term couple adding some much needed spice to help fulfill undiscovered parts of an already trusting relationship. This short story is chock-full of all sorts of toys, Domination and mutual exploration. It’s not over the top, but neither is it for the faint of heart. I found it a good blend of kinky but loving, explorative, but not demeaning. Very well written I think this is a good introduction to those wanting to read about Dominance and Submission but not wanting to start in the deep end, or with a “harder” style of story. A good tale of a happy couple pushing their boundaries both personally and together.

A desperate mother falls in love with the spymaster she’s forced to betray.

Spymaster Sebastian Danvers, Lord Somerton, has spent the last decade protecting England’s shores against a French invasion. Known for his cold logic and ability to sacrifice anything for the greater good, few can outwit him and even fewer dare challenge him. Until now.

After being exiled to his country estate, Sebastian is surprised when his beautiful, no-nonsense neighbor turns her seductive wiles on him. But years of intrigue have left him wondering why a respectable widow would risk scandal for a few nights in his bed. Sebastian takes his time unraveling the widow’s secrets, for he quickly realizes she might be the one sacrifice he is unwilling to make.

Living a quiet existence at Winter’s Hollow, Catherine Ashcroft spends her days doing little more than caring for her precocious six-year-old daughter and negotiating her neighbors’ various complaints against their absentee landowner, the enigmatic Earl of Somerton. But, all her boredom comes to a searing halt after learning her newly returned neighbor might have had something to do with her husband’s murder.

Catherine’s orderly existence soon upends and she now finds herself in a desperate bid to save her daughter’s life. But she must betray the earl to do so, even though she no longer suspects him of foul play. Catherine succumbs to the earl’s passionate kisses and recognizes the same loneliness she has felt for years lurking in his hard, crystalline eyes. As the earl’s enemies close in, will Catherine be able to save both her beloved daughter and the handsome spy who has stolen her heart?

Spymaster Sebastian Danvers’ life is not his own. Catherine Ashcroft’s life is too much her own.

His endurance, intellect, and long-held beliefs have been tested to the limit. On leave as per his superior’s request, Sebastian returns to Bellamere Park to find the steward he hired sight unseen has been unresponsive to the tenants needs. Trying to rectify the situation and trying to come to terms with an order from the office of his superior has Sebastian on edge—he is not sure he can make himself obey the order. All these things plus the guilt he feels about the death of Jeffrey Ashcroft gives him lots of sleepless nights—not to mention the overwhelming attraction he feels toward Ashcroft’s widow.

Catherine Ashcroft holds strong to her mother’s advise to “draw strength from your fear then vanquish it”. Making a good life for her daughter Sophie is Catherine’s number one priority. She has been without a husband except for short, few-and-far-between visits for four years, so his being dead does not change her life very much. She is respected and trusted by the people of the community. She is an advocate for the tenants of Bellamere Park since the steward there seems less and less concerned with seeing to the tenants needs.

The intelligent, lively seven-year-old Sophie is like a ray of sunshine sparkling on the morning dew. She brightens everyone’s life. It is horrifying to think the evil antagonists would harm her to get what they want.

As both Sebastian and Catherine try to cope with their lives that are in chaos, their attraction to each other grows. Their relationship that brings sensational satisfaction but also incredible guilt for each of them makes intense, page-turning reading. The love scenes are breathtakingly beautiful and the inner turmoil of these two complex characters plus the ever-lurking danger keep the reader’s senses and emotions on full alert.

The side stories like those of Sebastian’s wards and Meghan McCarthy add depth to Checkmate, My Lord. They help augment the development of the characters so the reader gets to see what makes them tick.

Tracey Devlyn’s writing style is compelling and powerful. She taps into the emotions and senses of the reader as she reveals the dark side of human nature as well as the giving, honest, and loving side that overrides the darkness.

Checkmate, My Lord is an intense love story that offers redemption to the hero and heroine and gives them a happy-ever-after that the reader can rejoice in.

WHAT IS GOOD WRITING? by Nancy Springer

Words.

Specifically, nouns and verbs.

More specifically, concrete nouns and action verbs.

Creative writing is all about images. The root word of “imagination” is “image.” Imagination is the ability to make mental pictures. We help children toward this ability by starting them off with picture books.

Writing, I embark on a process so peculiar it is almost paranormal; if we were not so accustomed to it, we would call it mental telepathy. The process is, I project a kind of picture show in my mind, but instead of drawing pictures about it, I make clusters of little marks, more commonly known as letters forming words. If I do my job well, then someone unknown to me will be able to look at the little marks, decode them via the process we call reading, and — get this –the same or very similar picture show will take place in her or his mind.

For this they pay me. A bizarre way to make a living, yes?

But there it is, and it’s best achieved through those concrete nouns — picture nouns — and active verbs. Abstract nouns and linking verbs won’t do it. “A person loves something,” conveys no picture. “The new mother swaddled her baby with her arms,” works better, although far from being great lit. The right verbs and nouns are more important than all the adverbs and adjectives any writer could lavish on the wrong verbs and nouns. Luckily, the English language has adopted a huge number of synonyms. In Spanish, for instance, the only word for donkey is burro/burra (masculine/feminine). In English we have donkey, jenny, burro, onager, jackass, jennet, hee-haw, Jerusalem pony, jack, ass, Missouri nightingale, and Rocky Mountain canary.

Whoa.

Backtracking to the premise: words convey images. But the flip side is, our vocabulary dictates and limits what we imagine. This is why the largest change in the English language since the fifteenth century took place due to feminism. No matter what Samuel Johnson said, “his” does not convey the same image as “his and hers,” let alone “hers and his.” Say “mankind,” and the image is masculine. But say “humankind or “humanity” or “people” to include women and children in the picture. “Waitress” gives a feminine image; “server” is gender neutral. It’s a wonderful thing how our language adapts and adopts to keep up with our cultural needs. Not that “smart phones” are really smart, but keeping up with linguistic change is never stupid — especially not for a writer.

The most constantly important element of good writing is diction. Which means having a large vocabulary from which to choose.

In the beginning was the word.

Nancy Springer has passed the fifty-book milestone, having written that many novels for adults, young adults and children, in genres including mythic fantasy, contemporary fiction, magical realism, horror, and mystery — although she did not realize she wrote mystery until she won the Edgar Allan Poe Award from the Mystery Writers of America two years in succession. DARK LIE is her first venture into mass-market psychological suspense.

Born in Livingston, New Jersey, Nancy Springer moved with her family to Gettysburg, of Civil War fame, when she was thirteen. She spent the next forty-six years in Pennsylvania, raising two children (Jonathan, now 35, and Nora, 31), writing, horseback riding, fishing, and birdwatching. In 2007 she surprised her friends and herself by moving with her second husband to an isolated area of the Florida panhandle, where the birdwatching is spectacular and where, when fishing, she occasionally catches an alligator.

In this gripping psychological thriller — smart, chilling, and unrelenting — Nancy Springer establishes herself as an exciting new suspense writer with a distinctive voice and some surprises up her sleeve…

To their neighbors, Dorrie and Sam Clark seem a contented couple in America’s heartland, with steady jobs, a suburban home, and community activities to keep them busy. But they’re not quite what they appear to be. For plain, hard-working Sam hides a depth of devotion for his wife that no one would suspect. And Dorrie is living a dark lie — beset by physical ailments, alone within herself, and unknown to those around her, following the comings and goings of the sixteen-year-old daughter, Juliet, she gave up for adoption when she was hardly more than a child herself.

Then one day at the mall, Dorrie, horror-stricken, sees Juliet being abducted, forced into a van that drives away. Instinctively, Dorrie sends her own car speeding after them — an act of reckless courage that pits her against a clever, depraved killer, and draws Sam into a dogged, desperate search to save his wife. In a confrontation that unites mother and daughter in a terrifying struggle to survive, Dorrie must face and conquer her own secret, tormented past.

Different Masks – BA Tortuga

Lyons is a loup-garou and angry and hell, tracking down his best friend and ex-lover, Kipp. But Kipp is more than he seems, and has secrets he dares not share, so he ran out on the pack before their Alpha could have him killed. Scorching hot writing and highly erotic, this hunter/prey tracking style short story was full of animal passion and sizzling sex.

Believe me, Beloved – Charlie Cochet

Robert Bradley is gobsmacked by the brilliance of Gabriel Chase’s luxurious masquerade. Feeling completely like a fish out of water – like a male Cinderella – Robert plans to enjoy this one night looking in on the lap of luxury. Gabriel has noticed him though, and soon they’re both ready to be honest and remove their masks. This is an old-style sexy story, set in the glitz and glamour of top hats and tails.

As You Wish – Rob Rosen

James is desperate for a job, and Charles needs a houseman he can trust. But there’s far more beneath the surface of a mere valet that Charles needs. A surprising paranormal/historical novel filled with mystery and steamy sex. This reminded me a little of the naughty Victorian tales and raunchy historicals.

Alpha Prime – Katherine Halle

Christian has no desire to attend Stephen Cane’s annual masquerade, but he has no choice. When he finds his online friend is going too, there seems to be a small silver lining to the whole deal. But the real action happens once their instincts kick in, they recognise each other’s costumes and the masks finally come off. A cool modern, werewolf tale full of hot sex and steamy mystery.

What You Are – Elizabeth L Brooks

Cory routinely bumps into Leon at the elevators of their building. Desperately in lust neither have acted until they unknowingly dance together at a masquerade. Sizzling tension explodes between them, but Cory is too scared to divulge his secrets and remove the mask. Leon is determined however, and soon it’s Cory seeking him out. A wonderful tale of hidden secrets, lust and a surprising tenderness. Reader warning – there’s wolf sex in this story.

Annual Full Moon Werewolf Ball – Sean Michael

Grammercy disliked the fakeness of the “werewolf” annual ball where humans pretended to be something extraordinary. Unsure why he’s bothering, Gramm decides to hang around when he scents the man who bit his thigh years ago – changing him forever. A steamy story of two very determined, strong minded men coming together in a clash of passion, sex and deep instinctual hunger.

But the sexy damsel in distress stirs passions long buried. He has to have her—in his life and in his bed. She’s everything he’s ever wanted in his long existence. To help battle the evil that lurked in the mortal realm, Anubis created his warriors. Each one was taken from a battlefield, near death, crying out for another chance at life. Only the pure of heart did the Egyptian god of the underworld choose. Men who would serve him, and would help bring the mortals who would harm others of their world before Anubis for judgement. With their last dying breath, the warriors would pledge themselves to Anubis, bound for all eternity. In return, the god of the underworld granted them immortality and the means to defeat the ones who preyed upon others. Marked as one of Anubis’ own, the warriors were sent out into the world, never to meet another of their kind, always alone.

I loved the premise for this series. I’ve always been fascinated with the lore that surrounds the Egyptian culture, the gods they worshiped and so forth. So naturally, once I read the blurb I grabbed this one up right away. I’m so glad that I did because this was a wonderful love story.

Konner is one of Anubis’ warriors sent to fight evil. He faces evil every night in his duty to Anubis. Now the mighty warrior is felled by a fair damsel in distress. After a blind date from hell Alexis is stranded. She borrows a cell phone from a stranger and is mesmerized by his handsome face and his sinfully sexy voice. Their chemistry is undeniable. There is a good reason for the attraction they both feel. Alexis is Konner’s mate. Konner had been feeling that his life was empty. After his long solitary life, Konner is ecstatic to find his mate. He searches for a way to explain the truth about himself without freaking her out. His love life isn’t his biggest worry, though. It seems that a spellcasting demon has targeted him. Now he has to worry about the safety of his new mate.

A Warrior To Love is a steamy love story. It’s well written with unique characters that will captivate the readers. It is a little bit short for my own reading preferences but just right for those times when you need to escape for a couple of hours. I loved it. I’d recommend A Warrior To Love as well as the other books in this exciting series.

Beauty, brains and voluptuous curves…Tera’s exactly the kind of woman Nick’s been looking for, but can he convince her that the smokin’ hot chemistry between them is more than skin deep?

Terrah Bryant embraces her curves despite being immersed in the modelling world. Her job as a makeup artist requires confidence, creativity and the ability to stay focused in the presence of some of the world’s finest men. She has never had a problem until she works with Nick Tasso, a gorgeous Greek model who has a thing for voluptuous women.

She struggles to deal with the media’s scrutiny over her body and their burgeoning relationship. Terrah must decide to trust her heart and face her own insecurities before she can have the ‘happily ever after’ she truly desires.

Today’s media is selling us a message that if woman is not size zero or below then her life is miserable, unhappy, she is lonely and nobody will ever love her. Such a message is creating very dangerous anxiety among women. Fortunately there are books promoting curves and providing women with completely different and far more positive body image message. Ample Delights is one of those books.

The main character of the story is Terrah, a make-up artist in the fashion industry and she is size 14. But, regardless of her clothing size and the daily contact with the ultra-thin models, Terrah is a girl who loves her body and she is not putting her relationship in doubt because of her size. On the contrary, Terrah is one of the greatest size 14 heroines that I’ve had the chance to meet. She is down to earth, and when her old fears came crawling back she dealt with them in the rational and adult manner. No whining, no self-loathing, just telling the message: “love your body, love your curves”.

Besides the great heroine, this story is packed with hot sex.  While the sex scenes give additional spiciness and flavor to the story, even without them the story would be great. In other words the story does not focus on the sex but on the development of the relationship between Terrah and Nick. Additionally, I would like to point out that although this is multicultural novel, the issue of multicultural relationship is not raised at all, which was really fine by me. Trying to cover too many issues in one place can unnecessarily dilute the story. Author Nichelle Gregory has done a great job focusing on body image issue while developing relationship and creating two great characters.

Ample Delights has all my favorite genre components; it is contemporary, Rubenesque and Multicultural, three in one — oh what a joy! — but what is most important it is also a great story that provides the reader with the message that you do not have to be size zero to be happy, loved, have great guy and very hot and satisfying sex. And because of all this I highly recommend this story.

Determined to take the higher road, Mae does her best to save him. She’s playing with fire and knows it—she just didn’t expect it to feel so good.

Lucas has no memory of the attack that grounded him in a witch’s house but his instinct is to roast first, ask questions later. But the more time he spends with Mae, the more passion flames between them. He lingers, exploring their simmering (and forbidden) attraction.

Desire gives way to pleasures of the flesh, the couple enjoying their wary truce and the sexual explosion it provides. Until reality comes knocking. Caught between the lover she cares for and the king who wants to enslave him, Mae faces the biggest fight of her life. And her dragon’s heart is the prize.

Sex can be very tempting when a dragon-shifter drops through your ceiling, particularly one that looks like Lucas. But sex with your enemy can get you killed—one way or another.

Mae takes a big chance in helping the wounded man bleeding all over her floor. Despite the fact that they are natural enemies, she just can’t bring herself to scramble his brains and rid herself of the danger he poses. One spell is all it would take. She knew the words, even felt the fiery magic come to life in her palms as she prepares to strike. And yet, as she examines the broken, unconscious form, she feels the unwanted stirrings of desire. Despite the warning bells clamoring in her head, her sense of duty takes over and she makes a decision that will change the rest of her life.

A quiet and docile woman who spends her time learning healing magic, she’s just the witch to patch up Lucas’ wounds. When he regained consciousness, would he welcome her assistance? Or would he kill her at the first opportunity he got? At war with her sense of healing responsibility and her wish to stay alive, she puts aside her hesitance and does what she knows is right, despite what it may cost her in the end.

Mae is a stronger woman than she gives herself credit for. She certainly doesn’t owe Lucas anything. He is her natural enemy, after all. But Mae possesses a kindness and desire to help those in need, even if it endangers herself. These characteristics make her a heroine most readers will love.

Lucas doesn’t know what to think when he awakens to discover a woman has saved him, and not just any woman, a witch. By all that reigns true within him, he knows he should kill her without further thought or hesitance. His inner beast agrees. All is would take is one bite. One bite from a dragon would kill a witch. And yet, he just can’t seem to do so.

There’s something about Mae that he can’t put his finger on. She’s attractive, no doubt, but she’s his enemy. Feeling anything but murderous intent toward her was illogical. So why did he want nothing more than to throw her up on the counter and do things to make her scream in pleasure, not pain? Perhaps he’d gone too long without a woman. Perhaps her kindness soothed his inner dragon. Or perhaps there was more the Mae than he first thought. They were about to break rules that were never meant to be broken, and he just couldn’t find it within himself to care.

Lucas has a strong sense of loyalty and righteousness. While he can’t deny his overwhelming sense of protectiveness for Mae, he also can’t allow any of his fellow dragons to suffer the fate intended for him by the witch lord, Ethan. To save them all, he’s willing to put his trust and his beloved heart into the hands of a woman who’d suddenly come to mean much more to him that he wanted to admit. If she betrays him, his heart and his freedom are gone forever. These characteristics make Lucas a perfect hero, one most readers will swoon for.

Ms. Davies has penned a wonderful story between two star-crossed lovers. She’s created characters with depth and emotion, as well as a plot that will keep you entertained. A few missing words here and there were a bit distracting, but not enough to deter from the story. My only complaint is that the climax felt a bit rushed. Overall, it was a fast, fun read and I’d recommend it to anyone who loves shifter love tales.

Do you like sexy-as-hell dragons? What about pure-hearted witches? Then you’re sure to love Fiery Temptations by Virginia Davies. This is book is bound to keep you engrossed to the very last page. The Mojave Desert. The heat of the noonday sun.

A lonely stretch of highway.

A screenwriter enjoys a nostalgic visit to his childhood home of Needles, California.

But now it’s time for him to leave that simple life in the desert and drive back home to L.A. and the lure of Hollywood. The highway isn’t crowded—he hopes to make it home in time to join his wife for dinner. But apparently fate has a different idea.

He suddenly finds himself being chased by a skeleton in a pickup truck who holds a terrifying secret that will change his life forever…

Today, appalachianmagazine.com viagra sales france has helped millions of men suffering from impotence kick-start an active sex life. It’s difficult to ignore a skeleton driving a pickup truck. It’s even tougher to outrun him.

Imagine the most shocking thing you’ve encountered while travelling down a lonely stretch of highway. Multiple that by a thousand and you’ll begin to understand what kind of day Jed Ackerberry is experiencing. When Jed stops to help a woman having car troubles we see glimpses of a kind and generous (if occasionally socially awkward) man. This is the sort of trustworthy guy everyone hopes to meet when you’re stranded in the middle of nowhere.

The troubles Jed meets on his journey only made me like him more. His first experience with the truck driving skeleton was chilling. Long after I finished this book the fear of glancing over at the next lane and catching a glimpse of something so sinister still rattled around in my thoughts.

Unfortunately the twist in this tale was far too easy to unravel. As compelling as some of the scenes were I figured out what was happening almost immediately. Certain characters gave away clues so early on that logical explanations are quickly narrowed down to a handful of obvious choices. I would have preferred it if more time was needed to tease answers out of Jed’s experiences. This could have been accomplished by moving a key conversation several pages closer to the end or by condensing some of the action.

I was surprised by the final scene, though. A few short paragraphs tie up all of the loose ends, leave room for a sequel and provides additional backstory that I found particularly disturbing. Normally I am not a fan of using this device in this genre but in this case it heightened my sympathy for Jed’s predicament and made me root for him even more.

Even with some minor bumps in the road The Needles Highway is at heart a deliciously frightening tale. I highly recommend it for anyone who has been temporarily lulled into complacency while on a long trip. After all, one never knows who or what might be driving down the road next to you!
