Ryanne McCall couldn’t take another season of why aren’t you married, when are you going to have kids kind of Christmas. When she sees an ad for a single’s retreat in her inbox she doesn’t need any more of an excuse to ditch the family affair.

However, she is in for a shock when she arrives at Village Resort and discovers that “home” has followed her to Colorado, in the form of Carson Rodman. Ryanne remembered Carson as the sweet, kind, skinny boy next door with the hot older brother. She never would have imagined he’d turned out to be a successful and confident man who could halt her breath with one dark, smoldering glance.

Carson and his family had never been ‘tight-knit’ and spending holidays together never formed in their plans. After a year of nursing a bad break-up he allows his best friend to convince him they should spend the holiday on the slopes picking up single snow bunnies. When he literally bumps into a woman from his past that he has never been able to get out of his wet dreams, he knows that this wonderland vacation has turned into paradise. Years ago, he missed his chance with Ryanne, but he refuses to allow her to get away again.

Ryanne McCall is the oldest of five children all of whom are married, something her mother does not let her forget. Going home for visits means having to listen to everyone talking about their children then having them look at her and saying that one day she too will have what they have. Ryanne loves her family dearly but she does not want to be the ‘ninth’ wheel or the odd girl out. She is happy with her job and she does long for more but for now with no prospects she is content. Her friend Mattie sent her an email about a singles mixer at a ski resort in Colorado which Ryanne promptly disgarded especially since she doesn’t ski.

Carson Rodman let his friend Phillip Stifler talk him into going to a singles resort to get him out of what Phillip believed was a funk. Carson’s last relationship ended a year ago and Phillip believes that Carson is still heartbroken over it, even though Carson has tried to tell him otherwise. So Carson agreed just to get Phillip to shut up, however Carson knew he would not be able to tolerate any of the giggling women they met.

Rekindling Christmas was a very enjoyable story, filled with great characters, humor, hot sex and a good premise. Carson and Ryanne always had a connection from the time they were kids and lived next door to one another. The story was well written and I really got to know the characters, their interactions or lack of interactions with their families. I especially enjoyed Phillip with his love them and leave them attitude; he had women crawling all over him which delighted him immensely. The story moved at a good pace and the characters were very well developed.

Yvette Hines is one of those writers who can reach out, grab you and take you on a journey that will leave you wanting for more. Rekindling Christmas is one of those tomes this reader was sad to see end.

Surprise! Surprise!

Thank you for having me here at Long and Short Reviews! Now that a few weeks have gone by since the publication of my first book, A Royal Pain, I am beginning to feel normal again. Or, you know, as normal as I ever was…which is not very.

That whole thing about nothing to fear but fear itself? That’s mostly true. The fear of the unknown, at least, has passed. It has happened! I am a published author! Still, there have been a few surprises that I didn’t see coming. A friend suggested I write about the surprises. So. Here goes:

Surprise 1. There are still people who will happily pay $15 for a trade paperback.

I am such a hardcore devourer of books that I have to operate on a very strict budget. I rarely spend more than $6.99. I go to the library for hardcover new releases. I wait for e-books to go on sale. I shop the used book sections of my local thrift stores on a regular basis. If I spent $15 on every book I read, that’d put my annual reading habit at *mental computing* roughly $2,500. This is probably all wrong of me to confess when I am supposedly in this game to sell books, but there you have it. (Speaking of bargains, A Royal Pain is free to members of the Romance Ebook Club, Discover A New Love.

Surprise 2. I remain baffled that people are actually reading my book.

I thought it would have worn off by now, after a few weeks, this feeling of wanting to hug every single person who has read A Royal Pain. Whether they loved it or hated it (my apologies to the latter…please see below for cookie offer), they took time out of their lives to read my words. Just. How surprising is that? It’s crazy. I am new. I am nobody. (Just took a moment to re-watch one of my favorite scenes in all of cinema. No. Not the break-in scene from Rififi. Steve Martin in The Jerk) Anyway, I am an unknown commodity. People are taking a risk. I’m amazed. I’m grateful.

Surprise 3. Reviews do not roll off me like water on a duck’s back.

It probably sounds stupid, but I did not adequately prepare for what it would feel like to have lots of people really (really) analyzing the hell out of my words. I’ve been through all sorts of assessments at jobs, hardcore edits, performance reviews—you name it. I’ve been raked over the coals many (many) times in this here life. I’m pretty tough. But. Wow. When someone is really disappointed in a book that was written with the overarching desire to bring pleasure? I don’t know where to go with that. I want to bake them cookies and write an apology note for their time. And I’m not trying to change their experience at all because I am a huge believer in the book becoming the experience of the reader, and not always being the property or the possession of the author. I put it out there. I knew what I was doing. It’s the reader’s book now to interpret any which way. As the astute Miranda Neville advised, “There’s nothing you can do about bad reviews except keep quiet and drink gin.” I have tried to follow her advice to the letter!

Have you ever thought you were prepared for something, only to be really surprised? (Matrimony springs to mind.)

Thanks again for having me!

Money, charm and sensual skills don’t make up for a heart colder than ice…

Wild parties, wanton women, relentless work—nothing helps tycoon Lucas Jackson escape his dark and haunting past. Arriving at his rural castle in a snarling snowstorm, he craves only complete isolation.… But it seems oblivion can take an unexpected and highly intoxicating form!

Personally delivering the vital file left on her boss’s desk, secretary Emma Gray starts to seriously regret her dutiful overtime mission. She never expected the dark side of the usually controlled Lucas could generate such a primitive, powerful—and entirely inappropriate—reaction.

How do you heal a man who is in so much emotional pain that he deals with it by getting drunk as a skunk on the anniversary date of the tragic event? How does a woman get beyond the fortress that surrounds that man’s heart and reteach him how to live and love again? With a little help from his friends, even ones he didn’t realize he had.

It’s a believable pain that Lucas, the hero, suffers and once I found out what it was, it was very sad. The sniffles came towards the last half of the book when one of his best friends hatches a plan that, although risky, produced feelings of tentative hope and happy tears because of the participants in that scene. I wouldn’t put it past readers to melt into a pile of goo when it comes to the toast part.

One of the participants of the drama is Emma, the intrepid heroine. I say intrepid because she has such a strong sense of duty, she ends up personifying the Mailman’s Creed, “Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night stays these couriers from being as dedicated as the mailman…”. Truthfully, Emma ends up taking things a bit farther than expected and the results are scorching. Then they become the elephant in the room. How she navigates these passionate feelings for her boss is one of the more entertaining and fascinating elements of this story.

Of course, a tycoon and a savvy and powerful businessman has to have a wary and cynical view of the world. Women don’t want Lucas for his brains and art but what lines his pockets. There’s the requisite troublesome female but what I liked about Emma is her ability to see through their shenanigans. The author side-stepped that cliché quite thoroughly by making the heroine smart, capable and pretty much a type A personality – gold-digging she-cats don’t stand a chance against her. Nor does, Lucas. When Emma is guided by secondary character Avery Scott in how to dress, it was awesome. Why? Because a reader gets to see Lucas, a very self-contained man, come unglued. He starts acting very unlike himself and it was adorably entertaining.

This book also refers to the Ferrara family and it was a treat for me because I’ve been able to read quite a few of their romances. I adore world-building like this because when an author does include previous heroes and heroines from past books to help the present protagonists, it gives me the warm and fuzzies. Probably because they were awesome books in and of themselves and Ms. Morgan knows her characters so well, a reader gets little reminders of why they appealed in the first place. They have ‘presence” and Lucas fits in perfectly.

A Night of No Return romances a reader’s emotions with a wonderful and touching story spiced with the special kind of loving Ms. Morgan writes so well. It’s a book about people. She once again explores what makes us human, and our ability to be healed by the love of our friends and that one special person that cares for us deeply despite and in spite of all our faults. If a reader is looking for a “feel good” book, then this one satisfies.

Angelique needs a scandal so outrageous it will shock all of Paris, and she has managed to find the two men who will help her enact it.

In the France of Louis XIV, Angelique Beaulieu’s stepfather is forcing her to marry the aging and degenerate Marquis D’Arly.

Made desperate by the Marquis’ threats of violence, Angelique visits a notorious Parisian hôtel where patrons indulge in wild sexual adventures. There, she meets the angelic looking Christophe and his dark and brooding friend Armand. The three of them indulge in an orgy of sensual delight.

Angelique believes her actions have freed her from the Marquis…until she is abducted and learns that her connection to Christophe and Armand has become a threat to her very existence.

A Boudoir for Three is a classic tale of desperate times call for desperate measures!

We meet Angelique as her evil stepfather delivers the news that she’s to be married. Given no choice in the matter, she quickly learns that her bethrowed is a vile, evil man. After an eye opening encounter, Angelique decides no matter what it takes she will not be his next victim. Overhearing a conversation between the servants, she learns of a secret “hotel” where debauchery abounds. She stows away into the night to solve all her problems, or so she thinks.

At said hotel, she meets Christophe and Armand. The two close friends, after hearing her unfortunate circumstances, decide to aid her in her plight to lose what her evil betrothed values most, her virginity.

Christophe is your typical Prince Charming with the heart of gold while Armand is the dark, angry brooding counterpart of the duo. Christophe was very much ‘what you see is what you get’ and Armand carries ulterior motives when it comes to Angelique. When Angelique’s fortune takes a turn for the worse, the men must come to her rescue.

After reading this book, I felt as though there were things missing from the story. How did the men meet and become so close? When Angelique was away from the men, what were the men feeling and how did it change them? There was some backstory missing that could’ve helped the plot. Also, the love scenes were missing a certain connection between the three.

Ms. Ellis did do a great job of creating the desperation that Angelique felt at her unlucky hand that was dealt to her. The villains were well written and created enough emotion that you wanted to do them bodily harm. The author stayed true to the time period and some of the proclivities that typically happened then.

Overall, the book was a good read and anyone who enjoys historicals with a bit of spice, Prince Charming or a broody hero then luckily this book has it all!

In 2015, a race of alien Others conquered Earth. They enslaved humanity not by force, but through an aggressive mind control that turned people into contented, unquestioning robots.

Except sixteen-year-old Althea isn’t content at all, and she doesn’t need the mysterious note inside her locket to tell her she’s Something Else. It also warns her to trust no one, so she hides the pieces that make her different, even though it means being alone.

Then she meets Lucas, everything changes.

Althea and Lucas are immune to the alien mind control, and together they search for the reason why. What they uncover is a stunning truth the Others never anticipated, one with the potential to free the brainwashed human race.

It’s not who they are that makes them special, but what.

And what they are is a threat. One the Others are determined to eliminate for good.

Utterly enthralling, Whispers in Autumn has an immediacy that keeps you on the edge of your seat from beginning to end. The mood is serious…or perhaps, seriously creepy. For this is a dark world not embattled, but controlled; a society not of revolutionaries, but anxious sheep… except for the odd one, here and there. The ‘broken.’

Whispers in Autumn  kicks off with teenage Althea’s own, immediate (yet intriguing) problems, a first-person account with identity issues. Her experience is outside our world – it is in fact, outside her own world – or so it seems. However, it isn’t long before we start to share Althea’s sense that things are not, truly not, quite right, with the world. We settle into her autumn persona, come to know her ‘family’ and realize with her that things are not right. Her developing power seems to have purpose…

We puzzle over the issue of just who or what Althea is, all the while realizing that her issues are not her own, and that this truly is a world (or society) shattering … or perhaps saving…story. The story grows from the miniscule to the massive. And, every minute, this story becomes more and more eerie and unpredictable.

In this dark society, people’s own lives are beyond both their understanding as well as control. Yet, they fail to perceive this horrifying truth. They are under the jurisdiction of the ‘wardens.’ They hardly recognize that they have lived a lifetime of fear. Some (okay, most) seem to think the wardens are a benevolent group…but there, Althea has doubts. Or fears. She recognizes manipulation; we recognize misinformation. When Althea meets Lucas, well, the doubts become solid distrust. She and Lucas will perhaps change the world… we hope.

Trisha Leigh handles this other-worldly society in a straightforward and completely believable way. The author’s world building skills rival her character creation skills; and the best way to talk about that is to bring you into one of Althea’s moments.

Wardens—two this time—tread heavily down the street sweeping flashlights in an arc. I hold my breath, body vibrating as Lucas sucks his in as well. If my heart weren’t pounding from terror it would be struggling with such nearness to a boy—to another human being, really. His peculiar scent mingles with my own odd fragrance, creating a not entirely unpleasant mixture that hovers around us in a cloud. I fervently hope it doesn’t extend to the sidewalk because if the Wardens smell it, they…”

The smallest details bring with it such intensity in this story. Although the big questions are out there, it is ultimately the characters who drive this story.

Whispers in Autumn is a noir mix of psychological horror and unpredictable fantasy that had me completely engrossed throughout. You don’t need to be a fan of the genre to find this an exceptional read.  I am anxiously waiting for the next, and a chance to see what happens in Iowa in the winter.

Alexa is young, sexy and single in New York. She’s also alone. But she doesn’t want to date any more of the stuffy men she meets through her job at the law firm – she needs some excitement. When she meets hunky Lorne, a film score composer, at a premiere after-party, she can’t believe her luck when he asks her out.

After an incredibly hot night of sex, when it seems that this is just the relationship she’s been waiting for, things inexplicably cool down. Does his best friend and roommate, the dangerously handsome Antony, have anything to do with it?

One night the truth of Lorne and Antony’s relationship is revealed to Alexa, and she has a difficult choice to make. Is she willing to just let go and become their perfect third?

Reader Advisory: This story contains anal penetration, sex toys and BDSM.

Just how do two hot guys go about finding the perfect soul mate – to share!

Alexa is young and single and living in New York. She hasn’t dated for a while and is on the look out for love. So when she meets Lorne, a drop-dead-gorgeous musician, she is only to happy to enjoy a night of fun between the sheets with him. The thing is, in the morning she feels there was more than a one night stand in their destiny. So how come he doesn’t want to spend the day with her? Because, unbeknown to Alexa, Lorne does want more, but unless Antony approves of Alexa, that will never, ever happen.

The Perfect Third is a seriously sexy read. I liked all of the characters, Alexa was very real with her anxieties, Lorne a gentleman and Antony had the brooding, deep soul quality that always appeals to me. The strong bond between the two men was well portrayed and while not being in your face sexual there was a whiff of homosexuality that made me curious.

The sex scenes were off the scale raunchy, anal play being a big focus right from the word go. Lorne was particularly keen on giving Alexa’s anus lots of love, licks and kisses. Alexa enjoyed herself even though her emotions were slung about. The author did a good job of keeping me wondering how it was all going to work out for her.

As a reader I prefer character names to not start with the same letter, its easier on my eyes and brain! That’s just my preference though. But if you enjoy ménage a trois stories, the The Perfect Third is well worth a read. Hot guys, a willing girl and an ending that left me panting for more – I hope there will be!

Logan Screwed Up…Big Time

When things go bump in the night, Logan bumps back. Vampires, demons, succubi—you name it, he’s fought it. His job as Paladin angel warrior is to protect humans. Not fall for one.

She Never Believed in Divine Intervention…Until Now

Detective Jessica Waters protects humans too-with her Glock and a good set of handcuffs. She doesn’t believe in fate. But if anyone looks like a gift from the gods, it’s Logan. And he clearly knows more about her case than he’s letting on…

Detective Jessica Waters should have never been in that dark alley that night in the first place. She knew better than to not bring backup, but had she not been there, she would have never had the chance to meet Logan and remember what real emotions feel like.

Logan and Jessica both seem to be missing a piece of themselves. Jessica clearly has some commitment issues and emotional blocks that make her a great cop but also make it hard for her to develop relationships. Logan’s largest issue is that he has the weight of the world on his shoulders and wants to save everyone. These qualities really made me root for the characters because I can see that they both truly needed one another even if they did not realize it.

One thing about Jessica’s character that somewhat puzzled me was that she was so headstrong she seems to lead herself into trouble. It made me question how she ever survived before Logan showed up. While I appreciated this characteristic about her because I can relate to it, I sometime wished she would use just a bit more common sense or self-preservation.

The plot was amazing. I loved the way the author blended religious beliefs, mythology, and fiction to create a wonderful story. I also liked that Logan and his follow warriors are not what you would typically think of as angels or God’s warriors. While they may be angelic, their humanity and decision making plays a large role in who they are, and the way they handle certain situations. It truly made for an interested read and kept the pages turning. I will certainly look for more stories in this series in the future as well as recommend it to others.

Truman Durant has two painful secrets. One keeps him in the closet and the other hangs inside his closet. Letting either out seems like the equivalent of suicide to him. He didn’t know just how badly he needed Stasi Manolis until he found himself in the pushy Greek’s sights. Would giving up his secrets and maybe falling in love really be so bad?

Sometimes it’s the help you need, not necessarily the help you want. Truman is trying to get through college with his head down and focus on his classes and athletics. He has nowhere else to live so he puts on the façade and lives in a very macho frat on campus. The last thing Truman thinks he wants is a stubborn, gorgeous, openly gay Greek that won’t leave him alone. Stasi knows a good man when he sees it and he sees beyond the image Truman puts up to the needy, alone man beneath. Determined to give him what he wants and needs, Stasi never gives up despite Truman’s many protests. But finally winning Truman isn’t enough.

Your Biggest Fan, is a fun start  to a new series by Welsh. I’m not sure if the focus will be this one couple as there are numerous secondary couples that could be featured in upcoming novels. In this particular book, Truman and Stasi are the main couple. They’re opposites but manage to find common ground. Truman is a closeted jock with a cross-dressing kink. After a bad incident in this past, Truman is literally terrified of anyone finding out about his secret. Stasi isn’t fazed though and handles all revelations pretty well and with ease. Together the two men are nicely described and feel genuine. They have the same flaws and fears of young men just out of high school.

The book tackles the concept of cross-dressing and its perception in a semi-successful way. On the one hand, it shows how some see this as a kink and a turn on while others find it even worse than just being gay. The various characters in the book tend to be overly supportive and fine with Truman’s secrets while there is one lone antagonist that is easily overcome. This is the part of the book where it lost me as it just seemed too fast and too easy. A week or two having sex on the sly with Stasi and suddenly the entire world is accepting of Truman and his cross-dressing. It makes for a nice resolution and a very happy ending for two deserving young men, but didn’t feel exactly realistic or authentic.

Your Biggest Fan is a nice introduction to a new world. The various other men introduced will likely star on their own or appear again and it makes a warm, enticing atmosphere. It may not be the most realistic or true to life but at the same time it’s the kind of Greek life that really should exist. Perhaps it’s a utopia, but I don’t think readers will mind visiting.

Jamey Mandel has life pretty good. But things may not be as good as they seem. Jamey and his girlfriend Tina Kane argue constantly. When Jamey finally gets tired of the fighting and ends the relationship, Tina almost immediately starts dating–and sleeping with–another guy. And then, a few weeks later, rumors start flying that Tina’s pregnant and that her new boyfriend wants nothing to do with her or the baby.Tina comes to Jamey for advice, and he brushes her off. When Tina takes drastic action, Jamey blames himself. Too late, he realizes that he might have been able to help her if he’d just listened.

What happens when high school isn’t the best time of your life after all?

Not only does Jamey genuinely like his parents but he listens to (most of) what they have to say and while he loves his girlfriend he’s in no rush to become sexually active with her. In fact, she’s the one who is pushing him for sex! Too often young adult fiction portrays guys Jamey’s age in a rather stereotypical manner. It’s refreshing to meet a character who breaks the mold without coming across as an after school special.

Unfortunately the dialogue doesn’t sound like it came from modern day high school students. Their speech patters were a little too formal and didn’t include the slang that one would expect sixteen year olds to fall back upon when out of earshot of adults. For example, in one of the first scenes Tina and Jamey argue about “making love”, a phrase that most high schoolers probably wouldn’t use in earnestness when talking about sex with their boyfriend or girlfriend.

I would have also liked to see more time spent explaining something terrible that happens to a secondary character. While she does show signs of being impulsive early on I had trouble making the connection between those scenes and what happens later on in the plot. It would have been nice to see a more nuanced treatment of this individual before pushing her in the direction the author wanted her to go. Without this information what happens to her becomes a little less believable which is a real shame as she was quite interesting.

Due to controversial subject matter and some potentially disturbing scenes I cannot recommend this story for younger teens. Some of the young adult books I’ve reviewed in the past can be enjoyed by people a few years younger than the age I end up suggesting. This is not one of those tales. With that being said, older teenagers will find kindred spirits in characters that are going through difficult social, emotional and medical issues that many young adults experience.

Even with its flaws Cluing In provides a wonderful introduction to tough conversations for people of all ages who are looking for a good way to start a dialogue. From abuse to eating disorders almost every topic is addressed with the utmost respect and compassion.

Shipwreck! Can a novice sorceress and brilliant cat save their otherwise doomed companions?

An outburst of her newly awakened, uncontrolled sorcery talent made twelve-year-old Dory a fugitive. Trouble, her indomitable cat, led her into a walled garden minutes ahead of the mob pursuing her. There they encountered Martin, a powerful sorcerer, who agreed to hide and teach her and used his arts to advance her age to that of a young woman.

Some weeks later, Martin permits her and Trouble to accompany two gem merchants on a trading voyage. Following a storm, their ship goes to the aid of a sinking vessel grossly overcrowded with young migrant workers. The rescue is a success, but Dory’s ship is seriously damaged and begins founderin. With no room in the lifeboats for all those now aboard, many are doomed. Only Dory’s untried power can save everyone – if it will rise for her and if she can control and wield it correctly.

Dory is a servant to the farrier, Jocko, and his wife. He has a drinking problem and he resents every penny she takes for care. His favorite sport is to beat on her. One night he gets out of control and she magically gives him donkey ears. She knows she must run or he will kill her. Magic is illegal and he wants his normal ears back! Her thought was that any place had to be better than living with Jocko. She doesn’t realize when she goes over the fence and falls into a garden she has also fallen into a new life…

Ms. Griffin’s words float across the page and lead you into a new world of wonder. She writes an exciting tale with varied characters. All her characters have strong personalities and good souls. She intersperses magic here and there and that enhances the story line and makes it a stronger story.

Dory must give up her childhood to stay in the village. She’s twelve and becomes a teenager in minutes while standing in the sorcerer’s house. She’s okay with that, but now must learn how to become a young lady. Her lessons in ladyhood are amusing and her lessons in magic are challenging.

Everything changes for her when she decides to travel with two gem merchants and learn what she can from them. Martin is a bit hesitant about letting her go since her magic is still undeveloped, but it is a good opportunity for her.

The author gives Dory a huge challenge. The ship they are on runs into a typhoon. Watching this young woman trying to develop her skills while under extreme duress is fascinating. For each thing she accomplishes, there is another challenge facing her.

I read this story quickly and enjoyed every word. I am fond enough of it that I have bought my own copy so I can read it again. I found this one to be a keeper and I think you’ll enjoy the adventure, too. It’s a good fantasy and I hope to see a sequel to it.
