Sometimes the package hides the true excitement inside.

I love the work of DC Juris. I know it’s always going to be something new and fresh each time. A Brown-Eyed Handsome Man is no different. The words flowed and the story snagged me within moments. By the end of the first page, I was invested in the characters and had to know more.

I admit, at first I wasn’t sure I’d like Drake. Not because of who he is or what he is, but his motivations. But I quickly changed my mind. I could identify with his frustration and confusion. Everyone wants to be loved for who they are, not what they look like.

Jason was a character I wanted to see get redemption, but I loved the reason why he was the way he was. The realism stuck with me, making me think about all of the characters long after the last page.

The sex in this story is rather tame for Torquere, but the sweetness is just what the book needed. The tender touches between Rocky and Drake were great to read.

If you’re in a mood for a romance that’s a little off the beaten path, but worth every moment of reading, then this might be the book for you.

stop the press: Jilted Bride Stranded with a Notorious Playboy!

Anna Constantinides, publicly humiliated when her long-time fiancee announced his engagement to someone else, might have thought things couldn’t get any worse…. Until her private jet crash-landed on an uninhabited island, leaving her stranded with billionaire hotel magnate Leo Jackson. Renowned playboy Leo’s reputation is legendary, and if the smoldering looks they were fighting to contain when rescued are anything to go by, there can only be one question on everybody’s lips: just how long did it take wickedly sexy Leo to undress buttoned-up heiress Anna?

It has been a while since I read a book that kept me up all throughout the hours of the night the way this one did. I just keep telling myself one more page, and I could not put it down.

Anna Constantinides is a sweet woman who thought she did everything perfectly to fulfill her destiny of becoming queen. Yet her fiancé still choose another woman to claim as his bride. With such a high profile relationship of course the breakup was just as high profile. So not only did she have to deal with a broken heart, but the scandal and constant media attention. My heart truly went out to her and it reminded me of what celebrities really go through. I could not imagine my personal life being anything but personal and private. It made me hope that she could get a brief moment of reprieve even if she found it on a island stranded with a hot stranger.

Leo has also lived his life in the media’s eye but he compensates with it differently. While Anna just hopes it will all disappear Leo seems to just ignore it and sometimes even play it up for amusement. This attitude is what made me realize immediately he was just what Anna needed to learn to let her hair down and just enjoy life. Whether it be for a few hours or the rest of her life.

The relationship development within this story is that slow burn you expect from traditional romance novels. At times I really appreciated the build-up of emotions, other times I just wished they would stop dancing around one another and put everything out on the table. This roller coaster of emotions really helped to keep me enthralled in the storyline. I’m not usually a fan of traditional romance but this story made me re-think my view on my mother’s old romance novels she cherishes. This is a story I can see any woman enjoying regardless of age, and that is why I would have no problem recommending it.

Street Callan wants only one thing from the sultry voluptuous woman in red heels, a night of steamy, unadulterated sex.

Na’arah Simmons has no problem submitting to Street’s seductive allure, since she shares in the attraction.

When their one night stand leaves her with an unplanned souvenir, his less than desired response will force her to move on. However, when she’s the only witness to a brutal murder, Na’arah has only Street to turn to if she wants to save herself and her unborn child.

Rue ‘Street’ Callan saw her as she entered the bar, there she was the woman of his dreams. He knew her because she was the masseuse that worked across the street at the spa that his uncle Auggie owned. Street had to stop getting massages from her because he was too attracted to her and did not want to embarrass himself. Yet, he could not get the feel of her hands on his body out of his mind, and there she was in a pair of hot red shoes.

Na’arah was the designated driver for her sister and her friends, a job that she took because of the red shoes her sister bribed her with. She also had an attraction to Street but couldn’t understand why he stopped coming to her for his massages. Maybe he wasn’t attracted to her and he didn’t see her the way she would have liked him to see her.

Street Safe is a story of mutual attraction that ignites and burns hot. It also has characters that were realistic and fun, especially her sister Zee who would think nothing of pulling a knife on someone. The heat between Street and Na’arah as well as between Zee and the sheriff Miles was jumping off the page. There was also a twist when Na’arah helped his uncle Auggie and ended up being hunted by the men who were after Auggie. The only negative this reader found is that the story is not finished, it ended but on a cliffhanger. Hopefully the author will come out with the sequel and tie up all the loose ends which this reader is looking forward to. Street Safe is a good way to spend an evening, just get in your comfy chair, get a glass of wine and read.

Velveteen Monroe is dead. At 16, she was kidnapped and murdered by a madman named Bonesaw. But that’s not the problem.

The problem is she landed in purgatory. And while it’s not a fiery inferno, it’s certainly no heaven. It’s gray, ashen, and crumbling more and more by the day, and everyone has a job to do. Which doesn’t leave Velveteen much time to do anything about what’s really on her mind.

Bonesaw.

Velveteen aches to deliver the bloody punishment her killer deserves. And she’s figured out just how to do it. She’ll haunt him for the rest of his days.

It’ll be brutal… and awesome.

But crossing the divide between the living and the dead has devastating consequences. Velveteen’s obsessive haunting cracks the foundations of purgatory and jeopardizes her very soul. A risk she’s willing to take—except fate has just given her reason to stick around: an unreasonably hot and completely off-limits coworker.

Velveteen can’t help herself when it comes to breaking rules… or getting revenge. And she just might be angry enough to take everyone down with her.

Revenge can be so much fun. Just ask sixteen-year-old Velveteen Monroe. Murdered by a local serial killer, her sole ambition in the afterlife is to exact justice for what he did to her. Trouble is, Purgatory is crumbling around her, leaving it up to her – and her team of experts – to stop the shadowquakes before they tear it all apart.

Velveteen Monroe is gothy, snarky, and generally unlikeable… until you get to know her a bit. Although some of her rougher characteristics are still evident, she’s much more likely to let her softer side show. Which, between you and me, drives her just a bit crazy when it happens. I really like Velvet, despite her rather grumpy exterior. She’s honest to a fault and has a larger mission on her mind. Not just justice for herself, but for the others that have or might have to go through what she did with Bonesaw. Velvet is also a born leader, one who commands attention with little effort and earns the respect of all those that serve with her.

Nick is something else altogether. After Velvet and her crew free him from imprisonment in a crystal ball, he’s a mess. He’s lost, he’s frightened, and he’s more than a little disoriented. However, in true hero fashion, it doesn’t take him long to get it together and become a real part of the team. Not to mention falling completely for Velvet, abrasiveness and all. His effusive personality and well-timed humor only serve to make me adore him more.

While Velveteen isn’t laden with offensive material, I’d still recommend it for an older audience, at least 14+, due to some graphic violence and the budding romance between Velvet and Nick.

Velveteen is a highly enjoyable story chock full of colorful characters and enough twists and turns to keep you on your toes. I loved the way Mr. Marks envisioned Purgatory in this novel. It became just a bit more bleak and terrifying than I had ever pictured it, giving it new life. The afterlife hasn’t ever been so much fun – or so dangerous – until now.

The bombs have fallen, and the world as we know it has ended. In her final days, one robotics engineer works to ensure that life will go on, constructing the creatures that will inherit the earth. New times are coming. The future echoes with the rattle of metal claws.

When death stares at you from a dark corner of the room it’s only a matter of time before you must follow him. In the meantime would you prefer to seek out the companionship of loved ones or finish an extraordinary task?

One of the scariest things I can imagine is knowing when and how you will die and being powerless to prevent it. The individuals I’ve known who have received this knowledge reacted to it in a variety of ways. Some were so ill that they accepted it quietly and others raged until the end. The protagonist knows she’s absorbed too much radiation to survive longer than a few days. While she’s still alive she decides to use the skills she’s gained working as a scientist to create something marvelous.

What I found most interesting about her narrative is that clues are planted from the beginning that point to two different interpretations of what actually happens. I found myself drawn to the more pessimistic explanation of the two but I can also see how the happier theory could be the one the author prefers. In the end it’s up to the reader to decide which one he or she wants to believe in and for this story that tactic works well.

The narrator is described as someone who has spent her entire adult life preventing other people from getting too close to her. A few well-placed flashbacks provide concrete examples of this behaviour and explain why she’s all alone in her lab after everyone else has fled. Her talent for shutting others out made it difficult for me to sympathize with her, though, because she came across as a cold, unfeeling individual. We never even learn her name. Due to this I had trouble becoming emotionally invested in her and her mission.

Love and Sex Among the Invertebrates is a solid tale that kept me up past bedtime wondering how I’d react to the end of my species. I’d recommend it to anyone who has ever grown wistful in the presence of fossils or wished they could know what will happen to the earth after mankind’s reign is finished.

Lindy thinks her life is defined by her wheelchair, but one secret admirer sees more—he sees Hot Wheels.

Lindy Harris is a quiet, studious high school student who’s in love with books. When she sees a note written in her favorite poetry book to “Hot Wheels”, she’s in disbelief. That’s when she realizes the book belonged to the sender—Mark Ferry, the student body president. She’s all but convinced when she finds out that he, of all people, wants to go out with her.

Will Lindy’s doubts sabotage her chance at love?

Ms. Campbell has certainly captured the drama filled days of high school in this story. Lindy is a sweet girl trying to cope with the trials and pressures of being a disabled teenager. I think Ms Campbell gives just enough detail concerning the tragedy that cost Lindy the use of her legs while keeping the plot moving at a good pace. Though Lindy and her mother have certainly come to terms with Lindy’s situation, their pain and regret still comes through very clearly in regular conversations as well as their actions.

Lindy is a very easy character to like. She’s smart, sensitive, and has a great appreciation for books. My heart ached when Lindy broke down and cried in the bathroom. I know I certainly had some moments like that when I was going through high school. While Lindy’s problems are very specific to her situation, I think most teenage girls can relate to needing to have a good cry somewhere private. Though Lindy is a little awkward in social situations, I like the fact that she is still open to forming new relationships. Her friendship with Ann is certainly a bright spot in Lindy’s life. Though the girls become friends very quickly, I believe their bond is authentic.

I do wish some of the secondary characters, especially Mark, were a bit more rounded. Mark seems too good to be true. I can certainly understand Lindy’s hesitation to become involved with him because if something sounds too good to be true, it usually is. Mark’s lack of flaws kept him from truly coming to life in my mind. However, I did find Mark’s nervousness endearing. The moments he blushed as much as Lindy were particularly enjoyable.

I did find the plot of Hot Wheels to be fairly predictable. As soon as certain events were set into motion, I knew almost exactly how things were going to play out. While this meant there was very little surprise regarding the story line, I still enjoyed getting to know Lindy and watching her interact with those around her.

Overall, I enjoyed reading Hot Wheels. It is a fun, fast paced story filled with all the turmoil and excitement of high school life.

Violence, intrigue, and passion are brewing in the craft beer world. When bitter rivals Jennifer Baxter and Sean Garrison meet, the notorious and handsome owner of Garrison Brothers Brewing stays true to form, seducing his rival at a national brewer’s convention.

Sean arrived at the convention expecting to get down to business, including his stated goal of hiring Jen away from Brick Street Brewery. But the beautiful fellow craft beer expert provides more of a distraction than he expected.

When sabotage strikes their fellow breweries, they unite to solve the mysteries. But fate and rumors brew more than beer as love, lust, jealousy, and misunderstanding collide in a way neither could have expected or anticipated.

Can they overcome the malicious chatter long enough to explore the emotion bubbling beneath the surface? Or will lust fall flat and leave them nothing but memories of the moment that slipped away?

Jen Baxter’s brewery has made a new product, Cheeky Blonde, an Imperial pale ale. At the coming out party during the National Beer festival Jen meets Sean Garrison who owns a rival brewery. Even though Jen and Sean initially barely exchange more than a dozen words she’s left with a powerful craving for him she can’t deny. When he searches her out after the party the simmering passion explodes. Their impulsive action sends shockwaves not only through the media – who are covering the conference/festivities – but also through their businesses.

This is a fast paced sexy romp of a book. Revolving around breweries, business competition and the media attention that can surround them, I found the plot different and interesting to read. The chemistry between Jen and Sean is hot and sucks you in immediately. Sean is not your typical alpha-male, though he is determined to have his cake and eat it too. Sean’s character is delightfully complex and not entirely what we’re first led to believe. Jen is more than a match for him in many respects. These two butt heads and still manage to burn up the sheets, not something that is always balanced properly, but it shines in this book.

There’s a strong cast of secondary characters, and a few sub-plots intertwined around this. Most noteworthy is Sean’s bitchy ex-wife who is a bucket load of trouble, Sean’s twin brother, Liam and Jen’s brewery partner and off-again/on-again bed buddy, Dylan. I particularly liked Dylan, who was really well rounded and a truly intriguing character. I’d love to read his story in the future. I really enjoyed reading this book and would certainly read other pieces by Ms. Crowe.

Augmented reality has the potential to bring digital artifices to the real world. AR gurus constantly speak of geo-location, intuitive search, the Internet of Things and other such high concepts. Digital natives squeeze efficient behavior out of a chaotic world, using their social media, smartphones and apps.

What if we applied those concepts to our lives through a living breathing game designed to make our civilization more efficient than the others? Much the same way we are using No Child Left Behind to apply testing to our school systems to make the US more competitive in a global market. Does testing and measuring and keeping score make people better? Can an algorithm be applied to every skill? How does one nurture innovation?

These are all the questions, and more, that I asked myself when thinking about the world of Gamers. What would our society be like if everything was a game designed to make us better?

Life isn’t all fun and games, even when it’s really a game. Gabby DeCorte finds out that when you’re on top, there’s still plenty of opportunity to fall. The game becomes all too real when secrets are exposed and danger is ahead. There’s much more at stake than just collecting points and winning. So much more….

If you’ve ever imagined yourself stuck in the middle of a game, you might want to rethink things after reading Gamers. First in a trilogy, we’re introduced to LifeGame, which on the outside appears to be an every day life occurrence. Wake up, it’s not! There’s more to it than that. Gabby, being a hacker, and one of the best at the LifeGame, will soon learn this, as she’s taken on an adventure unlike she’d ever imagined.

The world created in this story is pretty intriguing, although to be honest, there’s still a lot of holes. That could very be due to the fact that there are two more books in this trilogy, and that there will be plenty of times in either of those two for answers.

I like Gabby. She’s a strong heroine and makes for a great leading character. Her passion to succeed is evident, but she also holds herself back for a reason. What’s that you ask? Read the book and find out! Let’s just say she cares about others and many times puts them before herself. I am definitely interested to see how the story plays out, as Gamers is simply just the beginning.

If you like books that are set in an alternate world with plenty of action and intrigue, and aren’t afraid to try your hand at a new game in life, then check out Gamers. Grab a copy and hold on tight.

Kachina Raven is a Reconnaissance Agent for the Vampire Eradication Network.

One night while escaping a murderous cult of vampire wannabes, she meets Kael. There is an immediate attraction but she knows there is something odd about him. He has some very unusual skills and abilities. She’s sure he isn’t a vampire but knows he’s no ordinary human either.

She knows she’ll always be stalked by vampires and doesn’t want to put anyone else at risk by having a relationship with them. Her life is further complicated by the relentless pursuit of a homeland security agent.

Kael is an alpha male used being the protector but Raven makes it clear she can fight her own battles. He’s frustrated by her refusal to acknowledge the strength of the attraction between them and is determined to have her as his mate.

After wrapping her motorcycle around a tree, Raven seeks the safety of a large biker pub to escape the vampire cult goons chasing after her. Drawing many of the customers’ attention, it’s Kael whose gaze she senses most sharply. The attraction between them is electric, instant and undeniable. When a number of the cult members – and their vampire leader – track her to the pub, the situation becomes dire. Kael and Raven escape together, and start down a long and winding path neither could have forseen.

This is a quick-moving, action packed vampire and werewolf book. The characters are gritty and modern, tough but still quite easily relatable to. I thoroughly enjoyed both the dense plot and the multi-layered, complex characters. Raven is a seriously kick-ass vampire hunter with slick moves and five years experience under her belt. Although mostly human and fallible, she is not some lame, half-baked wanna be.

Matching her perfectly, Kael is an alpha werewolf, with keen senses and more than a few tricks up his sleeve. While always clearly explained and understandable, I got a little frustrated with Raven and Kael not trusting each other. Instead of using any and all resources – including each other – I found it strange they’d run from one another despite the attraction neither denies. Despite this and a few other small niggles I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Especially as the first in a series it started on a high note – the plot is convoluted and engrossing, the characters are strongly written and practically jump from the page.

There is a bit of back-story to catch up with and sometimes took me a moment or two to follow along with what was going on, but those times were easily overshadowed by the action and characterization. Overall I’d certainly recommend this book to paranormal readers, especially ones that like a bit of spice and plenty of heat in their romance. There are a number of other well-written, strong secondary characters from both the Vampire Eradication Network and I’d certainly expect more follow up books in this series.

Lady Philippa Marbury is odd. The bespectacled, brilliant fourth daughter of the Marquess of Needham and Dolby cares more for books than balls, flora than fashion and science than the season. Nearly engaged to Lord Castleton, Pippa wants to explore the scandalous parts of London she’s never seen before marriage. And she knows just who to ask: the tall, charming, quick-witted bookkeeper of The Fallen Angel, London’s most notorious and coveted gaming hell, known only as Cross.

Like any good scientist, Pippa’s done her research and Cross’s reputation makes him perfect for her scheme. She wants science without emotion – the experience of ruination without the repercussions of ruination. And who better to provide her with the experience than this legendary man? But when this odd, unexpected female propositions Cross, it’s more than tempting . . . and it will take everything he has to resist following his instincts – and giving the lady precisely what she wants.

Humor, subtle and sophisticated, skitters through the story as the characters entice the reader into an awesome vicarious experience with a heroine that has moxie and the ‘know-how’ to save the hero while he is trying to save her.

The odd, bespectacled Lady Philippa, Pippa, needs facts and needs them NOW. In fourteen days she’s to marry and she has no facts about procreation which will be one of her most important duties. She is a person of science, intelligent, quick-witted, practical, and never been kissed.

She’s deduced from tea party gossip that the act necessary for procreation brings “ruination” for an unmarried lady but is acceptable and even a ‘duty’ after marriage. She also deduced from gossip that the foremost expert in the act of “ruination” is Mr. Cross of the Fallen Angel, the most prestigious gambling hell in London. She needs him for her research ‘assistant’.

Cross aka Jasper Arlesey, Earl Harlow is horrified to find an unescorted lady, even if she is an odd lady, in his den of iniquity where sin and darkness abide. Her scent of sunshine and fresh linen in his cluttered office sets him on edge and her request has him flummoxed; plus his body roars to end six years of celibacy.

He is fascinated with the odd Pippa. Her intelligence and her factual, rather than emotional, approach to life set her apart from women he knows. The harder he works to expel her from his world, the more she becomes entangled in it. What a hash he makes of things in his determination to save her from ruin!

What she does in return brings a climax to the story that sends the heart rate sky high and the blood pressure spirally up, up, up.

Sarah MacLean mixes the flaws and foibles of London Society with scientific facts of the time and seasons the mix with love scenes that override the unsavory to create a feast of fantastic reading. She creates a villain that is a cunning, conniving adversary that ups the ante to fever pitch. Just when it looks like he has the winning hands an absolutely amazing thing happens and true pandemonium breaks out; Ms. Maclean has the reader right in the middle of the frenzy and fray..

The remarkable secondary characters help keep the story racing along to a wedding that brings its on super surprise. All the little extras of human and animal nature that Ms. MacLean slips in make for rich, emotional reading with “wowing” love scenes being the icing on it all.

One Good Earl Deserves a Lover is beautifully written and keeps the reader’s senses and emotions captivated.
