Where there’s smoke, there’s fire!

Working with the new fire chief, Roman Salazar, is a challenge for Frankie Bettencourt. Everyone in Butterfly Harbor agrees she was the one destined for the top job at the station house! So, should she quit? No way! But she will steer clear of Roman from now on…or at least until his kindness, quick smile and can-do attitude win the town—and possibly Frankie—over for good!

It’s no secret that I enjoy to read books written by Anna J Stewart and I’m pleased to share that this book is no exception. I wish I could say that I’ve read every book in the Butterfly Harbor Stories series but I can only claim to have read book five and then this book, which is book seven. This book can be read as a standalone.

This was a relaxing read at the end of a hard day’s work. A sweet escape to a heartwarming romance, I found Frankie, the heroine, to be the glue that held the cast of characters together. She was the epitome of the girl next door that everyone loved. The town of Butterfly Harbor is a tight knit community with a variety of well-developed characters that are easily relatable. I felt like I was part of the community. I only wish it really did exist.

The hero, Roman, was the newcomer in town that we all had to learn to accept and love. Not that difficult of a task if I say so myself. Together Roman and Frankie made for a fun and entertaining read. I have a soft spot for books that make me laugh, have a happily ever after, and leave me with a book glow. This book does all that and more.

My interest was captured from beginning to end and I really didn’t want to story to end. Fortunately, I can go back and read some of the books I’ve missed to complete the series. If you haven’t read an Anna J. Stewart book yet, I highly recommend you give her a try. There is no better time than now to start and no better book than to start with than The Firefighter’s Thanksgiving Wish.

The hardest part about writing is… by Roger Peppercorn – Guest Blog and Giveaway

The hardest part about writing is…

The hardest part about is more than a few things. The easy part is finding a topic that moves you. I think writers in general don’t struggle much with what to write about. There is a story each of us wants to tell but the hardest thing I think is to find your voice. There are hundreds of thousands of wordsmiths today and finding a voice that is unique to you and that captures the imagination and steadfast interest of the readers are hardest part of writing.

From the earliest of days philosophers and storytellers have found a way to leave lasting impressions that have stood the test of time. From Socrates to Whitman and Harper to Rowling the words they put on the blank page have lasted and inspired generations of storytellers through today and will inspire writers to the end of time. Their voices are as unique as the stories they craft.

To find it you must allow the words to appear on the page and without the noise of the world around you. You will know your own voice when you get out of your own way long enough to let the story come out of you.

I said there are few things and one of the other hard thing to do is knowing when to end the story and when to stop tweaking it. When I wrote my first book I read, deleted, added, moved and changed it so much that I realized at some point that I was one key stroke away from delete all. You always think there is something to add or delete. Put it down, let the story breathe for a bit and the next time you pick it up read it for the pleasure of the story. If you get lost in a story you have written then you’ve done your job. Give it over to the editor and let them help you make it better.

The last hard thing about writing almost anything is your readership or the lack of one. And then there are the comments sections. I have gotten reviews that give me the impression I may just be the next great American novelist and I have gotten reviews that point in an entirely different direction and make me rethink my choses in life.

The point is this not everything you write or create will resonate with an audience. Your voice is in there somewhere just let it come out and when you are through it won’t be perfect but it will be yours and you will have gotten something across the finish line that few people accomplish.

Thank you to Long and Short Reviews for a spot in your guest blog

With the drop of a judge’s gavel, Walt Walker has finally lost everything. The badge and gun he used to carry and the moral certainty of right and wrong, good and evil that used to keep him grounded. Now Walt, sans gun, gets his badges from an Army Navy store. He spends his days in South Florida, working for a boutique insurance firm as their investigator. He spends his nights in dive bars, trying to forget the mess he has made of his life.

Ronald Jacobs always preferred the title Human Resource Manger to Hitman. But now that he’s retired, he can concentrate on living in the shadows as a respectable gentlemen farmer. Far from the reach and pull of his past life.

Their transgressions are behind them but a chance encounter and a failed assassination attempt sets the two of them on a collision course of violence and retribution. Hunted by contract killers, the law, and corporate bag men, they are pursued across the unforgiving adobes and the sweeping vistas of the Mesa Valley in Western Colorado.

Survival means putting their past in front of them and their differences aside, because in this world the only thing that matters is to cast not others on the devil’s side of heaven, lest you be cast in with them.

A little after midnight on a clear and cold morning in March, Jimmy Dix parked his car three miles from the farmhouse. From here it would all be on foot. The sky, dark and overcast, would cover his approach to the farmhouse situated in the adobe desert, fifteen miles from the little town of Loma, CO. His target presumably would be asleep and unaware of his impending death.

Big Max Benson had been clear in his instructions. The job had to be tonight. Jimmy hadn’t bothered to ask why. Fifteen thousand dollars had been more than enough to silence any idle curiosity he may have had. And the promise to convert all the red ink that bore Jimmy’s name in Big Max’s ledger to black had been the clincher. He had driven fifteen hours in a rental car he had picked up in a hotel parking lot just outside of Billings, MT. In the trunk, Big Max had left a cut down 12 gauge shotgun, an AR-15 and a 9 mm pistol. Each weapon had come with more than enough ammo to do the job. Jimmy had brought along his own set of NVGs for the nighttime raid.

He sat in the car, staring out the windshield, thinking about the three mile hike he had in front of him. The car heater was cranked up to high. The dashboard clock read 12:02; the hike would take him about an hour. He thought about the task at hand. After he arrived, he would need probably thirty minutes to scout his final approach plus maybe another fifteen to twenty minutes to get set up. Maybe another five minutes to carry out the job. Jimmy did the math in his head and figured that worst case scenario, he would be back in the car no later than 4 a.m. This would leave him more than enough time to get clear of the area. Jimmy smiled at the thought of coming in under the cover of darkness, killing someone and then leaving under the same veil before any cops showed up.

About the Author: Roger Peppercorn has suffered for the better part of his life from wanderlust and this need to see the other side of the horizon has taken him to all parts of the world. The people and backdrop of his travels have served as the inspiration behind his characters and storytelling.

As a child, his mother taught him to read and write. His father’s collection of Louis Lamour novels provoked the fantastical images in his mind and the romance of the written word. In the seventh grade, his history teacher brought the characters of a bygone era alive. From that point on, Roger began to hone his skills in storytelling. After high school, Roger took a course in creative writing that was taught by a long haired hippy in a Hawaiian shirt.

Roger’s grandmother used to tell hypothetical tales of traveling across the plains in a covered wagon, the woes of having a son sent off to war, and the larger-than-life man she met at Pea Green Hall who later became her husband.

His first two novels “On The Devils Side of Heaven” and “The Sometimes Long Road Home” take place on the western slopes of Colorado, in the sleepy town of Fruita, where he grew up. They center on the strained relationships and sorted histories of three characters – Walt, Ronald and Jessica, and violence that erupts around them.

Roger is married and is a father of four beautiful children. He currently calls South Dakota his home.

That lass does my head in. I don’t know how she can annoy the fuck out of me and turn me on so much I forget my own name at the same time. My body wants to go after her, but my mind is telling me to stay put.

My brothers and I have been on rotation to watch over Erin. Ma and Da left a while ago so Ma could shower in her own home and spend time with the babes. Kasey and Molly need their grandma. All of this is a big adjustment for the family. I think we’re all exhausted.

I can’t say the last time my mum didn’t stay overnight here at the hospital, with my da right by her side. I was happy to sit in while they take some time away. However, now my jaw ticks as I watch the swaying hips of the woman who’s been on my mind for a week.

I need to talk to her. That call went all wrong the other night. I’ll be the first to admit that I’m nothing but awkward when it comes to dating. Still, that woman made it a hell of a lot harder to try to ask her out.

I twist my lips into a frown as I watch her walk away. Trenton walks past her in the hallway, turning his head to watch her go by. I release a growl, feeling possessive and irritated.

“Now, that’s a looker.” He whistles when he enters the room.

“Stay here,” I snap at him.

“Wait, what?” he calls after me, but I’m already in motion.

My long legs eat up the floor as I head in the direction Alicia retreated in. I have her in sight as the elevator arrives. She steps in and the doors go to shut. I get there just in time to stick my foot in the way of them closing.

The lift makes a dinging sound as it opens wide. Alicia looks up from her phone as I step on. Our eyes lock and I close the distance between us. She drops her head down shyly to break the connection. She has to feel the same thing I feel. This energy that’s charging the tight space between us has a pulse.

The elevator chimes and others begin to crowd on, causing us to move closer together. Alicia tries to take a step back, but my hand shoots out. It lands protectively on her waist, drawing her into me to shield her.

I trap a groan between my lips when her soft curves press against me. She still won’t look up at me, but she doesn’t wiggle out of my hold either. She feels so right this close.

I dip my head to whisper in her ear, “We need to talk.”

She lifts her head to look at me, her lush lips are parted, begging me to kiss them. I’m this close to listening. The lift stops again, allowing more passengers onto the car.

Alicia places her hands on my chest as we’re squished more closely. The look in her eyes tells me I’m not alone in this. She indeed feels it too.

When we reach the lobby, the crowd starts to exit. I maneuver her body in front of mine to cover her as I lead her out. She relaxes into my hold on her waist, causing me to have hope that this won’t be a fight.

As soon as we get off the car, my newfound confidence implodes. A stony-faced Kevin is standing outside the elevator. When he turns his eyes to me, I know my talk with Alicia is going to have to wait.

“We need to talk,” Kevin says gruffly.

“I should be going anyway,” Alicia rushes out.

She tries to take off, but I wrap my fingers around her forearm to stop her forward motion. She turns to look back at me. I grind my teeth against the electric current that zaps straight up my arm.

“This isn’t over. We’ll be having that talk,” I say before releasing her.

“Not such a good idea, but it was nice seeing you again. I’ll keep Erin in my prayers,” she replies softly.

One wild and passionate Caribbean night leaves Annelise with amazing memories…but what happens when her vacation fling reappears as a VIP client?

Deserted by her fiancé only three months before their wedding, a devastated Annelise decides to go on their Caribbean honeymoon alone in the hope of thawing the deep freeze of her emotions. Rémy Gaspard is staying at his family’s remote tropical resort to get some work done after a difficult visit with his sister, but instead, he finds himself drawn to the sad young woman he sees from across the beach. When she quite literally falls into his lap, he can’t believe his good fortune.

Their passionate vacation romance is cut short by a troubling accident and they part ways, but neither can stop thinking about the other. When they meet up again in Montreal, seemingly by accident six months later, their attraction is just as strong…or stronger. As they face the challenges of misunderstandings, suspicions and a shadowy menace that won’t leave Rémy’s family alone, one thing becomes clear. Their love remains strong, anywhere and always.

There’s falling in love and then there’s falling on top of, as in tripping over, the embodiment of sexy European wet dreams. Except that Remy is French-Canadian and that’s important to remember.

Annelise is recovering from a shock courtesy of her ‘we want different things’ ex-fiance. Really, who does that? What a jerk! As a reader, I instantly liked Annelise as a sympathetic character but I appreciated that the author didn’t put me through the full grief spectrum. Instead the story opens with her actively making the decision to heal. It didn’t hurt that ‘healing’ came in the form of a hot guy on a deserted beach.

One thing I noticed real quick. Remy’s got moves. Really sexy moves! Their brief time in Mexico was memorable and I was looking forward to when they would run into each other again.

I had in my mind how I thought that would go and surprisingly in a good way, I was wrong. The author throws in some instant intrigue that had me anxious to keep reading. She didn’t disappoint. I won’t go into details but meeting Remy’s sister, hearing about his brothers, there’s so much more story to tell. I for one can’t wait for the next installment.

Reader’s who love to get in on the beginning of great series should get in on this one. Looking at her website, it appears that big brother Pierre’s book is next. Can’t wait!!

This was cute!

Okay, so maybe a little too cute for me, but I did enjoy it.

Steve and Farin have chemistry from the beginning. Neither is looking for a relationship and neither wants a one nighter, so friends it is, until then it really isn’t enough and they both want more. I think what I struggled with was the speed at which things moved once they decided to date. I mean one minute, they are barely kissing, and the next they are banging up against the car! The speed at which the L word was mentioned was a little fast for me, too. But it might not bother other readers.

I did enjoy the supporting cast, though! Steve’s little sister had him pegged early on as to how he felt for Farin. Farin’s brother, Colin, picked up on the electricity, to. I would like to go back and read about Colin and Jordan. They seem like a fun pair!

It’s a good read, but maybe a little too sweet and speedy for me. Other readers might love this fast-paced story. This is the first book by this author and I and liked it enough to try reading Ms. Slayer again.

All’s fair in war…and in love…

Marcus Braddock, former general and newly appointed Duke of Hampton, is back from war. Now, not only is he surrounded by the utterly unbearable ton, he’s mourning the death of his beloved sister, Elise. Marcus believes his sister’s death wasn’t an accident, and he’s determined to learn the truth—starting with Danielle Williams, his sister’s beautiful best friend.

Danielle is keeping deadly secrets of her own. She has dedicated her life to a charity that helps abused women—the same charity Elise was working for the night she died. When Danielle’s work puts her life in danger, Marcus comes to her rescue. But Danielle may not be the one in need of rescuing…

Marcus twirled Dani through a circle so unexpectedly that she glanced up at him, startled by the movement.

“Elise was too good of a horsewoman to be thrown from her mare. Certainly not on a morning trot through the park. Especially when the groom said she didn’t go out on horseback at all that morning.” His gaze fixed on hers with a hardness that told her he’d brook no dissembling. “So let’s start over with the truth, shall we?”

“I did tell you the truth! I told you everything that the guards…” As her voice faded, the confusion on her beautiful face melted into anguish.

Her reaction pierced him. She certainly wasn’t pretending the emotions behind that. Not even an actress at the Theatre Royal would have been good enough to fake such raw pain and sorrow.
Fresh guilt assaulted him. Good God, did she truly not know? Had it never occurred to her that Elise’s death hadn’t happened at all the way she’d claimed?

He searched her face for answers. “You didn’t know that she’d left Charlton Place at night, alone, to meet a man?”

“No. Or I would have stopped her.”

Looking at her now, hearing the resolve in her voice, that he very much believed. “And John Porter?”

“I don’t know who he is.”

A bitter taste rose on his tongue. “Was he her lover?”

“No! Elise would never…”

Her cheeks flushed, and she glanced away in embarrassment. Danielle might have blossomed into a woman while he’d been away, but her reluctance to put to words that his sister had taken a lover assured him that she was still innocent. He had no idea why he should care, but he thanked God that some things hadn’t changed.

“Why else would a widow meet up alone with a man at night?”

“Not for that.” Irritation sparked in her eyes that he would assume that of his sister. Despite himself, a warmth blossomed in his chest at her defense of Elise’s reputation. “Not her.”

His fingers tightened around hers as he continued to waltz her around the room. “Are you certain she wasn’t planning to elope?”

She gaped at him, thunderstruck. “What on earth makes you think that?”

“In his note, Porter wrote that everything was set for their vanishing that night.”

She blanched and missed a step. If his arms weren’t around her, she would have stumbled again. She rasped out hoarsely as she hurried back into step with him, “A vanishing?”

The way she repeated that, her haunted expression—Good God. Instantly, his blood froze. “You know more than you’re telling.”

She gave a fierce shake of her head. “I didn’t know about any of this!”

“Did she die on the way to meet him or coming back?” His gaze narrowed, watching her closely as he dared to finally put voice to his fears. “Or did he murder her?”

She gasped, the strangled sound so pained that he flinched. “Murder?” The word came as barely any sound at all on her lips, and she began to tremble, so hard that she nearly shuddered in his arms. “Oh, God…Elise…”

“So I’ll ask again.” He twirled her through a tight circle, one meant to keep her off-balance. “Who is John Porter?”

“I don’t know.”

“What did he mean by their vanishing?”

She fiercely shook her head. “I don’t—”

“And Scepter?”

At that, she halted right there in his arms, smack in the middle of the dance floor, bringing him to a stop with her. For one fleeting heartbeat, he saw fear grip her face, the same fear he’d seen on every man under his command the first time they’d charged into battle.

Then it was gone, and in its place came anger.

“How dare you?” Outrage filled her voice. “This is why you asked me to waltz? Not as an old friend of the family, not even to commiserate together in our grief—this dance was nothing but the battle strategy of a war-hardened general, to keep me from fleeing while you interrogated me!”

“My sister was murdered, and I’m damned well going to find out why.” His own anger flared in response, yet he was aware of the crowded dance floor around them and kept his face carefully inscrutable. “John Porter warned Elise to stay away from Scepter.” He searched her face for answers. “Tell me what you know about them. What is it? Where can I find the people running it?”

“I don’t know.” The icy look she gave him was one of absolute obstinacy. “And for your sake, General,” she said, her eyes practically glowing, “I wouldn’t tell you even if I did.”

He clenched his jaw. “I need to know what you’re hiding about—”

“Stop!” she ordered hoarsely, pushing herself free of his arms. “Please. Just stop.”

As the other couples continued to dance on around them, the attention of the room fell upon them, and everyone craned their necks to see what was wrong. But Marcus didn’t care that whispers went up at the scene they were making or that Claudia now stood in the doorway, watching them curiously. Danielle Williams knew more than she was admitting. Far more. He wouldn’t stop pressing until he had the entire truth and brought to justice the man responsible.

The waltz ended, and the last notes died with a flourish. When she stepped back, he had no choice except to let her go.

But this conversation was far from over.

Aware of the attention of the crowd still upon them and clearly wanting to lessen the spectacle they were making of themselves, she held out her hand and dropped into a curtsy as if nothing were wrong.

“Your sister was a good woman who dedicated her life to helping those in need,” she said between deep inhalations as she gathered herself enough to put a smile onto her face for the crowd around them. “Keep that memory, and let the rest go. I beg you.”

He took her hand and bowed over it, attempting to appear as if they were simply finishing the waltz. He murmured against her fingers, “I have no intention of letting this go.”

False Memory by Meli Raine – FREE BOOK

Long and Short Reviews welcomes Meli Raine who is offering FREE False Memory, the first book in her False Trilogy through the month of February.

She’s faking her amnesia to fool a very real killer.

It all started with the bereavement flowers with my name on them.

Not the best way to wake up, right? I work in a flower shop. I know a funeral arrangement when I see one.

I know a killer when I see one, too. And one is standing in my hospital room right now, straight behind the man who saved my life.

I can’t tell anyone the truth, because that’s the fastest way to really die. So I do the next best thing. I “lose” my memory.

I fake my amnesia.

Pretending not to remember a brutal attempted murder has its perks. The killer is backing down, spending less time around me, loosening the noose.

The less I claim to recall, the more my rescuer, Duff, works to help me “remember.” I hate lying to him.

But he doesn’t understand that my memory is dangerous. To me. And to him.

Fooling everyone isn’t easy. It’s the hardest thing I’ve ever done.

Except it’s starting to look like I’ve been fooling myself.

In more ways than one.

The False Trilogy includes False Hope and False Start.

I open my eyes. It’s light.

“Can you believe it, Lily?” a woman says to me. “It looks like Bosworth is going to win! When people ask you who the president is, you’re going to have to remember the new one. President Harwell Bosworth. Of course, we won’t know for sure until late to-night, but I’ll keep you posted. I’ll keep you posted, sweetie,” she says as she adjusts the IV in my right arm, the one that burns whenever they start a new bag of medicine.

“When the doctor asks you who the president is, you’ll have the right answer. I know you will. I don’t care how long you’ve been like this. The doctors are wrong. Plenty of people have come out of this after more than a year. I know you’re going to be one of them. My Lily is a fighter.”

She squeezes my hand.

I almost squeeze back. Almost. So close.

I look to the left. A dark man. No–dark clothes. Dark hair. Pale skin peeking out under it all. Someone has something on my head and tape pulls at the corner of my eye. Blinking is harder. It hurts, like someone weakened the tender skin under my eyes. I close my eyes.

Open them.

“Hey there, Lily,” a nurse says. I try to look over at her but can’t. Eyes hurt.

Close eyes.

Open them.

The man.

Oh, God, I know that man.

As she steps into Grayson’s privileged Chicago world, will his matchmaking mother and vengeful ex destroy her dreams? Or will her fake fiancé make those dreams a reality?

Second best to the memory of a ghost. The spare that was never meant to be the heir and that was just fine with Grayson Chandler. He was a successful tech giant but there was something missing in his life. It took a city wide blackout to shed some light on just what or who he needed to bring both a dose of reality and off the charts chemistry to his life.

Nadia’s life in Chicago consisted of supporting her brother, avoiding becoming her mother and being on call to her boss who had no problem with sending her on crazy errands afterhours. Her life would forever be changed by a chance encounter with a gorgeous man who wouldn’t remember her tomorrow. Funny thing about chance, it can go either way.

Blame it on the Billionaire is book 3 in the Blackout Billionaires series. Grayson and Nadia don’t run in the same circles and that fact is brought out several times in the book. The fact that Nadia isn’t like the women who are frequently thrust at Grayson, women who socially acceptable to his parents, is part of her appeal. Her self confidence and sassy kissable mouth are high on the list as well.

Nadia and Gray had instant chemistry but I thought it was interesting that he was so determined to try and not let it get beyond the physical. The physical was totally hot and it was fun to watch them fight to not let it get out of control. It got out of control several times, much to my pleasure and their chagrin.

Ms. Simone paints Nadia’s story, her background and reason for not trusting easy, in very clear and descriptive terms. I could picture the young girl that she was, proud and determined to fight for her brother and herself. She’s a character that was easy cheer for but I wasn’t sure how Gray could overcome her past to make her part of his future. An uphill battle for sure.

The story has a happy ending and wraps up the series nicely. I liked how Ms. Simone worked out the issues. It felt legit, not just thrown together. Readers who love the world of big money and hot men will love Nadia and Gray’s story.

Garrett, her close childhood friend and FBI agent assigned to the human trafficking task force, gave his heart to her years ago and wants no other woman.

Does he have a second chance or has her ex stolen her from him again?

After a bad break-up, Madelyn is broke and devastated when her mother passes away. An old childhood friend, FBI agent Garrett Fisher offers her to drive her home and the two reconnect on the drive. When danger is lurking in their small town, can they work together to remain safe?

I found this to be a romantic and interesting short story. Maddy and Garrett had known each other most of their lives, having grown up in a small town, but after Maddy a bad relationship she’d moved into the big city and moved on with her life. Her friendship with Garrett continued which helped make their relationship deepening from friends to lovers realistic and easier in the short length of the story. I feel readers looking for a quick romance story will find this satisfies – as a lot of the focus is on Maddy and Garrett and the progress of their relationship. Had the story been longer I absolutely would have wanted more depth and details of Garrett’s work as an FBI agent and the cases and difficulties he must deal with every day, but I can understand how if the author had done this here the romance side to the story would have been cut short and suffered.

The mystery plot was fast paced and I enjoyed the conflict and suspense it added to the story. I felt Maddy’s calmness in the initial phase of the tension was a little unrealistic given the situation she found herself in and the numerous ways things could have gone very bad very quickly, but again admit that the short length of the story didn’t lend itself to the giving Maddy the time to have a melt-down. I thought the resolution clicked into place a little too easily and I was surprised at how quickly Maddy and Garrett consummated their relationship after her ordeal, but overall the tenseness of the plot and the happiness of the romance growing between Maddy and Garrett had the story feeling balanced and interesting to me.

Throw logic out the door and disconnect your brain, sit back with a glass of wine and this can be one of those good, short stories where you just enjoy a bit of an escape from reality for a while. With a good plot and lovely romance there’s plenty to enjoy about this story.
