There’s only one catch — he’s her bodyguard and the rules state she can’t date the staff.

But rules are meant to be broken…

Anissa had been in lust with Kam forever, but he was her bodyguard and the consummate professional. Deciding she’s waited long enough, Annissa hatches a plan to seduce Kam – only to discover the handsome man feels exactly the same as her.

While in many ways this story follows the regular “bodyguard falls for his client” style of plot I found much of the emotional side of Kam and Anissa’s romance to be refreshingly different – more of a teacher and student style of intimacy. I admit I found the misunderstanding between Kam and Anissa mid-way through the story a bit of a cliché and I don’t really understand why Kam didn’t try to explain himself but rather just left. It felt a bit silly to me that he and Anissa discussed so many other delicate and hurtful things openly (such as her father paying other men to pretend to be her boyfriends) but Kam couldn’t explain to Anissa why he’d contracted on for more money when there had been a sensible and logical reason behind it. It felt a little to me just like stringing out the conflict aspect of the plot which (to my mind) wasn’t necessary.

I found this story to be more tender than I was expecting. Anissa had been completely sheltered all her life – all-girl high schools, controlled “dates” with only approved men and so forth. At twenty one she’s determined to try and spread her wings a little and carve out a semblance of her own life. I was pleased when it became clear very early on that Kam was just as interested in Anissa as she him, but also that Kam’s protective instincts were in full force. He wasn’t prepared to back down when Anissa’s safety – or heart – were in question and Kam was even prepared to be professionally reprimanded for following his emotional instincts.

I enjoyed Kam and Anissa’s characters and found much of their romance sweet, emotional and interesting. Watching Anissa take charge of her life and really go after what she wanted was lovely and seeing the strength of love she and Kam shared was uplifting. Overall I found this to be a sweet and emotional read.

Stories of Love Are Sticky
By Rachel Dacus

Stories of love stick with us, draw us in easily. They’re often the most memorable stories, the ones we carry around with a glow of happiness—unless they were tragic stories, and then we keep the tender feelings of that. Think of your favorite romance or love story. It’s not hard to bring to mind, is it?

Love in all its forms is the epitome of relationships working as well as they can, given that humans are imperfect. Love stories are sticky, I think, because they’re basic to human nature. It’s the heat in a connection that matters most and indicates depth of feeling.

Shakespeare said, “Love looks not with the eyes, but with the mind, and therefore is wing’d cupid painted blind.” Love sees the Beloved’s interior, rather than simply the exterior (though gorgeous exteriors don’t detract!). In Romeo and Juliet, one of my favorite love stories, Juliet declares: “My bounty is as boundless as the sea, my love as deep; the more I give to thee the more I have, for both are infinite.”

In devising the story I wanted to tell in The Renaissance Club, depth of feeling seemed to me central. Gianlorenzo Bernini was an artist of great feeling, and his sculptures are some of the most passionate and emotional works of art ever made. I posed myself the question: what if I could go back in time and meet Bernini? What would I ask such an amazing genius and man of feeling? I’d want to know more about how he lived so creatively and poured so much life and emotion into his works.

And meeting him, would I feel drawn to them in more than artistic ways? Well, of course! That was the spark of idea for the story. And how May Gold was born as my main character—an art historian with an undercurrent of passion and a creative soul, and with lots of questions for the artist she most admires.

Being lucky enough to slip through a fold in time and meet the living, breathing genius she admires, May is swept into a storm of emotion, but feelings aren’t always easy to live with, and they complicate life. As does a gulf of centuries between you and your beloved! And thereby hangs a tale … the tale of The Renaissance Club.

Would you give up everything, even the time in which you live, to be with your soul mate? That’s what young art historian and teacher May Gold must decide when she slips through time’s folds to meet the man of her dreams and the subject of her master’s thesis — fiery 17th century genius artist Gianlorenzo Bernini.

In her fantasies May is in his arms, the wildly adored partner of the man who steered Renaissance art into the Baroque. In reality, she has just landed in Rome with her stodgy boyfriend and teaching colleagues for a tour of Italy. She yearns to unleash her passion and creative spirit.

When the floor under the gilded dome of St Peter’s basilica rocks under her feet, she finds herself in the year 1624, staring straight into Bernini’s eyes. Their immediate and powerful attraction grows every time she meets him during the tour. Passion blossoms, but history says they have no future. Can May thread her way through time, and will she take a perilous risk to begin a magical, exciting new life?

This time travel romance is perfect for lovers of Italy, art, and love stories.

He lowered the rod and at last, smiled. Historians had written that his smile could charm anyone, but he had never been painted smiling. What a shame.

“Why are you, a woman, studying my art?” His voice wasn’t deep but it was vibrant, with an Italian lilt. “Women only study languages, lute playing, babies, and needle work.”

“I’m a different kind of woman.” She remembered what a range of women he had known, from models to noblemen’s wives. In his era, women’s decent occupations could be listed in five lines.

“I do not wish to be rude, but because of your sex you cannot study art.”

“I’m an exception.” She enjoyed the way that startled him.

“What are you called?” he demanded.

“My name is May Gold.”

He bowed. “Signorina May Gold, Cavaliere Bernini is at your service! Your golden skin makes me think you are perhaps from Egypt, where women aren’t properly schooled in manners.”

She smiled at what he thought would be an insult. “I’m half Italian and half Jewish. And I am a student of your work, despite my sex.”

“How can that be?”

His superior certainty made the sarcasm pinch, but she knew he couldn’t easily understand. She might as well tell him what he would find unbelievable. “I’m a historian studying Baroque art, and you’re the focus of my study.”

He laughed loudly. “A woman historian? Impossible! And I know nothing of your Baroque. I am merely—” he bowed insincerely “—a genius of sculpture and architecture.”

About the Author: Rachel Dacus is a poet, essayist, and novelist who writes about love and relationships, with a touch of the supernatural. Love and history are the themes of her debut novel, The Renaissance Club, a tale of romance between a young art historian and her hero, the fiery 17th century Italian sculptor Gianlorenzo Bernini. Praise for her novel — “enchanting, rich, and romantic” — describes the kinds of love and adventure stories Rachel enjoys, preferably set in exotic places. She has traveled to Italy and India and plans to expand her journeys beyond countries that start with the letter “I”.

She’s the daughter of a bipolar rocket engineer who worked on missiles during the race-to-space 1950’s. He was also an accomplished painter.

Her interest in Italy was ignited by a course in Renaissance art history that culminated in tour of northern Italy. She’s been hooked on Italy ever since. Her essay on Italy, motherhood, and infertility was anthologized in Italy, a Love Story: Women Write About the Italian Experience.

Dacus shows off her versatility in four poetry collections. Her newest is Arabesque. Three other collections are: Gods of Water and Air, Femme au Chapeau, and Earth Lessons. She raises funds for arts, human service, and healthcare organizations and takes walks with her way-too-smart Silky Terrier.

You Had Me at Cowboy by Jennie Marts – Spotlight and Giveaway

Long and Short Reviews welcomes Jennie Marts who is celebrating the upcoming release of You Had Me at Cowboy. Enter the Rafflecopter at the end of the post for a chance to win a copy of the book.

This cowboy is falling hard.

Mason James is the responsible one who stayed behind to run the ranch while his brother, Rock, took off to play professional hockey. Women have used him before to get to his brother—and Mason intends never to get burned again. But after he meets quirky Tessa Kane at his brother’s wedding, Mason discovers he’s ready to take a chance on love.

Tessa Kane is a reporter on the verge of losing a job she desperately needs—unless she’s clever enough to snag a story on the famous Rockford James. But when she falls for her subject’s brother, she’s caught between a rock and a hard-muscled cowboy. What will happen when Mason finds out who she really is?

Enjoy an Excerpt

Tessa slipped into the back door of the lodge, clutching the clean shirt to her waist. She spied the ladies’ room door at the end of the hall and hurried toward it, but the door wouldn’t budge.

Dang it.

She waited a few seconds, then checked the other doors in the hallway. The first one was locked, but the second opened into an odd combination coat closet and storeroom, and she slipped inside. One half of the small room was carpeted and had a rod of hangers along part of the wall, while the other side was tiled and had a tall shelf that held assorted books and cleaning supplies.

The room didn’t have a lock, but it would work in a pinch, and she wouldn’t need long to change.

She quickly unbuttoned the stained silk blouse and let it fall to the floor, her mind preoccupied with how she was going to get into the party without Mick. This wasn’t how her day was supposed to go—especially the part about locking her keys in the car—but after a quick round of cussing, followed by a swift bout of self-pity, she’d rallied, giving herself the kind of pep talk she imagined Mimi would have offered.

This might not have been the original plan for the day, but she was improvising and moving on to plan B.

Shoving her arms into the sleeves, she noticed the shirt felt odd but didn’t realize what the problem was until she tried to pull the lapels together. What the heck?

She pulled at the sides again and felt the material stretch across her back.

No. I couldn’t have.

She looked closer at the shirt, and her shoulders fell.

I did. She’d grabbed the wrong white shirt from the dryer. Instead of removing her roomy, stretch-cotton shirt, she’d taken her grandmother’s blouse. Her petite five-foot-nothing grandmother.

Well, shit. She wanted to weep as she looked down and realized there was no way she was squeezing her ample chest into that blouse.

Plan B ruined by a double-D cup!

Dammit.

Please fit, she prayed as she tried again, squashing her chest and working to squeeze the small button into the opposite hole. She cursed the extra weight she’d put on, knowing this wasn’t the first time lately she’d tried to squeeze into apparel that was just a smidge too small.

She let out a tiny shriek as the door to the utility closet suddenly opened, then froze as she took in the ridiculously handsome cowboy who filled its frame. The hinges of his chiseled jaw must’ve been broken because his mouth dropped open, and his eyes went wide at the sight of her.

Par for the course of her day, the button on her shirt picked that horribly inopportune moment to work free, and her shirt popped open like a can of biscuits.

“Oh dang. Sorry,” the cowboy muttered, his eyes widening further as his gaze dropped to the black lacy bra for just a moment before he turned his back and shimmied out of his suit jacket. He passed it back to her. “You all right there, miss?”

No, she was not all right. She was definitely not all right.

She wanted to cry and stamp her feet and run home to Mimi’s house to curl up on her grandmother’s outdated chintz sofa and stuff her face with marshmallow cookies.

But that wasn’t an option because Mimi’s cupboards were bare, and she may not have her house—or the chintz sofa—for much longer. Tess held back a sigh as she slid her arms into the sleeves of the jacket, careful not to mess up the red rose pinned to the lapel.

It was time to admit defeat. To give up on this stupid plan and try to come up with another way to raise the money. She wasn’t cut out for this kind of stress. Maybe she should rethink Mimi’s spiked lemonade-stand idea or see if she could get a job as a waitress.

“I’m fine. Mostly. Except that a bird pooped on my shirt, and the one I was trying to change into must have shrunk in the dryer.” She couldn’t believe she’d just blurted out the bird-turd fiasco, and she couldn’t bring herself to admit the added stupid mistake of grabbing the wrong blouse. “I just need a minute.”

“I’ll leave you to it then,” he answered, a grin tugging at the corners of his lips as he backed away from the door.
She pulled one side of the coat over the other, thankful the suit jacket covered her exposed chest.

Hmmm. She skimmed the satiny petals of the rose. Boutonnieres were typically reserved for the bridal party. This guy must be one of the groomsmen.

“Wait,” she called as the cute cowboy started to walk away.

Plan B had just turned into plan C.

Top Ten Tuesday: Thanksgiving Cookbooks

Hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl

Lately I’ve been thinking about all of the work that goes into creating a delicious Thanksgiving feast. Cooking is a skill, especially when it comes to making multiple dishes using ingredients that might not be so commonly used the rest of the year by the average person.

I was lucky enough to grow up in a family that taught basic cooking skills, but not everyone has this advantage in life. Thank goodness for cookbooks and recipes written by more experienced cooks that can fill in the gaps there for anyone who wants to make the perfect Thanksgiving meal.

Today I’m sharing ten such cookbooks. If you know of any others that are also a good resource, let us know in the common section below.

1. The Sioux Chef’s Indigenous Kitchen by Sean Sherman and Beth Dooley.

Look at just a few of the recipes included in this collection: cedar braised bison, griddled wild rice cakes, amaranth crackers with smoked white bean paste, three sisters salad, deviled duck eggs, smoked turkey soup, dried meats, roasted corn sorbet, and hazelnut–maple bites.

My mouth is watering already. They all sound amazing.

2. Vegetarian Times Complete Thanksgiving Cookbook by the Editors of Vegetarian Times .

I enjoy the challenge of creating a delicious and filling holiday meal that can be eaten by a group of people who sometimes have wildly different dietary needs. This includes friends and relatives who don’t eat meat. With a few tweaks, anyone can eat their fill at my dinner table. I’m proud of that fact.

3. Betty Crocker Complete Thanksgiving Cookbook: All You Need to Cook a Foolproof Dinner by the Editors of Betty Crocker .

This would be an excellent place to start for anyone who has never cooked Thanksgiving dinner before.

4. Taste of Autumn Cookbook by Gooseberry Patch.

There is a recipe in this book for herb roasted turkey that I can’t wait to try. This is also something I’d use to test out recipes ahead of time to see if I liked them enough to include them in the official Thanksgiving lineup.

5. Where People Feast: An Indigenous People’s Cookbook by Dolly Watts and Annie Watts.

Seafood isn’t something I’ve had at any holiday dinner, but the recipes for it in this cookbook sound incredible. I might have to replace the traditional turkey with fish or mussels one day.

This plant low cost viagra is regarded as a safe way to increase muscle mass and as an adaptogen-rich drink, it can be just what’s needed to best support memory, focus, attention, athletic performance, and healthy aging. Other than that, there is no risk involved and cialis prescription online icks.org it can actually benefit your health in addition to adding flavor to your meals. This rehabilitation process restores a sense of self-worth and ability to viagra generic sale tackle life. Hence, it has been the most popular in this globe to cure men’s erection problem. viagra in großbritannien

6. Southern Holiday Feast: Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year’s, Easter & More! by S.L. Watson.

Southern food is delicious at any time of the year, so of course I’d want to see what they come up with on special occasions, too.

7. Diabetic Holiday Recipes by Publications International.

Once again, I love the idea of making small changes to the traditional spread in order to make sure that everyone will be able to enjoy it.

8. Make It Ahead: A Barefoot Contessa Cookbook by Ina Garten.

My kitchen has a limited amount of counter space, no dishwasher, and a small oven, so I make as much food ahead of time as possible during special occassions. It is so much easier to spread the cooking out over a couple of days as opposed to finding the room to make everything at once and washing a small mountain of dishes afterwards.

9. Pies and Tarts: for All Seasons by Annie Rigg and Nassima Rothacker.

There is never such a thing as too much pie. The nice thing about this dessert is that it generally keeps well if you’re too full to have a slice immediately after the main meal. Of course, my stomach always thinks it has enough room left for pie no matter what else I’ve eaten.

10. Edible Wild Plants: A Naturalist’s Look at the Wild Food Plants of North America by Oliver Perry Medsger.

As you might have already guessed, I enjoy eating locally grown food when possible. I don’t know enough about safely identifying wild plants to eat them on other than rare occasions, but I am fascinated by the idea of wandering into the woods to gather one’s dinner.

Happy Thanksgiving to all of our American readers from everyone here at Long and Short Reviews!

Wanting to know more about her gifts, Dani decides to answer a World Security League call for psychics to help in the capture of the world’s most wanted criminals. Their connection is so incredible that the WSL agents testing them promise to recommend that they work together.

To make her parents happy, Dani finishes her current semester of college before heading to Rutledge. Ren, on the other hand, starts there immediately. They’ll talk face-to-face when she finally gets to The Rutledge Institute, herself. But when she gets there, Ren is nowhere to be found. She finds out that he’s working undercover and seems to have lost contact not just with her, but with everyone.

Being a psychic isn’t always as easy as it might seem.

The physical descriptions of the characters were right on point. I appreciated how much effort the narrator spent describing what everyone looked like. Each character had such a unique style and physical appearance that I figured out how to tell them all apart very quickly. This is something I always appreciate when I jump into a new series.

I would have liked to see more time spent on character development, especially when it came to Dani. The number of characters was perfect for a short story of this length, but I didn’t feel like I got to know any of them well even if they were a protagonist. Their personalities weren’t described in a lot of detail, and they didn’t seem to grow or change much as a result of all of the unusual things they experienced.

Ms. Palmer did a great job balancing out the fantasy and romantic elements of the plot. It would be tricky for me to decide which of these labels to use first, and that’s a good problem to have with tales that are written in more than one genre. I always enjoy it when authors are willing to blend things together like this. Not only can it make the final product appeal to a much wider audience, it’s fun to see what tropes from each genre they decide to use and how they mix it all together.

This book is the fifth in a series, but it can be read on its own or out of order. I hadn’t read any of the previous instalments, and I had no trouble jumping into this world right away.

I’d recommend Beating Heart to fans of the fantasy and romance genres alike.

Life for comic book store owner Alex Martin usually runs to the mundane. Sure, he has a regular influx of geeks and freaks, but for the most part, it’s a familiar weird. That all changes when he opens up Planet X Comics one morning and finds a corpse in the middle of his shop.

When Detective James Castillo is called in to investigate, Alex is torn between wanting to climb the man like a tree and giving him a wide berth. Luckily for Alex, the handsome detective is just as interested in him—as a suspect in the murder.

Alex was understandably upset when he returned to his comic book store only to find a dead body lying in the middle of the floor. Detective James Castillo might be a police officer, but he’s also the sort of deliciously off-limits type of man Alex usually lusts after from afar and never approaches. Can the two men figure out their attraction to each other – and what happened to the dead man in the comic book store?

I found this to be a fun and lighthearted short story. Alex and James are interesting and good characters that I liked. The plotline is a little crazy (in a good sense) and my only real complaint is that the vast majority of the police work and solving the crime was conducted completely off-screen. I understand that the author had a limited amount of space in the short length of this story and I sympathise with the fact the relationship building between Alex and James needed to take higher priority than solving the crime. But I have to be honest, I felt rather short-changed that we jumped from one scene where James and Alex are taking witness statements and discussing the dead body and the next scene is James explaining to Alex how he’s solved the crime and everything is all laid out. There was no chance for me as a reader to discover who the dead person was, to think or listen about motives etc – we literally jumped from discovering the body to being told how and why he was murdered. It made most of that aspect of the plot feel very much like a red herring or afterthought.

The romance between Alex and James, thankfully, was not given short shrift though. I enjoyed watching the two men learn about each other and hunger for each other (their first official date was funny and I actually laughed aloud reading it). The sex was hot and while it was a brief scene this is a very short story and I could totally forgive the quickness of it when so many other things were happening at the same time.

Fun and light this is a great short story. While it’s part of a series I personally feel that it stands completely alone – the characters are all independent and there’s no reference of previous stories. I enjoyed the small hints of geekiness and comic-book fandoms and felt both Alex and James’ characters were vibrant and interesting. With a bit of sex, a dash of laughter and the plot of a dead body to brighten things up this was a lovely story I thoroughly enjoyed.

When their mother unexpectedly dies, the three sisters go home for the reading of the will. The oldest takes the house, the middle one takes the jewels and the youngest one ends up with the cat. The fascinating part about it is that it’s lilac in color…

This is a charming romance with a paranormal cat who can talk and who really is lilac colored. It can even wear high heels. I really liked the way the author made it sound believable (even if far-fetched) and how they wound the romance around the cat’s influence. Fifi makes a pretty good matchmaker and she even manages to get Caitlin a business deal.

The pace is fast enough to keep your interest and the romance fluctuates. The man is extremely good looking and knows it, has lots of money, and doesn’t often sleep alone. Caitlin almost got raped as a child and is still a virgin. She also repairs clothes for a living. Could two people be more different?

The best part is the fashion show where Caitlin is showing off her designs and his former girlfriend is modelling them. As you can imagine, there’s a conflict.

With an outspoken cat who says what she thinks, romance in the air and plenty of interesting conversations, the author keeps you reading and smiling until the end.

The interesting premise is enjoyable, the tale is well written and love is in the air. As you read, you wait to see if they can overcome their differences…Recommended.

“The Loud Table” by Jonathan Carroll is an sf-fantasy about four elderly men who regularly hang out. One of the men is worried that he’s getting Alzheimer’s, but the truth might be even more discomforting.

The result is a harder and a more frequent generic soft cialis erection. Sometimes the wife and children’s health seems more viagra cheap prescription important to the eyes. Not as many constituencies could be prescription du viagra served by the smaller package to be divided between 11 projects. So, how to lead a viagra india prices normal sex life despite suffering from ED. Few things are more frightening than losing memories.

The plot twists in this story were well done. Based on the blurb, I knew something out of the ordinary was going to be happening to one of the characters, but I never would have guessed what was truly bothering him. There was so much creativity included in the author’s descriptions of what was bothering this character and why his doctor’s diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease might not have been as accurate as he originally thought.

I often found myself mixing up the four main characters. While I expected them to have a lot in common due to their similar ages, interests, and personalities, they shared so many similarities that I couldn’t keep everyone straight. Over and over again I’d misremember a detail from one of their lives as something that happened to someone else instead. It would have been helpful to have more context clues about who was who. Even something as simple as giving one of them an unusual hobby or describing him as much more or less outgoing than his friends would have gone a long way in helping me keep them separate in my mind.

With that being said, the friendships between all four characters felt incredibly genuine. Despite their occasionally snarky comments to one another, I caught a strong sense of how much they cared about each other. They’d known each other for so many years that they could often predict what their friends were going to say and do ahead of time. Little details like this showed the audience the result of such long friendships without needing any of the characters to say much out loud about their feelings at all. This was the perfect way to describe four men who probably wouldn’t have been comfortable talking about their emotions in such a deep way, too.

I’d especially recommend The Loud Table to anyone who has ever come down with strange symptoms that were hard to pin down to one cause.

The Discreet Retrieval Agency is doing a brisk holiday business of retrieving lost parcels, grandmas, and stolen wreaths. But with their main squeezes Ralph and Jimmy once more on the back burner, both Lola and Berta pine for a holiday out of New York City. So when they receive a mysterious Christmas card requesting that they retrieve an antique ring at a family gathering in Maple Hill, Vermont, they jump at the chance. Sure, the card is signed Anonymous and it’s vaguely threatening, but it’s Vermont.

In Maple Hill, several estranged members of the wealthy Goddard family gather. And no sooner do Lola and Berta recover the ring—from Great-Aunt Cressida Goddard’s arthritic finger—than Mrs. Goddard goes toes-up, poisoned by her Negroni cocktail on ice. When the police arrive, Lola and Berta are caught-red-handed with the ring, and it becomes clear that they were in fact hired not for their cracker-jack retrieving abilities, but to be scapegoats for murder.

With no choice but to unmask the killer or be thrown in the slammer, Lola and Berta’s investigations lead them deep into the secrets of Maple Hill. In a breathless pursuit along a snowy ridge, with a lovelorn Norwegian ski instructor and country bumpkin hooch smugglers hot on their heels, Lola and Berta must find out once and for all who’s nice…and who’s naughty.

The circumstances, I do realize, were ghastly. A chunk was missing from the molasses layer cake on the kitchen table. A corpse lay, probably still warmish, out on the living room carpet. And I was aware that, having been caught in the act of removing a ruby ring from an elderly lady’s finger, my detecting partner, Berta Lundgren, and I looked as guilty as masked bandits in Tiffany’s.

The policeman, who had announced himself as Sergeant Peletier, stood over the kitchen table, wearing an Oho, what have we here? expression. “You’re the uninvited guests, I reckon,” he said. “Mrs. Lundgren and Mrs. Woodby?”

“We were invited,” Berta said coldly.

“That’s not what I was told,” Peletier said. He surveyed drunken Aunt Daphne, the ring, and the cake. “Having a bit of dessert with a side of jewel thieving, I see. Mighty funny thing to do right after your hostess has expired.”

“Aghamee do eshplain,” I said.

“I beg your pardon?” Peletier said.

I swallowed cake. “Allow me to explain,” I repeated.

This wasn’t the plan. The plan had been to retrieve the ring, pop it in the breadbox, slink out of the house, and skip town on the next train out.

“Yes,” Peletier said. “Please explain. Mrs. Goddard lies dead in the other room, and you’re here in the kitchen shimmying a ring off Mrs. Lyle’s finger?”

At the mention of her name, Aunt Daphne raised her champagne glass. “Cheers,” she crowed.

“I will explain,” Berta butted in. She was a rosy, gray-bunned lady of sixty-odd years who spoke with a faint Swedish accent and resembled a garden gnome. “What you see before you is a tried-and-true method for removing stuck rings from fingers—fingers, you understand, that have . . . expanded.”

We all regarded Aunt Daphne’s fingers, which, short and plump and swollen, resembled a litter of Dachshund puppies. The too-small ring had been maneuvered to just below the knuckle with Berta’s trick of looping embroidery thread under the ring, winding the thread tightly around the finger, and then unwinding the thread from the bottom. With each loop that was unwound, the ring edged up another millimeter. The downside was that it looked rather painful. However, Aunt Daphne, drinking champagne and shoveling cake with her free hand, had yet to complain. There really are no better painkillers than cake and booze.

“My mother always used butter to remove stuck rings,” Peletier said.

“A pound of butter wouldn’t get this thing off me,” Aunt Daphne said. “Believe me, I’ve tried it! This darned thing’s been stuck on my finger since the summer of 1919.”

“When you stole it,” I prompted.

“Stole it?” Aunt Daphne snickered, and with her free hand she lifted the glass of champagne to her lips and polished it off. “I never said that!”
