Stately Pleasures by Lucy Felthouse – Spotlight

Long and Short Reviews welcomes Lucy Felthouse who is celebrating the recent release of Stately Pleasures. For those of you who love BDSM ménage with a curvy heroine, Stately Pleasures ticks all the boxes! This popular novel has been relaunched with a brand-new cover and updated content.

There are worse things a girl can do to get a boost up the career ladder.

Alice Brown has just landed her dream job as property manager at Davenport Manor, a British stately home. It’s only a nine-month contract to cover maternity leave, but it will provide her with the vital experience she needs to progress in her chosen career.

However, her dream job soon threatens to become a nightmare when she discovers her boss, Jeremy Davenport, in a compromising position. Her shock is exacerbated when Jeremy, far from being embarrassed or apologetic about what happened, manipulates the situation until somehow, she’s the one in the wrong. He and his best friend, Ethan Hayes, the head of security at Davenport Manor, give her an ultimatum. Faced with the possibility of losing her job and endangering her future prospects, Alice reluctantly agrees to their indecent proposal.

When the dust settles, Alice comes to the conclusion that playing their kinky games isn’t such a bad thing, after all. But what happens when she thinks she’s falling for both men?

Alice took a deep breath, in through her nose, and out through her mouth. Repeated the process once more. Then, realising she could sit there all day doing it and not feel any calmer, she forced herself to step out of the car and close and lock the door.

She bent to peer into the wing mirror of the vehicle and checked her hair and make-up. Satisfied, she straightened, then turned on her heel and walked quickly across the driveway to the great house before her nerve failed her.

Davenport Manor was currently open for visitors, so she walked in through the front door and was met by a smiling elderly lady.
“Can I help you?” the woman asked kindly.

“Yes, please.” Alice twisted her hands together nervously. “I’m here to see Mr Davenport. I’m here for an interview for the property manager’s role.”

“Yes, of course,” the woman replied, “that’s today, isn’t it? Follow me; I’ll take you to Mr Davenport’s office. But just hang on one second.”

She ducked through the doorway into the next room and spoke with her colleague. Alice guessed she was letting her co-worker know she’d be gone for a few minutes. A few seconds later, she was back. “Okay, follow me, Miss…”

“Brown,” Alice said, then fell in behind the other woman as she led her to Mr Davenport’s office, and the interview that could change her life forever. It was hardly surprising that she was shaking like a leaf.

Alice quickly became disorientated as their journey took several twists and turns along dim corridors—their blinds drawn to protect paintings, tapestries, and furniture from the sunlight—and up a flight of stairs. She had a few seconds to worry about finding her way if she was lucky enough to get the job, then her guide stopped outside a door and turned around.

“Here you go, Miss Brown. Mr Davenport’s office. Good luck with your interview.”

Alice smiled and thanked the elderly woman, then smoothed down her skirt, which also conveniently wiped the nervous sweat off her hands. She stood up straight, gave herself a mental pep talk about being more than qualified for the role, and knocked on the door.

“Enter.”

Alice knew that voice could only belong to Jeremy Davenport. The posh accent, and the fact he’d said “enter” instead of “come in”, screamed money and an upper-class upbringing. Alice was suddenly desperately aware of her broad Midlands accent and lowly background, despite the fact she’d worked her backside off to get into a decent university in order to gain a Bachelor of Arts degree and then a Master’s degree. No matter what she sounded like, or what her past was, she had all the skills necessary to do the job she was about to be interviewed for.

She realised she’d left rather a long pause before opening the door, and turned the handle before the occupants of the room thought they were about to interview some kind of simpleton who couldn’t follow a simple instruction.

Fixing a polite—but hopefully not inane—smile onto her face, Alice stepped into Jeremy Davenport’s office. Her first thought—which certainly did nothing to help her nerves—was good God, he’s hot.

Jane Austen: True romantic or rational creature? Her novels transport us back to the Regency, a time when well-mannered gentlemen and finely-bred ladies fell in love as they danced at balls and rode in carriages. Yet her heroines, such as Elizabeth Bennet, Anne Elliot, and Elinor Dashwood, were no swooning, fainthearted damsels in distress. Austen’s novels have become timeless classics because of their biting wit, honest social commentary, and because she wrote of strong women who were ahead of their day. True to their principles and beliefs, they fought through hypocrisy and broke social boundaries to find their happily-ever-after.

In the third romance anthology of The Quill Collective series, sixteen celebrated Austenesque authors write the untold histories of Austen’s brave adventuresses, her shy maidens, her talkative spinsters, and her naughty matrons. Peek around the curtain and discover what made Lady Susan so wicked, Mary Crawford so capricious, and Hettie Bates so in need of Emma Woodhouse’s pity.

Tracy Johanson also knows the pain of loss on several levels. A genius with woodwork, he’s good at nearly everything except forgiving himself. With Tracy’s head at war with his heart, God is about to step in, and through Frankie, guide him onto a new path, a new future, and a blessed reconciliation with his estranged son in the most destined of ways …

A new and fresh beginning are the words that come to mind after reading Frankie Bonetti and Tracy Johanson’s story. Frankie is making a new start in a new location, new home, a new job and new relationships.

This is a pleasant read that I thought was a joy to read. Frankie is a widow trying to piece her life together. Her spiritual faith is strong and her love for people is even stronger. Frankie may be new in the neighborhood but she makes a home for herself and also happen to make friends very quickly. I like that the author displayed Frankie’s spiritual growth as well as her growth in standing for good and for fairness. Though she was grateful for her job she had to deal with a boss who wasn’t too pleasing.

I like that the author has a strong main character like Frankie who is inspiring to read about. Frankie’s life wasn’t perfect but she has a beautiful spirit of love and caring for others. I enjoyed seeing the building relationship between Frankie and Lilly and I am glad that Frankie and Tracy found love and companionship but I think their relationship moved too fast from friends to loving one another. Frankie’s attraction to Tracy was clear from the beginning but with her being recently widowed I would have liked for there to have been a longer friendship instead of the instant love.

The story contains life events for both Frankie and Tracy. Frankie was dealing with a controlling husband and now adjusting to life after his death.

Tracy is dealing with his son after his wife’s death. Frankie is a strong woman who loves people for who they are. She is considerate and looks to help others. I enjoyed reading Frankie’s story. The characters are wonderful, and for the most part developed and easy to connect to. I also found that the writing was, with a few exceptions, well edited.

I like how the author allows the characters to blossom into the best version of themselves. This is a sweet story that ends with love and happy endings.

There were some well-done plot twists in this story. I didn’t see the first one coming, so I gasped when it arrived. It was surprising, wonderful, and just a little unnerving in a good way. The rest of the plot twists were easier to predict ahead of time, but I still enjoying watching them unfold as Sonata tried to figure out if she could avoid living forever and how her loved would react to such a controversial decision for their time.

Cyborgs faced a lot of conflict with the humans they were living alongside. I was fascinated by why the tension between them started and wondered if they’d find a solution to it. While Sonata did answer some of my questions, there were still many parts of this subplot that I didn’t fully understand. It would have been nice to have more details about it so I could better understand why she reacted the way she did to the thought of becoming a robot and living forever.

Sonata’s friendship with Dante was another highlight of the storyline for me. They knew each other so deeply that they could almost finish one another’s sentences. These are the sort of interactions I truly look forward to reading about because of how much depth they add to not only the characters but also to their friendships. Dante and Sonata felt like real people to me because of it, and their relationship felt genuine as well.

The Three Lives of Sonata James was a thought-provoking tale that should be read by anyone who has ever wished to live forever.

This book had a large cast of characters, but it did a great job of introducing them all to the audience. Each dog had his or her own unique history, appearance, and personality. This went a long way in helping me remember who was who, especially in the beginning when there were a lot of dogs running around and I hadn’t yet learned to identify them immediately. I also appreciated the fact that the author sometimes repeated certain important facts about various dogs who hadn’t shown up in the plot recently in order to jog the reader’s memory. That was a helpful thing to do.

I would have liked to see a little more attention paid to the plot development. There were times when it wasn’t as strong as it could have been. As much as I enjoyed the characters and seeing how they interacted with each other, they didn’t always have quite enough to do. I would have given this tale a five star rating if there had been a slightly higher amount of conflict or adventure in it.

All of the characters felt like real dogs to me in a good way. There were times when their understanding of our world was quite different from the way a person would explain or remember the same events. A few times I had to pause and think about what specific characters was trying to share with the audience because of how dog-like their interpretations of those events were. This is exactly what I’d want to find in a story about these animals, so I was glad to see it happen more than once.

Some great tension is created when Kelly meets Mario’s mother and when they have a run-in with a volcano. There’s suspense built in when Mario’s friend acts in suspicious ways. Kelly shows exceptional personality traits. It’s hard not to respect her.

The secondary story weaves nicely around the main plot. Different types of suspense wrap around each other. Building complications keep the story moving. The action rises to an exciting crescendo. The challenge could make or break the relationship between the characters.

Kelly and Mario are faced with a very difficult decision that will keep them apart. One sees the real them come out when faced with unsavory people and their agendas.

Reading this story is a delight, an escapist story, and one I’d recommend for a quick, light read.

He likes Liam, and he wants to hook up as soon as possible, and maybe not ever let go. So, when Liam makes an offer he can’t refuse, what’s he supposed to do? Say no to the hottest person he’s ever met?

Liam had been looking forward to spending some time with his college-aged daughter, but when Portia called to say she’d been offered an internship, Liam knew his plans were shot. Pleased to at least see his daughter briefly before she heads off to Hawaii, Liam is not surprised Portia promised her best friend, Charlie, that Liam would give him a lift home. Charlie has had nothing but rotten luck with the women he’s dated, and he’s starting to think he might be trying to hook up with the wrong gender. Feeling that a bit of experimentation with his best friend’s father might not be a bad idea, Charlie is hoping to use this drive for more than just a means of transport from Arizona to Vegas.

I found this to be a fun and interesting short story. I was particularly pleased that Charlie and Liam didn’t just jump immediately into bed and get all hot and heavy with each other. While there’s plenty of chemistry and flirting, I felt the longer “getting to know you” part – and also particularly a little father/daughter time with Liam and Portia – really helped round out the story and give it a feel of more than just an erotic short story. Strong on the characterization of Charlie and Liam in particular, this book wasn’t just a few sexy scenes strung together but really felt like a story of two men in completely different places in their lives finding each other and falling in love. I really enjoyed it and found it highly satisfying as a well-rounded story.

Once Liam and Charlie become intimate I found the sex to be both prolific and hotly written. While there is an age-gap between Charlie and Liam I didn’t feel it overbalanced the connection between the two men and I certainly didn’t feel like it created a power imbalance. Charlie was certainly a grown up man, who had just graduated college and had already had a few hard knocks in life and knew what the world was about. At no stage did I feel he was portrayed as an innocent or sheltered young man nor did I feel like Liam in any way took advantage over him. The two men were well suited and while admittedly at completely different stages in their life and possibly looking for very different things, I really felt like they were well suited. And there was enough chemistry between them to singe the pages.

A hot and fun, quick read this was a great short story and an author I’m rapidly growing fond of. A great story and one I will happily reread again in the future.

The two are inadvertently on the same quest, though the lady, Katherine of Stonehill, has stepped far outside her usual realm. She is, in a way, hiding in her own domain: Kate’s history itself will involve the readers, as we share her courage and come to understand the forces driving her.

Lord Henry, the knight, is more easily and quickly understood. His quest begins in quite a straightforward way, and his courage is long-since proven.

Humor crops up here and there, even as Katherine and Henry struggle on, in a tale that involves secrets, capture, escape, and an evil master. Stonehill is a place built of wood on lowland; the very irony of its name makes us want to warn the unsuspecting good knight!

An unexpectedly wonderful touch involves a number of secondary characters; these, largely children (think of a band in the forest), contribute enormously to the overall plot, and become strong ‘characters’ in their own right.

I have one complaint about some complex conversations and having to re-read to figure out who-said-what. That sort of thing does take one a bit out of the story. It’s a small complaint though, in what kicks off in a promisingly intriguing way and never, ever lets the reader down.

The Lady of the Forest delivers all the adventures one could dream with a handsome knightly; its definitely stronger than ‘sweet’ but tastefully presented; historical romance fans will enjoy this one. Do read.

Henry was such a brave kid. One of my favorite scenes in this story happened early on when his parents told him he could search for a yeti so long as he didn’t stay up late that evening. The descriptions of how far he travelled after that conversation were as humorous as they were exciting. I couldn’t wait to find out if he’d actually find a yeti before his time ran out.

The one thing I didn’t like about this tale was how abruptly it ended. There was a conflict happening between Henry and some of the other characters that was never resolved. Based on how much they teased him earlier on in the storyline, I was surprised by this. It felt like something that should have been addressed again not only for the sake of wrapping up the plot but also to show why it was wrong for them to treat him the way that they did.

There were a few fun plot twists that kept me coming back for more. I enjoyed Mr. Ayto’s tongue-in-cheek sense of humor, especially when it came to how the main character interacted with the various people he spent time with before, during, and after his adventures. The author’s humorous spin on all of the unexpected things that happened to Henry only made those twists even more amusing than they would have otherwise been.

Henry and the Yeti made me smile. It should be read by anyone who has ever wished that their favourite mythical creature wasn’t so mythical after all.
