The Exene Chronicles by Camille A. Collins – Spotlight and Giveaway

This post is part of a virtual book tour organized by Goddess Fish Promotions. Camille will be awarding a lovely pen and notebook to a randomly drawn winner. Click on the tour banner to see the other stops on the tour.

Camille A. Collins’s lyrical debut novel speaks to the passionate engagement of adolescent girls—with music, with injustice, with love, with life. This is a courageous coming-of-age story, one that poet Nikki Giovanni recommends “sharing with our teenage sons and daughters.”

Collins’s 1980s southern California set novel is a literary debut that tackles social inequality with poetic riffs and heart-pounding angst.

It was not the paper doll cutout, but Exene’s actual mouth that Lia imagined, twisted into a snarl, blaming her. ‘It’s you, Lia! It’s all your fault what happened to Ryan!’ Because Lia’s mother had woken her to say Ryan never made it home the previous night. Fraught with worry, Mrs. Green had already phoned the police, and Lia’s first thought was that Ryan must be dead.

Right away, Lia found the only way to deal with the worst possible scenario was to confront it head-on, to embrace it as though she were cradling in her arms a soft kitten. Lia’s rendition of the death of her very best friend was not especially morbid, or as gruesomely detailed as it might have been. It was the quixotic rendering of a burgeoning poetess.

At the very least, Ryan deserved the grandeur of theater. So Lia envisioned the most enchanted garden, a neat little knoll of green, green grass nestled beneath an elegant magnolia tree in full bloom. That graceful magnolia would weep its ripe, inflorescent tears down onto a grand mausoleum. Ryan’s body would lie inside, near the hollow mouth of her final abode, a structure built of the finest marble, festooned with chiseled hearts, and inside those hearts would be inscribed eternal valentines proclaiming, “Ryan we love you” and “Forever in our hearts,” all with floating cupids, their arrows shooting heavenward. Ryan’s body would lie cold, her skin luminous, enlivened by the candent glow of four flaming torches, bathing her heart-shaped face in a delicate nimbus of pale yellow light. Her body would be covered by a white linen sheet, and nestled against the slope of her shoulders and the tapering silhouette of her waist and legs would be flowers: orchids and white roses, failing in all their beauty to compare to Ryan’s infinitely ravishing, cold, dead grace. Lia’s short reverie was disturbed by her mother’s persistence—Mrs. Payne stood in the doorway of Lia’s bedroom with a hand on her hip. “Baby, you’ve got to get up. Don’t be scared now. The police just want to talk to you about what you and Ryan did last night.”

Background to Queen Mary’s Daughter by Emily-Jane Hills Orford – Guest Blog and Giveaway

Background to Queen Mary’s Daughter

I have a passion for Scotland and everything Scottish. Its people exude an intense aura of mystique and romance. I mean, men in kilts, rugged, tough, strong. Scottish women in long robes with plaids wrapped around them or draped elegantly over their shoulders. And the landscape: lush fields and forests, rocky edifices and grand lochs. Mystery everywhere you go: Loch Ness monster, haunted castles.

For me, Scotland is part of my heritage. My grandmother (Gran) instilled in me a powerful love of the country where she was born. We read together, mostly about Scotland: Mary Queen of Scots, Rob Roy MacGregor (the Robin Hood of the north). She insisted we were descended from both, but then all Scots claim a link to the Stuarts (Stewarts) and the MacGregors.

When I was old enough, Gran and I traveled together. A lot. One special trip took us to Scotland where we traced Gran’s childhood memories. We also followed the trail of Mary Queen of Scots. We had been enjoying a number of novels and biographies about the ill-fated queen and Gran ignited my interest by telling me about ancestors who helped in the queen’s escape from her prison at Loch Leven Castle. There is so much mystery and romance surrounding Queen Mary; so many unsolved myths and legends. I always wanted to write about Queen Mary, but I didn’t want to write a biography, which has been done many times over, and I didn’t want to write a pure historical fiction novel, because I felt Jean Plaidy and others had already done a wonderful job portraying the romantic lore that surrounded this queen and her country. I kept reading new stories about Queen Mary, but it wasn’t until the Brexit debacle and the ongoing desire of the Scottish people to separate from England, that I started looking more closely at the stories around Queen Mary. I knew she had given birth, prematurely, to twins while imprisoned at Loch Leven. History records that the babies died at birth and were buried on the island where the castle sat. An interesting footnote states that the location of the burial and the babies’ remains have never been found. Another myth, unsolved legend? I started thinking, ‘what if?’ What if there had been another heir to the Scottish throne and Scotland never did amalgamate with England and Ireland? And my story unfolded.

There is a sequel in the works. “King Henry’s Choice”. King Henry from the future appears at the very end of “Queen Mary’s Daughter”. He has something to share, but never really gets the opportunity. Another Scottish time travel alternate reality.

I can’t shake this passionate love affair I have with Scotland. I’m sure there are many others who feel the same. Even though I’m only one-quarter Scottish, I am very proud of that one-quarter. As the saying goes, “there’s those who are Scottish and those who want to be Scottish.” I’m a bit of both, I guess.

There are so many possibilities that affect the course of history. One change, one small item overlooked, can make a world of difference, not only in a person’s life, but in the history and well-being of an entire nation. And then there are those multiple scenarios of what if? What if King James VI of Scotland didn’t succeed in amalgamating Scotland with England? What if there had been another heir to the throne of Scotland? One who would secure its independence? Would Scotland have remained free and independent and a nation of its own well into the twenty-first century? And would Scotland, this independent version, make its own decision to join the European Union when its southern neighbor was choosing to pull away?

Queen Mary’s Daughter presents another plausible timeline, one that incorporates both historical fact and fiction with the endless possibilities of time travel.

As the wind picked up, blowing her deep red, unruly curls helter-skelter over her face, Mary Elizabeth’s eyes focused on her hands. She stretched out the left hand, revealing the old ring that sat on her baby finger. It was a tiny ring and it only fit on the one finger. At the same time Gran bestowed the heirloom gift on her granddaughter, she had shared her story of the ring, at least as much as she was willing to share. The ring had been in the family for generations and only the firstborn daughter of the firstborn daughter (and so on and so on) could wear it. The ring was her connection to a past she wasn’t sure she believed in, a past that had been shared from one generation to the next. Or was there more? Was there a story her grandmother never managed to share?

What would she find at Loch Leven Castle? The clues had to be there. But the boy said it was mostly ruins, crumbled walls and tumbled stones, except for the tower. Queen Mary’s tower. What could she possibly unearth to collaborate Gran’s story? And she only had two weeks to do it. She couldn’t afford more time away from work. Even though it was a poorly paid entry level job, she didn’t want to risk losing it.

A glow emanated from the ring on her outstretched hand. She felt a warmth spread up her arms. The wind picked up, violently tossing her hair in every direction, swishing her coat ends like laundry hanging loosely on a clothesline. She faced into the wind, allowing its vicious impact to draw her forward. She took a step, then another, until she felt the cold wet of the lapping waves of the loch splash over her feet. The water was cold; it jolted her back to reality. What was she doing walking into the loch? What was the strong pulse pulling her forward? She allowed her eyes to glance out across the loch, now almost obliterated by the darkened storm that raged all around her.

“Miss.” She heard a voice from behind her as the power continued to drag her into the loch.

“Miss!” A hand gripped her arm, yanking her back toward the dry shore. “Miss!” The hands tightened their hold as she tried to pull away, tried to return to the loch. A scream pierced the air. She didn’t know where the scream originated. It sounded like it came from across the water.

It also sounded like it came from deep within herself.

Another scream and everything went black.

Dedicated career girl Holly Grant has no time for romance. She doesn’t need a man to complete her, thank you very much. Building Grant Realty takes all of her time and attention. If she can close a deal for Turnaround Farm, her business will take off like a rocket. Her first problem is that Jeb Wakefield doesn’t want to sell his farm, and her second problem is Jeb’s grandson Dan, the finest looking man Holly’s ever seen.

Enjoy an Excerpt:

“Wow, that Elizabeth Lane is your cousin? Everybody knows who she is. She makes the news and the tabloids almost every day. How many Oscars has she won?”

“Three.”

“I love her movies,” Holly enthused. “I think they’re some of the best Hollywood ever made. Isn’t she pregnant with her first child?”

Dan nodded. “Yeah, she is. She married a senator’s son. Isn’t it funny that a person like her is my cousin?”

Holly looked surprised. “I don’t see a thing amusing about it. She may be the only famous Lane in your family, but I know of at least one more who turned out all right.”

“Who’s the other one?”

“You.”

Dan’s face burned. Wow, he hadn’t expected that. Holly’s face looked as red as his felt, and she refused to look at him.

Her flushed face put his discomfort to flight. He took her in his arms and kissed her just as he’d longed to do all morning. As he raised his lips from hers, Holly’s eyes fluttered open. Dan’s breath caught in his throat at the stirring of passion in those beautiful blue eyes. Could she really want someone like him? He had nothing to offer her.

This did not seem like the time for questions or doubt. With a sound low in his throat, Dan’s mouth came down on hers. Boldly, he ran his hand down her side to her hip. When his fingers splayed across her buttocks, she started to tremble. And oh, glory be! She pressed herself against him and didn’t seem to be in a hurry to go anywhere.

I’ve been writing since 2001 when my son asked me to proofread a book he’d written. I figured if he could write a book, so could I. My first published novel, A New Leaf, was the winner of the 2003 Timeless Love contest. If I wasn’t sold on writing before, that did it. I’ve been writing ever since and don’t have any plans to stop. Frankly, I don’t think I could even if I wanted to. Writing is a strange compulsion that drives me to spend long hours in front of a keyboard when I could be doing important things like napping or eating chocolate. My house isn’t dusted as often, I rarely cook, and who cares if the laundry gets done or not. Yeah, no doubt about it, I’m addicted.

Evil is always listening. Frustrated writer Zach Moore vows he “would trade his soul” if he could write the way he always wanted to. In an attempt to overcome his crippling writer’s block, Zach and his wife Nikki move from New York City to the Hudson Valley, land of the legendary Sleepy Hollow, where he meets Kendra Evans, a beautiful and mysterious young Satan-worshiper. Kendra offers Zach the creativity he longs for. But will getting everything he’s ever wanted cost him everything … and everyone … he already has? Filled with vivid imagery and adult themes, Dreams of the Muse is intended for mature readers only.

The plight of a ‘blocked’ writer is not so hard to imagine, and this desperation fuels author Zach Moore. He’s already a success, but desperate to hang on to it. Does this become the old “sell your soul” story? Well no…because there is a further temptation by the beautiful evil Kendra, and the intrigue develops from there.

We understand Zach, but admire his resilient wife Nikki. Their relationship is everyday, down-to-earth, and somehow nicely parallels their sex life. Dreams of the Muse is entirely unpredictable, largely because of these powerful characters.

Kendra, who would be his muse, his possessor (she is too complex to be simply evil) circles in, gaining power as we somehow grasp her motive. The eerie start is great although the further opening is not at the pace of the rest of the novel but, once past the beginning, the haunting setting, unpredictable plot, and our own desperate hopes all make this a page-turner.

Margaret Ingleton was delighted when her brother came home but both shocked and worried when she heard he had a secret mission for the crown and had been shot trying to carry it out. Eager to do her duty and help out, she turns to Colin for his unwitting assistance. Margaret has loved Colin her whole life, and he secretly has feelings for her too. Can they survive the danger and find their way together?

I admit that I’m still a fairly new reader to the whole Steampunk genre. This is only the second novel set in that sort of world that I’ve read and it still takes me a moment to adjust my brain when I read “airship” and “mechanical gears in his brace” and other associated things thrown casually around in the text. I admit the genre is growing on me, but it still takes me a bit to think about what’s written and imagine what the author is conveying. It’s still not an easy, comfortable reading style for me but I admit to liking the world-view more and more.

That said, I really enjoyed Colin and Margaret’s story. While I didn’t fully understand Margaret’s initial instance on keeping Colin in the dark about her secret mission (she was coming to him for help because she trusted him – therefore NOT trusting him with the truth seemed paradoxical and a bit silly to me, personally) I did almost instantly like Margaret as a character. I found her a good blend of both modern and historical without being too clichéd and so both liking her and feeling able to relate to her put a very good slant on the story as a whole for me. I also really loved Colin’s character. Wounded, strong and having the freedom (as the third son) to tred his own path I was both relieved and thrilled that I found Margaret a suitable match for him. All these things rolled up with a bunch of espionage action and this turned quickly into a fast-paced, thoroughly enjoyable story for me.

While the plot wasn’t precisely new – that whole well-worn “secret mission for the crown and people getting shot left and right” – I personally found it handled quite well, and with interesting characters, a new-to-me Steampunkish world and a curious blend of modern and history it all worked well and kept me eagerly turning the pages.

Readers who enjoy spy/thriller stories and who aren’t sure about Steampunk should definitely give this one a try. I’m quite glad I did and honestly enjoyed it – even if the modern/mechanical Steampunk references threw me now and then. Margaret and Colin had a lovely romance and shared a number of steamy kisses. I was pleased that they were intimate, but while the scene was graphic it wasn’t over the top or written in a titillating manner. I found it gentle and loving and sensually written and I feel most readers should enjoy the scene.

For the most part a wonderful action/adventure/spy style of book this interesting Steampunk story had a great romance between Margaret and Colin and should appeal to a wide variety of readers. Recommended.

“Don’t feel too bad… you weren’t the first to fall for my husband’s patent lines. Although, I must say you’re a cut above his usual conquests.” Lauren stood in the doorway. Switching on the light switch next to her, she moved into the room. Barclay had gone white as a sheet beneath his perpetual salon tan.

“And don’t worry dear,” she spoke as she looked at her husband with a cold smile on her features. “I just ordered a wonderful gift from Tiffany’s from you to me… to begin to make amends for this latest little transgression.”

“It wasn’t a transgression,” he spoke, finding his voice. “We never even had sex.”

“Really?” A fine eyebrow rose as the cold eyes landed on Calla. “Smart woman… keeping him on the hook until you got what you wanted. But I think we all know that your services to this firm won’t be needed in the future. I’m certain my father-in-law will back me up on that.”

Calla’s anger had stiffened her resolve and she had had enough of the whole sordid scene. Rising from her chair, she looked at the pair and slowly shook her head. “I can say that I’m the lucky one in this room right now. I managed to sidestep making the worst mistake of my life. No two people could be more suited to each other than the pair of you. And while this is still my office, you can both get out.”

With a couple of nineties rom-coms tucked inside my purse, and a fresh carton of Ben & Jerry’s in a bag hanging off my forearm, buried in the bottom of my purse, I was determined to make up for lost time.

I knocked twice, like always. Once to make my presence known, and the next to make sure Max wasn’t in there screwing one of his many flavors—though I didn’t see his car either. Unlike every other time I’d stopped by, nobody answered…at least at first. But then I heard it—a grunt, followed by a, fuck me and then an, I’m coming, hold on.

“Oh, God.” I took a step back, looking over my shoulder toward the driveway, more than ready to run.

No, no, no. I knew that voice.

There was no time to escape, though, because a second later he was there. And quite frankly, my legs weren’t capable of moving, either. Because the moment that door whipped open and I saw him standing there, I was screwed with a capital S.

“McKenna…” He said my name on an exhale, while his hypnotic green eyes raked over me in one long, agonizing swoop. His cheeks grew bright red—making him look bashful and, adorable, not the tough- guy like his friends tried to be. When he bowed his head, I took a second to look him over too, frowning when I noted a clump of black sticky, gooey stuff clinging to the ends of his lashes, and a smearing of something shiny and red on the corners of his lips and clinging to his beard.

“H-hi.” I cleared my throat, attempting to remember why I was there in the first place. The intensity emitting from this man tended to make me forget pretty much everything.

“What are you doing here?” He folded his arms over his massive chest. The same chest I’d touched… The same chest I’d kissed…

I blinked. “W-where’s Addie?”

He frowned and that beard of his shifted, conforming with the movements of his jaw. “Grocery store. She asked me to watch Chloe for half an hour.”

“You? Watch Chloe?” I snorted.

“Yeah. Me.” His eyebrows drew together as he propped one hand against the door frame, a dare in his words that said, challenge me and you will lose.

Except I highly doubted this man could ever beat me in a match of wits. Regardless, he did have me mesmerized, like as always. His hotness, his coyness, the vulnerability I knew he embodied… Total. Human. Catnip.

I swallowed, watching his forearm flex. Gavin was humongous in every sense of the word. I may might have been a little tipsy when we’d had sex, but the delicious soreness between my legs the next morning proved that big was so very worth it.

My face grew hot at the memory, my mouth opening and closing like a dunce’s. Who was I? Where was I? And why the hell did I have an unexplainable urge to drop to my knees before him?

Because you like him.

I frowned and held my chin up high. “Mind if I come in and make sure you didn’t tie the tyke up?” Without waiting for a response, I ducked under his outstretched arm, holding my breath as I did. Unfortunately, the air in my lungs did little to block the heavenly, masculine smell he emitted. Spice, pine, soap… The combination made my lady parts tingle and my head spin in remembrance.

I didn’t do men for more than a night. Not anymore. Not since Penis-Head Paul. So, what was my issue? One and done, that’s the way it was supposed to be. Not third time’s a charm, damn it.

Ignoring his are-you-kidding-me expression, I headed into the living room, finding the coffee table filled with all things princess. Crowns, feather boas, fake earrings, and… “Is that makeup?”

He cleared his throat. “Yeah, um, give me a second, would ya?”

I grinned at him, watching, yet again, as he bowed his head—this time rubbing at the clingy black goo on his eyes and, yes, the red lipstick on his beard.

Oh. My. God.

He’d let the kid put it on him?

Be still, my beating heart.

Join Pete in his quest to answer the world’s oldest question: Why do I have to wear pants? Wait, that’s the second oldest. Born from the one-of-a-kind imagination of Rowboat Watkins, this hilarious book (the asides just beg to be read aloud) about finding out who you are features a satisfying and touching ending that will encourage young readers to be true to themselves as it reminds the adults in their lives to support them no matter what.

Some questions aren’t easy to answer at all.

There’s something to be said for snappy dialogue that keeps the plot moving at a fast pace. Given how quickly Pete moved from scene to scene, it made sense for his conversations to be wrapped up as soon as they were. I honestly wouldn’t have expected anything else from these characters. A few short sentences per page were more than enough to get their points across, and sometimes they even needed less room than that.

The ending didn’t make a great deal of sense to me. After watching Pete try to figure out what sort of creature or object he was, I was not expecting him to come to the conclusion he did. It simply didn’t match the tone of the rest of his tale, so I felt disappointed when I realized that my time with these characters was suddenly finished. I enjoyed the beginning and middle quite a bit. If the last few scenes had followed that same pattern, I would have chosen a much higher rating.

Some of the funniest scenes were the ones that showed how the other members of the forest reacted to Pete as he searched for his answers. Their relationships with him were as silly as they were interesting. I couldn’t wait to find out if their assumptions about who and what this little fellow was would match his own decisions on the matter.

I’d recommend Pete with No Pants to anyone who has ever wished they didn’t have to wear uncomfortable clothing.

Josh Harris is all dad all the time. A busy college professor and devoted single father, Josh tries to be happy with only his son for company. Josh’s son, Ernie, can’t wait to go, so Josh dresses up like a movie cowboy and saunters over. It’ll be the best Halloween of Ernie’s life, but there’s another sharpshooter roaming the dark corridors, and this one might have a special treat for Josh….

Josh didn’t regret a minute of his lonely, uncool life because his small son, Ernie, made everything completely all right. Until the studly Trex moved in next door with his younger brother. Trex and Bogo instantly turned their house into the streets Halloween Haunted house and when Ernie makes friends with both Trex and Bogo Josh discovers maybe he doesn’t need to remain alone.

I found this to be a fun and happy short story. I loved all the silly mayhem in the haunted house and loved the heat that’s generated almost instantly between Trex and Josh. I found the romance between Trex and Josh moved a little fast – but really couldn’t blame the author as this is a very short length story. Despite the speed I did enjoy how genuinely connected Trex and Josh came across to me. This wasn’t just a quick fling and Mr Right Now style of story – I was pleased that the two men seemed to have a solid spark and both were interested in building something more longer-term than just a few rolls in the hay.

I also thought the author didn’t skim on the Halloween aspect to the story. Instead of the holiday being just a part of the backdrop I felt it was really thoroughly integrated into the plot and that helped sell me on the story as a whole. It also meant this short story wasn’t just about Trex and Josh – but about them starting some new traditions and enjoying the holiday as well.

Fun and happy, I found this to be a lovely short story.

The walk back and forth to the honky-tonk was getting to her. She’d been keeping her eyes open for a spot to camp closer. So far, nothing beat this tract where she’d first parked the bike. The scrubby trees provided a break from the wind, and there was a freshwater stream just a few minutes’ walk through the brush. But she did need to start thinking about a more semipermanent solution. She’d text Jamie today to find out how long she could hold the job in New Orleans. If things looked good on that front, she could bunk with Dixie for a while and still make it to Louisiana before New Year’s.

Her backpack stuffed with dirty clothes and with a grumpy Chihuahua in his soft- side crate, she set off on the walk back to the Rambling Rose. She arrived in enough time to brush her teeth and put on a touch of makeup in the bathroom.

For the next couple of hours, she mixed mimosas and hauled trays of Texas french toast and huevos rancheros to the waiting crowd. The kids wanted to touch her hair, and more than once, she caught a skeptical glance from a surly local or concerned parent. She was about to sneak off to the backroom to take Hendrix out when someone shrieked her name from the doorway.

“Jinx!”

Kenzie barreled across the room, legs and arms flapping like she’d just seen her favorite cartoon character. Jinx caught her right before Kenzie plowed into her. Scrawny arms wrapped around her waist, and a mass of light-brown hair pressed into her gut. Jinx instinctively hugged the kid back.

Kenzie took two steps backward, grabbed Jinx’s hand, and began tugging her toward the doorway. “Daddy told me you work for Aunt Charlie now. Are you gonna have breakfast with us? I like the french toast sticks. Angelo always makes them look like a face and gives me extra whipped cream. Do you like whipped cream?”

“I…uh— ”

“You gotta like whipped cream. Papa sometimes squirts it into my mouth from the can.” Kenzie’s voice quieted as she glanced at the older man standing next to her dad. “Oh, I wasn’t supposed to tell Daddy that.”

“You must be Jinx.” A woman about Jinx’s height enveloped her in a hug.

Awkward. Who in the hell were these people? So far, Texans sure seemed to like to dole out the hugs. All of them. Well, all of them except the tall, dark, and cranky deputy. Jinx stood still, waiting for the moment to pass.

Cash cleared his throat. “Sorry, my family’s made up of huggers. Mom, enough already.”

The words sounded funny coming from the man who couldn’t seem to stand her. He definitely didn’t strike her as a hugger. Or much of a smiler either. The chip on his shoulder seemed to be as big as the double- wide where she’d last seen her own mother.

Cash’s mom backed away. “I’m sorry. It’s just that Kenzie and Charlie have told us so much about you. It’s nice to finally meet you.”

Jinx side-eyed the beaming girl. They’d only met once. What could Kenzie have told them?

Cash gestured to his mother. “Mom, meet Jinx. Jinx, this is my mom, Ann, and my dad, Tom.” He shifted from foot to foot, clearly uncomfortable performing the introductions.

Tom offered a hand, so Jinx shook it. Warm, rough, the way she imagined a rancher’s hands would feel. Charlie had told her she grew up around here with a ranch full of brothers. Lucky for her she had so much family around.

“Can you eat with us? Nana, can she?” Kenzie grabbed Jinx’s hand in one of hers and Ann’s in the other.

“We’d love to have you join us. Kenzie, why don’t you go find a table?” Ann pointed to the far side of the room, at the tables closest to the windows.

Couldn’t they tell she was on the clock? Surely the logo T-shirt or apron ought to provide a built-in excuse. “Oh, I’m actually working right now. I can’t— ”

“Place is about cleared out, wouldn’t you say?” Tom gestured around the mostly empty room.

The brunch crowd had come and gone. A few regulars sat on barstools watching a college football game. Dixie walked by at that exact ill-timed moment.

“You go ahead, Jinx. I’ll cash out the table you’ve got left. Enjoy the break.” She winked, and Jinx vowed to royally screw up her next cocktail order.

“It’s all settled then. Looks like Kenzie found us a table.” Tom guided his wife toward an empty table where Kenzie sat, swinging her legs in a too-big-for-her chair.

Jinx looked up at Cash, waiting for him to make up some excuse. She didn’t want to budge her way into their little family lunch.

Instead, he pulled his mouth into a resigned line. “Shall we?” He gestured toward the table across the room.

Toward his mom and dad.

Toward his kid.

Toward uncharted territory.
