Despite his best efforts, Agenor Acheros’ was unable to completely dodge his opponent’s whirling axe kick. Rather than a clean, visage altering hit, however, the blow thudded into the Spartan lieutenant’s thick chest.

Ow, he thought with a grunt, the woman’s combat boot sliding off the right side of his dark green gi. Agenor did not give his sparring partner time to regain her balance, allowing his dodge to the left to flow into a crouch. Even as Lieutenant Abigail Schweizer realized her vulnerability, Agenors braced himself on his left arm. This was followed by a left leg sweep that knocked his diminutive opponent onto her back. Continuing the motion with a speed and agility no man his size should possess, Agenor completed an almost complete rotation on his straining left arm. Schweizer was just trying to regain her bearings when Agenor’s feet came back around and caught her steel-toes-first in the back. The blow elicited sharp cries and gasps from onlookers as the woman flung forward several feet.

Let’s finish this, Agenor thought, coming to his knees then springing to his feet and striding towards the stunned Schweizer. He felt a calmness descend upon him, blue eyes narrowing as he carefully stalked towards his opponent.

She might be faking. Either way, she will yield.

“Enough!” Captain Mordechai Butler barked, stopping Agenor in his tracks The tall, thin officer stood just outside the “Square of Enlightenment,” Alpha Company’s nickname for their designated sparring area. Agenor stopped to look at him, face quizzical.

“The Square has spoken,” Butler continued, signalling the end of the fight. Unlike the two lieutenants, Butler wore the standard Spartan Marine camouflage uniform. Inside of the Basile’s dark grey compartments, the clothing’s adaptive threads had adopted a mottled, random pattern of grey, white, black, and silver lozenge shapes.

“The Square tells all,” the roughly sixty Marines scattered in the open bay chanted with varying degrees of solemnity.

About the Author:

James Young is a Missouri native who escaped small town life by attending the United States Military Academy. After being set free from the Hudson River Valley, Mr. Young spent the next six years of his life in the Army repaying his education the proverbial “nickel at a time.” Along the way he collected a loving, patient, beautiful spouse…and various animals that did not fit that description. Leaving the Republic’s employ, he returned to the Midwest to pursue his doctorate—a process which took twice the time planned but is finally concluded. Having now concluded two of the prerequisites to be a super villain, Dr. Young spends his time waiting for the inevitable origin story, winning writing awards (2016 United States Naval Institute Cyber Essay Contest Winner, among others), and writing an alternate history (Usurper’s War) and military space opera (Vergassy Chronicles) series. His latest book is Aries Red Sky, the first in a new Vergassy Universe trilogy.

 Nothing is more painful than rejection—particularly when completely naked!

Gloriana Warren doesn’t want to wait for marriage. Beneath her shrewish exterior is a kindhearted woman who uses her fortune for good. It doesn’t matter that the man she’s set her sights on claims impoverishment. She’s in love and determined to marry him. But her attempt at a moonlight seduction ends in disaster.

French marquis Philippe de Bellechasse has had it up to his gorgeous dark eyes with being pursued by lusty ladies. His escape to England from the violence of the French Revolution took a toll on his finances as well. Gloriana may be gloriously naked, but he’s just not ready to submit to her seduction.

But when a precious family artifact is stolen, Philippe must convince Gloriana he’s not the guilty party. He’ll steal it back for her, but on his terms. Gloriana, believing he despises her, has plans of her own. Working at odds is dangerous, but working together can be more so. Is Philippe willing to risk his heart again for a deliciously tempting shrew?

A clandestine meeting, particularly where nakedness is involved, is best arranged for a moonless night.

Or so Gloriana Warren told herself, for her mother would never have uttered such a scandalous dictum. Unfortunately, it was tonight or never. Tomorrow, the man she had sworn to love forever would leave Lancashire and return to London—without her. They wouldn’t be able to marry for years because of his stupid scruples about money.

Men and their tedious pride! She and the Marquis de Bellechasse loved one another. They shared the same lofty ideals. She had a substantial dowry. Marrying now made sense. Not only that, her mother would die happy.

So Gloriana was taking matters into her own hands. She had planned the upcoming encounter in glorious detail—every word, every gesture. As she emerged from the summerhouse to greet him, he would stand and stare at her, transfixed by her beauty.
“Darling Philippe,” she would say, reaching for him, offering herself without reserve. “Love is eternal. It cannot, must not be denied!”

“Ah, ma belle,” he would respond, his hand on his heart, his voice throbbing with desire. “I adore you. What a fool I was to think we could wait for years. Even another minute is too long. Tonight, I shall make you mine!”

She would fling herself into his waiting arms, swept away on the tide of his passion.

She wasn’t sure exactly how it would go after that, apart from plenty of kissing, but judging by her previous experience of Philippe’s kisses, it would be the most thrilling experience of her life.

She sneaked out the French doors, arms full of blankets, and glanced back up at Garrison House. Not a glimmer of candlelight showed in the windows. She hurried through the rose garden and skirted the lawn, keeping to the bushes and out of the moonlight. In the secret room under the summerhouse, she and her darling Philippe would be safe. Tomorrow they would announce their engagement to Mama. They would send for a special license and be married within a week.

Ten minutes later, she had set up a makeshift bed under the summerhouse and removed all her clothes. Shivering more from excitement than from the chilly night air, she waited for Philippe to arrive.

Tonight would be the most perfect night of her life.

~~~
The Marquis de Bellechasse left his horse in a convenient copse and made his careful way forward, pausing at the edge of the trees. Garrison House was reassuringly dark, but moonlight reflected off the ripples on the lake. The summerhouse gleamed white on its little knoll, exposed on all sides. He paused, listening. No sound disturbed the darkness except a nightjar complaining from a nearby oak. He hoped and prayed no one else was up and about tonight. He couldn’t afford to get caught with Gloriana Warren, but nor could he bring himself to ignore her passionate plea to see him once more before they parted.
He loved her—to the point of folly, judging by his current behavior. He had already said farewell, and yet here he was, trespassing on her brother’s estate at midnight to say it again. He dreaded her inevitable tears.
The door to the summerhouse stood wide open, which meant Gloriana was here already. Fine. Best to get it over with now. He took a deep breath and set out across the lawn.
He had almost reached the doorway when she came into view, rising from out of nowhere, her face pale, her hair loose around her bare shoulders. He halted, staring, his heart thundering. She continued to rise, her breasts round and luscious in the light of the moon. His eyes slid helplessly down the curve of her hips to the darker patch at the apex of her thighs . . .
Mordieu. He shook his head and began to back away. “No, chérie. We must not do this.”
She set her feet on the floor—she must have emerged from a trapdoor—and beckoned with those sweet arms, smiled with those lush lips. “Philippe, my darling, please come to me. I love you so much.”
“No, ma belle, I cannot.”
“But love—” She faltered, then continued toward him, arms wide. “Love is eternal. It must not be denied.”
Sacrebleu, she was declaiming like a shoddy actress on the stage. The thought revolted him. Surely his idealistic Gloriana could not cheapen herself so. Anguished, he put up his hands to fend her off. “It is not possible, Gloriana. Not yet. It would not be right.”
She hurried forward, her breasts jiggling enticingly. “Truly, we mustn’t delay. My mother may not have long to live, and seeing me married well is her dearest wish.”
He didn’t care in the least about old Lady Garrison, who was the worst sort of snob. He shook his head. “No. To wait is best.”
“Philippe, I cannot wait. I need you now.” She reached for him, her nakedness inches away.
He gritted his teeth and took another step backwards. His imbecile cock was reacting to her, but he had long ago gained control over its demands. “I am sorry, but I must go.” He turned away.
She wailed, a sharp, keening sound, and immediately a shout came from nearby. Her brother? No, he was in London. A gamekeeper?
Whoever the man might be, he was lurking here on purpose. So much for love, Philippe thought. Gloriana was just another lust-crazed woman trying to trap him into marriage. He turned and ran. Pursued by shouts and then shots, he reached his horse and galloped away.
Winner of the Holt Medallion, Maggie, Daphne du Maurier, Reviewer’s Choice and Epic awards, Barbara Monajem wrote her first story at eight years old about apple tree gnomes. She published a middle-grade fantasy when her children were young, then moved on to paranormal mysteries and Regency romances with intrepid heroines and long-suffering heroes (or vice versa).
Asparagus pudding proved to be pretty horrible, and she is too fumble-fingered to make socks. Now she just sticks with writing books. Elijah Sorensson has all kinds of outward success: bespoke suits, designer New York City apartment, women clamoring for his attention. Except Elijah despises the human life he’s forced to endure. He’s Alpha of his generation of the Great North Pack, and the wolf inside him will no longer be restrained…
If I didn’t know the author was female, I would have sworn I was reading a book penned by a guy. A Wolf Apart is told in first person POV, the hero, Elijah, and it’s done really, really well. Guys think and speak differently and the parts where Elijah talks to himself made me believe I was in his head.
When the hero is in the human world, he talks disjointed, like he’s ticking off boxes on a checklist of things to do, to wear, to say in order to be human, to come across as successful and part of the movers and shakers in human society. I’ll admit that the first couple of chapters were hard going for me. There were all these words that are endemic to pack society but are out of place in my simple human mind, so it bogged down the pace. I encourage readers to stick with it, to plow through because once Elijah meets Thea, the focus, pace and intent of the novel changes, all to the good.
In the beginning, the hero came across as a jerk, a player and a user of women. It’s explained why and I understood that Elijah had reached a crossroads in his life, but I still didn’t like him very much. Until Thea. There are too many times during the novel that I felt that she was more than what she seemed. Well, she kind of is, but differently than I anticipated. It played well. The author didn’t show me a romance filled with the typical tropes and I really liked how Ms. Vale painted her heroine – strong, individual, smart and loyal with a quiet dignity I appreciated. I liked Thea’s effect on Elijah and how pivotal a role she played in saving the hero from a fate he felt he was powerless to escape. There’s a power to their courtship that comes alive and I enjoyed the scenes when they were together.
Even though I labeled this novel as ‘spicy’, it’s only because the hero is pretty graphic with his description of his … physical reaction and subsequent addressing of his needs when it comes to being with a female. There are descriptive words and all that but the strength of the romance didn’t come from bedroom gymnastics but from his internal dialogue. Oh, wait; there is the scene where Thea turns the tables on Elijah in an unusual manner. But it wasn’t bedroom scenes that I focused on, it was the fact that the author’s goal was to tell a story with a plot and that was the primary goal, not how many times and how far to push the envelope during sex scenes. A Wolf Apart has a higher standard of storytelling and I liked it. The romance was strong, effective and the process was exciting and fraught with peril.
This was a really good read and once I got into the groove, I couldn’t put it down. It was so incredibly refreshing to find an author that could take a well-loved paranormal genre and infuse it with her personal creative input to make it her own. If paranormal fans are looking for something unique, give this book a whirl. It’s amazing.
Enraged that Emric wouldn’t give her an old grimoire that’s been in his family for generations, she’s still out there, looking for him and the spellbook.
Emric and Grace are drawn to each other with a magnetic force that surprises both of them. But before they can act on that attraction, they have to track down and destroy the grimoire before Emric’s ex can get her hands on it and unleash hell.
Emric couldn’t believe it when he’s turned into a house cat by an utterly crazy ex-girlfriend. All Grace wanted was an older cat from the pound who needed some love, care and a good home. When she took Emric home with her she had no idea what she was getting herself in for.
I found this to be a fun and lighthearted, almost tongue-in-cheek style of story. This is seriously one of those “disconnect your brain, sit back and enjoy the ride” books where I’ve found you need to leave a large chunk of logic and rational thought behind and just relish the story for what it is. Nevermind that no cat I’ve ever adopted from the pound has turned into a sexy sorcerer. Ignore the fact that some handsome stranger (who has sweet-talked himself into your home) has some utterly nutso story about being a cursed sorcerer with a crazy psycho witch ex-girlfriend or some family heirloom grimoire that you’re protecting from evil forces – just laugh, smile and roll with it.
I really did like Grace’s character – apart from the fact she opened her home, life and heart to a near-stranger with a really bizarre story, I found her mostly to be a modern and relatable character. Emric is also a typical handsome hero with a few problems and a strong libido. With the addition of a funny and interesting (albeit slightly nutty) plotline this is sure to be a happy and amusing caper-style of story that I feel should appeal to a lot of people. While the chemistry certainly sizzles between Grace and Emric from the moment he changes back to human form (naked in a tangle of curtains on Grace’s bedroom floor) the chemistry doesn’t become anything very physical until near the very end of the story. While part of me was pleased that the characterization and plot held center stage for most of the story it made this feel more of a spicy romance rather than an erotic one to me.
Readers looking for something heavily erotic or with a bunch of explicit sex might not find this short story satisfying, but those more interested in a good – and funny – plotline and deeper characters should find this spicy romance covers a lot of what they’re after. I really enjoyed it and would happily read more by this author.
The sexy bits
Romance is all about hero and heroine finding fulfillment in one another. An important part of that—a fundamental aspect of our humanity—is sexual. Yes, personalities have to clash at first, then find places of vulnerability where they can connect. Yes, there have to be life issues that separate hero and heroine, and they have to overcome them to find a place where they can find belonging. Yet the lion’s share of the fuel that powers the romance rocket lies behind closed doors.
Whether it’s full-on ‘mommy porn’ like 50 Shades or if the reader is left to imagine what happens once the bedroom door closes, the moments when hero and heroine come together are—pun intended—climaxes that give the reader’s and characters’ experience real meaning.
The conversation explores the tension between work life and sex life when the L.L.L. heroine, Karli, gets together with Mary Rose and their other friend, news anchor Bailey Barber. The three have been discussing a news consultant’s three-step guidance on how to report inspirational stories:
“Okay,” Karli conceded, again engaged with the earnestness that comes with just about enough alcohol and as though Bailey really were the consultant. “Some of that, yes. But you know lots of news directors will say stories on emotional effects are puff pieces or hand-wringing or whatever. They aren’t necessarily going to advance my career, in other words.”
“My career, my career,” Mary Rose mocked. “Haven’t you got anything better to talk about?” She waggled her eyebrows first to Karli and then at Bailey. “The inspiration stuff is boring. And so is your career. Let’s talk about sex.”
Karli looked desperately at Bailey, hoping to avoid that conversation. “So, Understandable and Emotional we’ve got. What does he have to say about Memorable?”
Bailey shrugged. “He doesn’t have much to add there. Just that memorable things come in threes. That’s about it.”
“Threesomes?” Mary Rose shrieked. “You two have been holding out on me!”
Karli was appalled that so many eyes in the bar had turned their way in response to Mary Rose’s exclamation. “We did NOT have a threesome, Mary Rose,” she said in her best shushing tone. “It was just the two of us.”
Mary Rose ducked her head down secretively, and Bailey eagerly returned to her seat and leaned in toward Karli. “Two of you is plenty,” Mary Rose blurted. “Girl, we need details. FULL details. Grooming and acts and dimensions and everything.”
“And when did all this go down?” Bailey asked. “We haven’t been out for drinks in forever.”
“We didn’t have sex, okay?” Karli’s blush felt like it covered her whole body. “We just had another kiss.” She caught herself and added, “Well, we had a few more kisses. But that’s it.”
Mary Rose’s face looked suddenly downcast. “How come you run warm-up laps and never do the race? This is frustrating as hell, girl. I don’t know about you, but I want more!”
Rest assured, there’s more to come for Karli and Jake. The challenge in writing the more to come scenes is daunting. Not only is it embarrassingly voyeuristic to write sex scenes for characters who’ve practically come to life for me, it’s difficult to make the sex reflect the characters’ connection. There is, after all, a lot to explore. Not only is there the difference between a blushing first time and the comfort of long intimacy between partners, there can be a profound space between encounters that where partners meet in self-giving vulnerability and soulful connection and where the encounter is just a meh means to an orgasm.
Writing sex that is truthful to the characters’ experiences and attitudes is a difficult task. Every heroine and hero need to find an authentic connection, one that is meaningful for them. Yet being faithful to the characters requires an author to draw them out of themselves and into one another appropriately to who they are, individually and together. So while I’m blushing tomato-red writing their scenes, I’m also striving to make their encounters truthful to them and satisfying to the reader.
Since excerpts would be spoilers, I don’t include any here—consider these thoughts about sex scenes as holding hands on the way home. There’s a lot to anticipate, I promise! Reader’s reactions have been positive, which is nearly as gratifying as . . . well, no it isn’t, but it’s really wonderful.
Here’s to your own happy endi¬– . . . um, I mean, here’s to your own happily ever after!
Her eyes and the smell of her skin and the pulse beating in her neck all told Jake that she was ready to be his. Her raised eyebrows and her erect, squared-off posture told him to stay away. He saw all of this in an instant, then fumbled for something to do that wasn’t kissing, in spite of the thudding pulse and the insistent twitch that urged him—now—to find the sweetness of her lips.
Jake wasn’t thinking through the feelings, the urges, the choices. Evolution or God or something had equipped men—and Jake more especially than most—with a finely calibrated system to gauge a woman’s readiness. Something—the pheromone density in the air or her posture or the pace of her breathing or some combination of those things or some other primal indicator—wasn’t yet right. One more moment of intimacy, though, and they would both be ready. Instinct guided him to the movie’s moment of consummation.
“When the heroine finds out that he really does love her and wants to marry her—that’s pretty powerful, isn’t it?”
Jake knew immediately that he’d said the wrong thing. Karli shook her head slightly and turned her blue eyes from his. She reached up and took Jake’s hand and the napkin it held from her face.
“Shut up,” she ordered him. “You think I was rooting for that insipid girl?” she asked. “No, Jake, I don’t identify with girls who need men to define them. I was cheering for the reporter. He had finally found his way to a real news job in a real market. He had escaped Des Moines.”
About the Author: H. Laurence Lareau fell in love with romances the first time Pride and Prejudice came home from the library with him. Since that high school summer, he has earned an English degree from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, worked as a television and print journalist, built a career in law, and has remained a Jane Austen junkie through it all.
The Newsroom Romance series draws from his careers, his voracious reading, and his curiosity about the tensions between real life and real love.
Real life now is dramatically different from the real life of Austen’s times—privileged women no longer choose between eligible members of the landed gentry, nor are they imperiled by the sexist mysteries of the entailed fee simple estate in land.
Modern women with the privileges of education rather than birth now embark upon careers that can satisfy many personal and material dreams. Seemingly inevitably, though, careers fall short of the promise that they’ll fulfill women as people.
Strong, modern women have defined Lareau’s professional and personal lives, and strong women fully occupy center stage in their own newsroom romance stories. Their high-profile journalism and legal careers matter deeply to them and to the people they serve.
Then love comes walking in. These book boyfriends don’t have kilts or billions or pirate ships, though. Their career goals meet and often clash with their romantic counterparts, requiring both the men and women to make hard choices about what happily ever after should look like and how to achieve it.
When he isn’t writing, practicing law, or raising children, he’s working on martial arts and music.
The past never really dies.
Justina was a sweet and likeable protagonist. Her studious but also curious personality appealed to me quite a bit. It’s always nice to read about someone who takes their education seriously while at the same time being open to new adventures. I also appreciated the fact that she was so honest about all of the things that made her feel anxious. At first I wondered why someone who was returning to a college she’d attended the previous year would worry so much about the logistics of moving back into the dorms, but as I got to know this character better I came to understand the way she thought and why change unnerved her so much. She seemed like the kind of person that would be a lot of fun to hang out with once she’d had a chance to adjust to her surroundings and settle into a routine.
This story would have benefitted from another round of editing before it was published. I noticed many repetitive, run-on, and fragmentary sentences in it. There were also some punctuation errors in certain sentences that I found difficult to understand because of how many different ways they could be interpreted. If not for these editing and punctuation issues, I would have chosen a much higher rating. The plot itself was fascinating, and I couldn’t wait to find out if Justina would ever figure out why she kept being pulled into the past.
One of the things I enjoyed the most about this book was the connection it made between the past and the present. Some events are so important that the repercussions of them can still be felt many decades later. Ms. Beauregard did a good job showing how something that happened in the 1930s could still be so very relevant to life in the present day.
The Mirror in My Dorm Room should be read by anyone who loves time travel tales.
Helen Cullen’s The Lost Letters of William Woolf is an enchanting novel about the resilience of the human heart and the complex ideas we hold about love—and a passionate ode to the art of letter writing.
There is a mystery at hand. William has an interesting job. He’s a letter detective. Mail comes to him with unreadable or no addresses at all, and he must try to put clues together to make sure these little gems get to the right people. Lives could change if he’s successful.
Among all these great little mysteries is a big one. A woman writes letters to a man she is searching for, her great love. As William receives these letters and gets to work trying to figure out who she is, he becomes more and more intrigued with this fascinating woman. At the same time, he’s dealing with his own relationship issues with his wife.
He follows clues in the letters, sometimes to another country. Meanwhile, is he missing important things happening in his own home?
This book has great characterization. The author has done a fine job exploring relationships, hopes, dreams, disappointments, and renewed hope. The people in this book are so real to a reader discovering their quirks.
The story is beautifully written and flows across the pages, seemingly effortlessly. The author’s attention to deal is superb. Readers will like the characters and root for them. When trouble happens, the suspense is great. Will William end up with this mystery woman he’s been discovering, and if so, what will happen with the wife he loves? Meanwhile, she’s going through issues of her own.
Until the very end, readers will wonder what is to become of William, his wife, and this lady of the letters, so to speak. This is quite an enjoyable story and is recommended.
Simon has developed feelings for the girl who bedeviled him growing up, his best friend’s sister—not that Alys is a girl any longer. She’s a grown-up, beautiful, wonderful woman who makes him crazy. He obtains her brother’s permission to date her, and asks her out. And is rejected.
Alys is innocent and plans to stay that way until she meets a man who holds the same moral code, regardless of her lengthy crush on Simon. Privy to his escapades and conquests, her jealousy has turned to distaste and she sets herself on a different path.
You will understand immediately what you will be allowed to leave the hospital the viagra in großbritannien following day after the surgery. I was already sitting at the table when she entered the viagra cost india restaurant. They buy cialis cheap valsonindia.com include insomnia, anxiety and restlessness. Akarkra improves tadalafil pharmacy online your physical strength. She wants a man who has refrained from meaningless affairs, who has waited for the special woman.
Simon does the research but Google assures him he can’t become re-virginized and thus Alys is beyond his reach—until one day when he takes her for lunch in his beloved truck. That day, love changes everything.
Simon remembered Alys as the skinny little sister of his best friend – a small sprite who constantly followed the boys around, hanging on their every word. But Simon can’t ignore the fact that Alys is all grown up now, and he’s got a craving for her that just won’t quit. But Alys isn’t interested in dating a man with “experience” and Simon’s had more than his fair share of women in the past. Can they work through their problems and find some common ground together?
I was a little surprised at how judgmental I found Alys’ character. While sure, it was refreshing to have the hero be the one (and not the heroine) given a bad rep for having slept around a whole bunch – I couldn’t help but think that his previous experience was in the past and certainly shouldn’t have cast a stain on his current actions. I was also a little dismayed when I realized that had the roles been reversed – ie had the hero refused to even go on a date with a heroine who had “played the field” in the past I’d have stopped reading there and then and not had the stomach to read on. So it didn’t sit well with me that Alys refused to even get to know the grown-up Simon on a first date simply because he had experience and had played the field.
Putting that whole issue of Alys and her strangely archaic desire to have a boyfriend to “learn by experience with her” aside – there was still a lot that I did enjoy about this story. Simon is not portrayed as some wronged hero, or some perfect man on a pedestal whom all women should fall at his feet. Simon made his own share of mistakes throughout the story and was as human as the rest of us. While I admit I never really warmed to Alys’ character I could come to appreciate where she was coming from. Unrealistic as her original expectations were, when she finally admits to herself how much she loves Simon and how much she wants him she’s willing to bend her own rules and actually try to get to know the poor guy before casting him aside as sullied goods.
Understandably considering Alys’ desire to wait, there’s only one brief sex scene throughout the whole story – but there is considerable chemistry between both Alys and Simon as they go out together and get to know each other. Readers looking for a highly erotic and explicit story probably won’t be satisfied with the brief sex scene here, but I think readers who are happy for there to be a build up and plenty of chemistry should find the heat level satisfying.
A very different style of story, this story was refreshing for a change of pace. While I don’t think it will appeal to all readers, it’s different enough that those looking for something left of center might find this worth a try.
Lyuba was startled awake by the screeching of the magpie. It was the third morning in a row the large bird had settled on the crooked branch of the tall elm tree outside her hut just before dawn. She had studied the Tarot late into the night to determine the meaning of the magpie’s warning, but the message was clouded and obscure—its purpose stubbornly hidden. She only knew it had to do with her precious daughter, Carolina, and the three orphaned students whom her daughter loved and cared for—Dara, Mackenzie, and Jennifer, all three geniuses born with special talents that couldn’t be explained.
The Comino Gypsies, or Black Tribe as they were sometimes called, had been staying near Frascati, Italy, less than 10 kilometers south of Rome, the nearest of the Castelli towns. As in times past, the gypsies camped on a hill, once called Tusculum by the ancients, in the shadows of the Villa Mondragone, so named because of the many dragons carved in its brown stone edifice. The gypsies simply called it the Old Villa, and they had made this their home during the warm months for as long as anyone could remember. Even before there was a Villa Mondragone.
Originally built on Roman ruins in the sixteenth century, it had survived through the centuries as home to various Catholic cardinals and periods of abandonment until most recently when it had been sold by the college of the Jesuits to the Second University of Rome. From their camp, it was an easy walk into the rural village of Frascati. Many of the villagers living there who were advanced in age still held on to many of the old beliefs, making it easier for the gypsies to sell their wares. Through the years, the travelers and the settlers had enjoyed a mutually beneficial association. But even in Frascati, there was the hint of change; it was a different generation—younger and less experienced to the ways of life and less patient. Lyuba noticed it; the others from the tribe who made daily visits did as well. It was just a matter of time before it would become a destination for tourists, with its fancy wine and its historical villa, and the old beliefs would be cast aside and forgotten.
Once it had been a place of heart-breaking sadness for Lyuba, for it was here where her young daughter barely three years of age—Carolina—had been taken from her by the Italian authorities. In her unrelenting sadness, she had felt a great darkness toward the person responsible and taken revenge, something for which she would regret the rest of her life.
Lyuba was a choovihni—a wise woman, an exalted and envied position among gypsy women. As her birthright, she and she alone had been given the responsibility to pass on the knowledge of the travelers to those who would follow, but it was rare to find a child born with the natural gift. In all her years as a choovihni, she had only known one—her own—the beautiful one that was taken from her so long ago. And because her child—Carolina—had also been born with the gift, she was able to find her mother many years later, the Kaulo Camio, a black gypsy who went by the name of Lyuba, there in the shadows of the Old Villa. The zee, the essence of all life both animate and inanimate, had been forgiving of that one vengeful act and chose to smile upon Lyuba. Now, returning to the shadows of the Old Villa for the warm summer months was a source of great joy.
With the knowledge of gypsies from the beginning of time running through her veins, Lyuba had the ability to communicate in a way that no other could. Carolina had that same ability, although she didn’t completely understand it—not yet. But in certain situations, especially if there was danger near, she would hear her mother’s voice, warning her, telling her what to do. That ability had saved Carolina from the gypsy boy’s curse, the wicked son of the Bandoleer. It had also helped Carolina and her three gifted students when they were lost deep inside the bowels of Grand Central Terminal searching for Dara’s mother. There would come a time when Carolina would be able to communicate in the same way as her gypsy choovihni mother and also be heard. That time was drawing near.
As Lyuba listened to the sharp cry of the magpie, she prepared a cup of sassafras tea, the root and leaves taken from the tree in the early morning dew just before dawn, that time of day when the benefit of its essential oils were the strongest. Perhaps the leaves would reveal what she needed to know.
She felt a sense of urgency. Soon her tribe would be departing this place on the hill near the Villa Mondragone, for it was that time of year when the shadows lengthened and the cool darkness of night more quickly replaced the warmth of day. They would need to travel south to another place and set up their camp away from winter’s chill. She would prepare a special duk rak, her own psychic shield. Perhaps that would ease her anxiety.
