Shifter Forces Agent Holt Rainmaker is beyond pissed that he was captured. It was supposed to be an easy mission. Draw out The Collector, then arrest his sorry ass. The last thing Holt expected was to end up in a cage, but things aren’t all bad. If he hadn’t gotten captured, he’d have never found Bastian, the quiet shifter he knows belongs to him. He thought he’d never find his mate, but nothing could surprise him more than the blast of need that fills him when a pissed off grizzly comes to their rescue.

Agent Decker Stauder has seen a lot in his twenty years with the Bureau of Paranormal Affairs, but the case he’s been working the last six months is unlike anything he’s tackled before. Shifters are going missing nationwide, and more are vanishing every day. Little did he realize when he tracked down The Collector, he would end up finding not one mate but two.

Forty-three and married to his job, Decker never expected to settle down. But once he scents Holt and Bastian, all bets are off. Not only is he claiming them, he’s going to bury the man who dared to cage his mates.

Agent Decker Stauder might be a shifter grizzly bear, but he firmly believed in his work with the Bureau of Paranormal Affairs, catching and incarcerating the worst criminals. Hot on the trail of a group kidnapping shifters for nefarious purposes Decker is surprised when he hears an agent of the Shifter Forces – Holt – has been kidnapped. Holt’s wolf is incensed at being locked up, but he’s even more shocked to find his fellow cell-mate, Bastian, is his mate. Decker, Holt and Bastian are all surprised to learn they belong to each other, and none of them are willing to give each other up.

I found this to be a fun and interesting ménage story. I was particularly pleased that while the romance aspect between Holt, Decker and Bastian is strong, the plot was more than just a token effort. The ring of criminals stealing shifters for various programs – breeding, entertainment, fighting etc – was intricate and very well thought out to my mind. Most of the first half of the book is centered around the criminal plot, with the bulk of the last half focusing on the ménage that grows between Decker, Holt and Bastian. Personally I felt that both aspects of the story were given a good amount of time and I was satisfied with the balance of the story. The pacing of the romance felt a little fast and unrealistic to me – particularly considering Bastian’s complicated personal history – but since the alternative would have been a lot of talking and very little chemistry and sexual action I could easily disconnect my brain, ignore reality and just go with the flow to enjoy the story.

My only real complaint was the “big bad guy” part of the plotline was mostly resolved off screen and in a very brief manner. Considering the good initial ground-work and the heaviness of the plot in the first half of the book I really felt that this quick wrapping up in the end didn’t do justice to the complexities and seriousness of the plot itself. I’m sure all readers won’t feel the same, but I did find this resolution disappointing. The romance and steamy sex scenes, however, were really well done and I enjoyed the ménage that grew and blossomed between the three men. Romantically this story ended on a lovely high note that I found deeply satisfying.

An interesting and well balanced story I overall enjoyed this book and will happily seek more out by this author.

What’s Your Favorite Lick? by K.A. Mitchell – Guest Blog

Long and Short Reviews welcomes K.A. Mitchell who is celebrating the recent release of Bad Influence.

What’s Your Favorite Lick?

Two gay guys walk into an ice cream parlor…

No, it’s not a set up for a punch line, it’s a scene I wrote for Bad Influence. There’s a story reason behind the conversation they have there, but even choosing their flavors says a lot about them.

I’ve been fascinated—and sometimes appalled—by the recent explosion of savory and sweet ice creams and sorbets. I have yet to try the olive oil and sea salt offered by the Big Gay Ice Cream Truck in NYC, though I hear it’s a feast for the palate.

Many years ago—I think last century, I watched a really cool program on specialty ice cream and when I went out to the West Coast, I tracked down a few locations to try them out. In the east, we weren’t that adventurous at the time.

The question is: are you daring in ice cream like Eli, who chooses Old Bay Caramel Bacon, or more hesitant like Silver, who despite—or maybe because of—all the things he’s experienced is really kind of a home body? Silver would like to choose Just Plain Vanilla for Wimps, but the challenge is too much, and he gets Chipotle Chocolate.

In no particular order, here are the top five ice cream, gelato and sorbet flavors for me.

Rose (ice cream) Perfect combination. Now I want someone to make me some violet ice cream.
Matcha (ice cream) My wife says it tastes like pond scum but I love it.
Pomegranate (sorbet) Perfectly bitter sweet
Earl Grey (ice cream) I’m noticing a tea theme here, oops!
Bourbon (ice cream) Though there’s an alcohol flavored gelato I’ve had in Saratoga that tastes like what I imagine a syllabub tasted like (for you who read historical romance).

Oh! I almost forgot. I named my fictional ice cream parlor Take Your Licks. How’s that for a punch line pun?

Can a future be built from pieces of a broken past?

Jordan Barnett is dead, killed as much by the rejection of his first love at his moment of greatest need as by his ultraconservative parents’ effort to deprogram the gay away.

In his place is Silver, a streetwise survivor who’s spent the last three years becoming untouchable… except to those willing to pay for the privilege. He’s determined not to let betrayal find him again, and that means never forging bonds that can be broken.

No matter how hard he tried, Zebadiah Harris couldn’t outrun his guilt over abandoning his young lover—not even by leaving the country. Now, almost the moment he sets foot back in Baltimore, he discovers Silver on a street corner in a bad part of town. His effort to make amends lands them both in jail, where Silver plans a seductive form of vengeance. But using a heart as a stepping-stone is no way to move past the one man he can’t forgive, let alone forget….

About the Author: K.A. Mitchell discovered the magic of writing at an early age when she learned that a carefully crayoned note of apology sent to the kitchen in a toy truck would earn her a reprieve from banishment to her room. Her career as a spin-control artist was cut short when her family moved to a two-story house and her trucks would not roll safely down the stairs. Around the same time, she decided that Ken and G.I. Joe made a much cuter couple than Ken and Barbie and was perplexed when invitations to play Barbie dropped off. She never stopped making stuff up, though, and was thrilled to find out that people would pay her to do it. Although the men in her stories usually carry more emotional baggage than even LAX can lose in a year, she guarantees they always find their sexy way to a happy ending.

On a summer night in a sunbaked desert city, the wandering land appears. A fairytale village nestled in dense forest, it is a place of ruined castles, abandoned treasures, and strange creatures living in the shadows. Brought together by this impossible place are five visitors: failed painter Eli; art professor Amal; young lovers Darcy and Wes; and mysterious, haunted Coyote. Together they explore their own secret village, an entire world hidden in plain sight.

But there is darkness beneath the magic, a force pulling the visitors deeper and deeper into the place’s mysteries. As the boundaries between the secret land and the outside world begin to collapse, each of the visitors is confronted with visions of an otherworldly child, a child whose existence holds the key to understanding everything about the place that has drawn them together.

Who is this child? Why did she choose them? And will she ever let them go?

My Dearest Terrence,

I am as happy as I can remember being now that I have taken up residence in our new home. The only thing missing is you. Why do you persist in remaining in that dreary old apartment? We have everything we need here, and anything we do not have we can make for ourselves. Just yesterday I was longing to listen to the wireless, and lo and behold one appeared! I’m quite certain that the music that came out of it was nothing I’d ever heard before, but it was lovely all the same.

I fear Ella has turned you against me. Please remember that, while she is a good woman, she is foolish in her superstitions. She fears what she does not know, while I would rather embrace it. You must choose, my darling. Will you give in to fear or will you take this journey with me?

Roman and Alphonse will be joining me for dinner tomorrow (as this place’s properties render my abysmal cooking skills quite irrelevant!). I hope you will be here as well.

Love always,

Lillian

Negative Criticism? No Problem. by Gary D. McGugan – Spotlight and Giveaway

Negative Criticism? No Problem.

Like many people, it took me a while to understand criticism. How is possible to criticize someone who works so hard? How can a criticizer possibly understand what’s going on in my mind? Hours of thought produced a work, how can someone read it in thirty seconds and make a judgment call? Such are the kinds of questions I used to ask, and they’re still a cause of anxiety for many people.

Such reactions are quite understandable. Really, who wants to hear negatives about something created from passion and dedication? The instinctive answer of many people is probably ‘nobody’. But I would argue the correct answer is counter-intuitive. The right answer really should be ‘everyone’. The main reason I argue that we all should welcome criticism is based on one fundamental assumption: Each of us wants to achieve the best possible results. And criticism can make us better people. Why?

To answer that question, we really need to consider another aspect of ourselves. Have we learned everything we need to know? Is it impossible to improve what we do? I guess if you’re in the enviable position of answering “yes” to both of those questions, you can probably stop reading right here. But most of us have some capacity for improvement! In my view, we all have gaps – things about our work we don’t see, perspectives we’ve never considered, or even subjects we don’t completely understand. I’m suggesting we can all channel criticism to become better selves. Criticism helps to reduce those blind spots, broaden our views, and expand our knowledge. For those reasons, I’m an ardent supporter of criticism. And I’ve adopted a posture of not just tolerating criticism, I welcome it!

When I first pass my work to an editor for review, my request is always to highlight every weakness possible, every error spotted, and every passage that is not completely clear. I want to know everything he or she thinks might be problematic with my work. For issues other than spelling or grammar, I also ask editors to explain why they hold a concern, and I truly want to know! By welcoming criticism from the earliest stages, my editors know I welcome feedback and will seriously consider every suggestion they make. That makes them more effective editors and makes me a better writer.

When it comes time to invite beta readers to give their opinions about a work in progress, I make identical requests. I explain that I’m not looking for positive reinforcement, I need criticism from their efforts. Something isn’t clear? A character isn’t consistent? Is vocabulary too stilted? Each of those kinds of feedback and criticism helps me to improve the quality of my writing and the ultimate quality readers will enjoy with a final version.

Two of my beta readers had concerns about the number of scenes involving sex in an early draft of The Multima Scheme. Two people with the same observation certainly got my attention. Initially, I wondered how I could address that feedback with a message about human-trafficking or a character who consciously uses sex as a tool to advance her career. By carefully re-reading and re-writing passages, I found I could sometimes change only one or two words and still convey the imagery I felt necessary without as much graphic detail. Individual readers will need to decide how successfully my massage of words works.

I get the most value from negative feedback when I listen carefully – really listen – to be sure I understand the reasons for criticism completely. By making an active effort not only to hear but understand the message a critic is offering, I learn during every conversation. I think about what I’m hearing and then I decide whether to accept that negative feedback and adjust my writing or not. Welcoming criticism doesn’t mean losing control of my story. Whether a suggestion is accepted or not is entirely up to me. But I always thank a critic for their negative feedback because it gives me an opportunity to reassess.
That might be okay before you publish, one might say. But what about criticism after a story or book is in print? In my view, there’s no difference. Clearly, changes aren’t possible once a book is published (unless you choose to make them in a subsequent printing), but the feedback still has value. Chances are good you’re probably already either writing or editing something else, and you just might be able to use that negative feedback to improve a component of the new work.

The best advice I ever received about criticism is never to take negative feedback personally. Instead, if we can welcome different views and analyze feedback to understand its value, criticism can be a tool for our own personal growth and an opportunity to hone skills for wider appeal and recognition. It’s a good thing!

Can Multima Corporation withstand another attack from organized crime? While billionaire John George Mortimer copes with treatment for cancer, the accomplished CEO must also ward off challenges for control of his sprawling fictional American empire both from within the company and from nefarious powers operating outside the law.

The Multima Scheme is a fast-paced account of the lengths to which organized crime can infiltrate large global corporations and seize control of respected businesses to conceal activities that are both illegal and immoral but generate billions. It’s also a story of survival – how individuals and organizations might react under intense pressures and the ease with which people can cross lines between what’s legal and what’s not.

Using his knowledge of how large multinationals operate – accumulated over 40 years working with major corporations around the world – author Gary D. McGugan weaves a tale of intrigue using a writing style that readers will find hard to put down once started.

Enjoy an Excerpt:

His elaborate scheme to oust John George Mortimer, CEO of Multima Corporation, started to unravel with his first telephone call in the wee morning hours. His contact at The Organization reported that no one could locate Wendal Randall – a development of serious concern to Knight. To engineer the election of Multima Logistics’ wayward division president to the post of CEO of the entire corporation, he desperately needed Randall at the meeting.

Events worsened. By mid-day, Knight learned that Randall would not appear at the meeting at all. Instead – at the same time as all the other company direc¬tors – he was shocked to hear the FBI had arrested Randall and was holding him in custody, charged with multiple serious crimes. Knight might still have had a chance to carry out the Mortimer coup successfully until a subsequent startling revelation proved all his efforts would be in vain.

John George Mortimer, more devious and cunning than Knight ever imag¬ined, had somehow finagled an exchange of corporate shares. He’d found a way to convert some Multima shares from one class to another. The shrewd maneuver instantly shifted the corporation’s balance of power entirely in Mortimer’s favor. Knight’s plot had no hope of success with the new equity structure.

Instead, he found himself trapped in a rapidly unfolding disaster. A decade earlier – on his recommendation – The Organization had invested a billion dollars in Multima. And just the previous week, Howard had knowingly put that billion dollars at precarious risk with his scheme to remove John George Mortimer and seize control.

Having survived the War Between the States, Gentry is haunted by the violence and inhumanity of the war. Finally traveling home after learning of a family tragedy, he nearly loses his life in a spring-flooded riverbed.

Matthew knows he must return to Paradise, to grieve with his family. Will his heart lead him back to Bridgewater and Annie Campbell?

This is the second in Holly Bush’s The Gentrys of Paradise series (book one is the story of the parents that begin the Paradise dynasty), but can certainly be read as a standalone. I’ve already downloaded the first book on my Nook and hope it’s as good as this one.

Although other reviewers at Long and Short Reviews have read and enjoyed Ms. Bush’s work, this is the first time I’ve had the chance to read her– and it definitely won’t be the last. She has a wonderful way of letting you really get to know the characters. Matt and Annie are not perfect, but they are perfect for each other. I have to admit that one of my very favorite people in the book was Ben…I loved him and hope he’s in the first book as well!! The other secondary characters are all well-drawn as well (with the possible exception of the villain of the piece…I found no redeeming features in him whatsoever).

The pacing was spot on.. the book never dragged and during the flooded riverbed scene, I was completely gripped, hoping Matt and Ben would make it through! Also, when Annie is alone at her house… great job ramping up the tension there as well.

I love a tortured hero; Matt and Annie both have their demons to fight and I love how they realize they don’t have to fight them alone. Kudos, Ms. Bush.

Like Paranormal romance? You should grab this series right now … but I strongly suggest you start in order.

Dark Pleasures is the first book I’ve read in this series. I’m a very picky paranormal romance reader, and I’m really exhausted by vampires so I went into this a bit reserved. Let’s start out with the good (and there is SO much good about this book, and likely the entire series):

The world-building was unbelievably fantastic. First off, the author does provide a glossary at the beginning, which I read carefully and with great thanks. It explains much of the mythology behind her world, a world that is complex and amazing. I can’t remember the last time I read a book like this that had such a deep, intricate myth. Honestly, my head hurts thinking about the author creating it. Ten stars (if I could!) for the world-building alone. Special thanks to the character who jokingly called the Pure Ones Elves and the Dark Ones Vampires…it helped get a solid picture in my head.

The characters are so real, unique and three-dimensional. Devlin, in particular (and Innana) seemed really fluid. It’s clear the author knows them inside and out and they just utterly live on the page. I struggled a little with Grace, the heroine. I know she’s been diagnosed with Aspergers, but I know a few folks with that diagnosis and they’re aren’t quite as wooden and stilted as she is. In fact, for the most part, you almost wouldn’t realize they’re on the autism spectrum except for a few quirks, unless you spend copious amounts of time with them. That said, two other things come into play with Grace. First, she’s a genius…like Einstein smart. And, there’s clearly some mystery about her background that will come into play that may figure into her personality as well. Those things aside, she’s just fun to read about. She really has no idea when she’s being inappropriate, and you sure as heck don’t need to wonder what she’s thinking when she’s around you. She’s an open book about everything, including her unusual sex drive.

The plot, too, is as complex as the world-building. And herein lies my only real “complaint”. Because this was my first introduction to the series I was really pretty lost. The author does some backstory loading via Sophia at the beginning, plus her glossary, and Devlin does some thinking about Medusa in the first chapter, but it only helps a little. Between the fact that the plot in very complicated, there’s also a plethora of characters here, some that clearly had their own books prior to this one (like Ryu who’s newly married). Trying to keep the cast of characters straight (and remembering who is a Pure One, who is a Dark One, who is made, who is born, etc) and also piecing together the plot was enough to make me want to stop reading. Honestly, had I not been doing this for a review, I might have. But I wouldn’t have quit the series–to the contrary, I would have grabbed book one and played catch-up! If not for this problem, the rating here would have been much higher.

All in all, I have to say that the author, Aja James, is amazingly good. I foresee great things for her down the road. She’s creative, innovative, well written. Her skill is undeniable. My only recommendation outside of “get the entire series” is that you read them in order in order to enjoy the gift she’s given us to the fullest.

Ms. McAlan did a good job explaining what happened in the first book without it being a huge info dump.

I absolutely love the main characters, Rona and Johnny, and their banter back and forth makes me smile. Ms. McAlan does a wonderful job of creating three dimensional characters – not only the main ones, but the people in the town as well.

The mystery itself was well played out, with great clues and action. I love codes and cyphers, so this particular book was right up my alley. I also loved all the historical references in the book. I’m looking forward to book three! Thanks, Ms. McAlan! 4 stars.

“I’d be shooting someone who hasn’t done anything yet.” Professor Wells put his hand on my shoulder. “Such is the dilemma of time travel, Ted. A world where reaction comes before action. Where you as the chrononaut knows what the future will be like because you’ve lived it, even if it hasn’t happened yet.” If you could go back in time and change the course of history, would you do it? Even if you could never be sure what the change would lead to? Can any of us really foresee the impact our actions have on history and the future? Through ten independent stories, Claus Holm explores the world of time travel, dimensional changes, and new technology. He shows us a world where Germany won World War II, introduces us to people who can cast minds from the future to the past, and takes us to a future where an earthquake has destroyed our civilization beyond repair. Each story treats the question of how people deal with challenges that change their view of life. If you are a fan of Stephen King, the show Black Mirror, or if you’ve read Dreams and Awakenings, this is the book for you.

One of the highlights of this anthology for me was “I Love Her From the Mirror.” In it, a lonely and socially awkward man named Mick realized that he could see the bedroom of one of his neighbors when he looked into the new mirror in his own bedroom. While I was a little taken aback by this premise at first, I quickly grew to like Mick quite a bit. He was an honorable man who always had the best of intentions. I also adored how this one ended. There was a twist in the final sentence that was as heartwarming as it was satisfactory.

“The Phone People” was one of the few stories that I thought could have used more development. It followed a mysterious man named Dave who travelled around the country under the instructions of The Phone People, individuals he received telephone calls and packages from but never actually saw in person. This character didn’t remember his past, and he often lost large chunks of time from his present as well. As intrigued as I was by the possible causes of this memory loss and what he might be doing when his mind decided to stop remembering his actions, there simply weren’t enough details to help me figure any of this stuff out. I would have really appreciated it if there had been a little more guidance from the narrator about what was really going on in Dave’s life.

Many different emotions mixed together in “The Last Haunted House.” Warren, the main character, was still grieving over the loss of his wife when he decided to go all out decorating his house for the trick-or-treaters who were about to start wandering around his neighborhood in search of candy and frights. This tale had a dark edge that I wasn’t expecting to stumble across. With that being said, the horror elements of it worked incredibly well, and I was glad I read it while there was still daylight in the sky.

I’d recommend The Tucson Time Traveler and Other Stories to anyone who loves creative science fiction in all its forms.

Little did the sisters know that they were soon to get involved with a cross dresser, a kleptomaniac, amorous affairs, lots of cats, and a situation that puts them in peril.

All of this adds up to a book filled with escapades and events that will tickle your funny bone, but most importantly, will prove you don¹t retire to die, but to live.

A sweet romance set in a retirement complex in Florida is the setting for this humorous novel which at times is worrying for the main characters. Two sisters, Joannie and Roz, have retired to Rainbow’s End and enjoy their life and their fellow retirees company. The story follows their day to day life and the concerns they have about their neighbours, both new and existing.

The book is quite laid back with most of the characters of retirement age. It is told from the point of view of Joannie, but at times it is confusing as to who is talking – Joannie or Roz. Both the main characters and other minor characters are likeable and could be the people who live in any of the streets of a retirement village.

Good book, lots going on, lot of thought has gone into the book. Pleasant to read.

Love may be within his reach … if he is able to trust in it.

Gabe Thorne was disgusted by his sister’s plan to purchase an empath. She wanted someone who would be compelled to please her, and only her sudden death interrupted the plan. The empath she’d chosen, Ignacio, needs to bond with an anchor almost immediately, and Gabe volunteers to prevent him from being auctioned off to an abuser by his greedy parents.

Ignacio proves to be a sweet, enchanting guy, and soon Gabe begins to develop real feelings for him. Despite this, and the lifelong commitment he made when he let Ignacio bond to him, Gabe doesn’t believe they can have a real relationship. His long habit of pessimism has protected him from a lot of disappointment over the years. This time? Expecting the worst might ruin any chance of a happy relationship.

Gabe had never been close to his sister, but after her death he still felt guilty that his grief wasn’t stronger. Gabe wasn’t particularly close to any of his family, but he felt it was still a new low that they dealt in what amounted to human trafficking – buying empaths who would attach and become fully reliant on their “owner”. When Gabe meets Ignacio to inform him that Ignacio’s fiancée had died Gabe is rather upset to find Ignacio’s parents as money-hungry as he’d feared. Making the deal despite his original intentions, Gabe has to wonder what he’s going to do with an empath he never expected to have.

I found this to be an interesting and engrossing read. There’s a small reference early on to another book in the series – which I hadn’t read previous to this story – and I was pleased that I could easily read this as a stand alone novel. While set in an alternative/futuristic type of world I didn’t find that there was an over-abundance of weird slang/terms/world-building that I needed to grasp quickly. I actually prefer this sort of “easy understanding” in my sci-fi/futuristic style of stories so I was really pleased and quite relieved. It helped me focus on Ignacio and Gabe’s characters, their situation and the story itself and not have to constantly feel like I was catching up or trying to wrap my head around the world they lived in. Indeed, I felt comfortable enough with the author’s voice, the futuristic world-setting and adored both Gabe and Ignacio’s characters enough I hadn’t even finished the story before I made a note to check out the first book in the series. Personally, I can’t think of a stronger recommendation of any author or story to want to read more, new books before even completing the one I was already in the middle of.

I thought Gabe and Ignacio’s characters to be interesting and the entire situation they found themselves in to be a good storyline. A part of me felt a little like Gabe was “too good to be true”, but I think that’s a bit of cynicism on my behalf. I know I would have hated Gabe’s character had he wanted to take advantage of Ignacio or treat him poorly, so I feel a little unfair thinking the fact Gabe wanted Ignacio to be “free” and have his own life and choices was unrealistically good. The world and setting was certainly different enough that I didn’t feel anything outrageous needed to occur to add extra interest in the plot of characters. Simply the whole situation of what empaths were, and how their lives were structured was plenty of plot and world-building to keep my interest keen and as stated before I enjoyed both Gabe and Ignacio’s characters in and of themselves so that was a bonus.

Readers looking for an intensely erotic story might find the sex parts of this story a little lacking. While Gabe and Ignacio are sexually intimate toward the end of the story the focus was far more strongly upon their relationship and emotional/empathetic connections. While I was pleased they didn’t simply jump right into bed (Ignacio was both quite young and completely inexperienced to the point in my personal opinion of being borderline unable to knowingly give consent) I also would not have been opposed to the two men being intimate a little earlier than they were in the story. I can appreciate, however, that this was a fine line that the author had to walk. While explicit – and the eventual penetrative sex scene was certainly hotly written to my mind – there wasn’t an abundance of erotic, steamy sex in this story.

A surprisingly good, refreshingly different story I thoroughly enjoyed this read. I found the characters and world to be vibrant and engrossing and the relationship between Gabe and Ignacio to be extremely well written. A great new author and series and I am eagerly looking forward to reading more.
