Norfolk, Virginia, 1864. Charlie Brewster arrives to recruit African American soldiers for the Union. He is recently returned from three years of service, and though he’s physically uninjured his psychological battle scars run deep. He survived the war…can he survive the peace?

Tensie Stevens’ husband is at the front. She cannot read or write, and wants to send him letters, so Charlie offers to put her words on paper. She has never known a white man show this much kindness. As a former slave she is scarred, too, although some of hers are physical. She helps him recruit other soldiers and he writes letters for their wives as well. So near to the world of war and men he starts to learn about intimacy and women.

Charles Brewster served four years of bloody engagements in the war, and later worked to recruit African American soldiers. Though his recruiting role went beyond finding recruits he also took to writing and reading letters to the wives of men that were serving in the war.

Even though this is a book dealing with the harshness of war it is also heart warming to read about the families and how they deal with their men away at war. With the task of recruiting many men and writing letters for the women Charlie gets to hear the most intimate parts of many relationships. Charlie develops a fondness for the women that brings a heart warming feel to the book. To read and see that Charlie still suffers from mental stress of his time in the war but that he also turn around and make something loving come from that bitterness makes Charlie a real hero.

I see this as an inspirational story because of Charlie’s dedication and compassion for the men of military service. The story offers flashbacks of Charlie’s war time and his current position as a recruiter for the Army. While recruiting, Charlie is adamant that the women write to his men.  Charlie’s life seem to revolve around keeping the men at war encouraged. This is where his compassion for the men is displayed so strongly. He could have served his time and went on to do his duties as a recruiter. His being away from his mother and sister and not getting returned letters made him upset and frustrated. This could definitely play a vital part in his need to make sure others stay in contact with their families.

The book is well written and tells a unique story based off of true events. I did find the book entertaining. I wanted Charlie to find a happy ending. The dialogue such as:  “Ya’ll, Marser, and sah” took awhile for me to get use to. Readers should be mindful that the language used in the book is dialectic that was acceptable during the 1800’s and the description of war scenes may be too harsh for readers that don’t want to read the details of war.

I would recommend to those that enjoy a good read, but not necessarily one that ends in a completely happy ending.

Thad Langham’s life has been a series of unfortunate events—from being blackmailed to being coerced into working with his father on his shady business deals. When the opportunity presents itself to turn his entire life around, he takes it.

Caleb Lockhart, the resident sniper of Unit Alpha, can’t quite get Thad out of his mind. Moody, serious, and practiced at hiding his emotions, Thad is a complete work in progress. He isn’t quite ready to date just yet, but that doesn’t stop impulsive, brash Caleb from acting on his baser urges. One kiss is all it takes, and now they can’t get each other out of their minds.

Six months later, a chance encounter leads Thad and Caleb down the road to an actual relationship. But when Thad’s past comes back to rear its ugly head, how can a brash and headstrong sniper and a damaged, slightly neurotic businessman make things work? Will their mutual attraction survive the test of time or will their relationship just remain a mercenary’s crush?

Thad’s life had been miserable these past few years, a mere pawn in his father’s games. After being rescued by Unit Alpha, Thad realised he’d merely exchanged once cell for another, the bounty on Thad’s head meaning he still had practically no freedom at all. Thad is finding it difficult to adjust, but making the best of it. When Caleb kisses him though, the feelings of hope and the possibilities the small tenderness arouses blows open Thad’s life and shows him maybe there really is something more out there for him.

I enjoyed this story. Despite being the second in a series I didn’t at all feel like I was missing something – this book stands really well by itself. I was a little puzzled how the author jumped over the murder of Thad’s father. Initially, the way the book starts led me to believe this would be a big plot device. Thad’s father is a clear bad guy and the reason Thad’s life is in shambles and the one who is trying to kill Thad himself. I was really surprised, therefore, when the story jumps six months into the future and skips almost entirely over the killing and death of this man and Thad’s subsequence freedom and ability to live his own life on his own terms. I’m not sure if this was cut from the story due to a word-limit or some other necessary reason, or if the author merely wanted to focus on Thad’s recovery and life out from under his father’s thumb, but I couldn’t help but feel the jump forward in time past all that was odd and a real lost potential for a great plot.

Also because of the time-jump in the story I felt a little like the chemistry between Thad and Caleb was a bit rushed. While the reader only experiences a chapter of time between the two men, more than six months passes in the story. So intellectually I know there is more than enough time for both Thad and Caleb to get to know each other, for their attraction and crush to deepen and really flourish. But as a reader I didn’t get to see or experience any of that. Merely being told this is what happened didn’t leave me with that same burning feeling of wanting to see them act on this long, drawn out feeling and be really eager for the culmination of their desires. Even though I know they’d spent a long time pining for each other, not experiencing it for myself meant the time from their first meeting to actually coming together felt a bit rushed and I wasn’t as invested in them as I would have hoped.

That said, the sex between Thad and Caleb was truly sizzling and exceptionally well written. I really enjoyed the scene of them coming together and found it not only hot, but also good with the detail and I really felt the strong emotions from both men. I eventually became attached to both their characters and invested in them as a couple. I found the chemistry and camaraderie between them believable and sexy once the story really got moving. I also thoroughly enjoyed the plot – Thad and the rest of Unit Alpha needing to clean up the loose ends from when Thad’s father ran the company.

An exciting and steamy M/M romance with a good, solid plot I enjoyed this story.

Bart Houghton, a professional gambler, wants to quit his old profession and become a rancher, giving the MacKillian’s ranch a much needed infusion of capital. But he didn’t count on marrying Chad’s sister as part of the deal. And to make matters worse, Lindsay doesn’t approve of his former profession and believes he is unworthy as a husband.

Lindsay and Bart, despite their differences and having a marriage in name only, can’t help but being attracted to each other. As their attraction matures, they have to face the obstacles of their pasts. Can Lindsay put aside her preconceived notions about Bart? Is Bart ready to settle down and give Lindsay the family she wants?

It’s 1896 and the infamous Judge Roy Bean is the self-appointed lawman of a small Texas town known as Langtry. The town has no doctor, no lawyer, and not much of anything else of importance, but it does have Lindsay MacKillian coming home in disgrace and shame, carrying the unborn child of a gambler.

After the death of her parents, Lindsay went to live with her aunt in Boston, a town of immense respect and class—a vastly different city than the tiny town of Langtry where Lindsay left her brother behind, alone, to run the family ranch. With nowhere else to go, Lindsay hightails it home hoping to hide her indiscretion and shame.

Once there, she finds out that her brother is planning to take on a ranching partner, the handsome Bartholomew Houghton, a former gambler. Of all things—a gambler! The lowest of the low life, in Lindsay’s eyes anyway. Never mind that her pregnancy is not showing yet, it will soon enough and she will deal with it, but to be associated with a gambler, like her former fiancé, is unacceptable…if she could just keep her eyes off of him.

Bartholomew, aka Bart, could be the man of most women’s dreams. He certainly is through the eyes of Lindsay, until her brother suggests that Bart marry Lindsay as part of their partnership deal, thus hiding his sister’s unwed pregnancy. And once we find out that Lindsay’s brother, Chad, saved Bart’s life and now Bart is indebted to him, the readers will cheer his creative matchmaking.

The reality of it all is…is Lindsay worthy of Bart? Is Bart worthy of Lindsay?

This is a short book, which touches on Christmas, but not nearly as much as the title pretends. The holiday aspect is almost non-existent, which is a shame, really. I was looking forward to experiencing a real Christmas in 1896, but alas, it was not to be so. No decorated tree, no ornaments, no presents, no holiday, at all, really. Christmas day is important, but not in the traditional, festive sense.

I also found Lindsay a bit grating, maybe too judgmental for me, and the story was too short to care a lot about the characters. It is a good historical short read, and I can never imagine myself finding a Hebby Roman story disappointing, she is so talented, but I would have enjoyed a more in-depth storyline and more of Ginny and her family. (Props to the addition of Minnie, a Maltese!)

Anyone who loves historical fiction (the addition of Judge Roy Bean, albeit short-lived, was wonderful!) will sink right into this story, probably finishing it with delight by the firelight before the year ends.

When up-and-coming Miami painter Martin Fonseca encounters youthful pretty boy Andre Bellamy washing dishes in the kitchen of La Candela, he swears he’s known him before, intimately. But Andre only arrived in Miami weeks ago, after running away from small-town Alabama and his abusive father. When Martin discovers Andre trading sexual favors for a place to stay, he offers him a room in his studio apartment. As roommates only.

Martin’s obsession with Andre grows until they are sharing more than just flirtatious conversation. But when an eccentric art collector buys one of Martin’s paintings, Martin’s past jealousies resurface and threaten to destroy what he and Andre have so lovingly built.

When Andre starts working as a dishwasher Martin is drawn to him, unable to put the handsome young man out of his mind. Andre left a bad situation in Alabama and is slow to open up to Martin. Can the two men work things out?

I found this to be a really interesting, complicated erotic romance. I really enjoyed how Martin and Andre took the time to get to know each other, and the slower pace made their friendship and eventual relationship felt far more realistic to me than the quicker “meet and fall into bed” style erotic romances that are out in the market lately. I enjoyed the complexity of both Andre and Martin’s characters. There’s a small supporting cast and toward the end a big twist in the plot. While this twist takes quite a leap of faith (and has a very slight paranormal-ish bend to it) I found it extremely interesting – keeping my attention firmly embedded in Andre and Martin’s story.

While initially there is only a small hint of underlying sadness, I couldn’t help but feel as the story progresses that what started out as a lovely, almost romantic M/M romance became quite a lot darker. Martin and Andre have a somewhat rocky relationship and especially toward the end I felt the cracks in their romance are really starting to show. I found it impossible for most of the story to work out whether Andre or Martin was in the wrong – or indeed if either of them were – as the story really is quite complex. The two men have what I feel are real problems – Andre has been abused and in some ways is very young and naïve, Martin is temperamental and I felt he had difficulty communicating his true worries and feelings to Andre clearly. Far from a criticism, I felt these flaws really made Andre and Martin both appear far more realistic and understandable to me.

Readers who like plot-twists and unusual storylines shouldn’t be disappointed in this story. I feel that readers looking for a light, happy, fluffy read probably won’t find this a suitable story as it is quite complicated and especially toward the end I found it a little dark. With a happy ending, interesting and multi-layered characters and a whole bunch of twisty plot, this is a good story that I feel should appeal to many readers.

Sometimes It’s Okay to Tell
By Patrice Locke, author of “Exit Signs”

Information dump. Those are evil words writers don’t want to hear. It means you’re interrupting your narrative to explain something that you should be weaving seamlessly into your story.

And no dragging out the beginning. Jump into the middle of the action. It’s expected, demanded these days.

My book, “Exit Signs,” which Soul Mate published in September, starts at the end of the story and the bulk of the book is about how the two main characters got to the situation they’re in on the first pages. The published version of the story jumps right into the action.

But the drafts didn’t. There are approximately 6 alternate beginnings for “Exit Signs.” One starts at the beginning and goes chronologically through the action and plot. One starts with what I considered to be the funniest scene, then flashes forward and backward. One is like an essay on documentary film making. And there are others. One sounds as if a stand-up comedian is recounting the events.

In the end, though, I went with the one that leaps tall buildings in a single bound, the Superman version. I picked the scene where the narrator/main character is facing her Kryptonite, is falling apart. That way, we can see what drove her to that precarious spot.

But it’s got to be action. No information dumps allowed. I get that. Usually I do. But sometimes I have the urge to dump away, a tendency that was excused and even applauded at some times in history. Take Jane Austen, for instance. Even people who don’t like her can’t help but admire the way she hoisted her prose around like a lady construction worker. She did the heavy lifting and sometimes she stopped to tell her readers about the side plots. She spends the first few pages of “Emma,” for instance, pouring the foundation for her heroine’s personality.

I know exactly what a writing critique group would say about that: information dump. And, yes, it is just that. She does it with elegance and style. Maybe that’s the key to being allowed that luxury.

But she’d never get away with it today. And how about Mr. Darcy’s letter to Elizabeth Bennet when he skins, carves, and dissects Mr. Wickham’s character? Not a word of dialogue or action. He just dumps that information. And it works.

Of course, most of us aren’t Jane Austen. Okay, none of us are, but we can all take lessons from her. She has a lot to teach us, though her way of storytelling is not in style.

You’ve got to capture the editor, agent, reader, whoever right out of the gate. No time to mosey up to the starting line. You have to open with the starting pistol blast. And there’s nothing wrong with that.

I do, however, sometimes want to sit and think a spell about the characters and setting, and maybe even the background stories before I delve into a book. I’m the type who likes to enter a pool one step at a time instead of careening off the diving board at full speed.

And there’s nothing wrong with that approach. To each his or her own. For myself, I think it’s okay, maybe even better sometimes, to tell rather than to show.

Tracy Price has a documentary-style life until rockstar Jesse Elliot rewrites her script and takes the wheel to drive her crazy.

In her quest to find a writer missing since the 1930’s, Tracy thinks she has discovered exactly how to handle her new relationship. But she may be listening to the wrong voice.

Then Tracy and Jesse find out they’ve both been keeping some big secrets, and the truth may ruin everything.

Will sharing the missing writer’s story open both their hearts?

Read an excerpt:

Jesse lunged toward me. It was too late. I had already launched. He reached out but didn’t connect. Instead, I broke the trajectory of my upper body by grabbing him at chest level and sliding down. He was pushed backward into the table, which stabilized our ungainly host-parasite tableau. He softened my landing so that physically I was fine, but my pride was ready for intensive care.

Heaped at his feet, like a demented penitent, I hugged his knees, my face pressed flat into his thighs. I might as well stay down. What’s worse? To stand up and face you, or remain here, nestled between your legs? What do you think? Then, the finishing touch: I erupted into nervous, snorting laughter. He guessed there was no serious injury.

“It’s nice to see you, too. You are okay, aren’t you? Can you stand?” He reached for my arms to unwrap them from his legs and help me up. I jammed my eyelids together to conjure up a do-over, but no such luck.

I would have to deal with it.

He held my elbows in his hands. “I guess we were both in a hurry to see each other.”

I do appreciate your attempt to lighten the mood, but you are standing SO close. I can feel your body heat. Or is that mine? By the way, you smell tart and fresh, like a lime.

I stared at his shoulder. My dignity meter was stuck on empty.

“Enthusiastic greeting. Thanks for that.” He was blatantly amused.

“It was nothing.” I stepped backward to regain a semblance of independence. Don’t mock me. But, you did go to all the trouble to bring your hair. And your eyes. I might forgive you for witnessing my disgrace. That hair.

About the Author: As a journalist, Patrice Locke wrote a lot of stories with unhappy and even tragic endings.
Facts are facts, and a writer doesn’t mess with facts.

But fiction is another world. Patrice began writing novels, where she could control the endings and make them as happy as she wants. The best thing about fiction, she says, is having time to think before her characters speak, so they can say the things most of us only come up with after the perfect moment has passed.

She loves to write, read, and watch romantic comedies where life always turns out the way it should. Her only obsessive relationships are with semicolons and Oxford commas.

Though she doesn’t like to brag, Patrice is an award-winning artist. She won a gold and diamond watch when she was 13 for decorating a turkey drumstick bone to look like Batman. Alas, that was her last recognition in the fine arts.

Patrice lives in Albuquerque, New Mexico, where the blue sky is brilliant, the air is thin, and the vistas are breathtaking. She is none of those things, which is one reason she enjoys living among them.

This is the seventh book in the Arcana Archaeology Adventure series and I regret I’ve not read the other books in the series. Not because this book cannot stand on its own, but because this is a darn good read and I hate that I’ve missed out on six books of this kind of writing!

The Sage Stone Prophecy is exciting, the characters are well-drawn and three dimensional, and the writing is tight—it was so exciting that I finished the book in only two nights (it was good enough that, had I had the time to read during the day to my heart’s content, I could have finished it in one day).

I don’t want to give away any spoilers—and I do plan on going back and buying the first six books in the series then rereading this again—because there are so many things going on. It reminds me a great deal of the books by Dan Brown – you not only have an exciting treasure hunt with clues that need to deciphered along the way, you will learn a lot about matriarchal societies and the role of the goddess in those.

Great job, Ms. Wikarski. I’m only sorry I was so late discovering you and this series.

Anne was pleased to see the detective she’d met on a previous murder case. She had lied to him then, so she know he wasn’t going to resume their friendship as it was in the past. But she was determined to be at least friends and maybe something more.

When another agent is found in dead in his room, the case speeds up. Anne finally remembers what she had forgotten and almost gets herself killed by letting her face give her away.

It’s a fast, exciting read with lots of characters to both love and hate. It’s easy to feel sympathy for Anne who is trying to recapture a lost love, get rid of an unlikeable critique member, and stay alive.

Smart, big-hearted, and passionately dedicated to her work, Lady Justice longs to teach her nemesis a lesson in humility. But her sister is missing, and a perilous journey with her archrival into unknown territory just might turn fierce enemies into lovers.

The Earl, part of the “Devil’s Duke’ series, introduces a pair more likely to become sparring partners than a romantic couple. Indeed, the circumstances they confront are far more serious than romantic: and beyond the usual scope of political intrigue as well. Emily, the self-styled “Lady Justice’ has a terribly personal reason for reaching out to the duke for help.

She’s a ‘pamphleteer’ in the early 1800’s London- struggling for the rights of women. She’s identified various members of the Falcon club (a gentlemen’s club) as thwarting her endeavors and… Colin, the just-stepping up to Dukedom, is among those on the ‘other side.’

But when her own sister goes missing somewhere in the wilds of Scotland, it is Colin she reaches out to. He might be her nemesis, but he’s no fool…and Scotland is by no means as tame as London!

The complex heroine is especially appealing. She’s firm in her beliefs but so resolute toward her goals that she’ll bend to ‘using’ someone she considers ‘against’ her. She’s smart: she keeps up with news, uses her maid to keep up with gossip, and knows all of the goings-on of the day ; but in her own, familiar city.. Scotland might be a whole other world…

And Colin is equally admirable, not because he steps in to assist a lady; but because of his own complexity. He must put aside self-doubt, as well as (to some degree) family expectation, but he becomes as firm in his resolve as she.

The Earl is incredibly engaging, primarily for its deep and determined characters, but also for its wonderful backdrop – exactly as expected, yet more. The plot is completely unpredictable. This is simply a super read.

Together, they burn up the sheets, and Erin finds himself willing to spend more than one night with Jude. Soon, a relationship blooms, but the bad news Erin gets might put an end to any dreams he had for the future.

Erin was dangerously close to forty and finding himself dissatisfied with much of his life. Erin had known for years that vampires were real – his twin brother Andrew was in a serious, long-term relationship with one for starters – but Erin tried hard to just enjoy his life and not get too involved with any one man. Out clubbing Erin bumps into Jude, a vampire he’s known for years. Erin is surprised when Jude comes onto him but can’t resist. Will they both regret it later?

Whew! Keep a cold drink handy and make sure you turn off your phone. This is a steamy hot read that jumps pretty much straight into the sexy stuff. Erin and Jude have been friends for ages, and when Jude finally decides it’s time for Erin to stop his playboy ways the two men certainly know how to set fire to the bedroom. I really enjoyed how carefully and slowly Jude led Erin into their relationship. The small steps they each took bringing their friendship to be friends-with-benefits, then more than just friends, it was a great progress and one I thoroughly enjoyed following. I also really enjoyed how the story wasn’t simply loads of sex and not much character growth, Erin was at a real turning-point in his life, even though he was only partially aware of it, and having Jude there to support him and help fulfil him was a lovely thing to see.

The plot was very character-based. Erin has a very big, life-altering event happen and watching him, Jude and their friends deal with the consequences was heart-wrenching and kept me engrossed in the storyline. I could strongly sympathize with Erin and the choices he was determined to follow through on.

The plot, the interesting characters and the wonderful sex scenes all worked together to make this an excellent story and one I will happily read again in the future. Recommended.

Considering Jacob’s dark past and the lost family that steps forward to claim Annie, Valarie has much more to contend with than she had initially considered.
