Gardening

The first gardening mistake I made when we moved to rural Vermont 17 years ago was thinking that perennials are something you plant once and enjoy forever.

Ohhhhhh no. Oh-ho-ho-no.

Well, in some cases it’s true—we’ve got peonies, for example, that came with the place and must be decades old—but the very fact that perennials stay in the ground makes them subject to seemingly endless variables, all exacerbated by the seemingly endless microclimates that characterize the region in general and our yard in particular.

I knew going in that some perennials, such as gladioli, are sensitive and must be brought indoors for the winter then reestablished in the spring. So I skipped those. I also knew that some perennials, such as most everything in the mint family, are invasive and must be either contained or planted where they can run amok. So I avoided those, too.

Then went on to plant my favorite species, since our well-established perennials represented a previous homeowner’s taste. Pretty much everything I put in failed within 1-3 years, while the established plants flourished. Huh?

I can divide or transplant the established perennials with shocking brutality and they just keep going like Energizer Bunnies, but my carefully selected, carefully tended new perennials just don’t last. Heck, I’m the only person I’ve ever met who can’t keep daffodils!

Even after I got smart and started planting only Zone 3–hardy specimens (learned from cataloguing everything established and finding that to be the common denominator), I still lose the new ones. Or else they shrink back in number to a few feeble survivors that keep returning enough to keep giving me false hope.

The experience has taught me a lot about the dominance of microclimates over zone maps, the difference between reproductive techniques, and perennial vs. diennial growth patterns. It also clarified the definition of “partial sunlight.” The thing that surprises me year after year, however, is the fact that some perennials move.

It’s a creepy thought that nags at me during the winter. While the land is frozen for months, somewhere below my feet there are tendrils reaching out, or seeds that fell over the summer, which will result in plants emerging somewhere other than where I put them. Thus I’ve had grape hyacinths and glory-of-the-snows pop up in the middle of the lawn. Thus I’ve had a crocus appear even though I never planted one. Thus the horseradish emerged in the woods 30 yards away from its calculated placement, the phlox choked out a complete garden, the lupines stepped sideways two feet, and the bee balm took over the compost pile.

These plants behave, in fact, like certain weeds. Heck, perennials are weeds, if you consider this definition: “What we call a weed is in fact merely a plant growing where we do not want it” (E. J. Salisbury, The Living Garden, 1935). In my yard, some perennials are invasive weeds—like the nightmare phlox, along with lilacs, anything in the rose family, and lily of the valley, which to me is as pernicious as grass. I have come to hate grass, which grows like a metastisizing cancer where you do not want it and refuses to grow where you do.

What this all adds up to is a three-part lesson: (1) Do thorough homework before you plant perennials. (2) Be prepared to monitor them closely and manage them regularly. (3) Make sure you put clumpers in the garden and movers somewhere they can spread.

Else you’ll discover that perennials are actually annuals, because you’ll be reinventing your yard and garden every year!

IntotheSunrise_w9422_300On one day in 1975, Linny Eagan loses her job, her beloved, and her dream of becoming an equestrian champion. So she adjusts her dream to include only horses, since unlike men they can never betray her.

While recovering on Cape Cod, Massachusetts, after a fall in a show, she meets Con Winston, trail leader at a stable. Con dreams of being a cowboy artist on a Montana ranch, but must play family head-games with his father until his twenty-fifth birthday, when he will inherit a fortune that will actualize his dream.

Though Linny needs love and money, she needs independence more. With neither of them willing to abandon their dreams, they continue in opposite directions despite a perfect match of heart and mind. Only Con’s horse connects them, until distance proves that pursuit of a dream needs love to sustain it.

With an ex from hell haunting his dreams, Sotarios Numida can’t catch a break. Thinking a trip to Earth to seek offspring of the Unfortunate One Hundred might clear his head—he thought wrong. Instead, destiny leads him right to the one woman that forces him to face his past and a secret he’s horrified to admit.

Raine Holter is tough, focused, and dealing with a secret of her own. The last thing she expected to find during her usual daily grind was her soulmate. Especially one that can’t seem to make his mind up on whether to grip her close or shove her away. Undaunted, this little spitfire plans to thaw Sotarios’s frozen heart even if hers has to take a few beatings before he sees the truth.

Book 8 in the Fueled By Lust Series yanks you right back into the lives of the sinfully sexy Insedi. One fast paced, jaw dropping, breath stealing, hell of a ride.

If you were to ask the characters in Book 8 of Celeste Prater’s series, Fueled by Lust, how they would describe themselves, I would imagine the above would be Sotarios’ response of himself. His previous mate, Maratinia, had been crazy jealous, homicidal, and abusive. Though their relationship only lasted a few brief months, it felt like he’d endured an eternity of hell. Even beyond the grave, she continued to torture his mind, heart, and soul. Believing he’s damaged beyond all repair, the last thing Sotarios wants is to find another mate. Little does he know, Maratinia isn’t done torturing him just yet.

Raine, on the other hand, would probably describe herself as being up crap creek with a tiny paddle. While her circumstances weren’t due to an abusive ex, she’d unfortunately become the responsible party for her father’s poor choices. After a tragic accident claimed her parent’s lives, the weight of paying off her father’s debts fell on her shoulders. However, Raine wasn’t one to cry over spilled milk. She was resourceful and used skills her father had taught her to tackle this big load as gracefully as she could. While she also wasn’t particularly looking for a new beau, she wouldn’t deny wishing she could find someone and have the relationship her parents did. Despite his poor judgement on business matters, her father had been a good man.

When a chance meeting in the most unlikely places brings Sotarios and Raine together, Sotarios can’t deny the lure of her essence and the attraction of their energies. Telling himself he’s merely concerned for her well being, he elicits the help of one of his warrior brothers, Geleon, and proceeds to follow her after work. Just to make sure she’s okay, of course. After all, she’s an attractive woman who shouldn’t be out after dark on her own. Telling himself he’ll just make sure she makes it home safe and will then move on with his life, he suddenly finds himself getting far too involved when her trip home takes an unexpected detour.

Raine can scarcely catch her breath when Sotarios breezes through the doors to the shop, along with his equally eye-appealing sidekick. Knowing she’s in no position to start a relationship, she tells herself to enjoy the short few minutes of time with the big behemoth that she can, and then get back to reality. After all, what would a hunk like that see in someone like her? He probably had dozens of women throwing themselves at his feet. What she doesn’t expect is that his attention to detail and concern for her wellbeing would not only make her feel all warm and fuzzy, but would also spark a desire deep within to spend as much time with him as she could before he waltzed right back out of her life. She expected that would be the end result, once he learned about her other extracurricular activities.

As always, Ms. Prater has penned an enthralling book of love, desire, and determination, with no small measure of lust added in, for good measure. Oh yes, Ms. Prater does not disappoint in the lust department; there was plenty of that coming from not only the characters, but me as well. Who wouldn’t lust over one of her Insedi warriors? This golden Greek Adonis could surely melt the heart of any female. Yet, beneath that stunning exterior, you’d find the heart of a gentleman, the devotion of a saint, and a love to last forever. Yep, these guys are the perfect men, all rolled into a comely package.

Once I start one of Ms. Prater’s stories, I can hardly put it down. Her characters draw me in from page one and don’t let go until the end. Moreover, once the wonderful tale is over, I always find myself hoping for another. I did note a few editing errors, which really surprised me as I’m usually so engrossed I don’t see anything beyond the characters and the world unfolding around them. It was nothing to detract from the story, and if I weren’t so eager to keep reading, I may have made note to pass along to the author. As it was, they seemed trivial and unimportant in my quest to see what happened next.

Would I recommend this to anyone who loves otherworldly romance? Absolutely, without hesitance. Every one of the Fueled by Lust editions has been wonderful and I will likely read them all again. Several times, in fact. I just wonder; were I ever to meet one of Ms. Prater’s warriors, would he smell smoke or something a whole lot sweeter emanating from me? And if I’ve created a question in your mind on whatever I could possibly mean by that, well then you’ll just have to read Fueled by Lust: Sotarios for yourself to find out. *wink*

One by one, the pieces fall away, exposing their dual deception. After the masks—and the pants—are off, Christian and Jarrod must work together to support a friend… and maybe become something more than strangers.

Christian has been burned before by Carl and believes once again Carl is simply using him for sex – refusing to come out of the closet or acknowledge their relationship. Determined to discover why Carl will not commit, Christian dresses up as a woman and attends a snazzy masquerade ball, needing answers. Jarrod also has his own agenda at the ball and when Christian and Jarrod meet, the sparks really fly.

I’m always a sucker for a Masquerade ball story and I was pleased that this one delivered in spades. There’s a delightful “comedy of errors” style of mix up, and while the meat of the plot is quite sad I feel like the author did an amazing job keeping everything around it – including the characters – lighthearted enough that this didn’t feel to me like a depressed or sad story at all. Christian dressed up as a woman was a real hoot – I laughed in quite a few places with that part – and despite his dejection at Carl’s duplicity I was pleased Christian’s happier nature won out fairly promptly. Jarrod was far more of a mystery until well into the story and this helped add a bit of a tingle for me with the story. He really was a “Stranger In Black” and I enjoyed getting to know him along with Christian.

The sex was deliciously hot and I think most M/M readers should be pleased by the intimacy shared between Jared and Christian. There is a secondary plot revolving around a M/F relationship that isn’t given any erotic details but is more of a sub-plot within the main storyline. I really enjoyed the characters – even Carl – and have to commend the author on making them all really shine.

A steamy, fun story that I found easy and interesting to read.

Working for Innoviro Industries, Irina is drawn in by a powerful first love and compelling, yet dangerous questions about the nature of the company’s business. Meeting other ‘variants’ brings Irina closer and closer to the dark truth about her origins. She finds herself at the heart of two overlapping love triangles as she scrambles to escape her employer’s grip. Before she leaves the city, Irina realizes she has merely scratched the surface of a frightening conspiracy on a global scale.

I thoroughly enjoyed In Irina’s Cards, the first book in the Variant Conspiracy series, in which we are introduced to Irina and find out, along with her, that her life may not be exactly as she thinks it is. She begins having strange visions after purchasing a deck of old Tarot cards and – out of character for her (she’s not exactly the adventuresome type)—packs up her backpack and sets off to discover the meaning of them.

The story is told from Irina’s POV so the reader can take the journey along with her and discover as well the mystery behind Innoviro. We bond with other variants on the journey and enjoy the feeling of being part of a larger group.

I really like the character of Irina—once she gets out and gets on her own (even if the way is paved for her by Innoviro) she really begins to come into her own. We get to see her grow up a bit.

The story is well-written (there was one minor issue at the beginning that took me out of the story a little where a key became a key card, but that was the only bobble I can remember). I was sucked into the story and stayed up way too late reading it because I had to know what happened next.

Because this is the first in the series, do not expect a clear cut ending—there is a bit of a cliffhanger that leads you into book two—which I will be starting this weekend! The third book in the series is being released soon and I want to make sure I’m caught up!

Getting to know Sister Agatha was delightful. I admired her intelligence and resourcefulness, but what really made me like her was her uncanny ability to reveal something new about herself just when I thought I had her all figured out. There were so many cleverly-hidden parts of her personality to discover that I wished her tale would never end so that I could keep learning more and more about her.

This book had a slow beginning. It took me a long time to get into the storyline because of how little was happening to move the plot forward. A big part of the reason why it moved so slowly was because the narrator kept flashing back to things that happened when Sister Agatha was growing up. While I found those scenes interesting, having so many of them did make it hard for me to stay focused on the mystery itself due to how little time the characters spent on it in the first several chapters.

The dialogue in this story was lively. Some of my favorite scenes to read were the ones where two or more characters had in-depth conversations about what was happening around them. Every character had an unique voice and something important to share with the audience. Listening to them talk to each other gave me many opportunities to guess what was going on and what might happen next, so I enjoyed every minute of their discussions.

Sister Agatha: The World’s Oldest Serial Killer should be read by anyone who is on the lookout for something completely unexpected.

Dan’s terrified he can’t save Justine or the child she carries. And though he is not afraid to do whatever it takes to get Justine back, can he do it and keep safe the secret he’s kept for the last decade? Or will his past destroy them both?

This book is an awesome adventure of suspense and as the title states its truly a twist of betrayal. Justine Franklin a Public Defender has been seemingly happily married to police officer Dan Franklin for six years. The majority of the time any bad deed done in our past will surely catch up with us. Dan is a man that can vouch for this. The book opens with the couple having a heated disagreement prompting Justine to leave the house in anger. Her decision to go to the grocery store is timed with the grocery store robbery. Unfortunately Justine is kidnapped. Will Dan be able to save his wife and still keep his unlawful past a secret?

From the very beginning this book had my attention. To discover early on that the kidnappers know Justine personally only made my suspense greater. The timely flash backs give a back story of Justine and Dan’s past and also adds dimension to the storyline. The author timed the flashbacks at the appropriate time and gave enough suspense to keep me entertained and still had my interest on how the story would unfold. True enough I had a feeling that Justine would be saved, but boy were there many twists that the author complied to make this a book that I enjoyed and would recommend to any reader that is looking for a good suspenseful read.

I enjoyed the writing style. How the novel flowed was perfect. The plot was told with true talent. This is a book that you can’t judge by the cover. The blurb is interesting enough but the cover lead me to think the context would be something totally different.

The bad guys were truly bad. They devised a plan and I guess with all bad intentions they thought they would actually get away with it. Dan is a man of determination. He is a strong officer with attractive features. A man that is adamant on upholding the law and has a deep concern about public safety. He was a favorable character to read about. He is a man with faults but inspire to do right. Justine is a professional woman and as with any relationship she balances work and marriage as best she can. With the turn of events of an unexpected pregnancy and the kidnapping Dan and Justine’s marriage is put to the test. This is a well written, well thought out story a reader of suspense and action wouldn’t want to miss out on.

Books in Season: Summer – M Pepper Langlinais

I’ve always felt that books, like movies, have a season. For summer, I prefer lighter fare, the stuff I can speed through, the “popcorn” of books. If I want a mystery, I’ll reach for Agatha Christie (John Le Carré is strictly fall/winter reading). If I want a thriller it had better be Michael Crichton or Tom Clancy or some similarly plot-driven tome. And I have a very particular memory of reading The Godfather while in Cancun one June. I also very much enjoy indulging in Ben Aaronovitch’s Peter Grant series while sitting outside on my chaise lounge.

My sense of books having seasons began with my father who each fall would pick up The Hobbit and read it and The Lord of the Rings trilogy over winter. Then in the summer he would return to things like Stephen King or the Conan the Barbarian novels. On summer nights we would sit out on the deck together, and Dad would set up the telescope so we could search for planets. And while we did that, Dad would tell me the stories from his books. I first learned of Bilbo and Frodo and Galadriel—oh, how I was obsessed with her power and beauty!—from my dad’s oral history, and I first heard the terrifying story of the rabid dog Cujo that way, too. (I still have never read Cujo, though I’ve enjoyed many Stephen King stories since.)

One particular night when I was in fifth grade, Dad told me a mesmerizing story of time traveling Nazis and later slipped me his copy of Dean Koontz’s Lightning with the caution, “Don’t let your mother catch you with this.”

My parents were both readers, my mother leaning more toward torrid romance until the day she decided it was too sinful and she switched to what would be called “sweet” romances now. I did eventually develop my own taste for Regency romances, and those are also good summer reads, or most of them anyway. The Christmas ones are better for the holidays, naturally. Victoria Holt, however, is fine summer fare, as is Jane Austen.

In truth, summer books really are like summer movies. They move fast and don’t require too much work on the part of the reader (or viewer). Just like summer itself slipping past at an impossible speed, the long days getting shorter, the darkness closing in so slowly we pretend it will never come, summer books fly by like pages ruffled in a stiff breeze. And that breeze grows just a little bit cooler, day by day, as we rotate toward autumn. So enjoy summer now, and the books that go with it. Because there’s almost nothing worse than picking up a book and realizing it’s out of season and you can’t read it yet.*

*Of course you can read a book any time. I realize that. But, at least for me, the mood has to be right. Ripe. Hence my sense of books having a season.

Jace Sterling works hard and plays harder, especially where it concerns the opposite sex. Women are his weakness, and he doesn’t try to express self-control when it comes to getting what he wants. But then he sees Lexi, a woman much younger than he is, and she has his full attention. He knows he just has to have her.

Lexi has wanted Jace since she was younger, but he’s over a decade older than she is and has never given her a second glance. When she returns to town after college and runs into the Sterling brother, the feelings she thought she’d buried come rushing back.

When a minor car accident puts Jace and Lexi back into each other’s lives, Jace knows he won’t walk away again, not when Lexi is the first woman to spark more than arousal in him. Everything he thought he knew about himself gets turned upside down where it concerns Lexi.

Can one young woman tame a notorious Sterling brother?

All Jace wanted to do was finish his day, head into town for some drinks and find a hot woman to spend the night with. His eldest brother might be settled down with a woman now, but that didn’t mean Jace intended to slow his partying ways down any. Then he met Lexie, and Jace finally realised what had been missing from his life.

I found this to be an interesting, rough-and-tumble style Cowboy story. I was a little surprised in the beginning just how cynical and rude Jace’s thoughts were. Wanting to head down to the local bar and only interested in “getting pussy” or how knew Lexie was braless by “the way her tits shook” when she moved. Sure, this is an erotic romance and I expect my sex to be graphic and steamy, but there’s certainly a line between keeping the bedroom door open, having plenty of dirty language/swearing in a story – and feeling as if the hero didn’t value or particularly respect women. I was nervous in those first few chapters that maybe I’d find Jace quite distasteful as a character. While Jace’s character (and manners) didn’t mellow much once he met up again with Lexie, his lust and attraction to her were strong enough that he was faithful in his trying to tie her down. And this made the rest of his actions somewhat easier for me to come to grips with.

Readers looking for any pretense of romance might be disappointed with this story. For almost the whole book Lexie fully expects to only have a few nights with Jace before he moves on – Lexie has no illusions about Jace’s history and sexual prowess. Similarly, while Jace seems more willing to accept Lexie was special and different to him, I found many of his actions and especially his constant heavy talk made it difficult to see him as romantic or regular hero-like in the usual sense.

On the other hand, readers just wanting a hot, hard, enthusiastic story about two consenting adults fucking hard and full of lust for each other should be pleased with getting exactly that. There’s no real plot to speak of – but in this shorter-length story the relationship between Jace and Lexie *is* the plot. Lexie absolutely owns her own sexuality – quite prepared to admit to herself she’d had a crush on Jace since she was twelve and seeing him as some sort of pinnacle of sexual prowess. I was really pleased when Lexie and Jace didn’t hook up immediately upon reconnecting – Lexie didn’t ditch the group of girlfriends she’d arrived at the bar with and that really impressed me. Girls who ditch their friends for a quick bit of sex are a pet peeve of mine. Waiting just that short length of time also helped build some of the sexual tension between Lexie and Jace – and made the chemistry between them even hotter to my mind.

The sex was deliciously hot and I really enjoyed it. There was plenty of dirty talk, though I didn’t think there was anything particularly kinky or outrageous about the sex itself. Both Jace and Lexie though had wonderfully dirty mouths and that helped put a bit of zing into the scene for me. A good, steamy sex scene which I found was an excellent culmination to Jace and Lexie slowly circling each other for much of the story. I have to admit I didn’t find the ending very realistic and this made me wince a little with how it felt a cliché. I felt it was extremely strange for both Lexie and Jace to have such a complete about-face right in the last few pages. Personally I would have been deeply satisfied with a Happy For Now style of ending – that would have suited the characters and where they’d come from far better to my mind – but the die-hard romantic in me just couldn’t argue with any Happy Ever After, no matter how unrealistic it might have felt.

I found this to be a good, quick read with some excellent sex and a different style of character. Not your average Cowboy romance but still a lot of fun.

My name is Zoey Major and I live in Fort Star, New Jersey. I am also a survivor in the zombie apocalypse. Seems very cut and dry but I have been hiding something- like really huge. My secret is game changing. I am not like the others… I know, what a surprise twist! Unfortunately, I can’t tell you why I am different. If you really want to know, you have to figure it out. Hey, even in these dark times, a girl needs her secrets.

This is an interesting story and told in a unique-to-me format – what the author calls diary/play format. It’s set after a zombie virus outbreak has devastated the USA and created zones. The main character, Zoey Major, has a secret that makes it possible for her to venture out away from the fort to gather the materials needed for her soap and fragrance business—as well as help keep an eye on the strength of the fortification and bring in any stray humans she finds.

The diary/play format is just that. The narration is written in first person from Zoey’s POV and the dialogue is written in play format, ie:
If the patient is still not reaching his desired results he should consider discussing a possible change in dosage with his doctor. http://davidfraymusic.com/events/ravenna-festival-ravenna-italy/ purchase cheap levitra is a treatment and is usually carried out in outpatient center. Zoey: “But -”
Catey: “I said take the damn shot.”
Zoey: “Fine.”

This might be off-putting to some readers. As a format, I got used to it quickly, but I also have a background in drama and have been known to read plays for pleasure. The main issue with this format is that it is like reading a play. Typically when reading a book, the reader wants to feel a deep connection with the characters, she wants to get into their heads and feel what they are feeling. With the play format, the reader is removed from that. Even with the narration being in Zoey’s POV, I never really connected with her on a deep level.

There was also an editing issue—several words that were misspelled (for example, vile instead of vial: Killian was sitting on the bed with a vile in his hand.) and many cases where the phrasing was awkward. The book would have benefited greatly by a professional editor looking it over.

The story line itself, though, was very interesting. I could really see this as a made-for-TV movie—it would be fascinating to watch the dichotomy between their “now” and “then”. Zoey is very much a patriot of the times—no matter what, she holds on to the belief that one day, the USA will be reunited and will heal itself after what it’s been through. Even though it is illegal in that time to do so, her living space is awash with patriotic memorabilia that she adds to whenever she finds something new “outside.”

I would be interested in reading more of the author’s works in another format. She has a good imagination and the plot of the book was compelling.

Summer, 1956. With her parents away and her boyfriend abroad, Rennie is on her own. To make money for college, she takes a job as a recreational therapist in a large mental hospital in New York City, despite her reluctance to sign a loyalty oath in the charged times of McCarthyism. She has no relevant experience, but she’s good at sports. How hard can it be? Very hard, she discovers.

As Rennie struggles to relate to the confused, emotionally unpredictable women and challenging hospital administrators and staff, she is befriended by a troubled young man with a passion for jazz, meets a wise Middle Eastern restaurateur, and after an accident on her motor scooter, becomes three construction workers favorite “damsel in distress.”

Too stubborn to quit, Rennie finds meaningful ways to connect with her patients and creates previously unimagined opportunities for them. She also discovers a new, stronger part of herself. By summer’s end, no longer dependent on other’s opinions, she can listen to her heart and conscience and make crucial changes in her own life.

Opening Gates is story from which I got more than I bargained for. It is coming of age story that covers some pretty serious issues like gender equality, mental illness and life in USA in late 1950s.

The main character, and also the narrator, is 19 year-old Rennie Weinstein. Rennie is college student who decides to apply for a summer job in a mental hospital in New York as a recreational therapist, because it pays well. She thought that her job would be relatively easy one, but as soon as she enters the hospital she realizes that it a whole unknown world lies there, a world that has rules of its own which are almost impossible to change. But slowly, with hard determination, and a strong will, Rennie starts to change some rules. Also her different and human approach to patients starts to change the life of women in the mental hospital.

Opening Gates is not an easy read, not just because it deals with mental illness, but because there is so much injustice in this story. The treatment of women in the hospital is often very tenacious and inflexible. The patients are perceived as things or as trouble makers and people who want to help them or make their life a bit better are restricted by so many written and unwritten rules. There are few scenes that are harsh, but I believe that they also picture realistic treatments of the patients in the mental institution at that time. The author does not go into a private stories of the women in the hospital, because her focus is on the main character and the changes Rennie goes through during her summer work, but on the other hand she is describing the atmosphere, sights, and smells so well.

This is a story worth reading because it provides a genuine insight into a mental institution in 1950s. The message of the story: “the little things go a long way”, resonated to me for a long time after I finished the book.
