When her husband ran off with a perky, much younger woman, Regina Cox got the house, a decrepit car, and her freedom. Divorced, she plans to remain man-free and focus on her career as a writer. Trouble is, the skinny boy next door who used to tease her about her braces is now a handsome hunk and features as the hero in her latest romance novel.

But when he learns she writes erotica romance and is having trouble getting the research right, he offers a week-long tutorial that’s bound to teach them both a few things.

Regina can’t refuse all the research she could ask for and no strings sex on top. And with the sassy sub, Tucker soon discovers the pleasure that comes when the topper is topped.

Regina might have a dozen books under her belt, but she’s coming up dry when it comes to writing a fun, sexy little Valentine’s Day novella. Deleting bad sex scene after bad sex scene, her spirits are getting low. Worse, she’s now arguing with her fictional hero – a Dominant, Jake – and his high standards and refusal to work with any of the submissives Regina writes is making her crazy. When she takes a break she notices her next door neighbor – Tucker, the physical model for her written hero – hard at work. Sweaty muscles, delicious ass. But when a stray wind tossed some pages of her notes – notes on Dom/sub relationships! – over the fence and into Tucker’s orbit, Regina won’t be able to say no when Tucker offers some very real, up-close research advice.

I thoroughly enjoyed this romantic short story. Drop your brain at the door, switch off any semblance of realism and indulge in this fun, kinky, hot story. I loved Regina’s chattering to Jake-the-romance-hero, and I was delighted when Tucker offered to teach Regina a few truths about his sexual tastes as a Dom. Tucker and Regina have a whole boat-load of chemistry and a sizzling lust between them burns brightly. I loved how Regina’s “research” for her story might have been the opening they needed to get together, but very quickly they both accepted that far, far more was on the table and they both wanted, needed a relationship.

There is some seriously hot sex between them. A fair bit of light bondage play – spanking, toys and restraints – but nothing that I found outrageous or offensive. Indeed I loved how they could both be so sexy and into each other in the bedroom, but not let it effect them outside too much. Tucker wasn’t some alpha macho man who needed Regina to bow to his every whim – their light kink stayed inside the bedroom and I enjoyed watching how it lent them intimacy and trust outside in the rest of their life. This was quite refreshing to see – how they could each be their own person outside but still forge a relationship together, one where they each were fulfilled and had exactly what they needed.

A fun, sexy, steamy read that left me feeling very happy and satisfied.

Another life-altering quest, another struggle between honor and lust for power, another generation of warriors forging alliances and enmities. Seventeen years after the legendary fighter Mubai dies protecting the world-conquering sword The Green Destiny, four great warriors are called together to guard the formidable weapon once more. The forces surrounding the sword irrevocably altered the life of Shulien, Mubai’s lover, but seventeen years later she is still honor-bound to defend the blade from the power-hungry warlord Hades Dai. The young fighters Wei-fang and Snow Vase, switched at birth, also have heritages and inheritances that inextricably link them to both each other and the fate of the sword. And Silent Wolf, Shulien’s former fiancé, returns from presumed death to thwart Hades Dai—and rekindle an emotionally isolated Shulien’s feelings.

Jam-packed with all the hallmarks of an epic adventure—sacrifice, battles, betrayal, vengeance, redemption, and destiny—this saga also explores the deeper meaning of true heroism and virtue. As Wei-fang and Snow Vase search for identity and forge their places in the world of warriors and heroes, Shu-lien and Silent Wolf struggle to reconcile both the traditions and heartbreak of the past with a fragile hope for the future.

Seventeen years have passed since Shulien last set foot in the world at large. Much has changed since then, but even more has stayed irrevocably the same. The lust for power as it battles against honor is an eternal war about to reignite with a group of new, young warriors hungry for fame and honor.

Shulien is a holdover from the first novel and she was by far my favorite. Her way of looking at things was different than anything I’d ever encountered before. She placed herself into exile only to be dragged out into the thick of it, just like any heroine would be in a time of crisis. She handles her forced return to society well, even if she can be a touch cranky at times.

The would-be pairing of Snow Vase and Wei-Fang is an old story, one that we’re all familiar with. They’re on different sides of the battle and yet, are drawn to one another. At first, Snow Vase really got on my nerves. But as I came to understand all she was putting at risk and the mother she was trying to make proud, it all seemed to make sense. Also, once she meets Shulien and later, Wei-Fang, she becomes a more well-rounded character. Wei-Fang is a typical boy. All he wants is to be a great warrior and almost immediately gets himself into trouble because of it. They make one of the best matched couples I’ve seen lately.

Having never read or seen Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, this novel was a new experience for me. Although not my usual reading fare, I found the characters interesting and the story full of action and adventure. I always tend to enjoy novels that visit the next generation, bring the past into the new chapter. The sword play was so well written that even someone unknowledgeable in such arts was easily able to imagine the flow of metal and bodies as the opponents fought. An intriguing and fascinating look at life in a long ago world.

Had a stressful day? Had enough drama for a while? Then The Greek’s Nine-Month Surprise is the perfect book to kickback with and relax. This is a comfortable, sweet and well-told romance that is soothing and can make a reader happy because the HEA is so full of love.

I kept waiting for something harsh, sour or some other kind of manufactured conflict to heighten the tension but I never got it. This novel does have a conflict but it’s mostly internal, emotional and familial. There is passion between the two main characters of Niko and Sofia, but the author focused on their getting to know each other, and of Niko trying every way he could think of to seduce Sofia into saying ‘yes’ to marrying him. He has a few flops along the way. Niko’s got a lot to learn about being a well-rounded human being and I enjoyed Sofia teaching him in the only way she knew how – by being herself.

This is classic romance and quite entertaining. There were some dialogue gems sprinkled throughout that enhanced the story’s ability to grab my attention and keep it, and allowed me to connect with the hero and heroine.

I think the most poignant element was watching Niko discover his heritage, his family and how much his grandfather truly loved him. That was the strongest scene in the whole novel because it really tugged on my emotions.

The Greek’s Nine-Month Surprise is definitely worth a look. It has heart, it’s simple and it’s a pleasant, pleasing read. I’m happy I read it.

When Samantha Ingalls checks into the Fantasy Suite at the exclusive Fini Luxury Resort & Spa near Aspen, Colorado, she is struggling to get over a painful divorce. All she wants is to hide away and be pampered at the five-star hotel. What she doesn’t expect is a gorgeous, charming gigolo who knows exactly how to make her wildest fantasies come true.

Frisco Thorne has spent the last few years focused on work. After another failed relationship, he decides to make a dramatic lifestyle change. Being a gigolo is every man’s secret fantasy…lots of sex and no responsibilities.

Samantha and Frisco don’t fight the strong attraction that starts in the elevator and barely makes it to the bedroom. For the rest of the weekend, they explore every inch of each other’s bodies and delight in discovering new ways to create sexual pleasure. They make sure they make enough memories to last a lifetime, since there’s no future for them outside the Fantasy Suite…or is there?

A whirlwind marriage ends in a whirlwind divorce, so Samantha heads to the hills of Colorado to find some peace and make a plan for life after a loveless marriage. A few nights in the Fantasy Suite of an exclusive hideaway with a man who more than knows his way around a woman’s body is just what the doctor ordered.

And apparently the doctor ordered lots of sex. When Samantha decides to give into Frisco’s charm, it’s no holds barred. She needs the boost to her self esteem and Frisco is just the gigolo to give her enough boosts to last a good long time.

I was curious, though, the way he spoke to her and the time he spent with her, it didn’t seem like just a paid companion kind of weekend. He’s very personal and I could feel a bond forming between them so all the sex didn’t just feel like sex, it felt like a beginning. But…he’s a gigolo, he professionally dates lots of women.

I couldn’t wait to see how the author worked it out. Talk about your slick twist endings, this one was good! Very satisfying and seriously made me want to re-read the whole story to catch the subtle clues. Since the story is told in first person from Samantha’s POV, the unexpected ending made more sense. The surprise wouldn’t have been there if I had known Frisco’s thoughts and motivations.

The resort Samantha goes to is really fascinating as well. I hope Ms. Clark writes additional stories set around the amazing and super hospitable Fini. Between the super sexy owner, Blake, the clever Aussie masseuse, Erika, Joshua the bartender, and the rest of the staff, plus all the visitors, there’s plenty of new stories still to be told.

Fini may be where people go when their loves lives end in heartbreak but it’s also the place for new beginnings and this is one reader who hopes that this is the beginning of a new and exciting new series. An easy recommend.

Winter is hard in Beauville, where the melting snow can reveal much more than last season s dead leaves. So when a wealthy, obnoxious tourist and his ski bunny girlfriend surface in Pru Marlowe s little Berkshire town, she knows she should stay out of their way. The bad-girl animal psychic has to focus on more immediate concerns, including a wild rabbit named Henry, supposedly tamed and illegally living with an eighty-four-year-old lady in her home. Henry, who seems to be acting out and hiding, avoids responding to Pru. Yet when Pru discovers the tourist murdered and his girlfriend s high-maintenance spaniel falls to her care, she gets dragged into a complicated case of crime and punishment that involves some new friends, an old nemesis, and her own shadowed past. A recent museum art heist draws the feds into the investigation along with a courtly gentleman radiating menace, who represents secretive business interests in New York and shows a surprising awareness of Pru. Her on-again, off-again romance with police Detective Creighton doesn t stop him from warning her to steer clear of the inquiry. The spaniel, however, lures her in. Pru lives in a world where only her crotchety tabby Wallis knows the whole truth about her past, her flight from Manhattan, and her unique gift that surfaced abruptly one day. Fearing the worst, Pru now comes dangerously close to being exposed. With everything in motion, Pru, Wallis, and everyone they hold dear will be lucky to escape by a hare.”

Despite almost having her degree as an animal behaviorist, Pru Marlowe still struggles to make ends meet. By taking odd jobs walking dogs and helping out around the town, she finds a way to keep herself – and her cat, Wallis – fed and happy. She knows Wallis is happy too, and not just by the tabby’s contented purr. No, Pru has a limited psychic connection with animals of all varieties, which makes her day to day jobs both more difficult and more entertaining. So, when she stumbles across a murdered tourist, it’s only natural she’s going to enlist the aid of the critters all around her.

This was my first Pru Marlowe novel and I can safely say it won’t be my last. Although Pru herself is pretty problematic – she has a million and one personal issues – she’s also kind hearted, intelligent, and loyal. The relationship she has with her cat, Wallis, cracked me up because it reminded me so much of how I interact with my own feline. But the way she conducts herself around other animals’ people is probably her greatest strength. Even when the humans don’t deserve it, she’s polite and straightforward for the sake of the animals she cares for.

Some of the best characters in this novel were the animals. Wallis, Pru’s tabby cat, is a constant source of disdain and entertainment since he serves as Pru’s main confidante. Growler, a dog she walks regularly for a rather unpleasant woman, gives her great insights into what other animals might do and think in certain situations. He’s actually one of my favorite characters in this story because he’s such a gossip, giving Pru a running commentary on the neighborhood animal’s activities every walk. Stewie is a little spaniel who is wrapped up in the murder mystery and all he wants is to go back to his person, and you never really know for sure who that is, until the very end.

Cozy mysteries are one of my favorite genres to read. Adding animals and a touch of the paranormal to it only makes it more fun, as far as I’m concerned. Clea Simon does an excellent job of mixing humor, romance, and mystery into one coherent and exciting tale. The humans are engaging and fun, but the non-human characters are even more so. That the author was able to infuse so much personality into animals that really have no voice – as sometimes all Pru can get from them is a vague sense of their emotions – really amazed me. I’ve already purchased the first book in this series because I can’t wait to start at the beginning and discover how this all started.

This is the second novel in the “More” series of dystopian thrillers set in the Second Great Depression in NYC. More and Santiago’s new unit is now detailed to the NYPD’s most elite division to investigate the brutal mob killing of a high-profile hedge fund founder. Their team is also assigned its first Federal, and female, member (whom More and Santiago instantly dislike) from a financial-crimes division of the Treasury Department. Tensions immediately escalate when the team discovers the victim’s underling is on the run with an encrypted computer drive containing information sensitive enough to draw in an array of international hit men who commence a deadly manhunt through the city. The case leads to a horrific terror plot against the city’s buses in order to create a stock market crash for the benefit of the criminal mastermind who created the encrypted drive. More is turned on the loose in full combat mode over Santiago’s objections and brings a taste of Afghanistan to New York City.

Seven months after the disappearance of Everett “Ever” More, Detective Second Grade Sixto Santiago is still desk-bound and waiting to be released into active duty. Left to clean up the mess More left behind him, Santiago has been putting his nose to the grind, studying for the sergeant’s exam. He’s finally beginning to accept desk duty, learning to cope with all the chaos that More had wrecked, when a woman from the Treasury department arrives… and Everett More isn’t far behind.

Santiago remains my favorite hard-pressed detective. The things that More puts him through make you want to jump into the book and take the Marine by the throat, just to help Santiago out some. That he hasn’t drawn his gun on his sometimes partner only proves that Santiago has the patience of a saint, even if it does falter now and again. He’s not perfect though, not by a long shot, but he is real and, in this fictional, devastated New York City, he’s exactly the kind of cop they need on the streets.

More is an enigma. He’s also an extremely frightening individual. Having seen combat in Afghanistan, he’s a trained soldier with very little to lose, and he makes sure everyone around him knows it. Despite that, there’s something intriguing and even a little bit endearing to his character. Maybe it’s that Santiago puts up with him so well or maybe it’s something else, but I was happy to see him reappear in this novel. Although, I’m pretty sure Santiago would have my head for even thinking that. Despite their differences and animosity towards each other, they really do make a good team, one that gets things done and done well.

The Big Dogs brings the same kind of intensity and excitement that you found in Rivers of Gold. Santiago is growing as a character and becoming more able to deal with the force that is known as Ever More. Although the author still goes overboard with the technical details, the mystery and action are as good as ever. The author brings a bleak and interesting look to a New York City we’ll hopefully never know, but one that is fitting for two men like More and Santiago.

For one, it’s more realistic than most romances where things are seen through rose-tinted glasses and everything is perfect. I loved that. Second, there are three men in this story. They’re not together at the same time, though, so no threesomes here. (Well, one threesome, but it’s between two men and one woman, and it’s non-consensual, so be forewarned.) Third, a lot of time passes in this story, and I mean years. There are no traditional dates here, but mostly work trips and vacations. Some relationships come to life this way, so it was great to see a change from the typical tropes.

Roger is the constant in the story. We only get his point of view, though in third person. His love for Johnny and later for Brad deals more with Roger learning who he is and adjusting to it than a standard romance. Don’t get me wrong, since we get a lot of sex. But they’re more about the men learning truths about themselves than the excitement of two men together. In fact, Roger isn’t described as a gay man coming to that realization. He seems to be more pansexual, attracted to a specific person rather than a gender. I’ve rarely seen that aspect of orientation shown so well.

Since we only get Roger’s POV, Johnny and Brad come off a bit more as caricatures rather than real three-dimensional men. Not all the time, mind you, but occasionally. What was well done, in my honest opinion, was the friendship these men formed before growing into their feelings. That was nice. The story doesn’t delve very deeply into Native American cultural heritage but we do learn a few new things. I did at least. I’m not sure how well it’ll be received, though, that Johnny and Brad are both described as Indians. That threw me a bit. I thought that word was a no-no….

Johnny, as the titular character, comes off clearer, his first stumbling into a sexual life shown well. His shyness and awkwardness, his laconic way of being, his slowly opening personality—it was all wonderful to read. He’s such a sweetheart you naturally feel for him. In contrast, Brad is less clear, much of his self-explorations done off-camera, so to speak, since we’re not given his point of view. Therefore his actions and inactions seemed to take place in a kind of a vacuum. Later he explains how he came to act the way he did but at the time it was all a mystery.

Roger’s character confused me. Mostly because he often referred to himself as old or old-fashioned or having old ways, etc. When much later in the book it turns out he’s only thirty-three, I was flummoxed. From all the self-descriptions, I expected him to be in his late forties or early fifties. Since when is a man in his thirties old? The way he thought of himself as old didn’t match his age. I think that was the author speaking, not the character himself. And that was disappointing.

None of the above poses a major problem, however. Why? Because if you’re seeking a story that makes you feel, then this is for you. I cried on several occasions, and laughed aloud at a couple of others. Like Johnny, Wildyr has a laconic way of writing, focusing more on actions taken and the changes within a person than on labels or defining feelings. That was nice because it felt like the storyline happened organically in a natural progression, giving this a strong foundation of realism.

So, while not a traditional sort of romance, if you’re searching for something that is firmly grounded in realism, then this is for you. Yes, there are the occasional sex-with-women scenes, but they’re done short or off-screen. Remember, this is these men’s journey into self-discovery more than a happy-ever-after romance. This was my first book by Wildyr but won’t be the last.

In “Damned If You Do,” a man named John has started seeing a therapist in order to untangle his troubled home life. The problem is that he really doesn’t seem to want to revisit the past and figure out why he’s ended up in such a difficult situation with his wife. I was fascinated by the idea of a protagonist who is incredibly reluctant to allow the audience into even the smallest corner of his mind, and I only became more intrigued by John’s backstory as the plot progressed. The ending caught me by surprise in a good way!

While I enjoyed all of the stories in this anthology, there were a few that could have used little more polishing before being published. “St. Thomas of El Paso” was a good example of this. The plot followed a young man named Thomas who was kicked out of the orphanage where he was being raised when the priest running it discovered that the boy was gay. I was enthralled with the main character’s struggle to survive on his own as a teenager and young adult, especially once strange things began to happen in the small towns near his home. The ending felt rushed when I compared it to the beginning and middle, though. I would have really liked to see the narrator slow down and dig into the conflicts that had originally drawn me into the plot. There was a lot of material in there that wasn’t given as much room to grow as it needed.

What I appreciated the most about “Bone Wary” was how much time the narrator, Henry, took to describe his art studio and home to the audience. All of those details not only made me curious to find out why Henry spent so much time explaining them, they also paid off handsomely once I realized what his dark secret to all of his success was. This is the kind of tale that requires some legwork from the audience in order to understand what’s going on, but it’s well worth the effort.

Tales from the Lake Vol. 2 was a rewarding read. I’d heartily recommend it to any fellow fans of scary science fiction.

Why is it that what we don’t have can overshadow what we do? Where We Fall is a poetic in-depth voice of a family that began because of a secret. The descriptive writing style will pull a reader into the personal mental battle of Abby Holden. The story pretty much focuses on where 38-year-old Abby falls and how she must address and confront her past to get back to living.

Abby’s depression held her and her family hostage from achieving true family happiness. The depression put a wedge between Abby and her teenage daughter Juliana and made her dedicated husband pretty much a single father. The plot is one that will hopefully catch the reader from the very beginning and with the writer’s talent for story telling as well as building the suspense it should also keep the reader entertained.

I enjoyed the story and how it was delivered. This was a story that made me think and wonder… could things have been handled differently? When all the secrets were revealed it brought about a question of what could the characters do now? The past laid heavily on Abby’s heart but was she entirely the one to blame? Her best friend and Ryan’s college girlfriend, Lauren, is the one that place the pieces in position but when events turn out not to be in Lauren’s favor she decided to keep on her personal path to travel the world chasing waterfalls.

I enjoyed the book and would recommend it but I did have one problem with the plot. I liked the story idea of the battle with mental illness but the rooted reason for Abby’s descent really didn’t seem to be a reason to make her marriage and relationship with her daughter suffer. No, she couldn’t have won the best friend award but if the love between Ryan and Lauren was so deep and connected why did Lauren chance leaving in the first place? Then she returns many years later with the same love for Ryan in her heart and disappointment and hurt for Abby. Lauren left; did she think Ryan would put his life on hold until she finished living?

Ryan was my favorite character because he is a man that is dedicated to family and the young boys on his football team. He is the one that seemed to have it together. I didn’t like Lauren because she seemed to be lost and not know what she wanted when she was younger and now that she is older she is under the assumption that she still loves Ryan, but people change. Lauren is more naive now than she was when she left after graduating college. Juliana, Abby’s daughter seemed immature or either spoiled. In her forbidden relationship with football player E.J., she was pushy to have relations with him and in regards to her mother she didn’t seem to understand that her mother needed help.

This may not be a happy read.  In fact it has a desolate flow but the ending made the book worth reading.

One wrong turn in a Montana blizzard leads Cara to the love she had only dreamed about.

Just one of the reasons I enjoy picking up a book by Kaitlin Maitland is that she writes the romantic knight in shining armor rides to the rescue kind of stories that women dream about. They may seem a little convenient and fantastic but that’s part of the appeal. How amazing would it be to be rescued by a gorgeous cowboy on horseback in a snowstorm, be taken back to his cabin and have the most incredible night of your life…and that not be the end of the story?

The second thing I can count on from Ms. Maitland is that the sex is going to be scorching hot! That first scene in front of the huge fireplace was incendiary! That’s only one of many, many scenes. I also loved the scene where Cara arrives back at the ranch. She and Royce see each other for the first time after having been apart. Talk about a happy reunion.

The characters were good. Like Royce, Cara comes from a wealthy family that has expectations. I think having common backgrounds made them more believable as a couple. They have lots of sexual chemistry but it was good to see that they were able to connect on other levels as well.

The story flows pretty smoothly and the author has a good grasp on families. I was curious about Royce’s mother, though. To have so much love in her family, that’s one unhappy woman. There’s an epilogue that ties a pretty bow on Royce and Cara’s future but it doesn’t give any indication of his mother ever reconciling herself to his choice.

Readers looking for a hot holiday story on a cold night should give this book and this author a try. If dreams really do come true, Ms. Maitland knows how to put it in story form. Very enjoyable!
