Little Red Riding Hood’s life has become a boring cycle and she finds herself wanting more. Her wish is granted when she runs into the Big Bad Wolf, Max, while walking through the woods to her grandmother’s house. The secret is, Red’s got a wolf of her own, and her father is the Alpha of the local pack.

Instead of fearing Max, Red finds herself unbelievably attracted to the rugged, unknown man. The chemistry between them is undeniable. Claws and teeth quickly become lips and groping hands. The only problem with her wild, newly budding romance is that her pack is on the hunt for a feral wolf, and Max is in her father’s territory uninvited. Can Red prove to the pack that Max isn’t the danger they think, or will their romance go down in flames?

This wolf has some teeth…

Red is weary of always being under her father’s shadow. No other man or wolf measures up and she sure isn’t going to date the man her father has entrusted his loyalty to. But Hank is kind of a jerk and no way is she going to even consider it. What’s a girl to do? So when she is waylaid in the forest by a sexy wolf with a whole lot of alpha going on, she lets him get past all of her …um…defenses.

Max is an alpha male on hiatus from his own pack. The leader had some issues with his brand of strength. Not aware of another pack so close by, he is surprised by the sexy redheaded vixen that he happens upon in the woods. After he beds her, he finds out she is the pack alpha’s daughter. Not a good combination. Power, politics and a moral code made what happened between them not okay.

Tensions ratchet up and Red has to decide what she wants and what she is willing to do to get it. Max will fight for the woman he wants to spend his life with, but will the two ever have that chance?

This story had a lot going for it.The heroine had sass and wasn’t afraid to go after the man she wanted, despite having to buck the system. She is the wolf here, and not just a weak victim waiting to be taken advantage of. That was good. I always enjoy twists on a familiar fairy tale and this one lends itself to some steamy scenes in the great outdoors with the ever present threat of someone lurking just out of sight. Shivery and sexy all at the same time.

It wasn’t all great, though. There were a few things that kept bothering me. There was no definite time period for starters. It seemed at first like a historical piece but as the story went longer, it had elements of the contemporary world. It read like a fairy tale, but Red’s attitude and hunger for Max made her at times not very likable. Her father was almost a paper tiger. Not much of a threat until you got to Hank, who was very much a bully. The wolf in the woods not knowing another wolf was there…no. They can scent things and they would be aware of a pack. That was a problem for me. A small detail, but an important one. Another question-if Red never got to her Grandmother’s house with that picnic basket, why didn’t she tear down the place calling the cops?

An interesting read if you enjoy adult fairy tales and be prepared to use your imagination.

The latest entry in the sizzling paranormal vampire series featuring the Argeneau family – no one does wickedly funny and irresistibly steamy like Lynsay Sands!

Dante Notte has heard it said that love hurts. He just wasn’t expecting it to run him over in an RV. He needs to keep her safe from their pursuers while he rescues his brother. Most challenging of all, he needs to claim this smart, stubborn woman as his life mate.

But now that the men who took Dante’s twin are after her too, trusting her gut means risking her life for an immortal who’s the very definition of a perfect stranger.

I can always count on Ms. Sands to deliver a tale that takes me away from my every day gerbil wheel and propels me into a world I’m always happy to visit. Time ceased to matter, and indeed, it flew by because reading Runaway Vampire was an adventure in joy, excitement, exploration and fun. I usually feel happy after reading a book by this author and I’m glad to say this one continued the tradition.

Another reason that I can safely say this was a very good book was because of the one I read right before. It was so long of wind that by the time I hit page 150, my brain was alternately screaming from the slow pace of the story and trying to fall asleep at the same time. The plot and characters were good but the delivery was an exercise in molasses. Not so with Runaway Vampire, oh no, by page 150 it was steamy, it was exciting and I couldn’t wait to read more, more, more. Maybe my higher rating is because I was so incredibly happy to read a plot that actually moved and had a brisk and stimulating pace that thrilled me to my toes. I enjoyed the emotions of an older woman finding herself young again, I loved watching Dante love her before the turn, and after, I giggled at the part where Lucien (fans can never forget HIS character) actually cracked a joke and I adored the reason why he won’t change his phone ringtones no matter how much they irritate him. So romantic!

Ms. Sands does have a little background drama that starts off in this book but it is meant for the next one. Talk about a successful hook; there is no way on this good earth that I will miss the next book if it’s about Tomasso. The external conflict does however plague both Dante and Mary and provides opportunities for readers to see just how well matched they are as a couple.

As for humor, I never knew where it would pop up. One of the most hilarious scenes for me stems from where this sentence shows up, “Stop playing with your condoms and kiss me.” If readers have a sense of humor like me, they are going to have a giggle fest that will last for at least a page or so because the whole visual Ms. Sands painted with her descriptions and dialogue was uproariously funny. I’ve re-read those paragraphs quite a few times just so I could snicker/snort some more – it’s total fun!

Runaway Vampire is a hit. It’s practically perfect, a little quirky, still has the Argeneau family feel to it and I’m satisfied with the happy for now. Why an HFN? Because it ended with a beginning and I am excited about the prospect. Ms. Sands knows how to leave a reader craving for more in all the best ways.

This remarkable collection of short fiction exposes the terrors that hide beneath the surface of our ordinary world, behind people’s masks of normalcy, and lurking in the shadows at the farthest reaches of the universe.

Almost anything can be terrifying if you look at it the right way.

The main character in “The Silent Ones” had a peculiar problem: even though the post office claimed nothing was out of the ordinary, he hadn’t been receiving his mail. What made it all even more bizarre was that no one else seemed to notice how upset he was by this. I read a lot of science fiction, and I’ve never seen anything like this story before. It reminded me why I enjoy this genre so much, especially once the plot progressed and the main character started noticing other strange developments in his life. Seeing how an otherwise mild-mannered guy reacted to all of these weird things made me wish for a sequel. I would have really liked to know what happened next!

There were certain things about “Gods and Devils” that never made sense to me. The storyline was about a space ship’s captain, Vega, who comes out of stasis only to realize that something horribly violent has taken place while he and all of the other humans on board were unconscious while en route to a new home. His confusion and panic was completely justifiable at first. Had he been an ordinary person who wasn’t in charge of the safety of so many other people, his later actions wouldn’t have been so jarring. I had a lot of trouble understanding why someone with as much training and experience as one would need to be a captain would react the way he did later on in the plot, though. It might have made sense for someone who wasn’t particularly intelligent, but it wasn’t at all what I would have expected from a professional with his background.

In “Show and Tell,” Jacob has been sent to his school psychologist’s office to discuss a series of disturbing drawings he created. The pictures showed medical equipment and other things that most children don’t have experience with at Jacob’s age, so his psychologist was curious to see where the boy had learned about them and why he was so obsessed with them. What I liked the most about this tale was how straightforward it was. The narrator laid everything out methodically and didn’t dance around the topic once it became obvious what was happening. While I did figure out the twist early on, it was still interesting to see if my theory was correct. The ending was also nicely handled. It fit in well with everything else that had been established about Jacob and his home life earlier on.

I’d recommend The Dark at the End of the Tunnel to anyone who likes the dark and sometimes gory side of science fiction.

My name is Octavius Septimus Stalk, but my friends call me Oss. I live in the City of Keys, a town of gears, keys, locks, and wonder. Our forefathers banished magic long ago, bolted the doors and locked everything up tight to keep people out and the town’s secrets in. Four Lock Lords control what information is left, and everyone else is left struggling to survive.

Despite what Thorne, my naïve lover, thinks, I was an orphan, but not a victim. When I walked the streets at the age of twelve, I learned fast where to steal the best food, how to use my daggers, and where to hide my would-be attackers’ bodies. No one suspected me of such violence. No one knew then or now that I have magic inside me.

Now, power hungry men intend to release the magic for their own benefit—at the expense of the rest of the city. We will stop them, even if Thorne must battle his own kin, even if I must reveal my hidden talents and the role I seem destined to play.

A mage in hiding becomes embroiled in a conspiracy of evil men who wish to release magic into a steampunk world for their own nefarious reasons.

This story is told in first person from Oss’s point of view. He’s a former street urchin and a thief who keeps his magical abilities secret because those who have it tend to vanish in the dead of night, as magic is banned and tightly locked away. Oss is now one of the city’s key keepers and also in an established relationship with Thorne, a city guard who comes from wealth and nobility (he’s related to one of the four Lock Lords!) and whose star is on the rise. The plot moves at a quick pace, so we’re mostly not bogged down, and there’s a good balance between witty dialogue, fast-packed action, tense and thrilling moments, and sensual scenes.

The characters, especially the main heroes, are three-dimensional, smart and fun. Oss is more of an anti-hero, reluctant to be cast in a heroic role to save the world, and he hasn’t told anyone how his magic allows him unlock any locks he comes into contact with. Oss’s boyfriend Thorne is more attractive, suave, and outgoing. He’s warm and kind and a bit naive but he doesn’t retreat from dangers or challenges, and he never abandons Oss which I really appreciated. Their scenes together range from warm friendship to hot and heavy. In fact, this starts out pretty sexy and sensuous, but beyond that there’s a good story to be told. The relationship conflict is pretty mild, mainly Thorne wishing for them to be a couple, and Oss doubting true love could exist in a dystopian world. But… there’s also the fact that both men harbor a big secret from one another, so the prophecy coming to pass forces them to be honest, which creates a schism they must resolve together.

Though there’s sex in this book, this is more an adventure in a steampunk and fantasy setting than a romance. The world-building is done extremely well, it’s detailed and intricate without being overrun by useless info or smothered with info dumps. The story’s background is set by a prophecy that speaks of magic being released into the City of Locks, magic and gears colliding, and our heroes end up caught in the middle of that strife. This is something of a genre mashup, so if that’s not your thing…. For myself, I thought the mix of genres–adventure, fantasy, steampunk, fairytales, and erotic romance–was intriguing and certainly unique. I will definitely be checking out the next in the series (hoping there is one to be had!). In short, the City of Keys comes to life like one of the characters, and I longed to know more, see and hear and feel more.

You get a complete story here, but this being only the opening salvo for a new series, several things are left in the air. Yet none of that hampered my enjoyment and satisfaction of reading this tale of a fascinating world and its people. I highly recommend this for everyone who likes their established couples sassy and super-sexy, their adventures thrilling and dangerous, and their fantasy world well crafted and full of delicious details and coloring outside the lines.

Their love is an explosive cocktail—stirred, shaken, and served with a twist.

Secrets, Book 4

Teag and Bruce dream of opening their own bars, but that’s where the similarities end.

Teag, a popular bartender at West Hollywood’s hottest club, is willful, opinionated, and likes to take charge. He envisions his future bar as a boozy oasis for craft cocktails. Unfortunately, while he’s big on ideas, he’s short on funds.

Bruce, on the other hand, is a tower of pirate-tattooed muscle with a laid-back attitude. While he’s good with people, he’s a walking paradox—a wannabe boss with a weakness for bossy men.

Their partnership is a natural fit, but every time they meet, sparks fly as they rub each other the wrong way. Or is it the right way? In the heat of the moment, it’s hard to tell.

Between renovation pitfalls, meddling friends, and miles of police tape, Teag and Bruce struggle to keep their venture—and their budding relationship—from going up in flames. And not the good kind. More like the one on the top of a B52 shot.

Warning: Contains a whipcord-lean and whip-smart bartender who knows what he wants—and how hard he wants it—and a go-with-the-flow bar manager who secretly likes to be told how hard to give it.

Teag wants to open his own bar, but he’s on a very tight budget. Bruce has just found out the bar he works at is being sold and he’s also on the lookout for a space to open a bar of his own. When Teag and Bruce find themselves scouting out the same location, the sparks fly between them. Despite the fact they each rub the other the wrong way, Teag is determined to try and make his bar work. So he makes a proposition to Bruce – they co-own the new property and run the bar together.

This is an interesting story I found myself really drawn into. Teag and Bruce are both intrigued by each other, but they seriously butt heads initially. Watching them each lower their guard and look past the superficial surface was lovely. Each man needs what the other can give him – both romantically and professionally – but they’re both resistant to needing or relying on the other. I found it really lovely to read. The pacing is also quite good. I found it slightly slow in the beginning, but as it picks up speed I eagerly turned the pages faster and faster.

I liked how there were a few sub-plots revolving around the bar and renovation, previous lives of the location, normal hiccups in the renovation process and a strange mystery about who was trying to derail the project. I thought there was plenty to keep any reader hooked. I also liked how there was so much chemistry and tension between Teag and Bruce. There was a limited amount of sex scenes – the plot and characters were far more prominent – but the erotic scenes were mouth-wateringly hot and definitely a delight to read.

A fun, mostly lighthearted story I’d happily recommend it for M/M readers.

Now she’s back because her family’s bank needs her desperately. Although she reluctantly settles into a quiet life in her hometown, she’s soon embraced by the knitting circle at a local shop, and Hope finally begins to understand the charms of small-town living: the neighbors who truly care for you and the slower pace that affords an appreciation of more simple joys.

She steers clear of Heath, knowing she foolishly lost her chance with him long ago. But when she gives a personal loan to the women who own the local knitting shop without consulting Heath, who has helped them with their finances for years, the two must work together to ensure the ladies’ business plan is in tip-top shape.

Surely a man capable of creating such pure beauty has a heart that can forgive. But can he still love?

Time has a way of maturing youthful infatuation into mature love but it doesn’t come without some growing pains.

Heath and Hope met in college and made plans. Well, Hope made plans and when Heath’s “hobby” led him in a different direction she pushed him further away. It would be a one of the few compulsive decisions she made, but it was a doozy with consequences that stole years from them.

The rekindled tension starts building for Hope as soon as she sees a familiar piece of artwork hanging in Heath’s store and Heath seems to have never let it rest. That tension explodes with the catalyst of Hope’s decision to loan some money to the sweet Stinson twins and gives new meaning to the term angry sex. If was obvious they both needed and had tried to avoid the connection as long as possible but like a magnet to steel, these two would always be drawn to one another. It was really beautiful.

I had to side with Hope on her obsession with one specific piece of male real estate, I kind of love snuggling up to that sweet spot, too. I knew she’d find her way back into Heath’s arms and more importantly his heart but these two are as stubborn as they can be. They’re both a little wary of getting their hearts broken again, too. I knew when they finally started to communicate they’d be alright. And Heath, sweet socially awkward Heath, he was precious and I couldn’t wait for Hope to admit it, too.

This is sweet and sensual addition to the Beauford series. The author has created a fantastic setting with the town of Beauford, Tennessee and I just love coming back to visit time and again. The secondary characters are so much fun and it’s great to see some favorites from other stories.

For a short story to warm you on a cold night, take a trip to Beauford Bend. Plus, there’s a cool bonus at the end of this book. Don’t miss it!

Talking Etiquette with Sally Orr
If you open a nineteenth century etiquette book like, The ladies’ hand-book of etiquette and manual of politeness, you will find rules for everything. Rules on how to properly address a letter, how to meet someone in a demure fashion, what to do if a gentleman is vulgar, or how to stand or walk the proper distance from your betters.

Huh?

Many of these rules are common sense and still apply today. Some however, to repeat a cliché, have gone with the wind. For example, anyone familiar with social media must realize that nineteenth century rules of modesty have been forgotten.

One of the charms of historical romance is to spend a few moments in the graceful past. While I’ve never come across someone standing a few paces behind a Duke in romance novels, there are many other aspects of etiquette that do grace their pages. Who does not like a gentleman who would place his cape over a mud puddle so a lady may not get muddy?

Sigh.

One other form of etiquette I admire is the habit of taking a bow of respect. Forget the etiquette of gentlemen standing upon a lady’s entrance (that might resemble whack-a-mole and give me an outbreak of the giggles), but who wouldn’t enjoy a brief bow of respect every once and awhile? I wonder if my husband would do this? He’ll give me a wink and probably say, “I’ll give you an occasional bow if you walk two paces behind me.”

Here’s an excerpt from TO CATCH A RAKE when the hero behaves like a gentleman, even though he might not be feeling that way:

Halfway to his destination, he observed three lovely ladies approaching him on the pathway. The first lady caught sight of him at a hundred paces and stopped in her tracks. The other women then stopped too. The group conversed for a minute before giggles erupted.

George hated giggles. Women were not high on his list of favorite things at the moment. They ranked right up there with over-flowing privies. None of them could be trusted, because they were all inveterate tittle-tattlers, bags of maudlin sentiment, and silly book writers.

“Oh look, that’s the very man himself,” the first lady said, immediately pulling back her hand when caught pointing at him.

He lengthened his stride, hoping to pass them in seconds.

“Are you certain?” the second lady said.

The first lady furtively nodded.

Ten feet before their paths crossed, he caught a white flash out of the corner of his eye. Upon further examination, it appeared the first lady had dropped her handkerchief on the pavement in front of him. He ground his teeth. Then swore he had no intention of picking it up. Very likely his chivalry toward the fairer sex may have escaped him permanently. He quickened his step.

A foot away, the second lady dropped her handkerchief right in his path. If he stepped on it, the handkerchief would be ruined, so he had to stop. Glaring downward at the offending cloth, he mumbled a strong swear word under his breath. He inhaled, tipped his hat, and bowed. “Ladies.” He then addressed the third one. “Would you care to drop your handkerchief too? It’s more efficient if I pick all three up at the same time. Besides, I would hate to leave a member of your party out of my gallantries.”

All of the ladies beamed.

The third one shook her head. “I forgot to bring my handkerchief,” she said in a disappointed tone.

He feigned a smile. “My loss.”

They all continued to smile and repeatedly nodded at each other.

He bent over to pick up the two white linen squares. At the very moment his hand grabbed the first one, a flash of silver and a heavy thump sounded as a silver reticule dropped on the pavement in front of his nose.

Seemingly without a handkerchief, the third lady had thrown in her reticule.

A moment of uneasy silence followed. Finally, he straightened and burst out in laughter.

The three women joined him, and they all laughed together.

After regaining his composure, he shook his head and bent over to pick up the small collection of items on the pavement. He then gracefully handed each piece to the correct owner, followed with a deep bow.

“Thank you, sir.”

“Thank you, Miss . . .”

“Goddess,” she said, looking entirely pleased with herself.

“And I’m Miss Widow,” her companion added.

Her friend nudged her arm. “Miss Widow Maker, dear.”

“Yes, I make widows.”

He chuckled and doffed his hat. “Ladies.” Once on his way again, he heaved a sigh of relief. Thankfully, he acknowledged his anger did not apply to all women—just one.

No Good Rake Goes Unpunished

When George Drexel used his vast experience with women to write and publish The Rake’s Handbook: Including Field Guide, little did he realize the havoc it would cause. Now years later, the rumor of a second edition has London’s naughtiest widows pounding on his door, begging to be included. But George has given up his roguish ways and wants nothing more than to be left alone with his architectural pursuits…until beautiful Meta Russell tempts him from his work and leaves him contemplating an altogether different sort of plan.

The handbook may be years out of print, but it still has the power to ruin lives. Desperate to save her sister—whose inclusion has left her jilted—Meta tracks down the rake responsible, only to find a man who steals her breath and leaves her reeling. Banding together to put things to rights, George and Meta find themselves drawn inexorably together…but can Meta truly trust her heart to a man who wrote the book on being a rake?

Helping, and protecting a Vampire slayer . . . . Bloody hard work!

Thirteen years ago, Brendan Daniels made a deal with a psychic. In exchange for information on the whereabouts of a Rogue Werewolf, he promised to help and protect Sofia’s granddaughter. Unfortunately, he had no idea what he was letting himself, or his Pack, in for.

Nothing about Heather is simple, from her weird dietary needs to her life’s mission. The girl can handle herself, but the promise to protect her soon becomes a need, and one he can’t fully understand.

Vampire Slayer.
Born Infected.
Addicted to blood . . . but not by choice.

Heather Ryan is the current Slayer in a long family line. Like all before her, she has spent her life searching for her ancestor, Marko Pavel, the Vampire her family has sworn to kill. If that isn’t complicated enough, she is also a born “Infected”, and to keep her from becoming insane or giving in to her darker side, she is on a very strict diet.

Now that her Grandmother Sofia has passed, it is up to Heather to take the family legacy into her own hands. Or at least, it would have been…if her Grandmother hadn’t sent a Werewolf to help her.

What is the irritating Brendan supposed to help her with? Sofia never told either of them. Luckily, it doesn’t take long for Heather and Brendan to find out that the Vampires have big plans, and that the Leeches have waited a long time for them both.

Can a vampire slayer and a werewolf ever get along?

Heather and Ryan know almost nothing about each other. Their only connection is Sofia, and since they both trust Sofia, they grudgingly accept the fact they’ll be working together temporarily. Neither of them is exactly happy about the arrangement. As I read, I was definitely intrigued by their situation. What event in Heather’s future could be so horrible that Sofia had to set a plan in place so many years in advance? It doesn’t take long for Heather and Brendan to get into serious trouble. Once Heather learns the vampires’ terrifying agenda, she’ll sacrifice anything to stop them. This book does contain some graphic violence. Readers sensitive to this content are forewarned.

Heather and Ryan are certainly a reluctant team. I completely understand their hesitance to trust each other at first. After all, they are strangers thrust together for a purpose they know nothing about. Both are very strong personalities, so they are bound to clash. At first, I found their bickering and arguing entertaining. However, I must admit that it got old after a while. Heather and Brendan help each other out of some horrifying situations. Each time I would think they had finally reached a point in their relationship where they will stop fighting and each time I was disappointed. I found this a bit frustrating because by the end of the book, it was clear that they did care about each other. Also, a romantic moment between them caught me completely off guard. While I could tell that they were slowly beginning to trust each other, I never sensed any real chemistry between them. To me, their bond seemed to be one of friendship rather than romance. Consequently, the romantic moment between them felt forced.

Despite this issue, I must say that Cranberry Blood is a well paced book full of danger and action. Ms. Morgan has clearly put a lot of time and thought into the world she has created. I found her version of werewolves and vampires interesting, and each twist in the tale kept me reading.

Overall, Cranberry Blood is a good book. The plot is a real nail-biter sure to keep readers on the edge of their seats. I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a fast paced paranormal filled with action.
