I am in Hell.

Correction, Damnation.

I’m dead but I don’t care. What is this place I’ve fallen into with its neat rows of the pure white townhouses with a backdrop of more white? Where is the evil, the fire, the brimstone, the painful, agonizing screams of torture? Where is the Hell?

The only thing remotely interesting about Damnation is the fact that we can’t go into Damnation Gardens. Why? What lurks behind those tall, imposing black walls? Will it be something truly hellish or will I spend eternity in this peaceful, too perfect place?

Not if I have anything to do with it. Hell shall rise with me.

How would you respond to an afterlife that wasn’t at all what you were expecting it to be?

The protagonist’s personal development was marvelous. It took me a little bit to figure out what was going on with this character because the plot was written from a first-person perspective. This turned out to be an excellent decision, though, because it required me as a reader to think carefully about the clues the main character dropped about who they had been when they were alive.

The only thing I would have liked to see done differently had to do with which names of the characters were shared with the audience. A couple of their names were revealed. The vast majority were not. This is a very minor criticism of an otherwise chilling story, but I think it would have been more consistent for all of the characters to either mention their real names or keep them concealed.

There’s something to be said for letting a reader’s imagination run wild. Ms. Wilson struck a smart balance between describing what Damnation looked and sounded like and allowing me to imagine other key elements of it for myself. It was far scarier to come up with my own interpretation of what certain parts of this community were really like or why they operated the way they did than to have everything handed to me. Writing it this way was smart!

The First 18 Days was so frightening that I had to stop reading it well before bedtime. This is a fantastic choice for anyone who loves the horror genre.

The Donnellys, Book 1

Ryan Donnelly’s past relationship may have failed, but he’s determined to make single fatherhood and his career a resounding success. He’s got his eye on the top of the ladder at an L.A. marketing firm when his gaze snags on co-worker Maiya Rossini.

Maiya clawed her way out of her dysfunctional, trailer-park childhood to earn a college degree and establish a promising career. Her future dreams are big, bright and packed with full-throttle fun, but when it comes to matters of the heart and men—especially stuffy corporate types like Ryan—her past slams on the emotional brakes.

In the office and in the bedroom, Maiya and Ryan rub each other in all the right ways. Though Maiya is everything Ryan didn’t know he wanted, he’s got his work cut out for him convincing her she’s worthy of love—or the bright light she’s brought to his life could slip through his fingers.

This book was a wonderful surprise! I chose it to read and then got so caught up in summertime activities that I forgot about having it on my Kindle. Then came the rainy day that I discovered it and began reading right then and there…and couldn’t put it down until the end.

This story was simply a pleasure to read. The author’s writing style was fluid and I was easily swept away by the sheer romanticism of the plot. Ryan and Maiya hooked up at work and scorched up the sheets in the bedroom, but their relationship was complicated. They came from different worlds and had a lot of difficult emotional baggage. Ryan was occupied with business, family and being a single dad to his son. Maiya had worked hard to make it better life for herself. She had a very brash exterior that she used to cover a painful past; while inside she was emotionally fragile. The wonderful thing about this book was the amazing chemistry between these two totally opposite people and how they took a chance on being disappointed for the chance at love. Isn’t that what true romance is, after all ? I will tell you that it’s what I look for in a romance novel.

This book was a fun sexy read. The plot was original and enlivened by the engaging banter between Ryan and Maiya. I enjoyed the laughter and the way the author kept me smiling even when I got frustrated by how Maiya continued to push Ryan away. It got emotional at times, as there were a few really gutwrenching moments for Maiya. Then there were the sexy times, and may I just say that this book is plenty hot. It had a lot of love scenes and they were incendiary.

Unworthy Heart begins The Donnellys Series ….. so there is definitely more hotness to come. It’s an entertaining book that kept me interested the entire way through and had me wanting more. So I’ll be checking out the next book for sure …

Welcome to Midnight, Texas, a town with many boarded-up windows and few full-time inhabitants, located at the crossing of Witch Light Road and Davy Road. It’s a pretty standard dried-up western town.

There’s a pawnshop (someone lives in the basement and is seen only at night). There’s a diner (people who are just passing through tend not to linger). And there’s new resident Manfred Bernardo, who thinks he’s found the perfect place to work in private (and who has secrets of his own).

Stop at the one traffic light in town, and everything looks normal. Stay awhile, and learn the truth…

Welcome to Midnight, Texas, but be warned: while we may look like a sleepy little town, we are anything but. Or, at least, that’s what the town’s city limits sign should read, if you ask me. Newcomer Manfred Bernardo, who has more than a few secrets of his own, rather feels the same way. From the moment he enters Midnight, everything changes for him. Will he find a way to fit in or will he pull up roots and move on?

Although I’ve long been a fan of Ms. Harris’ Southern Vampire series, I’d never taken the time to read her Lily Bard books or even the Harper Connelly books, which is a shame because she has taken characters from her other series and brought them to reside in Midnight. Manfred being one of them. In a way, I’m glad I didn’t know anything about him – or Bobo for that matter – because it gave me a bit of a fresh perspective. I love it when authors weave characters from other series into new series, it gives the long-time readers something to smile about and the new ones something to discover for the first time.

As always, Midnight Crossroad is jam packed with eccentric and unusual characters. My favorites are Fiji, her cat, Mr. Snuggly, and Manfred. I adore Fiji because she’s a witch of great power but has no clue. Watching her discover what she really is capable of is fun and exciting. Mr. Snuggly, on the other hand, is the epitome of every cat I’ve ever owned. He’s arrogant, he’s rude, and he’s always hungry. But, he’s also Fiji’s familiar and best pal, so we’ll cut him a little slack. Manfred is an interesting character, one I hope we get to know more about. Working as a psychic under several different names, he makes his living without having to leave his house. His struggle to find his place in a town as odd as Midnight isn’t as difficult as he thought it might be.

If you’re looking for a light and fun read with a bit of paranormal mystery thrown in, you’re looking in the right place. Midnight Crossroad has a little bit of everything – murder, mayhem, vampires, psychics, witches and who knows what else. Wrapped up neatly with a healthy dose of Ms. Harris’ southern charm and sharp wit, it’s a package worth opening and devouring immediately.

Welcome to Hartley-by-the-Sea in England’s beautiful Lake District, where two sisters who meet as strangers find small miracles tucked into the corners of every day….

When Lucy Bagshaw’s life in Boston falls apart, thanks to a scathing editorial written by her famous artist mother, she accepts her half sister Juliet’s invitation to stay with her in a charming seaside village in northern England. Lucy is expecting quaint cottages and cream teas, but instead finds that her sister is an aloof host, the weather is wet, windy, and cold, and her new boss, Alex Kincaid, is a disapproving widower who only hired her as a favor to Juliet.

Despite the invitation she offered, Juliet is startled by the way Lucy catapults into her orderly life. As Juliet faces her own struggles with both her distant mother and her desire for a child, her sister’s irrepressible optimism begins to take hold. With the help of quirky villagers, these hesitant rainy day sisters begin to forge a new understanding…and find in each other the love of family that makes all the difference.

A cup of tea at the sea-side will surely solve all problems? Kate Hewitt’s buttery new novel, Rainy Day Sisters, revels in heartwarming and is decorated by (indeed, utterly awash) in the picturesque. The back cover blurb tells us almost too much about sisters Lucy and Juliet, about the principle problem and about finding what matters.

Impeccably written, this novel does absolutely transport the reader to Britain’s wonderful lake district. Its worth the read for the background alone–not only views, but the local activities (hikers/walkers abound) as well as the local food. In one place, Hewitt tells us the scene was ‘Like a painting by Constable come to life.’ One after another, scenes like this abound; visuals presented with beautiful words, making up beautiful scenes. A more descript writer cannot be imagined.

Lucy steps into a not-quite idyllic life and manages to run up against the new boss nearly straightaway, over nothing. Things do not automatically go her way, although this is hardly the start of her problems. She has our sympathy, although we wonder about her sister’s views…

Lucy’s views on art might well feed on the views before her. She might be forgiven for wishing things “syrupy and golden.” Although the storyline here is not predictable, its emotional ride sure is. Still, there is much lovely within.

Rainy Day Sisters delivers as promised; If you are in the mood for this, its rather overly precious approach to life will be welcome.

How I handled the research for the book
by Jeanette Watts, author of Wealth and Privilege

Research is fun and yummy, and that’s half the fun of being a historic fiction writer!

When I was in graduate school, I had to take a course on library research. One of the first things the professor said was, “When you have a big research project, the first thing you do is make friends with the librarian.” Some of the most important writing advice I’ve ever gotten.

I started writing Wealth and Privilege 16 years ago. The internet then wasn’t like it is now! Back then, I couldn’t just Google the census records for Johnstown in 1880. I had to go to the Johnstown library and spend a few days making friends with the librarian… and the newspapers, and the maps, etc. The reason the Washburn A mill explosion of 1878 shows up in my book is because I spent some quality time at the Minnesota History Center in St. Paul. I went to high school in Minnesota, I wanted to put in some sort of connection to a part of my past. Since for forces of plot, I needed an industrial accident of some sort, it was perfect. And, of course, it’s one more juicy bit of history to add, which makes the story all the more believable.

The most significant libraries where I spent vast amounts of time are the Pennsylvania Room at the Carnegie Library and the Heinz History Center archives in Pittsburgh. Both places were treasure troves of maps, biographies, newspapers, city directories, census records, etc. And the archivists and librarians were gold mines. My favorite story happened at the Heinz Archives. I had a scene with a lot of blanks to fill in. I walked up to the archivist, and I said, “If I’m rich, and I live on Penn Avenue, and it’s 1880, and I get sick, who is my doctor?” He looked up at me, thought for just a moment, then said, “Dr. McClelland. I’ll get you his file.” That file box held all sorts of treasures. I have held in my hand the anonymous letter that went with the donation that started Shadyside Hospital. (It doesn’t show up in my book, but it was still cool!) I was able to make sketches of the hospital where my characters went. I even have the address.

Almost a year later, I was back at the Heinz while they had an exhibit of clothing from the 1800s. I’m a costumer, I’ve been to the Costume Museum in Bath, and the First Ladies exhibit at the Smithsonian, and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. I never miss the chance to see more samples of the real thing! (That is why I can also describe the clothing throughout the book with a great degree of comfort. I’ve seen the real thing, and I’ve made many imitations.) And then, there among the ladies’ dresses, was a man’s frock coat. The tag read, “Dr. David McClelland.” I was so excited, I felt like I’d found an artifact that belonged to my own relative. It wasn’t just a name on a tag. I knew this man through that archival box.

I’m working on the sequel now, and the research is entirely different! If you want to see the First Ladies’ gowns from the Smithsonian, there’s a whole webpage about them. Census records are online. Photo collections from archives are online. In a way, it’s unfortunate. I needed to spend time researching information on Colorado and several parts of Europe. Once upon a time, it would have required a trip out to visit a librarian. Now I can get most of the answers while I stay at home.

Thomas Baldwin finds himself married to a woman he can’t stand, while head-over heels in love with another woman he can’t have. Talk about bad planning. He feels like a kite, buffeted by circumstances which blow him not only through personal crises, but also through some of the most significant events in Pittsburgh during the late 1800s, including the railroad riots of 1877, the creation of the Homestead Steel Works, the assassination of President Garfield, and the Johnstown Flood. Over time, and with the help of his muse, who dances maddeningly just beyond his reach, he takes control of his life, wresting it from the winds attempting to control him.

A carefully-researched historical novel about life among the privileged class of Pittsburgh during the Industrial Revolution.

Enjoy an excerpt:

Irritating his mother wasn’t specifically Thomas’ favorite hobby. She did, however, seem to excel at providing him with opportunities to do so. He didn’t have to try very hard. His very existence was an obvious irritant to her. It wasn’t because of who he was – Thomas knew perfectly well it was all about what he wasn’t.

He wasn’t everything his older brother Benjamin had been; quick and clever and charming and talkative. The entire Baldwin family – especially his mother, Eugenia Baldwin, aspiring family matriarch and his most verbal critic – admitted that Thomas was the much more handsome of the two. Then everyone shrugged. Pretty is as pretty does.

Thomas had to agree on that point. He gladly would have traded his bright blue eyes and much-admired dark hair for the ability to know what to say to people.

He stood at the entrance to the ballroom in his parents’ house, surrounded by giggling girls all wishing him a happy birthday with their dance cards not-so-subtly dangling from their wrists. Trying to smile, he offered his hand to accept the little pencils and sign the blasted things.

About the Author:MediaKit_AuthorPhoto_WealthAndPrivilegeJeanette Watts has written television commercials, marketing newspapers, stage melodramas, four screenplays, three novels, and a textbook on waltzing.

When she isn’t writing, she teaches social ballroom dances, refinishes various parts of her house, and sews historical costumes and dance costumes for her Cancan troupe.
