The Genius

Sophie Ward is a scientist with the looks of a geek and the fantasies of a hot-blooded siren. She’s wanted security expert Chris Riley from the moment he first came to work at the Blackwood Research Institute that houses her lab. And the more she’s gotten to know the gorgeous bad boy, the more she’s fallen into lust with him. But despite the encouragement of her best friend, Sophie has never had the guts to ask him out. Until the day a fateful fortune cookie sets the ball rolling….

Chris Riley is a man who knows what he wants…and it’s Sophie Ward. But circumstances have kept them apart for too long, and now his need for the adorable scientist is at the breaking point. She’s so shy, there’s no telling how she might react to the things he wants from her. Hell, she could even turn him in for sexual harassment. But none of that is enough to keep Chris from hungering for Sophie, and his patience is running thin….

The Moment

When a mishap finally brings their mutual attraction out into the open, the scorching intensity of their desire is enough to burn them to ash. But will they be able to make something of the wreckage when Chris’s past rears its ugly head? Or will they lose the best thing they’ve ever found?

Sophie Ward has been mooning over the chief of security, Chris Riley, forever. A fortune cookie finally pushes her to do what her best friend has been insisting: “Today is the day to take what you want.” Even cookies have accepted it’s time she made her move. Even though she’s terrified of being emotionally shot down, she knows it’s time to make herself ask him out. Çhris was thrilled when it finally seemed Sophie was going to ask for more, but when she backs out, he decides enough is enough. He’s wanted her for months now, and he’s tired of being patient. It’s time for him to make his move.

Readers who like a slow build up to their sizzling chemistry should find this story very appealing. I loved how Sophie and Chris didn’t just jump right into bed together, but we saw them first as friends and then in that awkward dance shifting from friends to more. Personally, I got a little tired of Sophie’s stammering and ignorance. While I love the character being unaware of her appeal and rusty in the romance department, I thought it a little much when she seemed to genuinely clueless to certain things. For an incredibly intelligent scientist, I questioned Sophie’s IQ a few times. Like who is confused when an almost-lover asks if you’re on the pill? He isn’t asking because he’s curious about your vitamin intake – he wants to know if you’re protected. I would think even the meanest intelligence would gather that, but Sophie managed to not understand what he was really asking.

I loved the sex. The author manages to make it both sweet and still incredibly hot. Chris’ attraction to Sophie is blindingly obvious, as is her need and desire for him. The BDSM is mild, but still very erotic. I felt the author could have eased into it a little more slowly – it genuinely felt a bit like after they’d become intimate Sophie changed from a shy, clueless little quasi-virgin into a rampant sex fiend wanting to be tied up and “not be used gently”. This shift in her attitude – while awesome – was quite brief to my mind and sharp enough to make me pause and wonder if I’d missed something. Despite being disappointed in Sophie a number of times (especially near the end when she loses her confidence) I really did like her character. Not all heroines can be strong, or trusting. While I was sad Sophie wasn’t one of these strong-minded, self-confidant women, I still found her likable and relatable.

While there are a few areas I personally questioned, I found this to be a fun, seriously sexy read and a good story. The characters were vivid and believable and the sex was smoking hot.

Deep in the Arizona desert live a girl and her dad, burying secrets–and bodies.

Mesa Kingston’s first memory of burying a corpse was at eight years old. Back then it had been the carcass of a large lizard her dad found that they buried in the backyard of their isolated cottage. At age fourteen, the body of a young lady accompanied the reptile’s remains, and ever since, an accumulation of female bodies began to grow. Now, the only way Mesa can stop the haunting screams of the dead is by drowning them out with flames. Or is there more to the blaze than even she can perceive?

Enjoy an excerpt:

Good girls do anything for their fathers, including rob, cheat, and kill, and I always considered myself a good girl. The time I first came to that conclusion will stay with me forever. Years later, here I am, still fulfilling my daughterly duty.

After wiping the sweat from my palm onto my jeans, I press the bulbous tip of the match against the strike strip on the side of the small carton. My hands shake worse than Grandma’s had when trying to slice her ninety-first birthday cake just a few hours ago, but I manage to run the match across it anyway. The flame comes alive at my fingertips, dancing merrily at the prospect of latching on to something and disintegrating it into smoldering embers. Although the light breeze causes the flame to flicker at the end of the matchstick, I’m aware of the control I have over it. I watch the glow change shape through a veil of tears and with that the decision was absolute.

The flame will get to perform its destructive duty.

I flick the match toward the pile of wooden planks that used to be the porch. Instantly the fire catches the fumes of the pooled liquid and expands so quickly a wall of gasoline-scented hot air rushes me before the blaze travels deeper into the house. I back away to a safe distance as the straw-like grass crunches beneath my feet. Nearing the homemade fence, which is nothing more than a double row of chicken wire, I hear the screams from the distance, cries of agony that meld with my memory like two spreading pools of melted wax. I can’t stop the waterworks. I don’t even make an attempt.

About the Author:

The L.L. stands for Leslie Lee. I write erotic romance and post-apocalyptic/dystopian fiction under Leslie Lee Sanders.

But horror and thriller fiction is what I grew up on, what inspires me, and what began my pursuit to authorship. I’ve written many short scary stories since the 6th grade. Now they’re much more mature in general, thanks to the wide range of emotion and experience I’ve encountered over the years.

I’m a huge fan of horror and psychological thrillers in every fashion, including movies, books, art, campfire tales, etc. Some of my favorite stories are those that twist at the end or are ambiguous with deep societal or morality themes. This includes dystopias like Hugh Howey’s Wool, psychological thrillers like Shutter Island, and popular and classic horror/romances like V.C. Andrews’s Flowers in the Attic, my favorite.

All my ideas start with a twist, which is exactly how most of my stories end.

The heirs to one of the oldest Cognac estates in France face a hostile takeover by foreign investors. Renowned wine expert Benjamin Cooker is called in to audit the books. A venerated cognac producer with a long history, Chinese investors, interesting family dynamics and a suspicious death make for a compelling read.

The added bonus of this cozy mystery is the atmosphere the authors create and the landscape descriptions. Reading Cognac Conspiracies is like visiting the Cognac region, so vivid is the setting. The text is imbued with a certain ‘Frenchness’ that gives it a special charm. On top of that, the reader gets a lesson on cognac, wines and winemaking.

Although this mystery was rather easy to solve, the characters in this series are anything but simple. Particularly the relationship between Benjamin Cooker and his assistant Virgile is intriguing. The appearance of an old flame of Benjamin’s also revealed new aspects of his character. The Lavoisier family is another bunch of compelling characters, but I was disappointed in how vaguely Benjamin’s wife was characterized. I’d love to know more about her.

Cognac Conspiracies is a quick read, with a story that moves along at a fast pace so that it never loses the reader’s interest. But particularly at the beginning, the time frame was a bit confusing and I had to re-read certain passages about the history of the Lavoisier family to understand the timeline.

Cognac Conspiracies is the fifth book in the Winemaker Detective Series but can easily be read as a standalone. It’s a quick, fun read with entertaining characters and little drama.

Geneviève Mortimer is a will o’ the wisp who hunts demons to ease the pain of her troubled past.

When Madame Eve brings them together for a torrid 1Night Stand, will they be able to come in from the cold at last?

Spokane Raines – Spook – is in Paris on a mission. Genevieve Mortimer – Genny – is a demon hunter, and a damn good one, despite her outward appearance of a ditzy, free-spirited, carefree lady of leisure. And she’s hunting a tricky demon right now – Spook. Spook however has next to no memory of his time before the agency, and certainly he has no knowledge of the demon-blood coursing through his veins. Genny can sense Spook thinks he’s human, but she knows he’s not. But once they come face to face, the chemistry between them is undeniable and overwhelming. They both realise that with each other they can come in from the cold outside, and get some serious heat built up between them.

This is a fun, seriously sexy story filled with lust and amazing chemistry. I really enjoyed how when they finally came together Genny owned her sexuality and kept pace with Spook through every touch and lick. There are plenty of strong secondary characters from Sleepy Hollow. Readers who have read the previous novels will almost certainly enjoy the catch ups with all of them, but this shouldn’t detract first time readers either. Genny and Spook’s story is front and centre and while it might be clear there are other stories you’ve missed, I found I could happily read this without the others.

There is tons of backstory filled in here. I found the author’s creativity was awesome and was really impressed with the depth of her world. I did, however, find it a little disorientating to read an action packed, paranormal spy story chock-full of slang and ultra modern street-talk. The two don’t seem to mesh well in my mind and while the author does a good job of it, I found the slang terms and modern speech patterns disjointing to read while also reading about Spook kicking ass and finding a computer chip he’d been on a mission to find. Many readers might find this far more comfortable than I – even enjoyable – but I found personally it kept pulling me out of the strongly paranormal storyline.

I feel that readers who have enjoyed previous Sleepy Hollow books will greatly enjoy this – especially the extra background that is divulged. I also think this book should appeal to readers who are fans of Ms. Kincaid’s style and other books. This is a fun, seriously sexy read with plenty of plot, action and a whole host of varied and interesting secondary characters. A great read.

The Moment of Realization by M.L. Buchman

One of the great challenges as a writer of romantic suspense is how to escalate a relationship relatively quickly without making it unbelievable. However, in my upcoming release Bring on the Dusk, I have two characters who are very used to keeping their thoughts to themselves. That was part of the real joy of writing this book, discovering along with the characters, their own emotions and reactions—whether getting ready for a dangerous mission, or stripped bare by exhaustion.

In the following scene, Michael and Claudia have known each other less than a day and already she’s considering the unique nature of the first meeting story.

*****

“No mission tonight.” Michael had taken her statement at face value. “But I think you might wish to attend the briefing.”

Not her first choice at all. She’d be asleep within thirty seconds of hitting the chair and end up slumped on the floor of the meeting room on her first day with the company. Hell of a first impression.

“I’ll try not to be boring.”

She laughed. It just burst out of her.

No one had ever been able read her like that.

Claudia had been accused of being an Ice Queen any number of times in her career, just because she liked keeping herself to herself. Of course, the guys said it because she wouldn’t sleep with them, which also had made the nickname useful. She’d learned early on the advantages of nurturing the image. She would occasionally let carefully selected men through her barriers, discreet ones who had no association with the Corps, though none of them had stuck for more than a few months.

But some of the women called her that too, which made her wonder. It was exactly the sort of thing Trisha would have said, if she’d thought to.

Claudia was far too tired to try to make sense of Trisha at the moment.

She was about to decline when Michael tipped his head in a gentle “C’mon.”

It was charming and she was tired enough to be charmed a little. She hadn’t missed his compliment or how much it had surprised his tablemates. And she’d never met someone who might understand the attraction of her desert. But maybe, just maybe, he did.

Share her desert with Colonel Michael.

She noted that in her head, it wasn’t an interrogative but rather a flat statement. Too young to be going senile, perhaps going psychotic? She’d known him for…an embrace, a meal, and a firefight.

Well, that only verified that they were both soldiers to the core. The average couple couldn’t point to the obliteration of an al-Qaeda cell as their meet-cute.

Couple? She really was losing it. It was a good thing she wasn’t one of those people whose brains connected directly to their mouths with no filter.

With a shrug of acceptance—which she deemed safe enough—she followed him up the steel ladders, through the ringing hangar deck where dozens of SOAR and Navy people were now scattered along a makeshift track, and on up to the flight deck.

3_2 BringontheDuskFive nations surround the Caspian Sea, five nations desperate for the vast resources there, and willing to go to war. It will take all of Claudia and Michael’s ingenuity to avert disaster. As they discover how right they are for each other, it will take even more to breach the walls they’ve so carefully built around their hearts…

It took him meeting a feisty, hot tempered and strong minded woman, for his feelings to return one by one. After living centuries without feeling Blaxton was not willing lose this one chance for love.

The beginning was interesting and well written however one thing that put me off was the fact that it was an insta-love/lust. The passion and lust was evident from the first page and after a couple of pages it was love. I don’t hate ‘love at first sight’ tropes but sometimes it’s tiring to read. I like a little more build up and tension before the declarations of love.

The plot was well written but there were some facts about turning vampires that seemed inconsistent and incomplete. Nothing that ruined the story or stopped me from reading, it just stood out to me.

This is a story where a vampire knight, or warrior, meets his chosen mate. However, this story is not as simple as that. They have to go through a mad man to get to their HEA. It has a heroine with a strong sense of humor, and an equally volatile temper and spirit to match the strength of her hero.

A vampire and a human both with haunting pasts that build their present. A read well worth the time.
