50 Shades of Fur by Missy Barkalot – Spotlight and Giveaway

This stop is part of a tour organized by Goddess Fish Promotions.  The author will be awarding a signed copy of 50 Shades of Fur by Missy Barkalot, as told to Belinda Stevens to a randomly drawn winner via the rafflecopter at the end of this post during the tour.

A delightful, yet somewhat bawdy “tail” about Missy Barkalot, a petite rust-colored long-haired Dachshund and the apple of her eye, Humphrey B (aka “Hump”), and the other characters, both dogs and cats, who are frequent guests at Doggie Bath. Missy is pursued by Ralph the Bulldog, but she only has eyes for Hump, who was seduced by the glamorous toy poodle, CoCo. It turns out CoCo was a victim of her environment, as her owner had some kinky habits using a gray tie. Bondage with leashes, bite marks, jive-talking cats and cross-dressing Dobermans – not to mention a Doggie Blues band – keep the story rolling as Missy Barkalot uses her feminine wiles to woo Hump away from CoCo. DoggieBath has a little bit of everything – sexual intrigue, rock-n-roll and blues – canine style, and of course, a little weed. This fun romp through the world of Missy and Hump make a “furfect” read! If you love animals, you will love “50 Shades Of Fur.”

Enjoy an excerpt:

You would think it was Valentine’s day, the way the romances were emerging among the guests at Doggie Bath. It was obvious something was going on between Roxie and Bubba. She followed him around without her herd of Spaniels and Bubba didn’t seem to mind. The two spent hours softly growling, licking each other’s faces and of course, you know. Everyone was happy they were an item, not to mention the welcomed end to cougar stalking. Without their leader, the over-the-hill gang disbanded. Those females started looking for fur separately.

Even Lance found love with a two-year-old German Shepherd. They shared a water bowl, and wore matching pink and purple outfits. Lance’s new love fit right in with the Blues Dogs. His name was Mozart and he was musical. It wasn’t long before he joined the group. Those paws of his could bang out some serious R & B on the ivories.

Belinda J. Stevens was born in Yazoo City, Mississippi, the gateway to the Mississippi Delta, in 1948. She grew up in the turbulent sixties, and has a true appreciation for the difficulties experienced Katherine in her first novel, “Just Out of Reach.” A radical departure from her first novel, her lastest effort is a fun parody, “50 Shades of Fur by Missy Barkalot, as told to Belinda Stevens.”

An attorney by profession, Belinda tells the story of young love and dark secrets in the world of the Doggie Bath. Canines, cats and even a skunk with a prestigious lineage converge for a bawdy “tale” that will keep you laughing.

Belinda is a graduate of Belhaven University and earned a Masters in Social Science and a Law Degree from Mississippi College. From 1987-1997 she served as Special Assistant to Mississippi Attorney General Mike Moore. She resides in Brandon, Mississippi with her dog Humprey B., and practices law in Yazoo City where she is a Public Defender.

But he must stay focused, especially when his invention could change the course of the War-Between-the-States.

This steampunk romance is set in Montana in the days of the war between the states. Prudence, a war widow with an independent streak, travels to Jubilee to take up the post of secretary to the inventor Gerritt Rhinehart. She assumes this gentleman to be a crusty old professor, boy was she in for a surprise.

Likewise Gerritt assumes she is old maidish which is good as women who come to Jubilee tend to become wives in a very short time due to the lack of women.  Love blossoms, but they try unsuccessfully to fight their feelings for each other.

This is a great story of an almost elastic relationship as the main characters are drawn together then pull apart. In the background the war casts a shadow on Jubilee and a traitor in the town is attempting to steal Gerritt’s plans for a war machine and this also puts Prudence in danger.

Ms Stone introduces the heat of passion and the frustrations which come from this passion in a very intriguing manner. Add to this the danger of being in the middle of nowhere with the enemy coming closer and the tension builds to breaking point. Most steampunk books are set in Victorian England so one set in historic America makes a pleasant, fresh change.

Nicely done Ms Stone, the controversy between hero and heroine kept me reading with interest.

Lena’s not willing to take any crap from the sexy rocker and is determined to keep their relationship completely professional, despite their sizzling chemistry. But when Jimmy pushes her too far and Lena leaves, he realizes that he may just have lost the best thing that ever happened to him.

The third novel in the Stage Dive series features the lead singer, former alcoholic and drug addict and all around jerk, Jimmy Ferris. Lena Morrisey has the task of keeping him clean and sober. If Jimmy seems like the sort of a guy who lets no one tell him what to do, Lena is certainly the sort of a woman who can change that. It shows pretty fast into their ‘business arrangement’ that he can’t help but accept her help with her smartass comments, her pugnacity and gentle intelligence. They are an unlikely pair, but turn out to be surprisingly similar and compatible.

Lead is not as laugh-out-loud funny as Play since Jimmy is a far darker character than Mal, but this infuses the story with a delicious sort of tension. It’s not just the conflicts between Jimmy and Lena and her growing feelings for him that draw the reader, it’s also that as a spectator you’ll root for Jimmy to find his peace and to cope with all the pain and self-loathing. Lena, of course, is just the feisty girl that can help him with it.

Due to the complex situation between Jimmy and Lena, the first love scenes appear only well into the second half of the novel, but they are that much more in character and fantastic. Despite the way they come to happen, they don’t feel forced. Besides, they lead to the major conflict at the end, leaving the protagonists heartbroken, and the reader hungry for a happy resolution.

What made this novel less good than Play was the ending. Seeing what a dark, troubled character Jimmy is, I had difficulty envisioning an ecstatically happy ending for him and Lena, so the conclusion felt a bit rushed. Maybe with a slower finish, a longer build-up to it, it would have felt more believable. I was also bothered by the number of typos that appeared throughout the novel; they were quite distracting.

With Lead offering another sinfully delicious insight into the world of Stage Dive, I now eagerly await big boy Ben’s story, Deep.

Isabella Aldridge has brains, bravado, and beauty—but the latter is no use to a servant. Her circumstances are desperate, and with Hepplewood’s words ringing in her ears, Isabella realizes she must barter her most marketable asset . . . her body.

But when fate sends Isabella back into Hepplewood’s arms, the earl must make an impossible choice—draw Isabella down into his sensual darkness, or behave with honor for the first time in his life.

Isabella Aldridge is desperate. Her job as a governess has ended. She has two younger sisters to support, no funds, and no prospects except for a sleazy cousin. The man she just interviewed with, Anthony Chalfont, the Earl of Hepplewood, offered her a position, but it wasn’t as governess. Angry and disillusioned, she returns to her former employer to ask advice. The woman, who is notorious in her own right, suggests that Isabella needs to marry or find a wealthy protector. Isabella is a widow, and has no desire to marry again, so she resigns herself to becoming a mistress. She contacts a broker who makes these kinds of arrangements, and soon sets off to the country home of none other than the Earl of Hepplewood. Ironically, he was so taken with her looks at their initial meeting, that he commissioned the same broker to find him a mistress with her unique violet eyes and dark hair. It turns out that he gets the real thing, not a facsimile.

The Earl, Anthony, is a complex character. There are some tragic events in his past that have changed him. Although he is still mostly a kind man, he also is dominating and controlling. And he’s determined to flee any kind of emotional entanglement. After just one night, he knows he’s in danger of feeling more than just lust for Isabella, so for his own self preservation, he sends her away, but with a small fortune in jewels. Isabella is bewildered at being cast aside. Although she had been married, it was very brief, and she didn’t have much sexual experience. One night with Anthony gave her a whole new perspective, but she accepts that it’s probably for the best, so she uses the jewels to start a small book store and set up a new home for her and her sisters. But Anthony can’t stay away.

I found Anthony to be a real hero. I love his strength, his protectiveness of Isabella. He is off the charts HOT! Isabella was so well written, as well. She is honest, beautiful, loving, and even willing to sacrifice herself to keep her family together. There was a lot of going back and forth in this book about Isabella and Anthony being together, then not together. That’s something that normally annoys me, but in this case it just worked. The author does a great job of showing us the conflict and confusion each of them is feeling. There is also a mystery, and some danger, and it all comes together perfectly. A word of warning without giving too much away – the sex in this book is not all vanilla. If you are offended by elements of BDSM, you may want to avoid it. Normally, I wouldn’t choose to read a book with those elements, but it fits the people that Anthony and Isabella are, and it works.

This is a strong book that will go on my favorites list for this year. It’s hot, it’s emotional, it’s romantic, and the story just flows beautifully. The author, Liz Carlyle, stretched the typical boundaries of historical romance with this book, and in my opinion, it’s one of her best. It all comes down to a beautiful love story of two wounded people who are perfect for each other, and deserve their well earned happy ever after. Highly recommended!

Pivot and Slip by Lilah Suzanne – Q&A and Giveaway

This post is part of a virtual book tour organized by Goddess Fish Promotions. Lilah will be awarding a $25 Barnes and Noble GC to a randomly drawn winner via rafflecopter during the tour. A free download of an Interlude Press eBook title or an author/book swag pack (US ONLY) will be awarded to one randomly drawn winner via rafflecopter at each stop during the tour.

Lilah, thanks so much for stopping by. So, why don’t you tell us a little about yourself? How did you get started writing?

I first realized that writing might be something I was good at in the fourth grade when a journal I kept as a school assignment during a family vacation delighted my teacher so much that she made a point of telling my parents to encourage me (like I needed encouragement!) I started writing as something more than just for fun when I had an essay published in a magazine for AIDS activism when I was eleven.

What was the inspiration for your book?

I was initially intrigued by the idea of a love story between athletes as something that hasn’t been done a lot and the sort of opposites-attract notion of a yoga instructor falling for a boxer. But I also wanted to explore this idea of dreams and failures and what both of those things really mean.

What’s the one genre you haven’t written in yet that you’d like to?

I’ve been thinking about taking a stab at a superhero story, a hero’s journey with a twist sort of thing.

Are there any genres you won’t read or write in? Why?

Not really. If it’s a good story, I’m in.

So, what are you working on right now? Got any releases planned, or still writing?

I’m actually just starting the editing process for my second book, “Spice.” It’s a romantic comedy about a sex-advice columnist who’s struggling a bit with his own love life. That will be out early next year.

Alright, now for some totally random, fun questions. Favorite color?

Blue

Favorite movie?

Ghostbusters

Book that inspired you to become an author?

I don’t know that any one book inspired me, but I was huge reader as a child and always had several books going at once! I feel like I’m constantly saying, “this was my favorite book when I was little!”

Alright, you have one superpower. What is it?

Flying, but safely. Like I don’t want to accidentally get caught up in a flock of migrating geese and seriously injure myself.

You can have dinner with any 3 people, dead, alive, fictitious, etc. Who are they?

Walt Whitman
Maya Angelou
Beyonce

Last question: Which of your characters are you most like and how/why?

I think I’m a lot like Jack in that it’s sometimes easier for me to keep my hurt and failures locked up tight, like I need to keep them safe instead of dealing with them and moving on.

That’s all from me, thanks so much for taking the time to stop by!

Thank you for having me!

8_19 Cover_PivotAndSlipFormer Olympic hopeful Jack Douglas traded competitive swimming for professional yoga and never looked back. When handsome pro boxer Felix Montero mistakenly registers for his Yoga for Seniors class, Jack takes an active interest both in Felix’s struggles to manage stress and in his heart, and discovers along the way that he may have healing of his own to do.

Faced with the ghosts of his athletic aspirations, can Jack return to his old dream or carve out a new path, and will their budding romance survive the test of Felix’s next bout in the ring?

Enjoy an excerpt:

“I’m a boxer,” Felix said. Then his face twisted. “Or I was, anyway.”

Something flashed across Felix’s eyes, then, and Jack could see his jaw clamp tightly again, working and clenching. His breath came in shallow puffs through his flaring nostrils and he seemed visibly to be trying to calm himself.

Instinctively, Jack grasped Felix’s free hand and stretched it across the distance between them to set it gently against his own abdomen. Jack could feel soft tremors shaking through Felix’s fingers, the vibrations pulsing through Jack’s T-shirt. Felix’s eyes widened as Jack took a deep breath, filling his diaphragm and then his lungs, and let it out steadily.

“Breathe,” he instructed, and inhaled again, nodding when Felix started to follow along. They breathed together, a slow circuit in and out and in, and Jack could see how Felix seemed to be calming bit by bit with every exhalation, his shoulders and neck loosening, his hand going lax and stretching wide across Jack’s stomach from the bottom curve of his ribcage down to his belly button.

Jack focused on sending him a calming energy, passing it out from his body into Felix’s, until Felix’s eyes blinked closed and his mouth parted and Jack found himself completely thrown off by the thickness of Felix’s eyelashes and the plump curve of his mouth.

Jack’s breath hitched on an inhalation and Felix startled and opened his eyes, the ice pack falling to the ground with a soft thump. And when his hand flexed over Jack’s stomach and he dropped his gaze to Jack’s lips and back up, his eyes heavy-lidded and dark, the energy hummed and crackled between them.

The first scene in “Welcome to Omni-Mart” made me gasp. Leonard, a lifetime employee of Omni-Mart, has been instructed to destroy an aisle full of lifelike dolls that grow and learn the same way that human children do. Digging into Leonard’s complicated, sad backstory made me wish his tale could have been expanded into a full-length novel. He’s fascinating character who lives in a world I’d never want to visit. Reading about it, though, made me shudder.

There were very few missteps in this anthology. “Texting the Apocalypse” records the conversation between two oblivious teenage girls as their world begins to fall apart. The premise of their chat is a great one, but it was too short to convey everything that was going on around them. As much as I wanted to enjoy it, I had trouble getting too deeply invested in what was happening to them due how little they had to say about it.

Sometimes unforgettable things come in small packages.“The Villain” follows two young boys who are arguing over which one of them is the hero and which one is the sidekick. It’s difficult to say anything more about them since the whole thing takes places in one short page of dialogue, but the ending caught me by surprise in the best way possible.

Don’t skip the introduction to this collection. Mr. Bridges had a unique reason for writing all of these stories, and knowing what it was made me enjoy them even more than I might have otherwise. This section also gives the reader a glimpse of the author’s occasionally cheeky sense of humor. I wasn’t expecting to laugh as much as I did, so having a hint about what to expect ahead of time was nice.

Justice, Inc. is a fantastic choice for anyone who loves the dystopian side of science fiction.

As old truths are revealed, will Cara and Finn overcome the mistakes of the past, trust their hearts at last, and take a chance on love?

Since she was in school, Cara has known exactly what she wanted when she grew up: Michael Finnegan. This is the spicy rendition of her getting to know him in more than his capacity as a football player and it’s just as sweaty as a ball game!

Michael is famous, sexy and talented but more than a little insecure with a failed marriage behind him. This is refreshing in a romance as the man is not completely stable and confident all the time. Cara is the one in these pages who knows what she wants and doesn’t waiver, even if she is a little bad at expressing herself.

However, the reason for Michael’s reluctance to commit, beyond his failed marriage, is unclear. He often seems stone-headedly stubborn and I did wish there was deeper reason for this reluctance to have a relationship extending beyond one-night-stands. I also felt that Cara’s humiliating experience at school which caused her to move away from her home town as soon as she could needed more to the dramatisation in order for the depth of her embarrassment and her resulting reactions to be more realistic.

Despite these small faults, the sex scenes had me sweltering and heady and the chemistry between these two very intelligent characters is steamy as a fogged up car in winter. This is not just a honeymoon romance but a meeting of two like souls who fit each other well mentally and physically, as a real romance should.

What is Kevin’s connection to the eerie stranger who offers Danna everything she could ever want in life—in return for her soul?

The Devil and Danna Webster revolves around family and love life of fifteen year old Danna Webster. Danna lives with her mother and stepdad, but she feels that there are some secrets in her family. She is a shy and withdrawn, but not naïve, girl with only one good friend. Therefore, Danna is very surprised when suddenly she becomes point of interest of two completely different boys from the senior class. Both of them are cute, and while one is dark haired bad boy – Kevin, the other is blond haired and (of course) good boy – Gar. Although this situation is totally new to her, Danna handles it very well. Also she handles well the truth that her family was hiding for her.

I have not read The Devil and Tom Walker by Washington Irving nor The Devil and Daniel Webster by Stephen Vincent Benet so I cannot draw any parallels between these three stories. Also I understand that The Devil and Danna Webster is allegorical story, but I cannot see why the author introduces the devil in order to tempt Danna. The temptation part could be done without devil, and the story would be still charming.

Regardless of this I find The Devil and Danna Webster a nice and interesting coming of age story. I like that it deals with the issue of making the clever and right choices. And although this book is more suitable for teenagers than for gown ups who like to read YA, I am glad that I read it.

Male and female witches, vampires and werewolves… this is definitely a paranormal novel. Josh and his friend Nancy search for the fur from a werewolf to save Josh’s sister who has let her vampire boyfriend bite her. The dangerous mission ends in disaster and Nancy returns home alone, carrying the precious fur to make the potion cure. Josh has been bitten by the werewolf and the pack must decide whether to let him live or die.

This tale of darkness also has the angst of teenage romance. Josh and Nancy, Sandy and Eric, Rebecca and Jake. These teenagers tumble through the throes of fascination, lust and sometimes love while battling the temptations of being a werewolf or witch and in some cases revelling in the change to wolf.

Josh starts out as a brave young man but he seems to wilt as the story progresses. Nancy becomes stronger with each page but the other characters don’t change at all which tends to make the main plot slightly unbalanced.

The book is well written but in places where excitement builds, it tends to lack vitality when the peak is reached. The story is good, just needs a little more oomph.  Still, it’s a good introduction to paranormal romance for younger young adults.

Hola, Lovelies!

I’m so honored you stopped by to learn a little about me and my first CYOA (Choose Your Own Romance) A Soldier’s Seduction. With the different possible choices—for both the reader and for myself—this was such a fun story to write. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do. 😉

I’d also like to thank my wonderful host for having me here today. You so totally rock!

1. Please describe your hero, from A Soldier’s Seduction, in three words.

Soldier.

Sexy.

Alpha.

2. Which of your characters would you most like to invite to dinner and why?

Brock Michaels from His Forbidden Submissive. He’s a Dom with a heart of gold.

As if that alone wasn’t enough, he’s also a bad boy. Tattoos everywhere. Shaved head. Muscles big enough he could probably bench press a small mountain. *fans self*

3. Who I’d least like to invite to dinner?

Probably Kaia from my first book Tempted. She’s a fallen angel with a particularly nasty side. She likes to “inspire” humans to do terrible things. In Tempted, she tries to get the heroine to commit suicide.

Yeah, Kaia’s one nasty b*tch.

4. What scene, in particular, from A Soldier’s Seduction are you dying for readers to read?

Hmmm, that one’s hard, especially with four possible endings!

But I’d have to choose, I’ll pick the end of the “bedroom” scene, where the hero *spoilers* (and if you read that in River Song’s voice, we’re now best friends, LOL!) confesses his love, and the heroine just can’t quite believe it. She stares up at him in disbelief…

Love it. 🙂

5. Which usually comes first for you, the character(s) story or the idea for the novel?

The sex.

I don’t mean that in a crass way, LOL. I’m referring to the heat between the characters. That’s what draws me to them and makes me want to write their story. I’ve built entire stories around an initial sex scenes.

6. How many books have you published? Which is your favorite and why?

Currently published at the time I write this: 7 (with 2 more contracted).

And now you want me to choose my favorite? I’m not sure I can.

Tempted was my first story, so it will always have a special spot in my heart. His Forbidden Submissive has my favorite character, Brock. A Soldier’s Seduction was my first foray into CYOA. Tyler, one of the hero’s from In the Middle of Nowhere, has been so emotional and physically scarred, he makes me feel terrible for crafting such a painful backstory for him.

So yeah, please don’t make me choose!

7. If someone were to write a biography about you, what do you think the title should be?

The Voices Made Her Do It.

8. Do you prefer ebooks, paperbacks or hardcover? Any specific reason why?

Ebooks almost exclusively.

With my lap occupied by Kidlet2 so much of the time, one-handed reading is just easier. Plus, now that Amazon has merged their Audible app with their Kindle app, I can now listen to the stories or read them without losing my place in either. I can’t begin to tell you how much I love that.

9. Do you have a question for our readers?

What is your favorite genre of romance? What is your least favorite? Please leave your answers in the comments!

10. Do you have any other projects in the works? If so, can you share a little of your current work with us?

Yes!

I’ve signed with Silk Words for another CYOA story, tentatively titled Uniform Seduction. It’s set in the same world as A Soldier’s Seduction and features Gen’s best gal pal, Lily Collins, as she has to decide between two equally yummy soldier’s.

I’m also working on first-round edits for a military-themed m/m erotic romance for Loose Id. The story’s called In the Middle of Nowhere, and is tentatively set for an October release.

8_18 brandi Cover_ASoldiersSeductionWhen Gen learns her best guy friend is going back to Afghanistan, she arranges an erotic sendoff he’ll never forget.

GENEVIEVE FOSTER can no longer deny the truth. She’s fallen in love with her business partner and best friend, LIAM ENGLAND. She’s hesitant to tell him the truth, at least until she learns his National Guard unit is going back to the Middle East. Now, all bets are off. She heads to the mall for the perfect erotic outfit. And by outfit, she, of course, means lingerie. A dark blue baby-doll for an intimate evening in or a leather bustier for a night of sinful pleasures at The Erogenous Zone…

Enjoy an excerpt:

“Are you ever going to un-blindfold me?”

“Maybe,” I teased, praying my nervousness didn’t leak through.

Taking Liam by the hands, I tugged him from the passenger’s seat of my Ford Escape. I’d given my handsome companion only one clue about tonight’s adventure — to wear something sexy — and damn if Liam hadn’t delivered.

A pair of black sheen slacks covered his legs, and the light blue button-down I’d given him on his last birthday had beautifully brought out the azure of his eyes. I’d hated to cover them with the blindfold, but it couldn’t be helped.

He’d shaved and cut his hair, his blond locks sporting an Army crew cut, making him look strong, virile, a vision of alpha-tastic yumminess. He’d no doubt fit right in inside The Erogenous Zone. Lord knew he was doing a number on my erogenous zones.

My heart had been doing the samba since I’d knocked on Liam’s door. I’d had to employ every self-restraint trick I’d known — as well as several I’d invented on the fly — just to keep from jumping him right then and there. I’d put a lot of planning into our erotic outing, and I didn’t want to derail everything because I couldn’t control myself.

Liam had talked about coming to The Erogenous Zone since the club had opened, but reservations were few and far between. He’d asked me to come with him. I’d been thrilled until I’d learned his request probably had more to do with the fact couples had less of a waiting list than single males. Still, I liked to believe Liam had wanted to go with me because he wanted me at his side.

“There’s a step here,” I said as we left the shadows of the parking lot behind and moved into the soft glow of the club’s outside lighting. Liam held tight to me as we stepped over the curb and onto the path leading to the entrance. The club loomed large and imposing in front of us, an enormous brick building with graffiti spray-painted on the sides. According to the website, the place had been an abandoned warehouse before the owner had repurposed it, and from where we stood, an abandoned warehouse was exactly what it still looked like.

As we reached the entrance, a man the size of a small mountain approached us. He wore all black, save for a tiny splash of color on the right pocket. Written in multi-hued lettering, the club’s logo stood out against the dark background. Two full sleeves of tattoos covered his arms. Metal studs pierced his eyebrows, his nose, his lips — all in multiple places.

“Do you have a reservation?” The bouncer’s voice reverberated, a deep, gravelly resonance I swore I could feel inside my bones.

I swallowed hard, hoping to displace the unease suddenly bottlenecking in my throat. “Yes. For Genevieve Foster. Plus one.”

Muscles glanced at his clipboard and then opened the door. “This way, Ms. Foster. If you’ll see Rachel at the front desk, she’ll get you checked in.”

I nodded. The reality of the moment bitch-slapped me. I was about to take my best guy friend into a sex club so I could seduce him. Our entire relationship hinged on what would happen in the next few moments. I could finally have the man I loved in my arms, or I could lose a dear friend forever.

Things hadn’t seemed this real in the planning phase.

About the Author: 8_18 brandi AuthorAvatar

Brandi Evans was raised by a caravan of traveling Gypsies. She spent her days learning the ways of her people and her nights lost in legends as old as time. Okay, not really, but that’s way more interesting than the truth!

In reality, Brandi grew up the oldest child of an ordinary family. Grade school, middle school, high school. Nothing extraordinary happened until she left the nest. She joined the military, went to college, got married, and became a mom. And somewhere along the way, she discovered she liked to read—and write!—stories hot enough to melt eReaders.

These days, she calls The Natural State home where she lives with her hubby, two beautiful daughters, two dogs and a cat who has yet to realize she doesn’t own the place. Soldier. Wife. Mom. Multi-published smut writer. Brandi’s life might not be “traveling Gypsy” interesting, but she’s had fun. And in the end, isn’t that all that really matters?
