From the author of At the Mercy of the Queen comes the gripping tale of Mary Shelton, Elizabeth I’s young cousin and ward, set against the glittering backdrop of the Elizabethan court.

Mistress Mary Shelton is Queen Elizabeth’s favorite ward, enjoying every privilege the position affords. The queen loves Mary like a daughter, and, like any good mother, she wants her to make a powerful match. The most likely prospect: Edward de Vere, Earl of Oxford. But while Oxford seems to be everything the queen admires: clever, polished and wealthy, Mary knows him to be lecherous, cruel, and full of treachery. No matter how hard the queen tries to push her into his arms, Mary refuses.

Instead, Mary falls in love with a man who is completely unsuitable. Sir John Skydemore is a minor knight with little money, a widower with five children. Worst of all, he’s a Catholic at a time when Catholic plots against Elizabeth are rampant. The queen forbids Mary to wed the man she loves. When the young woman, who is the queen’s own flesh and blood, defies her, the couple finds their very lives in danger as Elizabeth’s wrath knows no bounds.

The author weaved fact and fiction, blending it seamlessly to create one truly entertaining story. The fact that the story was based around Queen Elizabeth I was what initially intrigued me, and I must say I was not disappointed.

Mary is the queen’s ward from a young age, and as such the Queen has raised her as if she was her own child. From the very beginning I was interested and entertained by Mary. She clearly lived a life of privilege, and had no real idea of what commoners were experiencing during this period, yet she never seemed to forget how lucky she was to be viewed as one of the Queen’s favored. Though she may not always agree with the Queen, it is clear her love for her never truly waivers.

Sir John, on the other hand, had lived the life of a commoner. While he was not poor he knew what life struggles are about, especially when left a widower with five children. Yet, he still sees what even the Queen can recognize: Mary is someone special who should be cherished. When she starts to show him favor it is clear he does not take that attention lightly and will do whatever it takes to win her heart and keep her safe above all others.

The love story is entertaining in this, but it more of a coming of age story than a romance. Mary and her relationships, including the ones with the Queen, Sir John and other suitors is a key in the plot. While this only follows a few short years in Mary’s life, it is clear these are the most influential years in her life. It also gave me a glimpse of the time in which Mary lived.

This story has some historically accurate portrayals including people and events. Religion during this period is a driving force behind many in the story, and plays a key role in everyone including Mary’s life. I really enjoyed that the author really tried to keep the story as accurate as possible while still entertaining. I could tell from the very beginning that some of the events took place, even if the timeframes may have changed a bit to make it more entertaining. I has truly impressed by the amount of knowledge the author was able to incorporate, and it left me wanting more. While I have not read the author’s previous story about this time period I most certainly plan on picking it up. This is a story I believe anyone would enjoy no matter if they enjoy history or just want an entertaining story.

New York Times bestselling author Jennifer Ashley continues her Shifters Unbound series with the tale of a hot hunk of a bear Shifter on the hunt for a mate…

Cormac has been moving from one Shiftertown to the next in search of a mate. Now he’s in Southern Nevada, where a beautiful, unmated bear Shifter greets him…with a shotgun in her hands.

But when her sons are endangered and she desperately needs help protecting them, Cormac proves he’s worthy of her trust as well as her desire.

A quick novella that dives back into the wonderful world of Shifters Unbound, a series that is wonderfully built and well done. It has it all, rich history, great characters, and new surprises always popping up.

This is an older novella, but it had the same chemistry between Nell and Cormac I’ve come to expect. And the way and the reasons that Cormac seeks out Nell is just plain romantic and well done.

There is a bit of suspense thrown in with some bad humans and bad shifters that allow Cormac to show that he really means it when he says he loves Nell, and will protect her and her sons. I really enjoyed this story, yes it is quick, and Nell and Cormac fall for each other fast, but when it’s right it’s right. These two are definitely right and meant for each other.

Just enough history and story to satisfy old friends of the series, and enough of a taste of the author’s writing style and the world of shifters to hook in new readers. Ms. Ashley has a written a fabulous story to showcase her world all the while only being a short enough read to whet your appetite for more.

Mira is a young, innocent cave girl who can’t imagine that marriage would ever be for her. And when her father chooses Regus, a weakling to her eyes, she is close to running away from home.

Before she can marry, she must learn what being a woman in the stone age is all about.

And when the wedding night arrives, she discovers that it’s not all about killing saber-tooth cats and that what waits beneath Regus’ furs can give her a lot more pleasure.

Finding passion in an arranged marriage doesn’t seem very likely, especially when the person Mira’s father has chosen for her is the exact opposite of her ideal man.

Mira is a stubborn protagonist whose tendency to expect the worst out of life sometimes left me shaking my head. She quickly becomes likable, though, and even her worst faults were never overblown or excused. Ms. MacKinnon presents a healthy balance of positive and negative traits in her characters, Mira included.

It would have been helpful to know more about how Mira’s society is organized. It appears to be formed out of several loosely affiliated tribes who get together for special occasions, but I was never quite sure how it all works. At a few different points during this tale, Mira talks about things that seem out of place for the world in which she’s grown up. While none of them are necessarily impossible in a prehistoric setting, encountering so many of them pulled me out of the plot as I wondered what was going on with them.

Sometimes it takes a while for the right chemistry to form between two people. This realistic approach to a very ancient tradition made a lot of sense for Mira and Regus’ introduction. Something this length doesn’t leave a great deal of room for the characters to get to know one another slowly, but I was impressed by how smoothly the author indicated the passage of time to take advance of every inch of writing space that was available to her.

Loving a Caveman is a unique tale that snagged my attention as soon as I read the blurb for it. It’s a quick read that left this audience member wanting more.

“Sticks and Stones can break my bones ….” Despite what the old children’s rhyme says, words can cause grievous harm. A lesson ex-con Hollis Morgan, a casualty of her deceased ex-husband’s white collar crimes, knows all too well. Now that she has received an official pardon, she is free to pursue her dreams of moving up in the world from paralegal to attorney.

While awaiting the results of the bar exam, she hopes to clear the name of a friend accused of libel by philanthropist Dorian Fields, a man whose charitable giving looks a lot like money-laundering. Only problem: the evidence has disappeared and her friend Catherine is found dead. Although initially thought a suicide, Hollis’ friend was murdered. Catherine was writing an article about Fields for a tabloid. Hollis and attorney Mark Haddan convince the magazine to let them carry on with the libel defense, but they have fewer than 60 days to prove Catherine’s exposé was well-founded. In the meantime Hollis has other distractions; she is also helping to settle the estate of Margaret Koch, a rich client of the law firm whose impetuous actions as revealed in her letters still embitter the lives of those she left behind. And then there are the two men vying for her attention—one a police detective, the other a private eye.

One of them is not only a liar, but a killer.

Hollis Morgan, a paralegal who has just taken the bar exam, receives a late night call from her good friend, Cathy Briscoe, begging for help. Cathy has been accused of libel and needs Hollis to help her gather more evidence. Hollis tells her friend that she needs to think about it as she is too tired to make a decent decision. Cathy is disappointed but Hollis promises that they will meet in the morning. Unfortunately, that is too late for Cathy, who is found dead the next day of an apparent suicide. It doesn’t take long for the police to realize that in fact, Cathy was murdered, but Hollis is filled with remorse that she didn’t tell Cathy right away that she would help. Hollis is now determined to clear her friend’s name even while she is swamped with work at her job.

This is a fast paced mystery with lots going on. I liked Hollis a lot, and I thought her character was very well developed. She ends up having to juggle two mysteries. Not only is she trying to clear her friend’s name, but her boss has her working on a probate case. I enjoyed watching Hollis in action and seeing how she would get ideas for one case from the other, working hard to solve both.

Hollis is helped in her efforts to clear Cathy’s name by Mark Haddan, an attorney who was also a friend to Cathy. Since Hollis hasn’t found out yet whether or not she has passed the bar exam, she needs a qualified lawyer, and Mark does respect Hollis, but I found his character to be a bit flat. I honestly wasn’t sure which side of things he was on.

I really liked the human touches that are brought into the story. Hollis finds a box of letters written to the dead woman in her probate case and I learned a lot about Hollis from the way in which she reacted to the letters. She goes way beyond what was required for her job to see that the outcome of the case is what it should be.

Hollis also comes in contact with a young man named Vince, “a revering addict on the other side of withdrawals.” Hollis buys him lunch several times and when he asks her why she is being so nice, she answers, “Because I could.”

Readers are sure to be captured by this plot-twisting, exciting mystery. It is a real page turner and I certainly am going to keep reading this series.

As the odd hallucinations evolve and become clearer, she feels a strong pull towards the people she sees there. Frightened, she watches her once stable life begin to crumble around her and she begins to question her own sanity.

Could it be possible that these episodes are actually her own memories of a life she is living somehow, somewhere, some-when? Maybe this is time-travel or some other paranormal mysticism? Our minds often wander, but can our souls?

Essence is a novel with a very interesting concept that tells of a genetic gift passed on through family members. Jocelyn Timmons is a normal high school student in the year 2009. When a new neighbor moves in by the name of Jackson Chandler, her life changes to something more than normal. Just the simple touch of Jackson causes Jocelyn to faint. During the fainting spells Jocelyn’s find herself living in the year 1878.

This is a deeply enjoyable novel that shows the author’s superb talent at story telling. I found the story fascinating and a joy to read. Such a warm romance with a speck of time travel and a mystic plot. Jocelyn’s family and friends are very concerned because the fainting seems to be happening more often. Jocelyn has narrowed down the cause of her fainting spells but never reveals her assumption to anyone. For Jocelyn to have such close family and dependable friends it really bothered me that she felt she could not confide in anyone about what was happening to her and what she was experiencing. During this time of the novel it seem to be long and slow. At some point after so many fainting spells I was wishing she would please tell someone so we can get this story moving along.

The 1878 story did not really seem to revolve around Jocelyn, instead it was more her brother William and her best friend and neighbor Olivia. I found this part less interesting as it was long and drawn out. Still, I continued to read to see how it all tied in. The author went into quite a bit of detail in the sub-story of William and Olivia and after reading it I was left wondering why was so much time spent on telling their story? After reading through Jocelyn’s brother story the novel continues and the 1878 Jocelyn finds out that she too can travel to a future time. By this time it is pretty much explained to the 2009 Jocelyn what is happen to her and why she is able to cross between different time eras.  I must mention that the servant’s dialogue was hard to understand in the year 1878.

As I stated this is an enjoyable novel, that I found very entertaining. Yes it had a few slow spots but they were never completely boring. The story still flowed and had my attention to continue reading. Without giving away the mystery of EVE, although this is a book of fiction, the explanation and idea really got me to thinking and wondering how neat it would be to live life in two different time eras. I am curious to see how the author carries the story on in the next installment. It is a series that I would likely follow.

If you enjoy a novel of young love, charged with an intriguing fantasy this is a novel you would not want to miss.

Dillon is that for Jack, and Jack is and always has been the man to stand up for Dillon.

I really rooted for these characters, I hurt right along with them. I also absolutely adored Jack’s mom, she’s everything that Jack needs and is a great other side of the coin from his father who at one point I really hated.

I will be watching this author and this series, it had great characters that had a healthy dose of real emotions and I felt those emotions so I can highly recommend this story because it did make me feel and love and I was happy in the end.

Too bad the fiercely independent interior designer wants nothing to do with him. Even worse, he’s forced to rely on the advice of his nosy brothers—and his five-year-old nephew!—to figure out how to make her give him a shot.

The Troublemaker Next Door is a very hot and sexy read but it also has a daunting job of world building to put all the players in place for the next heroine to find her HEA.

In this first book in the McCauley Brothers series, I met Flynn and Maddie. I have to admit, that the first time Flynn meets Maddie is quite memorable. A reader appreciates right away that the heroine is vocal, passionate, opinionated and rather loud – definitely a challenging heroine. That holds true for the rest of the novel.

Flynn on the other hand is a planner. He realizes just how special Maddie is and practices patience, to a degree. What the hero does do is seduce her and the techniques he uses are varied and inventive. To say that he is a hot specimen of a man is an understatement.

The basic conflict is internal and it mostly stems from Maddie’s side of the relationship. She has some growing to do and she has some family and friends that try to steer her in the right direction. They are a slightly manipulative bunch, but they mean well. Some of their schemes are rather amusing even if they don’t always work. It’s even more fun when they do.

Secondary characters are Flynn’s brothers and best friend Brody. Then there is Mike’s young son, who really stole the show in certain scenes. The dialogue was important in the novel because it helped flesh out their personalities and it showcased the roles they all played with regards to Maddie and Flynn.

A component that is explored in great inventive detail is Maddie and Flynn’s sexual relationship. Readers of erotic romances will find many interesting scenarios to enjoy. There is a bit of BDSM play, phone sex and role playing. Flynn rocks Maddie’s world because most of everything he does is new to her and she ends up discovering hidden sexual depths she never knew she had. Maddie finds out, with the right partner, sex is awesome. I liked watching her surprised pleasure with some of the things he tried. And I believe the only reason it worked so well is because the heroine truly was learning to trust the hero and that makes any sensual adventure in romance a success.

For readers who like a lot of bedroom action, this is a sure winner. For those like me who don’t require such varied adventures, the story doesn’t suffer from skipping a few of them. I think there might have been some experimentation with spanking and some anal teasing, but the romance and surrounding story is good enough on its own, I didn’t need to read every sexy encounter.

The Troublemaker Next Door is definitely a character driven romance. There is humor, laughter, emotional connections and a hero and heroine who strikes delightful sparks off of the other. It’s a fast easy read with a lot to enjoy. If the ending is to be a hint of who’s next, Abby is in for a big surprise. And it couldn’t happen to a nicer person. I can’t wait.

Trauma might as well be Samantha’s middle name. Her tumultuous childhood has left behind deep psychological scars that make themselves known from the beginning of this tale. Certain words and gestures that the average person would interpret as friendly or harmless carry much darker connotations to this character. What I found most interesting about her, though, were the brief glimpses of the young woman behind her emotional anguish. Samantha is a well-rounded protagonist whose raw reactions to everything she has endured so far are painfully realistic.

Uneven pacing shows up fairly early on. So much time was spent explaining Samantha’s backstory and showing how she adjusts to her new life that there wasn’t as much time left to explain all of the clues about her mother’s death that she discovers at each hit as I would have preferred to see. Even though it was full length, certain aspects of the plot felt like they weren’t given enough time to fully develop. This could have easily been a much longer story.

Far too often justice only applies to people who aren’t wealthy or powerful enough to outrun it. What I found most fascinating about this tale was how the assassins attempt to level the playing field by ending the lives of people who should have been stopped much sooner. The most memorable scenes discuss the morality of what Samantha and X are doing. From what I understand, there is a sequel in the works to The JAX Chronicles: Initiation, so I’m looking forward to seeing how the moral codes of these characters develop as they complete even more hits.

I was confused by some of the rules of this universe. Characters say one thing but then do another without a compelling explanation for their apparent change of heart. It was never quite clear to me if these reversals were intended to erase what had been previously revealed about those characters or if there was something untrustworthy about their personalities that I never picked up on.

As soon as I read the premise, I knew I had to give this novel a try. The idea of a teenager becoming an assassin is as riveting as it is disconcerting. Ms. Lemons embraces the dark side of Samantha’s new identity, and the results are inappropriate for anyone under the age recommendation. In some ways this didn’t sound much like a young adult novel at all given the violent setting and graphic flashbacks to Samantha’s childhood.

The JAX Chronicles: Initiation straddles the line between young adult and adult fiction. I’d particularly recommend it to anyone who is interested in dipping their toes into a young adult novel or who is ready to start reading something gritty.
