When environmentalism clashes with financial treachery, the results can be murder…

A nature advocate, Erin Archer, is working to restore a now-flooded and dammed up Hetch Hetchy Valley in the Yosemite National Park to its original state. When her father, a private investigator and experienced mountaineer, dies in a rock-climbing fall, Erin doesn’t believe it’s an accident. Determined to find the truth, she uncovers a connection between her father’s last case and Nick Oliver, a business intelligence analyst.

Fired from his job in San Francisco, Nick is seeking refuge in the coastal redwoods when Erin brings his solace to a jolting end. Even though he doesn’t think his work has any connection to her father’s death, Nick can’t resist her plea for help.

However, Nick and Erin’s sleuthing begins to make someone very nervous…and dangerous. Just how far is that someone willing to go to hide the truth?

Nick Oliver is fired from his job as a business intelligence analyst with no reasons given. Nick sees this as a chance to rethink the direction his life is going in and so he heads off to the coastal redwoods to relax and get a better perspective on his life. But then he meets Erin Archer who is convinced that her father’s death was not an accident and she asks Nick to help her find out who killed her father.

Switcheroo is an exciting, fast-paced mystery. Erin and Nick are both good detectives and they stir up a lot of trouble as they seek to find the answer to Erin’s father’s death. Soon they are being tailed and threatened by a pair of low life private eyes. I liked both Erin and Nick and I was quickly caught up in the mystery, trying to figure things out right along with them. The mystery takes a number of turns along the way, but I didn’t figure out who did it until the very end. The plot was well-crafted and the pacing was good.

There is also a wealth of environmental history given in the novel, and I found this both timely and interesting. In addition, the world of business intelligence analysis was revealed and again, it was a real eye-opener. While I was enjoying the mystery, I also learned a lot about both fields, and that makes for a great combination in my opinion.

The setting is described with excellent details so that I felt as if I were right in San Francisco or the coastal redwoods. The atmosphere is complete and very realistic. There are a number of minor characters, several of whom are portrayed with depth and richness so that the entire novel feels very lifelike and authentic.

Mystery lovers are sure to enjoy Switcheroo. Keeping track of the twists and turns as Nick and Erin try to solve the puzzle is a ride well worth taking.

Return to cowboy country in Fever, Texas, where the heat isn’t the only thing causing a fever! See if you can find the heirloom wedding band!

Seeing how unaffected Ken seemed by the loss of their child shook Karla’s whole world. He didn’t want to talk; didn’t even appear to grieve. The very next morning, he was back out on his horse, doing ranch work, and she couldn’t forgive him his ease in coping—especially when his work seemed to take over his entire life so she rarely saw him anymore. Devastated, Karla left him. Ken is the only man she’s ever loved, and, after five years apart, she knows she has to make a decision: wash her hands of their marriage, or confront him about the loss of their unborn daughter.

Ken never understood why Karla left him, and, the few times he’s contacted her, she’s been as cold and volatile as a rattlesnake. He can only believe she also blames him for the death of their unborn child. He allows her the silent separation, unwilling to risk her asking him for a divorce. The death of his daughter tore him to pieces. Losing Karla will finish him for sure.

When Ken shows up with her four brothers at the exotic dance club Karla’s been working as a waitress to make ends meet, she sees that he hasn’t changed at all—and she tells him she wants a divorce ASAP. Can Ken prove the loss of their child all but destroyed him and she’s still the only one for him?

The Only One dives into the story quickly and introduces us to Ken who has been ‘kidnapped’ by his wife’s brothers. Ken comes across as a real character, feeling the pain of separation, perhaps pending divorce. We feel more of his pain when he sees his wife working as a waitress in what appears to a sleazy bar. We’re also told that they lost a baby and as the story unfolds, begin to learn what happened from Karla’s viewpoint too.

I haven’t read any of the other books in the series so I’m not sure if these characters have been introduced before but I felt what could have been a very emotional story as they dealt with their pain, became rushed, and told rather than shown. I think had this been a longer story and more pages devoted to the theme of loss and recovery, it would have been a wonderful read.

Apart from that, the dialogue is natural sounding and the setting perfect. And if you’re looking for a quick read about a hot cowboy this might be one for you.

Corporal Jacqs Glebov is a simple soldier who wants a bunk, decent food and the company of other battle-hardened men and women who understand the realities of fighting. Instead he’s stuck patrolling a remote corner of the border with cadets straight out of boot camp. They don’t understand him, and he sure doesn’t have an ounce of respect for them.

After a field promotion, Earth sends Commander Zeke Waters to the Candiru for some practical experience in a leadership role. Instead, Zeke falls in lust with the adamantly heterosexual Jacqs. The way Jacqs fights and the way he sees the world draws Zeke closer, even if common sense tells him to walk away.

Even if they can find a way to find to reconcile their sexual differences, they are both still soldiers. The war will eventually take them away from each other unless they can find a way to escape the rules that have defined their lives.

Sometimes you just need a man to turn your head. Jacqs is as content as he can be as the ship’s pariah and often sexual harasser. He’s tried to get with all the women but is usually turned down. He’s never thought about the men before so when a sexy new officer comes on the ship and starts to shake things up, Jacqs is surprised but intrigued by their instant chemistry and connection. Not one to let a little thing like turning gay slow him down, Jacqs throws him into the new relationship. It’s all fun and sex games until the war starts to come dangerously close to their new home.

Turbulence is a weighty book. Not just in length but also in concept. There is quite a bit going on from the beginning. The first third of the book deals with establishing Jacqs and Zeke’s relationship. Jacqs has never been attracted to a man before and his newfound sexuality doesn’t trip him up the least. I found this part of the story to be the strongest. It’s interesting with a lot of good character development and world building. The science fiction world created is unique and goes into deep explanation of various sexual orientations. It seems this world has a much more inclusive labeling process, which I liked and found interesting. The concept of the war seemed very remote in this section and almost unimportant. Instead the focus is on Zeke and Jacqs getting together, which I almost sped read through it was so good.

From there the story slows down quite a bit as the two have a lot of sex and do very little else. This could be an inherent problem with sci-fi stories set on a space ship since the lack of action definitely comes into play. Here I found the story lagged and I struggled to keep my attention in the book at several points. Not that the writing wasn’t wonderful but that nothing really went on and the two main characters just had a lot of sex. That’s great but I wanted something to really happen. I soon got my wish as the absent war suddenly takes center stage and there is a flurry of activity. The writing and characterization surprisingly both picked up and I learned more about the men through their actions than I did while they were having lots of mind numbing sex. The action has a definite tipping point and leads to an unexpected outcome.

Although the story is somewhat up and down in terms of action and how it kept my attention, I did quite like reading it. The writing is clean, descriptive, and imaginative. All the characters, from minor to significant, feel important and fleshed out. The are no throw away people. The plot could have been more even throughout but honestly the incredibly strong start and solid finish helped me through any weak points in the middle. I would easily recommend this to sci-fi fans that want a substantial component of their story to be world building and there is definitely enough romance to please fans as well.

But the feelings don’t go away, and when she receives an offer for a decadent week on Submission Island, she knows she has to follow those feelings, wherever they lead. Tom isn’t sure why Julia left him, but when he finds her on Submission Island he jumps into the chance for a second chance. He’s prepared to find out what went wrong and how he can keep her.

Ms. Yssel writes a story that is both sweet and very erotic. It’s a great introduction to BDSM for new readers since nothing very hardcore happens. Instead there is a very sweet love story between Tom and Julia to propel this story forward, they obviously both love each other, and while they work hard to overcome Julia’s issues with begging they learn that it’s such a small roadblock in their path to happiness. There is a menage scene between Tom, Julia and another Dom that was very sexy and helped to define for Tom and Julia what they really want out of their relationship.

I highly recommend this story, it’s the perfect combination of sweet and hot and a great story for both new fans and veteran fans of BDSM romance.

Love and magic lie at the heart of this storm…as well as a whole lot of danger.

Brotherhood of Blood, Book 7

When Major Jesse Moore, brother to the Wyoming Pack Alpha, is sent to Iowa to check on his sister-in-law’s cousin, knocking politely isn’t an option. Sounds of a struggle send him storming into her kitchen—where he finds anything but a damsel in distress. The tiny human woman knows how to handle herself in a fight, and all Jesse’s senses shout she’s his mate.

Exotic-animal vet, Maria Garibaldi has never trusted the magic her aunt and grandmother claim is her birthright. She’s always known about the Others, but she had no idea she was also part of their world. When Maria sets out with Jesse to find the parents of a young grizzly shifter she found and treated, she learns the meaning of temptation in the form of the ex-Special Forces soldier.

As passion flares, the trail leads them toward the eye of a massive storm…where an unspeakable evil awaits the right moment to destroy the good in the magical world.

Wolf Quest is the latest of Bianca D’Arc’s Brotherhood of Blood books, and as with the others in this series, she is starting to bring together the threads of stories and crossing over from her Lords of the Were world as well.

When Jesse Moore and his team head to Iowa to check on his new sister-in-law’s cousin, his team gets there just in time to hear the sounds of a violent struggle in her home. But when he breaks down her kitchen door to help, he sees that the woman has things well in hand, having disabled one of her attackers and well on the way to stopping the other.

Maria Garibaldi is no stranger to magic, and she knows of the existence of shifters and other ‘mythical’ beings. But when Jesse tells her about her cousin, Maria is skeptical at first. When Jesse realizes something else, that Maria is his mate, he is determined to keep her safe. When they discover that she has been targeted by the evil Venifucus, he is more than ready to get her to safety. As they are checking out the animals in her sanctuary, Jesse discovers that one of her cages holds a wounded adolescent bear shifter, one of the most magical of the shifter species. Maria is stunned to learn this, and very embarrassed to have caged the young teen. When they learn that his parents were captured, and are being held and drained of their magic, Jesse and his team, along with Maria and Zach, head to the eye of the storm to rescue Zach’s parents and stop the deadly plans of the Venifucus. As they travel, Maria knows her destiny is with Jesse, if they can survive this ordeal, and she also discovers the magic in her bloodline. Can this team free the grizzlies and stop the evil from spreading? Will Maria accept a future with Jesse and magic in it? Is Maria ready to meet the extended family she never knew she had?

I enjoy catching up with prior characters and learning where they fit into the extended families of this world. The characters here are well defined, and the chemistry between Maria and Jesse is compelling.

Jesse Moore is every bit the alpha shifter, but with his background, he is better suited to the job he does, and is happy to leave the role of Alpha of the Wyoming pack to his brother. Jesse is the protector, the warrior who doesn’t do diplomacy well, and would rather fight his own and the pack’s battles with his chosen band of fighters. He is strong and loyal, determined to fight evil where he finds it. When he sees Maria waging her own battle against the agents of evil, he is impressed at first, and drawn to her on many levels. When his wolf recognizes its mate, Jesse is ready to fight for her, and claim her. I liked that Jesse accepted his wolf’s feelings, while trying to give Maria some time.

Doctor Maria Garibaldi knows about magic, and shifters, and comes from a more than human family. She just doesn’t know it. She is strong and independent, well able to take care of herself, but she is almost instantly drawn to Jesse. Although she has some doubts about the claim she is related to his sister in law, she keeps an open mind, and with Jesse’s help, discovers a depth to her more magical side that she never knew existed. I liked watching Maria grow into her magic and her passion for Jesse is so honest and open, it is a joy to watch.

There are several different storylines here, and all are quite intriguing. Ms. D’Arc brings everything to a satisfactory conclusion, while still indicating that, while beaten this time, the evil Venifucus is not yet out of the game. I liked how the threads of the stories overlapped a bit, and how relationships between the characters start to intertwine. There is the rescue of the bears, Jesse’s finding his mate, and Maria discovering her heritage linking her to people she liked and respected. This one is a hot and passionate romance, with lots of danger and action that kept me on the edge of my seat.

Battling witches, storms, explosions and ancient gods. It’s a good thing I have a foul mouth and a sarcastic attitude to see me through. Hang on to your hat it’s gonna be a wild ride.

Featuring eight gorgeous color pictures and an interactive table of contents Encounters ranges from dark fantasy to science fiction. Inside this book you will find resurrected soldiers, ancient gods, brutal killers and alien worlds.

Sometimes the most frightening moments in life take place during what at first appears to be completely ordinary circumstances.

I highly recommend reading these stories in the order in which they appear in the book. Two of them are set in the same universe, and it’s much easier to understand what is going on in the second one if you’ve already read the first. They are also all arranged carefully by tone, length, and to some extent subject matter.

“A Night Under the Stars” send a shudder down my spine. The dark tones are emphasized by how little the reader learns about the narrator or the dangerous man who shows up on his doorstep. Normally I prefer to know more about a character’s backstory, but in this case the mystery of their identities feeds into the quickly escalating tension beautifully. The sequel to this piece, “Monsters,” revisits the narrator when he’s once again faced with a different kind of danger. Both of them work best if they’re read in order and back- to-back. This is a character who really needs to be the star of his own series of adventures his own series. The handful of information I gleaned about his personality makes me eager to hear more from him.

The first few scenes of “Offerings” are deceptively slow-paced. I did not realize it was nearly novella length when I started reading, so it was easy to overlook the subtle hints about what was actually going on because the pacing felt so uneven. This tale needs that extra time to sketch out the small town Tommy has recently moved to, though, and once the foundation is laid the rest of the plot unfolds rapidly. Ultimately the conclusion was well worth my initial confusion, but I would have liked to see a few more clues revealed a little earlier on to keep my interest in it as high as possible.

“Last One Leaves the Light Out” asks more questions than it answers. The premise is quite intriguing, and the haunting descriptions of an abandoned world will remain lodged in my memory for a long time. While this isn’t the type of short story that is necessarily meant to answer every question the reader has about what really happened, I would have like to see the characters uncover a few more clues. The final scene ends abruptly due to the nature of the information the protagonists are able to figure out.

Don’t skip the forewords that appear before each story. Mr. Felkel discusses how he came up with the idea for each one, and some of his sources of inspiration are quite unusual. While reading them isn’t strictly necessary in order to understand what’s happening, they do add depth the narrative and I found all of them to be well worth my time.

Encounters is a solid collection of stories that complement one another well. I highly recommend it to anyone who hasn’t read Mr. Felkel’s work yet. This is a very good introduction to an author I’m really looking forward to reading more from in the future.

Justin is shocked to find Katherine in Silver Springs Nevada and with a child that is very obviously his, but Katherine thought Justin was someone else so they have to pretend that her son isn’t Justin’s for awhile in order to spare Justin’s friend’s family.

It was a nice twist on the secret baby story with Katherine honestly thinking Justin was a poor hog farmer who died overseas, so the shock of finding out that Justin is both alive and not the person she thought he was added a nice element of drama. Justin quickly falls in love with his son and realizes that he never fell out of love with Katherine even if he’s angry about some of the things in Katherine’s past.

Overall, it’s a sweet romance and very much a representative of the type of category romance that one expects when picking up a Harlequin Desire story. It had a decent plot, fun characters, and well described scenery, especially since I’ve been to Silver Springs Nevada a few times. The author has done her research and does a good job of writing a cowboy story with soldier elements and I enjoyed reading it.

It’ll take everything Mike has in him to keep the Pack Daughter safe and give him time to place his claim. That is if Becca doesn’t have to rescue him first…

I have come the appreciate author Crissy Smith’s ability to create explosive relationship, and strong female roles within her stories and this one certainly has both.

Becca is the daughter of the Alpha so of course she has learned to stand on her own two feet. I expected her to care for her pack deeply, but the extent of her emotional connection went even further. The author is so great at making me feel connected with the characters that I could almost feel the physical and emotional pain Becca experienced throughout this story while her pack is being attacked. I could also rejoice with her when she gets to have Mike in her arms, which at times is no small feat. This is something I can appreciate and makes me feel like I’m a kindred spirit to the characters because the author reaches me on a personal level.

Mike is a character I was familiar with and anticipating reading about from previous Were Chronicle stories. There is something about the calm yet authoritative way he carries himself that calls to me. It is amazing that this wolf who may not be the alpha in a pack, but certainly has an alpha personality, can concede when needed, and I appreciate that. Plus his military background adds a nice sex appeal to his character. A man in uniform protecting his people, yum!

The dynamic plotline, while keeping the romantic development at the forefront, was spectacular. It was truly a thing of magic and talent to see how you get a antagonistic plot, as well as other character connections, all while staying focused on the main couple finding their mate and love. As a reader it is something I’ve come to anticipate and enjoy from this author.

On the eve of her only daughter, Princess Raven’s wedding, an aging Snow White finds it impossible to share in the joyous spirit of the occasion. The ceremony itself promises to be the most glamorous social event of the decade. Snow White’s castle has been meticulously scrubbed, polished and opulently decorated for the celebration. It is already nearly bursting with jubilant guests and merry well-wishers. Prince Edel, Raven’s fiancé, is a fine man from a neighboring kingdom and Snow White’s own domain is prosperous and at peace. Things could not be better, in fact, except for one thing:

It promises her respite in its shimmering depths, but can Snow White trust a device that was so precious to a woman who sought to cause her such irreparable harm? And finally, can she release her soul-crushing grief and suffocating loneliness to once again discover what “happily ever after” really means?

Only time will tell as she wrestles with her past and is forced to confront The Reflections of Queen Snow White.

Snow White’s grief has extinguished all of the joy she used to find in life. Will she be able to find her way back to her old self before it’s too late?

The beautiful prose in this book fits the tone of the original story perfectly. What I love the most about fairy tales is their ability to evoke a sense of awe in the reader, and I was mesmerized by countless scenes in this tale. Life isn’t always easy or happy, but seeing Snow White struggle to overcome even the toughest odds infuses her adventures with a genuine sense of optimism.

I had a hard time understanding what Snow White saw in Prince Charming. Their relationship accelerates so quickly that I wondered how they were able to make the decision to get married when they knew almost nothing about one another. While Snow White is a well-rounded character, I didn’t get to know Prince Charming as well as I would have preferred. What I did learn about his personality was not necessarily always flattering, and it made me even more curious to know why Snow White chose him as her lifelong partner.

What I liked most about this story was its exploration of grief. Snow White has experienced a lot of pain in her life, and her reactions to those events are extremely realistic. Even though the plot is about a very specific kind of grief the coping mechanisms it discusses are universal. Due to these themes and how sensitively they are addressed I would especially recommend this book to anyone who has recently suffered any kind of loss.

I read The Reflections of Queen Snow White in one sitting because I couldn’t wait to find out what happens next. This is a great choice for anyone who loved the original story and has ever wondered what happened to Snow White and Prince Charming after they got married.
