Thrown out on the street by his homophobic stepfather, Dylan struggles to get his life together. Years of being used and abused have left him tough and determined to make it on his own. When he sees a dog getting beaten, his protective instincts drive him to rescue her. But as the attackers turn on Dylan, out of the shadows comes a hero. One with mysterious eyes and a shy sensuality Dylan can’t resist.

Cam Coburn can’t reveal his true identity to the man he rescues. Nor can he reveal that he’s a freak among freaks, a cockatrice shifter with an unwanted gift for seeking out conflict rather than treasure. Newly independent from his mentor, Cam sees in Dylan his first chance to test the limits of his human guise. Defying every rule, Cam succumbs to Dylan’s seduction for just one night. But Cam finds he can’t let his lover go, and Dylan breaks down every barrier. For he is the one human who can gaze in a cockatrice’s eyes without fear.

Yet even as their bond deepens, danger closes in on them from all sides, and Cam’s dark secrets may save them—or lead to their destruction.

I had to look up what a cockatrice was and I’m really glad I gave this book a try.

Ms. Gayle writes a new paranormal world for me, that I loved. Both of the main characters are highly flawed, yet so likeable. Dylan used to be a drug addict and a rent boy who was thrown out of his house for being gay. Cam has been raised to hate humans and to stick to his own kind. Cam rescues Dylan from some gangbangers when Dylan saves a pit bull from a beating and instead gets caught in their crosshairs. It’s a plot I’ve read in a lot of other romance novels, but this one felt different. Cam had this awkward quality about him and Dylan has this self-sufficient worldly attitude.

This world is beautifully built. It has a secret order of priests who oversee the cockatrice shifters, and some interesting bad guys that are weasels. Weasels as bad guys, I definitely saw that. Throw in a twist that surprised even me and explains the history so much. The writing style was fresh, original and very sensual.

The world building was a great backdrop for the characters. This is very much a character driven story that I loved. The relationship between Cam and Dylan was my favorite part. The way that Dylan doesn’t need Cam to save him, and the way he reacts to finding out about Cam’s other form helped this plot move along.

I will definitely read Ms. Gayle’s future works. I enjoyed her writing style and I would love to visit this world again. I recommend this for fans of paranormal m/m stories who are looking for a fresh new story that they can really sink their teeth in.

One-Night with a Corretti… Angelo Corretti has one mistress – revenge. Heartless and darkly sexy he has one objective…destroy the Corretti dynasty: the family who cruelly rejected him for his illegitimacy. But once, long ago, there was a wide-eyed innocent girl. For one night she gave him everything when he needed it most, and then he walked away at dawn. Now, on the cusp of absolute power, Angelo looks into those eyes again and learns of the consequences he left behind…

To Lucia Anturri, trusting someone is a choice, but loving someone is not. She wishes she didn’t love Angelo Corretti, the bastard son of Carlo Corretti; but she has for as long as she can remember.

As children, she was always there to tend his wounds, console, and try to make him laugh–when he would allow it. He called her “my puppy”. Figuratively, sometimes he patted her on the head, at other times he kicked her away. But she always returned. One night he came to her in his greatest pain and need. She pulled him into her home, comforted him, and gave him all the love she could. This time when he ‘kicked her aside’; he inflicted emotional wounds that never healed. They scabbed over but still hurt and bled easily.

That was seven years ago. He has returned to Sicily a billionaire and owner of the flagship hotel of the powerful, scandalous Corretti family—the family that refused to acknowledge him. His mission of revenge is bearing fruit. Lucia is a maid in the hotel. He is angry at her for breaking a promise she made long ago.

Lucia is a strong, determined woman who has endured trials and tribulations. She intends to stand firm against his advances. There is just one flaw in her plan. She still loves Angelo Corretti even though she doesn’t want to love him. He has caused her enough grief to last a life time.

Angelo had never known love and did not know how to love. He was raised by grandparents that said he should never have been born; been abandoned by his mother who said she was sorry she gave birth to him; and been rejected by a father that refused to acknowledge him and said he’d never intended for Angelo to be more than a stain on a sheet.  Angelo fought for acceptance but it never came; so revenge and angry motivated his every action.

Lucia who loves so much it hurts and Angelo who doesn’t know what love is suffer emotional growing pains that rock both their worlds.

Kate Hewitt entices the reader into Lucia and Angelo’s world to vicariously experience the hurt, the hate, the need, battered self-esteem, and feelings of abandonment, while giving peeks at a love so strong it will not be denied—just waits and works its magic that satisfies the heart.

An Inheritance of Shame is a story of redemption and an encompassing love. The story glides along on the smooth writing style of Kate Hewitt. Good entertainment.

Magic born of the elements, demons, mages, battles, fairy creatures, a reluctant hero(ine), a plot to kill a king, a quest and a world in trouble.

Living on the peaceful island Iram, Zo knows little of the troubles brewing on the mainland. But when her brother Seve is poisoned, and her twin sister Alicia halts his slow but fateful progress towards death with an ancient binding spell, thereby subjecting herself to the same horrific death, Zo has no choice but to travel to the mainland to procure the flower of rosem, a crucial ingredient in the antidote for the poison.

What she doesn’t know is that king Vindha on the mainland has threatened the fabric of earth’s magic by offering the bodies of dead mages to the demons, thus creating fearsome demon mages. These demon mages have the ability to withstand any magical attack. As she struggles to journey through the treacherous mainland, and return home in time to save her siblings, Zo is unaware that Vindha has sent a demon mage to kill her – and thereby condemn her siblings to an inevitable death.

Sabine Reed has written a very exciting fantasy novel which contains a noble quest, an evil power-hungry king, powerful tribal peoples, a boy prophet named Leo, and myriad adventures.

Mage Zo, her brother, King Seve, and her twin sister, Alicia, rule over the island of Iram. Their paternal grandfather left the mainland forty years ago to avoid his brother’s tyranny. The island has become a sanctuary, a home to them all, but now that is being threatened. King Seve has been poisoned and Alicia has cast an ancient binding spell to slow the action of the poison. Zo must return to the mainland to find a rare flower which is the antidote’s main ingredient. Without the antidote, both Seve and Alicia will die.

I really like Zo. She is a very strong woman with a deep love for her brother and sister. She is a strong mage with many powers, and at the start of the novel, she doesn’t think she needs any help to fulfill the quest for the Flower of Rosem. Fortunately, Alicia feels differently and insists that Zo have a few companions to help her. Zo has lived an isolated life on Iram and she has no desire to get involved with the war King Vindha is waging in his drive to conquer all the nations in this world. She just wants to get to the flower and bring it home, and she has to do that in less than three weeks.

The task becomes nearly insurmountable almost from the beginning and Zo needs all the help she can find. I like the way Zo learns quickly about the new world she has to traverse, and I appreciate the fact that she is a real three-dimensional character who matures as the quest continues. At first she thinks bringing a bodyguard along is totally unnecessary, and she doesn’t want Arkon to slow her down. Arkon is a remarkable man in his own right, able to help without offending, and as the adventures continue it becomes clear to them both that magic alone won’t solve their problems. Arkon’s swordsmanship along with his loyalty and ingenuity are needed a number of times. Zo, Arkon, and Leo only survive because they learn to work together.

This book captured me in the first paragraph, and I couldn’t put it down. It is a great story with engaging characters. The suspense holds right through to the end. This is the first novel in a trilogy, but it does come to a satisfactory stopping point. That being said, I sincerely hope that Reed is writing furiously on the next two volumes as I for one don’t want to have to wait too long to find out what happens to Zo and the others living on Iram. This is a first rate fantasy novel which I am certain all lovers of fantasy will find captivating and riveting.

Falling for her protector

For single mother Abby Bauman, a failed marriage and a troublesome ex are proof of love gone wrong. But once she’s caught up in danger and saved—twice—by take-charge detective Ethan James, she considers whether falling for a true-blue hero is worth the risk. Even now, after the rescue, he seems bent on continuing to protect her and her daughter. Why?

There’s more to Ethan’s determination to stay close than he’s telling her. But when she confronts him, he proves she’s more than a means to solve a case. That tempts Abby to take a second chance on trust—and love. Which might be the best choice she’s ever made.

There’s nothing better than a little adventure, suspense and romance all rolled into one story, and that’s what A Texas Hero has to offer.

I immediately liked Abby, and when she meets Ethan and he becomes her knight in shining armor, you can’t help but read on wondering how they’re going to get out of a very dangerous situation.

Ms. Warren did a wonderful job upping the suspense and danger at each step of the story and it had me reading faster to see how they’d handle the current predicament.

The secondary characters are wonderful too and very well-drawn. I especially enjoyed the scenes with Ethan’s father and daughter. Some of their lines were humorous, especially the words his father used for swearing so his granddaughter didn’t hear his bad language.

These were all people you cheered for and as this story is part of the Willow Creek, Texas series, I’ll certainly be looking for more books by Ms. Warren.

If you’re looking for a fun, suspenseful summer time read, this could be one for you.

Memphis, Tennessee. The Russian mob’s declared war on the MPD, leaving a team of dead cops in their wake. Lt. Jamie Callahan’s convinced there’s a mole in their pack, and he and his new partner must figure out who set them up — and who’s responsible for the deaths of their former lieutenants.

Officer Amanda Black has her sights set on the hottest hottie in the MPD calendar, Mr. July, Lt. Jamie Callahan, but every time she gets close, he backs off. Is he avoiding her because she’s black? Or because he’s got some last century sense of nobility when it comes to officers under his command? Either way, Amanda intends to change Callahan’s mind. No one stands up to an Alpha She-Wolf in heat. She’s about to mark her territory, and any woman who gets in her way’s going to feel her claws.

The Russian Mob has declared war on Memphis police department. Several cops didn’t make it and now they must figure out who set them up. All the while, Officer Amanda Black has had the hots for Lieutenant Jamie Callahan since the police academy, she has intentions on making it known she is interested.

I thought this would be an interesting read of police investigation with a paranormal twist. I have to say I was somewhat intrigued to see Memphis, Tennessee, a city I’ve visited several times in a book so I was excited and ready for the action. I found myself pausing when I saw that the Memphis police are at war with the Russian Mob. I didn’t let that odd mix stop me. I proceeded to read and have to say that the opening chapter had my interest. Lieutenant Snorrasan was implementing a new chain of command with fellow officers Jamie Callahan and Amanda Black. Recently the force lost Officer’s Smith and Reginald, and nearly lost Officer Black. They have reason to believe that there is a mole in the department and officer’s were lost because of an ambush. Officer Callahan is promoted to lead the investigation being warned to not trust anyone.

I really think the story line has much potential. I was hoping for more action but it seemed the focus was more on the pack law and claiming Amanda a mate. There’s this elite team of werewolf cops out in the line of duty on the case of illegal sales of unregistered weapons and the main characters are more focused on mating and making it known to other pack members that they belong to each other. Amanda, the heroine of the story was made to be a Billy bad A—but it seems as the story develops she’s not so hard and bad. She’s questioning Callahan’s love and also worried about the claiming process.

This one really didn’t give me what I thought such a strong title and such an interesting blurb offered. However, the idea is a good one, and the author’s ability strong enough that I would read more of the series to see if the next installment picks up on the action and if the story line develops more.

Some zombies are raised. Others must be put down. Just ask Anita Blake.

Before now, she would have considered them merely off-putting, never dangerous. Before now, she had never heard of any of them causing human beings to perish in agony. But that’s all changed.

Micah’s estranged father lies dying, rotting away inside from some strange ailment that has his doctors whispering about “zombie disease.”

Anita makes her living off of zombies—but these aren’t the kind she knows so well. These creatures hunt in daylight, and are as fast and strong as vampires. If they bite you, you become just like them. And round and round it goes…

Where will it stop?

Affliction left me breathless and feeling like I’d read the adventure of a lifetime. This book had it all. If I was an adrenaline junky, this book had enough tense moments with volumes of flat out action that kept me on the edge of my seat that I felt I had received a serious fix. If I was a die-hard romantic, then this book made me feel like I’d found and lost amazing treasures – I was shocked, I was saddened and I was feeling the warm and fuzzies from some parts that were sappy and full of romance. If I was into some kinky sex, I would have found some serious satisfaction in the story too. This novel put them all together making it simply incredible and the absolute best writing that Laurell K. Hamilton has done in a long while. I’m simply blown away by the powerhouse that is Affliction.

Longtime fans of the Anita Blake series should be pleased with this book. It really does tap into the original grittiness and realism that originally captured my attention with the first Anita Blake novel I’d read years ago. Yes, there are some erotic moments in this story, even a new twist with Nicky that I’d never seen or heard of before, but it has a purpose here. It serves to explore and validate the strength of the declaration she makes in the book. It’s a bit extreme but seeing what kind of wereanimal Nicky was, it made perfect sense. It works. And it leaves no doubt as to the truth. I admit that it might squick some people out but I took it in the manner and context it was written in. These people aren’t human, and our rules and social mores don’t have weight. It makes that ‘otherness’ more real.

The villain was a huge surprise. He broke all the rules and threw Anita and the gang for a serious loop into the bizarre. The evil dude was bad to the bone and enjoyed every miserable moment he could inflict on everybody. I didn’t figure out that there was an actual agenda until the very end. Astounding! The conflict truly was like a roller coaster. There were sharp twists and turns, very low lows that made my stomach drop and highs that were a breath of fresh air, until the plot took that drastic plunge into more revelations, despair and sheer brutality that left me stunned. At one point, with one character, I had to walk away from the book. I was so upset. I felt nauseas because I was hyperventilating. I couldn’t believe what was happening and that Anita couldn’t save the day. I wanted her to save the day, needed her to, but the author knew what had to be done. The only reason I was affected so profoundly is a clear testament to Ms. Hamilton’s skill as a writer. In Affliction the writing is honed to such a sharp, thin edge; my feelings were cut and sliced, leaving my emotions flayed and frayed. It was master craftsmanship.

I was thrilled with seeing Jean-Claude away from home. I was sad for Micah because he was home. I got to see another side to Nathaniel I never suspected he had. I got to see how the Harlequin were integrating…or not. I learned something worrisome yet, when I thought about it, logical. When Anita found out she wasn’t too happy but then again, neither was I. Probably for the same reason. Men always think we need protecting and for most civilians, we do. But the heroine isn’t like me or other women I know – the guys forget that sometimes. Makes for interesting dialogue exchanges.

That’s another strong aspect – dialogue. Awesome to see Ed/Ted verbally sparring with Anita and showcasing just how unique their relationship is, and I enjoyed how the heroine deals with bigots and morons – especially when she plays them. One in particular deserved it. Name calling and verbal barbs are some of the things that made this tale seem real because it touched on how some guys, even professional and well trained, break down under stress. Believe me, there is a ton of stress for the police and SWAT in this story. I liked how the author showed the evolving of the working relationship between all the people who will eventually make a difference in the outcome.

This novel is filled to the brim with juicy information that I cannot mention. Of course that annoys me. This is the kind of book that I want to share, to discuss and ask if certain parts meant as much to someone else as it did to me. I want to share what I thought was funny, and there were moments that made me smile. A few had me laughing out loud, like the John Wayne references. It was so … personable and again, reinforced the feeling that these people could be real, somewhere. I just don’t want the zombies to be real. No. I hate zombies. Even though I don’t read books about zombies, the very unique and fascinating twist that Ms. Hamilton spins throughout Affliction made it utterly mesmerizing. The best zombie is a dead, dead zombie.

I rated this tale as a best book simply because it’s that awe-inspiring. A book has to take me to another place so completely, I lose track of time and myself. It has to make me want to shout at it -in a good way, because I can’t keep my emotions quietly inside; they have to burst forth, I have to share it with someone, anyone. It has to haunt me, making me sad that I’ve reached the end even though it was an emotionally exhausting journey to reach that final page. It’s the kind of book that made me stare at it and think, “This can’t be the end, there has to be more because so much has taken place and I can sense the ripple effects it’s left in my imagination”. One thing I can guarantee. This novel is going to hold a proud place on my keeper shelf. I’ve fallen in love with the series all over again. There’s no better kudos than that.

In Chase Tinker’s world, magic, lies and secrets can be a lethal combination…

After spending the summer at his grandfather’s gigantic, incredibly magical house, thirteen-year-old Chase Tinker thought things couldn’t get any more bizarre, or that the secrets and lies couldn’t get any worse, but he was wrong.

Magical powers are wonderful, or so Chase and his younger brother Andy now believe after spending a summer at their grandfather’s wonderful magical house. But Chase soon learns that secrets come with those powers, and some of those secrets are dark indeed. Add to that the fact that Chase has developed new powers which explode each time he sneezes and the magical mayhem is off and running. He can’t control these extra powers and sometimes they have unexpected outcomes, such as when he accidentally turns his teacher into a puddle of slimy goo.

Malia Ann Haberman has written another absolutely captivating story about the magical Tinker family. This is the second novel in the series, but it stands alone just fine. There is an abundance of magical craziness, and the story is full of adventure. The evil Marlowe family returns. There is a kidnapping to be followed by a rescue mission. A mysterious magical girl shows up. But beyond all these adventures there lies a dark secret which will change them all.

Chase is a very believable and likeable character. He is a typical thirteen-year-old who is sure that he knows what is best for everyone. He is kind and loyal, stubborn and pig-headed, great at magic and horrible at math, and he has a deep and abiding love for his family. The other characters are also well-developed, even the ferret, Maxwell, who ends up saving his friends.

The plot is action-packed with many twists and turns. Some of the secrets which are revealed came as a total surprise to me and yet, once revealed, they certainly fit the story. Chase, who has some major issues with his father, discovers some truths which help him to grow and mature. The story ends for the moment, and the ending is a satisfactory stopping point. However, this is obviously not the last book in the series.

If you are looking for a humorous, action-filled, suspenseful story with lots of ins and outs, then this could be just the book for you. I would encourage readers who want to get the most pleasure out of the series to start with Chase Tinker and the House of Magic. And my fervent hope is that the author is hard at work at publishing the next book in the series, because I for one am ready for more magical adventures with Chase and his family.

This collection made me wish I was an explorer even though I’ve never understood the appeal of that profession before. While exploring other worlds and times can be quite dangerous, there is something mesmerizing about being the first person to try a new technological breakthrough or visit an unknown place.

In “The Calling Stars” Douglas and Rebecca have an unusual backup plan to protect them from their dangerous occupation. They are introduced to the reader as a blissfully happy engaged couple, but Douglas talks down to Rebecca and refuses to listen to what she had to say. On the rare occasion that he does listen to her their conversations feel stilted. While the main plot points were put to rest in the final scene they would have made more of an impact on me if I had been given a little more insight into Drooper’s personality beforehand.

The best story here by far is “Die Hard.” I could imagine precisely how frustrated Emil Ludlow feels when his monthly shipment of science fiction novels is held back due to a ridiculous bureaucratic error, and the series of letters he sends to the Science Fantasy Home Book Club in an attempt to fix it are hilarious. I never wanted Emil’s misadventures to end, and I hope to hear from him again soon in the sequel that could easily come out of what happens in the last letter from his book club.

I had such high hopes for “Messiah.” When Dr. MacDonald and Dr. Harcourt first land on the alien planet I could never have imagined what their samples of plants, soil, rocks, and water will tell them about this virgin world. The answers to the mystery the uncover felt tacked on, though, and based on what I learned about their personalities and ethical codes I had a difficult time understanding a decision one of the characters makes at the end.

At first I was a little confused by the inclusion of “The Wraith.” The science fiction elements in it were not immediately apparent, and as much as I liked hearing Tank Richards impression of the new gin join he’s visiting and the stranger he meets there I wondered how “The Wraith” would fit in with the rest of the stories in this collection. Figuring out this mystery was such a rewarding experience that as soon as I finished reading I immediately started over again with the first paragraph.

The first time I read “Space Pilot” I thought I misunderstood what Charley the space pilot was doing on his test run. Certain aspects of the plot were so sparse that I needed to read it again before I realized that my first interpretation was correct. It has a fantastic premise, but “Space Pilot” would have had more of an impact on me had more time been taken to develop Charley’s personality and include subtle clues about what was actually happening to him.

Science Fiction From Out There kept me on my toes from beginning to end. This is a great choice for readers who prefers science fiction that is more interested in society’s response to unbelievable technological breakthroughs than with how those discoveries were made.

Davy Larson is a devastated man. He finds his father murdered and his father’s land in the hands of a man who happens to be the father of Abigail O’Sullivan. Davy wants answers, so to get them he decides to make a trade; he’ll return Mr. O’Sullivan’s daughter, Abigail, if he gets the answers that he seeks. But as with all good stories, the plot thickens when the kidnapper and kidnap-ee discover they still have feelings for one another.

Captive Bride is a engaging little novella. Ms. Hampton did a beautiful describing the time period and drawing this reader into the setting. While I would have liked to have had a chance to actually see the budding romance there was enough detail sprinkled in to let me know imagine how it might have happened. I also felt that the story was a bit predictable as there were no surprises but I did enjoy the fact that the romance was detailed. It felt like a western as the tension between the “pioneer settlers” and “Native Americans” was present. There’s also a bit of mystery to be solved. Davy has a vested interest in finding out who killed his father and why. Besides the romance, I was interested to see Ms. Hampton would work out the questions Davy had and how he and Abigail would find their HEA.

This is the first story that I have read of Sandi Hampton’s and I can see that she has an abundance of promise in her future if she continues her romance writing! I am looking forward to reading another story from this writer soon.

This was a pleasant read and I’d recommend to anyone who enjoys a sweet romance with just enough heat to make it a little spicy. Readers who enjoy the idea of being stolen away should check this out. I was held captive by this tale of lovers reunited.
