To save the woman he loves, he must push his gifts to the brink.

Halle Shifters, Book 2

Julian DuCharme, a rare Spirit Bear with legendary healing powers, is finally free from the threat of death, finally free to claim his mate—but she’s not having it. While his Bear screams it’s time to mate, the love of his life wants to date.

Holding his Bear in check while convincing her he’s not out to control her won’t be easy. She’s stubborn and a closeted geek—in other words, perfect for him.

Cynthia “Cyn” Reyes, owner of Living Art Tattoos, thinks Julian is the hottest thing on two legs. That doesn’t mean she’s going to roll over for his masculine charm. She watched her mother flounder when her father passed away, and she’s determined to never lose herself to someone else. Not even a man who would jump the moon for her, if she asked that of him.

When the women of Living Art are targeted by a killer, Julian doesn’t think twice about pouring out his last drop of power to keep Cyn safe. But it’s Cyn who’ll give up everything—her independence, even her humanity—to keep a terrifying vision from coming true.

Cynthia ‘Cyn’ Reyes hopes life settles down now that her friend has finally mated. And she knows that Julian DuCharme is more than likely just what he says, her mate and a rare Spirit Bear shifter. But sometimes, a girl just wants to be courted and wooed, not taken for granted. When folks just keep trying to kill her and destroy her Tattoo shop, she will do whatever it takes to protect those she cares for. Julian DuCharme, for all his strength and powers, is determined to give Cyn what she wants: a proper courtship with all the trimmings. At least that’s the plan, until Cyn and the others become targets. Then Julian is determined to claim his mate so she will be stronger and more able to survive if things get worse. The one question is, when Julian does finally turn Cyn, what will she be? Can Julian court Cyn to her satisfaction? Together, can they catch the ones targeting them?

Cynful is Dana Marie Bell’s second Halle Shifter book, and a fantastic follow up to Bear Necessities. I like that she’s kept everyone from the first book together, and expands this world a bit more. She has also brought in some old friends, from the Halle Puma series, and I loved seeing them again as well. All of Ms. Bell’s characters are well defined, strong and charismatic. This world is one I love, and hope to visit often, filled with so many intriguing folks.

Cynthia ‘Cyn’ Reyes is a strong and independent woman. She’s attracted to Julian, but hates the idea that her life depends on some fated mate. She wants to date and be courted, and I loved some of the things she put Julian through on their dates. She knows at some point he’ll need to claim her and mate her, but she’s determined to have it be on her terms, not Fate’s. She’s smart enough to realize, when the attacks escalate, she needs the strength being Julian’s mate will provide. She’ll be turned, but on her terms, when she’s good and ready.

Julian DuCharme is hot, sexy and one of the rarest of shifters, a Spirit Bear. He has the power to heal, and he uses it in his role as a nurse at the local clinic. He knew Cyn was his mate the first time he saw her, and his frustration at the wait is driving him crazy. But he’s willing to do things Cyn’s way, at least until the danger comes their way again. I love Julian’s determination, and his willingness to follow Cyn’s lead in this courtship. He won me over with his gentle nature when he works with the patients, and his fierce loyalty to friends and loved ones.

This is a fast paced and action packed story, with romance, danger and mystery around every corner. The secondary characters here are as strong as Julian and Cyn, and the addition of some of the Halle Pumas adds to the familiarity and fun. Of course, this has lots of Dana Marie Bell’s scorching hot sex, and the big surprise of what Cyn becomes is fantastic (and I’m not giving spoilers here on that). There’s a happy ever after here, but it’s hard won, and not without peril. This is for those who like humor with their romance, and a side of danger to spice it up.

Jillian Trent falls for a cowboy–but not just a cowboy. He’s a champion of reining…from Texas, from money, and realistically, far out of reach.

Or is he? The moment he asks her out, Jill starts to puzzle over his ‘real’ motivation.

After all, a trail ride through the Catskills, overshadowed by the legends of ‘the Headless Horseman’ might seem romantic to some…or it might highlight some of the dangers inherent to riding–and love. And she knows there is a danger.

Nothing is what Jill expected, though. She’s fallen for a man and at the same time, become enchanted with a golden Haflinger. All her ambitions, for love and for her riding career, are at her fingertips. Yet, both are threatened.

Unfortunately, no one else shares Jill’s perception. Perhaps, Jill’s involvement in mystery writing makes her susceptible to seeing clues where there are none.

Will she put aside her self-doubt and trust? Or will that leave all of them in deadly danger.

She’s all dressed up and looking forward to dinner and a first date with Frank, a very good looking champion horse rider. Suddenly something spurts out of the woods onto the road and she almost hits it before she can get stopped. When she goes to check on it, she finds a horse. But where is the rider?

This author loves horses, rides them, and it shows in her story telling. I learned about horse shows, horse personalities, and a bit about how to train them. Jillian rides in dressage competition and she finds that some of the training techniques mean the rider has to adopt them, not just the horse.

Jillian’s very attracted to Frank, but she’s not sure her affections are reciprocated. After all, she’s a mystery book reviewer that only shows a horse, not a rodeo girl. I would have liked to known a bit more about Jillian’s background. It wasn’t necessary, but it would have fleshed out the story a bit more.

This is like a cozy with horses. The story isn’t too deep, the characters are what keep you entertained, and when accidents start happening regularly at the show you begin realize they aren’t all “accidents”.

What grabs Jillian’s attention at the beginning was the fact that Frank almost died from a gas heater in his small unventilated trailer. When he says it’s not his heater, she begins to think these might be deliberate acts.

The author makes Jillian a young woman who is a bit insecure in her looks and with her horse. She also isn’t a very good investigator. She missed some clues Miss Marple (her mystery heroine) would have noticed. She didn’t give up, though. She kept searching for answers and it turned into a mystery bigger than I expected. The romance between Jillian and Frank is slow and sweet.

The best part of this book is the character development and the various types of people she has added to the story. Anytime you have a large gathering you get all types and she’s given you a run down on most of them in this story. It’s a pleasant read that left me with a smile at the end.

When Grace Daniels goes to the cemetery to visit the grave of her twin brother, she meets a soldier, there for the same reason, or at least that’s what she believes until he tells her about the blind date her brother arranged before he was killed in combat.

It’s the date of her dreams. Big band, brass and sass, Madame Eve from 1NightStand has set her up for an unforgettable night, a WWII swing dance party. Unfortunately, she’s having trouble letting go of her past and is afraid to take the chance given to her.

Sergeant Frank Winters is an Army trumpet player who travels with the Color Guard, a great dancer, and six feet four inches of eye candy that could make her an addict. He’s also a soldier and soldiers can get killed. Grace doesn’t have the heart to lose someone again, but Frank knows a good thing when he sees it, and he’s determined to show her in one night, she’s got more to lose if she walks away.

It may only be 36 pages long, but My Boogie Woogie Bugle Guy packs the wallop of a full-length novel…and then some!

Grace Daniels is still heavily grieving over the loss of her twin brother, George, on the one year anniversary of the Special Forces Soldier’s death. It’s clear she never expected to find love while at the cemetery!

Frank Winters is an old Army buddy of Grace’s brother, but he’s not your average hot-shot soldier. Frank’s in the Army Band. He’s at the cemetery not only to grieve for his fallen friend, but to try to find George’s unknown sister; a woman he’d been set up with before tragedy struck.

What a fantastic, short tale! The writing is phenomenal, the love scenes smoking hot, and the connection between the two characters was instant and natural. I loved the unique twist of making Frank a member of the military, but in a somewhat unexpected role. George has managed to fix up this wonderful couple from beyond the grave, and it was nothing but pure pleasure to read about their supposed one night stand that you knew had to become more!

I love the concept of the 1Night Stand series, and although I find myself wishing there was more, these stories provide quick, satisfying reads. In a few precious pages the characters are established, developed, and a relationship is born. If you have limited time and want something hot to read – this would be an awesome option!

Her ultimate sexual fantasy brought to life.

While Becca’s friends fantasize about multiple men and erotic situations, Becca longs for something more down to earth-a sizzling night with the male stripper she hired for her friend’s bachelorette party.

Despite her friends’ good-natured insistence that she go for it, Becca just doesn’t know how to tell this super sexy man she wants to jump his bones.

But when he shows up at her door later that night-and with a hunky friend in tow-she decides she just can’t let this opportunity slip away.

This quickie had me longing for a long-term relationship with these characters. Becca had no idea when planning her friend’s bachelorette party it would lead to the most intense and naughty sex of her life, but I’m glad it did.

Don and Cal have all of the features of male strippers: gorgeous bodies, stunning personalities, and a full package. I could not blame Becca for wanting to take complete advantage. I envied her for getting to experience something that many woman dream of. On top of offering up some great sex these men seem to have personalities that just shined through the pages. I found myself wanting to know more about them, which is a strong feat for such a short story.

This story is about pure unadulterated lust with a side of kink, and I enjoyed every second of it. So much so that I immediately wanted to re-read the story and purchase the following story titled The Stranger. I would most certainly recommend this story to anyone who is looking for a truly erotic story.

Jessica Grant knows vampires only too well. She runs the York Council tracker programme making sure that Otherworlders are all where they should be, keeps the filing in order and drinks far too much coffee.

To Jess, vampires are annoying and arrogant and far too sexy for their own good, particularly her ex-colleague Sil, who’s now in charge of Otherworld York. When a demon turns up and threatens not just Jess but the whole world order, she and Sil are forced to work together.

But then Jess turns out to be the key to saving the world, which puts a very different slant on their relationship.

The stakes are high. They are also very, very pointy and Jess isn’t afraid to use them – even on the vampire she’s rather afraid she’s falling in love with …

I’ve been reluctant to read stories featuring vampires because lately they’ve all sounded the same. However, I’m glad I took a risk because Vampire State of Mind offers a whole new take on this sub-genre.

It’s part mystery, part paranormal romance with a dash of Sci-Fi. I loved the world Ms. Lovering created for this book. There’s been a war, a treaty was signed and now it seems like it’s back to normal but as you read further into the story you begin to wonder if that’s possible. The author did a great job putting me on the edge of my seat, wondering what was happening and what would happen next to disrupt the once peaceful society.

I found myself thrown into a world that on the one hand was very familiar, but yet foreign and unnerving. The dialogue was great and the interaction between everyone, even though it was paranormal, sounded realistic. The story is told in the first person that I felt added to the immediacy of both character and place.

And the icing on the cake was the sexual tension between Jessie and Sil. If like me you’ve been hesitant to read vampire stories, I’d say give this one a try because I think you’ll enjoy it.

To find happiness, she must do something she swore she’d never do again.

Let a man control her.

After beating cancer, Vivian goes on a mission to cleanse her life. First on the list, kicking her cheating, controlling husband to the curb. Second, discovering the answer to a question that’s been haunting her. Is the love she harbors for Brock, her bad-boy brother-in-law, genuine or a chemotherapy-induced illusion?

Brock loves a woman he can’t have. His brother’s wife. To claim her would be a betrayal. He knows loving her is wrong but he can’t help it. So when circumstances bring them back together, he can no longer deny his forbidden attraction, and they unite in a fury of passion, lust—and bondage.

But Vivian isn’t prepared for Brock’s BDSM lifestyle, no matter how sexy he looks with his tats and leathers. After ten years with a controlling husband, submission is terrifying—but so is never being with Brock again. Submission or freedom? No matter which she chooses, her life will change forever.

What would you do if you had a second chance at life? That’s what Vivian got the moment she beat cancer. A second chance to live again and she is going to do anything and everything to live it to the fullest.

Vivian has known for years that her husband was a cheating controlling jerk, but when he couldn’t be bothered to support her during her fight for life, it was the last straw. It also didn’t help that his brother Brock was there for her every step of the way. She has always had a special place in her heart for him, but can her attraction actually be more? One cancer victory, a steamy kiss and a divorce later and now Vivian is going to find out.

Brock must move on. He needs to stop pining over his older brother’s wife. His love life is suffering and so is his job. He isn’t even enjoying one of his favorite past times, being a Dom. This big strong tattooed man is going to go out on his Harley and change things up – until he opens his garage door and there stands Vivian looking better than ever.

Now they both have a chance to find love. But they are each bringing into the relationship painful pasts and secrets. They must be strong enough to work past the pain and trust each other to make it work. The question is…are they?

His Forbidden Submissive was a good story. I enjoyed seeing Vivian take charge of her life, but her knee jerk reactions were often and cumbersome. Brock also was an enigma. When you look at the cover you see this sexy gorgeous male back. The cover depicts Ms. Evans’ description of Brock very well. I also imagine him being an amazing Dom with a strength that is solid and undeterred. That was not the case. He comes across as too insecure and unsure, but his tenderness to Vivian was still sweet. Another mixed bag for me is the ex-husband. He’s like the third corner of this love triangle, but I feel he was not utilized to his fullest. He was this big dark cloud hanging over them, but all he did was sprinkle on them. But in the same breath, I’m glad he did take a back seat. It showed how unimportant he was to their future.

This novel had more heart and emotions than it did BDSM. My problem is that after reading the blurb, I went into the book expecting more grrrr and less awww. If I mentally take out the strong undercurrent of BDSM in my mind, the story improves for me. Ms. Evans had a tough job in my opinion. How do you write a Dom that has an emotional connection with a woman that’s forbidden? In that regards, she does a very nice job. Brock is more than likely representing a “real life” Dom and not the countless alphas that are in the literary world. I personally think Brock is written more realistically with emotions and insecurities. Well done Ms. Evans.

His Forbidden Submissive is a pleasant read that has elements of BDSM. Brock and Vivian are a relatively intense couple who have a bumpy ride to happiness. Their insecurities are real and so are most of their reactions to them. This is a satisfying story, but the plot is missing a teeny tiny something to push it over the top for me. I would recommend this book to someone that is looking for a book about second chances and the emotions of doing what’s right for your heart. Expect elements of BDSM, but nothing hard-core.

His Forbidden Submissive is about the happy ending at the end of a long journey. I found myself cheering for this couple. I hope you will, too!

Everything Emma Thompson owns fits in a suitcase she moves from one roach infested motel to another. She and Jake, her five year old son who can see the future, are running from the men intent on taking him. Emma will do anything to protect him even when it means accepting the help of a stranger named Will. Jake insists she needs Will, but Emma’s never needed help before. And even though she’s learned to trust her son, it doesn’t mean she trusts Will.

Mercenary Will Davenport lives in the moment. Hauling Emma to South Dakota should have been an easy job, but his employer neglected to tell him about Emma’s freaky son and the gunmen hot on her trail. Instinct tells him this job is trouble, but nothing can prepare him for Jake’s proclamation that Will is The Chosen One, who must protect Emma from the men hunting her power. A power she doesn’t know she has.

Will protects Emma and Jake on a cross-country chase from the men pursuing them, while struggling with memories from his past, his apprehension of Jake, and his growing attraction to Emma. Will’s overwhelming urge to protect Emma surprises him, especially since it has nothing to do with his paycheck and possibly everything to do with the tattoo Jake branded on his arm. Rich and powerful men are desperate to capture Emma, and Will must discover why before it’s too late.

Are you an adrenaline junkie?  Then you need to read this book! It hits the floor running, and never really stops.  I wasn’t sure what to expect when I got this book for review. The author calls it urban fantasy, but it really isn’t (I looked up the definition of UF … yeah, I’m a geek).  It’s really a paranormal action/thriller that I couldn’t stand to put down.

Emma has had a rough few years, hiding out from the bad men who seem to want her son.  Thankfully, Jake has an early warning system, but it’s starting to get a bit defective: where he was able to sense them with plenty of time to spare, now it’s declining … a few hours… even a few minutes.

We see them for the first time packing to run.  And they’re too late — the bad guys are already there. They meet Will, who’s not what he seems, and he helps them get away. Sort of.

Emma is a great mom who will do anything, sacrifice anything (and really, she has) for her son, Jake, who’s special.  He can sense things and see the future. Emma doesn’t know why the men are after them, but it doesn’t matter. She has a gun and knows how to use it. She’s taken defensive driving lessons. She’s as prepared as she can be for confrontation.

Will is, at heart, a good man.  That shows from the start, no matter what he thinks he is.  And Jake trusts him, so Emma allows him along, reluctantly.

This is a book where few things are as they seem, where no place is safe and there’s nowhere to run.  The author doesn’t give you more than a few paragraphs to catch your breath in between the craziness of the pursuit, and she’s brutally honest about the way her characters feel.  I liked her writing style and her voice. The characters were all well drawn, completely three dimensional and believable.  The editing was wonderful and I never got tossed from the story for a glich or typo.  Sometimes, I worry when a book is self-published, but that’s not the case here at all.

Five year-old Jake is old beyond his years, but I didn’t have a problem with him not acting his age.  I was a bit taken aback when he ordered his mom around, but that was the parent in me rebelling more than it being unbelievable.

Will needs to sort himself out, and seems to do so on their insanely dangerous trip across the midwest.  The reason for things is slowly revealed, a prophecy is shared, the playing field is set.  A word of warning:  this book’s ending is really more of a beginning.  While it does close the door on this particular plotline (running from the bad guys), it begins the more serious story of prophecy fulfillment.

The first thing I did upon finishing this book was go out and buy the next two in the series.  I’m hooked.  Bet you will be, too.

Why You Shouldn’t Beat Up Your Critiquer

Will that next agent or editor buy your manuscript?

Will they even read it?

Well, probably not.

The fact is, they’ll usually reject your work after glancing at the first page. While some may hint at problems they see there, most will return your work with a well-worded form rejection letter. They don’t critique your work because of time constraints, but they also know that, in general, you’ll not like or believe what they have to say.

It’s an open secret in the writing industry. Most unpublished writers will never be published, because of their first paragraphs. Many send problem-riddled manuscripts to editor after editor, believing they are perfect. In the mean time they blithely build the same flaws into their next manuscript, not knowing they’re making those mistakes. Unless someone tells them what the problems are, their manuscripts will be rejected the rest of their lives. Telling them, of course, is what professional editors do.

Note, however, that while you may not recognize problems in your manuscript, someone does! Those editors! They quickly spot them in a manuscript’s first chapter—often on the first page—and reject the submission without further reading. They know the rest of the manuscript contains the same mistakes, just as we know an iceberg’s submerged part is made up of more of the same ice seen on top. But they simply don’t have the time or inclination to teach authors their writing skills, and certainly don’t want to get into conversations where they must defend their findings. So they send out “sorry, it’s not for us” letters and move on to the next manuscript in their bulging slush piles.

One reason editors won’t offer advice is, unfortunately, that many writers refuse to believe them when they do. It’s a problem I constantly run into as a professional fiction editor and online writing instructor. As an example, in a recent class I explained what an “opening hook” was, and asked students to develop one and send me their first few paragraphs for review. Then I made a mistake that sent a flash fire through the classroom.

I thought I’d do those students a favor and edit those paragraphs, not just comment on their hooks. I put my editing into a document and, realizing we all can learn from each other’s mistakes, suggested that students look at all the entries, not just their own.

I got a seething response from one student, and realized I’d made a tactical mistake. She told me her story really got going on the next page, and that I was wrong to tear it up the way I did. She defended her work with gusto. Hey, other people had seen the chapter, and said it was just fine! When I explained readers wouldn’t get past the first two paragraphs to see that great work, she said, “Well—some will!”

I’ve since resolved never to touch that hot stove again, and will only edit for writers who realize their work can be improved, and who give me explicit permission to do it.

I really should have learned this lesson from a prior experience. A few years ago I saw a dozen “first chapters” while serving as a romance writer contest judge, and edited the first two or three pages of each to show areas where the writers could improve their work. Remember, these writers had polished their work to within an inch if its death, so the work was as good as they could do. I got a scorching letter from one writer who flailed me heavily about the head and shoulders, pointing out that my editing would crush other writers’ egos (but not hers, she hastened to add). She accused me of editing the submissions as a way to get new clients.

I never did that again.

Another time I attended a local group’s critique session where six writers read their pages. When it came my time to offer my view on one submission I pointed out the writer’s dialog was much too long—some passages went for pages without a break—and suggested ways to cut it down and make it user-friendly. The attendees were silent for a moment, then the gentleman across from me said, “But that’s her voice!” He turned to her and said, “I wouldn’t change a thing,” to which she replied, “Oh, I won’t. I won’t!”

I saw her across the room as I left the meeting, and realized I was looking at a writer who probably would never be published.

The point of all this? When someone critiques or edits your work, thank them for their insight and move on. Just as you shouldn’t argue with a reviewer, you shouldn’t beat up your critiquer. And recognize that some of those critiquers may actually know what they’re doing.

The lesson I took home from those incidents is to keep my criticisms to myself, at least until I’m specifically asked to give them. I’ll join those editors and agents by smiling, commenting on the author’s sincerity and good ideas, and move on.

Brenda’s poor money management skills (that’s his view, but what does he know?) and lawyer David Hasbrough’s ridiculous need to control her life (that’s her well-reasoned evaluation of the situation) combine to keep the battle going. Is this couple’s romantic goose cooked? Well, she can’t be near him without sparks flying and goose bumps popping out everywhere. But that mansion has to be done right!

NOTE: Don McNair actually lived in this house, and did the very things to it that he has heroine Brenda Maxwell do.

When Erica Phillips visits choice inherited property on a Cumberland Plateau knob overlooking a beautiful valley, she finds scientist Mike Callahan camped there to study unique fireflies. She needs to sell it fast to buy a new building for her antiques business, but he freaks out when a condo builder offers her a contract. Miffed, she tells him, “If I have my way, this place will be sold within the week. And, Mr. Callahan, I will have my way!”

Their budding romance plays out before a background of a murder mystery, distrust, and heart-racing hormones. Will it blossom into a lifetime relationship?

A GARDEN OF EARTHLY DELIGHTS

Pushed out of his own start-up company, Tom McKittrick is ready to lick his wounds in private at the rural family estate he’s inherited. But he isn’t prepared for his Garden of Eden to have a built-in Eve—a reclusive naturalist with a long-term lease on the caretaker’s cottage, a knack for gardening, and an incredibly beautiful face.

A PARADISE FOR TWO

April Fairchild is not about to let Tom McKittrick order her out of the home that has been her cozy retreat from the world. But she has to feel sorry for him—the corporate bigwig is clearly out of his element in, well, the elements. April knows she can teach this hunky guy a thing or two about how to relax. All she has to do is sow the seeds of romance…and let nature take its course.

Will April and Tom ever realize how much they need each other?

April and Tom are two of the most stubborn people on the planet. They both have their reasons for wanting to stay on the estate and both are so set in their ways they don’t even realize they are the only ones standing in the way of their happiness.

I really liked April’s spirit. After she left her husband, she escaped a stifling life in the city and moved across the country to pursue her own passion and start her an herb business. No longer would she be content to let others tell her how to live. I loved watching her care for the beautiful gardens on the estate as well as the many adopted cats she took under her wing. Her compassion for those around her made her a very warm and likable character.

At first, Tom comes off as a typical city boy. I smiled at all his failed attempts to adjust to country life when he first arrived at the estate. I could clearly picture how pitiful he must have looked when he showed up on April’s doorstep soaking wet in the middle of a thunderstorm. Though Tom is clueless when it comes to living in the country, he is a strong, smart man who clearly knows his way around the business world. However, Tom isn’t invincible. He has a mild heart condition and is under doctor’s orders to makes some changes to his lifestyle. The vulnerability of the heart condition softened Tom’s image as an executive suit and made him seem much more real and human in my mind.

Most of the secondary characters were types who simply filled in the background behind Tom and April. Tom has a lawyer with a sleazy attitude who cares for nothing but money. April’s friend, Raven, is an interesting character, but I don’t think he quite lived up to his potential. However, I will say that Raven’s appearances injected a bit of much needed humor into April and Tom’s lives.

One of the things I liked most about Risking It All was how well Tom and April complemented each other. They both had very different talents and skills that they could share with each other. Tom and April manage just fine when they are apart, but when they work together, they have the potential to accomplish anything they set their minds too. They also had great chemistry and watching them fall in love was a pleasure.

I enjoyed reading Risking It All. Tom and April’s verbal sparring was truly entertaining and their happy ending was well deserved. I recommend Risking It All to anyone looking for a quick and fun romance.

On the night of her betrothal, Lydia Trent receives just a taste of what ecstasy will be at the hands of her fiancé…and then he leaves her wanting. After waiting six years, and tired of being neglected by her exceedingly reluctant husband-to-be, Lydia decides to break it off.

When Marcus, Lord Russell, receives Lydia’s letter requesting a release from their contract, he is stunned by her audacity. Confident he’ll have her eating out of his hand with his usual wit and charm, he’s determined to repair the damage. However, the headstrong woman she’s blossomed into is equally determined to thwart his every effort to win her back.

Marcus discovers, in spite of her conviction to end the union, Lydia is more responsive to his touch than he ever imagined. He just needs to get her alone to unleash the promised passion he sees within his wanton virgin. Marcus will use any tool in his arsenal to exploit her weakness—his kisses, his hands, his mouth…her own body. In short, he’ll just have to ruin her!

What is that old saying? ‘If you play with fire, you’re bound to get burned.’

That is the lesson learned by our protagonist, Marcus. Reluctant to enter into a betrothal with Lydia, who is just turning seventeen, he does what is required by family obligation. His father and uncle, the Duke of Bedford, set up the match with no consultation from Marcus. He would prefer to focus on his own burgeoning political career, and still wants to sow his wild oats. Who wants to get married when you’re young and having fun?

And what’s the best way to put off your betrothed? Well, showing up to the engagement slash birthday party drunk of course. The young couple leave the party for a moment and Marcus’ true feelings about their engagement are revealed, of course crushing poor Lydia’s heart and dreams. But between trying to prove that she is not a child and his drunkenness, things get a little hot and heavy in the garden.

What Marcus didn’t know was that evening he started a low burn within Lydia. A burn he let simmer for six years! Now as a woman of twenty three and still not married, Lydia has had enough and asks to be released from the engagement with Marcus. While he was off playing political diplomat, Lydia was a home waiting and wanting until she grew into a sharp, educated woman. She has plans and dreams, and Lydia has had enough of Marcus’ blantant brush off to getting married. Can’t say I blame her, who makes a woman wait six years during that time period?

Of course Marcus’ pride is wounded by Lydia’s request and thus begins a witty and emotional game of chess between the two. Deciding to bite the bullet and finally concede to marrying Lydia, Marcus is shocked when he finds a beautiful and not only well rounded, but quick witted woman. And Lydia is shocked when she realizes that even though her mind is totally off marrying Marcus, her body is all full steam ahead to the idea. And so begins the cat and mouse game of should they or shouldn’t they get married.

I loved this book. So much so I have read it twice. Victoria Vane wrote a wickedly funny, sexy and witty tale about lust and love set in the Georgian Era as opposed to the typical Regency/Victorian you find in most historical romance. My favorite quote from the book is made by Marcus as he’s trying to convince Lydia that marrying him is in her best interest: “Our children.” He expounded in his most seductive tone. “The fruit of our loins that would be nothing less than heaven in the making.” My other favorite part of the story is the last few pages when Ms. Vane makes it clear that parents often do know “what’s best”.

I loved both characters immensely, both of their inner monologues had me giggling and yet the sex scene had me fanning myself. This is pretty raunchy for the time period, but in a good way and Ms. Vane does it in a very forward thinking way. Just overall an awesome read and top of my recommend list.
