A GARDEN OF EARTHLY DELIGHTS

Pushed out of his own start-up company, Tom McKittrick is ready to lick his wounds in private at the rural family estate he’s inherited. But he isn’t prepared for his Garden of Eden to have a built-in Eve—a reclusive naturalist with a long-term lease on the caretaker’s cottage, a knack for gardening, and an incredibly beautiful face.

A PARADISE FOR TWO

April Fairchild is not about to let Tom McKittrick order her out of the home that has been her cozy retreat from the world. But she has to feel sorry for him—the corporate bigwig is clearly out of his element in, well, the elements. April knows she can teach this hunky guy a thing or two about how to relax. All she has to do is sow the seeds of romance…and let nature take its course.

Will April and Tom ever realize how much they need each other?

April and Tom are two of the most stubborn people on the planet. They both have their reasons for wanting to stay on the estate and both are so set in their ways they don’t even realize they are the only ones standing in the way of their happiness.

I really liked April’s spirit. After she left her husband, she escaped a stifling life in the city and moved across the country to pursue her own passion and start her an herb business. No longer would she be content to let others tell her how to live. I loved watching her care for the beautiful gardens on the estate as well as the many adopted cats she took under her wing. Her compassion for those around her made her a very warm and likable character.

At first, Tom comes off as a typical city boy. I smiled at all his failed attempts to adjust to country life when he first arrived at the estate. I could clearly picture how pitiful he must have looked when he showed up on April’s doorstep soaking wet in the middle of a thunderstorm. Though Tom is clueless when it comes to living in the country, he is a strong, smart man who clearly knows his way around the business world. However, Tom isn’t invincible. He has a mild heart condition and is under doctor’s orders to makes some changes to his lifestyle. The vulnerability of the heart condition softened Tom’s image as an executive suit and made him seem much more real and human in my mind.

Most of the secondary characters were types who simply filled in the background behind Tom and April. Tom has a lawyer with a sleazy attitude who cares for nothing but money. April’s friend, Raven, is an interesting character, but I don’t think he quite lived up to his potential. However, I will say that Raven’s appearances injected a bit of much needed humor into April and Tom’s lives.

One of the things I liked most about Risking It All was how well Tom and April complemented each other. They both had very different talents and skills that they could share with each other. Tom and April manage just fine when they are apart, but when they work together, they have the potential to accomplish anything they set their minds too. They also had great chemistry and watching them fall in love was a pleasure.

I enjoyed reading Risking It All. Tom and April’s verbal sparring was truly entertaining and their happy ending was well deserved. I recommend Risking It All to anyone looking for a quick and fun romance.
