Back To School: or, What Will I Do With All of This Extra Time On My Hands…?
By
Maria-Claire Payne

First: happy fifth anniversary to Long and Short Reviews! In addition to this milestone event, I’m celebrating a milestone myself as this sultry summer here in Southern Florida transitions into… Oh, who am I fooling, right? Our summers here pretty much keep on going – and going… You get the idea. There was, however, an event that, in the past, has heralded the first days of the season I previously called “fall” before I left the Adirondacks in upstate New York for the swamps of Florida: my mornings included chauffeuring my kids to school — and everywhere else.

Not this year!

This year, my son starts his freshman year in college and my daughter now possesses her – gasp! – driver’s license. My chauffeuring days are over! I’ve been lost in wondrous daydreams for weeks, considering all of the extra time I’ll enjoy. To write! To knock down that TBR pile collecting in my reader! To drink a mug of coffee while it’s still steaming hot!

Yes, that was the fantasy as I flung myself – with great enthusiasm, mind you — into this year’s unique back-to-school mode with my college-bound freshman and my high school junior. Reality bites, I’m learning. Now I waste all of that time I hitherto spent, cold coffee in hand, driving their asses around worrying. I look at my daughter trip over a pile of books and bounce off a wall, giggling while she picks herself up from the floor. Yeah, I’m thrilled she gets behind a couple of tons of heavy metal every morning. I write erotica. What exactly will my son be up to several hundred miles away on his college campus?

“Back” to school? Not this year. This year, life is fast-forwarding. I’m excited to be on this roller-coaster, watching my offspring as they become young adults – and leaning over just every now and then to catch my breath while I try to keep my sense of equilibrium.

Hmmm…as I write this, I can hear my son tell his sister about the “hot babe” he meant during orientation a couple of weeks ago. She’s chatting about driving herself over to some boy’s house that she’s crushing on since she has a car now. While I stare into the dregs of cold coffee at the bottom of my cup, I reflect: maybe it’s time I consider writing “sweet” romances… Not that I’ll have much extra time, what with all this “back to school” excitement this year.

Yep. It’s fall!

Happy “back to school,” whatever that brings you this year!

Summer Vacation: Those words make my heart beat faster for two reasons. One, I love to travel and, in my mind, summer equals travel. And, two, my non-writing job involves teenagers and a rigid bell schedule. When the magical day in June rolls around and I lock my classroom door to mark the end of the school year, the fun begins.

I enjoy being home in the summer. I like sitting on the porch with my cup of coffee as I’m doing now. I might wander around in the garden snapping the heads off spent geraniums. I make treats for my kids that I don’t have time to do during the school year.

Nevertheless, my favorite part of summer is habitually the third week of June. We load the van with suitcases and snacks, strap the bikes to the top, and become nomads for the week. Our travels in recent years have taken us up and down the East Coast from Maine to Florida. Wherever we visit, be it Cape May, Virginia Beach, or St. Augustine, I’m always looking for a good story. Many of my stories have come from stateside World War II history I’ve discovered as we visited various destinations.

During the war, the eastern seaboard fortified itself against possible attack and the remains still exist. In Cape May, a concrete bunker crouches on the Jersey Shore and watchtowers dot the coast (including one inside an existing hotel). Miles south, the physical evidence is missing, but pictures and books commemorate the time when St. Augustine became a Coast Guard training station centered at the historic Ponce de Leon Hotel.

These places and their pasts have formed the beginnings of some wonderful stories for me as I’ve imagined what it was like to be alive under the shadow of WWII. All of these images are colored by the warmth of summer as that is when I saw the physical locations. When I write, I start with a place, add characters and conflict, then sprinkle in history. A good summer vacation will inevitably become a novel. I’ve celebrated Cape May in two novellas, Landed by a Flyboy and Cape May Serenade (from Desert Breeze Publishing. Plus, Ellen Takes Troy (due out in September from Wild Rose Press) takes place in St. Augustine during the last days of WWII.

I haven’t written the story of last summer’s trip to Maine, but I will. Happy Travels!

Damon Sinclair is a simple Marine with simple needs and after five years of active duty in the sandbox, he’s ready to settle down and feed people’s souls. But when the rest of his Brothers sign up with the 1Night Stand dating service, the opening night of his new restaurant includes a date with Madame Evangeline’s hand picked choice.

Helena Blake has focused her entire life on her education and legal career. But, there must be more to life than legal briefs and the Styrofoam take-out palace decorating the interior of her refrigerator. And finally, a year after signing up for the 1Night Stand service, Eve has found her a date.

Wine is poured, incredible food is served, and sparks fly creating a total seduction of the senses as Damon prepares a birthday celebration that Helena will never forget.

1Night Stand does it again. Another blind date – another perfect match.

This time it’s prodigy attorney Helena Blake, a woman who has spent nearly every waking moment working on her education and then her career. Desperate for some personal contact, the kind only a man could provide, she signed up for the 1Night Stand service. A year later, she was finally at the restaurant, waiting to meet her date.

Little did she know the restaurant was owned by that date, Damon Sinclair. Damon is a Marine – inactive, but once a Marine, always a Marine – who is juggling opening night of his restaurant with his date, but as soon as he sets eyes on Helena, his goals shift. She mistakes him for her waiter, and although he initially plays along, he ultimately confesses his identity, but not before slowly seducing her with the sights, smells and tastes of his incredible cuisine.

I loved this story, just as I have loved many others of the 1Night Stand series. The connection of the two individuals was perfect, the sex was smoking hot, and the promise of a future was clear. My only negative with this one was it was a little heavy on the cuisine aspect. Ms. Long definitely knows her stuff. She writes wonderfully, and I felt I was sitting at the table while Helena was being spoiled with the wonderful foods. I enjoyed it, but considering the short duration of the story, there was a little too much time spent on the food, and not enough on the ultimate coupling. Much of their life stories was told over the meal, and I enjoyed that, and I am amazed at the details included. There were just a few too many. It didn’t take away from my ultimate enjoyment, however!

Overall I can’t recommend this one enough. A hot Marine, a beautiful woman, and the promise of only one night. What an excellent premise for a story!

When her new neighbor’s loud music continues to interrupt her bubble baths, Marissa Coldtrail decides enough is enough. It’s time to teach the metalhead a lesson. It’s time to put the infuriating man in his place once and for all. Then she sees him—and wonders just how to get the hunk in bed without losing her cool.

Brian Levine is amused by the dark beauty from next door. Her voluptuous body makes him want to turn the volume down, but he’s never been that much of the agreeing type. Still, there are other ways to resolve a friendly neighborly dispute.

Like finding a way to cool her vicious temper. Like showing her that bubble baths can’t please like metalheads can…

Marissa Coldtrail loved shedding the days stress by sinking into a nice hot bubble bath; there, all her troubles would disappear. With candles casting a soft light and the sweet sounds of Luther Vandross playing, Marissa would simply lay back, close her eyes and drift into a state of bliss. That was until her next door neighbor decided to blast heavy metal music disturbing her bliss by rattling the walls. When yelling and banging on the walls doesn’t help, Marissa decides it’s time to meet the person who ruined her relaxation.

Brian Levine, fresh from the Midwest, used heavy metal music to relax after a hard day’s work. He had no idea his choice of music was disturbing anyone until Marissa cornered him in the hallway and told him that his music was ‘loud, foul and obnoxious’. He thought it was amusing that she was upset because he had interrupted her bubble bath with his music, he was less amused when she started calling him Metalhead.

It was inevitable that Marissa and Brian were going to end up together despite their differences, which made for a very enjoyable read. It had this reader smiling throughout and it was fun to see how Marissa, who had never dated anyone who was not the Denzel Washington type, became so drawn to Brian.

Marissa and Brian were charming. I especially enjoyed watching Marissa when she tried to explain to Brian how important a bubble bath is to the well being of a person. Brian’s confusion was pretty typical of a man when she proceeds to give him bubble bath facts; so is his solution to the dilemma.

The way these two characters were presented was so appealing that I wished this novella was more than 35 pages. This reader became engrossed in their love affair and was chuckling as Marissa tried to introduce Brian to soul music and he tried to get her to listen to Led Zeppelin. Bubble Bath Delight was a fun read which I’m sure will appeal too many, pick up a copy and see for yourself.

Leah Manning grew up among so many domineering, protective males that it left her frustrated, longing for a different life. Her family couldn’t understand that she needed to dance. Unknowingly, she’d embroiled herself in a deadly game from which there seemed no way out. Now she was home. Would they welcome her back? What if trouble followed? Most importantly, did Cal still work the ranch?

Brian Calhoun, Cal to his friends, hated Leah when she’d left, but hated himself even more for not going after her. Now she was back and more lovely than ever. Would his adolescent love for her return, develop into something more, or die a slow death at the hands of this new Leah?

Trouble does follow Leah home, and her ex will stop at nothing—even murder—to silence her. Will the terror draw Leah and Cal closer together or drive them apart forever?

Leah Manning is back to her hometown, and trouble followed her along the way.

As the story opens, the reader is thrown into Leah’s life and the trouble she’s in. We see it through her eyes as she witnesses a crime. I instantly sympathized with her and wanted to read the rest of her story. When Leah comes back home, her family takes her in with open arms. I enjoyed watching the interaction between this large cast of characters. They all loved each other. No one judged Leah for the choices she made. These characters were the heart of the story.

There was the trouble that followed Leah home and the suspense of the story. Her jealous, psycho ex-boyfriend wanted her all to himself, and if he can’t have her then no one can. Every time Leah turned around, the threat of him killing her or hurting one of the people she cared for became more real.

The story flowed like water through the first half of the book and I couldn’t put it down. However, near the middle I found a stumbling block. The reason was the heroine herself. She was too perfect and too pretty. I’m not a big fan of “Mary Sue” type characters and that’s the best way to describe Leah. It would have been nice if she would have had some character flaws or quirks. The supporting characters were much more enjoyable than the lead and they were the ones that pulled this story together.

As a whole, I did enjoy the book. The plot was entertaining and the supporting cast was enjoyable. I especially liked Michael, and was mildly annoyed that he was attracted to Leah. I could picture him with a much stronger and sassier woman in his life. I would really like to see Ms. Nelson add to the Thunder Creek Ranch collection by writing Michael his own story.

I would recommend the story to other readers who enjoy a good romantic suspense.

Belinda has spent her life trying to find who she is sexually. When Madame Eve on the 1 Night Stand Dating Service suggests what she needs is a Dom to control her submissive side, Belinda isn’t convinced but can’t deny her guilty attraction to the idea.

David, is a Dominant in need of a sub. Having heard rave reviews about Madame Eve’s power of matching people to their sexual mate, he gives in and contacts her. He isn’t really looking for just one night with a woman playing games, though, he lives the lifestyle and he craves the submission of a woman ready to join him.

Will this be Madame Eve’s first failure or is Belinda really ready to learn to submit?

When Belinda uses Madame Eve and 1 Night Stand she almost balks at what Madame Eve tells her. Yet, after much consideration Belinda finds that Madame Eve may just be right and she takes the plunge and accepts her date and his rules for the night. David longs for a woman who he can be himself with and show his Dominant ways to. Once he sees Belinda he hopes she’s the one, a woman who will be the sub to his Dom. Belinda’s more than ready to try but is she ready for more than just the one nightstand?

Although I enjoyed this story, because it’s so short I didn’t connect with the characters on a personal level. It felt more like a scene in Belinda and David’s story. I did enjoy meeting these two and I would love to see where David and Belinda’s relationship goes from here.

This is a quick hot read about a woman who discovers just what she wants and enjoys in her love life. David is a strong Dom who wants only to find the sub of his dreams. He has a big heart and is ready to give it to Belinda. She’s a woman who is ready to make a leap into the unknown and trusts David to take care of her. I enjoyed watching David introduce Belinda into his world. The two make a nice couple. The heat turns up as the two begin their night and turns into flames as they enjoy themselves. It was nice to see these two interact. They truly seemed to be made for each other.

This was Stan Nelchik’s first Father’s Day without his dad. The father of three girls himself, Stan was inherently protective, and came to believe in his father’s admonition that he was meant to be a “girl father,” not having the ability to handle a son.

“With boys, you gotta spit things out,” the senior Nelchik had always advised. “You can’t keep anything from them.”

But now, as Stan faces his first Father’s Day as a parent without his dad, he has to come to grips with the truth—his father, contrary to his own advice, had kept something from him, releasing it only on his death bed.

A visit from a stranger forces Stan into a decision that makes him realize just how difficult fatherhood can be—even when it doesn’t involve a member of your family.

Is honesty always the best policy? How does one balance telling the truth with protecting the innocent?

In some ways Mr. Nelchik has never stopped walking in his father’s shadow. Despite never serving in any wars or, to the best of my knowledge, being the victim of any crimes he has spent his entire adult life preparing for the “worst case scenario”. For example, in one scene he tells his daughter, Sophie, to say something like this when she’s home alone and hears someone enter the house:

“Hey Bruno, come and take the dogs for a walk, will you?”

So that, if the person walking in is an intruder, he or she will assume there are several dogs and a man in the house instead of one teenage girl. This attention to detail and personal safety is something most people don’t incorporate into their daily lives. The fact that the Nelchik family has carried on this tradition for three generations (even if Mr. Nelchik’s daughters are a little less enthusiastic about the idea than is their father or grandfather) intrigued me from the beginning.

Small details like this are what makes Foxhole such a treat, though. I started reading it expecting a much more action oriented plot but was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed slowly unfolding the mystery as the characters lived through one more seemingly ordinary day.

Foxhole shows in vivid detail how the decisions we make ripple not only through the rest of our lives but sometimes through the lives of our descendants as well. Rather than telling the reader what could or should have been done instead, though, Mr. Vanore leaves it up to us to imagine alternative futures for these characters. I cannot imagine a better ending to this fantastic little story.

Book four in the Kemet Uncovered Series

I am nature’s representative. I give my voice when the earth cannot. My work sent me on an intersecting course with a stubborn, arrogant, and hard-headed man named, Kenric Annson.

Although I don’t understand him I can’t help but be attracted to him. His smouldering looks and heated caresses have rattled me unlike any before him. The cosmos have an interesting sense of humour.

Me, who has lived longer than he could possibly imagine can be struck mute by something so simple as his touch. What’s a goddess to do when she wants the one man who has the means destroy her beloved earth? Kill him? Save him?

Saffron

Kenric Annson and his crew are digging in the mines of Somalia for natural gas when the powers-that-be sent a civilian to help them find the natural gas pockets. Kenric was annoyed because he did not want to babysit ‘a rock doc’. Kenric felt he had his hands full protecting his men from the bands of Muslim extremists who attacked them constantly and he didn’t need to add someone else to his list. However, when Saffron Eshe arrived at the site Kenric was instantly struck by her beauty and his only thought was that he would love to ‘see her in a bikini or nothing at all’.

The owner of the mine, Kade Grimmel, Frank’s brother, sent Doctor Saffron Eshe, a geologist, to help Kenric and the miners find the natural gas. She’s beautiful, arrogant, confident and immediately let Kenric know that this ‘rock doc’ could take care of herself. She’s also completely attracted to Kenric and would like nothing more than to wrap herself around him. Which is what she does the first time he took her into the mine, she gave into the urge and kissed him.

Kenric couldn’t understand the overwhelming need to protect Saffron, especially since she irritated him so much, but what he didn’t know was that Saffron wasn’t what she appeared to be. Saffron Eshe was the Egyptian goddess Qetesh, protector of the earth, and her main purpose for being there was to protect what she loved. Saffron realized that they were blasting near the fault line and she could feel the earth’s unhappiness. She also felt something else, she felt desire for a human and she didn’t quite know what to make of that.

Taige Crenshaw and Aliyah Burke are two of my favorite writers, when they weave a tale the reader becomes so engrossed in the characters and the story that you feel like you are right there with them. Saffron, the fourth book in the Kemet Uncovered Series, did not disappoint this reader. The main characters as well as the supporting characters were woven expertly into the fabric of the story. Each character had a purpose and this reader cared about each one, and couldn’t wait for the villain of the tale to be handled. Although this novella was only 71 pages, the characters were well developed and the story did not leave me feeling like it had been rushed. Saffron mixed ancient Egyptian lore with a modern day setting which allowed this reader to sit back and enjoy an absolutely beautiful story.

When Nowhere is Safe

Most people avoid the dreaded Whitecapel district. For Honoria Todd, it’s the last safe haven. But at what price?

Blade is known as the master of the rookeries—no one dares cross him. It’s been said he faced down the Echelon’s army single–handedly, that ever since being infected by the blood–craving he’s been quicker, stronger, and almost immortal.

When Honoria shows up at his door, his tenuous control comes close to snapping. She’s so…innocent. He doesn’t see her backbone of steel—or that she could be the very salvation he’s been seeking.

Bec McMaster combines the very best of the old style vampire story with the faster pace of the more contemporary in her novel, Kiss of Steel. It’s an entirely successful combination with the wonderfully eerie backdrop of London’s Whitechapel district creating a detailed, yet, never distracting backdrop. Honoria Todd is a clever but believable (especially for the time period) main character…and ‘Blade’ is both frightening and devastatingly attractive. This is a vastly different – yet somehow the same – London that we’ve imagined a thousand times as presented in the Victorian era, only …this is a London with a culture of blood.

Even though this will appeal to fans of the paranormal – the story isn’t confined to realms of paranormal, nor predictable in any way. The Duke of Vickers is an unexpected dark force in this – so the story is vastly more than the trial between a vampire and his victim. There are the ever-present dangers of the dark side of London, the endless sensual appeal of “Blade”.

Indeed, Honoria must battle and barter for her own protection – little imagining how she is insidiously being snared along the way. On the other hand, it seems easy for her enemies to underestimate her. But, who is the enemy? Everyone, and no one – this is a complex tale and few things are as they seem.

Kiss of Steel is more than a romance, and more than a vampire tale, although it will appeal to both. It’s ultimately Honoria’s story, her battle for triumph… or surrender. Riveting! Put it on your Must Read list.

A simple text leads to a case of mistaken communication and before long Riley Anderson finds herself tied to her bed and being driven to distraction. Beckett Manning, host of Room Makeovers, knows how to tease and torture every inch of her skin. He also knows his way around an orgasm, which keeps Riley wanting more. And more. And more.

Beckett is ready to give Riley more than a remodeled kitchen. He’s about to bring her to the edge of ecstasy and back. Whether it’s hot sex in the bathtub or Riley hog-tied to the bed, he’s determined to show this brazen beauty how desirable she really is.

Out with the old and in with the new was Riley’s unspoken motto as she took fate into her hands and decided to make a change. Little did she know that fate had different ideas for her!

Riley is sick of having her ex keeping her from moving forward in life. So she decides to take matters into her own hands, literally. After demolishing her kitchen which was a project on the ‘plan to do but never going to do’ list with her ex, she heads to the local home improvement store. Riley found a whole lot more then just new cabinets and countertops!

Beckett is the host of a popular reality show where he finds unsuspecting homeowners and helps them with room remodels. As soon as his eyes zero in on the fiery head of Riley, its lust at first sight. He hopes to himself she’s in need of him, and not just his TV show. When they finally met, the sparks fly! After accepting Beckett’s help, they begin a path that not only fixes Riley’s kitchen, but her tattered pride as well.

I thought the plot was fun for this book, and overall its a sexy story. But there were some things that were just a little off. One was character development for Beckett, yes he’s a good guy and a hunky TV host. But other than learning he likes some kink with his sex, we don’t know anything else about him. And his friend/co-worker Patrick didn’t seem to fit with his constant nagging.

However, Riley was a refreshing take on a strong woman. Despite her misgivings about her previous sex life, she went full court press and was honest and open with Beckett. My favorite part of the book is the text messages, which I won’t ruin. The first one had me almost spitting my drink out. And Amber Skyze can really write some sex scenes, don’t worry there are plenty here!

I noted that this has BDSM, but I will say it’s very light but there are a couple scenes that put it over in that grey area so I thought it would be a safe bet to mention that. Overall its a sexy read, and one to read with a tall glass of ice water!
