When your safety depends on living a lie…

After escaping certain death, deep-cover agent Colin Donovan is back home on the Maine coast with his new love, FBI art crimes expert Emma Sharpe. Then Tatiana Pavlova, a London-based jewelry designer, arrives in Heron’s Cove, asking for Emma’s help—a prized collection from a lost era of Russian opulence, decadence and rare beauty has resurfaced, and Tatiana warns Emma it’s about to be stolen again. And Colin realizes his nightmare isn’t over. It’s just begun.

And everyone you love is a target…

Emma guards her past closely, and Colin is determined to unlock her secrets. As they investigate the mysterious collection and the equally mysterious Tatiana, they confront their greatest challenge. Now they must count on their expertise—and each other—to outwit an enemy who wants to destroy them and everyone they love most.

Who can you afford to trust?

Trouble’s afoot when the story starts. Colin Donovan, a ghost FBI agent, has been gone and silent too long. Emma Sharpe, Father Finian Bracken, and Colin’s brothers Mike, Andy, and Kevin gather at Hurley’s in Rock Point, Maine for whiskey tasting but more important for support as they wait and worry. The undercurrent of suspense ebbs and flows from beginning to end of HERON’S COVE.

Colin operates on instincts and has kept himself alive through tough jobs. But he needs help this time. An illegal arms deal has gone bad.

Emma Sharpe of the Sharpe Fine Art Recovery family, ex-nun, and now FBI agent gets a call from a trusted source from long ago. “Your man is in danger” and an address. Her call to her FBI boss Matt Yankowski secures Colin’s escape.

Now, the intrigue, the tangle of Emma and Colin’s pasts, the balancing of strong personalities, and the threat of danger for both their families and their friends create tensions in all directions. Old secrets, old and new greed, and love that hangs in there through it all keeps the reader “smack-dab” in the middle of the action.

Carla Neggers’ strong characters, even the secondary ones, and her skill in weaving together multiple secrets and sub-plots into the main plot make HERON’S COVE spellbinding.

Emma’s analytical, measured, never impulsive approach to a situation along with her unique connection to the art world make her a valuable asset to Matt Yankowski’s team in the FBI. While Colin’s bold, aggressive, “go-it-alone, instinctive methods make him a ghost that serves the FBI well. BUT, when their worlds get tangled both personally and professionally, Matt Yankowski says it’s like opening two cans of worms on steroids—volatile—explosive.

Emma’s intriguing connection with billionaire Russian Dmitri Rusakov and Ivan Alexander keeps Colin off-balance and edgy, but his not-to-be-denied attraction to and need for Emma makes him determine to keep her close—preferably in his house, in his bed.

Colin’s family accepts Emma, but they size her up wondering if she can fit in Colin’s life while she wonders if Colin and the Donovans can fit in her life. Mike, the oldest brother, is a loner and plain spoken. He has reservations about Emma that she can feel. Kevin, the policeman, and Andy, the lobsterman, just enjoy Emma’s company with a wait and see attitude.

Father Finian Bracken, Colin’s friend and confidante, understands Emma and plays a unique role in events as the story unfolds. He has a compelling story all his own.

If you read SAINT’S GATE, you probably feel like it is reunion time—so good to catch up with these characters, But, there’s little time for visiting. Former client of the Sharpes, Russian billionaire Dmitri Rusakov brings his fancy yacht to Heron’s Cove. His friend and body guard Ivan Alexander, who has a special place in his heart for Emma, is aboard. They bring trouble, trouble that connects to Colin’s illegal arms trouble. My goodness, what a tangle things get in when tiny, feisty Tatiana and sophisticated Natalie stir the pot.

The way Ms. Neggers makes every little piece fit together and her vivid descriptions amazes. She pulls the reader into the environment so completely one can almost feel the October rain in Maine, feel the squish of mud under foot, and shiver with Tatiana hidden by the canoe. One feels the unspoken fear in the characters. The desire and uneasiness in Emma and Colin’s relationship as it ebbs and flows like the tide keeps the reader turning pages as they move in fits and spurts toward a happy-ever-after that will never, ever, be dull.

HERON’S COVE teems with intriguing characters like Finian who is so much more than a priest: Andy, the rake, at least according to Julianne Maloney; and Mike Donovan that lives in isolation much of the time and seems gruff, but whom Emma knows has a romantic heart. Maybe Ms. Neggers will tell us their stories some day. HERON’S COVE is a keeper to be enjoyed more than once.

HE HAD A PERFECTLY ORDERLY LIFE…

William, the sixth Duke of Pelham, enjoys his punctual. securely structured life. Orderly and predictable—that’s the way he likes it. But he’s in the public eye, and the scandal sheets will make up anything to sell papers. When the gossips link him to Juliette, one of the most beautiful and celebrated courtesans in London, chaos doesn’t begin to describe what happens next…

UNTIL SHE CAME ALONG…

Juliette is nicknamed the Duchess of Dalliance, and has the cream of the nobility at her beck and call. It’s seriously disruptive to have the duke who’s the biggest catch on the Marriage Mart scaring her other suitors away. Then she discovers William’s darkest secret and decides what he needs in his life is the kind of excitement only she can provide…

Dignity, punctuality, routine, and responsibility mean little to Juliette, the Duchess of Dalliance, but they rule William, the Sixth Duke of Pelham. His “mind-numbing” routine, drilled into him by an unloving father, never lets him forget—he is a DUKE.

When he publicly cuts Juliette and calls her a strumpet, nothing more than a well-paid whore, she calls him an insufferable ass. Even though she’s divorced and known as a courtesan, she’s not made of stone. His cruel words hurt but she cannot let it show if she wants to keep her exalted place in society.

When these two become co-conspirators to find a murderer, the friction between them wears away the calloused, rough edges until their true personalities shine. It’s a slow sometimes painful process, but it polishes them to a breathtaking awareness that nurtures love like neither of them has ever known.

Elizabeth, the duke’s fiancée; Lucifer, the gambling hell owner; and Oliver Clifton, Juliette’s ex-husband, are little more than shadowy characters, yet they have remarkable influence on the action. They fuel the mystery, fear, and suspense, while Lily, the Countess of Charm; Fallon, the Marchioness of Mystery; and the Earl and lady Sinclair fuel mystery of another kind and a tale that surrounds the Three Diamonds and their relationship to the Earl.

The other secondary characters help weave together the intriguing elements of the plot that prove to have political entanglements as well as the ton’s insatiable curiosity and societal pitfalls. Of course, “where are the stolen diamonds?” is a prominent thread ever present in the plot.

Shana Galen gives some insight into the personalities of the primary characters and sets up a situation before immersing the reader into murder, mischief, mystery, and meanness. As she shepherds the hero and heroine along through happenings that threaten societal suicide for them, she keeps the tension high. With subtle humor and poignant back stories, she makes the characters seem real. The awakening of the Duke of Pelham to a life not ruled by routine and always having to be “a DUKE” captivates. The part Juliette plays in his awakening brings her out of the category of divorcee and courtesan to become the person she’d dreamed of being.

When You Give a Duke a Diamond is a Regency romance that reveals the mores of the time and has just enough twists and turns in it to keep one turning pages; but most of all it entertains with wonderful characters having to deal with just enough conflict to show their strengths and weakness that make them seem so human and so deserving of their happy-ever-after. A joy to read!

That girl in English class, the one who started on her essay or reading assignment the day it was handed out? Yeah, that was me. A camera was never far from my fingertips either, and anyone walking the school halls was fair game to having their photo snapped for the yearbook. I had grand dreams of becoming a photojournalist. Then my parents moved a few days after my graduation, and at seventeen I was on my own and all dreams were put on hold. I bounced around from place to place for a couple of years, married young, had three beautiful boys. “Me” became replaced with “Mom”. For twenty-some years, I immersed myself in raising my kids. Nothing was more important. I still took photos, I still read whenever I could steal a moment, but writing took such a backseat, it was more likely found huddled and neglected in the trunk.

As my boys got older and became involved in sports, I started submitting write-ups of their games to the local paper and they always got printed. That small success fueled the fire kept on slow simmer for too many years. On my fortieth birthday, I sat myself down, as people tend to do, and asked what did I still want to achieve for “me”? I wanted to write a book. So I did. And it was terribly bad. But the bug had bitten. I wrote another one, then another and another… I took classes, attended conferences, joined writing groups, and I began getting “good” rejection letters. (I know, right? Total oxymoron.)

About that time, my life shifted gears again. With my children at an age where they no longer needed constant attention, my hubby and I began to travel. I found an entire world out there to explore and photograph, and digital photography made it so easy and fun. I stopped writing halfway through a story, just completely stopped writing. But if you have a true passion for something, it can’t be denied. It took a couple years, but I gradually found my way back to writing. I still haven’t finished that abandoned story, but I will. Another of my stories called to me first, my favorite one. I edited it, brought it into the twenty-first century (my, how the world has changed in those few brief years), submitted it and yay – Show No Weakness has recently been published.

I confess to being partial to wounded heroes. I enjoy reading about them and most of my stories are about them, although sometimes I’ll pick on the heroine. Two of my other favorite classes in school were Sociology and Psychology and I blame my fascination with the human psyche for this compulsion to torment my characters.

And poor Cole, the strong, tough-as-nails cop in Show No Weakness, is certainly tormented. He’s hiding from a pain too terrible to face. Then he meets Joely, social worker and single mom to a teenage son, who’s blatantly open about her emotions and her compulsion to help anyone in need. Cole is definitely in need. To learn more about Cole and Joely, please visit my website at http://www.JoyceHolmes.wordpress.com.

I’ve learned a few things along the path to this place I now find myself. I’ve learned life is about striking a balance. You don’t necessarily have to give up one thing to enjoy another. And never give up on a dream, even if it has to ride in the trunk for a while first.

Lace is a thing like hope.
It is beauty; it is grace.
It was never meant to destroy so many lives.

The mad passion for forbidden lace has infiltrated France, pulling soldier and courtier into its web. For those who want the best, Flemish lace is the only choice, an exquisite perfection of thread and air. For those who want something they don’t have, Flemish lace can buy almost anything-or anyone.

For Lisette, lace begins her downfall, and the only way to atone for her sins is to outwit the noble who know demands an impossible length of it. To fail means certain destruction. But for Katharina, lace is her salvation. It is who she is; it is what she does. If she cannot make this stunning tempest of threads, a dreaded fate awaits.

You know the saying, too many books, too little time? It sums up my dilemma perfectly. Sometimes it’s a choice between fiction and the many books on historical events I want to read by year’s end. Lucky for me I got the best of both worlds in The Ruins of Lace.

It’s a fascinating read and shows how much work and effort the author took in researching the topic of lace and its impact on culture and society in 16th century France. What made it all the more captivating was the author decided to tell this story from lots of viewpoints and how lace, its production, and the need to own it, affected people’s life. I also enjoyed, and excuse the pun, how all these individual’s stories became woven together as the book progressed.

All the characters were well-rounded, and the dialogue natural sounding. You might think a book of this length and subject matter would be slow paced, but this one was anything but. I found myself carrying it with me and was compelled to read what happened next at any chance I got.

I will definitely be looking for more books by Iris Anthony. If you’re looking to read something a little different this fall, I highly recommend this one.

When demons invade Detroit, four modern day pagan warriors go to work, but they need a little extra help from their favorite sexy witch. Phoebe has been their magical contact for years, but none of the men have dared break ranks to make a move. A protection spell won’t cut it this time. The group needs sex magic to boost their skills and bond them on a new level. Sharing a hot witch is one thing, but two of the men have issues that make baring their feelings harder than their bodies. Phoebe is determined to have them all and bring love to the warriors’ world.

Why double your pleasure when you can quadruple it by having four sexy warriors in the bed? Phoebe has been pining over Andy, Jude, DC and Reed. So when she is presented with the opportunity to act on those feeling she hops on to the closest hard surface and makes herself more than accessible to the men.

When I began this story I worried that I would get the characters confused, especially the four men, but that was not the case. Each seemed to have their own distinct personality that made it simple for me to distinguish each of them from the others. For example, Jude seems to have a subtle command about him that makes others follow him without even realizing it. DC is the heart of the group, his caring personality makes the others want to be around him. Andy has a spice for life, which had me smiling from ear to ear at times. Reed is the most lost of all of the characters, even so he’s determined to protect those he care about no matter the cost. Together this groups is unstable and truly entertaining.

The subplot with the demons, in my opinion, could have used some spicing up. Even though it’s the basis for everyone coming together, I felt it could have had a more dominant place in the story. For example, I would like to have seen a bit more action in the battles. I think that it would have added some adrenaline that would have helped build the tension.

The romantic plot in this story was exciting. You had couples, potential couples and a group all intertwined between these five people. At times I questioned, along with the characters, how they would make it work, but in the end everyone seemed to be getting what they wanted and what they needed, which is what all relationships are truly about.

The romantic involvement and wonderful characters made this an easy read and I would love to see more of these characters.

In worlds where the veils are thin, the forces of darkness and light blur to twilight gray. Eight tales of magical gardens, lost temples, cosmic alignments, immortal predators, shapeshifters, wizards and gods will transport you to realms where the rules are different, nothing is as it seems and the heart keeps the balance of ages. Told on a rich tapestry of tree and animal lore, romance, dreams, visions and verse.

Let’s take a walk in the woods. When you come back out, you won’t be the same person you were when you went in.

This book contains eight short stories about the wild side, a world full of magical and mythical beings, and the odd creatures that live in the dark shady places. All the stories are interesting and fun to read. This author gives his stories depth and gave this reader the feeling I was actually in that time and place. I had two that really appealed to me.

The Trouble with Tansy is the first. If you’ve ever grown a garden in the northwest, you have to watch for tansy. It will take over your garden space and is impossible to kill easily. You have to dig it out. This tale is about a young witch caring for her garden and a wizard’s apprentice who wants her. He starts by taking half a rose bush, then plants tansy in her garden plot, and then he changes the weather to kill ALL her plants. She goes to visit the Old One to get help. The girl just wants to be left alone. The Wizard’s apprentice is a bit full of himself and determined to get what he wants. The ending is quite ironic.

My other favorite is Eating Crow. It’s about a shapeshifter and has lots of action and an interesting ending.

I like reading short tales. A writer must be more precise and able to express himself in few words if he wants to get his point across. All these stories were well-done. I also enjoy the bit of fantasy.

Shapeshifters, gods, witches and more live in these pages. Are you brave enough to wander through the woods with them?

Peggy Maynard goes down to the basement one morning to find her husband working on the painting of a young woman. He covers the painting as if to conceal it from her. Then, one day, both Will and the painting disappear from her home and from her life. This initiates a long journey of self-searching, while Peggy wonders why she didn’t see warning signs in her marriage, why she didn’t leave him before.

One day, Detective Byers, who’s on the case, tracks down a doctor who attended a former student of Will’s – Irma Vasquez. Eighteen years prior, she had a baby, and it appears the father is Will.

Peggy’s search for her missing husband leads her to Queretaro, Mexico, where a startling discovery forces her to decide what her relationship with Will was truly made of, or if they ever really had one.

How well do you know your spouse? After twenty-five years together Peggy thought she knew everything about her husband Will but when he disappears under mysterious circumstances she’s forced to reexamine her assumptions.

I was sucked into this mystery before the first paragraph ended. Peggy’s conversation with the police officer investigating her husband’s disappearance expertly wove her anxiety, grief and fear into a few short sentences. It’s difficult to accurately portray the mixed, occasionally conflicting emotions the average person experiences when being interviewed about an alleged or potential crime but Ms. Ambardar captures this experience beautifully.

Peggy and Will’s relationship is described as “mellow.” They’ve been a couple for many years and while they care for one another their chemistry isn’t particularly passionate or romantic. While I’ve known people who ended up in this sort of situation there was something about Peggy and Will’s interactions that never quite felt genuine. Peggy’s memories of their years together made their arrangement sound more like a business decision than two people falling in love and creating a life together.

To be honest I expected it to end with the revelation that these characters were a lesbian and gay or bisexual man who married one another to give the appearance of heterosexuality. Had they been involved in a plot that wasn’t concerned with love and marriage this wouldn’t have been an issue but my misunderstanding of the nature of their relationship did dampen my enthusiasm for this story.

The actual ending wrapped up enough plot points to satisfy this reader but I still walked away from it wondering why Peggy and Will chose to remain together for so many years. This puzzled me so much I reread the story and was pleasantly surprised to find myself enjoying it more the second time around when I could enjoy these characters for the individuals they were instead of spending so much time thinking about what I thought they should be doing instead.

The Girl in the Portrait can be read in one sitting. I’d recommend it to anyone looking for a compelling mystery that is not easily solved and grows better each time you read it.

What happened over my summer vacation? My young adult novel, Persephone, was published by Musa Publishing. Fitting, since I spent last summer editing it and querying my manuscript, and the summer before writing it.

My writing life is ruled by summers. Sure I work on my books during the year, but mostly in 5,000 word revisions with my writers group every other week. Hardly intensive writing. But I’m a graduate student. Now that the fall semester is starting, writing takes a back seat to reading.

But during the summer I can write when, where and what I want to, and for the last few summers I’ve visited the Underworld and met the gods. My summer vacations are full of myths and legends.

I like the Greek gods. For the moment, Hades is my favorite. But they all had such strong personalities. There was so much drama in Greek myths. It translates into a young adult novel very well. Obviously I’m not the only one to think so. Greek mythology is having its heyday in young adult literature. I sometimes wonder if in hundreds and thousands of years people will find these modern day takes on mythology and think that we never stopped believing in them. Will historians read these books and think the gods simply evolved with the times?

I don’t just write all summer. I read a lot too. But the books aren’t exactly what I read for grad school. This summer I’ve been reading the Immortal Instruments series by Cassandra Clair.

My favorite books have always had some supernatural elements but more importantly they’ve always been young adult. Young adult books tend to have better plot lines and stronger character development. Even between books by the same authors. I love Kelley Armstrong’s Women of the Otherworld series, but her young adult Darkest Powers series was much better to me. I don’t know if it’s just a matter of having less length to get everything in, so there’s less filler, or if it’s just that there’s more tension. An adult rarely has parents to contend with so there’s less sneaking around.

Whatever the reason, thanks to reading and writing young adult books my summers are filled with fun. I’m already counting down the days until my next summer vacation.

It’s going to be a long school year.

Humming Birds and Butterflies
by
Larriane Wills
I’m amazed that summer is almost over. Where did it go? Not on vacations. Who has time for them? My breaks from writing are short trips to the front yard when I take my dogs out and nearly always something I enjoy. Often, not every time because my head is too full of the story I left behind to answer my dogs, insistence they need a break, I think of the phrase ‘Stop and smell the roses.’

This last week walking out the door is akin to stepping into one of those animated scenes from Disney with butterflies floating across the screen. I don’t know what kind those inhibiting my yard are, don’t really care. They’re beautiful, oranges, blacks, and yellow, all different sizes. My butterfly bush, appropriately named, draws them in. They do share the space with the hummingbirds. Those fascinating little critters I could watch for hours. For their size, they are such militant creatures. Watching them chase each other off from the feeder I wonder how they ever manage to eat. I’ve nearly had hummingbirds in my hair on several occasions when they’ve been so engrossed in their battles they didn’t veer off until the very last foot to avoid a collision.

An added entertainment, on our short sojourns away from the refrigerated air and my computer, is one of my dogs has a thing about hummingbirds. Both my dogs are Maltese, a rescued pair I took when their owner had to move and couldn’t take them with them. Necco is the clown, but being nearly blind, I don’t believe he even sees the birds. Guy, on the other hand, takes their presence as some manner of invasion. Not like he could ever catch one, but he barks and chases them—as long as he can keep them in sight. They pop up into the air, hover, and stare down at him. Not sure of that white, noisy blob, no doubt not knowing the difference between a dog chasing aimlessly or a cat capable of springing after them, they fly off. He feels he’s done his duty in protecting the home land and trots off to bark at something else.

One bird, however, has the dog figured out. The feeder is at one end of the walk, the yard gate at the other. The bird, a brilliant colored male, takes off down the walk. Guy scrambles in pursuit until he reaches the gate. I laugh. Guy is at the gate barking in the direction he last saw the bird going. The bird, usually before Guy even reaches the walk, hangs a sharp left at the pine tree just beyond the gate, flies around the butterfly bush, and while Guy is at the gate barking, he’s sipping his full at the feeder. It’s the little things in life that entertain—when you’re not reading a good book.
