This is my first foray into the world of Joyee Flynn. I’d seen plenty of reviews and couldn’t wait to nab a book for myself. The plot is unique and filled with twists and turns. I liked meeting a new group of characters and seeing how they dealt with their gifts. This was a quick read and it had more than a few interesting moments.

Madden “Mad” Forrest has a tough job. He’s got paranormal abilities and it takes a lot out of him when he’s using them. He’s also in the market for a good time. Can’t say as I blame him, I mean, a man needs some recreation. I liked his non-commital qualities–just one night, something fun, get the tension out. Hey, he’s believeable in that respect. But I had a few quibbles with this story as well. It’s told in first person narrative, so there’s more than a little telling versus showing. I drifted from the story a couple times because I didn’t feel immersed in it. I also didn’t get to see things from Josh’s point of view and I think that would’ve added a degree of depth the story lacked. Now I realize it’s from Mad’s point of view, but the sex scenes felt rushed. I got the idea they were in the throes of passion, but I didn’t feel it. I wanted more discovery, more time to realize that they belonged together, not such quickness. It happened almost too fast and I struggled to overcome my disbelief. There are also a lot of characters, though I’m betting Ms. Flynn will give each one his own story and kudos.

The story itself is unique and the characters are interesting. I am certainly looking for more in this author’s backlist as she certainly writes some sizzling hot male/male scenes. Grab a copy of My Maven, My Everything for a smoking good time.

The only criticisms to be found in the work are that it tells us what’s happening throughout, instead of showing us, and the several instances in which the past of the hero is repeated. James recalls his former mate many times, as well as his disbelief that he could find love in the arms of another woman. It became unnecessary, as the reader is more than aware of his feelings. Fortunately, the interactions between Shelley and James overshadow the negative aspects of the book.

Shelley is a likeable heroine, and James is delicious as a hero who will defend her at all costs. Legacy Found shines as they cave to their feelings, accept them, and discover a world of pleasure and acceptance.

Fans of sizzling paranormal romance will enjoy Legacy Found. The twists and turns will keep you guessing, while the danger ups the ante and keeps things interesting. If you’ve not read this series, be sure to place them on your TBR pile.

Even though you never meet Fairy Queen Lucieene in this story, her presence is felt through out the entire book. Holly would have never even considered being a Naughty Godmother if it wasn’t for her mother’s (Queen Lucieene) influence. Although it might seem to be a strange career choice for a mother to want her daughter to take, being a Naughty Godmother is much more prestigious than being a Tooth Fairy.

Holly’s just been given a promotion, albeit not one that she particularly wants. But she tackles her new job the way she handles everything else in her life, with a wry sense of humor, a determination to do her best, and a sincere desire to help people. I really like how Holly and Mila’s friendship is portrayed, I only wish you got to see more of it. However, the two women complement each other very well, Mila being brash and bold where Holly is a bit more like the “girl next door.” It is so very easy to imagine all sorts of trouble that these two get into. I don’t want to give anything away but I have to say that Mila’s influence at a very pivotal moment is priceless, it is the perfect combination of her love for Holly and her wicked sense of humor.

Alex doesn’t quite know what’s going on when Holly quite literally falls into his arms after appearing from nowhere. Not one to believe in fairies and magic, he’s sure this is some elaborate practical joke that his colleagues are playing on him, but after getting a glimpse of Holly in her thong, it’s a practical joke he is more than willing to play along with. Being deep undercover and not having had sex for the last four months helps him cement Holly’s opinion that he is inept at dealing with women. This all works out well until the truth comes out, as it always does, leaving Alex bewildered at the existence of fairies and Holly hurt that he lied to her.

Alex is a great guy if a bit literal at times, but that is what makes him so good at his job. Undercover work is hard especially when you have to stay in character for such a long time. So it was very entertaining to see his internal monologue, warring with himself, going back and forth between what he wanted to do and what his character would/should do. You have to admire a guy for being able to maintain his cover when faced with the likes of Holly in her thong. The only thing that seemed really out of character for Alex were some of his emotional outburst after the truth came out. We all hate for men to be premature, either in the bedroom or out, while Alex usually doesn’t have a problem with the former there is at least one instance when he has a problem with the latter. Again I don’t want to give anything away but I will say that some things are better if you wait.

Naughty Godmother is a cute and sexy story that will make sure you never look at a Fairy Godmother in the same way again. This unique twist to the traditional fairy tale brings a new meaning to Happily Ever After.

Gunner and Talbot are complete opposites. This is a story that runs along the lines of Romeo and Juliet. Two people in love yet circumstances and rankings in life keep them apart. The pull between these two men is so evident that the scenes they share are just jumping with erotic energy.

Gunner, being a beta wolf, was brought to the pack to mate with a gamma wolf. Little did he know the omega of the pack was what he really wanted. Talbot was treated with respect and loved by all others. The one thing I wished there was more of in this story was more dialogue between Gunner and Talbot. In the story we get more of what they were thinking and feeling versus what they said to one another. Overall, though, this was an excellent read. I highly recommend it.

There’s much humor in this book too and aside from it only being 80 pages long, there’s action a plenty and the sex is hot, heavy and frequent. Ms. Newmar has set the stage for her next book about Scarlett and her longhorn lovers and it will be interesting to see what challenges and direction she takes them on. On the whole though, while I found the story likable and the premise entertaining, it was also rather forgettable. But if you like it light, fun, with a kinky twist on an old classic, Leo’s Crown might be just what you’re after.

Virgin blew me away with its entertaining story line, exciting possibilities and more purr-fectly charming Zetithians for fans to swoon over. Ms. Brooks might have heard me squealing in delight when I found out that Virgin is a continuation of the series that I fell in love with. I’m pretty sure I was that loud in my excitement. This is most definitely a standalone read because it picks up with one of the survivors of that ship at the end of Hero. I met a lot of new and fascinating characters and I commend the author and her creative talents.

What am I referring to? Every time the author introduces a new character, he or she appears so naturally and provides ample opportunities for the hero and heroine through their interactions with them to grow, and for the plot to move forward. Another thing with Ms. Brooks’ writing is her sense of humor. If her characters can pull off a joke or pun or have dialogue scenes with witticisms that make a reader roll on the floor, the author finds every one of them and uses them to perfection. In this latest book, her sense of fun and the ridiculous is as sharp as ever. All someone has to do is mention Ms. Brooks’ name and I break out into a grin.

When the book starts, a reader meets the heroine, Ava, first. I got the biggest kick out of her but don’t let her anywhere near your frying pans. She’s a woman with smokin’ hot passions and I’m not talking about her cooking. She’s courageous, clever, quick on her feet and even more alien than the past heroines in the series. I am in love with her hair. Kudos to the author for making something so ordinary into the most amusing, unique and captivating feature a heroine has ever had. It is a brilliant stroke of genius and is another testimony to Ms. Brooks’ vivid imagination.

Dax is one of the newly found Zetithians and he’s so dreamy. I really enjoyed reading about his falling in love and how he goes about it. I had an absolute blast with the secondary characters. Waroun constantly gave me the giggles, Kots was creepy and totally cool, Threldigan is a character I’d love to know more about, and Quinn was a character with a surprising bit of depth, after he took a bath.

Remember I mentioned fun dialogue? This line had me in stitches and is just a small example of the fun that is in store for readers throughout the entire book. “…you want to get dinner over with so you can get back to the ship and play snuggle bunnies with Super Kitten.” There are so many moments of wonderful repartee between Dax, Ava and the other characters that it made reading this story a breeze. I never knew who was going to say what and it guaranteed my absolute focus on the story. I didn’t want to miss a thing.

I’d be remiss if I didn’t tease readers with the hot factor in the book. Yes, the powerful snard is back but I also think the author challenged herself a bit with some of the physical relationship scenes this time around. It’s really eyebrow raising and quite erotic and yet even in the midst of all those increased pheromones, some scenes get tickled with the brush of humor to an enjoyable degree. I loved it!

It’s not all purrs, bites and sex in trees; there are some seriously nasty villains chasing Dax and Ava. At one point I thought there was one group but as I read I figured out that there were two factions chasing my new favorite hero and heroine and I didn’t know which group was worse and who was going to get to them first. It was a great bit of writing because it kept me on the edge of my seat. I liked the idea that things the main characters thought they knew were actually mistruths and the revelations were gripping. The confrontation was full of action and crisp writing and I felt like I was right in the thick of it. It’s another strong point in this book’s favor.

Virgin is high caliber entertainment from beginning to end – it hit all my happy buttons and I couldn’t put it down. I continue to be amazed as to the quality and vibrant imagery painted within its pages, whether it be flora, fauna or characters. Ms. Brooks has consistently written well thought out intricate stories that amuse and entertain and Virgin continues the trend. It’s been an awesome reading experience and I am so glad the author has more coming out. I simply can’t get enough of that snard!

Book Passion… Yeah, Baby!

No pastime is more pleasurable to me than reading a book as long as the story is one that I can’t put down. Sometimes, though, I have to read five or six books which are merely okay before I find the one that really carries me away. I enjoy writing for that same pleasure. It helps me fill the yearning for a story that satisfies. And if my stories don’t satisfy me, how can I expect them to satisfy someone else?

Yet, I’m aware that everyone has different tastes. A book that grips my imagination may not be one you would find particularly enthralling. I’m largely an historical fiction fan, dabbling in contemporary romance. You may be a sci-fi enthusiast. Still, isn’t it wonderful that there is the online world of book lovers out there, where we are able to discover kindred spirits and form virtual book clubs or enjoy simple discussions?

Those of us who are passionate about books sometimes seem a little odd to the rest of society; but, oh well. We’ll enjoy our imaginary getaways anyhow.

The Green Veil ~ Prologue

1848

Pain seared Colette’s temples, neck, and shoulders. Behind her eyelids, everything blazed like a powder keg of dynamite going off inside her. Explosions roared and blasts glared — red, and now and then a streak of hot white. She stirred on the bed, and her satin dress rustled.

“Wear the dress, Lettie.”

She picked it up and held it before her in front of the oval mirror, noticing how the crimson sleeves would drop off her shoulders, and the bodice would all but reveal every inch of her form. The rest of the dress was cut to accentuate her womanliness, and the rustle of the fabric caressed her skin when it stirred.

“They all admire you. Tonight, I don’t want them to be able to take their eyes off you.”

“You would put me on such a display?”

A condescending laugh rippled out of him, and she pinched her eyes shut.

“A display? You want to help me succeed, don’t you?”

“It’s so degrading.”

“Degrading.” He didn’t shout the word, yet it seemed so. “You never want to please me.”

“I do.”

“No. If you wanted to please me, you would do these simple things I ask of you.”

“But–“

He stepped up behind her and slid his fingers over her shoulders.

“Vashti,” he whispered. He tipped his lips to her neck and nuzzled her skin. “My Vashti. Wear the dress.” His use of that name sliced into her. He caught her gaze in the mirror and entwined one multi-faceted ringlet around his finger, stroking it against the curve of her jaw. “And leave some of your hair down. Just enough to tickle you here… and here…”

His words echoed in time with the blood pulsing through the bruise on her cheek.

They all looked at her. There was no mistaking the hungry thoughts barely veiled in the eyes of the men as they regarded her. The women whispered behind fans and gloved hands, and she felt their rebuff.

Shame. Flooding her. Turning her cheeks crimson, which only seemed to attract more of their attention.

“Dance with the gentlemen, Lettie. It pleases me. That’s all I’m asking. Only dance.”

So she’d danced. But somehow, even that hadn’t pleased him. Somehow, she’d done something wrong.

Tears crept out from under her swollen eyelids, and her shoulders rocked with quiet sobs. How had she come to this place? What had happened to all the dreams she used to harbor?

God, how could I have been so wrong?

Images from another life, a life she’d lived a long, long time ago, hurtled through the blare of her thoughts — images of a small town with a street covered in pine dust, of a white house on a hill and a trip across the great lake into the shroud of forest where she’d first met her destiny.

A key turned in the lock of the door. Colette wished she could reclaim that other time from the foggy past. But now it was too late. She could never go there again.
Her body convulsed in a shudder as she willed her tears to cease. The door brushed open across the carpeted floor, and her husband treaded softly across the room.
