Lessons From My Heroes

The Song of the King’s Heart trilogy is about twin flames—a pair of lovers that were one in spirit but two in body; one male and one female. It’s fair then, that I learned from both Ankhmakis and his spiritual companion, Natasa. When it comes to their love, a few readers and reviewers have misunderstood her role as his spiritual companion as demeaning, akin to a concubine, and for those with a very modern, western mindset, I can understand that. I challenge readers with the idea that sex can be sacred, a sacrament within temple life. Sex magic, or Anit-Shadya as is named in the novels, is a meditative path, akin to Tantric practices. Practitioners in both claim that by paying attention to your energy, your life force, while making love, you can transform your soul and your body. It is a practice that takes discipline, training, and unconditional love.

This then, is what grants Natasa and Ankhmakis their power, and through their love they are able to face the challenges of their world. Natasa’s understanding of the All-One and unity of life, steeped in her religion and faith, is one that changed me. After authoring these novels, I’ve come to see all of life as alive and all beings, whether tree, bird, flower, or mouse, as part of the same web of life as humanity. Natasa transcends to the highest mysteries before falling into great darkness, only to find highest self in the thick of it all. On the other hand, Ankhmakis has taught me about the way of the warrior, the focus needed to fight a battle, both on the field and within his court. Politics is a tricky thing and being worthy of both the army’s and priest’s loyalties is something I don’t think I could ever accomplish. But this is what a ruler’s life is about—a constant dance between one moving body and the next. His love for Natasa is the only thing he has chosen in his life, everything else is duty. Through him, I now see how a balance between love and duty is needed. This is a delicate quest, how does one make sure the activities of life don’t take over to the point that we lose the ones we love?

Learning from my characters is one of my favorite parts of writing. Before I start a new novel, I have an idea of the plot and who is in it, but soon the story takes over and suddenly I’m sucked into a world where my characters are in control, showing me the way with each word I write. Even during the editing phase, they change me and teach me to go beyond myself, to something that only my imagination can soothe. In the end, Natasa and Ankhmakis have taught me that while life can be brutal, love is what lasts for eternity.

Driven apart by hatred, greed, and tragedy, the golden pair Prince Ankhmakis and the Priestess Natasa are now forced to face the darkness of their fates alone.

After a brutal betrayal from within Ankhmakis’s own family, the distraught prince seizes the throne and is crowned Pharaoh Ankhwehenfer, while Natasa is forced to flee across the sea to a new land, with a new magic. Broken and truly alone for the first time since their bonding, their grief threatens to swallow them whole.

A stalemate is proposed, and as Egypt becomes two nations as in the days of old, a prosperous peace falls over the south. The prophecy has been shattered by the Golden Child’s death, yet the royals and their subjects find a way to survive and create an Upper Egypt greater than Ptolemy’s northern rule. Alliances with Nubia and Kush bring the promise of hope on the horizon. The next generation comes of age, and the old one passes on their knowledge so that the sins of the past won’t be repeated in their future.

But evil lurks still. There are those both within the Pharaoh’s court and without that would do anything to see the king fall. Ankhwenefer must confront the pain of the past in order to preserve the future for his sons, or his civilization will end.

The crowd cheered. Their screams were like the howls of furious wildcats. Their nationalism was at its peak, and all he needed to do was stoke it to earn their fealty. He turned to the high priest, who held the crown over his head. The white columns of the temple soared above them, and Ankhwenefer gazed at the hieroglyph-covered walls. In spite of the war, the temple was in pristine condition. All around him were golden statues of gods and goddesses. Animals and other brightly painted forms graced the walls. His flag bearing the phoenix flew high in the wind. Everyone in the room dropped to their knees as their king approached Setep.

“By the power invested in me,” the priest called out, “on this day, the fourth month of Perit, the eleventh day, in the third year of your holy reign, I re-crown you Lord and Pharaoh Ankhwenefer, the Good Being of Isis, Golden Eagle King, protector of our lands and Horus himself. May Amon-Re protect you and our people as we rebuild our nation. Egypt shall reign in glory until the end of time.”

Setep placed the heavy crown on Ankhwenefer’s head. A second priest handed him the hook and flail. He gripped them tightly as he crossed his chest with his arms and, turning to the crowd once more, gazed down upon them.

“My people,” he called, “I pledge myself to you.”

The sun poured in from the windows and shone upon Pharaoh’s face, and the people rose from the floor and clapped. To those in the room, their new king looked like the statues of Horus himself. Ankhwenefer was master of his domain—young, strong, intelligent, and wise. He’d fought hard for many years and won. The priestesses sang as he walked past and out to the courtyard where the commoners flooded the area, crying and tossing palm branches and lotus flowers at his feet. His entourage followed behind him, leading a procession of dancing, music, and singing, toward the palace where a feast awaited them. Tomorrow, the next phase of his reign would begin—creating peace with the Lower Kingdom, rebuilding the cities destroyed by the war, and most importantly, establishing a court in Thebes, with his sons, and Natasa, at his side.

Why I Chose to Write Romance

When people learn that I’m an author who writes romance novels, they then often ask why did I choose to write in the romance genre? Why not pen mysteries, suspense, or legal thrillers? Some even think that romance books aren’t serious works of fiction. But then, what qualifies as serious fiction?

All fiction, no matter the genre, is comprised of characters who must overcome both internal and external conflicts within a plot set against a fascinating backdrop. So, whether a book focuses on a high-profile trial, tracks a serial killer, or shows two people conquering their personal past demons to find love, we still have a story that’s emotionally engaging and deals with some form of life issue or reality.

So, in that sense, all great, well written fiction shows character growth and development through a problem solved.

I’ve been a voracious reader my entire life. I used to participate in the summer reading program at my local library where I always surpassed the required number of books to read. Today, I enjoy many different genres and count writers like John Grisham, David Baldacci, Nicholas Sparks, Susan Elizabeth Phillips, and James Patterson among my favorites.

So, that comes back to me and why I chose to write romances. Love. That simple four letter word that packs a ton of drama as the chemistry between the heroine and hero sets the tone for the entire book. Their relationship struggles and quest for love are what draws the reader into the story and keeps them hooked to the very end.

Love is eternal and universal. Whether you’re the hard-nosed detective or the cynical lawyer to everyone in between, most people long for love and family in their life. So, when I write about love, I’m writing about something we all want and cherish. It is a desire that unites us all.

In particular, I love writing stories where it’s love at first sight for my heroine and hero. In fact, in my first published novel, a holiday comedy, entitled: “Christmas Cookies on a Cruise Ship,” my characters do just that.

This book is especially close to my heart as my husband and I met on a Hawaiian cruise, and it was love at first sight for us. And that’s the primary reason why I love this meeting type so much—because I truly believe that love at first sight is real and does happen.

Once my heroine and hero acknowledge their love early in the story, which they often only recognize as simple physical attraction, then the fun comes when I place those internal and external obstacles in their way. I create these hurdles to be both realistic and believable and that fit into the framework of my overall plot. Because, to me, the best romance novels are those that are plausible and inspire real hope that true love does exist and can happen to them.

On a Caribbean cruise, a platter full of cookies, and a shot of Christmas magic yields a perfect pairing.

Chemist and budding romance writer Olivia Chasen is on a cruise to avoid spending Christmas with her beautiful twin sister and new fiancé—Olivia’s ex. Now, thanks to her lonely, intoxicated ramblings on Santa’s lap, her fellow passengers think she’s in love with a fictional character.

Former Navy SEAL Commander Jace Morse has dealt with plenty of unusual situations in his career, but he’s never had the honor, the pleasure, or the privilege of being a beautiful and intelligent woman’s fantasy hero come to life. While he hasn’t officially met the sexy chemist, he’s sure eager to explore the chemistry that’s sizzling between them.

Bringing the charming SEAL together with the skeptical Olivia is going to take more than just Christmas cookies and a little help from Mrs. Claus; it’s gonna take a heaping dose of Christmas magic.

“What is it, sweetheart?” His eyes burned with love and desire, and she wanted to cry and dance at the same time.

Instead, she did the most un-Olivia thing—she grabbed his head and yanked his mouth down onto hers!

Cheers and catcalls erupted from the small assembly, and she distantly heard people chanting her name. Somewhere, she thought she heard someone shout, You Go, Girl, but she wasn’t sure. She was only into kissing Jace!

Rose Kaplan and her sidekick Ida are at it again. It’s the holiday of Purim, and almost everyone at the Julius and Rebecca Cohen Home for Jewish Seniors is in costume for the Purim play. All except one, who will instead have to be fitted for a shroud. Once again, “Mrs. K” and Ida are called upon to solve the puzzle of a mysterious death at the Home. Described by Chanticleer Book Reviews as “at times more Lucy and Ethel than Holmes and Watson, with a soupcon of Miss Jane Marple,” these geriatric amateur sleuths will keep you laughing, guessing, and maybe even learning a bissel Yiddish!

Retirement is anything but restful for these folks.

Rose and Ida were both unapologetically fascinated with the lives of those around them. They were the sort of characters who could be quickly counted on to know all sorts of tidbits of information about their neighbors like who might be sick or planning to do something unusual in the near future. I found a great deal of amusement in seeing how these two women gathered their information and what they did with it.

It would have been nice to have a little more time developing the mystery. As much as I enjoyed seeing the characters banter with each other, sometimes these scenes did overshadow their attempts to solve the murder. If a few more clues had been shared and the plot had pushed forward faster, I would have felt comfortable giving this a full five-star review.

I loved the narrator’s sense of humor. Ida had a firm understanding of what she wanted out of life and was certain she knew the right way to go about seeking it out. When things didn’t turn out how she thought they would, her reactions to those moments often made me chuckle. She had a quick wit and wasn’t afraid to show it off.

This is part of a series, but it can be read as a standalone work.

Oy Vey, Maria!, a Mrs. Kaplan Mystery was a lighthearted read.

When her aunt suffers a stroke, New York portrait artist Emory Austen returns home to the North Carolina mountains to mend fences and deal with the guilt over her husband’s senseless death. But that won’t be as easy as she hoped.

Someone in the quirky little town doesn’t like Emory. Is it the sexy architect who needs the Austen land to redeem himself? The untrustworthy matriarch? The grudge-bearing local bad boy? Or the teenage bombshell who has raised snooping to an art form? Even the local evangelist has something to hide. Who wrote the cryptic note warning her to “Give it back or you’ll be dead? And what is ‘it’? As the clues pile up and secrets are exposed, Emory must discover what her family has that someone would kill for.

Such an enjoyable book. The kind you can’t put down. The kind that is so good you’re mad when it’s time to do any chore whatsoever. This wasn’t your everyday romantic suspense. It was full of suspense and yet only hinted at romance. My favorite kind of romance story. It also wasn’t the “trick the little old auntie out of her property” book. There were many pieces to the story, and this is what kept me glued to the pages.

This is an author who can make her characters real. I could picture everyone. A sweet helpful old woman in a nursing home, a bratty eighteen-year-old female, another totally grown up but still very bratty female, a widow, and of course a handsome man. A handsome man who seems good and trustworthy, yet a great deal of people in town hate fiercely. There were many other characters that added to this story and yet there was never a moment I had to turn back a page or two to see just exactly who someone was.

There is so much going on in this book. So many underlying subplots. But just like the author’s characters, the subplots seem to add to the story rather than confuse it. It is difficult to write a plot so intricate and yet keep it as clear as this story is.

I intend to see what else Rebecca Lee Smith has written, but I also hope she is currently writing more good stories like this one.

The door opened and Callie ventured into the hotel room. “Hi.”

“Hi.” Sparks shot through Levon. Every time he laid eyes on her, he thought of the good times he’d shared with her and the way they came together to make love. She blew his mind like no other. She’d been in his visions, too.

“I heard you’re going to take a ten-day sabbatical. Do I need to set up anything for you? Or is this one of your trips where you drop off the face of the earth for a while?” she asked. She laced her fingers together and stared at him.

He craved her. From her deep brown hair to her toes, he wanted this woman. When she appraised him with her dark-eyed stare, he wanted to confess everything. He imagined the taste of her lips, the way she whimpered when they touched and the vision of her beneath him as they made love. She had curves in all the right places, that smile and just thinking about her touch sent shivers down his spine. He loved when she tucked against him as she slept—when they shared a bed—and her ability to give him a no-nonsense answer when they discussed music.

Rosefield has moose, a ski resort, and new this season, murder. Come for a visit. Bring your buds.

Looking for an alpine vacation? Or do you long for the rural life where cows number greater than folks? Nestled amongst the Green Mountains of northern Vermont, Rosefield is the perfect setting to escape your problems and enjoy a cozy mystery. Within these borders, you’ll encounter over a hundred color illustrations to enhance your respite.

Maybe you’ll meet one of the locals. You might share a chair with Joey Rogers, skier extraordinaire and self-proclaimed hero of this small town. Or spot Happy Smith slicing through the glades on his snowboard-as long as it isn’t Grandma Day. Enjoy an après ski at the Bent Pole, and you’ll receive impeccable service from the best bartender in town, Jane Reech. And who knows? Maybe you’ll help Sheriff Peggy McStoots figure out whodunit.

You might even meet Rodney Buric II, the man responsible for the resort’s latest rebrand. Because who wants a mountain without an extra thrill? Sure, you’ve been to resorts with their fancy villages and high-speed quads. But have you ever experienced a . . . Murder Mountain?

A somewhat quirky murder mystery with a ski resort and town for it’s setting. This is as humorous as it is a good mystery. It has your small town cop (a lady this time, I might add) as well as some very funny and unconventional characters. Then again, I grew up in a small town and we had our share of eccentric characters too, so maybe that’s not so odd . What is odd though is naming a ski resort Murder Mountain to try and raise its popularity. And boy does it. All of that leads to a funny story full of illustrations that add to it greatly. In fact, the illustrations seem to break up your reading in two perfect places. At certain times when the illustration gives you an entire mental and physical picture making the story even more poignant and also, right when it was time to take a breath and move on to the next chapter. Even if it seems odd for a cozy mystery to have illustrations, these seem to only enhance the story.

If you like small town mysteries, quirky characters, and a fast read, this is for you. Murder Mountain is Book 1 in a series titled “Rosefield”. According to the author, Book 2 titled “Day Trip to Jay Peak” is in the works.

When Stick rescues Stone from a prickly situation with a Pinecone, a friendship is born. But when Stick gets stuck, can Stone return the favor?

With simple rhyming text, subtle messages of kindness and compassion, and Tom Lichtenheld’s signature charm, this delightful story about making and helping friends will enchant readers young and old because it’s never too early—or too late—to stick up for your friends.

Everyone needs at least one good friend!

Some of my favorite scenes were the ones that showed how Stick and Stone looked out for each other. Whether they were dealing with a bully or a thunderstorm, they always did their best to make sure their buddy was happy and safe. The fact that these moments were written in such plainspoken language only made them even better. There’s definitely something to be said for keeping things easy to understand for such a young audience.

It would have been helpful to have more plot development in this picture book. Even though it was written with toddlers and preschoolers in mind, I still think the author could have developed the storyline a little more deeply than she did. There were several opportunities to expand on points she made about what it means to be a good friend that would have made this an even better experience for small children as well as for the adults in their lives who read to them.

I loved seeing what this tale had to say about what it takes to be a good friend. No one is ever too young to start thinking about this concept, especially when it’s broken down to simple things that can be done at home with siblings or at daycare with other young children. The plot itself was pretty clear on the issue, but there was also plenty of room for discussion about why Stick and Stone were such good friends for little readers who might want to talk about it more.

Stick and Stone was a wholesome and heartwarming read.

Now it’s October, and the vacation island paradise is celebrating the season with an island-wide Fall Festival. Family obligation demands he participate. Everyone will be there, including the ghost that haunts his grandparents’ B&B.

The running joke that Kyle never sticks with anything—not a career or a woman—will continue to plague him. Unless he brings a knockout of a date to the weekend-long event. Cassandra Corwin fits the bill perfectly. Kyle’s had his eye on his brilliant, beautiful coworker since day one. But Cassie is an enigma, a loner. There’s no room in her life for anyone except Odin, her goofball of a Great Dane.

Will this woman of mystery agree to Kyle’s scheme to impress his family? Can two near strangers from opposite worlds survive family gatherings and back-to-back Halloween events while pretending to be a couple? Kyle’s father seems hell-bent on derailing everything before they even shout “Boo!”

Or will the island’s magic prove too powerful for them to resist?

Cassie snatched up her purse from the coffee table and dug through it until she found his business card. Her fingertip slid over the expensive linen-like cardstock, his name and title embossed in slate blue. Kyle S. Worthington, Senior Sales Representative. Even his card screams class and old money. The polar opposite of who she was and where she came from.

The other night at the restaurant, Kyle had been the only one wearing a two-hundred-dollar shirt, starched and meticulously ironed. With cufflinks. Okay…so he’d ditched the tie, but no doubt, it too likely cost more than she spent on groceries in a week.

Dare I consider his offer to visit Last Chance Beach? Odin whined and tipped his regal-looking head.

“What are you suggesting, big guy? You don’t even know the man. He’s not like anyone I’ve ever met. Certainly not like anyone I’ve ever…dated.”

Cassie scowled when the dog continued to stare as if judging her. Was it necessarily a bad thing that Kyle S. Worthington was different from any of her exes?
