The Background of Who’s Your Daddy?

Thanks Long and Short Reviews for having us on the blog today! You asked for a bit of background on our anthology, Who’s Your Daddy and we’re happy to provide it. The three stories are linked by a common theme – DNA results. Sometimes when you take a DNA test you find out strange, wonderful and surprising things. Sometimes, you discover a new relative. Sometimes you open old secrets and have to face the challenges those secrets bring. In other cases, the things you find out can bring danger knocking at your door.

The three authors featured in this anthology are all good friends. Jeanne Adams, Caren Crane and Nancy Northcott met when they were all finalists in the Romance Writers of America Golden Heart contest in 2006. Fourteen years and a blog later, over a drink, they got the idea for this anthology. Jeanne is an avid amateur genealogist, so her story reflects that interest. Nancy’s story follows characters from her Arachnid Spy series and Caren’s story brings in characters from her Cross Springs novels.

While each story is unique, the anthology ties together in the framework of getting unexpected results from a DNA test. In the case of Lost In Time, the information proves to be life-threatening. Derek Millington is cleaning out his late grandmother’s attic when he discovers that his long-deceased grandfather wasn’t his biological relative. Since no one still alive will be distressed by his search, Derek enlists the assistance of a professional genealogist to help him discover his real roots. Before too long, however, someone tries to kill Derek, and that person doesn’t seem to care that he nearly killed the genealogist, Alexis, too. As Alexis and Derek sift through the clues of his grandmother’s past, the attacks intensify and the police finally take it seriously. For Derek, falling hard for Alexis, it’s vitally important to find out the truth before anyone gets hurt, or worse.

With each tale of a wild DNA reveal, the stakes are high. We hope that your readers will enjoy the fun, interesting and suspenseful tales in Who’s Your Daddy And, if you like these stories, be sure to check out www.NancyNorthcott.com for more tales from the spies of the Arachnid Agency. Visit www.CarenCrane.com to find more delightful stories of small town life in Cross Springs, North Carolina. While Lost In Time isn’t connected to any of Jeanne Adams’s Urban Fantasy or paranormal romance series, it’s in the tradition of her romantic suspense tales. You can find all about her work at www.JeanneAdams.com. All three authors are on social media as well, so we hope you’ll say hi and let us know if you liked the stories!

Presenting three tales of secrets revealed and histories uncovered by DNA testing.

Arachne opened the file on his desk. “You’ve led takedowns on four major drug rings and six sets of human traffickers in the last twenty-one months. In all that time, you’ve taken five days off. You need a break.”

“It was a long day, with a couple of badly messed-up kids in it,” Dix replied. “That guy pushed a button that wouldn’t have mattered on a better day.”

Maybe. He hoped.

“You don’t look like you’re sleeping well, per the medical staff, and your colleagues have noticed you’re on edge a lot.”

“They’re mistaken,” Dix snapped.

Arachne raised one eyebrow.

Shit. Of course he wasn’t sleeping well, not with dead and mutilated and traumatized kids walking in his dreams. Who would sleep with that going on?

Arachne continued, “There’s a reason we provide paid vacation. You have almost three years’ worth accrued.”

“I don’t need a break, sir.” Only the press of work kept the dreams at bay. But he had to offer a compromise or find himself benched—for a long time, judging by the boss’s expression. “Yeah, what those kids went through bothers me. It bothers us all. Goes with the job. A couple of days off, a chance to do some reading, maybe go to a museum, and I’ll be fine.”

“We’re past that, and medical concurs. I’m benching you, Agent Dixon. For a month.”

A month? Panic clawed at his throat. An entire month with nothing to fend off the images that haunted him day and night?

Caren Crane began writing warm, witty contemporary romance and women’s fiction to save herself from the drudgery of life in the office. An electrical engineer by training, she longed to create worlds where things were any color except cube-wall gray. She still works in a cubicle, but gets to hang out with witty, fabulous people whenever she’s writing, which greatly encourages butt-in-chair time.

Caren lives in North Carolina with her wonderful husband and semi-feral rescue cat. She has three fiercely intelligent, gorgeous grown children, having neatly side-stepped her mother’s threat that she would have children Just Like Her.

Jessica O’Neill was the toast of London society—a stunning actress who had appeared from nowhere to take the stage by storm. But not even her most ardent admirers suspected how brilliant an actress she was.

Nothing that Jessica said or did betrayed her true identity as a high-born young lady risking her good name in a desperate gamble to save her family from total ruin. And when the dashing, handsome, immensely wealthy Earl of Linton made Jessica an offer that was simply impossible to reject, there was no way she could turn back on her dangerous path.

Jessica O’Neill had to play the part of a wealth-hunting wanton to the hilt—but one thing was not in her script. Falling in love…

I enjoy reading stories about a woman thwarting the yoke of societal expectations by doing the unthinkable in order to survive, and winning. There is a cost to that course of action which is the conflict that propels this well-told story along.

The start of the story introduced me to the heroine, her dilemma, the ultimatum and the reason she chose the course she did. At first, I thought I knew who the hero was going to be, but I was quickly corrected.

I’m glad because I much prefer who it turned out to be, Philip, Lord Linton. He’s not quite what I expected though and I’m happy about that too. He started out expecting a mistress and he discovered something much more amazing, but it unnerved him. He was feeling so good he went with it, didn’t question much and he was an ideal hero in how he treated Jessica. Be warned, the hero may not say much but he is listening to Jessica, watching and gathering clues. His attention to detail is what makes a difference in the end.

There are some wonderful moments of kissing, longing looks and tender moments but as soon as the tension heats to the point of culmination, the door abruptly closes and I was left with the impression of a done deal without the show. It was quite refreshing. I was left dealing with their emotions and impressions, feelings and internal dialogue. I enjoyed every moment.

Philip’s family and friends were doing all the worrying for him. They gossiped, plotted and planned, all in the name of familial love and devotion. They all meant well but the results were, as anticipated, disastrous. How the author described both characters in the aftermath of their separation broke my heart.

The final clue was innocently dropped into place and Philip wasted no time in taking up the challenge. I absolutely adored how the hero was dedicated to finding her and was willing to do whatever he could to woo and win Jessica. This was when his family had a chance to right the wrong visited upon their relationship and I was cheering for their success. Philip’s sister was like a one-woman calvary.

There are more intriguing plot points that rounded out this story nicely but I’m not gong to say anymore. There is some emotional drama, an attempted kidnapping and some wonderful Shakespearian moments that enhanced my reading enjoyment. All in all, His Lordship’s Mistress is a wonderful romance story that is pleasing, entertaining and made me feel happy at the end. All good points to recommend this story to other romance fans.

Duty. Desire. Destiny.

How far would you go to be safe… to be free…to be loved?

Iskra doesn’t question the rules. The rules are there to keep her safe from those who are deemed unsafe or unfair. Anyone who breaks the rules is taken, never to be heard from again. But that’s the price everyone gladly pays for peace and safety. And no one wants to live like the Riskers–barbarians who reject order and justice, and could kill or be killed at any moment.

When a friend is taken because of Iskra, the guilt forces her to do the unthinkable: seek out the Riskers. Iskra’s quest to save her friend quickly entangles her fate with a cryptic prophecy and a young Risker named Xico, who ensnares her heart and is willing to put it all on the line to win her.

With every risk Iskra takes, the closer she gets to true freedom. But every choice carries a consequence. The choices she makes set events she never imagined into motion, and the price of her freedom could very well be her life and the life of the man she loves.

Devastatingly beautiful from start to finish, Flight of the Spark left me completely enthralled and praying to the sky-god that my predictions for the sequel would come true! I find that my heart actually feels like breaking knowing that at least for now the story is over and that I will have to wait to find out the fate of these wonderful characters.

Iskra fights with everything she has, risking it all for the truth about her society where injustices keep her questioning what is safe, and what is just there to keep her controlled. The exponential growth we experience with Iskra as she battles her way through her story grips us at our very core and pulls us along with her through order, rebellion, and through a beautiful bond she shares with her forbidden love.

Xico, the fearless, charming, and patient boy of practically a different world from Iskra, guides us along in learning that fears that have been faced can become strengths. He never gives in, and brings color to Iskra’s world of mandated gray.

I am in awe. Truly, I am emotional and delighted that I could fall so easily into a book like this again. All the nostalgia of falling for a dystopian series, gripping the edge of my seat while the turning pages grip the edge of my heart, having me question if any of us, (me and the characters), are going to make it out unscathed from the story that Evelyn Puerto has brought us.

Though Flight of the Spark was written for a teen audience, it brought with it so many important lessons that especially in today’s world would be so immeasurably important for audiences of all ages. It took me away to a different world, but saddled itself up parallel to the one we live in now, helping me find perspective in these unsure times.

Don’t pass up the opportunity to enter the world that Evelyn Puerto has so passionately created for us. Flight of the Spark will fill you with a magic you may have thought disappeared a long time ago. I can’t wait for the sequel.

For the last six or so summers, my two sisters and I have held an ice-cream competition that has now become an expected part of summer barbecues at my house. We each make a homemade ice-cream or frozen dessert and the guests select the winner. While it’s fun, we’re seriously competitive about our entries, going all out on presentation and finding ways to keep our flavors secret until the big reveal. One year, my younger sister made matching T-shirts for her and her young daughters. Another year she wore a hula skirt to match the tropical theme. There’s even a trophy that a cousin-in-law surprised us with one year.

Never a big fan of dairy, sorbets are what I like making best. The only year I won the competition, I made a strawberry and mango terrine with a hint of ginger in the mango. The flavors blended well together and on the plate the tropical colors stood out. Another favorite is plum sorbet.

Here’s the recipe for my winning entry, both from Serious Eats. I love cooking with ginger so I added a bit when pureeing the mango. To make the terrine, line your loaf pan with plastic wrap, then put a piece of parchment paper into pan, letting sides overhang the edges. Spread one layer of sorbet and smooth the top. Freeze until semi-frozen, about 20 minutes, and spread a layer of the second sorbet on top. If you still have a room a third layer.

Mango Sorbet
Ingredients
2 pounds ripe mangoes, peeled and diced, 4 1/2 to 5 cups
1/4 cup water
3/4 cup sugar
1 teaspoon lime juice, more or less to taste
1/2 teaspoon kosher salt, more or less to taste

Directions

Pack diced mangoes in blender with water and blend on high speed until very smooth, about 30 seconds. Pour through a fine-mesh strainer into a large measuring cup, pushing purée through strainer with a spoon, until you have 3 cups of purée. Reserve remainder for another use.

Transfer strained purée into a large bowl and whisk in sugar until well dissolved. Whisk in lime juice and salt in small increments, adding more to taste.

A Cowboy State of Mind by Jennie Marts

Long and Short Reviews welcomes Jennie Marts who is celebrating the upcoming release of the first book in her Creedence Horse Rescue series, A Cowboy State of Mind. Enter to 1 of 2 sets of the Cowboys of Creedence series.

The town of Creedence, Colorado, gets involved in horse rescue in bestseller Jennie Marts’ brilliant new series

Zane Taylor has a gift for communicating with animals, particularly horses, but he’s at a loss when it comes to women. He’s a scarred and battered loner who has sworn off love—except he can’t seem to stay away from Bryn Callahan.

Bryn Callahan has a heart for strays, as evidenced by the assembly of abandoned animals that have found their way to her doorstep. But she is through trying to save damaged men. She vows to date only nice guys, which is a category that does not include Zane Taylor. Too bad he’s the one who sets her pulse racing every time she’s around him.

A chance encounter with a horse headed for slaughter brings Zane and Bryn together. Although starting a horse rescue ranch wasn’t in the plan, now Zane and Bryn have a chance to save not just the animals, but maybe each other…

The still-nameless dog jumped into the cab as Zane Taylor opened the door of his pickup, and he absently patted its head and rubbed behind its ears. The dog leaned into him and got that blissed-out look on its face, and Zane’s tension eased a little as it always did when he interacted with an animal. The late spring sun warmed Zane’s back, and as soon as he turned his attention away from the dog, he felt the weight of the decision he bore on his shoulders. His former boss, Maggie, had been nagging him to come back to his old job on her Montana ranch. She’d taken in a herd of wild stallions, and she needed him. He’d gotten by so far with vague replies, but it was time to give her an answer. Time to get back on the road and out of Creedence. Except the reason he was so fired up to leave was also the reason he wasn’t ready to walk away.

He shrugged the soreness from his shoulders. He’d had a good morning with Rebel, the headstrong black stallion he’d been working with for weeks now. Maybe the horse could feel the warmth in the air as well. Although it was Colorado, so they could still get a snowstorm or two before spring reluctantly slid into summer.

“Nice job today, horse whisperer,” Logan Rivers, his current boss, and friend, hollered from the corral where he was putting another horse through the paces.

Zane waved a hand in his direction, ignoring the comment, as he turned the engine over and pulled the door shut. He wasn’t fond of the nickname, even though Logan had been using it since they were in high school and working summers at Logan’s family’s ranch.

Zane could admit grudgingly that he did have a gift with horses, especially the dangerous or wild ones, somehow connecting with the animals better than he ever did with people.

The black-and-white border collie mix rested her head on Zane’s leg, and he stroked her neck as he drove toward Creedence, where no one was a stranger and everyone knew not just your business, but your cousin’s as well.

He lowered the windows and turned on the radio, contemplating the errands he needed to run after he grabbed a plate of biscuits and gravy at the diner. The thought made his mouth water. So did the thought of hopefully seeing a certain blond waitress who had been taking up way too many of his thoughts these last few months.

He slowed, his brow furrowing, as he recognized that same waitress’s car sitting empty on the side of the road. The car was an old nondescript blue sedan, but there was no mistaking the colorful bumper stickers stuck to the trunk. A bright blue one read “What if the hokey-pokey really is what it’s all about?” and the hot-pink one above the back taillight read “It was me. I let the dogs out.”

His heart rate quickened as his gaze went from the empty vehicle to a hundred yards up the road, where a woman walked along the side of the highway, her ponytail bouncing with each step and a light-colored dog keeping pace at her heels. Which was pretty impressive, in and of itself, since the dog had only three legs.

But then, everything about Bryn Callahan was kind of bouncy, and she was just as impressive as her dog. The woman was always upbeat and positive. Even now, with her car sitting busted on the side of the road, her steps still seemed to spring, and the bright sunlight glinted off her blond hair.

He drove past the abandoned car and onto the dirt shoulder as he slowed to a stop beside her. “Need a ride?”

She turned, her expression wary, then her face broke into a grin, and it was like the sun shining through the clouds after a rainstorm.

“Hey, Zane,” she said, the smile reaching all the way into her voice as she grasped the door handle. She looked steadily into his eyes, her gaze never wavering, never sliding sideways to stare at the three-inch, jagged scar starting at the corner of his eye and slicing down his cheek. Most people couldn’t keep their eyes off it, but Bryn acted as if it wasn’t there at all. “I sure do. I was supposed to start my shift at the diner ten minutes ago.”

She opened the door, and the dog bounded in, hitting the floorboards, then springing onto the seat to wiggle and sniff noses with the border collie. They could have powered a wind farm, the way their tails were wagging and their little butts were shaking.

“Hey, Lucky.” He leaned in as the dog leapt over the collie’s back and into Zane’s lap, where it proceeded to drench his face in fevered licks and puppy kisses. Lucky was like a hyper three-legged Tigger as he bounced from Zane’s lap back to the collie, over to Bryn, and back to Zane.
“Lucky, get off him,” Bryn scolded. She tried to push her way into the truck as she got her own slobbery reception from the collie.

Zane chuckled and grabbed her hand to help her into the cab. But his laugh stuck in his throat as heat shot down his spine and his mouth went dry. He swallowed and tried to focus on assisting her, instead of staring at the area of bare skin he glimpsed as the top of her dress buckled and gaped from her movement. It was just the side of her neck, but it was the exact spot he’d spent too much time thinking about kissing.

“Silly mutts.” She laughed as she tossed her backpack on the floor and plopped into the seat. Her hand was soft, but her grip was solid, and for a moment, he wondered what would happen if he didn’t let go. “Wow, what a greeting,” she said, as she released his hand to buckle herself in.
Zane’s eyes were drawn to her legs like bees to honey. The woman had great legs, already tan, and muscular and shapely from her work at the diner. Her white cross-trainers were scuffed with the red dirt from the road, and she had a smudge of dust across one ankle that Zane was severely tempted to reach down and brush away so he could let his fingers linger on her skin.

Bryn wore a pink waitress dress, the kind that zips up the front, with a white collar and a little breast pocket, and the fabric hugged her curvy figure in all the right spots. For just a moment, Zane imagined pulling down that zipper—with his teeth. His back started to sweat just thinking about it.

Simmer down, man. He took a deep breath, utilizing the stress-reducing exercise he’d learned in the military, and tried to think of something witty to say. He didn’t usually let himself get carried away with those kinds of fantasies. But he didn’t usually have Bryn in his truck, filling his cab with the sound of her easy laughter and the scent of her skin—traces of honeysuckle and vanilla and the smell of fresh sheets off the line on a warm summer day.

“That dog is serious about kissing. I haven’t had that much action in months.” He winked, then laughed with her, pulling his hand back to ruffle Lucky’s ears as the dog settled into the seat next to the collie. He tried to play it off like a joke, to settle his pounding heart, when what he really wanted to do was pull her into his lap and kiss her face and throat the way Lucky had done to him. Well, not exactly the same way.

Bryn snorted and scratched the ears of the collie, who was softly whining as she pressed into Bryn’s shoulder. “He’s just happy to see you. It’s been a while, ya know?”

“Yeah, I know.” It had, in fact, been months since he’d seen her.

“Well, Lucky has noticed you haven’t been around much.” She dropped her gaze and her voice as she focused on petting the dog. “We both have.”

Both?

“Are you saying you missed me?”

“I didn’t say missed. I said noticed.”

His shoulders slumped. Of course she hadn’t missed him.

She playfully nudged his elbow, and he felt the heat of her skin against his arm.

“Of course I missed you. You all but disappeared after the great Christmas pie bake-off in December.”

He chuckled as he shook his head. “I still can’t believe we made fifteen pies in four hours.”

“I still can’t believe you wore a frilly apron with a glittery cupcake on the front.”

He raised an eyebrow. “What other kind of cupcake is there? And I liked that glittery color. I’m thinking of having it added to the paint job on my truck.”

A laugh burst from her. “I dare you to.”

He let his voice drop and offered her what he hoped was a flirtatious grin. “I do enjoy a good dare.”

She chuckled, then lowered her gaze to the dog’s shoulder, where she scratched its fur. “So, why didn’t I hear from you? Was it something I said or did?”

Yeah, it was everything you did—everything that made me want and hope and wish for something more. “Nah. I was going to call you, but we got real busy at the ranch. Then I heard you started dating some rough-stock cowboy, and I didn’t want to overstep.”

“Is it overstepping to be my friend?”

He cocked his head, eyeing her. “Is that what you want me to be? Your friend?”

“Of course. I didn’t give you my number for you to not call me.”

Wrong question, dumbass. Should have asked her if all she wanted was to be his friend. He offered her a shrug. “I’m not much of a talker.”

“That’s perfect. Because I can talk up a blue streak, and I’m always on the lookout for a good listener.”

He chuckled. “I can do that. I can probably even throw in an occasional grunt of agreement just so you know I’m paying attention.”

She giggled softly, and the sound swirled in his chest, melting into him like molasses on a warm pancake. “That sounds great.”

Trevor is everyone’s favorite college goofball, excited to be a part of everything and anything and always looking to lend a helping hand, even when nobody asks for it. While reading The Right Move it was nice to have a sweet storyline about the budding relationship between Chase and Trevor while also working through the major conflicts of the plot in a very important and practical way. This is a fun and very sweet children’s story. The illustrations were brightly colourful and I enjoyed how they were consistent and really showed clearly the story graphically so smaller children should easily be able to follow along as the adult reads the words. I also liked how the story itself was written simply but still conveyed multiple items in a sentence. I feel this is a story that children will relate to and enjoy and can be a good tool for adults/parents to teach kids why it’s important that they take care of their possessions.

I feel the age range for this story is about right – kindergarten and prep for children to be read the story by adults and Grade 1 and Grade 2 level the children should be able to read it themselves, but I feel the strongest part is the lesson parents can explain to the children about how why taking responsibility and care of possessions and pets is important. I feel this story is strong because it’s clear and simple but has a critical lesson underpinning it.

Brightly colourful and with a simple but important message this is a great story and one I enjoyed.

A pet adoption leading to lasting love?

Kelly Haas thought he’d lost everything when his first dog, Sally, passed away. He wasn’t looking for a new pup, but couldn’t resist checking the local rescues. One look at Louie and Kelly knew he’d found the right dog—a happy bagle. When Kelly meets the man running the rescue, he realizes he’s smitten with Rob, too.

He knows how to get Rob, a perpetual loner, to come out of himself. He can be open with Kelly, but he leans on him hard when he hits a low time in his life.

Can these two find the love they deserve while raising four dogs, or are they destined to just be friends?

This is another fun novel in Megan’s Slayer’s Must Love Dogs series. I have read a few of them already. I adore the plots that are centered around dogs and the men who love them. We get to meet Kelly Haas, a man who can’t live without a dog and after losing his last one is searching for a new companion to enliven his rather boring life. Fate steps in when he finds a website for a Basset Hound rescue group. It’s incredibly sweet watching him fall in love with a one-eyed male named Louie.

Now Louie is going to bring his new human to the man who rescued him, Rob McMann. Their first meeting was electric and both men felt the attraction immediately. Rob is a man who puts dogs first and everything else in the background. His life was a hard one, his whole family refusing to accept the fact that he is gay. The only thing that keeps his depression away is rescuing dogs and watching them find a loving family. My heart ached for him because he lives a cold existence outside of the animals, foster animals and his own. He doesn’t have much of a support network and although his father had left when he was young, his mother forced him to be the stable man. He wasn’t able to show any feelings, he had to be stoic at all times. I got a feel for that when he finds out his mother is dying, and he has to handle her affairs. The author does a great job of getting the reader into just how bad his childhood was as he received nothing from his mother’s will, all of it went to his sister. His sister is another example of how bigoted people can be towards those that are different. She just thinks he can flip a switch inside him and fall in love with a woman.

On the other hand, Kelly is having had a more stable home life, although he feels incredibly shy and awkward. A great example of this is him blurting out to Rob, “I wanted to say hi before now, but I didn’t. I’m not usually shy, but I’m not great at making a move.” I love his character because he is caring. Even though he doesn’t know Rob very well, he offered him all the support he could when he learned that his mother had died. Rob really needed that love and understanding so that he could finally let his guard down. Their love making is hot but sweet as well. I could just see the connection between them crackling every time they are in the same room. It helps that the dogs are them to help them feel like a family, a pack.

There are a few things that I would have like to see changed. I know this is a rather short story, but I think they jumped into bed far too quickly. I would have liked to see the relationship develop a little slower, to get to know them a little deeper. It’s also interesting just how fast Rob opened up to Kelly.

In the end, it’s a sweet story about two men and their rescue dogs that bring them together when they most need it. Each partner brings something that is desperately needed in their relationship. I’m a sucker for any story that involves dogs, and this warmed my heart. You can tell that the two of them have found their soul mates and the life in front of them is going to be much happier.

When the Villain is RIGHT!

It’s an odd concept, I know, but what if the villain of your story is right? Doing the wrong thing for the right reasons is a well-established bad guy trope, but sometimes writers surprise themselves by jumping into the getaway car and joining the search for a suitable place to dump the bodies!

The truth is, writers are every character of their books. Part of me here, part of me there, that’s a sui generis joy of writing. But in the Edger series, around the time I released book two, I realized where the final act of the story was headed, and knew I had no compelling position for the protagonist to take! The antagonist was poised to cure all of society’s woes. What could the protagonist possibly offer to compete with that?

The Edger series is a wacky superhero/spy comedy, but at its core it analyzes liberty versus control. The villain’s goal is to become the hive mind leader of the human race, mind-controlling everyone for all eternity. Which, I mean, is obviously bad, right? But what if I told you this hive mind leader wants world peace? What if the goal is to fix Washington, break us off fossil fuels, end poverty, and fix once and for all Shrek-faced Superman from Justice League? What if the writer infuses the villain with every noble goal he can think of?

The problem of proving the villain is wrong is a good problem to have. It means you’re doing something right as a writer. It also means you’ve got your work cut out for you. Writers must put as much effort into convincing readers of the side of good as they do for the side of eee-villl. Adding to this challenge was the fact that I was writing the series at a time when the world was (is?) apparently unraveling, which naturally predisposes a person to consider desperate solutions. Readers may find greater sympathy for my villain (particularly in book 3) than they expect simply because of the times they live in.

I wrote the Edger series because I wanted desperately to laugh and escape these problems. I wanted the literary equivalent of a tv action/comedy series, something with a little depth, and staunchly apolitical. As tempting as it was to pull back the curtain and reveal the villain is a republican or democrat, I resisted. The villain’s solution to our problems was a somewhat universal solution anyway. Just take control and fix it. But in searching for the “good” response to this position, what I discovered is that the real villain wasn’t a who, but a force. It is the motivating quality that drove the villain to take such drastic measures in the first place. That force is cynicism. It’s the belief we must be wicked to fight wickedness. We must hire wicked leaders because the job itself is wicked, and angels are no match for demons…

This was my lightbulb moment. Because while every good protagonist must act on the world around them, they are not actions—they are people with motivations and attributes. Sympathetic villains are delicious ingredients in our fiction, but we still need our heroes to guide us from our worst instincts. Once I understood the villain as a motivating force, the hero’s counterforce became clear.

Edger has a certain naiveté allowing him to see the best in people. He can dial down the noise, gather his friends close, and trust angels are still capable of defeating demons. A healthy naiveté is a powerful force, because it’s where courage comes from. One doesn’t storm Normandy beach expecting to live, after all, nor can one afford to be cynical about survival! Cynicism is a poisonous privilege, and a healthy naiveté is its ultimate antidote.

Edger spoiler alert: Edger’s healthy naiveté is the quality that ultimately saves the human race.

Buh… anyone in the Collective got any bright ideas?

Roaring voices deafen my ears. Billions of lights streak past. I stagger backwards. Too much! The processors in my suit narrow down possibilities. Billions become millions. Thousands become hundreds. Finally… one. Gravity triples in my limbs from the fatigue of thousands of pull-ups, flutter kicks, push-ups, and sit-ups done in a single day. I’m shivering. Can’t stop. It’s hell week in BUD/S training. In and out of the ocean. Swimming miles against the clock. Cold… so cold. You’re telling me, sir, Killmaster replies.

I slide onto the barstool to gather my thoughts.

You know, I’m not really much of a… sir.

Killmaster replies: You are today. Sir.
