R.L. Merrill’s Top Five Musicals – Guest Blog

Long and Short Reviews welcomes R.L. Merrill, who is celebrating today’s release of Hurricane Reese.

R.L. Merrill’s Top Five Musicals –
(In no particular order because playing favorites is no fair)
Hurricane Reese features a pop musician who becomes a Broadway smash with his first musical, Ruby in Red Plaid, and decides to take some time off with his beloved grandfather who played piano for Frank Sinatra in the 1960s. The musical Reese ends up writing details an important event in his grandfather’s life, which turns out to be a little different than Reese had been led to believe. I’ve always loved musicals and dancing, and while rock and metal music has featured prominently in all of my work so far, this book gave me the opportunity to explore my more theatrical side. I helped choreograph musicals in my first years of teaching, performed in a college production of Kiss Me, Kate, and worked with show choirs for years, so this part of the story was a lot of fun to write.

1. Hair

Hair has some of the best songs ever. I fell in love with the show in college when a date took me to see a performance in Des Moines. I bought the soundtrack, listened to it non-stop, and I still sing it all the time. I was such a hippie anyway at that time in my life, well in dress and in political/social leanings, it just appealed to me. Plus, I was all about my long blonde natural hair then, haha. Not anymore. I cut it off when I got pregnant 17 years ago and I’ve never looked back. Now it’s pink!

2. Silk Stockings

I was a dancer from age 3 to 17. Tap, jazz, and hula. I absolutely loved everything to do with dancing, and Cyd Charisse was my idol. Her and Cynthia Rhodes were everything. I wanted to dance like them, I wanted to be them for a long time. But Silk Stockings I love not only for the dancing, but also as a child of the Cold War era, I loved this lighthearted take on the Soviet conflict and how love could cross even the stodgiest of boundaries. And Fred Astaire. Come on…

3. Phantom of the Opera

My stepmother and grandmother took me to see Phantom in San Francisco when I was a teenager and I was blown away. Never had I gotten such chills from listening to song. I’ve always been a horror fan and one who loved the villain more than the hero quite often, and so I always rooted for the Phantom and longed for an alternate ending where Christine remains with the Music Of The Night…

Once

This brilliant story of a street musician and the flower-seller who becomes his muse was so sweet, but the music ripped my heart out. The film version with Glen Hansard in all of his ginger beauty singing his heart out and Marketa Irglova’s pure voice singing a plea to the man who left her… Oh, the feels.

5. Singin’ in the Rain

Gene Kelly. Need I say more? The master himself pokes fun at himself in this one while falling in love with the adorable Debbie Reynolds. The acrobatic Make em Laugh, the Cyd Charisse number, and “Moses supposes his toeses were roses, but Moses supposes erroneously…” I did a tap solo to Singin’ in the Rain as a kid that I’m told was pretty special, so yeah, it’s been a favorite for a long time.

Tony award-winning musician Reese Matheson’s life resembles a natural disaster, and caregiver Jude De La Torre is caught in the eye of the storm. Can the love these two opposites find together survive caring for an ornery octogenarian with wayward balls and a meddling family insistent upon tradition?

A public break-up is not what Reese expects upon returning from the successful run of his musical in London. All he wants to do is spend time with his beloved grandfather and musical mentor, who suffers from Alzheimer’s. Reese knows he doesn’t have much time left before the elder Matheson doesn’t remember him. In classic “Hurricane Reese” form, he moves into the cottage by the sea, displacing Jude, the intriguing caregiver he’d hired two years before. When Grandpa proves too much for Reese to handle on his own, Jude comes to his rescue, taming Grandpa… and the Hurricane as well. Soon all Reese can think about is how to get Jude out of his scrubs and into his bed. Permanently. Will Hurricane Reese destroy everything in its wake, or will this gay odd couple learn to harmonize together?

Top Ten Tuesday: Ten Books I Can’t Believe I Read

Hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl

Happy Tuesday!  This week is all about books I can’t believe I read.  For my list, I decided to pick books that are a departure from what I normally read, or that I read at a strange time in my life.

The Eyes of the Dragon by Stephen King-I don’t typically read horror, so I’d never read any of Stephen King’s books.  However, my husband is a big fan and was determined to find a Stephen King book I would read.  While it will never be a favorite, I have to admit I did enjoy it at the time.

Tuesdays with Morrie by Mitch Albom-I had to read this for a class in college.  I thought it was okay but not something I would consider reading on my own.

Great Expectations by Charles Dickens-I really love classics, so it wouldn’t be strange for me to pick something like this up today.  However, I read this book when I was a freshman in high school on my own for fun.  Most of my friends considered it strange reading material.  It has been years since I picked it up, so I’m not as clear on details as I’d like to be.  However, I did enjoy it immensely, and I’d like to revisit it.

Seinlanguage by Jerry Seinfeld-I enjoyed Seinfeld if I happened to catch it on tv, but it was never a favorite show.  I have no idea why I picked up this book.  I guess I was just looking for something fun to pass the time with?

Homicidal Psycho Jungle Cat: A Calvin and Hobbes Collection by Bill Watterson-I’d never read a collection of comic strips, and decided to pick this one up.  I loved it!

Interview with the Vampire by Anne Rice-I’ve read many vampire books, but when I first picked this up years ago, I’d never read anything remotely paranormal so it was quite a strange pick for me at the time.   I loved it and have been completely hooked on vampires ever since.

Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte-Again, I love classics, so this normally wouldn’t be a strange book for me.  However, I read this right after having my first child.  I was frazzled, new mom but I came across a copy of this in my local bookstore and decided to read it.  I loved it, but I can’t believe I picked it up at such a crazy time in my life.

Dragons Love Tacos by Adam Rubin-This is not a title I ever expected to see on my bookshelf, but I have two kids who thoroughly enjoy this story and the sequel, Dragons Love Tacos 2.  I highly recommend both.

I Need My Monster by Amanda Noll-Again, not something I ever pictured myself reading, but I can thank my kids for all the fun children’s books I get to read with them.  The sequel is great too.

Animal Farm by George Orwell-I read this in junior high.  I found it very thought provoking and definitely worth reading, but not something I would have read on my own.

Have you read any of these?  If so, what did you think?  What books would be on your list?

Mount, our favorite mountain man, is back for a third installment of action and adventure! It’s 1844 and Mount has returned to his secluded cabin nestled in the Rocky Mountains, bringing with him his new bride, Sandra, and stepson, Andy. The new family is happy beyond words, and just starting to build a wonderful future. Suddenly their lives are shattered, and that happy future in jeopardy, when Sandra is kidnapped by a ruthless band of outlaws, led by the notorious assassin, Li Zhang. The resulting adventure is packed full of excitement, danger and surprises, and of course, plenty of Mount’s special brand of humor.

“I don’t know what the hell my folks was drinkin’ the day they decided it was a good idea to name me Thaddeus Beauregard, but like I said, folks just call me Mount.”

When I read the line above I was sold on this book. I love a character with a sense of humor. If you are a fan of William Johnstone and his Mountain Man series you will love this book. Don’t misunderstand…this is not a copycat by any means but it has that wonderful old-fashioned pot likker kind of feel to it. I loved it but then I am a fan of the hunter-trapper, fair is fair, come sit by my fire and lean on your saddle, kind of novel.

This book is written in the narration or story-telling mode. Mount tells the story of life in the Rockies and the dangers of travel and of every day life. The dialect is very authentic of the times and of the man but not difficult to read or understand. There can be no question that Blumhagen is good at developing characters as well as creating great scene description. This is not a long book and I sure would have loved more to read. Not that I felt the story was unfinished, I just wanted more to read because it’s good.

This is the third book in the Mount series. It is well worth the time to read it and I’m going to try out books 1 & 2.

The McMillan twins, Robin and Bobby, are renowned for their talents—both as fine artists and for thrilling the various men who catch their eyes. As different in style and personality as their DNA is identical, they’re nonetheless best friends who divide and conquer, with Robin doing the serious painting and Bobby adding the sunny salesmanship.

But when their most important client decides Bobby must wield the paintbrush, the brothers revert to childhood tactics and switch places. Then along comes Micah, a handsome doctor who’s attracted to Bobby but invites Robin out to try to please his homophobic brother, and Paolo, the pain-in-the-butt client who thinks he’s wooing Bobby when he’s actually after Robin. Paolo harbors his own hidden pain that weirdly intersects with Robin’s, but pride and privacy conspire to produce what will either be a masterpiece—or end up as Dogs Playing Poker.

Robin and Bobby are known as Double Trouble, but all things must come to an end. The twins have fun but long for a happy ever after of their own. Bobby is the total opposite of Robin and when their latest and biggest client wants to dictate who will do the painting the men find themselves with a problem. The two soon find themselves in a sticky situation, pretending to be each other and finding that love could soon be lost to them. Meeting both Micah and Paolo turns the brothers’ world upside down. Both men are attractive but are they drawn to the right twin? Bobby and Robin must figure out if their newest job is worth the pain. Can they continue to pretend, and will it be worth it in the end?

Robin and Bobby may be twins, but they are total opposites. I loved both men, but Robin melted my heart. He seems to always take the brunt of everything and makes sure that Bobby is happy. Bobby could be too happy for me and at times seemed a bit naive. I loved seeing each twin find their way to a happy ending. Their adventure is full of emotions. It was nice to watch the relationships develop as their story progresses. Love blossoms while trust must be earned. It was nice to see that not only will Bobby and Robin always be there for each other, but their friends will as well. Micah and Paolo are strong characters and add a nice dimension to the story and I enjoyed seeing the four men not only interact as couples but with each other as well. Robin and Bobby learn that love comes to those that are willing to fight for it.

This is another great read in the Balls to the Walls series by Tara Lain. It moves along nicely, and the characters are full of depth and emotions. I was quickly drawn into their adventure and cannot wait to see what will happen next in this world.

DecemberCon 2017. John Perlan, aka YouTuber “SmileyNibor,” has come to the con for one reason and one reason only: to see his idol, actor Derek Kitow. It helps that he already has the beard and the bod to make a convincing Momoaman.

And what exactly does Kitow have in mind by inviting Perlan to meet him after the panel?

Although he won’t admit it to his two best friends, there’s really only one reason John is attending DecemberCon – and that’s for the chance to meet Derek Kitow, tv star. When Derek invites John up on stage with him, John is positive his life will never be the same again.

I found this to be a fun short story written in the first-person perspective. John is an average guy with a massive crush, but unlike most of us average people he not only gets to meet the object of his affections, but actually get to know the man behind the public persona too. While in a couple of places I needed as a reader to suspend disbelief (like would a tv star really watch, know and recognize a small-time YouTuber with only a thousand fans?) overall the fun tone of the story helped me roll with it and just enjoy the plot for what it was. And boy was I glad I kept reading – because there’s a few kinks and twists in the storyline that had me giggling and raising my eyebrows.

This is not your average fan-meets-their-crush sort of tale. At least, it’s not like any other story I have read. There’s a bit of light, tastefully written kink that I loved (but which admittedly completely took both me and John’s character by surprise) and a strong Happy For Now ending that left me feeling satisfied.

Except for occurring in December there isn’t really much of a Christmassy feel about the story, but to be honest I didn’t mind that at all. Derek and John’s characters – as well as John’s two friends as secondary characters – filled the story just fine without any crammed-in Christmas-ness. Their antics was plenty to keep me interested and eagerly turning the pages.

A quickly read short story with some laughs and some sizzling sex, this was a great read that I really enjoyed.

Laura is having lunch at the local diner when two FBI agents approach her and insist she come down to headquarters and answer a few questions. A bewildered Laura finds Chase Donovan, her boss’s son, coming to her aid.

“Laura works for my father,” Chase said. “If I don’t see some identification, she’s not going anywhere with you.” To prove his point, his hand moved downward and his fingers wrapped gently around her forearm.

Chase also worked for his father, although what his role was within the business was generally debatable among the clientele. This was so embarrassing. In the three years Laura had worked as Dick Donovan’s bookkeeper, her conversations with his son had been work-related or cordial exchanges about the weather. If there was any chance of the floor opening up and swallowing her, she considered now the perfect time.

She turned to Chase. “Thank you for your concern. I’ve seen their identification.” She didn’t mention the hasty badge flip. “They have me confused with someone else. I’ll take care of the error, and get back to the office as soon as I can.”

“Let me go with you.” Chase tossed the men a wary glance. He still held her arm. “You should have an attorney.”

Laura winced, truly mortified. There was no need for an attorney or involving Chase Donovan in calling one. She had done nothing illegal. “I’m fine.”

“Angeli,” he growled against her damp hair smelling of vanilla and alluring female. “I’m honored at your trust.”

“Just shut up and kiss me before I start thinking too hard.”

Puffy moist lips crashed into his own. He moaned with enthusiasm at her aggressiveness, opened his mouth, and sucked her tongue inside. They dueled for supremacy, causing his dick to push even harder against unforgiving jeans. Her need was raw, thrilling, and matching his own. She clung to him, fingers digging into his shoulders and egging him on with her groans of elated approval.

Around and around he turned, lost to the sensations of finally experiencing a full, uninterrupted kiss from his female. He was hopelessly lost to her presence—bumping into tables, knocking over a chair, and grunting as he slammed into yet another wall. He broke for air, hauled in a lungful of her delicious scent, and fought to do something his mind was totally against happening. He set her down.

Altair tore at his shirt, uncaring of the ripping fabric. He wanted it off. She’s too far away, his befuddled mind screamed. He cried out at the exquisite sensation of her fumbling with his belt, knuckles bumping against his belly. She clawed at his zipper, finally released it, and shoved the jeans to his thighs.

“Oh my God,” she mumbled.

Saturday Seven 4: New Authors I’ve Discovered Thanks to Long and Short Reviews

One of the best things about owning Long and Short Reviews is the many many new authors we get to “meet.” I’ve found some of my favorite authors in our pages – here are just a few (actually, seven.. lol.. see what I did there?), in no particular order. Click on their names to see a post from them or a review of one of their books.

1. Charlotte Hubbard Charlotte writes wonderful Amish, inspy romance books. The characters she draws and the settings are so real– I would love to visit them and just spend some time enjoying the simple things of life.

2. Karen Harper was an early author featured on our site and I fell in love with her writing – both her romantic suspense and her historicals. She is definitely on my auto-read list!

3. Maggie Toussaint is another early author that I now follow closely (and I’ve even had the opportunity to meet her in person… not only is she a good writer, she’s just a genuinely nice person!)

4. Somehow I had missed hearing about Meg Cabot until we reviewed this book. She’s now another one of my auto-reads, especially when I’m in the mood for something with a bit of humor.

5. Pauline Baird Jone also first came to my attention on Long and Short Reviews. One of my all time favorite people.

6. I first “met” Jo Webnar in these pages and not only did I enjoy her books, I enjoyed becoming familiar with their way of life. They’ve given up boat living now, but I know it was fun while it lasted.

7. Last, but certainly not least, is Sarita Leone. She’s another author I keep up with (and am anxiously waiting the sequel to her latest book.. hint, hint).

What about you? Have you “met” any new authors here? Let us know!

Now it’s up to Mimi to clear her name and get to the bottom of things before the killer turns up the heat again in A Deadly Éclair, the scrumptious series debut by Agatha Award-winning author Daryl Wood Gerber.

When personal and financial troubles force Mimi Rousseau to return home instead of following her dreams, she gets the break of a lifetime – the opportunity to open her own French bistro. Everything is moving forward and her future’s looking bright until a murder disrupts quiet Nouvelle Vie. Who would have thought that a killer lurked in Napa Valley?

Cozy mysteries are a favorite of mine. You always get quirky, lovable characters, a few over-the-top oddballs, and a murder. A Deadly Éclair does not disappoint in any case. Mimi is charming and likable and I loved that she bounced ideas off her goldfish. Her mother is nutty and her best friend is the kind of friend every girl wishes she had. Another enticing aspect to this book for me was that it’s set in and around a French bistro and the adjoining inn. As an avid cook, reading about Mimi’s special of the day and the recipes the author included only gave me more motivation to read this charming novel.

Although I know someone always has to die in a cozy mystery, I was upset with the victim in this first book of the series. Even though you don’t get to know him very well before he’s murdered, I felt devastated by the news. That’s probably Mimi projecting onto me, but I was still surprised that someone I thought would be a major player turned out to be the victim.

A Deadly Éclair has everything a good cozy mystery needs: charming and off the wall characters, a unique setting, and a mystery in need of solving! Plus, assorted hijinks and a hint of a romance along the way to spice things up a bit. Although this is my first novel by the author, it definitely won’t be my last. I’m anxiously awaiting the next in this series. Can’t wait to see what Mimi and her crew get themselves into next.
