Henry’s homeless and only wants a warm place to sleep on the coldest night of the year. A forgotten open window in a darkened house entices Henry inside with the promise of warmth and comfort. He knows it’s bad, but he promises himself he’ll be out before the owner wakes on Christmas morning. Except he oversleeps and the homeowner, Jim, discovers a bearded stranger sawing logs under his dining room table. When the shock and the drama that ensues dies down, Henry and Jim discover that they might have found, quite unexpectedly, the Christmas miracle they’d both been longing for—love and home.

Henry needed to get out of the freezing cold, snowy night that Christmas Eve. Finding an open window into what he thought was an empty home, he climbed through – not wanting to die from exposure. Jim got an awful scare when Henry climbed in, and from that moment on both their lives changed forever.

Henry and Jim meet under what might be the most unusual circumstances that I’ve ever read before. I have to admit I kept fluctuating between disbelief – why didn’t Jim run screaming from the stranger that broke into his house? – and warmth from the compassion Jim showed Henry. Eventually I decided to stop thinking about the plot and circumstances and just roll with the story and enjoy it. I genuinely think it’s one of those situation that while completely realistic (homelessness and the seriousness of the elements connected to this) it also is virtually impossible to make it both real and romantic. So I ended up acknowledging that it was a different and interesting plot device – Henry and Jim meeting this way and Henry’s problems – but not questioning it too closely.

Taking the story in this different light made it a lot easier for me to enjoy. Henry and Jim both take time to warm up to each other, and reading about their fumbling as they learn about one another was really quite sweet. Readers looking for a very short, somewhat old fashioned Christmas story, one with heart-warming feelings and sharing of gifts and a real “Christmas spirit” type of feel will probably really enjoy this. There is no sex in this story, which I personally didn’t mind, though readers looking for a spicy romance might not be as happy with. I really liked Henry and Jim and was pleased with their happy ending. While I would have loved a little more detail on how they went from that initial meeting to their fully-fledged relationship, the very short word count definitely limited the author in what he was able to achieve so I feel this needed to be taken into consideration.

A heart-warming, old-style Christmas story about embracing what you have, making the best of your situation and always being open to receiving gifts, this is a good short story that I liked.

The world of oil is more than just money and politics.

Femi and his wife, Jessica, are new college graduates on their honeymoon when Femi is presented with two amazing job offers in his field of chemistry. Both positions offer him the world, but both positions come with strings attached. The downside is that both positions will try his own ethics and perception of his world.

Black Gold is an interesting take from the inside of the oil industry. The author, Augustine Sam, brings deep research and insight into the world of Black Gold. He also overlays the social and societal perceptions of the relationship between Femi and Jessica as well as the cultural background which has deep undertones within the oil negotiations.

While the story has a believable plot, backstory, and great research; I feel that there could have been much more description and stronger dialogue throughout the story. Several parts of the story felt rushed, as through the author was interested in the direction of the story, but felt that the current section of the story was not as important to the overall development. One such event is Femi’s homecoming which almost feels out of place and not central to the overall storyline.

Overall the editing was clean and the central plot was strong. While description could have been more in depth and the dialogue more interactive, the suspense and twists throughout the entire book are riveting. The politics involved and the set-ups between two powers in the oil world make the central plot more explosive and entertaining. The story was fun and an interesting take into the world which few are truly privy to.

If you are looking for an interesting read that will give you a different perspective on the oil industry; make sure you don’t miss Black Gold!

He’s always had a way with the ladies
She won’t give him the time of day
Sparks fly when two hearts in motion collide.

Florist Joey Reeves is working overtime to stay away from Lou Cortez, the ace mechanic with a reputation for irresistible charm. She’s a single mom with enough on her plate—the last thing she needs is entanglement with the hottest guy in town…

“Well, hello there.”

Joey glanced up and froze. The man who’d been haunting her sleep looked even better in the hard light of day.

“H-hello.” She coughed. The guys who worked at Webster’s Garage all looked larger than life, covered in tattoos, muscles, and that indefinable sense of danger they wore like a second skin. But this guy, the tall, Latin lover with dark-brown eyes and lips made for kissing, had ensnared her.

Enjoy an Excerpt:

Lou wasn’t a one-nighter kind of guy. He liked to wine and dine women, to linger over the seduction and part ways as friends. He always left them wanting more while happy to distance himself.

But with Joey, it was different. He couldn’t understand why, and he’d thought about it a lot. Perhaps her initial rejection had put the spark of challenge in his belly. Or maybe her shyness had intrigued him to see if she’d be that compliant in bed; he had every hope of eventually finding out the answer to that question. Then he’d remember her warm brown eyes, her smile, and he’d get a pang in his chest that had nothing to do with sex and everything to do with feeling.

Christ. If he was already feeling this for a woman he hadn’t yet fucked, he was pretty much screwed. And not in a good way. He had no intention of ever getting married, and Joey seemed like the hearts and—no pun intended—flowers type. Having a steady girlfriend didn’t bother him, but he didn’t feel ready for that either. So why all the lovey bullshit?

Had to come from watching all his friends couple up. They’d turned him soft…so to speak.

He glanced down at himself, aware this constant hard-on when thinking of Joey had to stop.

Heller walked out of his office and glanced around. “I don’t like it this quiet.” To Lou he said, “We go to Ray’s soon, I buy you a beer. You need it. Now quit mooning over whatever woman crawled up your ass and get to work.” Lou caught a few unflattering comments in German he’d heard before just as Heller disappeared back into his office and shut the door. The phone rang, and Lou returned to work. Seconds later, Heller erupted in some harsh German. And man, the big dude had a booming voice that carried, even through a closed door.

The guys who’d been hand sanding a Camry stopped and stared at the office. Mateo and Smith shared a glance then shook their heads.

“I’m not asking him now.”

“Me neither.”

As one, they turned to Kelly.Kelly, Heller’s newest hire and a damn fine paint guy, sighed. “Why is it always me? You know predators always go for the weakest prey—and I’m like a hundred pounds less than the boss. At least make Lou ask to give the rest of us a fighting chance.”

Lou chuckled. “Yeah, right. No way in hell am I going in there after hearing that.” He paused. They heard more shouting, then something slammed into the wall with a crack. Dead silence. “You think he’s talking to his old man?” Lou had met the bastard once and had no urge to repeat the experience.

Kelly swallowed. “Um, that’d be my guess. I’ve only been here four months, but no one else gets him that pissy that fast. You know he’s slow to boil.”

“But when he does he’s friggin’ insane,” Mateo added. “No way in hell I’m asking.”

“For fuck’s sake.” Lou sighed. “What do you guys want?”

They all looked at each other before Kelly, the group’s sacrificial lamb, said, “We want a vending machine. For drinks. It gets dry in here, you know?”

Lou blinked. “A soda machine?”

“Hey, the customers could use it too.”

“What customers?” Lou snorted. “People come in here to drop off their cars. They don’t wait around for you guys to sand and paint. That takes days. Weeks.”

“No shit.” Mateo scowled. “We’re not stupid, Lou. I’ve been asking for one for two years. We’re just saying we want stuff to drink. And a coffee pot would be nice. We’re not lucky enough to walk a few doors down for coffee and donuts like you Webster pussies.”

Lou chuckled, remembering the bear claw. “NCB does serve donuts sometimes. The homemade, old-fashioned kind. But the other day, man, I had the best coffee. And I remember Foley eating some sweet cheese tarts. An apple fritter too, come to think of it.”

Smith groaned. “You’re a mean bastard.”

The door banging against the wall interrupted the conversation, and they froze.

“Why is no one working?” Heller growled.

Man, the guy was almost worse than Del on a tear. Lou decided to take one for the team and stood. “The guys want a soda machine.”

Heller scowled. “What? Why?”

“They’ve earned it, dealing with your moods.” Probably not the smartest thing he could have said. He swore he could see ice forming in Heller’s eyes—ice that burned. “Think about it. It’s something your old man would never go for. He’d throw a fit before getting his people anything to boost morale.”

Heller opened then closed his mouth, his stare downright frightening as he gazed at Lou before shifting to look at the others. “Ja. Okay. I’ll get one.”

“And a coffee pot or machine. Come on, man. Have a heart. Even I like the idea of a coffee machine. And it would be nice for clients too. Besides, the guys are weak. You know they’re more effective when they’re less whiny and slowly dying off a caffeine high.”

“Well, that’s not so nice,” Mateo muttered.

“Okay. Fine. But you.” Heller pointed at Kelly, who flinched. “You’ll figure out the cheapest and best product. Then we’ll see. Come use my computer.”

“Sure, sure. Bury the new guy where no one will find the body, why don’t you,” Kelly said under his breath as he passed Lou and slunk by Heller into the office.

Laughing at the kid’s melodrama, Lou finished doing his estimates before suiting up. Time to disassemble the Corvette so they could start sanding. He glanced at the clock. He’d give it two and a half more hours then bail. And if Heller didn’t like it, too bad. Not that Lou would put it to the guy exactly that way.

Three hours later, Lou swore. He’d gotten so wrapped up in his work that he’d lost track of time. That’s all he needed, to be late again with Joey. He had a feeling if he blew it tonight, he wouldn’t get another chance.

Notorious Women by Jennifer Laam – Guest Blog

Long and Short Reviews is pleased to welcome Jennifer Laam whose newest book, The Lost Season of Love and Snow, released today.

NOTORIOUS WOMEN

Before I considered writing a book about Natalya Goncharova, the heroine of The Lost Season of Love and Snow, I knew her only as the notorious wife of the great poet Alexander Pushkin. She was no more than a footnote in Russian history: unquestionably beautiful and said to be dangerously flirtatious. Her husband died tragically at the age of 37, after a duel he fought to defend her honor. I hadn’t realized how severely Natalya’s historical reputation suffered as a result.

“Pushkin’s whore.”

A character in Martin Cruz Smith’s Tatiana uses this phrase to describe Natalya. After reading, I had to learn more about her. Once I did, I felt compelled to tell her story and her version of the events that led to that infamous duel.

Natalya was only sixteen when she met Alexander, and not much older than that when they married and started a family. I believe she was near-sighted, as Alexander described her as his “Madonna with a squint.” She seemed to enjoy beautiful gowns, costume balls, and the glamorous social life of the imperial court.

In some academic circles, Natalya has been characterized as empty-headed. I never believed it. Alexander Pushkin, a genius with a huge ego, would never marry a woman who didn’t appreciate his work. Unsurprisingly, newer research demonstrates that Natalya had an active inner life and took an interest in Russian poetry.

Though deeply in love, Natalya and Alexander were attractive and charming. Both of them captured the hearts of other people, always a strain on a marriage. Natalya even drew the romantic attention of the tsar. When the tsar and other men pursued her, she behaved in a manner appropriate to the time and place, play-acting the role of the adored lady in platonic courtly romances. We might even speculate — as I do in my novel — that Natalya behaved this way to protect her family.

An inadequate intercourse between the couples regularly prompts stress, relationship problems and break generic viagra usa up. Nevertheless, a legend persists. A fickle woman brought down a great man. This is the type of story I personally find tiresome. It relies on a misogynistic view of relationships based on gendered stereotypes and little understanding of complex personalities. I hope that at least in some small way, The Lost Season of Love and Snow, a fictionalized account of her life, contributes to recent efforts to restore Natalya’s reputation. Only by telling the lives of women of the past with dignity, can we truly expect women in the present to be treated with that same respect.

The unforgettable story of Alexander Pushkin’s beautiful wife, Natalya, a woman much admired at Court, and how she became reviled as the villain of St. Petersburg.

At the beguiling age of sixteen, Natalya Goncharova is stunningly beautiful and intellectually curious. At her first public ball during the Christmas of 1828, she attracts the romantic attention of Russia’s most lauded rebel poet: Alexander Pushkin. Finding herself deeply attracted to Alexander’s intensity and joie de vivre, Natalya is swept up in a courtship and then a marriage full of passion but also destructive jealousies. When vicious court gossip leads Alexander to defend his honor as well as Natalya’s in a duel, he tragically succumbs to his injuries. Natalya finds herself reviled for her perceived role in his death. In her striking new novel, The Lost Season of Love and Snow, Jennifer Laam helps bring Natalya’s side of the story to life with vivid imagination―the compelling tale of her inner struggle to create a fulfilling life despite the dangerous intrigues of a glamorous imperial Court and that of her greatest love.

“I know this news is hard to hear, but I wanted you to hear it from me,” Alextor continued. “I will do everything in my power to find a way back for you to return to your homeworld. However, the most pressing matter at hand is the approaching army. We must focus on the approaching hoard of Zahkrinon and dark elves before we can delve into—”

Kathryn abruptly rose from her chair and left the room. Most of the servants scrambled out of her way and faded back into the background, except for one small form who followed Kathryn from the room. Hal shook his head. The servant probably thought she could help the Hero of the Last Battle in some way. Hal turned his attention back to Lord Alextor, determined to listen to what his commanding officer had to say.

“I know not all of you will agree, but I believe—”

Nidira threw herself at her brother’s side and intercepted the knife meant for Lord Alextor’s heart. All around the table, the bare-footed servants randomly attacked the members of the meeting. Blood splashed across the table, a startling contrast against the white slices of bread. Hal jumped to his feet and looked behind him just as a servant prepared to attack.

Top Ten Tuesday: New-To-Me Authors I Read In 2017

Hosted by The Broke and the Bookish

2017 was a mishmash year for me as far as my reading habits go. As you’re about to see, I’m not the kind of reader who is forever loyal to one particular genre. I read everything from the mystery genre to science fiction to history.

I also wasn’t able to come up with a list of ten authors this week. When I find  someone whose writing style I really like, I dive into their backlist and try to read everything from them I can get my hands on whether they’ve written one other book or twenty of them.

It is so interesting to see how someone’s writing style has evolved over the years if I stumble across them later on in their career. I also enjoy spotting the similar themes that sometimes develop in a writer’s body of work. The best way to notice them is to read everything that author has written.

1. Eowyn Ivey.

I know I’ve mentioned her book, “The Snow Child,” in a previous Top Ten Tuesday post here. The more I read from this author, the more I enjoy her understated way of showing the audience what is happening in a scene.

2. David A. Hill Jr.

“iHunt: Killing Monsters in the Gig Economy” is still the best book I’ve ever reviewed for Long and Short Reviews. I can’t wait to see what he comes up with next.

In recent research, cheap price viagra scientists found a new treatment of men’s erectile dysfunction problems. A man should never hide his treatment cheap tadalafil india from his ancestors. The collective use of these herbs brings faster sildenafil price in india results. Men want to get and maintain a hard on for intercourse india viagra generic for at least 4 months. 3. Coretta Scott King.

Everyone knows her as the widow of Martin Luther King, Jr., but until this year I had no idea she was an author or that she’d written a memoir about her life. It was incredibly interesting to see how she remembered their marriage and the early years of the civil rights movement.

4. Graeme Simsion.

Mr. Simsion has written two books so far about a character who has Asperger Syndrome. In “The Rosie Project,” this character tried very hard to find a wife. In the sequel, he had to figure out how to fix his relationship after a series of misunderstandings made his partner wonder if she wanted to spend the rest of her life with him.

5. Eli Celata.

This author is working on a series of urban fantasy books about a guy who doesn’t realize he has magical powers until he goes to college. Based on how interesting “High Summons” and “Grimm Remains” were, I’ll be keeping an eye out for more tales from him in 2018.

6. Drew Hayes.

As soon as I read the title of “The Utterly Uninteresting and Unadventurous Tales of Fred, the Vampire Accountant,” I couldn’t wait to see if the storyline was going to be as wacky and memorable as I thought it would be. Spoiler alert: it was!

A nun and a detective. Quite a combination.

This is almost what I’d call Crime Fiction since it involves a Detective using a nun to help him and the police with a case. A wife new to the convent having lost her husband in the line of duty teams up with her husband’s former partner. Makes for an interesting read.

My first thought about this book was that it seemed long. It is 352 pages and it did take me a little longer to read than other books. Could I say that there were a few “scenes” in this novel that could have been cut? Maybe so. On the other hand, I cannot say I was ever bored. In fact I was surprised that I was always eager to get back to it. There are not a lot of characters which makes it seem to me that the three that were in the spotlight could have been a little more developed. But they were each enjoyable and there was a lot of good dialog. It usually seems implausible that the police would work with a nun and a young lady working in a hotel but somehow this came across okay. I think this worked because it was well-written.

Since the characters were so likable, it seems that if they were fleshed out a little more, this would make a good series. Let’s hope we see book two.
