It was Brant.

Always Brant.

Maybe that was because they’d never had any real closure. Just fighting, yelling, and then silence.

God, she’d hated the silence so much more than the yelling.

The silence crackled with tension—it was always filled with more meaning than when words were actually spoken.

It wasn’t the yelling that had killed their relationship.

It was the silence that had followed. When he had every opportunity to fix it—and didn’t.

Why was it so hard to move on? Probably because she hadn’t tried.

Instead, she’d worked. Tried to stay positive. And hoped.

Damn hope. Stupid hope.

“He’s not coming back for me,” she whispered, knowing that if she finally admitted he wasn’t coming, she would have to take her part of the blame in why. Because it wasn’t just on him to come running back. A small part of her knew that it was her job to meet him halfway. Instead, she’d ignored the need in his eyes, the desperate plea in his voice, and allowed grief to swallow her whole. Because at the time she’d needed someone to blame, and it was easier blaming him than herself.

Boy meets girl, boy gets girl…life happens.

I’m all for a sappy story. I’m all for a book that pulls me out of my life and gets me into someone else’s for a few hours. Marc Levy’s PS From Paris, was certainly a ride.

Mia is a famous actress with problems in her marriage. She’s in Paris and trying to forget her husband’s cheated on her. She meets Paul. He’s got a snoot-load of problems, too. He’s a struggling writer. They’re not really good for each other, but they are.

I’m not going to lie. I went into this book with high hopes. She’s an actress and he’s essentially no one. Could they make it? How will they? It’s intriguing. I had to keep reading to know what would happen.

But there were multiple bumps along the road. I put this book down many times. I kept wanting to shout at Mia. I get she’s lonely and her marriage is a mess, but why would her cheating be okay/therapeutic, but his isn’t? And some of the ways she got around being noticed, even though she’s famous…I really had to suspend my disbelief and it didn’t work a few times. I struggled with what felt like cliched situations, too. I won’t get into details, but I would’ve liked more characterization, too.

That said, this book was still enjoyable. Mia deserved a happy ending and Paul deserved one, too. I didn’t see the ending coming, that’s for sure. Check this book out. It might be the beach read you’ll love.

One year together. Alone, destined to be mates. The clock is ticking as these two virgins become lovers, but can they be more? Is there more than a physical connection between them? Or is that all they can ever have?

Kelly hated the mating call, hated the fact two unwilling and unknowing pack members would be sent off for a year without any consent and forced to become a mated pair. When Kelly found herself waking up in exactly that predicament, she can’t believe she’s been forced to mate with Drake – the one man whom she hates above all others. Can they both wait out the year without killing each other?

This is an interesting and complicated book. The plot is fairly simple – Drake and Kelly have known each other their whole lives and resisted one another because all the grown-ups say they’re “destined”. What I really enjoyed though was unraveling the far more complicated aspects of Kelly and Drake’s feelings to each other. While they both privately feel the pull of the other they’re both – for their own reasons – determined not to just fall into line. The problem is, they’ve both resisted the other so strenuously and for so long that they’ve both mostly convinced themselves they really don’t like each other and have squashed their feelings of attraction. It isn’t a quick – or easy – thing to undo year upon year’s worth of snide comments and acting mean.

This aspect of the plot really intrigued me as it’s not one I’ve come across before and I didn’t think it would be a straight-forward matter for the author to make Kelly and Drake’s about-face seem realistic and understandable. While I’m not sure that I ever truly got on board with the whole “kidnapping and isolating two unknowing people and forcing them to be bound together for a year” thing, I did come around to Kelly and Drake being a couple and falling in love with each other. I was supremely glad they didn’t simply have a huge argument then fall right into bed together – that would have been incredibly disappointing and unrealistic. They took their time, hashed out a lot of their issues and past pain and slowly came together. This helped really sell me on the about-face they both made on each other. With all the time in the world and nothing else to distract them I could appreciate and really see how their opinions changed.

Apart from a few small bumps in the plot – I really couldn’t get over how barbaric the kidnap-and-isolate thing was, nor how two grown adults with working cell phones would just roll over and accept it! – the story itself was a well paced and fairly fresh story. I liked both Kelly and Drake’s characters and felt their relationship developed at an understandable pace. The sex between them was hot and descriptive and the epilogue rounded out the story well and gave it a definite “Happy Ever After” ending.

I found this to be a good, interesting read.

The Lord Meets His Lady by Gina Conkle

Long and Short Reviews welcomes Gina Conkle who is celebrating the upcoming release of The Lord Meets His Lady, the third book in her Midnight Meetings series.

How to Create Page Turning Dialogue by Gina Conkle
Dialogue is a much-debated topic in romance. One day you’re at a conference and a bestselling author spouts rules of dialogue. The next day, you’re reading another bestselling author’s book, and she’s broken every one of those rules.
How do you navigate writing with mixed signals?

It’s maddening…like driving in Italy. My one trip to Florence highlights this point. Our car had the green light. We started to go when another car zoomed through a red light. My husband’s Italian colleague slammed the brakes and shrugged it off with, “Red lights. They’re suggestions.”

The same phrase was said in the movie Under the Tuscan Sun. Maybe it’s an Italian thing, but the spirit of those words stayed with me. In writing, it’s good to learn the rules. Then you can break them. After all, your job is to woo your reader, draw them into the world you created.

This is why one rule guides me: Don’t get in the way of your story.

But every traveler needs a roadmap. Here are five suggestions:

1. To Tag or Not to Tag

You may have heard the only dialogue tags you need are said and ask. It’s true. You can get by with said and ask. But where’s the fun in that? I use whisper, coax, call, cry, murmur, or nothing at all. You know when dialogue sounds clunky. It can happen as easily with said and ask as yell or whimper.

The point is, tell your story. If an offbeat dialogue tag does the trick, be judicious, but go with it. It’s your voice. Don’t be afraid to drive outside the lines.

2. Nonverbal cues speak louder than words

Less than 10% of our communication comes from what we say. The next tier (more than 30%) comes from vocal elements such as tone, pitch, and rate of speech. The final tier (more than 50%) is pure body language with hands and eyes top contenders.
Here’s a challenge. Grab some paper and create columns for nonverbal cues: tone, pitch, rate of speech, breathing, eyes, eyebrows, mouth, nose, hands, fingers, chin, etc. Then, go through a current manuscript and put a hash in each nonverbal cue column. Did you discover certain writer habits? I once had a reviewer nab me for too much “head snapping” and you know what? She was right!

Mix up your nonverbal cues—like the boob shoulder. Marilyn Monroe made this pose famous: a woman’s coy glance past her shoulder (bare is better). Men view it as sexual. Women generally view it as favorable and friendly.

Actions speak louder than words in life and on the page. From page one to “The End” vary the body language.

3. Be aware of gender differences in speech patterns and behavior

Men tend to be less profuse with their facial expressions. They will tease or use more vocal cues such as sarcasm in dealing with sensitive topics, while women are more stream of conscious talkers. Men give less eye contact during conversation and frown or squint more. It means they’re mulling over what’s being said. They prefer being shoulder to shoulder in conversation while women prefer being face to face. Women tolerate interruptions more than men.

Don’t be afraid to turn gender norms upside down. While the above is scientifically proven, consider the outliers. There are blunt women and effusively verbal men. Consistency is the key to character authenticity.

4. It’s in the voice

Do all your characters speak like east coast college grads? If they are east coast college grads, fine. Now dig deeper. Look at their verb choices. Do they have pet phrases? A manner of speaking which reveals personality?

If number three above was the how of character speech, number four is the what. In one of my books, the hero was a well-educated man while the heroine was self-educated. She is fighting tooth and nail for every bit of progress. I made sure her voice reflected that on the page.

Men use commands more often than woman, and in a problematic situation, women ask more questions (to the chagrin of the males in the room). And that brings us to the next interesting point.

5. Dyads are it

Do you feel overwhelmed when writing a scene with three or more people? It’s a lot to juggle. Intimacy can get lost in the shuffle of setting and action. And what do you do when you’re writing, say a band of brothers series? Secondary characters need to shine for your readers to fall in love with them but not take over the book.

Dyads foster intimacy. In interpersonal communication theory, this means communication really is between two people and two people only. Person A speaks with person B and vice versa. They are both aware Person C is with them, but communication is always between two people. Person A can shift to Person C (thus creating a new dyad and Person B is out of the connection). This is why small group scenes can overwhelm. Ever had feedback like “There was too much going on” or “It was too much of XYZ characters”?

How does this translate to say a boardroom or ballroom scene?

Be aware of the dyads you create. More than ever, each word matters in an ensemble scene. You’ve heard the wisdom, if you show the reader a bat in chapter one, it better come back at later in the story (i.e. foreshadowing). Likewise, with your secondary characters and their dialogue, make it count.

Ask yourself, if their words reveal character? Move the story forward? Or feed the conflict?

If you find you’re writing group scenes, and the heroine and heroine’s arc is drifting, shift gears. Bring them together. Focus on a private moment in a crowd before returning to the ensemble cast. Your reader will feel the connection.

And that’s what dialogue in romance is all about.

Thanks for hosting me here. ~ Gina

Behind him the Beckworth geese waddled through the yard, their orange beaks poking the ground. The rogue followed her?

Her mind spinning, she blurted, “What are you doing?”

Hazel eyes glinted beneath his black tricorn hat. “I’m standing on your doorstep. Will you let me in?”

“No.” She stuffed the crumpled letter in her pocket. “Mr. Beckworth and his brothers aren’t here. They have business in Learmouth Village.”

Creases deepened at the corners of his friendly eyes. Lord Bowles wasn’t put off. There had to be a social nicety for this, but where she came from, if you didn’t want someone at your door, you told them.

“I know they aren’t.” His voice dropped lower. “I came early to see you.”

What was she supposed to do about this? A polite refusal formed, but his lordship’s vision snagged on her cleavage before popping back up to her face.

A scoundrel always showed his true colors.

She crossed her arms and leaned against the doorjamb, all pretense of a proper servant gone. “And who’d be calling? The honorable vicar?”

Lord Bowles chuckled. “I apologize for the surprise. Mr. Beckworth and I are longtime friends. I started to tell you about the connection when we repaired the coach brace.” He paused and took a measured tone. “But our road side conversation went in a new direction before I had the chance.”

She smarted when he said a new direction, a stinging reminder she’d pleaded with him to hide her true identity…from his friend no less. What a neat bit of trouble this was. Did his lordship think she was here to steal the family silver? A laughable thing since the humble Beckworth cottage had none.

“Then you would be the old army friend coming to dinner,” she said flatly.

“I am. Worse for the wear but not…so old.”

She shoved off the doorjamb, her mind assembling all the pieces. His lordship’s gentle humor was a balm in this clumsy moment. Lord Bowles was tonight’s honored guest and the reason for the small feast she was preparing in the kitchen. She wanted to tell him to come back later, but Mr. Beckworth might take offense if she did. What would a proper housekeeper do? There was also the matter of her character, such as it was. She didn’t want Lord Bowles thinking ill of her.

Mildly chastened, she clasped dough-flecked hands together. “I am not a thief, milord. If that’s your concern, please know I’d never cause harm to Mr. Beckworth or his family.”

“I believe you.”

Never had three words sounded so lovely. They’d rolled off his tongue without a second’s hesitation. She hesitated. Shutting the door on Lord Bowles wouldn’t be wise. Letting him in didn’t work either.

“I knew there was a possibility our paths might cross,” she said, stalling in hopes wisdom would strike.

“And you thought I’d pretend we’d met for the first time should we be introduced in the village.”

“Yes.”

Lord Bowles nodded, hands clasped behind his back. “While I don’t believe you’re out to harm Mr. Beckworth, this still makes me complicit in your deception…against my friend.”

Her status hung in the balance. Did he have concerns about her circumstances? Or was he in search of a dalliance? Power was his.

“Does that mean you’ll not mention my real name or The Golden Goose to Mr. Beckworth?”

“I already gave my word.” He flashed a disarming smile. “Now will you let me in?”

She was doomed. Lord Bowles was trouble on two legs. He knew how to open doors with his smile alone. A sculpted lower lip balanced his thinner upper lip, a scale of sensuality and wit. Her solitude and better judgement were about to be breached by a consummate flirt wielding his version of honor. Men were by no means a novelty. She was skilled at brushing them off or being unnoticed when the mood struck, but she’d have to face facts.

London allowed obscurity. Cornhill-on-Tweed would not.

“No harm in showing you to the parlor. Mr. Beckworth and his brothers should return within an hour.”

He stepped inside and passed his hat to her, sunshine crowning his chestnut-colored hair. “Any chance you’ll sit with me awhile?” He stretched free of his black redingote, the collar brushing curls at his nape.

“None. I clean the parlor, milord I don’t sit in it.”

He laughed at her bald rejection, and a single lock slipped free of his queue’s black ribbon. The curl hid behind his ear, the strands a sun-kissed contrast to the rest of his brown hair. The vulnerable lock of hair begged to be neatened. She hung his hat and coat on pegs, glad for her hands to have something to do. Lord Bowles stood less than an arm’s length from her at the cross roads of proper and intimate, a winsome smile on his face.

And her wish to be a respectable domestic slipped a notch.

But just when she’s starting to feel at ease in her new identity, a body turns up in the lake—and threatening letters start arriving from an all-too-familiar address. One thing is certain: she’s learned how to fight evil. And she’ll never stop.

You can’t outrun your past no matter how hard you try. And believe me, Gwen Proctor has done everything humanly possible to put her old life – and her old self – behind her. Trying to forget she’d ever been married to a serial killer, she and her kids have been on the run for three years. Finally, they’ve found a place they can call home, but for how long?

Gwen Proctor, who was once Gina Royal, is a complex character. She’s tough as nails, dedicated and determined, all the things she needs to be in order to keep herself and her children safe. She’s also over the top obsessive about security, protocol, and how things work around the house. This, too, I suppose is necessary for their safety, although it does get a bit repetitive and annoying at times. While I understand her unwillingness to trust people, she takes it a little too far at times. Gwen pushes anyone and anything she can’t put into a neat little box to the side. Even when she realizes she’s made a mistake, she just pushes forward, never looking back. I’m sure that most people will take her situation into consideration and forgive her for being a little crazy at times, but saying, “Yikes, I’m sorry that I thought you were in league with my psycho ex-husband” would have gone a long way towards making me like her more. Not that I hated her, because I didn’t. She was a woman doing what she had to in order to survive. I understand where she’s coming from, having two children of my own. But her never apologizing even once gives her this abrasiveness that rubbed me the wrong way.

As much as I love thrillers and mysteries, I’ve never been one of those people who was able to solve it before the end. This holds true for this novel as well. There are a couple of people close to Gwen throughout the story that I kept wavering back and forth with. Is it this one? Oh no, please don’t let it be that one. In the end, I was still taken by surprise when the perpetrator was revealed, although I’m pretty sure I should have seen that one coming.

Stillhouse Lake is one of the most intense, edge of my seat books I’ve read all year. It kept me engaged and wanting more with every page. As much as I wish the internet trolls she deals with every day during her Sicko Patrol were exaggerated, I know for a fact that they’re not. There are crazies out there that will take revenge on innocents to get the justice they believe they’re owed. That’s probably the scariest part of the entire novel. Even with the cliffhanger at the end, you get an excellent thrill ride of a novel. So much so that I preordered the next book, Killman Creek, before I was even halfway through this one. That’s how much this book grabbed me.

It’s an easy choice considering she’s only twenty-six. And the Elders may already be on her trail thanks to the fight with the nut job in the parking lot kick-starting her dormant DNA.

Enter an insane grandfather, a shifter with a hidden agenda, and a witch with a shoe addiction, and suddenly loner Alex is wishing for a quiet house in the hills with the dragon she’s falling for.

But a fight is coming and Alex knows the only way to find her answers is to trust her powers and become the warrior she was destined to be.

Despite being set in the present, this story also refers to the history of the guardians. Alex comes into her powers which include fire. Collum, her dragon guardian, must keep her safe until she is a full elemental, able to control her magical urges and make them obey her wishes.

This is a wonderful story of dragons, magic, and the solving of an ancient mystery which has bearing of Alex’s past, in particular who her parents were. Life for Alex is mixed up and becomes more so when the weird Elders of the Elementals interfere.

I loved the way this travelled all over the world, but would point out that the author should research her venues. The island off the south coast of England is called Isle of Wight (pronounced white, but not spelled that way). This error took me out of the flow of the story and it took a while to get back into it again as I kept looking for other mistakes.

I really enjoyed reading this book as it had a bit of everything fantasy and in the main was well written. Definitely worth 4.5 stars.

High school teacher Grace Thompson didn’t want to be a mentor. And she sure as hell didn’t want to mentor Levi Mondez.

They got off to a rocky start, but it wasn’t entirely her fault. How was she to know he was the lead singer of local rock band, Mondez? How was she to know he considered her short temper a turn on? And how was she to know her best friend, Riley, would fall for him?

If he wasn’t so damn gorgeous it might have made the whole mess easier to handle. If he didn’t transform Grace into a blazing furnace of need, and if he hadn’t confused the hell out of her already bruised heart, life might have turned out a heck of a lot differently. She was screwed.

Lee Piper has done it again. Once I started reading Rock My World, I couldn’t put it down and binge read the whole novel. Once more, I finished with a deep sense of satisfaction and my own heart beating triple its rate. And that’s because, again, I fell in love, but this time with Levi Mondez.

The story is told from Grace’s point of view in the first person and everything she felt and saw, I did with her. It was a rollercoaster ride of emotions. The only thing I didn’t like was the amount of alcohol she drank, which at times seemed excessive and worrisome.

The writing was flawless and Piper masters the art of building the romance and the heat between Levi and Grace. Furthermore, though the characters fall in love fast their connection felt plausible and real.

All in all, this is a must read and I’ll be desperately waiting for the rest of the series to come out!

Interview with Candis Terry – Giveaway

Long and Short Reviews welcomes Candis Terry who is visiting with us today to celebrate the completion of her Sunshine Creek series. Leave a comment for a chance to win the entire series: Perfect For You, A Better Man, and Tangled Up in Tinsel.

In Tangled Up in Tinsel, Candis told me, “I get to the action (wink wink) faster than any other book I’ve written. There was so much chemistry between Parker and Gabriella that doing the deed just wasn’t going to wait until page 200 or so. I worried that might be a problem for the chemistry between them for the rest of the book but I shouldn’t have worried. They agreed to a ‘one night only’ deal and then they tried to stick with that for a loooong time! Notice I say ‘tried.'”

So far Candis has written fifteen published books and has nine books that are unpublished. I asked her if she had a favorite.

“It’s hard to pick a favorite but if you twist my little finger I’ll say it was my very first book SECOND CHANCE AT THE SUGAR SHACK,” she told me. “I absolutely loved bringing Kate and Matt and the rest of those in Deer Lick, Montana to life. Of course, if we’re talking about the character Letty, I didn’t get to bring her to actual life, but she sure talked a lot from the great beyond.”

One of her favorite characters, on the other hand, is Jackson Wilder, the hero from SWEETEST MISTAKE, the second book in her Sweet, Texas series.

“He was so stubborn, so ornery, and yet so honest (not to mention sexy as hell) I fell in love with him hard. Of course, trying to tame him was an enormous challenge. I still get fan letters telling me that he’s their favorite too. And that makes me super happy,” she explained.

I asked her, “What is the most surprising thing you discovered while writing your book(s)?”

“I write series, so it’s always surprising to me that I end up having a real substance moment that seems like it had been planned all along but wasn’t. I love being surprised! In my Sweet, Texas series the real story behind the story kind of snuck up on me in the third book. I had no idea I was leaning in that direction, but it totally worked. I even called my editor and said, ‘You’re not going to believe what happens.’ And yes, she was happily surprised too.”

When Candis needs to do research, she said that she’s a “boots-on-the-ground” researcher, going to the location she’s writing about. She’ll learn the ways of the people, what their lives and homes are like, where they work, hang out, shop, and go on Friday nights. She will interact with them and ask them more questions than they really want to answer.

“But wearing them down is when I glean all the good stuff!” she said.

The weirdest thing she’s ever done in the name of research was when she visited a bat cave where thousands of bats flew right past her, their wings creating a wind so strong that it blew her hair all over her face.

Candis lives in a small town just outside of Boise, Idaho on a small farm. I asked her what she liked best about it.

Finally I asked, “What was the scariest moment of your life?”

“Last year my hubby and I went on a vacation to Alaska. While we were there we zip-lined. I am horribly afraid of heights! During one part, we had to rappel down backwards from the top of a sixty-foot platform. I almost couldn’t do it. I finally did. And yes, I screamed all the way down.”

As if the holidays weren’t stressful enough, Parker Kincade has a restaurant to open. The fact that his Groomzilla brother wants the place for his perfect Christmas wedding doesn’t help. Then there’s the stunning woman who appoints herself his new chef before he’s ready to hire one. But one look at Gabriella Montani has Parker reassessing needs vs. wants. Neither Christmas nor men have ever lived up to her expectations, but Parker has soulmate written all over him.
